SoundPrint, Find A Quiet Place
Description
Want to find your quiet place in a restaurant, bar, coffee shop or venue where you can actually hear your date, colleague, or partner? SoundPrint’s own decibel (noise) meter allows you to measure the loudness of the venue and submit (crowdsource) that data to the database. You then can search for venues based on how quiet or noisy they are. Features + Measure and submit the decibel, sound, or noise level of a venue + Search for venues based on their noise level (i.e. quiet, moderate, or noisy) + Simple to use + Help practice safe hearing health + Wide international coverage + Apple Watch/Healthkit integration to analyze your atmospheric noise data on the submissions screen (Apple Watch users only) Please note that SoundPrint is not a replacement for a professional device and should be used for general sound measurement purposes only as it measures the approximate decibel level.
Love this app
by Gregster83 on 2020/01/19 21:34
Easy to use app, novel idea and accurate. Recommend it to all my friends. Even used it to measure the neighbor’s loud music and kept a record of it and showed them how loud they were being!
Add time stamp for readings
by TPGarvey on 2019/11/09 14:44
I haven’t taken and submitted any readings yet and I look forward to doing so, but in the meantime, I have a request: please add time and date stamps to submissions. I checked the readings for two restaurants I frequent; the louder of the two shows up as Moderate and the quieter one shows up as Very Loud. If readings at the former were from 5:30 on a Wednesday and the latter from 8:00 on a Saturday night, that would make sense. Otherwise, these readings are misleading. I’m very glad to see this app and want to promote it, but these anomalies give me pause.
Great idea
by iOS teacher on 2019/09/01 01:38
This would be even more useful if I could see what time of day the sound measurements were taken - lunchtime, early evening and mid evening are often very different. (I can see the time on my own SoundPrints but not sure other people’s.)
Super handy
by ntdooley on 2019/07/19 20:43
Everyone who cares about their hearing should use this! A great idea.
Dissapointed
by VolleyballGrandpa on 2019/07/18 09:35
Found I needed to turn off my hearing aids to use the app. That killed my use of the app. Disappointed! Didn’t see any reason for them to require this.
Great idea but....
by Firstiget on 2019/07/04 00:38
I hate going to restaurants with rudely loud people creating so much noise that I can’t talk to anyone. And, unless at a sports stadium, screaming is extremely offensive. So this app is a great idea. But it needs a lot of work. First it lists establishments that have not been in existence for twenty plus years and leaves out new ones. I submitted updates which have been ignored. Second, the meter does not seem to be very accurate. I have submitted a couple of reports where I believe the noise level was moderate but the app measurement was loud to very loud. Repeat measurements did not improve the rating. Great idea but start polishing the app and data so it will catch on. Four stars because of the idea but only three for its current functionality.
Want to love, can’t use search
by MonsterCan on 2019/06/19 09:53
I love the idea, but I can’t use the search bc it relies on location services, which 1) don’t work on this phone; 2) I never enable anyway; 3) are, in any case, a barrier to planning ahead for visiting another area. If you can add some lines of code to allow search by zip code, I’ll eagerly give it a try!
Calibration right on.
by Sweety7 on 2019/06/19 02:18
IMO this is a great idea. I note that some reviews question the calibration. I find that it agrees very closely with my spl meter. Good work!
Decibels off
by Jawzzzz on 2019/05/21 04:46
Great idea! However I could compared it to my Audio analyzer app, and this app has decibels about 7 higher on average. I’m pretty sure my audio analyzer is more precise. Hopefully they can get the decibel readings closer, then it would be a great app.
Really cool app
by DenverCK82 on 2019/05/04 00:43
Really interesting concept and the app is well designed. Easy to use, like how they categorize the sound levels into conversation friendly and whether safe for hearing heath or not. Good number of submissions when I’ve used this in other cities too. One suggestion would be able to view submissions by days of the week. Good job!
Happy days
by Ryno9181 on 2019/05/01 04:13
I’m just thrilled there are smart people creating something like this for people like me who are highly sensitive to noise.
Original well executed idea
by Nyclove44 on 2019/04/20 00:42
Recent version much improved, especially when searching cities far away. Love the new “submission” history as well. Used this a few times to find and take my parents out to a quieter venue - it was spot on.
Valuable data
by FortuneTellingKitteh on 2019/02/15 18:58
When I go out with friends, I want to actually talk to them. Unfortunately, restaurants and bars know that they sell more alcohol when the noise level is higher. This app helps me monitor places, and identify noise levels. As the database gets populated, it’s starting to help me find quiet places! For planning a nice night out, this app is increasingly helpful for finding a suitable place. Strongly recommended!
Cool app - use it to protect children’s hearing
by Dacoit#1 on 2019/02/09 05:12
Great cool app that is simple to use. Use it often when out at a restaurant with my kids to make sure place isn’t too loud and damaging to their hearing
One of a kind app
by Cb489 on 2019/02/07 23:31
This app is doing something really cool, and for an early product, it's really polished. Can't wait to see where it goes!
Outstanding
by ceteri on 2019/02/07 03:53
I was in a popular NYC restaurant talking with an industrial acoustics expert. We had to shout even though we were sitting next to each other. Just seemed crazy. We used a decibel meter and measured over 100 dB. The next day I learned about SoundPrint and have used it at almost every restaurant since. Outstanding work, and so vital.
Good idea, poor implementation
by jice00 on 2019/02/01 01:11
Looks like not many users yet. Perhaps will get better with more users. Basic business data is from Yelp, but it is also difficult to find the right business. Searching is not good; the filters don’t work. Poor execution of idea.
I use SoundPrint all the time!
by Jxhusa on 2019/01/27 18:47
It is an incredible app that has made a huge difference in my life when it comes to picking a restaurant and the dining experience generally. I’m able to hear my dining companions and carry on conversations much easier when I choose quieter restaurants. Thanks for the help SoundPrint!!
Love this app!
by Jenndoh on 2019/01/23 20:55
Love this app! Simple to use and very much needed! It’s a huge help when we want to find quieter restaurants for our date nights!
No clear how it works
by bse_sf on 2018/12/18 23:44
I didn’t find anything that had a sound rating. And there seems to only be Yelp integration, which pretty much means that I won’t use the app. Yelp is utterly useless.
Definitely doesn’t work on the iPhone XR
by PDSman on 2018/12/09 15:49
When I do a sound check, I get a ‘device not found’ message which I can’t close out without it popping back up again instantly. Makes the app useless at this point. Please fix this!!!
Not accessible for blind users
by BlindAttorney on 2018/12/06 13:18
As a blind person, I was very excited to discover this app. The tutorial even mentions how useful it is for blind users. However, it turns out that they have not programmed it for blind users to be able to read the names of places in the search tab. Hopefully developers will fix this, after which I will probably give it a five star review.

Crashed the very first time it was opened.
Doesn’t work with iOS 12.1
by CityProfA on 2018/11/27 19:03
Calibration isn’t compatible with iOS 12.1 and asks for me to send them an email with the info.
Does not seem to work on iPhone xs
by EveryCogentNameIsPicked on 2018/11/21 15:43
“Device not found” errors. Great idea - seemingly inconsistent execution in the iOS universe.
Test it on an iPad
by Deborah-B on 2018/11/02 19:40
I gave the app only 3 stars because it runs on an iPad, but seem not to have been tested on one. The “start” button covers the line saying that samples must be at least 15 seconds. And if I try to submit with name and email, the pop up keyboard covers up the boxes I want to type in. Either fix the UI (probably straightforward) or mark the app as iPhone only. I tried to get a top 10 list and it said there weren’t enough submissions. I would like to be able to request a top-10 list for another location than my current one. Another location-related issue. I am in Mountain View, and I want to find a quiet restaurant in Palo Alto. I can’t set my location of interest in any way, so for every search I have to move the map from Mountain View Palo Alto again. This is going to be painful if I am looking for quiet restaurants farther away, like San Francisco.
Hmmm

Good idea, but not working on my iPhone XS with iOS 12.

Great idea but app crashing constantly on iOS12
I found this via the New Yorker and love it
by jake32828 on 2018/09/26 03:35
I found soundprint via the New Yorker and love it. Like many of you, I’m annoyed by the relentless noise in restaurants. But I’d not found a way to reliably and consistently find places that don’t sound like construction sites. Now that I have, I’m sure I’ll use it constantly.
Works great
by Jpisel on 2018/09/24 02:15
And now I can tell just how loud everywhere is
Great app, needs updating for IOS 12
by bobarooski on 2018/09/21 00:09
When trying to do a soundcheck in IOS 12 the app quits
Love the idea, but sound reading is inaccurate
by Avbo on 2018/07/25 23:13
Perhaps it's just off on my iPhone SE, but decibel readings are about 10 dB too high on this app compared to all other sound level meter apps I've tried, and compared to a professional sound level meter. The app should allow one to calibrate if needed, or just be more accurate on a given device.
Can’t download it
by Alexandra TFALP on 2018/05/18 03:54
It’s a terrific idea, but it’s the first app I have not been able to download onto my iPhone. And believe me, I have a LOT of apps. Really frustrating! I can open it from the AppStore, but that’s as far as I can get. Reduced to using Decibel XPro for the moment, which is excellent, but doesn’t leave information for crowd sourcing, as this clever app does - if it would only do something after I press “open”!
Brilliant. I hope it really catche on.
by Ken NYC on 2018/04/21 21:52
Brilliant. I really hope it catches on and spreads wildly. I just found out about it, downloaded it, and already I love it. Restaurant noise levels are ludicrous. I'm one of those folks who already has an excellent noise level app (by Digital Six), but there's no crowdsourcing there. Now there is! A few months ago I met a friend at a restaurant/bar with good Yelp reviews in Midtown (NYC) for dinner where the noise level was over 90 dB! Borderline permanent hearing damage! We left. But there was no way to report this to others, apart from typing a note in Yelp that no one would ever get around to actually reading. I love this app.
Needs more work
by skateaud on 2018/03/07 01:30
It’s great for rating restaurants in my area, but the search function is just,.. awful. I can’t search for areas outside of my direct vicinity consistently. Ugh.

Good job!
Happy days

Outstanding
by ceteri on 2019/02/07 03:53
I was in a popular NYC restaurant talking with an industrial acoustics expert.

This is going to be painful if I am looking for quiet restaurants farther away, like San Francisco.

by jake32828 on 2018/09/26 03:35
I found soundprint via the New Yorker and love it. Like many of you, I’m annoyed by the relentless noise in restaurants. But I’d not found a way to reliably and consistently find places that don’t sound like construction sites. Now that I have, I’m sure I’ll use it constantly.

This would be even more useful if I could see what time of day the sound measurements were taken - lunchtime, early evening and mid evening are often very different. (I can see the time on my own SoundPrints but not sure other people’s.)
