Great app for amateur and pro photographers

I really like how you can manipulate your photos into so much more greatness.
Screenshots are pictures too
by Brandon_219 on 2019/09/14 08:10
If I could add one advanced feature it would be spot-selected white balance, but I'm content with the controls for the most part. If I could add one basic feature that really shouldn't be an issue, though, it'd be to import screenshots. Why the hell are screenshots excluded? I have this near-perfect photo editor and can't edit 1/4 of my photos. I know screenshots aren't ideal for printing but they're good for testing crops and testing edits of photos, the latter I can't do without making copies of photos thanks to this app's strange limitation. Yes I can test edits on a single image but I would have to note and undo every edit to try the next. It just seems so much more inefficient than simply allowing screenshots to be edited. Edit: added one star. It's good that screenshots aren't completely excluded, but I still wish they appeared in albums like normal photos do. In an attempt to declutter, per developer's response, I feel like they've actually created more clutter in making screenshots harder to navigate and cause needless frustration by making them disappear from albums they're in. If you want to declutter the normal camera roll, that's fine, but favorites and other albums should be left alone.
Won’t let me export
by avisanderson71 on 2019/09/13 19:55
So far I’ve liked the app but I’ve tried everything to export a photo I edited and it seems to get confused with the “Unlock” button right below it. It seems like I should be able to export a photo with the free version but I don’t know. Maybe there’s some malfunction?
Don’t download for portrait mode
by Juicyy314928 on 2019/09/13 10:38
Shows you that you can adjust the background and foreground of the photo but I don’t see it at all. Must be a paid feature. As a free app, this things is exactly the same as all the others
Unexpectedly Great!
by Sh@@l! on 2019/09/07 00:44
I can’t afford all the software professional photographers use, so I have been in-search for an app that gives that professional look. Am still new to this app!!! But it doesn’t disappoint. Totally worth it!!!!
Amazingly, Splendidly Sweet!
by IXI-LittleDino-IXI on 2019/09/03 18:40
I just bought this app the’e other day, and i will tell you.. i am a small photographer creating my own work and this app is perfect for bigger to smaller effects. from colors, to sharpness, to fading and noice reductions, and many more things. i use this app for my instagram, and - wow! It’s works so perfectly that it’s life changing. thank you to the creators of this app. it is definitely worth the 10$. and it’s not a subscription type of buy, u buy it and keep it. 💎 gotta love this. I will recommend this app to anyone that loves taking photos and editing. dark room is the app you need to complete your photography life.
Seems like a good App but keeps exiting.
by JLam1111 on 2019/09/02 05:35
Downloaded a day ago and for a mobile photo editing App it seems pretty good for what it is designed for. My problem as of now it the App will exit (close out) in the middle of editing. This is happening pretty often...like 3 out of 5 edits. I'm running the App on a iPhone 7+ with the latest iOS updates. I hope this is resolvable with an update. As of now I won't use the App as much as I had hope too. Once resolved I certainly will. I gave 3 stars because of the unexpected exiting of the App. The features and what it can do is 5 stars.
Needs shareable filters and layers!
by heyoume on 2019/08/31 16:43
Darkroom is powerful, but I wish it would do at least six more things.  First, the ability to share custom/modified filters. Second, the ability to use layers. Third, import images from third-party photo services like Unsplash or Pixabay. Fourth, film effects like dust & scratches, light leaks, glitches, etc. Fifth, post planner. Sixth, background images, patterns, and customizable colors for frames.  I would like Darkroom to be my all-in-one tool for editing, embellishing, and socializing my photography! Please make it happen!
Crashing on 12.4.1
by ajazz16 on 2019/08/31 15:02
This is one of my favorite photo editing apps on the App Store. It’s near perfect. Since updating to 12.4.1, the app crashes immediately after saving a copy of an image. This occurs most often after saving copies of framed images.
Great features but unstable
by CERDABOI on 2019/08/30 18:11
Although there are no selective editing brushes, Darkroom is probably the only editor with this many editing tools that allows you to batch edit on mobile. The only thing that’s missing is some stability. It always crashes on my 5th gen iPad mini. The only things I would improve is the stability of app itself, the grain feature, because the grain gets wayyy to gritty, and a noise reduction feature. Honestly I think noise reduction would be more important than a selective brush. I could use Darkoom for event photo editing, where I barely finding myself using the selective brush, but then that leaves out a trusty noise reduction feature so I feel like it really limits my options when it comes to picking a project to edit with this app. I would still rather stick to doing the majority of my editing with Lightroom. This app came very close to opening up my workflow but that one feature of noise reduction missing is a deal breaker for me.
Better than VSCO
by AMDphreak on 2019/08/30 05:33
Does everything you could want and doesn’t have a confusing separate Library, and doesn’t charge you for filters, and it doesn’t have bugs that crash the app while exporting. Great feature set, and you can change individual color levels without paying unlike VSCO.
Settings
by nuh uhn on 2019/08/26 21:37
The app adjusted some of the settings between the app and modification translation.
Keeps crashing
by rayzd15 on 2019/08/25 03:27
This app is really good! But for some reason when I try to edit a raw picture taken from the Halide app, it just makes the whole app crash and it made my phone turn off and on (I’m using an IPhone XS Max )
I need help! :(
by Josh arguet on 2019/08/24 20:24
I had the premium app on my old phone, but now that I changed my cell phone and downloaded it again, I don't have the premium account anymore, why?
Very Misleading
by mDevereaux on 2019/08/23 03:14
To be clear, downloading the app is free. “Trying” is it free. But you can’t export anything unless you pay for the app so I feel it’s very misleading to advertise that it’s free. The developer should clearly state upfront that if you actually want to use the app - as in make edits and download the final image - that the user has to pay. I understand the premise of try before you buy but that’s wasn’t clear from what I read. I also find it odd that no matter what edits you make, even simple edits, you still can’t export the image. Most freemium apps allow some free options. That said, the app seems to have a lot of nice editing features. From a usability standpoint, sliders that have a generous margin to snap back to 0 is nice. My suggestion to the developer is to rewrite the description so it’s very clear that the app is not free.
Histogram from hell
by tyronelogan on 2019/08/22 08:29
Sense the last update I places a histogram in the top right part of the picture your editing. Terrible when it covers the faces of the pictures I’m trying to edit. 😡😡
Comments to the developer
by Notapaidreviewer on 2019/08/21 06:31
Here's a warning sign. Unless an app is mainstream and Apple recommends it, one should think twice before downloading. If it's not common, don't be fooled into their recommendations. The other thing is the developer or whomever is replying to the feedback comments should leave this to the pros. Responses like "to each their own" and developer whining how much effort goes into an app or costs are simply childish, unprofessional and add no value. There's many excellent free or little cost apps out there. The inappropriate responses provided by the developer is another reason not to download any of their products in my opinion. Of course, to each their own ;)
Really Solid Raw Editor
by Mr. JimmyJohnsin=Amazing😆 on 2019/08/20 13:56
Has most features found in Lightroom and is only a one time purchase including HSL edits and a histogram. I do wish there were a little more features such as clarity and gradients but for the price it is great 👍
Not a very good app
by Flame272453 on 2019/08/18 02:36
It’s not a very good app, in my opinion. You have to pay for most of the extra features. I was just looking for a free editing app with no in app purchases, and I thought that this app wouldn’t have very many of them, but, to my disappointment, they did. I am usually one to give good reviews, but not this time. Thank you for your time.
Great App!!!
by Photographer1967 on 2019/08/16 02:26
If you are good at taking photos, this is the perfect App!!! It will make your work look awesome! I love it! If not...well then go for one of the more crazy complex apps and “photoshop” all the errors in the original photo. I simply love it.
this is the most...
by mrkgage on 2019/08/11 14:11
... fun i’ve had taking and editing photos and videos in a long time! i had no idea this app offered the variety of top notch editing capabilities along with the really fun stuff (motion blur, light trails) as it does. everything is easy to use yet completely professional while allowing the user upmost creativity... and i have not even bought the lenses, yet. bravo!
Curves!! Glorious Curves!
by GIULIO SCIORIO on 2019/08/07 00:29
Over a year ago, I remember thinking how good Darkroom would be once it had RGB curves. I reached out to the dev on Twitter but quickly lost hope. I mean, without knowing the distribution of RGB, you can’t make proper edits. Now you can and it’s super good. 😄
Used to love it
by boi number 2 on 2019/08/01 22:56
I think it’s ridiculous that you have to pay for a feature that was already free. Overall it’s easy and fun to use
Solid App
by Chickentoes3 on 2019/07/29 19:39
I took a Photoshop class in school, and this app has tons of similarities in tools, which is awesome. This app is amazing to correct lighting that went wonky in a photo, or to bring out more color in your photos. I read in another review that you guys are a small team, so thank you for working as hard as you do to create such an amazing app! Keep it up!
Absolutely ❤️

iPad 11/ Darkroom- Made for each other
by Fotomagician on 2019/07/22 01:37
Im drooling. Darkroom is a God send. You guys nailed it! I’ve been a professional photog for 18 years and never dreamed I would be editing in RAW on an iPad. This app is flawless. I’m blown away!!
Excellent app
by Milanjv on 2019/07/19 07:11
This app enabled me to replace my MacBook Pro for iPad Pro. Functionalities that are included in the app are performing well, but few are missing for the app to get 5 stars (brush tool, clarity, noise reduction to name few). When those are added it will be solid 5 stars. In the meantime, I can still I can recommend it.
RAW image processing isn’t usable compared to others
by Gevork g on 2019/07/04 20:35
This app has the potential of being great. It has the library support and copying edits across many pictures by pasting. Overall the feature set is ok , but I noticed the biggest problem compared to other apps for RAW image processing. This app shows the RAW image file with muted colors and a white haze across the image. Adjustments that O make aren’t the same adjustments as in Lightroom or Affinity Photo, or even After Light 2. Is it the RAW image processing or the was it show the image? Ive tried many images back and forth with the other apps, and I cant get a desirable edit on Darkroom the way I get it on Lightroom or Affinity Photo. I cant get that crisp vibrant photo I want. The end result looks muted, off color, and not clear, with noise. I like the potential for the app, but it needs to update its RAW image processing algorithm to make it useable and on par with the other apps.

Love the workflow, hate the bugs

Constant freezes, never gets fixed. Would give anything for a stable version of this app. :(
Wonderful App
by EJacobTorres on 2019/06/27 11:25
Darkroom is a wonderful app that combines some of the power of a desktop editing station with the portability and ease of use of a cellular device. Darkroom utilizes many of the primary features of other editing apps, but adds the ability to fine tune further than any app I’ve used before. One slight issue; photos saved don’t appear in the camera roll album inside of the Darkroom app. Favoriting, deleting and re-saving, nothing works. Thanks for such a great app!

Where did the curves and color go?
by Besosbabes on 2019/06/19 23:23
Hello does anyone know why the curves and color tool has been removed when I go to edit a picture through iPhoto? Rather than pulling up the actual app? :( it was amazing when I could edit everything through my gallery.
Intuitive user interface!
by Danielle Pan on 2019/06/15 23:15
After playing around with some of the editing tools (love that you can try out the paid tools before purchase!) I’ve decided that their app is the most comprehensive and intuitive. I would love if you could display presets/filters in a grid-like or continuous scroll design, favorite them, and rearrange the order. It’s time consuming to manually click each preset and remember which ones I like better or worse.
I am an old school photographer & artist & need HELP!
by Mom of 5 designs on 2019/06/15 22:09
I love these apps and since I’m reviewing ‘Dark Room Editor’ I feel like I never developed film in art school, I hope you don’t mind if I give everyone what we had to do in order to get that ONE perfect shot..So go in your mind, if you’re as old or close to my age..1978 at ‘School of Visual Arts’.. Every night, in my attic no less, I would literally put my finished roll of film in the developing canister mix, from there I would sit in the dark, gentle move the canister a few times to develop the film. After it developed I would hang it to dry, it took forever, then place the developed film into the projector, pick the shots I wanted printed, take it to my developing trays WHICH was very volatile & I always had a sign up ‘do not smoke in darkroom’ (that we always ignored) had 3 trays of developing liquid including a stop & rinse bath. After I reached the time where I thought the picture was perfect, I’d place the photo in the tray to stop it, went into the STOP rinse, turned on the lights and, boom 💥, i usually had the picture I HOPED I had done perfectly! As long as I didn’t OVER develop the original film or I had pixels the size of HAIL!! Well not that big..but it was all done by trial and error..So WHY as a still pretty good photographer, only 59 yrs young, I feel like I have NO CLUE on how to get that ‘perfect SHOT! Can anyone STILL teach an old-Er lady how to use these apps?!! I’m assuming most of these apps are downloaded by ONES YOUNGER than me! Yes I gave it 4 stars because I am also an artist (NOT by computer) but I can follow directions. I’m just not finding out on ‘Dark Room Editor’ directions? And if they’re there, how come I feel like I’m trying to interpret another language??!! Of course the examples I see are fabulous and I want to achieve excellent results. So as a beginner in these photo apps, does ANYONE have basic advice for an advanced old time photographer?! Sorry so long, but I just want to take full advantage of a great hobby :-) Thank you, Donna (mom, artist, grandma..and trying to learn new ways & changes old things) 👊👊
Like the App Interface, good basic editing
by asteroidbooty on 2019/06/13 16:36
Lovely interface! Would like to make this my primary editing app, but there are still a few features missing (see other reviews). Overall, it has most of the things you need to edit photos quickly. The asking price for additional filters is also pretty reasonable. However, pre built filters aren't what I want most. If prioritizing new features, please work on retouch tools next and add a way to resize images easily. Edit: I would like the ability to resize photos to reduce file size for easier sharing. Also crop for upload to social media - the popular aspect ratios are 1:1 , 4:5 and 16:9. Thanks!

Great app
by srtRish on 2019/06/09 03:23
EDIT: Bought the pro tools ie the color adjustment curves from my iPad & it still shows them as locked on my iPhone, not sure what's going on there. EDIT: I restored previous purchases & that fixed it. The latest update has it all glitchy and freezing fairly frequently. (On a XS) But other than the few glitches as indicated above, the app is amazing. I personally am not a huge fan of the built in filters but we can create our own ones so that covers it. Also, not all the pro tools you might but the ones present are implemented well enough. UI as well as UX is on point & not gonna lie I've gotten some pretty amazing results from it. So good work developers. Also, the FAQ section on the website time & again highlights "we couldn't do this or we removed this feature because we're only 2 & can't maintain it.."; while I can understand this, I definitely do not appreciate it. When you have one of the higher priced popular apps on the Apple store, managing the number of developers or maintaining required new features should come with it. Someone who pays $30 for an app shouldn't have to hear X or you can't be fixed or implemented just because there isn't enough manpower. But rant aside, if you're reading this & want to know if this apps with it, yes it is. I didn't buy everything simply because I'm more of a DIY kind of person but for a one time price & no subscription fee, this app absolutely does what it says & does that amazingly well. Cheers!

The developer of this app needs a attitude adjustment. Your response to that customer was out of line, childish, and unprofessional not to mention childish.
Fantastic

Fun app
by Dave 2347 on 2019/05/26 10:47
I like this app for doing quick changes to a photo the fact that it will link and send right to Instagram and other sites is nice. The things I would like to see it do is allow you to pick just a certain spot on the photo to change and a little more control over whites. We do a lot of outdoor waterfall, lake, ocean etc shots. I would like to be able to just take a section of a bush and change to colors on it like in Lightroom. Overall a great app that I use a lot.
Reading the reviews...
by COLORADOAPPUSER on 2019/05/24 13:42
I’ve just downloaded this to try it out. But let me say after reading the responses by the developers to some of the reviews I’m hesitant to put money towards the app. My question, why come across as offensive and upset whenever anyone gives you less than all stars and makes suggestions? Apple, how can you continually highlight this app when you see some of the responses by the developers? You continually suggest you aren’t a pro app, only a team of two etc. That’s fine, then I would suggest making the price less, or even free, until it’s fully ready and it might help you build a loyal following. Most would consider that price point to have a fully polished app ready to work in every way. Just don’t be offended when people who really care make suggestions. By the way I rarely review, this just really caught me by surprise. Not a good way to build loyalty with your brand. Accept the criticism and use it to get better...
Best photo app
by cocoahma on 2019/05/20 17:10
As an adult user of a photo app I like a serious app. I am not interested in putting noses and ears on my subjects.I want to work with the basic elements I have already in the photo. I have the serious tools to do that with darkroom. This is the only app I use for over 100,000 photos. I love it’s simple but serious tools that give me all I need to enhance and style but never alter by basic photo. Thank you. This is the only app I use ever. I deleted photo shop. To complicated for my goals. All the rest were meant as a playful apps for the most or they lacked the order and directness of Dark Room. I will not go back to an android phone because you cannot get Dark Room. Thank you so much for this app. It is the best!
Good, it could be better given the price
by Jase1125 on 2019/05/18 21:01
Also, deduct a star for the dev giving snarky replies to honest reviews. That is not a way to gain customers and loyalty.
A little question
by ixland on 2019/05/18 14:44
Hey dear Darkroom team, Firstly, it was a very nice experience to use your app. You know, you guys have got the best interface in a market, But I do need to ask you a question that if you want to add a precise editing feature to your app because your app has been nearly perfect except for the absence of that one little feature. And I’m really sure there are a lot of people out there who are willing to pay you for that. To be honest there are some apps which have already had this feature and charge less, but I believe Darkroom will still be the best if that feature has been added. :)
Great app!

Buggy with EOS R raw files
by kyslowe on 2019/05/16 08:09
My primary camera is the Canon EOS R and when I import raw files from the camera it crashes the app on editing and exporting. It might not just be the app. It might also be Apple's raw system for this camera.

No Histogram, No Noise Reduction
by KeithShepard on 2019/05/05 14:13
Cons: - No histogram. - No noise reduction. - No highlight, lowlight clipping. - Too expensive considering it doesn’t have histogram. Pros: - A set of lovely filters. - Nice integration with iOS. I want to like Darkroom, but it’s worthless as a RAW editor without a histogram or noise reduction. A histogram is extremely important and should be a requirement for any image editor that works with RAWs. You can’t eyeball highlight levels. Monitors lie, histograms don’t. The lack of noise reduction is also disappointing. Nearly every RAW file has some level of noise that needs to be dealt with. If you’re regularly working with RAWs, look some place else or at the very least, wait until they add a histogram. Don’t make my mistake.
Great I love it

Ripped off??
by EdK Photo on 2019/05/04 18:55
When I opened this $9.99 app on my iPad it wouldn’t recognize the fact that I paid for the PRO version which I purchased using my iPhone. So now I can only use it on iPhone which makes it useless for my needs. $9.99 down the toilet.
Nice but.....
by Horserious on 2019/05/03 04:47
It’s a nice app but needs a lot of work. The interface looks good, but it’s lacking a few key features such as white balance, exposure slider etc. As said, nice app but not worth the asking price of 9.99. If I apply a b&w filter and I notice that the saturation slider is set to zero, I’m out. Sorry. The idea is nice, so is the group of ppl you’re targetting I reckon. I’m not impressed by the developers answer at all. It’s not worth $9.99. What about an exposure slider, dehaze, WB, reversed vignetting, etc, etc. there are better apps for less. And if you say you enjoy this as a pro you’re not a pro. And I never said I didn’t like the app. All I say is that it’s not worth $9.99. I will be happy to give more stars if you come up with an app that’s worth the money. In other words, keep working on it and add pro tools in the future. Basic tools like exposure and white balance should be in here to start with. Then there are whites, highlights, blacks, shadows, vignette to the darken or lighten. Ah well I think you know what’s there. Oh and I have some positives too. Interface is nice, intuitive, it’s fast and frames are a nice tool too. When it comes to filters I would suggest not to put too much energy in filters. There are many (free) apps who can do the trick. And, in the bigger scheme of it all, “how many filters do we really need?”. Good luck, keep up the good work.

Intuitive and powerful photo edit tool deluxe. I’m a power user who appreciates the KISS power employed in the software. The people behind this product have proven their considerable skills in this freely distributed Apple app. Thank you Dark Room
Not worth the money

Great App but... no noise reduction tools!
by Bernedb on 2019/04/30 16:43
This is truly an amazing app for post processing but it is lacks one feature that always makes me go back to other editors. There is no noise reduction tools. It would be awesome to have these tools within the app. Please consider adding these features as it would tremendously improve the functionality of the app.
Now with Photos support
by eleanayoo on 2019/04/25 20:35
A photo app without Photos extension support - a nogo. But now it has it :) - fast - easy - beautiful Probably going to buy Pro Tools...
Exceptional Lightroom competitor
by Tallflip77 on 2019/04/24 18:00
It's a great app for the price point. I'd rather pay 9.99 to own it rather than to pay 9.99 /mo for creative cloud. The only thing missing is a clarity/structure slider, and masking tools like on Google Snapseed which is free. I like the batch processing feature.
Incredibly responsive!
by johna30305 on 2019/04/24 00:21
I am an amateur photographer. But I must say that Darkroom takes my photos to a whole new level! Recently, I thought that I was experiencing an issue, and after a couple of emails to their feedback address, Jasper explained where I could find the screenshots album in the app. I would highly recommend Darkroom to anyone who uses their smartphone as their primary camera!
Impoverished
by soundrec. on 2019/04/18 11:14
I see I can use some of the functions of the app without having to purchase the program. I really appreciate that. Don’t have the funds to have all the options but when I turn this around I would consider it totally. Thanks 🙏
New icon!
by Maui Kid on 2019/04/17 03:39
I actually liked the new icon!! Just remove the “b”. Great app and lots of nice tools. Bought the full IAP to support the development of the app! 5 stars!
I really want to move to iPad only photo editing, this is almost the app I need
by zedkolk on 2019/04/14 05:19
I would LOVE to sell my mac and move to iPad only photo editing, but before I can do that I need an iPad app that includes the functionality I have from Lightroom Classic (Lightroom CC doesn’t have all the features I need). I found Darkroom from The Sweet Setup and its definitely the best photo editing app I’ve tried but it doesn’t quite make the move for me. I shoot primarily events and landscapes, sometimes portraits. Required (for me) features that this app does have: RAW support Custom filters Paste edits across multiple photos (the batch edit feature wasn’t working for me, I wish it did) Batch exports iCloud Photos support Ability to tap to change adjustments instead of drag a slider Required features that are missing (or I can’t find): Brushes (for highlights, shadows, saturation, etc...) Spot healing brush or repair tool (I forgot what Lightroom calls it, the shortcut is Q) Wishlist that isn’t a dealbreaker: Dropbox support Ability to view iCloud photos with the date added view in addition to the chronological view What’s nice but isn’t a required for me: Modify copyright metadata on export Favoriting an image in Darkroom also favorites it in Photos
Awesome! But one thing missing
by Charbuckeye14 on 2019/04/14 02:03
This app is amazing, i bought the whole package, but there is one thing missing. Im not sure if i just cant find it, or it just doesn't have it, but i wish there was a “wipe” feature for when your using filters, so you could change the filter of the image, but use an eraser and restore some of the image.

HIDDEN COSTS

Neat app but LOTS OF HIDDEN COSTS. I’ll stick to other apps that do all this at a flat fee
Wonderful editor
by He's shah on 2019/04/03 20:37
Only thing I might have against this is there are not tools to get rid of any blotchy spots. Like a clone tool in light room. But other then that this might be one of my favorite editing tools for the mobile.

Need Apple Pencil support, dodge and burn
by Terrybreedloveportraits on 2019/04/01 17:11
I really like this app on my iPad Pro. I give it a 4 star rating and would be 5 star if I could use my Apple Pencil to dodge and burn and use other tools such as smudge precise areas. I will switch over to Adobe Photoshop full version when it arrives on iOS just for that.

Halide + Darkroom = 🤩
by akazmucha on 2019/03/31 05:04
Darkroom is by far my favorite editing app on both iPhone and iPad. And its seamless integration with Halide makes it even easier to shoot and edit in one go. The interface on larger iPads is also one of the easiest to learn, yet most powerful you’ll find.

Don't settle for poorly lit, dark, messy camera phone shots. With Darkroom, you take the raw photo, and with simple cropping, awareness of the subject, lighting controls and filters, one can make FANTASTIC portraits, landscapes, abstract...everything and anything you can think of..even some you can’t! GET DARKROOM, GET SHOOTING 🔥🌝🔥
Today’s update killed performance
by Madmax37One on 2019/03/25 23:23
Trying to edit 42mpx RAW files on IPad Pro and it is slower now than ever. You load the photo, and it locks up the user interface. Then you wait ..wait ...wait until program responds to allow editing of said photo. Did you guys even test this app with real RAW,photos? Some of us like to edit larger raw files with iPad pros. For that , this app is terrible. Apples own built in photos handles the same RAW files with ease. Why can’t your app do the same?
Could benefit from more features

Big fan of Darkroom! 4.5 stars
by Malik Blasingame on 2019/03/24 02:11
I moved to Darkroom from Lightroom CC about 2 months ago now since I’d rather pay a one-time fee rather than a subscription. My experience with Darkroom has been great! However, the only thing keeping me from purchasing the full app are the lack of a few key features: - Selective Adjustments (this is the main one) - Healing tool (spot removal) - Noise Adjustment These are listed as future features on Darkroom’s website, so hoping these will be coming very soon (especially the selective tool!). Nonetheless, Darkroom has been wonderful for my photo editing, and I highly recommend it! 😄 P.S. This is my first time writing an app review. I decided it was worth doing so for Darkroom since I’ve gotten lots of value from the app and wish to see it succeed. 🙂

Annoying nag-a-thon
by Tom Steele on 2019/03/14 02:09
I get it, you want money. But I haven’t even so much as given you permission to look at my photos yet and you are demanding $6.99. I try to load one of the 45 curated filters to try it out and you hit me up for $9.99 - seriously. It’s like the bad date that “forgot his wallet” wanting me to pay for everything and we haven’t even hugged each other yet. Thank you, next.
App does not sync properly
by Ar-By on 2019/03/13 19:52
A big selling point of this app is that it supposedly preserves edit history. It does not do so. If you make edits on your iPhone, when you sync, the edit history is preserved on your iPhone, but it is not preserved on your iPad. The developer admits this on the help page, saying: “Edit Syncing: sorely missing, and very complex. But there is a hack! Export your photos and use Modify Original. In that case the edits and original are bundled, and we can restore those on your other device.” Obviously, there should be no need for a hack. In addition, the hack does not work for me when I sync between my iPhone and iPad. This app never should have been an “Editors Choice.” Shame on Apple.
Amazing editor, great drop in replacement for Photos
by sitheris on 2019/03/11 03:06
I’ve switched from editing in Apple Photos to Darkroom (using RAW captures from Halide) and it has drastically improved my mobile photography beyond what I could imagine. Darkroom is a great editor and I absolutely love the workflow and editing control it provides. My only gripe is that sometimes the app crashes when zooming in on RAW captures, but other than that I highly recommend Darkroom for any serious mobile photographers.
As a professional, this is my go to
by dan beltran on 2018/11/12 04:58
I absolutely love darkroom. It has all the controls I want for editing in my iPhone without getting clunky or bogged down with unnecessary extras. If I want to do complicated functions I’d do it on my computer. One request I have is to be able to reorder adjustments so for instance I could move temperature and tint up to the top. I work in Lightroom all day and it would be nice to reorder them to what’s familiar instead of hunting down the adjustment I’m looking for. Darkroom has serious updates so often I can’t imagine they aren’t already working on this, I’m sure it’s just a matter of time. Thank you for making a pro editing tool that just works.
Great app
by srtRish on 2019/06/09 03:23
EDIT: Bought the pro tools ie the color adjustment curves from my iPad & it still shows them as locked on my iPhone, not sure what's going on there. Cheers!
Crashes when zooming in on raw photos 😣
by papaSnoot on 2018/12/22 12:16
Let me start by saying that I really WANT to love darkroom. It is tightly integrated with halide and other camera apps, and the amount of control available in the app is amazing. I also love that you can super easily switch between raw and other versions of your pics. So the reason I just can’t love this app is because for me it is unusable. I am using halide to shoot raw photos and when I edit them in darkroom as soon as I zoom in close on a raw photo and try to pan the view, the app crashes. This happened every time with any raw photo weather it was shot on halide or another iPhone app, or shot on my Sony a6300 and imported through photos app. I have tried deleting the app and rebooting then reinstalling but it just does the same thing with raw photos. Very disappointed. Hope the devs can fix this soon else I really can’t use the program. If this gets fixed it’s easily a 5 star rating!!
Very useful even for Pros
by Besdayz on 2019/02/15 08:30
I use this app when I want to import dslr images (via google drive or canon) to my iphone and display these images on social media or photo share. Obviously I won’t be printing from iPhone files since it’s smaller resolution files. For pro work I would use the real file on my computer and adobe products to edit. But for a quick edit with some nice filters curves perspective cropping and sending previews to clients or even personal use this works well. What I really like is I don’t have to save as a edited image and duplicate files since all edits are non destructive and can easily revert to originals. My suggestion for the developers would be people like me would love more functionality that more closely resembles what I can do on Lightroom or photoshop. I know that means more cost but off top of my head I would really like things like 1) stitching images for panoramas 2) focus stacking 3) spot removal (brush tool) 4) masks (for local edits) 5) hdr 6) more filters esp for B&W. I would pay for these. Carbon has some good ones. 7) Gaussian blurs 8) gradients 9) selective coloring (making eyes whiter, teeth whiter etc) I realize this may be a sophisticated set of functions for a mobile app but hopefully in future it is available.
Restored previous purchases
by thinkman on 2018/04/02 12:59
Not the most intuitive means of restoring previous purchases but FINALLY found the settings menu and now all is well. 3 stars because this should also be a full resolution iPad app. Take care of that and this review goes to 5 stars. After the developer responded to my 3 star review saying “Apple doesn’t make it very easy for us to restore purchases……”, I have to add that this has never been case with other Apps – in this case it was a matter of finding the settings to be able to do this. My feelings are that developers need to standardize on the look and position of the settings gear! I upped my review by a star as they noted they were working on an iPad version, even though I feel it should have been developed for that in the first place. If this happens, I’ll make it a 5 star review.

RAW editing needs improvements
by masnun on 2019/03/10 01:42
This is a great app. I love the UI and UX. Love the integration with Halide. The filters are great. Copy hashtag feature is absolutely great - love it. But what I think needs more work is raw editing features. The photos are underexposed sometimes. Even after increasing exposure and brightness, they remain underexposed. With Adobe Lightroom, the same photo gets a lot of light when I move up exposure a bit. This is my only issue with the app. I am quite fine with it missing some other useful features like selective editing. Darkroom in app purchase is a one time thing, so compared to Lightroom, Darkroom definitely offers better value at a lower price. If the under exposure issue is fixed, I will continue using Darkroom for almost all my photo editing.
Excellent App!
by itsmechris on 2017/12/28 09:27
I recently discovered the Darkroom App. I immediately purchased full functionality. For years, I have made “social media” posts by editing JPG files with less than ideal image quality. Frustration finally led me to search for a better option than the stock Nikon wireless mobile utility and Apple Photos on my iPhone. That’s how I came across Darkroom (and ShutterSnitch by a different developer which allows me to download RAW files in bulk off of my Nikon camera). This combination is incredible; I only wish I would have discovered it earlier. Note to developers: I just sent an email to you with a couple of suggestions that might make your 5 star app even better 😊
DarkRoom
by Amherst Owens on 2019/01/30 14:22
DarkRoom is a fantastic iOS photo editing app that I have been using for a few months now. I really like the slider functions as it gives almost pinpoint accuracy over editing your photos. Also this app lets you edit Raw files as well as other more common file types. You have to buy other functions within the app, but most other notable apps like Polarr do the same. At $5.00 per unlock it can get costly. You don’t have to buy them if you don’t want to use the app and it even lets you try before you buy to see if you even want the extras. But over all its functions, and clean interface make it a wonderful photo editing app to use.
Great App, Developers work hard to keep it that way
by Sunflash.iph on 2018/07/18 00:19
Edit: Thank you darkroom! You fixed the problem that I mentioned in this review, glad to see that you are trying to make a great product. I added a star, cause I really do love this app, but have run into a new issue that is almost as annoying as the first. My edits do not remain on photos when I modify the original. I’ve gone back in multiple times and modified a photo, exported it to modify the original. But once I close the app it goes back to its original state. Will be glad once this is fixed! I really do love this App, makes editing a snap. The color controls are a game changer for me when it comes to editing on my phone. The one issue I have with the app, and keeping it from 5 stars is the that in the library, where I can select which photos to edit, it gets the photo is displays is different than the photo that comes up when I select it. This makes it hard to edit photos cause I’m not sure where the photo I want to edit is, I’ll find it, click on it and it’s a different photo. Fix this issue and I think it’s a 5 Star app
Overall quite good
by TouchTodo Author on 2017/11/29 05:26
Coming from desktop raw workflow, I knew I need to give up something when comes to mobile. This app is probably as close as it gets for what’s out there. One of the key feature I’m looking for is curve, and it (kinda) has it, with fixed highlight and shadow mid point, which for the most part I’m fine with it. The problem I have with it right now, and I hope developer can fixed it in next version, is the inconsistent preview AFTER I did the editing. For couple photos the preview inside the app shows overexposed (after I choose to modify original). It constantly skews my judgement, and esp when I want to copy over edits to other photos.
I never write reviews but...
by drk_adapt on 2018/04/16 02:55
I found myself compelled to give credit where credit is due. As an amateur photographer I found myself very impressed with the features and customizability in darkroom. I have used several photo editing apps in the past including Lightroom, VSCO cam, etc. However; this app offers the flexibility and depth where other apps fall short. Keep up the good work. If you have graduated beyond just point and click filters then seriously look into this app. I bought the one time purchase to unlock all features and have been thrilled with the results. Cheers!
Thanks!
The Very Best
by Mad Chipmunk on 2018/10/06 13:52
UPDATE: This is still my favorite photo editor and one of my favorite apps period. The developer team continues to invest in and add useful features on a regular basis. Recent examples include iOS 12’s portrait depth map and hashtag collections. What’s equally impressive is the thoughtfulness of placement for new features. When an (any) app is new, users like it for its simplicity, but software developers have to improve it — they have to add new features. It’s hard to do that without adding tons of complexity. Darkroom hits an awesome balance. **** This is my go-to photo editor. The included filters are great. The manual controls are awesome. It's incredibly handy that you can modify the original photo. You can use the app to browse and edit photos on your camera roll: no importing. Recent improvements have improved the experience of the user interface as well. I'm really glad I paid for this one. 👍 Hey Developers! You created something pretty special. Nice work!!! 😄
Phenomenal Photo Editor
by johnrsull on 2018/08/11 18:19
The best photo editing app for iOS. It’s not even close. They’ve taken pro editing tools (curves, HSL adjustments, etc.) and made them feel as if they were created on a phone first. It’s so clear that every little detail has been very carefully considered. The library view is excellent - so much better than having to import photos into the app. And the new frame tool is fantastic. Only one I know of that lets you create 4:5 frames.
Great Interface, Lacking in features
by mobilephotographerdude on 2018/06/12 05:32
I’ll start by saying that this is a very well designed app. If you’re looking for quick photo editing with some creative control this definitely could work for you. However both HSL and Curves editing are accessible only through an in app purchase. The same functionality I have to say is, unfortunately for these devs, available free with Lightroom CC mobile. I also found minute changes to things like temperature or exposures difficult. While this won’t become my go-to mobile photography editor, it certainly is worth checking out for its interface.
Impressed
by rickmurrays on 2017/09/27 00:54
Very impressed with this latest release. Tools are powerful yet easily accessible, and the latest UI skin shows a lot of attention to detail, with a few minor exceptions. The export menu is well crafted, with semi translucent dark background, nice typography, etc. However, there are a few menus, such as aspect, border and favorites, that unfortunately use the default grey iOS of old. Would be nice if these were updated to match the rest of the apps look and feel. A nitpick for sure, and certainly does not detract from the remainder of this excellent app
Terrible app/business model/don’t waste your time
by Five0hFour on 2019/01/23 05:12
This app uses the now ubiquitous “charge for every feature" model and that Isashame. The developer had responded saying they allow you to use all the pro features so it really is a "try it for free" app, I say that’s not accurate. Unless your workflow is done entirely on your phone then maybe you can get a solid feel for it, but I don’t trust edit until I’ve examined them on a monitor. YOU CANT EXPORT/SAVE A SINGLE PHOTO IF IT USES EVEN A SINGLE “PROFESSIONAL” feature So yea, you can “try” it, good luck getting a solid feel for whether the results are worth paying for when you can’t even export a file to evaluate the results
Intuitive layout, but....
by _Aela_ on 2018/07/03 20:07
This app is basically lightroom- but you have to pay for it. Imho the layout is easier to navigate, so if you think that's worth the money, go for it. Idk if this app exports at a higher resolution than other apps, but it's basically VSCO and Lightroom CC mobile combined. When I tried using the filters for free, the app crashed each time. Not sure if that's bc of my phone or the app, but it's weird that it crashed whenever I went to the filter section? I want to try the RAW exposure but I havent been able to import RAW files yet. Maybe that makes the app worth it?
Best App Ever!
by cmason05 on 2018/12/24 16:27
I would say this is the best editing app I have gotten. All of the other ones are bad because the don’t give you many options unless you purchase them. This app though has many options even though you do t purchase the full pack. I purchased the full pack and it is by far better if you do that. I would say that the only downside is that the cropping to is very hard to use and I crop a lot in my photos.
FAVORITE EDITING APP OF ALL TIME
by GannonFreeman on 2018/12/19 06:53
The simplest most advanced image editing app on the App Store without a doubt, you won't be disappointed! The create custom filter option is so important for creating an all around cohesive aesthetic for your blog/instagram! Responsive team behind the app as well On dec 8th 2018 I sent an email explaining how important it would mean to me if darkroom came to the iPad! And not even 10 DAYS LATER, sure enough an update supporting iPad was released! Thank you guys, Keep up the AMAZING WORK!
Only one complaint..
by JacqlynS on 2018/07/29 07:30
This app is amazing. Plenty of options to quickly make your photo look like it was taken and edited by a professional. My only complaint is that now I have to pay to get the features i once had for free... I was going to rate this app 4/5 for that reason... however it's not your guys' fault I'm a cheap 'you-know-what' lol. The price is fair, would be worth every penny. I'm just not in the position to be spending money on applications.
Good stuff
by smelting on 2018/08/24 06:37
I purchased premium right away. After being immediately impressed with the design and functionality I decided to purchase premium. Honestly I’m not even sure what the premium vs free features are as I barely used it in the free mode, but I’m very happy with this app and love the opportunity to support this developer. They’ve done a great job. It seems as though they’re continuing to expand the functionality. Highly recommended.
Used to be great...
by RDub76 on 2019/02/18 05:24
This was my favorite, go-to photo editor. The latest version is super buggy. Some of the tools don’t work at all without restarting the app. For some reason the app gets hung up on previously viewed photos; I try editing a photo, but nothing happens, turns out the previously viewed photo is being changed! This happens when trying to delete photos also; the app deletes a photo other than the one selected for deletion. These issues don’t happen constantly, but consistently enough to make the app extremely frustrating to use! FYI, this happens with .HEIC and .JPEG, I am not using this app to edit RAW.
The absolute greatest.
by blondesarntdorks on 2017/10/27 18:31
Was a long time VSCO user, but I’ve officially converted. Dark Room is so much more powerful, and it’s not just throwing filters over your images (although, their selection is great there too). Love that the edits can be saved right to my camera roll, so I don’t have to be constantly uploading and downloading to edit. Overall, Dark Room is seamless, powerful and a must-have tool for creating better photographs.
Best iPhone Photo Editing App
by The Other Elf on 2019/02/18 23:49
I like this app for editing RAW photos I take with my iPhone. While currently I don’t use it for photos from my DSLR, if my next body has Bluetooth/WiFi, I certainly will. One feature I think it is missing is local adjustments. While that might be a tall order for an iPhone app, I’d love to see it happen. I do wish the highlight/shadow tools were less destructive on RAW photos. They behave like they’re adjusting a jpg even on RAW. The temperature tool could also be a little more powerful.
Fun app
by Dave 2347 on 2019/05/26 10:47
I like this app for doing quick changes to a photo the fact that it will link and send right to Instagram and other sites is nice.
AMAZING APP
by MattAttack874747 on 2017/11/22 21:40
I have always used the photo editing options built right into the iPhone because that was the best that was out there, until this app came out, I have had the free version for a while but I decided to shell out the extra cash or the full version and boy oh boy it was worth it! I love the easy to use interface and the ability to edit raw pictures. Now there is a few things I think would be nice features: 1. Ability to open right from the photos app so I don’t have to leave the photos app to edit my pictures. Actually that’s it, this app is so good it doesn’t need much and it could totally go with out that but I thought it would be a cool addition. Great job guys, this app is really a masterpiece!
Of course, to each their own ;)
Intuitive user interface!
by Danielle Pan on 2019/06/15 23:15
After playing around with some of the editing tools (love that you can try out the paid tools before purchase!) I’ve decided that their app is the most comprehensive and intuitive. I would love if you could display presets/filters in a grid-like or continuous scroll design, favorite them, and rearrange the order. It’s time consuming to manually click each preset and remember which ones I like better or worse.
Great APP
by Sweet Allan on 2019/01/03 10:54
Darkroom now can process most of my requirements. It’s easy to use and got great interface, it’s fun using it. The best feature for me is that this APP can process multiple photos with the same adjustments at once, that’s very useful for social media posting. But please make more inspiring filters and more unlock level-up functions for paid customer. In all, good job there!
Great on iPhone—iPad support?
by dalahäst on 2018/10/05 05:34
I really enjoy using Darkroom to edit photos quickly on my phone, but I sometimes like to take all my photos from the day and edit them on my iPad. Darkroom could be really awesome on the iPad, too, but all we have access to for the moment is a scaled-up version of the phone interface, which is less than ideal. The larger screen of the iPad makes more precise editing possible, so it’s a shame I have to use different apps on each platform to take advantage of it.
My only gripe is that sometimes the app crashes when zooming in on RAW captures, but other than that I highly recommend Darkroom for any serious mobile photographers.
iPad version!
by mebejessie on 2018/12/18 16:46
I love that there’s now landscape mode and a bigger screen for iPad users like myself but I’m still bummed about the curves tool because it’s very limiting since it’s already set up in dots and you can’t get the result you actually want by adjusting and instead of getting images to look vibrant they are dull. It’s great for tweaking edited photos with color for me but it’s not a great standalone editor because the curves is just a huge let down which is why I can only give it 3 stars. Thanks for the update!
Broken raw editor
by Evil Eel on 2018/09/09 20:38
I’m not sure what happened with the last update, but it has now been a month in which I am unable to adjust exposure, brightness, shadows, or highlights for raw files. This is a major disappointment since this was my main editor and I take pictures daily as I’m on a long backpacking trip through Europe. Do you know what it’s like to be crippled from adjusting these settings for my photos? In the next week I’m getting a new editor if this isn’t fixed. I’m tired of waiting. It was awesome. Now it’s just a disappointment.

Grainy overexposed bug
by AttackTheHeart on 2018/09/27 12:07
Whenever I open a raw file darkroom seems to auto apply some sort of filter that blows out the image and makes it extremely grainy. If I open the same raw file in Lightroom this doesn’t happen. I cannot use this app for this reason and I have tried restarting my device and re-downloading the app to no avail

Great app for amateur and pro photographers

I simply love it.
this is the most...

... fun i’ve had taking and editing photos and videos in a long time! i had no idea this app offered the variety of top notch editing capabilities along with the really fun stuff (motion blur, light trails) as it does. everything is easy to use yet completely professional while allowing the user upmost creativity... and i have not even bought the lenses, yet. bravo!

I think it’s ridiculous that you have to pay for a feature that was already free. Overall it’s easy and fun to use
Solid App
by Chickentoes3 on 2019/07/29 19:39
I took a Photoshop class in school, and this app has tons of similarities in tools, which is awesome. This app is amazing to correct lighting that went wonky in a photo, or to bring out more color in your photos. I read in another review that you guys are a small team, so thank you for working as hard as you do to create such an amazing app! Keep it up!

iPad 11/ Darkroom- Made for each other
by Fotomagician on 2019/07/22 01:37
Im drooling.

Fun app
by Dave 2347 on 2019/05/26 10:47
I like this app for doing quick changes to a photo the fact that it will link and send right to Instagram and other sites is nice.

Cheers!
AMAZING APP
by MattAttack874747 on 2017/11/22 21:40
I have always used the photo editing options built right into the iPhone because that was the best that was out there, until this app came out, I have had the free version for a while but I decided to shell out the extra cash or the full version and boy oh boy it was worth it!
Of course, to each their own ;)
Intuitive user interface!
by Danielle Pan on 2019/06/15 23:15
After playing around with some of the editing tools (love that you can try out the paid tools before purchase!) I’ve decided that their app is the most comprehensive and intuitive. I would love if you could display presets/filters in a grid-like or continuous scroll design, favorite them, and rearrange the order. It’s time consuming to manually click each preset and remember which ones I like better or worse.
Incredibly responsive!

Great APP

My only gripe is that sometimes the app crashes when zooming in on RAW captures, but other than that I highly recommend Darkroom for any serious mobile photographers.
iPad version!
by mebejessie on 2018/12/18 16:46
I love that there’s now landscape mode and a bigger screen for iPad users like myself but I’m still bummed about the curves tool because it’s very limiting since it’s already set up in dots and you can’t get the result you actually want by adjusting and instead of getting images to look vibrant they are dull.
