Great Content, Horrible App Connectivity

HBO has some of my favorite shows, shows that I’ve watched for years. With Game of Thrones back up and running I downloaded the app and was super excited to stream Game of Thrones and other shows. UNFORTUNATELY, the app crashes constantly. So, I have to keep opening the app and hope that I’ll make it to the show or movie I’d like to watch before it crashes. It’s come a long way since the last time I’ve used it, but it’s disappointing to pay for something that is literally stress enduring.
HBO now shuts down

This app was great at first, when it works that is. More times than not I try to stream/cast it to my TV (because we have DishNetwork and they don’t have HBO) the app shuts off. As soon as I press the cast button the app closes completely and then I have to restart it!!! So frustrating! I’ve called the HBO app customer service and they say they don’t know why it does that, the same for the TV provider.

Outdated app in general. Got the new iPad and was extremely exciting to download hbo and start watching. Everything works fine but the interface feels like 2008. Check out Hulu for inspiration. Content is good though. Still worth a sub but I’m giving 2 stars since the app really needs a refresh.

What is the point of creating great content and then having a buggy app to try to watch it? Maybe you could spend a small portion of your budget on hiring programmers and verification engineers who can help deliver the content without the annoying bugs. I’m using Chromecast with iPhone app. Phone goes to sleep while watching a show. Wake up phone and the app decides to stop the show and start playing a trailer for some other show.

Meaning, when they play that new episode, you have to wait to watch it until it goes into the demand bucket. Or any other live events for that matter. ONLY ON DEMAND. No Channels, nothing remotely live. If that is OK for you then this isnt bad. A little clumsy and slow as far as a UI goes.

App crashes when connecting to Sony TV

It was working last week when I watched the GoT season premiere, but last night it just kept crashing. Not sure if there was a recent update between last Sunday and last night on this app or my Sony’s firmware to cause this crashing issue. HBO Now app on my Sony has serious buffer issues but that’s another issue separate from this iOS app. I had to do a work around by just connecting in my laptop to my tv which basically defeats the purpose of having smart devices connecting with each other.

I had HBO and others on Dishnetwork. Before I got the Hopper 3. I was sold the 2 year contract with the locked in price. That I also was to keep all my channels plus my HBO and others. But then within less than a year. They had this dispute. And I lost my HBO. And now I’m supposed to be locked in this contract. But DishNetwork is in breach. But won’t let me out. 17 years with DishNetwork and they are getting greedy and dirty. So my advice is stay away from Dishnetwork. Because I can’t even get Cinemax either. And that was also part of my agreement. I’ll be looking into a class action lawsuit and. Filling a complaint with the Better Business Bureau. As well as the attorney general on this matter. Because I’ve been around and around with them on this.

First the positive: This app lets you browse and play the HBO catalog, and it does a good job in this. However, comparing this to pretty much every other movie streaming app out there, it has serious shortcomings in other expected capabilities, for example: - Get any information about a listing. For many movies you don’t know what it’s about, you want to read at least a sentence or two to understand it’s premise. Especially documentaries often have an ambiguous title. I have found no way to get to descriptive text, clicking on a movie means playing it. Even if there is information *somewhere*, the app has failed in usability here. Googling he movie is not an acceptable alternative. - Find the shows you are currently watching. Granted, other services like Netflix are also doing a terrible job in guiding you to the movies you have started watching, but HBO just doesn’t have this functionality at all. It would be easy to have a “Continue watching” section prominently at the beginning, but it’s nowhere to be found. There must be some logic in making you scroll all the way to “Westworld” or searching for it to watch the next episode. Yes, the workaround is to put the show in your “list”, but why?

It just works, I don’t know about any of the other issues that people seem to be having, it sounds more like user fault and people not knowing how to use their smartphones than the app it self. You hit “play”, it plays. You hit “add series to my list” it add’s them. You stop watching your show in any platform and you can resume no problem on another one. I use it on celluar(Verizon unlimited) it plays with no problems, I play while on wifi(Verizon Fios) no problems. So, if you are somewhat competent on how to use technology and understand it, you are gonna have “0” problems. 4 stars due to lack of offline playability. Please developers, I just wanna be able to watch my shows while commuting home from work.

There is no section inside the app which displays the list of the shows that I am currently watching. Every time I come back, I have to go to my list and start the show. Same problem in roku version of hbo now (which I actually use way more than ios version). How are you expecting to compete with Netflix when your app itself is so counter intuitive and pedestrian.

If I open up the HBO NOW app on our AppleTV, it turns off closed captioning in the AppleTV settings every time. Leaving the app, turning it back on in Settings and returning to the app preserves the CC setting. I looked at the setting before opening the app, and CC was on; as soon as I launch the app and watch any content, it is off. This bug needs to be fixed.

My HD Netflix and Hulu apps have no trouble playing in HD, but this app is blurry and frequently stops to buffer. I consulted Google and it appears this is a frequent problem. It needs to be fixed because I’m wondering why I’m paying for this if it stops at least fifteen times to buffer during one episode of Game of Thrones.

No portrait support, lost of missing features when compared to Netflix and amazon prime now. Just today I had to uninstall and reinstall the app because it was “out of date” but when I went to update the app there was no update available. Streaming quality is also sub par when compared with amazon or Netflix. The app seems to buffer a lot for no apparent reason. This app needs to be redone from the ground up because in its current state, it’s a dumpster fire.

I liked HBO however their app has a lot of flaws. Parental controls are very awkward. You if you set limitations it takes affect for the account and there is no convenient way for the adults to watch shows at a higher rating without going into settings and changing the limitation for the entire account. Other app will let you just entere the PIN number to unlock a show to watch. Please enable this. The List feature is episode specific for tv shows so if you watch a show you can’t use the list to navigate to the next episode.

I had considered giving this a 3-star review, but when you factor in the wait time, it doesn’t deserve 3. The UI is fairly easy to get used to, because I’ve never much minded searching for the shows I want to watch as long as I can access them rather quickly. The quality is absolutely fantastic on my tv. I don’t have an HDTV but I of course can still stream 1080p. What is a considerable disappointment and the reason I cancelled my service is because of the horrible buffering. I’ve had a lot of streaming service subscriptions, but this one is the worst I’ve ever used in terms of buffering. My internet does just fine with Netflix, Hulu, YouTube, and PlayStation Vue, so there is absolutely no reason why it shouldn’t smoothly stream this app—so it tells me it’s the app itself since I’ve seen tons of other people saying the same exact thing. If you guys can fix the crazy buffering issues, then you will be able to retain the customers you’ve lost.
Parental controls are a pain

The app is pretty easy to browse through and watch but it a huge pain to keep changing parental controls when ever my kids want to watch something and then switch back. It would be a lot easier to allow streaming of restricted content by entering a quick passcode only parents know instead of going to setting and changing everything. This method would also prevent any mistakes in which parents forget to switch restrictions back on after watching. Not well designed for people with kids.

While the user interface has improved a lot and everything looks wonderful it’s completely non functional as you have to leave the app and go to a website if you want to update information, for example billing information can’t be updated in the app which is beyond stupid, don’t you want your money HBO? I’m on the fence about paying for HBO now anyway so if it expires whatever, I’m not jumping through hoops to give my money up.

I would give this app zero stars if I could. I signed up for the free week trial and on the 6th day I spent an hour and a half on the phone to cancel it. It was a huge hassle! I was assured I wouldn’t be charged for it. Looked at my credit card statement last night and I was charged for it. I did an online chat with a rep last night and she said “they don’t do refunds.” After chatting with her for 20 minutes, she told me I would be sent an email from the “higher up’s”. I did not receive said email. Do NOT download this app unless you want to be charged for it.

I lost access to HBO because of the corporate spat with Dish network. So I finally subscribed through HBO Now, but was astounded how incredibly inferior their UI was compared to their Go app, The whole process of adding watchlist items and navigating was so much better there than this clumsy feeling now I am forced to use now. How is it they offer a parallel app to the same content and generate such a terrible user experience in comparison? But the worst thing: according to their user support there is absolutely no way to disable auto play. That is of significant issue with me and I will most certainly drop this app within a couple of months purely because of this. Even the most egregious streaming apps for forcing auto play down their users throats have come around to allowing it to be disabled.

In my tv when I had Dish network, HBO had Game of Thrones and all the programming in spanish. The app it's not like the HBO in the TV. Tech support you need to improve this, the app needs to be the same as the HBO on the tv with other networks. We need other audio languages.

As a Dish customer I’ve been very upset about HBO pulling their channels. I was surprised that Dish recommended HBO NOW. I signed up for it, then realized I can’t watch anything live. And what I have watched is like going back to the old dial up speeds! Stop and go, stop and wait. It took at least 50 minutes to watch a 30 minute show! This app isn’t worth it!

I initially wanted to try this app because it advertises the ability to watch episodes of shows, such as “Game Of Thrones,” the day of its premiere. I downloaded the app with this expectation, and obviously what is available, are the seasons they’ve been previously aired. The app would be much improved (as an insensitive,) if the programming offered, is for early viewing the day of its release, not so much after its been aired on the network.

I have tried logging in with 3 or 4 different methods such as prime or my Tv provider, then the app asks me to create an account. The app has never gotten past this point as it says “Oops! Something went wrong!” Every time you try to create an account. If I try to sign in to an account, the app just says it will restart, every single time. As of today this app is useless.

HBO has very buggy app on Apple TV that it does not remembers if you have turned on captions. Scrolling to next episode is a nightmare like if you are on Episode 2 of season 7 and you want to go to episode 3, then instead of keeping the context to season 7, it goes to season 1, so you need to scroll to season 7. Worst design Their website is buggy that scrolling to skip the intro does not work

I just reinstalled the app for Game if Thrones. We did this last season but kept it longer because we enjoyed the content. Had to cancel for a while and came back. The app on our Firestick is absolute garbage. I have three list options: Featured, My List and Continue Watching. I tried to click on “Browse” and it does nothing. I can search, but even under search is only Recommended Series and Recommended Movies. How am I supposed to know what content is actually provided by HBO if I have no way to browse the library?? If there is a way to browse content on my Firestick, I will change my rating. If not, I’ll be canceling this as soon as GoT is over and won’t come back.

First the positive: This app lets you browse and play the HBO catalog, and it does a good job in this. However, comparing this to pretty much every other movie streaming app out there, it has serious shortcomings in other expected capabilities, for example: - Get any information about a listing. For many movies you don’t know what it’s about, you want to read at least a sentence or two to understand it’s premise. Especially documentaries often have an ambiguous title. I have found no way to get to descriptive text, clicking on a movie means playing it. Even if there is information *somewhere*, the app has failed in usability here. Googling he movie is not an acceptable alternative. - Find the shows you are currently watching. Granted, other services like Netflix are also doing a terrible job in guiding you to the movies you have started watching, but HBO just doesn’t have this functionality at all. It would be easy to have a “Continue watching” section prominently at the beginning, but it’s nowhere to be found. There must be some logic in making you scroll all the way to “Westworld” or searching for it to watch the next episode. Yes, the workaround is to put the show in your “list”, but why?
Inferior in all ways to HBO Go?!?

I lost access to HBO because of the corporate spat with Dish network. So I finally subscribed through HBO Now, but was astounded how incredibly inferior their UI was compared to their Go app, The whole process of adding watchlist items and navigating was so much better there than this clumsy feeling now I am forced to use now. How is it they offer a parallel app to the same content and generate such a terrible user experience in comparison? But the worst thing: according to their user support there is absolutely no way to disable auto play. That is of significant issue with me and I will most certainly drop this app within a couple of months purely because of this. Even the most egregious streaming apps for forcing auto play down their users throats have come around to allowing it to be disabled.
Parental controls are a pain

The app is pretty easy to browse through and watch but it a huge pain to keep changing parental controls when ever my kids want to watch something and then switch back. It would be a lot easier to allow streaming of restricted content by entering a quick passcode only parents know instead of going to setting and changing everything. This method would also prevent any mistakes in which parents forget to switch restrictions back on after watching. Not well designed for people with kids.
HBO and DishNetwork

I had HBO and others on Dishnetwork. Before I got the Hopper 3. I was sold the 2 year contract with the locked in price. That I also was to keep all my channels plus my HBO and others. But then within less than a year. They had this dispute. And I lost my HBO. And now I’m supposed to be locked in this contract. But DishNetwork is in breach. But won’t let me out. 17 years with DishNetwork and they are getting greedy and dirty. So my advice is stay away from Dishnetwork. Because I can’t even get Cinemax either. And that was also part of my agreement. I’ll be looking into a class action lawsuit and. Filling a complaint with the Better Business Bureau. As well as the attorney general on this matter. Because I’ve been around and around with them on this.
Shows are good, app is not

The app is just clunky and old feeling. You can finally save shows to your list but it’s not even the first thing you see when you open the app. I always need closed captioning but it doesn’t keep them on from episode to episode. Each episode, I have to open the app, let it buffer to show the connection with my TV and then turn on closed captioning again. Then because it only rewinds 10 seconds at a time, I have to keep rewinding, waiting for buffering, rewind again to get back to the beginning (when the closed captioning should have just been on). Not very assessable

Website doesn’t event function properly

Can’t even log into my account because their website is freezing up when I log in and says that I have logged in too many times and locks me out for an hour. Have called customer service several times only for them to admit they don’t know what’s wrong with it. Have tried on mobile device and computers and through the phone with technical support. You’d think with the millions of dollars they are robbing from people they could afford a team of web designers that know what they’re doing. Whatever the issue is I just paid $15 for a streaming service I can’t watch.

It's a minor but annoying problem on my iPhone xs. Considering that my home button activator is a slide up from the bottom of the screen, it makes it very difficult to tap the "sign in" button without hitting the iTunes subscription button or sliding up. Could you provide some space to click sign in if you're already a subscriber? It would make a hug difference for people who will experience the same problem. Thanks!
UX is horrific

I primary use HBO NOW on my Apple TV. I think whatever product manager or designer who came up with the new non-linear user experience should be fired. What a horrible update. Why do I feel this way? Rewatching shows is somewhat painful. The fact that I have to scroll through a grid of episodes rather than go through the list in order makes absolutely no sense. Maybe if I was watching episodes of The Office where I wanted to find a specific one randomly, this would work but when I’m watching chronological series like The Sopranos or GoT this makes me extremely frustrated. Stupid stupid stupid. Great shows. Please rollback the Apple TV app.

I liked HBO however their app has a lot of flaws. Parental controls are very awkward. You if you set limitations it takes affect for the account and there is no convenient way for the adults to watch shows at a higher rating without going into settings and changing the limitation for the entire account. Other app will let you just entere the PIN number to unlock a show to watch. Please enable this. The List feature is episode specific for tv shows so if you watch a show you can’t use the list to navigate to the next episode.
Volume slider bug

Im on an iPhone 7 plus and whenever I use the popup shortcut that takes me to the next episode after finishing the one i just watched, i think it carries over the volume sliders UI from the episode i just watched and adds a new one for the new episode i began watching from the shortcut. I had up to 4 different volume sliders at once, but only one worked. Just thought id let you know to improve the quality of your app.
No Refund Policy & Boring

No matter what your circumstances are, HBO has a 100% no refund policy. I tried out HBO when I was rewarded 3 months free through Verizon up. At the exact same time when the 3 months ended, my HBO app went to black anytime I clicked it on my PS4. I assumed my 3 months free had ended but no! They charged me $15 for an entire month I didn’t even watch 1 second of HBO!! They don’t care what your reasons are, they’ll don’t give refunds. I’ll be reporting them to the better business bureau. . . The only interesting thing on HBO is GAME OF THRONES. I’d rather just buy the last season as it comes out instead of wasting my money on HBO’s boring other shows.
I travel quite often

I am a US citizen, using US credit cards, and this app works OK when I’m in the United States, but when traveling it is useless as it will not work. So basically, I will be in Brazil for the Game of Thrones season premiere, and was hoping I could watch the opening episode connecting my phone to the television in the hotel. As I usually do with Netflix, when traveling. The whole point of a mobile app is that. After all, if I were at home where I have a regular HBO subscription, I would be watching it on my large screen TV. Basically if it only works well in the United States it is useless.

It just works, I don’t know about any of the other issues that people seem to be having, it sounds more like user fault and people not knowing how to use their smartphones than the app it self. You hit “play”, it plays. You hit “add series to my list” it add’s them. You stop watching your show in any platform and you can resume no problem on another one. I use it on celluar(Verizon unlimited) it plays with no problems, I play while on wifi(Verizon Fios) no problems. So, if you are somewhat competent on how to use technology and understand it, you are gonna have “0” problems. 4 stars due to lack of offline playability. Please developers, I just wanna be able to watch my shows while commuting home from work.

I would give this app zero stars if I could. I signed up for the free week trial and on the 6th day I spent an hour and a half on the phone to cancel it. It was a huge hassle! I was assured I wouldn’t be charged for it. Looked at my credit card statement last night and I was charged for it. I did an online chat with a rep last night and she said “they don’t do refunds.” After chatting with her for 20 minutes, she told me I would be sent an email from the “higher up’s”. I did not receive said email. Do NOT download this app unless you want to be charged for it.
An endless maze of confusion and frustration

App will not let me login using my tv provider credentials. HBO has told me repeatedly that I can login using my cable subscription info with no issue. (I pay for my HBO through my cable provider). But of course when I login I’m notified that I need to still pay them $15 to watch anything! Uh no. I’m already subscribed and paying for HBO. So I try to log out and sign in again. Nope. HBO App is in an endless loop of lock out until I fork over MORE money per month. This is so frustrating I’m honestly thinking of canceling my subscription altogether.
App crashes when connecting to Sony TV

It was working last week when I watched the GoT season premiere, but last night it just kept crashing. Not sure if there was a recent update between last Sunday and last night on this app or my Sony’s firmware to cause this crashing issue. HBO Now app on my Sony has serious buffer issues but that’s another issue separate from this iOS app. I had to do a work around by just connecting in my laptop to my tv which basically defeats the purpose of having smart devices connecting with each other.

The app is pretty good and has great movies and tv shows but my one complaint is the lack of multiple profiles. Let’s say I’m watching GOT and am on ep.5 than someone else watches it and they are on ep.6 I have to find were I last left off and that is very annoying it would be great if you guys could make multiple profiles a feature.

There is no section inside the app which displays the list of the shows that I am currently watching. Every time I come back, I have to go to my list and start the show. Same problem in roku version of hbo now (which I actually use way more than ios version). How are you expecting to compete with Netflix when your app itself is so counter intuitive and pedestrian.
Won’t even open

So I would love to be able to actually use the app and leave a good review, but every time I go to open it, the app crashes before it even gets anywhere. I get a split second of the black screen that says HBO NOW, and then it crashes back to my home screen. I’m using a new iPad, and I’ve followed all the troubleshooting tips on their website, and nothing, still doesn’t work. Very irritating! Kind of frustrated I paid for the subscription and it can’t watch it now.

I love the movies and tv shows they have. The one thing that is seriously annoying is that when you rewatch something you don’t get an option to play from beginning it starts off at the ending credits if you select the next episode towards the end, it works ok when you leave an episode midway. It’s annoying having to manually start from the beginning.

I understand I live in the middle of nowhere so my WiFi isn’t the greatest so waiting for things to buffer is gonna happen but I have zero problems with my Netflix so I don’t understand why I have such a hard time with anything HBO related (not to mention it’s a dollar cheaper with a thousand more options). I had the same problem with HBO GO and now with HBO NOW. I sear if it takes me three hours to watch GOT I’m gonna lose my cool with you guys. You and Dish network really need to figure things out!!!!

Apple TV App

The content and services have been great. My only complaint has been with recent updates. My Apple TV - HBO Now app does not support matching range & frame rate. It automatically plays content in HDR which is not the original format of HBO’s content. This ruins the quality of the video and I have to manually switch my video settings to SDR. If you guys could fix this it would be great. Thanks!!

While the user interface has improved a lot and everything looks wonderful it’s completely non functional as you have to leave the app and go to a website if you want to update information, for example billing information can’t be updated in the app which is beyond stupid, don’t you want your money HBO? I’m on the fence about paying for HBO now anyway so if it expires whatever, I’m not jumping through hoops to give my money up.
Programming access

I initially wanted to try this app because it advertises the ability to watch episodes of shows, such as “Game Of Thrones,” the day of its premiere. I downloaded the app with this expectation, and obviously what is available, are the seasons they’ve been previously aired. The app would be much improved (as an insensitive,) if the programming offered, is for early viewing the day of its release, not so much after its been aired on the network.

The new user interface is not user friendly. It is anything but seamless, I feel like I have zero control over my remote control when using this app. The way in which the episodes of each series is organized needs to be re-looked at. Left, right, up, down - its all over the place. HBO - you have my favorite shows but my least favorite app. 😑
App does not function well

I consistently get errors like Error 102 or “oops something went wrong” and the app closes itself. My chromecast works perfectly with Netflix and I have had no issues with it. Therefore, my conclusion is that your app is seriously lacking and needs work. The idea is wonderful and I love the convenience of streaming from my phone but I’d love it more if it worked properly and consistently.

Love the shows on it but don’t like the app. It’s buggy where sometimes if I exit the app and close it out when I open it back up have to keep logging back in and also no skip intro button. I can’t imagine that’s a lot to ask for. Besides that the shows are great just fix the app.

What is the point of creating great content and then having a buggy app to try to watch it? Maybe you could spend a small portion of your budget on hiring programmers and verification engineers who can help deliver the content without the annoying bugs. I’m using Chromecast with iPhone app. Phone goes to sleep while watching a show. Wake up phone and the app decides to stop the show and start playing a trailer for some other show.

Buffering

My husband got the app for our phones and fire stick to watch on our TV. We have to constantly wait for the shows to buffer. One time we timed and it took 30 minutes for the show to even start because it was buffering for so long. It happens on our phones and TV. To help with the buffering we close the app, restart the TV and phones to see if that helps....it does not. It is really disappointing.

CC problem

If I open up the HBO NOW app on our AppleTV, it turns off closed captioning in the AppleTV settings every time. Leaving the app, turning it back on in Settings and returning to the app preserves the CC setting. I looked at the setting before opening the app, and CC was on; as soon as I launch the app and watch any content, it is off. This bug needs to be fixed.
You cannot watch GOT when refeased

Meaning, when they play that new episode, you have to wait to watch it until it goes into the demand bucket. Or any other live events for that matter. ONLY ON DEMAND. No Channels, nothing remotely live. If that is OK for you then this isnt bad. A little clumsy and slow as far as a UI goes.

I’ve been trying for 2 days to cancel before I’d be billed and think I finally figured it out. Should not that complicated. Also did not like when navigating around the app that it would always start at the beginning after viewing something, not efficient

I have tried logging in with 3 or 4 different methods such as prime or my Tv provider, then the app asks me to create an account. The app has never gotten past this point as it says “Oops! Something went wrong!” Every time you try to create an account. If I try to sign in to an account, the app just says it will restart, every single time. As of today this app is useless.

For 15 bucks a month, I expect to actually be able to use the interface to watch the content I’m paying for. The old layout was fine, dated perhaps, but it worked. I can’t browse anything on the new one, so my only options are to search or to watch whatever happens to be featured. If it weren’t for GoT premiering soon, I never would have re-subscribed.

Every week Last Week Tonight has the sound messed up, and it takes a week + to fix it. This wouldn’t be a problem if you offered a free service, but you don’t. I don’t pay you 15 bucks a month to watch new shows a week or more after they air. Fix your problems or lose customers.

Have had the app streaming to Vizio Smartcast for about 6 months. Made it through one movie in that time without the app crashing. Great movies and series but worthless if you can’t watch anything without losing your cool when it crashes.

This new interface is absurd. For example: on Apple TV, I’m trying to watch the latest episode of VEEP. I go to Season 7 and swipe down - except you can’t. At all. You can apparently only swipe down when another object is directly under the heading. Thus, I literally can’t watch VEEP. Because of an interface bug. This is ridiculous.

Frequently crashes when trying to start playback or scrub. Fortunately, it’s stable once the playback starts, which is more than some apps can stay, so that’s worth +1 star, I guess? Chromecast support also crashes frequently, but on the chromecast instead of in the app.

HBO has some of my favorite shows, shows that I’ve watched for years. With Game of Thrones back up and running I downloaded the app and was super excited to stream Game of Thrones and other shows. UNFORTUNATELY, the app crashes constantly. So, I have to keep opening the app and hope that I’ll make it to the show or movie I’d like to watch before it crashes. It’s come a long way since the last time I’ve used it, but it’s disappointing to pay for something that is literally stress enduring.

This app was great at first, when it works that is. More times than not I try to stream/cast it to my TV (because we have DishNetwork and they don’t have HBO) the app shuts off. As soon as I press the cast button the app closes completely and then I have to restart it!!! So frustrating! I’ve called the HBO app customer service and they say they don’t know why it does that, the same for the TV provider.

Outdated app in general. Got the new iPad and was extremely exciting to download hbo and start watching. Everything works fine but the interface feels like 2008. Check out Hulu for inspiration. Content is good though. Still worth a sub but I’m giving 2 stars since the app really needs a refresh.

What is the point of creating great content and then having a buggy app to try to watch it? Maybe you could spend a small portion of your budget on hiring programmers and verification engineers who can help deliver the content without the annoying bugs. I’m using Chromecast with iPhone app. Phone goes to sleep while watching a show. Wake up phone and the app decides to stop the show and start playing a trailer for some other show.

Meaning, when they play that new episode, you have to wait to watch it until it goes into the demand bucket. Or any other live events for that matter. ONLY ON DEMAND. No Channels, nothing remotely live. If that is OK for you then this isnt bad. A little clumsy and slow as far as a UI goes.

It was working last week when I watched the GoT season premiere, but last night it just kept crashing. Not sure if there was a recent update between last Sunday and last night on this app or my Sony’s firmware to cause this crashing issue. HBO Now app on my Sony has serious buffer issues but that’s another issue separate from this iOS app. I had to do a work around by just connecting in my laptop to my tv which basically defeats the purpose of having smart devices connecting with each other.

I had HBO and others on Dishnetwork. Before I got the Hopper 3. I was sold the 2 year contract with the locked in price. That I also was to keep all my channels plus my HBO and others. But then within less than a year. They had this dispute. And I lost my HBO. And now I’m supposed to be locked in this contract. But DishNetwork is in breach. But won’t let me out. 17 years with DishNetwork and they are getting greedy and dirty. So my advice is stay away from Dishnetwork. Because I can’t even get Cinemax either. And that was also part of my agreement. I’ll be looking into a class action lawsuit and. Filling a complaint with the Better Business Bureau. As well as the attorney general on this matter. Because I’ve been around and around with them on this.

First the positive: This app lets you browse and play the HBO catalog, and it does a good job in this. However, comparing this to pretty much every other movie streaming app out there, it has serious shortcomings in other expected capabilities, for example: - Get any information about a listing. For many movies you don’t know what it’s about, you want to read at least a sentence or two to understand it’s premise. Especially documentaries often have an ambiguous title. I have found no way to get to descriptive text, clicking on a movie means playing it. Even if there is information *somewhere*, the app has failed in usability here. Googling he movie is not an acceptable alternative. - Find the shows you are currently watching. Granted, other services like Netflix are also doing a terrible job in guiding you to the movies you have started watching, but HBO just doesn’t have this functionality at all. It would be easy to have a “Continue watching” section prominently at the beginning, but it’s nowhere to be found. There must be some logic in making you scroll all the way to “Westworld” or searching for it to watch the next episode. Yes, the workaround is to put the show in your “list”, but why?

It just works, I don’t know about any of the other issues that people seem to be having, it sounds more like user fault and people not knowing how to use their smartphones than the app it self. You hit “play”, it plays. You hit “add series to my list” it add’s them. You stop watching your show in any platform and you can resume no problem on another one. I use it on celluar(Verizon unlimited) it plays with no problems, I play while on wifi(Verizon Fios) no problems. So, if you are somewhat competent on how to use technology and understand it, you are gonna have “0” problems. 4 stars due to lack of offline playability. Please developers, I just wanna be able to watch my shows while commuting home from work.

There is no section inside the app which displays the list of the shows that I am currently watching. Every time I come back, I have to go to my list and start the show. Same problem in roku version of hbo now (which I actually use way more than ios version). How are you expecting to compete with Netflix when your app itself is so counter intuitive and pedestrian.

If I open up the HBO NOW app on our AppleTV, it turns off closed captioning in the AppleTV settings every time. Leaving the app, turning it back on in Settings and returning to the app preserves the CC setting. I looked at the setting before opening the app, and CC was on; as soon as I launch the app and watch any content, it is off. This bug needs to be fixed.

My HD Netflix and Hulu apps have no trouble playing in HD, but this app is blurry and frequently stops to buffer. I consulted Google and it appears this is a frequent problem. It needs to be fixed because I’m wondering why I’m paying for this if it stops at least fifteen times to buffer during one episode of Game of Thrones.

No portrait support, lost of missing features when compared to Netflix and amazon prime now. Just today I had to uninstall and reinstall the app because it was “out of date” but when I went to update the app there was no update available. Streaming quality is also sub par when compared with amazon or Netflix. The app seems to buffer a lot for no apparent reason. This app needs to be redone from the ground up because in its current state, it’s a dumpster fire.

I liked HBO however their app has a lot of flaws. Parental controls are very awkward. You if you set limitations it takes affect for the account and there is no convenient way for the adults to watch shows at a higher rating without going into settings and changing the limitation for the entire account. Other app will let you just entere the PIN number to unlock a show to watch. Please enable this. The List feature is episode specific for tv shows so if you watch a show you can’t use the list to navigate to the next episode.

I had considered giving this a 3-star review, but when you factor in the wait time, it doesn’t deserve 3. The UI is fairly easy to get used to, because I’ve never much minded searching for the shows I want to watch as long as I can access them rather quickly. The quality is absolutely fantastic on my tv. I don’t have an HDTV but I of course can still stream 1080p. What is a considerable disappointment and the reason I cancelled my service is because of the horrible buffering. I’ve had a lot of streaming service subscriptions, but this one is the worst I’ve ever used in terms of buffering. My internet does just fine with Netflix, Hulu, YouTube, and PlayStation Vue, so there is absolutely no reason why it shouldn’t smoothly stream this app—so it tells me it’s the app itself since I’ve seen tons of other people saying the same exact thing. If you guys can fix the crazy buffering issues, then you will be able to retain the customers you’ve lost.
Parental controls are a pain

The app is pretty easy to browse through and watch but it a huge pain to keep changing parental controls when ever my kids want to watch something and then switch back. It would be a lot easier to allow streaming of restricted content by entering a quick passcode only parents know instead of going to setting and changing everything. This method would also prevent any mistakes in which parents forget to switch restrictions back on after watching. Not well designed for people with kids.

While the user interface has improved a lot and everything looks wonderful it’s completely non functional as you have to leave the app and go to a website if you want to update information, for example billing information can’t be updated in the app which is beyond stupid, don’t you want your money HBO? I’m on the fence about paying for HBO now anyway so if it expires whatever, I’m not jumping through hoops to give my money up.

I would give this app zero stars if I could. I signed up for the free week trial and on the 6th day I spent an hour and a half on the phone to cancel it. It was a huge hassle! I was assured I wouldn’t be charged for it. Looked at my credit card statement last night and I was charged for it. I did an online chat with a rep last night and she said “they don’t do refunds.” After chatting with her for 20 minutes, she told me I would be sent an email from the “higher up’s”. I did not receive said email. Do NOT download this app unless you want to be charged for it.

I lost access to HBO because of the corporate spat with Dish network. So I finally subscribed through HBO Now, but was astounded how incredibly inferior their UI was compared to their Go app, The whole process of adding watchlist items and navigating was so much better there than this clumsy feeling now I am forced to use now. How is it they offer a parallel app to the same content and generate such a terrible user experience in comparison? But the worst thing: according to their user support there is absolutely no way to disable auto play. That is of significant issue with me and I will most certainly drop this app within a couple of months purely because of this. Even the most egregious streaming apps for forcing auto play down their users throats have come around to allowing it to be disabled.

As a Dish customer I’ve been very upset about HBO pulling their channels. I was surprised that Dish recommended HBO NOW. I signed up for it, then realized I can’t watch anything live. And what I have watched is like going back to the old dial up speeds! Stop and go, stop and wait. It took at least 50 minutes to watch a 30 minute show! This app isn’t worth it!

I initially wanted to try this app because it advertises the ability to watch episodes of shows, such as “Game Of Thrones,” the day of its premiere. I downloaded the app with this expectation, and obviously what is available, are the seasons they’ve been previously aired. The app would be much improved (as an insensitive,) if the programming offered, is for early viewing the day of its release, not so much after its been aired on the network.

I have tried logging in with 3 or 4 different methods such as prime or my Tv provider, then the app asks me to create an account. The app has never gotten past this point as it says “Oops! Something went wrong!” Every time you try to create an account. If I try to sign in to an account, the app just says it will restart, every single time. As of today this app is useless.

HBO has very buggy app on Apple TV that it does not remembers if you have turned on captions. Scrolling to next episode is a nightmare like if you are on Episode 2 of season 7 and you want to go to episode 3, then instead of keeping the context to season 7, it goes to season 1, so you need to scroll to season 7. Worst design Their website is buggy that scrolling to skip the intro does not work

I just reinstalled the app for Game if Thrones. We did this last season but kept it longer because we enjoyed the content. Had to cancel for a while and came back. The app on our Firestick is absolute garbage. I have three list options: Featured, My List and Continue Watching. I tried to click on “Browse” and it does nothing. I can search, but even under search is only Recommended Series and Recommended Movies. How am I supposed to know what content is actually provided by HBO if I have no way to browse the library?? First the positive: This app lets you browse and play the HBO catalog, and it does a good job in this. However, comparing this to pretty much every other movie streaming app out there, it has serious shortcomings in other expected capabilities, for example: - Get any information about a listing. For many movies you don’t know what it’s about, you want to read at least a sentence or two to understand it’s premise. Especially documentaries often have an ambiguous title. I have found no way to get to descriptive text, clicking on a movie means playing it. Even if there is information *somewhere*, the app has failed in usability here. Googling he movie is not an acceptable alternative. - Find the shows you are currently watching. Granted, other services like Netflix are also doing a terrible job in guiding you to the movies you have started watching, but HBO just doesn’t have this functionality at all. It would be easy to have a “Continue watching” section prominently at the beginning, but it’s nowhere to be found. There must be some logic in making you scroll all the way to “Westworld” or searching for it to watch the next episode. Yes, the workaround is to put the show in your “list”, but why?
Inferior in all ways to HBO Go?!?

I lost access to HBO because of the corporate spat with Dish network. So I finally subscribed through HBO Now, but was astounded how incredibly inferior their UI was compared to their Go app, The whole process of adding watchlist items and navigating was so much better there than this clumsy feeling now I am forced to use now. How is it they offer a parallel app to the same content and generate such a terrible user experience in comparison? But the worst thing: according to their user support there is absolutely no way to disable auto play. That is of significant issue with me and I will most certainly drop this app within a couple of months purely because of this. Even the most egregious streaming apps for forcing auto play down their users throats have come around to allowing it to be disabled.
Parental controls are a pain

The app is pretty easy to browse through and watch but it a huge pain to keep changing parental controls when ever my kids want to watch something and then switch back. It would be a lot easier to allow streaming of restricted content by entering a quick passcode only parents know instead of going to setting and changing everything. This method would also prevent any mistakes in which parents forget to switch restrictions back on after watching. Not well designed for people with kids.
HBO and DishNetwork

I had HBO and others on Dishnetwork. Before I got the Hopper 3. I was sold the 2 year contract with the locked in price. That I also was to keep all my channels plus my HBO and others. But then within less than a year. They had this dispute. And I lost my HBO. And now I’m supposed to be locked in this contract. But DishNetwork is in breach. But won’t let me out. 17 years with DishNetwork and they are getting greedy and dirty. So my advice is stay away from Dishnetwork. Because I can’t even get Cinemax either. And that was also part of my agreement. I’ll be looking into a class action lawsuit and. Filling a complaint with the Better Business Bureau. As well as the attorney general on this matter. Because I’ve been around and around with them on this.
Shows are good, app is not

The app is just clunky and old feeling. You can finally save shows to your list but it’s not even the first thing you see when you open the app. I always need closed captioning but it doesn’t keep them on from episode to episode. Each episode, I have to open the app, let it buffer to show the connection with my TV and then turn on closed captioning again. Then because it only rewinds 10 seconds at a time, I have to keep rewinding, waiting for buffering, rewind again to get back to the beginning (when the closed captioning should have just been on). Not very assessable
Garbage

I just reinstalled the app for Game if Thrones. We did this last season but kept it longer because we enjoyed the content. Had to cancel for a while and came back. The app on our Firestick is absolute garbage. I have three list options: Featured, My List and Continue Watching. I tried to click on “Browse” and it does nothing. I can search, but even under search is only Recommended Series and Recommended Movies. How am I supposed to know what content is actually provided by HBO if I have no way to browse the library?? If there is a way to browse content on my Firestick, I will change my rating. If not, I’ll be canceling this as soon as GoT is over and won’t come back.
Website doesn’t event function properly

Can’t even log into my account because their website is freezing up when I log in and says that I have logged in too many times and locks me out for an hour. Have called customer service several times only for them to admit they don’t know what’s wrong with it. Have tried on mobile device and computers and through the phone with technical support. You’d think with the millions of dollars they are robbing from people they could afford a team of web designers that know what they’re doing. Whatever the issue is I just paid $15 for a streaming service I can’t watch.

It's a minor but annoying problem on my iPhone xs. Considering that my home button activator is a slide up from the bottom of the screen, it makes it very difficult to tap the "sign in" button without hitting the iTunes subscription button or sliding up. Could you provide some space to click sign in if you're already a subscriber? It would make a hug difference for people who will experience the same problem. Thanks!
UX is horrific

I primary use HBO NOW on my Apple TV. I think whatever product manager or designer who came up with the new non-linear user experience should be fired. What a horrible update. Why do I feel this way? Rewatching shows is somewhat painful. The fact that I have to scroll through a grid of episodes rather than go through the list in order makes absolutely no sense. Maybe if I was watching episodes of The Office where I wanted to find a specific one randomly, this would work but when I’m watching chronological series like The Sopranos or GoT this makes me extremely frustrated. Stupid stupid stupid. Great shows. Please rollback the Apple TV app.
Poor interface

I liked HBO however their app has a lot of flaws. Parental controls are very awkward. You if you set limitations it takes affect for the account and there is no convenient way for the adults to watch shows at a higher rating without going into settings and changing the limitation for the entire account. Other app will let you just entere the PIN number to unlock a show to watch. Please enable this. The List feature is episode specific for tv shows so if you watch a show you can’t use the list to navigate to the next episode.
Volume slider bug

Im on an iPhone 7 plus and whenever I use the popup shortcut that takes me to the next episode after finishing the one i just watched, i think it carries over the volume sliders UI from the episode i just watched and adds a new one for the new episode i began watching from the shortcut. I had up to 4 different volume sliders at once, but only one worked. Just thought id let you know to improve the quality of your app.
No Refund Policy & Boring

No matter what your circumstances are, HBO has a 100% no refund policy. I tried out HBO when I was rewarded 3 months free through Verizon up. At the exact same time when the 3 months ended, my HBO app went to black anytime I clicked it on my PS4. I assumed my 3 months free had ended but no! They charged me $15 for an entire month I didn’t even watch 1 second of HBO!! They don’t care what your reasons are, they’ll don’t give refunds. I’ll be reporting them to the better business bureau. . . The only interesting thing on HBO is GAME OF THRONES. I’d rather just buy the last season as it comes out instead of wasting my money on HBO’s boring other shows.
I travel quite often

I am a US citizen, using US credit cards, and this app works OK when I’m in the United States, but when traveling it is useless as it will not work. So basically, I will be in Brazil for the Game of Thrones season premiere, and was hoping I could watch the opening episode connecting my phone to the television in the hotel. As I usually do with Netflix, when traveling. The whole point of a mobile app is that. After all, if I were at home where I have a regular HBO subscription, I would be watching it on my large screen TV. Basically if it only works well in the United States it is useless.

It just works, I don’t know about any of the other issues that people seem to be having, it sounds more like user fault and people not knowing how to use their smartphones than the app it self. You hit “play”, it plays. You hit “add series to my list” it add’s them. You stop watching your show in any platform and you can resume no problem on another one. I use it on celluar(Verizon unlimited) it plays with no problems, I play while on wifi(Verizon Fios) no problems. So, if you are somewhat competent on how to use technology and understand it, you are gonna have “0” problems. 4 stars due to lack of offline playability. Please developers, I just wanna be able to watch my shows while commuting home from work.

I would give this app zero stars if I could. I signed up for the free week trial and on the 6th day I spent an hour and a half on the phone to cancel it. It was a huge hassle! I was assured I wouldn’t be charged for it. Looked at my credit card statement last night and I was charged for it. I did an online chat with a rep last night and she said “they don’t do refunds.” After chatting with her for 20 minutes, she told me I would be sent an email from the “higher up’s”. I did not receive said email. Do NOT download this app unless you want to be charged for it.
An endless maze of confusion and frustration

App will not let me login using my tv provider credentials. HBO has told me repeatedly that I can login using my cable subscription info with no issue. (I pay for my HBO through my cable provider). But of course when I login I’m notified that I need to still pay them $15 to watch anything! Uh no. I’m already subscribed and paying for HBO. So I try to log out and sign in again. Nope. HBO App is in an endless loop of lock out until I fork over MORE money per month. This is so frustrating I’m honestly thinking of canceling my subscription altogether.
App crashes when connecting to Sony TV

It was working last week when I watched the GoT season premiere, but last night it just kept crashing. Not sure if there was a recent update between last Sunday and last night on this app or my Sony’s firmware to cause this crashing issue. HBO Now app on my Sony has serious buffer issues but that’s another issue separate from this iOS app. I had to do a work around by just connecting in my laptop to my tv which basically defeats the purpose of having smart devices connecting with each other.

The app is pretty good and has great movies and tv shows but my one complaint is the lack of multiple profiles. Let’s say I’m watching GOT and am on ep.5 than someone else watches it and they are on ep.6 I have to find were I last left off and that is very annoying it would be great if you guys could make multiple profiles a feature.

There is no section inside the app which displays the list of the shows that I am currently watching. Every time I come back, I have to go to my list and start the show. Same problem in roku version of hbo now (which I actually use way more than ios version). How are you expecting to compete with Netflix when your app itself is so counter intuitive and pedestrian.
Won’t even open

So I would love to be able to actually use the app and leave a good review, but every time I go to open it, the app crashes before it even gets anywhere. I get a split second of the black screen that says HBO NOW, and then it crashes back to my home screen. I’m using a new iPad, and I’ve followed all the troubleshooting tips on their website, and nothing, still doesn’t work. Very irritating! Kind of frustrated I paid for the subscription and it can’t watch it now.

I love the movies and tv shows they have. The one thing that is seriously annoying is that when you rewatch something you don’t get an option to play from beginning it starts off at the ending credits if you select the next episode towards the end, it works ok when you leave an episode midway. It’s annoying having to manually start from the beginning.

I understand I live in the middle of nowhere so my WiFi isn’t the greatest so waiting for things to buffer is gonna happen but I have zero problems with my Netflix so I don’t understand why I have such a hard time with anything HBO related (not to mention it’s a dollar cheaper with a thousand more options). I had the same problem with HBO GO and now with HBO NOW. I sear if it takes me three hours to watch GOT I’m gonna lose my cool with you guys. You and Dish network really need to figure things out!!!!

Apple TV App

The content and services have been great. My only complaint has been with recent updates. My Apple TV - HBO Now app does not support matching range & frame rate. It automatically plays content in HDR which is not the original format of HBO’s content. This ruins the quality of the video and I have to manually switch my video settings to SDR. If you guys could fix this it would be great. Thanks!!

While the user interface has improved a lot and everything looks wonderful it’s completely non functional as you have to leave the app and go to a website if you want to update information, for example billing information can’t be updated in the app which is beyond stupid, don’t you want your money HBO? I’m on the fence about paying for HBO now anyway so if it expires whatever, I’m not jumping through hoops to give my money up.
Programming access

I initially wanted to try this app because it advertises the ability to watch episodes of shows, such as “Game Of Thrones,” the day of its premiere. I downloaded the app with this expectation, and obviously what is available, are the seasons they’ve been previously aired. The app would be much improved (as an insensitive,) if the programming offered, is for early viewing the day of its release, not so much after its been aired on the network.

The new user interface is not user friendly. It is anything but seamless, I feel like I have zero control over my remote control when using this app. The way in which the episodes of each series is organized needs to be re-looked at. Left, right, up, down - its all over the place. HBO - you have my favorite shows but my least favorite app. 😑
App does not function well

I consistently get errors like Error 102 or “oops something went wrong” and the app closes itself. My chromecast works perfectly with Netflix and I have had no issues with it. Therefore, my conclusion is that your app is seriously lacking and needs work. The idea is wonderful and I love the convenience of streaming from my phone but I’d love it more if it worked properly and consistently.

Love the shows on it but don’t like the app. It’s buggy where sometimes if I exit the app and close it out when I open it back up have to keep logging back in and also no skip intro button. I can’t imagine that’s a lot to ask for. Besides that the shows are great just fix the app.

What is the point of creating great content and then having a buggy app to try to watch it? Maybe you could spend a small portion of your budget on hiring programmers and verification engineers who can help deliver the content without the annoying bugs. I’m using Chromecast with iPhone app. Phone goes to sleep while watching a show. Wake up phone and the app decides to stop the show and start playing a trailer for some other show.

Why am I unable to watch the latest episode of VEEP through my app on AppleTV? The app will not allow me to select it. I can view it on my phone and iPad just fine. I am new to HBO Now. I have always accessed through HBO GO but my provider is DISH and I have had to switch over. Will I be able to watch Game of Thrones live as the episode airs?
Buffering

My husband got the app for our phones and fire stick to watch on our TV. We have to constantly wait for the shows to buffer. One time we timed and it took 30 minutes for the show to even start because it was buffering for so long. It happens on our phones and TV. To help with the buffering we close the app, restart the TV and phones to see if that helps....it does not. It is really disappointing.

Decent app and of course a great selection of movies, but no option to download shows/movies when you will be away from wi-fi. I fly a lot for work and would love to be able to download movies to watch on the plane. Guess it’s a good thing I also have Netflix.
CC problem

If I open up the HBO NOW app on our AppleTV, it turns off closed captioning in the AppleTV settings every time. Leaving the app, turning it back on in Settings and returning to the app preserves the CC setting. I looked at the setting before opening the app, and CC was on; as soon as I launch the app and watch any content, it is off. This bug needs to be fixed.
You cannot watch GOT when refeased

Meaning, when they play that new episode, you have to wait to watch it until it goes into the demand bucket. Or any other live events for that matter. ONLY ON DEMAND. No Channels, nothing remotely live. If that is OK for you then this isnt bad. A little clumsy and slow as far as a UI goes.

HBO has very buggy app on Apple TV that it does not remembers if you have turned on captions. Scrolling to next episode is a nightmare like if you are on Episode 2 of season 7 and you want to go to episode 3, then instead of keeping the context to season 7, it goes to season 1, so you need to scroll to season 7. Worst design Their website is buggy that scrolling to skip the intro does not work

I have tried logging in with 3 or 4 different methods such as prime or my Tv provider, then the app asks me to create an account. The app has never gotten past this point as it says “Oops! Something went wrong!” Every time you try to create an account. If I try to sign in to an account, the app just says it will restart, every single time. As of today this app is useless.

For 15 bucks a month, I expect to actually be able to use the interface to watch the content I’m paying for. The old layout was fine, dated perhaps, but it worked. I can’t browse anything on the new one, so my only options are to search or to watch whatever happens to be featured. If it weren’t for GoT premiering soon, I never would have re-subscribed.

Every week Last Week Tonight has the sound messed up, and it takes a week + to fix it. This wouldn’t be a problem if you offered a free service, but you don’t. I don’t pay you 15 bucks a month to watch new shows a week or more after they air. Fix your problems or lose customers.

Have had the app streaming to Vizio Smartcast for about 6 months. Made it through one movie in that time without the app crashing. Great movies and series but worthless if you can’t watch anything without losing your cool when it crashes.

If multiple people stream using the app, separate profiles should be an option so each person can stream their own shows. Being able to create personal profiles within the app would make app utilization more pleasant.
New interface is atrocious

This new interface is absurd. For example: on Apple TV, I’m trying to watch the latest episode of VEEP. I go to Season 7 and swipe down - except you can’t. At all. You can apparently only swipe down when another object is directly under the heading. Thus, I literally can’t watch VEEP. Because of an interface bug. This is ridiculous.

Frequently crashes when trying to start playback or scrub. Fortunately, it’s stable once the playback starts, which is more than some apps can stay, so that’s worth +1 star, I guess? Chromecast support also crashes frequently, but on the chromecast instead of in the app.
