Great PDF reader. Money Grubbing vendor
by Acheron2012 on 2021/11/27 23:34
This appears to be the best PDF reader on the App Store. But it is OUTRAGEOUS that they want $50 a year for basic editing functions. The only good part is these features are not really that important.
The BEST of the BEST

It help me a lot in my work even I didn’t subscribe. Amazing App thanks for the developers
Adobe Acrobat in a Chokehold
by Drunkncow on 2021/11/27 16:56
This is the real essential for any professional that requires editing and reading PDFs on a daily. Switched to this after trying out the Acrobat IPad app, this one is infinitely better. As a creative cloud subscriber, I was in shock when I saw how empty and lackluster Adobe has made it. This one has a lot more features, a lot more accessible, more fun to use, less confusion, and much cleaner presentation. Nothing is hidden here, they want you to use every tool at your disposal with no limitations, unlike somebody else…
Crashes a lot now
by Kinto Binento on 2021/11/27 01:35
Used to love this app. Ever since the iOS update all it does is freeze and crashes. Have tried reinstalling it and hard resetting iPad, still doesn’t work. Will delete review once fixed.

Great app but……

No doubt that pdf exper is a great app but I’ve noticed an issue with my i pad pro m1 edition which is when i scroll through my pdf there is kind of frame dropping and starts laggy but then run smoothly, hope you fix this and I’ll give five stars then

WARNING: Paid App
by All night shopper on 2021/11/19 06:50
Obnoxious app that masquerades as ‘free’, but is actually a pay-app. You can just use Adobe’s app for the same price. Anytime a developer tries to trick you into downloading an app by advertising it as ‘free’, you have no idea what else is in the code.
No rotate without paying
by Riverbend Michigan on 2021/11/18 00:20
All I want to do is rotate a pdf i was sent so that I can read it, I don’t want any of the other editing stuff. This one won’t allow rotating without paying.

Subscription like every other horrible app
by Mimi Rosario on 2021/11/16 15:49
Moving to subscription when your software is not a ”living” type of application is just greedy business. This model will not sustain itself, just so you know. Whoop is paying for it, Oura is going to pay for it (give it time), sleep tracking apps pay for it, people routinely criticize Google-Fitbit for this and they have an awesome free option! I didn’t even know editing software developers thought they COULD be in the same boat as the health and fitness industry. This is not a wellness app. Keeping up with the latest science-based discoveries for your health is worth paying for. This is not a premium fitness app. Better coaches and access to specific people is worth paying for. This is not a food delivery service. Removing a large and often frustrating experience out of the average person’s life is worth paying for (not to mention someone is doing the shopping for you). This isn’t even an Amazon type of app. The deals and quick shipping are worth paying for. THIS IS A PDF VIEWER/EDITOR SOFTWARE APP. What is your justification for this change other than “everyone else is doing it”, devs? I want an actual answer, not some generic “sorry, but this model is our future”. What is THE CUSTOMER getting out of this change (the users, not you)?
Really good app
by Smokie Budding on 2021/11/15 05:18
I’ve been using this for about a month now and I’m loving the flexibility of the features. They all work well and are easy to get a grasp of relatively quickly. The one thing I’d like to see in a future upgrade is for it to recognize (and add) form fields. (If it can add form fields for text already I apologize. I haven’t found it) I think that would make it perfect. 11/14/21: Recently there has been bugs that have made annotating documents impossible. I use this app for work and school so annotation is important to me. The first issue I’m having is that there is a refresh cycle that erases edits you’ve made to your document. For example, if you’ve highlighted text or written notes in your document the screen will ‘jump’ slightly and then erase your notes and highlights. Of course, this is extremely frustrating and makes the app unusable for those purposes which is disappointing. Secondly, there is no ‘save’ selection, only ‘save copy.’ Why this is I’m not sure, but it would seem like something basic to have in the options list. I shouldn’t have to search for how to save my document without having to create a secondary copy. The option may exist, but if users can’t find it in the place they expect it then its a shortcoming of the UI design and should be corrected. Now I have to use Liquid Text to make notes, which is my secondary option of choice. Hopefully these issues will be addressed in future updates.
Make me pay for features I already paid for
by mcgurme on 2021/11/15 03:29
I used to love this app as a long-time PAID user, but I don’t need to use it frequently; perhaps 1-4 times per year. So today was one of the days where I needed to use it to do a slight edit on a PDF. Lo and behold, for me to use the editing functions I’m being prompted for a subscription. WHAT!? Features that I previously paid for are now part of a subscription? No way. As an early adopter, I helped fund their development. Now they treat the early users like this by REMOVING features and making us re-pay to have them? I get it that to stay alive many developers are going to subscription-based. In principle that’s okay - as long as you don’t dump on people who bought under a different model. Other organizations did this right. They didn’t force the “downgrade” on their users by providing this hidden “upgrade” (downgrade) of an existing app, with no possibility of going back to the full-featured version. Instead, other organizations created a new and distinct app for the subscription version, and simply stopped supporting the old one after a while. That was fair. This is not. But anyway, I don’t use it enough to pay $50/year even if I were tempted to give you more money, which I’m not. I’ll find another option!
Corrupted Files & docs Marked Favorites Gone!
by Dulce CaraBella on 2021/11/14 19:44
Too many Corrupted Files & now years worth of documents marked ‘Favorites’ are unmarked & gone. This app is absolutely untrustworthy. I’m so sick of this app crashing right when I’m working on important documents that need to be sent within a certain time making me late. Sadly, even though I use to love this app, it has been giving me problems for over a year. I have given it over a years chance and it still crashes often, it still loses my files or deletes them. I’m tired. I hope things get better before I find a better app.
Nope!
by dotcomjunkie on 2021/11/13 00:28
Confusing UI with a subscription model. All I wanted to do was compress a PDF. I used the free trial to explore the app and after 10 minutes of looking in the app options could not figure out where this option was (even after reading the manual provided). So I cancelled the free trial and found another app (free) and had my file compressed about 60 seconds later. I agree with many other reviewers. Stop with the subscription madness and offer a purchase option.
Moving password feature to Pro is very disappointing
by Onestartogo on 2021/11/12 21:04
EDIT: Thank you to Readdle for responding to my review with information. HIGHLY APPRECIATED. They are correct in that to access the password protect file feature, even in the non-Pro version, you would do so from within the individual file rather than from the file navigation view as I had assumed would be consistent. I missed this. To comment on the non-Pro version of the app overall, I think it’s fantastic, believe it will easily handle day to day PDF needs of most users, and I wholeheartedly recommend it. Updated review from 1 stars >> 5 stars. ORIGINAL: The app was able to password protect files previously. After a recent update, it became a Pro feature, apparently. Taking a previously included feature and moving it behind an additional paywall is incredibly disappointing to say the least. The review is not for features included, but for practices of the company. Password protecting is not a “Pro” feature. It should remain a standard feature as our digital information is increasingly at risk. Pretty shameful stance.
Saving issues
by retaredyouare on 2021/11/10 03:33
I don’t like the fact that you have to save a copy first before you can share a open document! To many extra steps when where out in the field using “Your App”!

NO OCR ability . Useless for me
by ginasean on 2021/11/08 01:28
I thought this PDF tool would import a NON OCR’d document and add OCR to it - but it won’t. So I won’t be keeping it beyond the trial. You guys need to add a feature that will add OCR to a PDF that is scanned w/out OCR in it.

Another Subscription
by AppleFanTara on 2021/11/03 19:08
This app is useless without paying, and it’s a subscription. I absolutely WILL NOT use software subscriptions. I don’t want to end up paying hundreds of dollars throughout a lifetime of use for one piece of software, and I highly encourage everyone else to REFUSE to do business with companies that use this model. It’s pure greed. Support companies like Affinity and Procreate that charge a reasonable one-time fee for their software. I would even be willing to occasionally pay for updates from these companies to ensure they stay in business, but I will not be forced into subscriptions, especially for software I’d only use on occasion. I couldn’t even add one page to the existing document I had without paying. Seriously? I have to do the trial just to add one page? Come on.
Updates take away editing power
by Oranges are delish on 2021/11/03 16:49
I loved this app during college for highlighting and annotating articles for my dissertation. I even went out of my way to purchase this app when before I had it for free. I now use it to store patterns mark my knitting progress. However, I am no longer able to mark and annotate my files because there’s now a “pro” version I need to buy in order to do what I’ve been able to do in the past? It seems like a rip off to me. Like, why would you downgrade a customer who purchased the app years ago? I don’t get it.
Won’t save
by OutToLaunch on 2021/11/03 14:47
After filling out complex employment pdf forms.. none of the info I painstakingly entered is saved.. once I go back to check.. it’s all gone.. all the data I entered.. and EVERY time I redo it.. it’s gone again.. I literally can’t fill out these forms with this app. After 4 times, I give up. I used to love this App..
I wish I could save Favorites..
by DeaconChuck on 2021/10/31 17:33
I need to repeatedly access a set of folders in cloud storage, which is what "Favorites" are for, right? Not right, because the app forgets about all of them every few hours.
Great support!
by Sage.N. on 2021/10/31 12:47
Readdle support team is great. I reached out after updating to IOS 15 and shared an issue I was having within my pdf file not working properly within PDF Expert any more. Karina was quick to respond and helped by gathering the information needed and sending it to the engineers to resolve. Couldn’t be happier with the experience and quick resolve. Keep up the good work!!!
The Reason IPad can be used as a business device
by the griz 1 on 2021/10/30 14:46
A lot of people in reviews complain about the price, but for the functionality it performs it is much less expensive than something like BlueBeam or Acrobat. As someone who is constantly viewing contracts, drawings, legal documents PDF expert, my iPad and pencil is much more efficient to make my comments and markup than acrobat on a PC. It’s simple and to the point. Any business owner who spends a lot of time in PDFs dealing with contracts and legal will appreciate that you can get work done on your tablet.
needs improvement
by 0x0anon0x0 on 2021/10/29 12:44
overall i’m happy with this app. however, i don’t believe we should have to have a premium membership just to insert pages in our documents. that should already be a standard feature. making these things premium doesn’t make people want to pay for it, it just annoys them into finding other apps to use. also, there is no palm rejection when writing with a stylus. i’m using the apple pencil 2, which naturally has palm rejection that works with all my other apps. but for some reason, this app doesn’t let me have my hand resting on the screen while i annotate documents. it keeps zooming in and out whenever i try. and sometimes when i write with the variable ink, random white dots appear on on the words i’ve written like they have holes in them. it’s strange.

Normally, a great app but … having iPad OS 15 problem with PageFlip Firefly
by BLSKHou on 2021/10/28 11:14
In recent years, this app has been hugely important and effective for me as a PDF reader and editor. Money well spent! Also, I have enjoyed its easy integration with other highly effective Readdle apps (e.g., Scanner Pro, PDF Converter). After my iPad took the OS update from 14.8 to 15.0.2, my PageFlip Firefly device no longer worked with PDF Expert, but it turned out to be very temporary, as there was a PDF Expert update waiting to be installed, and it resolved the issue.
Customer support needed
by McStumplin on 2021/10/27 00:55
I accidentally purchased the reoccurring 1 year charge, and wanted to instead purchase the monthly one. I’m trying to get into contact with customer service, but there doesn’t appear to be any links working under their ‘Service’ tab. The app itself is great, I just wish they had better customer support.
Number 1 pdf app
by BakILI on 2021/10/27 00:20
I have this app on my mac and also decided to get it for my iPad. The only downside is that on iOS it is only a subscription based, which isn’t cheap. That is why I’m giving it 4 stars here.
Read Aloud is Awful!
by Reeeza on 2021/10/26 15:57
I have been using this app for years. I replaced with Acrobat which has limited functionality and expensive. The noticeable problem which sits there for while is the awful voices it provides in read aloud part, yes, exactly reminds me the voices of windows 95 machine like read the text voice! For example, for me, deploying Aaron, US english voice is realy disturbing! Do you really can tolerate this voice for yourself for just minutes, compare to Siri1?! Guys, why don't you able to fix this by allowing to use the iPad’s new Siri voices that are more natural? Please solve this issue as lots of app users like to use the read aloud functionality making the time efficient for the students, learners or those use it on the go. PLEASE! Eskandari at me dot com!
Please improve the note mark arrangements
by nash suns on 2021/10/26 03:41
Good app, but please improve the note mark arrangements. The note mark will cover the text if more than one note are written and marked down. You can turn the note symbols into small number ones as superscripts or subscripts in papers. Thank you.

by Ed1967ghyytt on 2021/10/25 00:23

by CajunRod on 2021/10/24 23:20
Although I pay $49 per year for PDF Expert Pro, I cannot use the pro version but still the PDF Expert app is great except for one thing… one BIG missing item… No Watermarking and although I have actually had a conversation with Readdle a couple years ago about the watermarking ability, I was told it would be including in about two to three months, but this was almost two years ago!

Disappointed Subscription model
by JoSuEtrd on 2021/10/23 13:11
I use this app once a year in order to fill a document ONCE a year. I bought the best app for that purpose. Thanks to developers for the great idea of subscription model on that kind of app, that shows you are desperate for money. I prefer pay a price for the whole thing once like before (4,5,6,ect) no $49.99 a year that’s insane.

Good app, major bug
by AdamE11 on 2021/10/22 04:13
I love this app and am only giving it three stars because it renders the app completely useless to me. When searching large files, the highlighted search fields that match the search usually show some weird encryption rather than the word. “Sy$&87” rather than sender and so on.

Before last update to software it was a 5 star
by Ocaoivorew on 2021/10/21 16:50
Now every app has more bloatwear and is a pita to use. I need this for my heart tracing from the watch, which has never been right. I’m thinking Apple is going downhill They ruined a perfectly useful and easy to use app with the last update. I’ll have to use my PC to order things from the internet now because I can’t get the PDF into folders anymore and it’s a mess trying to dig through every thing saved . I’ll offload everything to my computer and get rid of it

No redo button, what a joke
by parmoni on 2021/10/20 01:08
[UPDATE: redo button found, but no option to drag it onto toolbar for quicker access, not good UI/UX] So it actually happens quite frequently when i opt to fast tap the undo button to undo a series of mistakes, but then i accidentally undo one too many times, and when there’s dozens of edits all over the place, I’m left wondering which of my important edits accidentally got deleted from over undo-ing. A redo button would solve this. How can you call yourself a document editor without one of the most basic of doc editing features? 🤦🏽‍♂️ 🤦🏽‍♂️ Tell me one other doc editor that also lacks this, and I’ll update my one-star rating to two stars. Add the redo feature, and I’ll five-star PDF Expert all day every day.

Crashes every 10 seconds
by N&MG on 2021/10/19 02:33
I used to love the app for highlighting PDFs from my google drive. Since a week or so, assuming with recent updates, the app crashes every 10 seconds. My 4 year old tries to “color” fishes on the PDF and the app gives up on her before she can even finish up fish’s face. Also, why can’t I “save” (overwrite existing) the PDF on google drive? The only option now is to save a copy, while previously I was able to overwrite and save existing PDF. Minor issue though, compared to crashes every 10 seconds which has made the app virtually unusable now.
Great App - Had issue and they resolved it.
by SublimePineapple on 2021/10/18 01:07
Their tech support jumped right on a big issue I was having that was causing me loss of business, they got it resolved in a reasonable amount of time and everything is work fine again. by Ks.Euro on 2021/10/09 17:19
All around excellent app for dealing with PDFs. The only issue I have is that the app crashes EVERY single time I try to tab between fields using an external keyboard — doesn't matter the document. Had to retrain myself to stay away from the tab key whenever I’m in the app. I’ll revise this review to 5-stars if/when this issue gets fixed.

It has been months since I started using this app and it still has the same issue: it freezes and/or flashes the pages frequently if they are larger than a few pages. It is so frustrating that none of the updates fixed it. PDF Expert is my favorite app on my MB Pro but it is a complete disaster in iPad Pro.

Perfect pdf companion
Horrible…don’t waste your time and money
by alimjomar on 2021/10/06 20:36
I tried to edit a text address on a pdf form. The edit feature gives you a blue rectangular box that is completely blank. The app does not give you the feature to see what in the heck you’re trying to edit. I say it is not worth the time nor the $49.99 a year subscription fee. Stay away from this miserable app.
Change of Business
by BlueWatersSilverJaw on 2021/10/06 12:56
Bought the paid iPad app some time ago and am now being forced to pay an additional 50 USD/yr. Will likely move away from Readdle products as I want cross platform apps and this will start to complicate things, unnecessarily. Used to be a solid app for me, though.
An app that creates more problems than solutions
by Jaybird909 on 2021/10/04 20:13
I have wasted hours on this app trying to unf*#k the myriad ways in which PDF Expert creates unnecessary cells/windows and inexplicably changes the font and spacing while entering text. Do not use this app. It isn’t worth the aggravation. To the developers: this app needs to be removed from app stores and completely overhauled. It is fundamentally flawed and not ready for prime time. Shame on you.

Good but annoying iPad mini issues
by chriseux on 2021/10/02 03:52
The toolbar and annotation tools completely disappear: -every time you switch from an open pdf in this app to another app and come back; -every time you lock the screen with an open pdf and unlock the screen again. The only way to get back the toolbar is to force quit the app and restart it. Very annoying. I’m using the latest 2021 iPad mini with 8.3” screen.
Search is bugged

Great app but some major annoyances
by Literroy on 2021/09/30 18:13
Obviously it’s the best PDF app on iPad, as everyone says. But there are three things that annoy me on literally a daily basis. 1) Instead of iOS’s native “Look Up” feature, it uses “Define.” That means, if I encounter a term that’s not in the dictionary that I want to look up, such as a proper name, the fastest way to do that is to hit define, have it tell me that it’s not in the dictionary, then click Search Web. The “Look Up” feature would save all that work. This might be a me thing, but in my use case for the app, I encounter this issue every single day. I don’t know if there’s a technical barrier to implementing it, but I know other apps use it so I’m assuming not. The worst part is, the web search then opens in Safari, kicking you out of the app, which brings me to… 2) The app really should use (or have an option to use) Safari View Controller instead of kicking you to Safari, not just when looking up terms, but whenever you click URLs. It’s very disruptive to my workflow to have to leave the app just to look up something really quickly. I know there are ways around that (having Safari in Slide Over mode for example), but wouldn’t it be way easier to just use Safari View Controller? It’s been around for years and years at this point. Or at least make SVC an option as I know some people probably prefer it the way it is. 3) The app hides a VERY basic functionality, marking certain annotation tools as your favorites and displaying them readily, behind a VERY expensive subscription paywall. I’m fine with the developers making money, but this is a pretty basic functionality to hide behind a “pro” label. Since I don’t need any of the other Pro features of the app, I can’t justify spending that much money on what would really amount, for me, to just this one basic thing. Please consider moving that to the free version, or at least making it a small, one-time IAP, especially since it’s not the kind of tool that requires ongoing maintenance costs or server time and it doesn’t really fit in logically with the rest of the features that are behind the subscription paywall. Despite these annoyances, I still use PDF Expert every day. It’s better than anything else I’ve tried at its core job of reading and annotating PDFs. I just hope that being the best inspires them to be even better to improve the user experience rather than letting the app stagnate, like so many other apps do.
Subscription based
by EvilerMasterDog on 2021/09/29 23:39
Please developers, offer an option to pay for the software outright, and not in a subscription. I do not want to have to pay for this every year, and will instead be using different software to edit my files. Very disappointing.
Might go-to but still missing a significant feature.
by gamemasterbob on 2021/09/29 21:50
PDF expert is my go to. I consider it the best PDF reader for iPad. My complaint is that if I leave PDF expert and go to another program or webpage, when I come back I have to re-select the tool bar in my tool I was using. There is no way to set a default tools so that it’s set when the program is focused again. Maybe this is in the $49.99 yearly subscription. Really, $50? But as it stands I’ll keep it as it is and maybe I’ll find another program that does with this does and doesn’t make me continually re-click to select my tool every time I come back. It really does annoy me. Otherwise this is a stable, very useful tool.
Opinion From a Digital Note Taker
by J15ME on 2021/09/29 15:43
Everything within the app first appeared similar to Good Notes, however adding links to the web is a much needed feature, and creating an outline for exams is essential to distill information from a pdf or powerpoint.
Original purchase nonfunctional
by jpr8 on 2021/09/28 16:47
I purchased pdf expert a while ago, but haven’t used it much since the basic functionality iOS and iPadOS have gotten so good. Today I tried to use the redact feature on my iPad with PDF Expert and all I kept getting was a pop up to try then buy PDF Expert Pro for $49.99 a year. Apparently the non-pro app no longer does anything useful. I’m now deleting the app I’ve had for years. So I’m off to my air to redact. I can’t wait for Apple to bring over redact feature from Mac.
This is the Ultimate
by Alailima on 2021/09/28 07:48
I have tried many pdf programs, but this is absolutely the best. This program is everything it claims to be, and it is so cheap it is unbelievable. It has the ability to add pictures, charts, diagrams, etc I can instantly create an invoice and sign it. People are often amazed at the contracts and invoices I can instantly create and have both of us sign - right on my iPhone. I can take a picture of a multi-page form and PDF Expert will turn it into a pdf that I can fill-in and print or return to the sender. Anytime I delete a file, it saves it to a “recently deleted” folder where I can retrieve the file. Adobe (costing hundreds of dollars) created PDF, but PDF Expert brought it a quantum level higher. I have used this program for many years to run our business, and I have yet to find a deficiency in it.
Wonky Update

updated presentation mode is terrible
by therealian69420 on 2021/09/23 14:10
The old presentation mode was great — I saw the regular screen with all the various options, while people seeing my screen just saw the slides. All I want is to go back to the old version, but as usual that’s impossible.

Converted to a Subscription service after I Paid $80 and used twice
by ypetrik on 2021/09/22 02:27
Edit: so just to be clear… According to the developer the app for the Mac did not change to subscription? That was a one time purchase that remained? The iPad only version is a subscription? If so that explains it but honestly I find it ridiculous that I have to pay three times to get the app across all three of my platforms. I would even pay a one time fee but not doing the subscription. Adobe acrobat pro is a monthly fee and you get it across all the different devices. Why would I pay $80 for the Mac version and then monthly subscription for the iPad version and then he knows what you’re demanding for the iPhone version. Just like the title says. I paid $80 for this app which is already quite a lot of money and how do use that maybe twice. Every now and then I need to merge or split PDF documents. Very light works. I was told this is the best app. I came back to it to do some PDF editing and it’s telling me I need to pay $50 a year. I already did a one time purchase of $80. Completely dishonest and unfair business practices. At least grandfather and the people that already purchased the app for a one time price or credit them the $80 they spent towards a subscription. Now you’re expecting you to pay 50 bucks a year? So I paid $80 to use the app twice?
Easier to access than Acrobat
by Miles From Now on 2021/09/21 23:37

This app is really great!!! Easy to use. Will do many things with it. I'm amaze of the smooth and precise it is. I use it every day. I really love the way it works. Hope they don't make the error of make an update and crap the app. (Like many others) Very satisfy. Update After 2 or 3 years of using it, I keep amazed of everything I can do with it. This App Used to Be The Best PDF Editor By Far….. Not Anymore
by BlackBeemerM3 on 2021/09/21 05:21
I really used to love this app. It was so intuitive and user friendly. I could seamlessly edit any type of PDF with words, pictures, etc. I thought it was well worth the yearly purchase price. That being said, there has been a change to the entire layout and structure of the editor. It has different sections like “edit” and “draw,” which used to be all available depending on the toolbar options you wanted to use. Correct me if I’m wrong, but drawing, Is editing a PDF? You used to be able to long press, and then had the option to insert, draw, or whatever. There wasn’t this sectioned type of layout. I really dislike using it anymore. Especially when I draw something, then go to the text sections and want my drawing to get covered by the text, hence the reason I did the drawing part first, but then it pulls the background to the front and screws up the entire look I’m trying to get. On top of that when I write text, out of nowhere these blue boxes go around my text and the sometimes underlining part of it. It’s really terrible using This app now. And as a 4 year customer, I will be asking for a refund, because it’s such a pain to get the results I want. People want an app that almost seems like it can read your mind, It’s intuitive, even if you’ve never used it you can get an idea of how it’s laid out and it literally becomes second nature. But not anymore. That’s all gone. Maybe it’s just me, but it doesn’t work for me anymore. I have an iPhone 11, running iOS 15 right now. It was the same layout on iOS 14.8x. As far as I can recall, this new layout has been around since the start of 2021. I’m just so annoyed using it at this point that I felt compelled to write a review. The only one I’ve ever deemed worthy spending the time to do so. Please go back to the old layout!
BUYERS BEWARE! NO custom font support!
by Mr.ƒ on 2021/09/20 20:02
iOS 15 is here and still no custom font support! since the apple iOS 14 changes regarding the way it handles custom fonts, which is not complicated or hard to apply! but the dev team behind this app are just lazy and don’t care to do anything regarding bringing custom fonts back!!

I was made aware of PDF Expert recently before the update to version 7, and took a while to decide to make use of it, especially the pro tools, since my needs are those of a college student. I'm very glad I made the choice to acquire the app and its pro features however. Its the only app that actually lets to modify and work with or create pdf documents with all their features (like hyperlinks - which was my key interest for note taking). The app has a simple and hands on interface and works very well for me. My key uses for it are for organizing information ive collected from other sources and class notes, hyperlinking between my notes to improve my studies and learning, as well as, when possible with the pdfs I use, edit the pdf file itself to select elements to keep. While screenshots are wonderful and useful, and incorporating them into note apps are easy and useful, when working with pdfs, being able to use the image quality and format of the pdf books i own allows me to work with the content as is, rather than an image of it, which really appeals to me. I had a few issues with my acquisition with regards to its update to version 7, and through this learned how attentive and thoughtful Readdle is to their user base, including new users. They made me feel like they really wanted me to make the best use of their software and feel like it should have a place in my workflow. I'm grateful to the quick responses and attention to my needs and uses.
Indispensable App & Superior Customer Service!
by BookGirl4Ever on 2018/07/29 17:42
For over 6 years I’ve been using this app & it has been a fantastic experience. There was a learning curve in the beginning but after that I’ve had nothing but positive experiences. Originally I bought PDF Expert to study & archive periodicals but it has become an integral part of my iPad life: keeping all of my scanned bits of paper & recipes organized, filling out online forms, even doing creative projects. And talk about customer service! If only all companies had their finesse! I’ve had to contact them 3 or 4 times with questions & not only do they write back promptly but the tone of the response is thoughtful & friendly. And I don’t know if it was just a coincidence but early on there was only a deep purple highlighter so dark to be almost unusable so I submitted a request for lilac. On the next update lilac was there! Now, of course, there are plenty of color options. Another time I wrote them because I couldn’t figure out how to do something & they wrote me back as if they had nothing better to do than help me. So impressed. With every update PDF Expert only gets better. Bravo to the Readdle team! Congratulations on many excellent products backed by a superior customer experience! Keep up the good work!
love it, BUT
by 93cheshire on 2021/03/03 17:09
I use the pro version of this application on my iPad with an apple pencil. Perfect software and device combination for my court case brief annotations, and digital textbooks for school. Currently providing a rating of 4 stars because I want more custom interface personalizations. for an example a custom color palette that consisted of more colors, like 10-12, palette to be locked and saved on my toolbar instead of changing back to default. Instead of having it layer under more that two clicks (or touches of my pen). Yes I have a half a dozen options now two clicks away. Personally I would prefer a dozen. I do see the favorite tab and that is okay. The annotation feature is my favorite, I enjoy how easy it is to make a paired down outlines for studying. Love the option to have a couple documents up at once. Love the bookmark feature! This is a great tool. Looking forward to more collections of stickers, specifically stickers that I can insert text into. Please take me back to 90s Word graphics. Another factor, wish this application had the ability to create or edit fillable forms. I was disappointed when I found fillable form creation was not a feature. Very essential during these pandemic times. This application is the primary reason I purchased an iPad. Thank You!
THIS IS THE BEST. BETTER THAN ADOBE
by Sean Kennedy Santos on 2021/04/16 15:43
For years I’ve had nothing but issues with Adobe, Apple Pages, Word Doc. Nothing would ever work under one umbrella. In two simple words absolutely dysfunctional. This App by PDF Expert allows you every kind of access to exit, create and multitask all PDF & word documents easily and add components you cloud not in other software. There is nothing it cannot do. FORGET ADOBE & stop paying monthly fees & get this all in one APP that will change the way you work. Thank you for creating an App that never fails & performs in a way that leading expectations are met by the standards you’ve given in an APP. Most recently there was a corrupted important document - sent it to support. FIXED within a day & returned. In today’s world it is extremely difficult to have a company give such satisfying customer support. Apple, Google, Microsoft, Adobe- ALL FAIL miserably where READDLE succeed. We are very grateful & wish READDLE as a company much continued success. This is why I left Adobe years ago & switched to READDLE. Product & customer support. It’s the backbone of any customer relationship & READLE recognise this at every turn.
No way to purchase app, can only be ‘rented’ for $50/year
by َٰ on 2020/12/14 14:42
I would gladly pay whatever you feel your software to be worth to own it. However, this “subscription” model where you are essentially only renting out the app, is exceedingly unfair with the customer. I’ve been using Goodreader, for example, for years and years. By 5 years, your app has cost 250USD, and by 10 years, 500 dollars. Please add an option to purchase the full version of the app outright, rather than a subscription-only model, to which I, and many like me, would never agree, no matter how good the app itself. Don’t give in to this unfair concept of software as a service, instead of a product, which it is. It’s being pushed currently as it’s more profitable, but exploitative to customers, don’t encourage it. UPDATE-REPLY TO DEVELOPER COMMENT: Thank you for your reply; what I’m requesting is the ability to purchase the app outright and permanently, for whatever it’s price is, and NOT to purchase a subscription in order to be able to use it, no matter how flexible. My request is for a purchase option, whereas you currently only allow subscription-based option, which I, and I imagine many like me, would never do, although I would be willing to pay a considerable amount to purchase the app, it’s currently not an option for any amount. A “more flexible” subscription plan doesn’t help, as I will not purchase a subscription.

Do everything PDF application for iOS
by BGH40 on 2018/09/13 15:17
Essential application for me. I get several faxes a week (via eFax) these are PDF files and I can send directly to PDF expert, mark them, physically sign them (on screen) and re fax. I get PDF reports that I need to fill out, and this application makes it easy. Type or draw on the PDF document, then email the edited copy. It allows me to move pages in a PDF document (sometimes page 1 needs to be page 3 - easy to move). I can rotate pages, delete or add pages. I have merged up to 4 PDF documents into one new document. Removed, edited and sorted pages. Delete pages you don’t need. I can fill out PDF forms. (Have not made a form that has to be filled out - never had the need, so I can’t comment on this capability). I can fill out any form by entering text on the appropriate line even if it was not originally meant to be filled out online. [NOTE: I am a real user and have never been contacted by Readdle. I don’t rate many applications, but this one has been so useful to me, I wan’t others to use it so Readdle will continue to support this excellent program.]

I have used this program for years and own it for both my computer and my iPad. They came out with a professional version and now all the functions that I had in the ones that I bought are gone. I know that I had them because I used one of them every day to redact information on PDFs. I sent information into the company saying that after the professional version came out I lost the ability to do redactions. The function still works on the computer version that I bought but not on the iOS version to get that I must upgrade to the new professional version. If you buy this program be aware you may be required to upgrade to get features that you use every day. I sent him proof of purchase and they still don’t have an answer for me they keep telling me that there is a version for iOS and there’s a version for windows operating systems. I Purchased for both and I know that already my only question is why didn’t the way up teacher that I already owned.
Re-paying for features we already purchased once
by HollyOllyOlly on 2019/10/17 05:30
When I originally purchased this app before the newest updates (downgrades, for those of us who originally paid money for the app, which suddenly lost all capability, unless we were willing to fork over an additional $50!) I would have said it was a great app. I work as a paralegal, and this app used to be awesome for on-the-go creating/editing of all the court documents we work with which must be submitted as pdfs. I especially used to love the signature feature, as it meant I sometimes no longer even had to travel in order to get client signatures for continuance forms. I was so disappointed to discover, as of a couple days ago, that my paid for, super awesome app no longer provided me access to any of the useful features I had come to love. Apparently if I wanted to continue using the app as I had for the past year, I was now expected to pay an additional $50. I’ve never had a company pull such a bait and switch, and I’m incredibly disappointed at how transparent a money grab this ploy is. Shame on you guys, this app used to be a great product and a fair price, but I’m not going to keep repaying for things that I, the consumer, was lead to believe would be a one time purchase to unlock price. Bummed!
Another Subscription
by sensimiola on 2021/03/12 07:10
Almost every app from the worthwhile app to even the piss-poor one's require subscriptions in order to use them. It's enough to make you go bankrupt! This has gotten way out of hand, and is simply not fair to the consumer. Many apps even conceal costs and info regarding purchases required to get anything of value from an app. Then, there is of course, the text which lays out "the terms". Most average people cannot understand or even read the content which is written in profuse legalese. I've shown some of these "terms" documents to attorneys, and even some of them were scratching their heads. In reality, the way these things are constructed, it would probably be wise to retain an attorney just to review these terms before you agree to use any application. Some of the lawyers I spoke with said they'd never agree to having their clients sign on to any number of apps with these terms. That is especially true with regard to issues of privacy which always seem to appear in the very smallest of print. While this app does look very capable and would be a welcome addition, you add up the costs of 10, 20 or 30 subscriptions, you suddenly realize why you're running a deficit at bill time. Offer a purchase option for people!
Good, but sometimes freezes
by MinikinPawWalker on 2020/09/19 14:18
This app is great with the Ipad Pro 2020. I downloaded it for school so that I could take notes in my online readings for class and research. I have the Apple Pencil 2 and smart keyboard, which work very well with this app. I love that this app also automatically syncs with my Google Drive account. I store all my class files and online articles I’ve researched in my Drive. I can easily access the PDFs stored in my Drive through this app to read and take notes. Then, the PDF I took notes on automatically updates in my Drive. It cuts out a few extra steps and keeps things organized. There’s no extra downloads or transferring files between apps needed! The only thing I would complain about is that every once in awhile, the app freezes. I always have a few files open at once, so I don’t typically just click on a different file and it unfreezes. I am willing to take an occasional freeze from time to time in exchange for this app’s efficiency.
Correcting myself — I was wrong and tech support was excellent
by Hokietrax on 2020/12/26 22:27
Frustrating experience outlined below; my tone was not nice. When I reached out direct to Readdle, it turned out even though i only actively installed the app on the iPad, the app was on both iphone and ipad, thus I couldn’t delete the PDF Expert folder until app was deleted on both devices. Readdle support was professional, and responded in a reasonable time. They were so good and pleasant the review goes from 1* to an easy 5*. Maybe the app wasn’t for me for now, but customer support that listens is worth a great rating. I. Was. Wrong. Thank you Readdle. ==== Old review ==== When I tried out the app, everything worked okay, but it just wasn’t what I was looking for. It created a folder for PDF Expert files in my iCloud folder, which created one in my iCloud for Windows. I uninstalled the app from the iPad, and removed the file and folder from the iPad just fine...BUT THE PDF EXPERT FOLDER CANNOT BE REMOVED FROM WINDOWS. I have tried a number of ways to change the folder’s Read-Only permissions on Windows in order to remove it (it’s empty). I CANNOT change permissions (access denied) via command prompt, Windows powershell, the GUI, or anything. Don’t point at Windows as the problem—nothing else installs a read-only directory other than PDF Expert. Not LiquidText, not the Downloads folder, just this one. Wretched programming on the iCloud synchronization.

While this has always been the best pdf app for school textbooks, the new update has ruined what set it apart from competitors in terms of workflow. It used to have all the tools in one toolbar with four customizable pens/highlighters so you could quickly switch between different colors and pens. Now the most useful tools are scattered between different toolbars and there is only one pen and one highlighter in the toolbar. And instead of using a long-press to customize your tools like in the previous versions, you must now tap extra times to open an expandable toolbar, thereby adding a step to the process. This is a serious step back as it negates the strengths of a tablet and diminishes efficiency. It seems like a confused philosophy that prioritizes aesthetics over functionality. And now if you want the same toolbar that was in the previous version, you will have to pay for the “pro features” in order to access the customizable “favorites” toolbar. So while the update description states that it only adds to functionality of the previous version and doesn’t take away anything, this is simply untrue (in my case, at any rate).
They expect you to pay 50 dollars A YEAR.
by Aregey2 on 2020/07/21 01:42
Are you kidding me? I’m going to sink hundreds of dollars into this? No way. One time would be bad enough but that adds up quick to hundreds of dollars, and when you inevitably cancel what are you left with... nothing. This subscription model trash has gotten completely out of hand and is completely unacceptable in my opinion. Either charge a big one time fee up front or just admit you’re a bunch of con artists on the tin. Because that’s all this subscription crap is, an extortionist con job if you ask me. I don’t like it. It just gets under my skin and reeks and stinks of the worst kind of greedy nonsense, it’s my pet peeve and it’s why I left Photoshop. If it was a good deal that would be one thing but dude it’s a PDF editor. I paid 40 bucks for 3 top notch Affinity apps in one go. I would be using much more colorful language about this “subscription pricing model” newspeak (imagine an expletive or several of your choosing) but I guess I can’t do that. Just fill in the blanks. Don’t listen to their customer service crap, absolutely nobody likes this behavior. It’s not an issue, it’s greedy corporate money grubbing, keep your money out of their hands.
Get it
by Gus2259 on 2018/12/30 15:01
I’m frugal when it comes to buying apps. Ok, I’m a cheapskate. Why should I pay for a pdf editor with so many free ones out there? Well, if all you do is open and email pdfs’s then you don’t need this app. If you do more than that, anything more, then this is well worth it. This apps features are already listed so I won’t repeat them. I didn’t see the page combining and removal feature listed which is exactly what I needed. This app has that. So for that alone I bought it. I do historical research and use a lot of PDFs. This apps organizational abilities for not just combining pages but copying, pasting, removing or adding photos and text is outstanding. Of course it has the features like the other editors have but none of the others have all the features this app has. It’s intuitiveness is excellent. It makes what I do so much better and easier that I’m honestly happy I paid for it. And that’s coming from a Scrooge😳
Honestly, the best PDF reader ever!
by Cenon415 on 2021/04/18 00:05
For the past couple of months, I have been solely relying on PDF readers for school work since the Pandemic has really taken over. It is very difficult for me to visit my local library for physical books, forcing me to turn towards electronic books instead. I’ve used various PDF readers in the past but have always been very uncomfortable with the limited features they offered until I discovered PDF Expert. This app has every feature I can ever ask for. One BASIC feature that most PDF readers did not have (from my experience) was the ability to change the PDF file into dark mode. The background of each page change into the color black and the fonts to the color white, making it easier to view at night. This feature has greatly improved my health. I no longer suffer from migraines and eye strains. Thank you Readdle! You guys are truly a blessing.
Update is SO BUGGY please fix it or revert it ASAP
by Sarandipityg on 2019/09/10 00:20
I use this app all day every day. And now I’m in a hang up because of its issues. I mark-up pdf documents, and i also am now using a stylus with the iPad Pro. This buggy update is going to cost me my job. It’s caused the pdf to crash the app, and when I emailed it to my old iPad with the non-updated version of the app this new pdf crashed that app too. It’s not a corrupt pdf, it’s corrupt because of this new updates bugs. The marks I put in the pdf using this app literally corrupted the pdf file. Other issues include the page moving, instead of staying still, so it’s not allowing the pen to write or copy. That is frustrating. And often I find that I can’t swipe thru the pages anymore, which makes this app very difficult to be patient with or useful. Considering you now want to charge more money to use this app you better fix it!
Great for Annotating and Highlighting
by The Builder.... on 2021/08/18 14:18
For the past year, I've been using the free version of PDF Expert to annotate PDF documents at work, and I must say that it has proven itself to be reliable and trustworthy in terms of its build quality. Writing digitally is the same as writing on a piece of paper, which is good by me. Although I have not tried out the premium features (as I have no need for them), the free version is great, which shows me that their premium feature should just as good, if not better. Lastly, I definitely like the fact that PDF Expert syncs seamlessly with iCloud, Dropbox and OneDrive, without me having to create a copy of the file on the iPad separately, make edits, then save the edited copy back to the respective cloud source. Again, it's proven itself to be quite reliable, and should be something to consider if you regularly annotate PDFs either personally or professionally.
Great but needs improvement
by yujiewu on 2021/06/15 00:50
1. Now iPads are powerful and we can open many files at the same time, but scrolling over long thin file tabs is a bad way to switch between them... Xodo/ Notability has the option of see these tabs as a pop up window and navigation over there is easier. 2. Gives an option to fix the tools area, to disable the auto-hiding mode. Goodnotes has a fixed tool area and it can be good when auto-hiding is annoying to some people since it can be often triggered accidentally. 3.Double tab to jump from different modes, fit to page, zoomed in, fit to width. I like this part of Goodnotes. 4. A great app but needs improvement and definitely does not justify the yearly subscription price tag so far from my trial period experience. Hyperlink would be a very great tool for me sometimes but I don't like to pay 50 dollars every year when I could find other methods to replace this function to some extent.
Dishonest reviewers
by Sir Chispas on 2019/08/18 01:46
These negative reviews are extremely dishonest. Readdle is an amazing company—always super responsive to its customers. If you upgraded to PRO in a previous version, then you still have the same functionality. Tap restore purchases and stop badmouthing one of the best developers in the App Store. The new subscription is geared toward professionals (read: businesses) and is a bargain compared to an Adobe subscription. Honestly, I prefer Readdle’s UI to Adobe’s hands down. If you’re not a business, then just be grateful for the free updates and keep on freeloading for as long as you can. Software is a service, not a tool. It takes a lot of time and energy to build and maintain. To those users who deleted the app because they can’t have 15 colors of highlighters or whatever— good luck finding an app that can even nips at the heels of PDF Expert in terms of functionality.
Unparalleled Excellence!
by e-BookReader on 2018/11/02 18:27
If you are looking for a PDF editor / file manager and more, you will not find one that equals or surpasses the excellence of this app. I have been using iOS pdf apps for years and I tried PDF Expert when it first hit the App Store. At that time, it was good, but not the best. But I continued to follow the progress of the development team over the years, and about 18 months ago they reached the top of the performance and functionality charts in my estimation. I have a PDF library of around 4,000 volumes, and I use this app exclusively to manage and view those files. (I also recently used it to proofread and mark up a PhD dissertation for a colleague, and the annotation tools couldn’t have been better designed.) And there is more to come as the development team continues to listen to users (and respond to their emails!) and add more functionality. Buy it now before the price goes up to what it is worth!
This app is amazing!!!
by TopWarmachine on 2018/12/13 15:40
For many years I used the Good Reader app, but since the app has been abandoned with no update in sight, I made the switch to PDF Expert. I do not regret this switch in the least. While PDF Expert does crash sometimes, the development team has put out numerous updates in an effort to increase overall stability. The ability to truly edit PDFs is an awesome feature as well, something that GoodReader never implemented. The customer service and communication with this company has been great as well. This is a great change from the lies and empty promises from the GoodReader development team in the rare event they actually will respond to any emails. From now on, I will be recommending PDF Expert to everyone I know instead of GoodReader. For those of you still on the fence about which app to purchase you will not regret getting PDF Expert.
This is a great app
by kmc121084 on 2020/01/09 14:08
I use this app for my lectures in vet school (which move extremely quickly, as you could imagine). The only drawbacks I have had involve the overall flexibility in functionality. I would, for example, like to be able to make certain parts of the text box bold, italicized, different font sizes, for emphasis of certain topics. This is only available in the sticky notes part. I would also find it useful to be able to have a blank sheet on one side, as one would use for Cornell notes. My lecture slides do not always have a lot of free room - I understand this is not the fault of the app, just a suggestion for people with PDFs that are a bit crowded, but would still like annotations side-by-side, or overhanging on the side, to be able keep everything in view as much as possible. Otherwise, this is the ONLY app I use for my slides as I am the most satisfied with its functions and general ease of use.
Lost features
by Baraa Modallal on 2019/10/23 13:20
This is undoubtedly the best pdf app out there, too bad that recent update made it go backwards instead of forwards. First of all, The option of three pencils was very efficient and quick, as well as the “zoom in pencil” function, which is now buried deep inside the color selector of the only available pencil, which is nothing but a slowdown. As i used to have multiple colored and sized pencils ready to go, now i have to change it every single time. Secondly, ive had this app for about 2 years, ive had about 1000 books inside of it, but it’s all gone after the update, I can’t seem to be able to find it anywhere after the lastest update, even though they’re still taking space in my ipad “3.3gb is the storage taken by this app” which means they’re still there somewhere, i just can’t seem to find them anywhere. Luckily I could re-download those books, but i just can’t get over the fact that all my highlights are gone now.
Fantastic 😎👍🏻
by DudemanLA on 2020/12/12 03:53
This app is really great. I use this app a lot to fill out forms and more With this app, I don’t have to print it out, then write with a pen (like an animal) and then scan it. It’s actually fun to fill out forms on the iPhone. I’ll have to try it out on my new iPAd air 4. It is really full featured. I also edit text, annotate, etc. I love how it perfectly can highlight text. I filled out a form today and added a signature, put check marks, added text and more. There is a PDF inside the app that gives examples and shows how to use it but on their website there’s also some tutorial videos and instructional videos that are very helpful. I highly recommend this. I upgraded to the pro version for the yearly subscription and I’m very happy I did. it’s actually kind of fun to use this program on the iPhone 11 Pro Max although I’m sure it’s even better on the iPad Update: after using this app for several months now I can honestly say it’s with the subscription price. I have used this to edit PDFs and fill out important forms and sign them right on my iPhone. I had to email a page on a PDF documents that had 30 pages but only needed to send one page. With this app I was able to save just one of the pages and save it as a new document.
Grad Student
by Karneson0321 on 2018/10/17 00:32
Almost all my classmates use Notability, which I had and used for the first part of my program. I switched to this app, and have fallen in love. It allows me to organize my files multiple folders deep and they stay in my iCloud Drive which allows me to access my notes on any computer since it’s just saved as a PDF. It allows you to select to highlight the text vs. just using the highlighter so my notes look much neater. You Can also strike through and underline the text. You still have the ability to hand write notes and such on top of just doing the changes to the text. It gives ability to view the outline format, and if you purchase the upgrade you can build the outline (which has been a lifesaver for 120 slide class PowerPoints), also with the upgrade you can also make links within the text.
Don’t Update to Version 7!
by Zubbit on 2019/08/16 02:39
If you have version 6 beware, the version 7 upgrades are minimal but what you lose in simplicity for your daily annotations and edits is significant: Annotations: In version 7, you lose most of your color presets for highlights/underlines/drawing (you only get to keep 5 color presets in version 7, while in version 6 you had about 15 color presets). In version 7 you’ll have to open a color wheel button to manually select a color every time you want to use something other than those 5 colors (this takes 3-4 clicks every time you want a new color, which quickly becomes frustrating if you use the app for what it was designed for: significant PDF annotating). Or, you can pay $45 per year if you want to “favorite” certain tools for quicker access in version 7. Edits: In version 6, you could buy PDF editing for a one-time $10 fee, but in version 7 you will have to shell out $45 recurring per year to get PDF editing (unless you were smart enough to buy it in version 6, in which case it comes with you to version 7). It’s not all bad, version 7 makes it a bit easier to use the search and bookmark/outline features. However, I have found the “outline” feature to be a bit buggy in version 7 when adding new chapters to the overall outline. It seems to insert them in strange spots, rather than keeping the outline automatically organized by page number as version 6 did.
Good, mostly.
by Foolio on 2019/06/06 00:54
Pretty good pdf editor overall, but some issues. Big one for me - for date fields it only allows their custom date-picker keyboard UI, but the output doesn’t seem to be compatible with that space in the pdf I’m trying to fill, and it doesn’t let you over-ride the date-picker keyboard for a standard keyboard....incredibly frustrating, please fix! Furthermore, it seems there’s an issue in both this app and documents app while editing a pdf field that if it says ‘only enter spaces, letters, etc’, and the modal dialog for this pops up, you can’t then dismiss it without force quitting the app. Incredibly annoying and frustrating. Also, the file structure of the various readdle apps with relation to your device and iCloud is frustrating, not very convenient to use them together even bough I’ve paid for every single in app purchase and every one of their apps.
One little suggestion
by 枫263 on 2021/05/02 22:39
Very great app. I use it to read book and papers all the time. Very nice annotation tools. A little suggestion: It would be very nice if there could be a function to disable the drag bar on the right-hand side. I usually use the right hand to scroll the page when reading. Very often touched the scroll bar by accident, and the page suddenly jump to somewhere. It is very bad experience because it would break the thought process and take me time to get back to the current page. Also it would be nice to remove the “dead zone” on top of the page where if you touch it by accident, it jumps directly to the starting of document. I actually can think of any practical usage of this function, other than disrupt the reading.
Long time user upgrading from version 6
by Tariqaa2001 on 2019/10/03 12:32
I’m a long time user who purchased the full app capabilities along time ago and i use this app on a daily basis & i wouldn't know what to do without it, i held on upgrading to the new version for a while until things settled down because i use this app for my studying and i cannot afford any mistakes. Version 7 is great Upgrading is alone worth it just for the dark mode Editing tools have changed in position which was annoying the first few days but you get used to it and its fine now, i can’t tell what else is new and if you’re thinking that you’ll miss new things if you stay on ver.6, you’re not missing anything major other than a facelift for the app itself. There is a bit of delay when switching to another app and going back -the pdf is blurry for a couple of seconds- which i hope is a bug As for pdf editing if you purchased the capability before i can confirm that its still in the app without a subscription I don’t know if the subscription strategy will work but honestly i liked buying a new version every couple of years and i was fine with that, but i wouldn't pay 50$/yr, but if there was a cheaper tip jar or lower priced level, i will in-fact purchase the full version if it becomes available on the store
This App is a SCAM !!!
by RickDS_iPad on 2020/01/14 06:25
2 years ago, this developer made my Version 5 pro unusable by forcing everyone to pay $10 to get version 6, then 1 year later, they force you to pay another $10 to get so-called "new" edit tool. Now, This developer got even more greedy. In 2019 August, this unethical company is ripping and scamming thousands of their customers off by removing all the basic and Pro features that we already paid for and forcing you to this expensive $50 annual subscription! Are you kidding me? Is this even legal? Why can't you add another $8 in-app purchase for the new features? Apple should launch an investigation on their unethical practice. How can you void or nullify the features we have had and force us to pay $50 yearly to get back the features we had? If you want subscription model, create a separate app to do that! You cannot make the upgrade to void all the features we paid for. This is a scam! I just paid the Pro version 3 months ago! After upgrade, everything doesn't work! This is fraud!
App is now useless
by MEP200 on 2019/09/12 03:27
Years ago they with me to add a few features that I needed to use the app for annotating papers and to take full advantage of Apple’s pencil. The result was an app that really stood out for me. Unfortunately, the latest update is a huge step back. It is clearly designed to make folks upgrade to the pro version and your subscription plan (which I will never do). However, the biggest problem is that the new version is very slow now and I can barely use it on my first generation iPad Pro. I restarted the device but no help. I then realized that my wife on her iPad (same model) still had the last version of the app. I deleted it from my iPad, extracted the old app from my wife’s iPad and transferred it to my tablet using iAmazing. However, when I did that the version that opens on my iPad is again the new one. Thank you very much for this enormous improvement. Either you give me back the old version of this now unusable app or I will need to find another PDF annotation program that I can use again.
Loved it, now my files are held hostage
by overitforreal on 2020/07/30 08:39
I’ve used this app for almost three years to save and organize scholarly research articles for graduate school. I loved everything about it. Now I’m completing my capstone project and I can no longer upload anything new unless I pay 50 dollars a year for services I already had access to before. I cannot even highlight passages. No warning was given to me prior to this change. On top of that, several of my most important files are now unretrievable due to being corrupted when I decided to save them to the cloud so I could pick them up on other devices. I intended to keep this essential library of research into my professional career, and now the only way for me to do that (and complete my capstone project) is to painstakingly re download each article onto a new app. This would not be so infuriating if I had been given notice of the upcoming changes.
Last update
by Hang10jesus on 2019/11/26 19:51
I use this application on a daily basis for college. I can take notes and read text books perfectly. I frequently switch from one pdf file to another while taking notes and studying. After the last update, when using the app, the top tool bar disappears and I am unable to switch to a different file. I have to close the app completely and reopen it for the tool bar to reappear. Also while taking notes, the app seems to forget that I have the pen tool selected in annotate mode. I have to tap the pen tool again to continue writing. Even though the last update was made to optimize the app, it has become less efficient then the previous update. Edit: new update installed, issue with not being able to open different files has gotten more persistent... the tool bar disappears and I cannot go back and forth from different pdf files. I must close the app completely and reopen it to restore the tool bar. Very frustrating when taking notes for class.
“Upgrade” disabled functionality, Readdle won’t fix it
by David F-Arkansas on 2019/09/19 11:57
I purchased PDF Expert: PDF Editor in January, 2018 for $9.99 and have the iTunes purchase receipt. I used the package occasionally to edit or redact PDFs, and it worked very well. About a month ago, I opened the package and it wouldn’t work. When I tried to edit or redact, it offered me a “free trial” teaser leading to a $50/year subscription. I tried “restore purchases” which didn’t work, then contacted Readdle. We’ve been back and forth on this for 3 weeks, but their final message on the topic appears to be “Screw you.” It is unimaginable to me that a company would “upgrade” a software package (named PDF EDITOR), removing its core capability, and try to get me to pay an outrageous upcharge to restore the functionality that I ALREADY PAID FOR. This is the most customer-hostile money grab that I’ve seen in a long time. While I really liked the software, I now hate this company, I’ll never buy anything from them again and I’ll do everything I can to discourage anyone else from doing so.
Had this app for years, now all of a sudden I have to pay a subscription to even use it
by Mlwrnp on 2020/08/31 04:26
I purchased this app years ago ($8 maybe?) and was using it every day until yesterday. Now I suddenly can’t edit PDFs I was editing just yesterday because I’m being prompted to pay for a subscription. I’m not doing any heavy duty work, I’m just essentially filling out paperwork, but apparently I need to pay $50 a year to do this. I thought when you purchased an app, that’s for life. It was until yesterday, I guess. I should be able to do the same things I’ve been doing for years and be given the OPTION to upgrade if I want, but it won’t even let me make a single mark with my Apple Pencil. I’m extremely frustrated because now, instead of getting work done, I have to find a new PDF editing app. I never write negative reviews, but I’m extremely upset by this. I’d be happy to find out that this is just a misunderstanding and my functions will be restored in an update or something like that. Until then... bye readdle.
Does what you want it to do
by Fortunate 500 on 2018/05/07 12:49
I use this app every day on an iPad Pro with an Apple Pencil to mark up, grade, and return online homework submissions that students submit either as PDF or phone camera photos of handwritten work. Exceedingly helpful for adding comments to first drafts of papers (including in type of students can’t read my handwriting) and theses. I also use it in committee meetings almost daily to refer to and add comments to documents as they are being discussed. It is also a great app for adding doodles during the boring parts :) In my opinion, the only things missing are (1) the ability to add an extra blank page when you need to create a summary page of notes and (2) the ability to take a snapshot of a section that includes drawings / images/ equations for pasting into another app (such as an email).
Original adopters don’t matter.
by Cesarg2199 on 2019/08/14 03:33
How can an app and a company completely disregard the original adopters and users of an app that they PAID FOR $10 be treated as the same as new incoming members who can download the app for free? I have long used your suite of apps in my daily college life but there are alternatives out there. I just can’t support a company that doesn’t care about their longtime user base, the ones that got them to where they are now in the first place just now out of nowhere start demanding a $50 year subscription fee to use some features they already had and to gain further access to their new ones. No free upgrade or even a discount. I recognize the fact that the subscription model is more profitable, but to demand the same subscription fee as any incoming user of the original user base is just unacceptable to me. I’ll be deleting this app along with the other suite of apps the company has. I’m seriously disappointed in how they went about doing things and have certainly lost my business.
Performance dip
by GreenDoomGuy on 2018/11/28 16:50
I am giving the three-star rating based on past experience as well as present. If I were only rating this on the last few months, it would be a 1-star review. This has been one of the most indispensable apps for me, as a teacher who uses an iPad pro to teach from. The efficiency with which I was able to store, organize, and edit documents was beyond comparison. Lately, however, there have been major slow-down issues and often I find myself staring at all of my documents stored on the cloud, unable to download them. I have wasted 30-plus minutes trying in futility to pull up a file I needed on the cloud without success. Incredibly frustrating. More recently, even trying to transfer a file from an app like notability to this one has caused PDF expert to just close without actually receiving the file. I hope they fix these issues because it would be a pain to find a new app to use.
The Simplicity of this program is great!
by legamin64 on 2020/09/29 16:05
I gripe about a lot of programming. It could me my nature or the fact that in my job precision is critical. The more steps, the more likely one is to create errors. With this program I can convert documents, edit, make notes, clarify points and return my findings in just a few simple steps. It saves time and transfers smoothly to my other app which in turn shares the finished work product with the redundant mainframe cloud and each of the assigned recipients around the world. All in the time it takes to read and make notes! It could use more user options such as font and scientific data conversion from handwritten notes. Better organization by .pdf # would be nice but most people can read dates and alpha files. Great job!
New “service” model unworkable for us
by Josh-IT on 2019/10/08 18:29
Prior to this update, we would purchase the app for $10 for new hires. We have this installed on dozens of devices and we’ve been very happy with it. With the latest update, the stamp and signature functionality has been locked behind a $10 PER MONTH subscription. So for 1 month, we can now get all the functionality we had permanently for the same price before. This is especially difficult as our employees use their own Apple IDs to manage their devices, so previously we could just use a gift card to purchase the app. That doesn’t work for a subscription. As a medium-sized business, we simply cannot afford to spend hundreds of dollars per month for functionality that we were able to pay a flat fee for before. We will be looking for alternatives as I assume they will not be changing their model. Incredibly frustrating as we had multiple workflows built around their functionality. Would love to be educated if I am missing something.
Greedy app devs. Spent 20$ and still have to pay 50/ a year for bonus features
by PolishPaczki on 2019/11/23 13:10
I like the app, I get that pdf apps are huge in business but as a student who spent 20$ (10$ then another 10$ for more features), I can’t even have an option to personalize the tool bar of pen and highlighting colors and anything else I need. That feature is an extra 50$ a year and if they added that feature into the 20$ I already spent I’d be very happy. I get that pdf conversion should be hidden behind a pay wall but the fact that I can’t even customize my own tool bar to save me plenty of extra time switching between the MAX 6 highlighting colors is very annoying. I have a system that needs 8/9 colors and it’s such a hassle and a pain to switch between them all the time. If y’all add this feature and stop being greedy I’ll rate 5 star but now I’m just debating a refund. If you’re a student look elsewhere, we’re already broke and their nickel and dimming you for basic features is annoying.
If only I can split the view within the app
by mrsockie on 2018/06/30 19:52
The product is wonderful. It is very easy to manage files, all nice selections of turning pages(vertical/horizontal), writing notes; it is a great app to read papers and books for students. If there is any bit of part that is lacking, then i would like to say the split view. Of course with this app, you can multi-task. However if i want to read two books at the same time, especially when one is for reference, I have to export one of the books to another pdf reading app and multi-task these two apps to have two books in my sight simultaneously. This is a bit of a hassle. As a owner of a 12.9” ipad - with a large screen, in-app split view would be a great option. Anyways, other than this small issue, everything is perfect.

The product is mediocre compared to things you can get for free anyways but here was the kicker for me. I started using this software for the editor to pdf invoicing. I use a MacBook, IPad, and iPhone Pro as many cross reference these devices as Apple has been notorious in setting up there devices to be used this way. So I started off on my computer downloaded the software, then connected them and used the app. It was a free trial for a week and then was 50/year. I make a couple invoices and my trial ends and I’m charged for the year and get on my Mac which is now telling me my trial has ended? I contact support who informs me that each platform has its own license fee? Ha, gimmick all day. So you pay 90 for the Mac a year 50 for the iPhone and I don’t even wanna see what the iPad says. So you need 3 different licenses to make this actually work! Let’s talk about a company that has a clue shall we? Microsoft 365, you purchase a license and it can be used on each device! It’s 100 / year and it’s clear as day for a license that can be used on iPad iPhone and a Mac. Nothing about it is a secret. This company is false advertisement all day deceiving you to think it is a one time subscription fee without informing you there is a subscription fee for each device used so at the end of the day you pay what 300/year for a pdf editor? Got my laugh for the day when these are free all over the place.
Needs a little tweeking
by Kmnjsn on 2018/11/11 20:17
I normally would give it 5 star but since IOS updated to 11, i have noticed it frequently freezes and crashes when importing files from another app. Forces you to kill the app more than once because of how it freezes before a crash. Sometimes when you reopen it, the file you were importing is still there and sometimes you have to go find it. It is integrated with multiple cloud accounts and works with safari as well as other file manager apps. I was lucky to have first downloaded it on a promo day when it was free and i have used it ever since. I strongly recommend for Ipad users. It actually offers more than adobe does and (for me it is free) but for those who purchase the app i assume the features would also be free. Also works very well on the iphone. Must have for PDFs hands down. This is my go to.
Pro user of PE6 still retain their features
by palm12345 on 2019/08/08 09:21
I was at first very frustrated with Readdle with the release of PE7 because I assumed I would be forced to pay 50/yr to retain features I already paid for. I am less mad though after doing some research. It seems that the pro users of PE6 still retain all of the features they purchased (excluding the ability to have two pens or markers). We get grandfathered in it seems — where new users have to pay 50 yr to have our features we only had to pay 20 dollars. It also seems that the only benefit pro users get in updating to the new pro tier in PE7 is: conversion of office files in-app, reduce file size option, and customize toolbar. These aren’t worth 50/yr IMO. If pro users of PE6 do upgrade to the new pro tier of PE7 we’d become the losers because then we would have to pay 70 dollars in total (if you Include the 20 we paid in PE6) where new users only had to pay 50. In short, pro PE6 users can update without consequence (excluding the lack of ability to have two pens and markers). I am still extremely disappointed in Readdle’s decision to move to such an absurd pricing strategy (as I think most are), but I think I will be content using the app as-is for my time in college. I will never pay 50/yr.
Highlighter tool is very Bad!
by Leonard 93 on 2020/03/08 22:26
I felt forced to write here as after contacting and emailing screenshots of the problems with its highlighter pens to them, still not seeing any fix or, improvements to the flexible highlighter pen! It is high time they fixed it. # Highlighter pen Problem: Highlighted marks fall on top of the words and for that reason, the words in the page become opaque, hard to see. In every other apps like microsoft onenote, goodnote etc. the highlighter marks fall under the words making the words stand out, look really highlighted, no matter how many times you highlight them. But in pdfexpert, paradoxically, highlighter marks make the words look less visible. You can only better see the colors on top of the words, not very good the words themselves, the very reason we highlight! Also, highlighter marks are also distorted when you try to erase something close to the highlighted marks. In addition, when zoomed in into a page, then highlighted something, then zoom out, the highlighter mark/field become distorted, especially, some edges of the mark/field disappear! There are these three main issues that has been disturbing me for this one and half year with this app. Quick focus is imperative. I hope they look over the other apps I mentioned, fix it soon as I am feeling irate at this stage after following up with them through several emails with screenshots quite a while ago.

Great PDF reader. Money Grubbing vendor
by Acheron2012 on 2021/11/27 23:34
This appears to be the best PDF reader on the App Store. But it is OUTRAGEOUS that they want $50 a year for basic editing functions. The only good part is these features are not really that important.
The BEST of the BEST

I accidentally purchased the reoccurring 1 year charge, and wanted to instead purchase the monthly one. I’m trying to get into contact with customer service, but there doesn’t appear to be any links working under their ‘Service’ tab. The app itself is great, I just wish they had better customer support.

Disappointed Subscription model

I use this app once a year in order to fill a document ONCE a year. I bought the best app for that purpose. Thanks to developers for the great idea of subscription model on that kind of app, that shows you are desperate for money. I prefer pay a price for the whole thing once like before (4,5,6,ect) no $49.99 a year that’s insane.

by AdamE11 on 2021/10/22 04:13
I love this app and am only giving it three stars because it renders the app completely useless to me. When searching large files, the highlighted search fields that match the search usually show some weird encryption rather than the word. “Sy$&87” rather than sender and so on.

Now every app has more bloatwear and is a pita to use. I need this for my heart tracing from the watch, which has never been right. I’m thinking Apple is going downhill They ruined a perfectly useful and easy to use app with the last update. I’ll have to use my PC to order things from the internet now because I can’t get the PDF into folders anymore and it’s a mess trying to dig through every thing saved . by parmoni on 2021/10/20 01:08
[UPDATE: redo button found, but no option to drag it onto toolbar for quicker access, not good UI/UX] So it actually happens quite frequently when i opt to fast tap the undo button to undo a series of mistakes, but then i accidentally undo one too many times, and when there’s dozens of edits all over the place, I’m left wondering which of my important edits accidentally got deleted from over undo-ing.
I can’t use the app
by iAmantaa on 2021/10/19 17:41

There is one glitch still, I will send a jobpack in and it will show the same info from a jobpack that I created like a year ago. We cannot figure out why it comes back on occasion.
Horrible Update

Free trial but you need to commit to potential $49.99 charge to do anything, they are planning on you forgetting to cancel before the trial ends so they can auto bill. That’s a horrible business practice, the trial is extremely limited and to honest that should be a red flag.

as you know, ios 15 has a low power mode. when its on, display is dimmed after some seconds and then iPad is locked. when reading a page, dimming the display is annoying and its hard and distracting to tap repeatedly to prevent dimming, especially when reading scientific texts. please add a section to prevent from dimming and locking while low power mode is on. thanks for such an extremely professional app

After the iOS 15 update, every time I open a file from iCLOUD, the pdfs stay open for 10 seconds before interrupting me and telling me that the file hasn’t been downloaded. I use this app because I was able to highlight things on pdf and view it across all platform that had my iCloud files, now every time I open file in app, it closes and restarts

What happened? Deleting
by Maui Kid on 2021/10/10 05:07
Paid for this app years ago and now it’s become subscription based for IOS! Wrong Readdle! Not a good way to treat your loyal customers! I’m deleting this app and the scanner app I paid for as well before that goes subscription too! Please don’t bother responding like you have to the others with the same issue. I’m gone!
Excellent except for…
by Ks.Euro on 2021/10/09 17:19
All around excellent app for dealing with PDFs. The only issue I have is that the app crashes EVERY single time I try to tab between fields using an external keyboard — doesn't matter the document. Had to retrain myself to stay away from the tab key whenever I’m in the app. I’ll revise this review to 5-stars if/when this issue gets fixed.
Cannot handle files larger than 10 pages
by enginxxxx on 2021/10/09 03:12
It has been months since I started using this app and it still has the same issue: it freezes and/or flashes the pages frequently if they are larger than a few pages. It is so frustrating that none of the updates fixed it. PDF Expert is my favorite app on my MB Pro but it is a complete disaster in iPad Pro.

I have used this program for many years to run our business, and I have yet to find a deficiency in it.

updated presentation mode is terrible
by therealian69420 on 2021/09/23 14:10
The old presentation mode was great — I saw the regular screen with all the various options, while people seeing my screen just saw the slides.

Upselling
by Remaxastar on 2019/09/07 14:49
I have used this program for years and own it for both my computer and my iPad.
Misleading update
by njpljkett on 2019/08/10 12:54
While this has always been the best pdf app for school textbooks, the new update has ruined what set it apart from competitors in terms of workflow.

READ False Advertisement All Day READ
by False ad Please read on 2020/05/09 14:30
The product is mediocre compared to things you can get for free anyways but here was the kicker for me.
