Awesome app guys.
Incredibly easy and successful
by DiCasparro on 2020/02/12 01:40
I am a beginner and have taken lessons from two different instructors, who were in my mind, real good. When people told me to go on-line for lessons, I had the impression of a young dud in a garage teaching me what he knows to earn some extra money for beer. This is not the case with GuitarTricks—it’s structured, well organized, has a jam track for most lessons to practice with, and I can binge lesson when I have a lot of time. These folks have guitar lessons nailed, I have no questions after each lesson and I feel progress with each lesson. It’s propelled my guitar success and gratification with playing.
Great Team of Professionals!!!

App isn’t working

I purchased the full upgrade but the app is still not giving me access to any of the content. Either give me what I paid for or return my money!

Love the app, but a few problems
by skyguy39 on 2020/01/14 00:49
I am just learning to play and it is truly painful to get through the beginner courses. The lady is probably so nice, but I don’t want to learn guitar (especially power chords) from a Rosey cheeked lady who can’t sing. It was so hard to motivate myself past those courses. Also the phone app is not great to look at the notations etc, it seems to be more suited for a desktop use. All in all it is a great app with lots of great lessons and ability to pick and choose what I want to learn. Would recommend, but please fix the phone app difficulties and reinvest in new beginner lessons.
Great way to learn
by Miami Beech on 2020/01/09 00:54
If you want to learn from the ground up, or just learn a song, this system can accomplish both. The instructors are great. The camera work is outstanding. And the ability to slow everything down and loop sections to learn is incredible.
Super useful
by Anthonys big torta on 2020/01/06 07:47
I learned a lot from this and it’s worth paying for
Good but Bad
by Gauge silva on 2020/01/04 21:26
This is a good app and it has good teachers and productive lessons( from what I can tell)but you have to pay if you want to learn more than how to hold a guitar. I am for the most part a intermediate guitar player and I knew all the free facts about guitars. I like that they made an app on guitar learning but it’s inconvenient that you have to pay that much money, I’m a 7th grade student and can’t afford this app so I’m looking up tabs on the internet since you’re ads say that YouTube is bad for learning. If anybody’s looking for good websites for learning guitar, Songsterr is a great teacher. Please lower the amount of money greatly. Also you lack half the songs I want to learn. Most are Green Day. Please add Green Day!
The app is more difficult to navigate through then just going through google
by 59 man on 2020/01/04 19:05
It’s muted when the videos start and you have to tap to unmute. Annoying. Just not a very good app or program. Limited songs and some instructors go fast and don’t break not down enough before they move on. I want to know string and fret for each note or phrase.
Good learning and practice tool
by Keith's iPad 4G on 2020/01/04 00:28
The app is great for easy access to good content. I like the instructors level of detail and pace for each level. The app gets ongoing improvements which is good. I use it almost every day and they keep adding content which is key. Update : Nov 2018 > still using Guitar Tricks daily and am starting to use courses for different styles which GT provides. I've see no other online sites that have the level of video training for beginners through to advanced. Lastly GT's content covers many genres. Always best quality for each and every lesson.
Good system but needs a search function
by Gammagal on 2019/12/29 19:27
Needs search for songs
Don’t look anywhere else...
by AjarDruid on 2019/12/28 16:39
IMO this is the best online guitar instruction site out there. There are a lot of great guitar instruction sites, but I haven’t found one with more content. The App is easy to navigate and I use it daily. The App doesn’t have everything that is offered on their site, so, if you’re looking for something and are unable to find it, go to the web site. Enjoy and Good Luck!
Why do we need to pay?
by hello%% on 2019/12/24 23:14
This isn’t fair. If I wanted to pay for lessons I could just get privet lessons. I obviously downloaded this app for a reason. To learn to play for free. I’m disappointed.
Totally worth the price!
by Musecrafter1 on 2019/12/23 15:58
I’ve been playing guitar for over 35 years and in that time I’ve sought out numerous instructors, none of whom were particularly good. I decided to give Guitar Tricks (which is anything but a “trick”) a try. To my delight I have found it to be very informative and covers such a breadth of topics, very easy to use, and very flexible. Even at the monthly subscription rate (vs the annual rate) it is still a screaming deal. I said I’d never have an app that was subscription based but this is different given that it is an ongoing instruction app. So very glad I signed up. My playing and understanding has definitely increased and I look forward to using the app daily. Good job!

Wonderful tutorial!!! Just came back to my lessons after a 1 year absence. My first lesson after my return was a breath of fresh air. Thanks for a wonderful program.
Great tool
by Jediporn on 2019/12/19 04:09
Happy with content Explanations are painfully long in many of the intro lessons. Too much talking not enough playing but if you put in the time content is great
It’s good

Um yah
I am mad
by beddy 69 on 2019/12/14 18:33
I WANTED TO LEARN THE CORDS BUT THRN FIND OUT I HAVE TO PAY?!?!?! THIS IS MADNESS! I just wanted to learn how to play a few cords and maybe some songs. Now I get that you guys have to make money somehow but at least make the cords part free because for the most part I don’t think someone is going to pick up a guitar and play it on their head. So I am probably going to delete this app and get a new one because I am not paying nothing for a couple notes.
Glad
by norrsemanusa on 2019/12/11 21:06
Glad to be back. The last year I left GuitarTricks, I was looking for something better. Didn’t find it, a wasted year later I’m glad to be back, and look forward to getting better at guitar with this method. Sincerely, Tim Norris
Great lessons
by Jim G is rocking again on 2019/12/10 23:19
I’ve been a subscriber for over 5 years now. Great lessons. The three screen video of the instructors face, left hand and right hand makes it easy to follow. Then all guitars 1, 2 and sometimes 3 in the back in track performance makes it clear. All notes are reviewed in detail. I can rock again!
Something for everyone

This site offers beginner to advanced lessons with plenty of songs to learn. Best site I've found.
I WOULD love this app if...
by turtlegirlkk72 on 2019/12/07 01:43
Look, I’m new to playing guitar, and I was SUPER excited when I found this app! I downloaded it, then started the very first lesson. Soon enough I finish, and I go to start the next lesson, and then I see what almost everyone hates. “UPGRADE”. Fricken ridiculous! I wanted to learn how to play the guitar, not how to spend fricken 30 bucks a month for guitar lessons! I would HIGHLY suggest not getting this app if you don’t want to spend 30 bucks for something that you don’t even know if it’ll help!
Omg I love this app
by Dennis Liuzzo on 2019/11/09 03:00

Can barely rewind which makes it take forever sand frustrating to learn
Site nav tool
by Anonamous coward on 2019/10/31 09:25
There are several things I would like to see added. Quick links to songs preview of the entire song in the beginning of the actual class give us a video tour explaining how to track progress navigate the sight. Kind of frustrating when you’re just trying it out before buying. By the time I learn the site and where I place in it and getting acclimated. I know that you guys deserve 5stars but I can’t really navigate the site that’s where the other 2stars are at😊
Exceptionally pleased.
by Kit grant on 2019/10/27 07:49
From a user friendly platform, to outstanding customer support. I’ve spent the last week in beginner classes and am already more knowledgeable about basic functions and mechanics than I’ve ever been watching YouTube for hours. Flawless user friendly app and website, really happy with how professional and helpful it is. Well worth the subscription!!
Amazing app
by Fewsax1234 on 2019/10/17 14:29
This app is incredible. I’m learning so much and I’m retaining the information. Everything is broken down and explained so well by all the incredible instructors. This app actually teaches you how to play and not just play certain songs or follow a bouncing ball. You learn styles, techniques and actual songs. I wish I tried this app first. Couple critiques: 1. The notation in the lessons are difficult to read. You aren’t able to zoom in or full screen the tab. 2. I wish there was a way to mark your progress or mark the lessons that you’ve done. (I believe you can in the actual website but not the app) 3. Add some Bass lessons.
4 years now...
by djmarkos475 on 2019/10/08 13:39
I joined Guitar Tricks as a beginner and now 4 years later I’m feeling really good about the progress I’ve made. I haven’t missed more than 3 days of practice since I started. I admit to being a poor student and I could be much better if I were smarter. I am 57 and have put more time into soloing than learning chords. My plan is to have FUN and not join a band or get too serious. Thanks to the instructors and folks that put the site up. Other than Steve Stine I wouldn’t consider another site or teacher. Good luck!
Don’t hesitate
by deldots on 2019/09/20 02:14
I’m 47 and have been playing off and on since jr. high. GuitarTricks is the most helpful thing I have ever found to advance me as a player. The lessons are in depth and amazing! Every thing is broken down and taught extremely effectively. You can even loop a portion of a lesson until you got it down. Having the jam tracks to all the great songs on the site is awesome! No more do I learn bits and pieces of songs I go through each lesson within a song and then jam to the backing track. The backing tracks are fantastic quality. Kudos GuitarTricks! And thank you, you have me more excited to pick up my guitar than ever! I also go through the lessons when I’m not near my guitar they are so good
5-star content, 1-star App
by ..Ronbo.. on 2019/09/16 20:21
I really want to rate higher because I’m loving the Guitar Tricks content, but using the App is extremely frustrating. The back-arrow in upper left is virtually unusable on my iPhone touch; that alone makes it pretty much unusable. The Jam Station has no navigational controls to go back or control your position (it’s a learning app!), and it renders askew and unusable much of the time anyway. Then, the sound can’t play when the screen is locked, meaning I have to manually futz with my device settings to disable the lock, and drastically shorten my battery life, making it useless for extended practice. I could go on. I paid a lot of money to have full member access, and while I really like the content, I feel that as a company you have drastically underestimated the role of the mobile device in something so inherently portable as learning a guitar.
Very insightful
by Big gun72 on 2019/09/09 03:22
Love the app. Let gives a brief look at why why you are going things. Gives the option to take it to the next level if you want.
Lessons are fine, App needs work.
by jeffitz on 2019/09/05 04:21
No fast forward, rewind, or scrubbing through the jam tracks? There isn’t even a simple way to stop and start over from the beginning, you’re forced to listen to the entire track before you can start over? Super frustrating. Screen formatting on iPads seems a bit off in places. Things are cut off on the screen. Come on. Biggest problem. There really needs to be a way of bookmarking where one is in the countless core learning system and song lessons. It’s very easy to forget where you left off and looking in the history is not convenient nor entirely effective. Good new is that there is a ton of great content, bad news is that there doesn’t seem to be a way of organizing it in a way that is useful to the user in the way of favoriting lessons or bookmarking. I seem to be spending a silly amount of time trying to find things I want to easily return to. The low rating is because these seem like app fundamentals to me. Focus seems to be on the website (where all these functions exist), but the app, which I would prefer to use, lags substantially.
Don’t Believe Negative Reviews
by Riptide8 on 2019/08/31 22:34
Guitar Tricks, their organized approach, small bite lessons (typically 5-minutes), and tracking system is phenomenal. Better than anything else out there. I can’t understand the few reviews that are at all negative (most are very favorable). I think some people just like to criticize because it makes them feel in control, powerful, and good despite their miserable lives. If they could do better, then why don’t they? Hard to do better than Guitar Tricks, in my view. Guitar Tricks is outstanding and I highly recommend.
They say it’s “free”
by pcassada on 2019/08/28 21:55
You can only do two videos for beginners
Edit out fluff
by Soccertsts on 2019/08/19 21:15
I think the app is good from a learning perspective. I think there is opportunity to spend less time with reminding users at the beginning of every video that it is guitar tricks. I think the videos could be edited down to half the time so that students could spend more time playing and less time listening and waiting. Overall I think the instructors do a great job explaining and I save time by not having to drive to a lesson, plus I can take a lesson any time that is convenient for me.
Guitar tricks is a tremendous boost for me.
by Cray992 on 2019/08/18 21:30
I had just been essentially doing warm up exercises and dabbling with various guitar apps. It was not until I started with GuitarTricks I expanded my playing by an order of magnitude. I was basically just trying to exercise my fingers and toughen up my finger tips on my fretting hand. I didn’t not want to pickup any bad habits. It was not until this I began picking cords and building a base. The more I am learning the more I am wanting to play. I feel by the time I finish the beginner courses I will have a solid foundation. From there I can pick up other guitar tabs and other theories.
Old guy learning something new
by Shannon77n on 2019/08/18 02:51
57 year old dude picking up on guitar through video. Yes , you need to be wanting to learn , but the teacher “ Lisa” is super at teaching and going slow. It’s been 3 days with the program and so far I’ve learned 3 chords . I’m stoked, for someone who never picked up a guitar .
My own pace
by T.Bethea on 2019/08/05 00:13
I’m learning more at my own pace with the help of GuitarTricks than I ever did with an actual instructor. Thanks for you help.
Love it!!
by SusanFromPA on 2019/08/02 10:55
I’m a beginner on guitar, and this app is amazing! I learned more in my first week with the app than I ever thought was possible! It’s great to be able to play simple songs right from the start!
Awesome app
by Sir Zigman on 2019/06/28 03:06
I have been a member for a few years. I really like this app and that the instructors don’t have snarky remarks if I don’t want to take a lesson for a few weeks! This app really rocks! You will like it!
Bad
by Sbdjdnn on 2019/06/08 18:08
So what happens is when I’m in the middle of playing a song the bar randomly pops up and gets in the way of the music notes so I can’t read them. Trash app, makes me so frustrated and it’s already hard to find the time to play guitar, but then the frustration of trash apps on top of that that charge you money makes me question what the people who made this are doing with their lives trying to steal my money and my time. Yea right I’ll stick to YouTube videos
I wish it worked
by Pink-Nehal on 2019/06/06 03:27
I was in love with this when I first saw in the website. I bought a year membership and I wish I didn’t. I use the app to learn and it’s so frustrating. It’s hard to Skip or go back in the videos, the app sometimes won’t respond to the commands like going to the previous page or going forward. To go from video to video and have it full screen I have to do it manually for every video, so after evert 3 minutes I have to turn my phone. The classes so far seem good, but the app, ugh just awful.
Newbie
by 69veteran on 2019/05/26 03:12
I’m a beginner. I don’t have as much time as I would like to work on guitar. That said, the content is here and it’s up to me to make use of it. Glad it’s here to use.
Good app
by bsgyh on 2019/04/26 13:57
So far I’m enjoying the app! It’s simple to use and easy to follow the instructors. Only thing I don’t like is that we can’t print the tabs. I mean I get the copyright laws and all but if we can get it right in front of us why can’t we print it for ease of learning? Anyway still a great tool for learning!
Extremely Overpriced
by jlreis on 2019/04/21 16:03
For the amount of content on the app compared to the price it’s totally not worth it. $10 a month is more like the value of the app and website. Do not waste your money, you can find the same things on YouTube for FREE!
Great content, awful app
by Surfer.Dude on 2019/04/12 16:09
I’m an intermediate guitar player trying to catch up on theory. The content is great, however, the app is laggy and crashes a lot. Honestly, I get a better experience from the browser. There is so much potential to the app but it’s just not there.
Lesson Notation and Tools are useful
by DeviantKnight92 on 2019/04/03 10:40
Some people have complained that the instructors spend a long time on theory and much less on teaching how to play the actual material. While some of the explanations are much longer than is necessary for me this may be good for others or less experienced players. Their instructional method is geared more to learning all aspects of the instrument and how music theory applies to the guitar in general. I also find that the more recent videos and content suffer less from lack of explanation. Having the notation available for each video is immensely useful especially if you’re someone who tends to learn from videos on YouTube for example.
Ability to login with gmail
by D3VLPR09 on 2019/04/02 18:54
I have my subscription via my gmail, and I haven’t created the guitartricks account. The app doesn’t allow me to login with gmail. I can only access this via the browser. Please fix this.
Crashes and won’t pause
by ghrgtdhbdy on 2019/03/20 17:21
Really enjoying this app but crashes and restarts videos and the worst of all it won’t let me rewind or pause the video, so I’m stuck trying to figure out a song while the video is almost over causing me to restart the 10 min video for just a minute or two of material.
We will see
by Jnolan8887 on 2019/03/13 06:26
So far so good. I’m liking it so far.
Not bad, could use some improvements
by johnissimo on 2019/02/09 02:21
App needs ability to speed up / down the video, and to loop if posible, like online. Some of it is way too fast / slow and some parts need multiple reps to get it right. Overall not bad though, just a little basic.
Could not be better!
by newby Tom on 2019/02/08 00:47
I think the course is the best online by far. The course is laid out logically and thoroughly so anyone can learn guitar at his or her own pace. The lessons are complete and precise so that every detail of playing is carefully and thoroughly explained. I have never been more satisfied with any online course of any learning whatsoever!
Was great until they killed live Group Lessons
by jwedel on 2019/02/06 07:55
Feb 1st, 2019 Guitar Tricks pulled the rug out from their loyal paying customers by eliminating their Full Access Plus service. It offered 6 hours a week (3 sessions two hours each) for $39 a month flat fee, taught by the fantastic instructors they feature in their video tutorials. I made more progress in a year than the previous ten on my own, but can’t help feeling sour that they pulled the plug ending the best thing they had going for them. Fortunately for me a competitor now offers live webcam sessions plus Live Studio courses. Sorry — had to get that off my chest. This review is intended for feedback on the app, not the service. While the website is feature-packed and great, the iOS apps seem to be mere afterthoughts, simply repurposing their video library and repackaging assets for mobile. AppleTV and iPad apps have the screen real estate to be something special, but lack so many necessary features, so instead of playing guitar where it’s convenient for the user, you’re forced to play near your computer (which might have been fine in 1998 when they started, but severely dated two decades later). 3 biggest oversights using Guitar Tricks app GT boasts a library approaching 1,000 songs (!), yet AppleTV / iPad has NO SONG SEARCH. 3 years ago they added _SORT_ by Popularity, Alphabetical title, Difficulty, alpha Artist, Style, Newest, and Instructor, but no search Artist nor Song. Scroll scroll scroll for days before giving up. On-screen Tablature is NOT resizeable, tiny text requires you take your hands off guitar and screenshot so you can zoom, before you exit back to the lesson. Incredibly Inefficient. Jam Tracks and Backing Tracks are on the site, but NOT in iOS. Most users hit up JamPlay or YouTube to satisfy their needs. Minor quibble, they do have a scrub bar to slow-down videos so you may play along with the instructor, but it does not list if it’s 50%, 75%, or 90% like the website, leading to random tempos from eyeballing it. I feel iOS apps are not a priority there, paying customers receive maybe a feature update or two annually, plus bug fixes, but GT developers continue to fall behind the competition, failing to innovate. It’s my wish they would let another dev firm prototype an app to management, and design a true iOS app designed from the ground up for mobile, using the same excellent video lessons into something more usable. If you don’t mind playing guitar by your computer, the service offers considerable value.

After retiring, I started learning guitar with GuitarTricks. After close to a year, I am now starting fundamentals 2, and feel confident I can play many songs out of various song books. Maybe my rhythm and strumming isn’t perfect, but people can follow along and sing! I am going to continue with this program, excited that fundamentals 2 will expand the entire fretboard. Thank you, I recommend this app.

by Shock&Awe on 2019/01/26 06:07
Hey, I admit the app tends to be limited, or honestly I simply haven’t taken the time to learn the app. Most importantly to me is the content! You want to learn? Then this is the place. I really have no opinion to give about the app.
Not free

I don’t like that I have to pay to learn guitar I really had a chance to learn the guitar and then it wasn’t free and a got upset that I couldn’t learn a instrument I’ve wanted to learn for 2 years
Website is better
by TheCrimsonRaven on 2019/01/13 18:04
Website has more features versus the iPad application. The iPad application lacks the ability to keep track of each lesson progress. The content is very good although at times can be a rather slow pace. I end up playing the video at 1.5x to 2x the normal speed.

Does not display progress
by Brent Wood on 2019/01/10 00:16
I’m rating this based on the app, not guitartricks.com itself (which gets 4.5 stars from me). The app is passable in most regards, but extremely frustrating in that it does not display my progress through a course. On the web site, I can see which videos I’ve completed and easily pick up where I left off. Every time you open the app, on the other hand, it acts as though you’re starting the course at the beginning and you have to figure out where you left off manually by looking at the course section and video titles.
Long Time User
by Lespikit on 2019/01/06 17:03
Some instructors talk way too much, especially with the advanced Learn How to Play songs. When teaching a phrase, why not play the notes as a slow musical phrase instead of singularly reciting the position or name if each note out of the phrase context? It’s really frustrating. I don’t think advanced players need as much hand holding. Also why can’t I search for a single song (mobile app) without scrolling through the lists? On the bright side, I’ve learned many more difficult songs with you guys than I ever did ruining my old records! Just wish you could get those private lesson costs down for long time users. Keep up the good work, I’m still a paying customer!

The app is good. However, it would be nice to see the progress and which lessons have been completed, like it does on the website. Maybe I am missing it..

Issues on iPhone
by jstiwald on 2018/12/13 04:22
The content is great (same as on the website). However after nearly every piece of a lesson, the app locks up and the only thing I can do is close the app, reopen it, and go through all the menus to get back where I was. If I try to go to a different part of a lesson, I can no longer click anything else or go any farther. Would be a great app if it worked more than 10% of the time.
Very good content
by Spinning..... on 2018/12/08 14:29
The content (lessons) have been excellent. The app is missing some of the functionality that the web version has (e.g., lesson progress). I've found Guitar Tricks (web and app) to be well worth the subscription as I've started learning guitar
iPhone XR not supported
by Badbada on 2018/12/06 01:35
Love the desktop site, but the app is a different story. It does not work well in my iPhone XR. Would love to use this outside of my music room. Pleas update to support newer devices.
The best online lessons but an app that needs help...badly
by Kennardy on 2018/11/25 15:29
After finding Fender Play to be terrible, I switched to Guitar Tricks and it is a wonderful learning platform. The content, the pace, the instructors are all great BUT...the iPad APP is needs help, badly! First off, it is very hard to know what lessons you have completed!! PLEASE, Guitar Tricks, progress bars are on the web version! Move it over to the iPad and AppleTV app! Also, in the iPad app when you click on the three bars in the top right for options, the full list does not appear and you cannot scroll down! You can even see part of a word that is being cut off but you cannot get to the whole list. Also, in the bottom left corner the lesson series button is cut off. I can click it but it’s shoddy programming. Lastly, even on free YouTube videos that teach Guitar (almost any instrument) instructors put the chords and/or tabs on the screen. Please overlay the chords and don’t make us download and print the chords and tabs. On many lessons, there are music bars below the video but nothing on them. In closing, if you want to learn to play guitar, Guitar Tricks content is the best but the apps need help...a lot of help. My WORKAROUND is to put a link to the web version on my iPad home screen. Also, my best system is to use the AppleTV app for the video portion and the web version on my iPad with the sheet music pulled up...but I should not have to do a workaround on an otherwise great learning platform.

I have looked at a good number of other guitar teaching programs, and Guitar Tricks is the best that I have seen yet.
I love this app!
by shellerfoot on 2018/11/11 07:56
I am a beginner- I learned more in a week of using Guitar Tricks than I did in two weeks of apps that listen to you play. The instructions are excellent- well presented and easy to understand. My 12 year old and I are learning together- me on a nylon string acoustic and him on an electric and the lessons are well suited to both of us. The only thing that keeps me from putting a 5 is that the app could use options for some of the things available on the full website such as the tools and being able to mark lessons as complete. It would also be a great feature if the music sheets would scroll down with the songs as they are played - songs that are copyrighted can’t be printed which means it is impossible to play along without memorizing the song.
Outstanding platform for aspiring guitarists of all levels of experience.
by Sarswmr on 2018/11/06 02:42
GuitarTricks offers a curriculum of well-taught lessons for aspiring guitarists of every level of proficiency; from beginner to well-versed instrumentalists, to practicing professionals out to maintain their chops. Each lesson offers well-explained tabulature backed by easily understood instruction offered by any one of a GuitarTricks’ outstanding instructors.

Great Learning Tool
by Mark-strat on 2018/10/29 20:33
Guitar Tricks is packed with beginner, intermediate, and advanced lessons. Tons of tools, practice videos, info on gear and types of music and artists. The instructors are top notch!!! The app is easy to use, intuitive, has everything the website has in an easy to use package. I have not encountered any technical problems with the app. I like guitar tricks because they stay true to the songs they teach, the don't "dumb down" the songs, slow them down, or abbreviate them - they teach the authentic version of the song. They do offer some simplified versions, but label them as such.

Structure
by Shane_J on 2018/10/21 03:05
When I was in my twenties, I taught 10+ people how to fly a helicopter, from zero experience to a private, commercial, instrument, instructor, etc. rating, using a structured program. Works almost every time. When I tried taking guitar lessons (3 different instructors) in my advanced years, the instructors had no plan, no structure, no stated goals. I spent a good portion of each lesson watching them display their talents. Then another third of the lesson sitting and watching them decide what they wanted me to practice for the next lesson. It just didn’t work for my mindset. I’m sold on this program. I think they are doing it the right way.
Great tool for learning guitar or improving your chops.
by Word Junkkie on 2018/10/20 23:43
I’ve been learning to play guitar for 35 years and so far this program for learning is the best thing for me. There are always new things to learn. From warm up exercises, to different styles, to teaching songs the way they were played on the record, writing songs, and solos. If I’ve ever had problems with the app, I’ve had help with them. No problems. It works for me.
Good website, terrible app
by daltontx on 2018/10/11 00:42
This app has too many bugs. Sometimes the videos won’t go full screen, sometimes the pause button won’t show up. Not easy to keep track of progress. Can’t access the cords or scales on the app. Not worth the space on your phone.
Learning song section can be very frustrating to use
by 2 many guitars on 2018/10/02 00:20
Some instructors spend too much time talking about theory and other things mixed right in with the middle of the song instruction, irrelevant to actually learning the song, and then fly way to rapidly though the chords, progressions and riffs, making learning difficult and multiple rewinds and replays necessary. (Example; Behind Blue Eyes by Mark Olesky. ) There is no way to mark or loop song sub-sections, so it is hunt and guess tryin to find the section you want to repeat without wasting time listening to the irrelevant taking and or parts you already know again and again . The theory may be interesting , but should come in separate sections, NOT in the middle of trying to learn to play a part of the song. Songs should be broken down into smaller sections for learning , or have ability to mark and loop sub-sections so you can repeat as needed. On the plus side, transcriptions and techniques are generally good, except for songs with multiple guitars in the original . “Just play guitar 1” is a cop out. There are usually very good ways of combining multiple parts for solo.

i've been using GuitarTricks since 2008. Disappointing app on iOS. No search. No favorites. Very difficult to navigate to lessons of interest. Once you're there, works pretty well. I guess I'll just continue to use my PC.
Great content but poor app
by Smart herez on 2018/08/16 08:00
It’s a shame this app with excellent content is almost unusable. The app’s buttons (back button etc) when in a lesson frequently become unresponsive . The video control buttons disappear randomly. And there is no way to play the videos in landscape mode, which is basic stuff! I am using iPhone 6 with latest iOS. All in all the app quality does grave injustice to the awesome content. At the minimum, the unresponsive buttons, disappearing video controls (pause, forward/rewind, no skip back 10 seconds!) and lack of landscape mode video must be fixed on priority. Eventually the app must rewritten by some quality/experienced app developers and experts in mobile app user interface/experience . The great content in the app deserves better software for presenting it! Had it not been for the awesome content, I would have given it 1 star.

There is no doubt the content I encountered so far and the teachers are great. I enjoy the lessons and practices and try to use the app on the iPad everyday. I even dropped fender play because guitar tricks is so much better. But, the user interface and experience on iPad is lacking. 1. It’s really important for me to keep track of where I was and my progress as well as history of usage. While this is available on desktop and web, it’s not on mobile. The need to keep going back and forth from app to website to look at progress and history so I can jump back to a section or continue where I was is the reason I only gave 3 stars. I prefer to use the iPad for everything and I’m sure the future is in mobile, so please make the UX friendlier and easier.
Not iPad friendly
by kpburd on 2018/06/03 15:50

by rich815 on 2018/05/13 15:56
Just updated this app this morning (3/24) and now the video lessons freezing up on me like it never did before and the app is jumpy and jittery in playback. Using high speed WiFi connection (95 mbps) on an iPhone. Was fine before. Wish I waited... Developer asks me to provide my iPhone and iOS info. It don’t matter. I use YouTube, TrueFire and many other apps with video and video lessons and all work fine. Thanks for the developer reaching out but clearly the problem not on my end.

This app may not suit the needs of everyone- but for this senior total beginner it is just the thing. Been taking and repeating beginner lessons virtually daily since Christmas ‘17 (one month) and making progress. Love the ability to repeat lessons over and over. Initial teacher, Lisa McCormack, is clear, patient, full of great tips, instills optimism . . . And makes learning fun. I got a one year subscription from wife, for Christmas. Could hardly be more pleased. . . Except for sore fingers - not the fault of Guitar Tricks! . . . Which rocks! -B .Wade Houston

Boring, overpriced, and they charged me anyway despite cancelling before the trial ended. I emailed support and received assurance it was confirmed cancelled and I wouldn’t be charged. Waiting now for a refund or will have to dispute with my bank. Do yourself a favor and don’t bother. Search Justin Guitar on Google. It’s free and you won’t have to waste your time with crap like this.

Good job!

4 years now...

Good luck!

Amazing app

There are several things I would like to see added. Quick links to songs preview of the entire song in the beginning of the actual class give us a video tour explaining how to track progress navigate the sight. Kind of frustrating when you’re just trying it out before buying. By the time I learn the site and where I place in it and getting acclimated. Could not be better!

I think the course is the best online by far. The course is laid out logically and thoroughly so anyone can learn guitar at his or her own pace. The lessons are complete and precise so that every detail of playing is carefully and thoroughly explained. I have never been more satisfied with any online course of any learning whatsoever!
Great lessons

I’ve been a subscriber for over 5 years now. Great lessons. The three screen video of the instructors face, left hand and right hand makes it easy to follow. Then all guitars 1, 2 and sometimes 3 in the back in track performance makes it clear. All notes are reviewed in detail. I can rock again!
Great app w/ tons of info
by ThtSnpr on 2018/04/11 12:12
After researching several apps I decided to give this one a try. I haven’t regretted it so far! I played when I was younger and got away from it. I started as a beginner with the app and the information it teaches is unbelievable!!! Definitely worth the monthly membership without a doubt.
Total beginner - Love this app!

I have always wanted to learn guitar. Problem is I have no experience playing any other instruments, and no time to go to lessons. I bought myself a decent acoustic guitar for Christmas, and started with this app. I LOVE it! I practice every day, and have actually made a lot of progress. Also, after the first week, my fingers stopped hurting. Totally worth it if you want to get the basics of technique down and actually learn guitar vs just learning a couple of songs. I feel confident that this app + regular practice will get me to a level that I can play anything.
Great way to learn
by Miami Beech on 2020/01/09 00:54
If you want to learn from the ground up, or just learn a song, this system can accomplish both. The instructors are great. The camera work is outstanding. And the ability to slow everything down and loop sections to learn is incredible.

57 year old dude picking up on guitar through video. Yes , you need to be wanting to learn , but the teacher “ Lisa” is super at teaching and going slow. It’s been 3 days with the program and so far I’ve learned 3 chords . I’m stoked, for someone who never picked up a guitar .

by turtlegirlkk72 on 2019/12/07 01:43
Look, I’m new to playing guitar, and I was SUPER excited when I found this app!

Been using Guitar Tricks before it even had an app. Great website and app that always improves and adds content. Thanks Guitar Tricks for all of the wonderful lessons! I am also a music teacher and appreciate the quality teaching. Well done.
Not bad, could use some improvements
by johnissimo on 2019/02/09 02:21
App needs ability to speed up / down the video, and to loop if posible, like online. Some of it is way too fast / slow and some parts need multiple reps to get it right. Overall not bad though, just a little basic.

Love the website and the app. It does the basics and I am able to view lessons wherever I am. Not tracking progress in the app is a bit annoying but I am more concerned with content!
Straight up worth every penny!
by Shock&Awe on 2019/01/26 06:07
Hey, I admit the app tends to be limited, or honestly I simply haven’t taken the time to learn the app. Most importantly to me is the content! You want to learn? Then this is the place. I really have no opinion to give about the app.
Really nice on the go, but how do I mark my progress?
by Theocritus125 on 2017/11/27 20:25
Really very nice, but I can't seem to find a way to mark my progress as I can on the desktop version (though progress is saved across devices, which is great). Would love to see that. *Support for the iPhone X would be most welcome.

All you need 👍🏻
by Willie Stoner on 2018/10/31 14:15
I love Guitar Tricks and all the awesome content. The back button is not the best it is difficult to get it to work. You have to try a few times till it will work. All in all it’s a great way to learn. 👍🏻
Love it!!

I’m a beginner on guitar, and this app is amazing! I learned more in my first week with the app than I ever thought was possible! It’s great to be able to play simple songs right from the start!
Very good content
by Spinning..... on 2018/12/08 14:29
The content (lessons) have been excellent. The app is missing some of the functionality that the web version has (e.g., lesson progress). I've found Guitar Tricks (web and app) to be well worth the subscription as I've started learning guitar
Good app
by bsgyh on 2019/04/26 13:57
So far I’m enjoying the app! It’s simple to use and easy to follow the instructors. Only thing I don’t like is that we can’t print the tabs. I mean I get the copyright laws and all but if we can get it right in front of us why can’t we print it for ease of learning? Anyway still a great tool for learning!

The app is great for easy access to good content. I like the instructors level of detail and pace for each level. The app gets ongoing improvements which is good. I use it almost every day and they keep adding content which is key. Update : Nov 2018 > still using Guitar Tricks daily and am starting to use courses for different styles which GT provides. I've see no other online sites that have the level of video training for beginners through to advanced. Lastly GT's content covers many genres. Always best quality for each and every lesson.

by AjarDruid on 2019/12/28 16:39
IMO this is the best online guitar instruction site out there.
Good job!

by beddy 69 on 2019/12/14 18:33
I WANTED TO LEARN THE CORDS BUT THRN FIND OUT I HAVE TO PAY?!?!?!

The classes so far seem good, but the app, ugh just awful.

by 69veteran on 2019/05/26 03:12
I’m a beginner.

Decent app
by Paulbartolini on 2018/10/27 07:03
App works fine just a little to expensive to my taste.
Structure
by Shane_J on 2018/10/21 03:05
When I was in my twenties, I taught 10+ people how to fly a helicopter, from zero experience to a private, commercial, instrument, instructor, etc. rating, using a structured program.

Not iPad friendly

by rich815 on 2018/05/13 15:56
Just updated this app this morning (3/24) and now the video lessons freezing up on me like it never did before and the app is jumpy and jittery in playback. Using high speed WiFi connection (95 mbps) on an iPhone. Was fine before. Wish I waited... Developer asks me to provide my iPhone and iOS info. It don’t matter. I use YouTube, TrueFire and many other apps with video and video lessons and all work fine. Thanks for the developer reaching out but clearly the problem not on my end.

by Rdelamat on 2018/02/01 19:22
I love the app so far and the content is great, but every couple lessons the video options disappear and there’s no way to get them back. When I tap on the video, no options come up, and so I have no way to put it full screen. Unfortunately, all I have is a phone to access the website and watching on the tiny window that shows up is pretty difficult. Would be greatly appreciated if this could get fixed 🙏🏻

Good job!

Structure
by Shane_J on 2018/10/21 03:05
When I was in my twenties, I taught 10+ people how to fly a helicopter, from zero experience to a private, commercial, instrument, instructor, etc. rating, using a structured program.
Good luck!
Senior, rank beginner.
by DBeachboy on 2018/01/27 00:27
This app may not suit the needs of everyone- but for this senior total beginner it is just the thing.
Guitar
by brykams papa on 2019/01/29 17:06
After retiring, I started learning guitar with GuitarTricks.
Please fix full screen 🙏🏻
by Rdelamat on 2018/02/01 19:22
I love the app so far and the content is great, but every couple lessons the video options disappear and there’s no way to get them back. When I tap on the video, no options come up, and so I have no way to put it full screen. Unfortunately, all I have is a phone to access the website and watching on the tiny window that shows up is pretty difficult. Would be greatly appreciated if this could get fixed 🙏🏻
Amazing app
by Fewsax1234 on 2019/10/17 14:29
This app is incredible.
I know that you guys deserve 5stars but I can’t really navigate the site that’s where the other 2stars are at😊
Outstanding platform for aspiring guitarists of all levels of experience.

Each lesson offers well-explained tabulature backed by easily understood instruction offered by any one of a GuitarTricks’ outstanding instructors.
Total beginner - Love this app!
by tstyle1 on 2018/01/04 13:18
I have always wanted to learn guitar.

Been using Guitar Tricks before it even had an app. Great website and app that always improves and adds content. Thanks Guitar Tricks for all of the wonderful lessons! I am also a music teacher and appreciate the quality teaching. Well done.
Not bad, could use some improvements
by johnissimo on 2019/02/09 02:21
App needs ability to speed up / down the video, and to loop if posible, like online. Some of it is way too fast / slow and some parts need multiple reps to get it right. Overall not bad though, just a little basic.
Glad
by norrsemanusa on 2019/12/11 21:06
Glad to be back. The last year I left GuitarTricks, I was looking for something better. Didn’t find it, a wasted year later I’m glad to be back, and look forward to getting better at guitar with this method. Sincerely, Tim Norris
Great for when you're mobile!
by KabutoUSA on 2017/12/20 06:58
Love the website and the app.
Very insightful

Love the app. Let gives a brief look at why why you are going things. Gives the option to take it to the next level if you want.
All you need 👍🏻
by Willie Stoner on 2018/10/31 14:15
I love Guitar Tricks and all the awesome content. The back button is not the best it is difficult to get it to work. You have to try a few times till it will work. All in all it’s a great way to learn. 👍🏻
Love it!!
by SusanFromPA on 2019/08/02 10:55
I’m a beginner on guitar, and this app is amazing! I learned more in my first week with the app than I ever thought was possible! It’s great to be able to play simple songs right from the start!
