Missing Important Features
by jermzim on 2020/09/16 22:42
I have the STR DN860. Although the unit doesn’t technically support multiple zones, this could be accomplished with software. Two pieces of feedback regarding the “Speaker Level” menu: - Add a checkbox to completely disable audio output next to each speaker (current workaround is to drop level to -10db, but this will still output volume and is cumbersome) - Add a preset control to allow quickly switching between scenes (activated speakers and db levels). My personal use case: I have four speakers indoors and two outdoors. I want to easily enable/disable the outdoor speakers.
Works well with my XB23
by Ed M2 on 2020/09/14 23:50
I like the XB23 speaker I have but it is sometimes has a bit too much base. Equalizer feature in the app adds great flexibility. I have a Sony turntable connected to the XB23 via Bluetooth.
Power level
by frankster222 on 2020/09/11 17:40
Power level still burried 3 levels deep. Should be on first screen or in the battery widget. Is anybody reading reviews?
Disappointing!
by vanutuo on 2020/09/05 15:43
This app version fails to install on xs max. Other apps install just fine. Poor quality control on Sony’s end.
Wildly Poor App takes a great speaker down a notch
by sbajsksbabba on 2020/08/21 08:54
I have to start out by saying I am TRULY impressed with the quality of the speaker itself at the price point and size footprint. And I’m even happy that there is an app that allows me to EQ the bass away late at night (or turn it up when I’m outside), but beyond that, this app is atrocious. First, let’s talk about the volume bugs. Any time any event occurs that caused a sound on your phone outside of the music or video being played, such as a text message, first you get that awful dip in volume that takes it way too far, and then BOOM! Now, for NO reason whatsoever, you are at maximum volume. There is no possible justification for this. How does a bug like that slip through, and then everyone goes home at the end of the week and is just like “ahhh whatever, the app kinda works...who cares...”? Considering Sony is one of the world’s largest media companies, and this is such a simple bug to fix, you’re welcome to hire any number of designers, or ME in fact! And for an extraordinarily low rate, too! When I go to work, I actually care about what I do (Audio Engineer/Postproduction Specialist) and I don’t leave until the job’s done. Perhaps consider hiring a likeminded developer to make an app that functions well, has a menu structure and UI that is a little better than the current “os 9” or DOS theme you have going on with arial font size 11 in black for everything and zero creativity at all. Speaking of creativity, at least you got creative with the names of the colors! Now I know that “Calm Cinnabar” means kinda greenish-orangish-ish. I mean, at least live-action-roleplay pretending to try to care about your job, because many, many people are desperate for one, myself included.
If i where Sony I wouldn’t put my name on it...
by Hoglicker on 2020/08/18 00:24
I have been fooling around with this app on and off for a couple years and it doesn’t and hasn’t ever worked right. Come on Sony you cant come up with something better then this? Pathetic. It really is a terrible app. Good luck.
Incredibly hard to use
by nguyen, ryan on 2020/08/13 16:48
I bought the Gtk-Xb7 and the only way to change the lights on this speaker is to use this incredibly difficult app. The connection to the speaker gets lost everytime you get off the app and it takes an annoying 15 seconds to reconnect. The app looks horrid as it is, but the fact that is barely work is sad. The xb7 is a great speaker, but this app brings it down by a ton.
Wow
by Ujpesti on 2020/08/13 03:31
I don't think I've seen so many one and two start reviews. For sure this app is certainly not the best I ever used. I just bought a new Sony earphones and I used them for two days. All that time I get a 100% charger. Wow! This thing is good! Then it drops all of a sudden to 70% Then in a half hour it's now 30%. I am starting to lose faith in this app. What's next? One star

This app runs so slow and just looks so outdated.
Simply horrible, Sony!
by MadMexAz on 2020/08/08 18:10
Sony should be embarrassed to be polluting the App store with this useless “app”; more like a mishap! Please do your users a favor and remove this disaster!
Absolute trash!!!
by Luis Laureano on 2020/08/08 15:54
Spent $1200 on a Sony HT-NT5 sound bar along with two Sony SRS-ZR5 wireless surround sound speakers. The sound bar and speakers sound phenomenal themselves, but the app absolutely ruins the whole experience. The only way to link all the speakers whether in multi-room mode for parties and music, or surround sound mode for movies is through the MusicCenter app which is absolute garbage. It is extremely glitchy and basically useless if you want to throw a party and have it in multi-room mode because this disables the Bluetooth feature which means you can only play music through your home network with the MusicCenter app. This would be okay only and IF only the app would actually recognize any of the music that I have stored on my phone through AppleMusic. You have to add all the music to the “My Library” menu on the app and play your songs through there. I have over 20 gigs of music on my iPhone and this worthless app only allowed me to add 35 songs stating some bull crap about DRM (digital rights management). Then it only gives you three other options to play music through the app and that is either using Spotify, SoundCloud, or YouTube music but only if you have their premium service paid subscription. So basically the app is useless for having parties since I can’t really play any music other than the 35 old songs the app allowed me to add to “My Library”. Why in the hell should I pay for another music service to hear their music through the app when I already pay for AppleMusic? Also, the volume control is awful as well and doesn’t allow you to change sound modes when all speakers are connected. It is just a preset mode and you can only adjust the bass through the controller on the sound bar’s remote controller. The songs only play one at a time even if you have a playlist created meaning that you have to access the app for ANYTHING that you have to do including playing songs. This app is absolute and utter garbage. It is extremely frustrating and almost infuriating to spend $1200 on speakers just so that this app restricts you to basically only use them as a surround sound for movies. If using the bluetooth function I can only pair one surround sound speaker at a time or just my sound bar by itself without the surround speakers if I want to play music from my phone. Complete trash! I love the quality and sound of the sound bar and speakers, but Sony literally sh*t on me with this app. Next time I will just go with SONOS. Never again...
Connects but app says it’s not
by bekahgui on 2020/08/07 21:38
Just bought a new sound bar and even after going through all of the suggestions and set up multiple times the sound bar will connect to my phone but will not pass the screen telling me how to connect. I can play music on it but need this app to work right so I can link it with other devices. 👎🏻
Device Chain Faulty with Update!! GARBAGE!!
by satellite989 on 2020/07/23 21:05
I have two XB23s and two XB33s and I like to use the device chain to link them. Ever since the new update to the app I can’t chain all four devices and it’s BEYOND annoying!! I paid my money for a product and I demand it works!!! I’m not your test subject, that’s what R&D is for Sony!! GARBAGE!!
Replacing Sony deck because this app is horrible
by Idaho fly boy on 2020/07/21 13:39
I purchase a really nice Sony deck for my car and have regretted it every day because of this ap. I made that purchase almost two years ago and I am astounded by the lack of attention Sony has given to improving the app and making it functional. Every time I turn the car off and restart it I have manually connect my phone with the app. There is no way to do this automatically and it drives me nuts. I have purchased a different brand of deck for two other vehicles and they work perfectly and automatically connect. With the requirement to drive and use hands free calling I am going to replace my Sony deck and get a third deck from “other brand”. Not going to ever look at a Sony deck again. You had your chance and two years later I am not waiting any longer for you to realize that customer experiences matter. Good bye.
Not saving settings?
by Tevin28749 on 2020/07/18 16:41
Why do I have to redo all the settings every time I connect to my speaker(GTK-XB7)? Y’all can’t make an app that saves all settings...? Not to mention it takes forever to load.
Needs Update
by Sina Taheri on 2020/07/11 13:49
This app still *needs* a big update and I've anticipated it for at least 7 months since I've set up my Sony MHC-V41D Party Speaker. I think it deserves this much love from it's creators.
Ridiculous
by supreme89 on 2020/07/11 02:04
The app is broken and Sony doesn’t seem to do anything to fix it
Sony FFS Fire whoever is supposed to make this app work
by Targosh on 2020/07/10 23:34
My god this app is atrociously broken. I’m trying to party chain two of my speakers and it’s a nightmare doing so. It’s a 5 minute process trying to find the other speaker (which is connect leas that 10 feet away) and it has trouble doing that. After that, some unknown error happens and the process restarts all over again. Then when the group is even made (which as a heads up, you apparently got to make the group again EVERY TIME you use the app), the speakers will either play static, disconnect, or even sync the music so badly one of the speakers is a second slower than the other. You would think that a big name like Sony would be competent enough to make a working music app, all their competitors have no problem doing so. Whoever made the app this bad should be thrown over a cliff for making something more broken than Sonic 06.
Waste
by ArabKnightMC on 2020/07/09 08:01
Can’t connect to Spotify. Doesn’t work at all. Yes, I followed all the instructions, various different steps, and even some of my own ideas... nothing.
Seriously Sony?
by Nostrebla on 2020/07/08 15:31
Sony makes good if not great physical products. I have a Bluetooth speaker and a car stereo from them I'm happy with. But the apps? The apps are truly pathetic for a company worth over $80b. Touch areas often don't work. Clearly no design effort was put into this. It's just so obviously an afterthought, like they only made this app because they were required by court order or something. It's pretty sad.
Does not stay connected
by Kodiak54 on 2020/07/04 18:06
All I really want the app for is to check the battery level. Extremely annoying that the app loses connectivity constantly and you have to sit off the speaker and turn it back on just to check the battery level.
Bluetooth connection problem
by Family iMac 2017 on 2020/06/26 15:26
I wasted lots of time trying to connect via Bluetooth. No luck. This App tries to sell music subscriptions but fails to do a fundamental function right. My UE Boom is so simple and easy and sounds great in a small size. I regretted spending hundreds of dollars on this speaker with an useless app. It sits there collecting dust. Why Sony makes great products but does so poorly in software.
Come on Sony...
by Heywoodjablowme#%#%#? on 2020/06/25 13:46
With today’s technology you would expect Sony to knock it out of the park with their app but they haven’t. The app should connect effortlessly with all of their products but it doesn’t.
Works great with Sony head unit in my camper
by Jimmy1216 on 2020/06/20 16:06
Everything that can be adjusted on the unit itself is adjustable in the app with a beer in one hand sitting around a fire.

what happened?
by Redrexx on 2020/06/12 04:46
I began using this app in 2015 when I purchased an STR-DH750 so I have seen my fair share of software updates. This app had its quirks but otherwise functioned enough to make it useful. Now the app takes longer to load the features, if they show up at all. I had to open several times to fully load. Also bring back dark theme! The organization of the functions could use a refresh. A volume button on every page would be useful. It feels like this app is now an just after thought in the realm of Sony.
AppStore have to kickout this app

Perfect for my Sony Bluetooth speaker
by Cryptycal on 2020/05/25 01:32
The app comes in handy for changing the way my Sony Bluetooth speaker sounds. You can add more treble or more bass. Also you can check what percentage of charge your speaker has. I don’t use the illumination all that much but the app lets you control the lighting as well.
Notification sounds

Great for car head units
by thehiddendoor on 2020/05/20 09:04
I’ve bet using this app for a Sony MEX-N5300BT head unit, it works amazingly and it makes using the head unit so easy to use, I haven’t ran into any issues
Terrible app! Sony - you are better than this.
by andyyyyyyyyyyydhdhbddyyyyy on 2020/05/19 22:45
I bought the RXS-GS9 - it’s a $1500.00 unit - the app doesn’t scroll for the first 30 seconds of opening it (ever). It automatically launches when I get in my car, and doesn’t remember past settings. This is pathetic for a company that prides itself on its electronics. Either build a product that doesn’t need an app, or build an app that reflects the hardware people pay good money for. Fix this!
Terrible App
by MicRyaGar on 2020/05/17 01:41
Most features of this app do not work. The on screen instructions refer to menus and buttons that don’t even exist.
Need to reset illumination setting each time
by mooseperson on 2020/05/15 00:53
Please remember set illumination settings. I’d prefer to not manually turn off rave mode every time I power on my speaker.
Understand the low ratings
by jmadcock15 on 2020/05/09 14:47
Splurged on a nice medium tier pair of sony headphones, the wh-xb900n, mostly satisfied, give the headphones an 8/10, but i don’t see the point of the app. My phone performed the capabilities of the app by itself and i was mostly interested in an equalizer with the app which if it exists it isn’t obvious and haven’t found it yet. Headphones are fine, app is garbage
This App is Major Trash
by WVTKIINS on 2020/05/06 03:02
I’m sorry, what can this app actually do ? Also doesn’t help that troubleshooting steps are very outdated.
Broken
by Pootisdaber on 2020/05/05 18:43
I bought an xb41 and its a great speaker but the app is horrible and works 10% of the time and it doesn't let me click on the speaker the first time i connect so i always have to do it twice and it gets annoying not to mention when i open a picture that someone sent me it for some reason decides to blast the speaker and scares the living hell out of me so yeah 1/10 on the app but good speaker

by SouthofFifth on 2020/05/01 23:51

Not very epic
by MicrowaveOvn on 2020/04/23 21:50
I’ve bought the GTK-XB90 and I love the speaker, but this app is so slow and buggy. You’d expect higher quality from Sony but clearly they put all their money into hardware and not software.
Hate this app
by R@q3 on 2020/04/19 17:03
This app is the only way that my phone connects to the Bluetooth in my car and I have to listen to it skipping constantly for the first 5 minutes of my drive. Also I can’t even connect to the stereo in my room anymore with the app. Not sure how it’s getting worse but you guys need to update this app.
NOT Sony Quality
by dml7769 on 2020/04/19 14:18
TERRIBLE APP. Worst app I have ever used. Sony needs to make DRASTIC improvements. I’m sending my Sony SB32 back to Amazon because the app is so bad, and it affects the actual sound of the speaker. There’s no way that this app deserves even one star.
okok
by Jac Jac xo on 2020/04/19 02:42
its kind of pointless to have a separate app for the speaker rather than just connecting through bluetooth but controlling the lights is a nice feature. i want this app available for mac laptop though so i can play music from my laptop

SRS-XB32
by Mike Hidalgo on 2020/04/16 20:57
The app works good with this speaker. I’m able to control the light show and other features this speaker have. Only problem I had, and not sure if it was the speaker or the app or my phone itself(XR), it was randomly skipping a few song tracks every 2 seconds. Then of course it stops. It was weird. So yea the app is a must have if you have this speaker.
Terrible. Useless. Pathetic. Annoying. PITA.
by JoshieS5 on 2020/04/04 18:09
I have a STR-DN1070. It is currently impossible to listen to anything in zone 2 that’s not playing in zone 1. It used to work; not well but I could eventually make it work. I had to break out an old receiver to send music to my second zone. Between this app and all the issues Sony has implementing Android OS on my TV, I think I’m done with Sony.
Never works
by Josh Nichols on 2020/03/27 02:45
Avoid Sony Wi-Fi speakers. The software doesn’t work. Doesn’t stay connected. Every time I want to use a speaker I have to set it up again and group speakers. I’ve been fighting this for years hoping the software would update and get fixed. What a waste of money. I’m just going to trash it all.

Not Connected
by Hott_Rayne on 2020/03/24 14:35
The app keeps stating the speaker isn’t connected, but I’m playing music from it... I am unable to change settings because the device “isn’t setup yet”. Also the speaker’s connection is often awful. Sound crackles often, which is a software issue that hasn’t been fixed with a driver update. What’s wrong with Sony?!
Just horrible
by Happyface-v2 on 2020/03/07 23:03
To just control the volume, you have to navigate several clicks into the app. To set sound settings is the same. Utterly useless.

How to put XB21 into double/stereo modeo
by Main Apple on 2020/02/27 19:50
Instead of just repeating what everyone else wrote about the app (which is all true), let me tell you the steps to put XB21 (and similar?) speakers into double or stereo mode. #1) Do not follow their instructions. #2) Download this app but do not open. #3) Take the first speaker and turn it on. #4) Press and Hold Power Button. The Bluetooth icon will flash quickly. #5) Go to your General Settings, click Bluetooth (will show SRS-XB21 at the bottom), and wait until it has connected. The speaker will also give you a 2-tone beep. Note, other Sony speakers may have a Bluetooth button. #6) Click on the blue ‘i’ circle beside the connected speaker (on your Bluetooth settings on your phone) and disconnect it. #7) Follow steps #3-5 to add additional speaker. Disconnect from bluetooth additional speaker you just added and click connect on first speaker. #8) Go to the app. Agree to their terms of service, etc. #9) You should see a speaker at top. Click to Edit Speaker Group. It will take you to another screen and should show you the second speaker you added. #10) Click to Add speakers. This will link them into double mode. From there you can change them to Stereo if you want via the Edit Group button.
Will actively seek to never buy a Sony device again
by Anonymous712637183 on 2020/02/24 16:04
Spent hundreds of dollars on a sound system. The system sounds awesome. Apparently Sony considers 2 years its lifespan. I cannot use any of the extra functioning (EQ, individual speaker volume, Subwoofer volume, etc) because they removed it from this app. Even when it did work it was a hot mess. So much money wasted.
App is not Apt
by Kamkamal on 2020/02/24 04:28
Can’t believe it’s Sony App. The app name has no way connected to the speaker. Even after the speaker paired still shows needs setup. Live feature made me to opt for this speaker but the sound options given won’t suit for any occasion, very disappointed. Please remove this app not at all required.
Bad Sony Speaker and Worthless App.
by DurangoBeach on 2020/02/17 04:30
Bad Sony speaker doesn’t work without the App and the bad App tends to turn off the speaker or it turns down the sound very low. Reloading the App doesn’t fix the bug. Discarded the speaker and the bad app!

by 134234wewewewewew on 2020/02/01 23:38

Useless
by VazhaVili on 2020/01/19 23:00
Never works form me, doesn’t connect, freezes in the middle this app is just plain useless. Would be nice if Sony included physical buttons for light control because I just cant turn it off without an app which obviously never works. Thank you Sony!
Bad App
by Birrë on 2020/01/14 04:15
This App is slow. When you open it back it takes a few seconds to connect with Sony speaker. One of the worst and weakest App that I ever seen. Very poor made. However, I really like the srs xb32 speaker.
Awful app.
by Stankybuddha410 on 2020/01/12 18:06
I was trying to refrain from writing an ugly but this app really is just terrible. For Sony to have the kind of reputation and customer loyalty that it has one would think that there would have been an urgency to get this app working properly. Sony has really dropped the ball with this one. Should have just waited to launch this program.
Garbage app!

Worst app ever!
by Thebigkahuna900 on 2020/01/08 05:28
I love the speaker but this app doesn’t work. I purchased 2 Sony speakers xb31 and xb30 and get get them to sync! If I knew how garbage this app is I would have bought the Bose. So frustrating and this will drive you crazy. I expect better from Sony.
Apps are just disappointing
by LucasR86 on 2020/01/04 04:06
I bought the GTKXB60 and the settings on the app are just disappointing. The speakers great but this app and the fiestable app are just childish. Make these a little more advanced and not so crappy. Also, PLEASE make the lighting options better. Both these apps are just trash compared to the speaker. Also, just a heads up but if you change the light settings on either app you’re stuck with those options. I personally thought the factory light settings were great, but you can’t change back to those if you change any light settings in the apps. Even tried resetting the speaker multiple times and multiple ways.
Bad Bad App
by racquetball11 on 2019/12/30 17:51
This is one of the worst apps that I have ever run across. 1. Doesn’t hold Bluetooth connection even when the speaker is playing. 2. Adding a second device is a nightmare. When trying to add a second speaker the second speaker doesn’t always work. Also if you don’t disconnect the second speaker from you phone Bluetooth settings it will fail. When trying to convert to stereo, don’t bother. It will frustrate you.
Fails to connect to speaker
by mgh6x37 on 2019/12/28 09:41
I have two XB30s and have them connected to each other. When they are connected they show up on the app, however it is never able to control them and says connection failed. If I connect one speaker at a time I have no trouble. I am able to play audio correctly so I do not see why Sony's own app does not recognize their product. This app is clearly terribly designed and has been for years. Sony clearly has no intention of actually fixing it.
2019?
by JB347 on 2019/12/27 21:52

Frustrating user experience
by TxAgg2002 on 2019/12/26 23:44
Terrible app, I only bought Sony products (xb20 and later an xb21) to link them together. The sound is great from the speakers, but the app makes for a horrible user experience. It kept saying that the products must be registered to link them together, after doing that, it still does not work. Again, the sound is great on the product, but the functionality is far less than advertised and what I paid for.
Garbage App
by BillyJr84 on 2019/12/25 19:33
Sony needs to fix the app. Their hardware engineers know what they are doing; not so much the software people.

Horrible App
by SIHLEAH on 2019/12/24 08:47
Does not work! Doubt I will buy any more Sony Products! Bought so I could pair other speakers.... well the app is the only way you can do that and the app doesn’t work. Apparently the developer doesn’t care enough to fix this app.... so Sony you have lost my business! Horrible!
Hmm...
by drummdude716 on 2019/12/20 17:45
I’m happy that it lets me adjust the sound of the speaker, but I wish it would let me change the name.
Worst App ever

This app is Garbage
by Rip The Guts on 2019/12/17 13:16
I have used this app for about 6 months so now I can give it a good review. This app is necessary in order to run wireless speakers with your Atmos. It would be a great app if it didn’t continue to drop the wireless speakers. The purpose of this app is exactly what is not doing . Controlling wireless speakers to perform wireless performances. Sony needs to get their heads off their butts.
Come on Sony
by DFSojourn on 2019/12/15 01:29
We just bought the XB 72 speakers. Can’t wait to return them. The sad part is the speakers sound good. The app that you need to run them is so bad. Sorry Sony you lost a sale and our business.

Sound quality better with app but!!
by Micah30 on 2019/12/09 22:48
I have the SRS-XB21 Bluetooth speaker. The sound quality is great from the app. But once I subscribed to Apple Music, the app will not let me play music downloaded from the subscription unless I purchased the music before hand. In the app I have the ability to select the Apple Music app but it would be nice to us only one app.
My speakers are great but will not connect to Alexa.
by I giveup on a nick name on 2019/12/06 04:19
I’m going to be honest, I don’t know who to blame here. The Sony app runs a very simple setup and says that you’re good to go, however, the Alexa and Alexa app do not even see the sound bar. Thus, I cannot connect, despite my going through every help webpage on Sony and the Alexa website. When I go to the Alexa application in the sound bar, it just tells me to use voice commands to activate. To which Alexa says she doesn’t know what I’m talking about.
You cannot pair two speakers
by Boggie1238 on 2019/12/04 21:01
You can’t even use YouTube inside their app . I’d expect this software would make it easier to pair two speakers on a phone and listen to what ever you want or even twitch or something that plays sounds.
May Cause Your Headphone Shutdown Automatically

Got both xm3 and xm2. Both turnoff automatically as soon as I connect them via Bluetooth. Problem solved by uninstalling the app. What a buggy app
Still garbage. Wouldn’t have bought speakers if I knew
by Macbaine1 on 2019/11/26 23:09
Checking in almost a year after first purchase. App is still garbage. Basic functions continue to fail. No idea what all these monthly updates are for, literally nothing has gotten better. App still crashes every other time I try to connect to a device. Forget party chain. If you ever get it working, which is rare, leave the app and don’t return, or it will crash. If this app represents Sony, they have fallen a long, long way. I would never have bought these speakers if I knew this app was required. Their failure to address major problems in over a year shows they just don’t care.
Unreliable
by chaffinr05 on 2019/11/21 10:45
How is Sony willing to keep these horrible apps around for their products with working to improve and maintain them? It’s becoming a trend for them. Both with their cameras and their speakers. Stop outsourcing your stuff and get it together!
Your sound system is very mediocre
by Luismi75 on 2019/11/17 21:47

Great radio. Absolutely terrible app.
by Offman/1981 on 2019/10/27 21:53
This app is so terrible to use. I just am not going to use the connecting of the speakers or this app. It takes so long to do one thing, mainly do to its loading. Then it cannot even probably connect to the one main speaker that has already been connected.
The worst app in the App Store
by CBNYSEA on 2019/10/24 13:10
I’ve never written a review before, but this app is so bad, I feel compelled to warn other would be buyers of Sony receivers to avoid this situation. I need this app for one primary function, which is to control my Sony receivers remotely, via my phone, primarily to stream music and it can’t even do that. This app can’t connect to either of my receivers via wifi and does so only sporadically via Bluetooth. I have dozens of connected devices in my home and this is literally the only one that doesn’t work. So what will this app for?
Just annoying...
by Thehomiefromtheokc on 2019/03/04 20:31
I just bought the srs xb31 for $150, I love the speaker but you must have the app running and Bluetoothed in order to use any extra features.... ok that’s ok if it actually would work 1/4 if the time. It’s always losing its sync and goes to default. There’s a party mode where you can bang on the speaker to play drums and stuff and I love it! Gives you something to tap while listening to music but half 75% of the time the app doesn’t recognize the device even when I’m still playing music, so I have to close the app, turn bt off and on, reconnect because it doesn’t try to automatically, then go into the app crossing my fingers, and half the time it shows 3 extra speakers saying “need to be setup” but still doesn’t connect to mine.... so repeat. Finally have it working and your settings ready to go!? Well have fun when you lock your phone and go back into the app because it’s unsynced again... and just a helpful tip, don’t lock your phone while in the app, eventually you’ll have to restart your phone to even get it to work because it bugs out.... the quality of the speaker is what I expected with Sony but the app really ruins their reputation with me if I see “extra features in app”. Recommend the speaker if you just want good sound and bass, but don’t recommend it if you was wanting to use the extra features of the speaker and if that’s you deciding factor between $150 and another good speaker with as good quality for $60...
The app and the speakers are definitely 2 different things
by EricaJanine on 2019/07/05 20:25
A lot of these reviews are the same—speakers are great but the app is not. I agree. I have xb31 and xb32s—using party chain became a challenge because of the chain got broken, I had to disconnect all the speakers, forget them, then repair—even if the party chain worked with the same speakers. Once I got it fully working, I kept having to relevel the volumes on the speakers after a while—the leveling out didn’t work at all. Luckily I only had 4 to maintain during a party and not more or it could have caused the music to fail altogether. The speakers are phenomenal. The app is almost a dealbreaker because it makes them seem glitchy. These speakers have been marketed with this feature and it just doesn’t work well enough to be reliable. I hope that Sony fixes this soon—it’s enough to cause me to question the brand.
Astonished
by jclary6 on 2019/01/17 06:28
This app is ridiculously broken, you'd think that with a company like Sony they'd be able to make a decent functioning app for their products that cost in the triple digits. I Honestly, I wouldn't be surprised if they had some college student design this app. How many updates has this app had? Yet how does it still not work? And why is the interface so poor? Sony, you are on the NYSE. You're one of tech's giants, yet somehow in 2019 you can't manage a simple app. I'd leave zero stars if I could. please fix the bugs and redo the entire interface. nobody that has a phone capable of installing apps needs to access their library or streaming platforms via the app--please remove this the entire aspect is pointless. if somebody is going to download your app, it's to customize the settings, not to play music on apps that they ALREADY have installed. This app doesn't have to do much. Just fix the issue where the settings you select won't stay permanent! They only work when the app is open or recently used. Like I said, there are issues present in this app that it's like they assigned this to an intern. Sorry to the intern that made this app, but I'd leave zero stars if I could. 5/5 stars for the product though.
The app is atrociously bad, almost ruined a party
by ilikeverizonbut on 2018/12/09 19:27
My new Sony SRS-XB21 Extra Bass wireless speakers are fantastic. Sony knows great sound better than anyone. This app that controls them however, is atrociously bad. Bought 3 of these speakers specifically for a party I hosted and this app alone almost ruined the whole night. Extremely clumsy and complicated to add other identical sony wireless speakers to it, called a “party chain” which takes at least ten minutes, and multiple dead ends through the app. Once they’re connected, all is good. But then try doing the same thing hours later, with the exact same speakers and the exact same app and you have to go through the whole process again, from scratch, which is insane. Also the app won’t let you “rename” the speakers (e.g. “living room,” “kitchen” “dining room”, etc), so if you buy 3 or 4 wireless speakers and they’re the same color, they’re all labeled “SRS-XB21” in your phone so you have no idea which is in what room. Also you can’t control volume of individual speakers through the app (like Sonos), you have to manually control the volume on individual speakers. Had to uninstall and reinstall the app it each time I had to set them up (3 total times) which was the only fix that worked. SRS-XB21 Extra Bass speakers themselves: 5 stars Sony Music Center App: Zero stars
Getting better
by manimalthefarmer on 2019/05/19 22:38
I have an STR-DN106 A/V receiver that I bought a number of years ago and didn't even know there was an app I could use until a little over a year ago. At first the app was useless, would consistently drop connection when it would connect which was only about 1/4 of the time. I started using it recently again and it has been a lot better. The receiver controls sound in multiple rooms and sits in a cabinet so it’s nice to have such easy access to the controls. I would have been much more frustrated if the app was required for the options. It’s come a long way but there’s still room for improvement. This app has the potential to be a great value added to Sony products but only if they’re able to improve its quality.
Good bye.
Run away!
by Squiresmj on 2019/06/06 12:17
I’ve been able to get the speakers to painter and a part in chain mode as they said you can do. I bought an XB 20 and an XB 21 they will not party chain together one shuts off the other one turns on then the other one shuts off and the other one turns on it constantly disconnects from one and reconnect to the other but never plays the two together I have read the instructions several times I have looked online to try and find a way to make them work together as they are described because even on Sony‘s website it says that they are fully compatible together and even gives instructions of how to connect an XP 21 to another XP 21 and I was not even able to do that do not buy the Sony speakers and do not get this app, unless you only buy one speaker in which case one speaker works fine all by itself.
Literally out here
by SithlordsoupOfYoutube on 2018/07/30 07:13
Recently purchased XB21. Amazing speaker, especially in live mode. I don’t know how it manages to throw sound behind you but it does. As for the app, I feel like it was halfway developed or isn’t syncd up to the latest demands of the newest phone OS updates. The steps are clear and concise for setting up but won’t let you continue on to the next step until the current process is done..which is weird because you can’t even finish step 2. After trying a few setups it finally budged and paired with the phone.
The most annoying app I’ve ever used.
by ThisIsAnUnusedNickNameIHope on 2019/03/25 23:58
This App is so bad that I’m considering returning both of my Sony GTK-XB60 speakers because of it. It somewhat works if you have only one speaker, but it will drive you absolutely mad when trying to group for stereo use. EVERY time you leave the premises and Bluetooth disconnects, the speakers don’t reconnect as a stereo group or even remember their previous settings. The speakers revert back to an annoying default of Rave mode lighting, which will send you into a 1970s disco epileptic seizure. Then when you go in, try to reconnect, the regroup fails 9 times out of 10 times after taking 10 minutes of hour glass wait times to get to the appropriate screen. If anyone should write a functional app for these speakers please let me know. I will gladly buy it!!
Good riddance. Dropped support for receiver
by Beantown-G on 2019/05/27 13:22
In today’s market, customer experience *is* the brand, even more than features or price. Sony used to know that. I bought the STR-DN1050 because I could control it with my phone. After a quick “Update all” on iPhone apps and SongPal was useless. I have a degree in computer science and know it’s not rocket science to support multiple interfaces for backward compatibility, *especially* for an army of loyal customers. Sony, you think this is going to push us to purchase new receivers? LOL. Your influence in consumer electronics is shrinking and this is just another example of the acceleration downward. I’m exhausted being screwed by companies selling products that don’t work as marketed - or sneaky/aggressive product support decisions. Good riddance.
Dj effects poor
by I only review when needed. on 2018/11/30 01:55
Just got the Sony GTX-XB7 and it’s amazing. However app is very poorly made. Dj effects only allow one effect to be used at a time (flanger, isolates, wah). Also those are the only 3 options. On Sony’s website the picture of the dj effects is different than on my iPhone. It seems on there website you can have multiple effects in one menu and can use them all. Other than these effects there is no reason for the app besides connecting your speaker to your phone, which u can do anyways in Bluetooth settings. App is in great need for an update to make customers happy with available options that are on there website but not on the app.
Please enable access to “Display” button data for ST5000
by Danny_Bob on 2018/07/06 18:02
It would be great if this app would show the “Display” button info (LPCM, number of audio channels, kHz, etc.) for the ST5000. When viewing content in 4K with Enhanced format HDMI, the Display and Options buttons don’t work because the soundbar is unable to overlay the on screen display while in that mode. Getting access to that information in this app would be a great workaround. I currently use this app to adjust the a/v sync settings while in Enhanced format HDMI because that setting is not accessible from the soundbar itself unless I switch back to Standard format HDMI.
I can help with the privacy issue.
by SnowMyst630 on 2018/07/24 16:07
I had the same problem at first with not being able to check mark the privacy button. But since I have had allot of Sony products and software, I knew that they expect you to read the entire privacy policy in total. Even after I read it in total, I still had to give it several more tries before it worked. They must have a timer on it. I hope this helps everyone to get the app up and running. Thanks
what happened?
by Redrexx on 2020/06/12 04:46
I began using this app in 2015 when I purchased an STR-DH750 so I have seen my fair share of software updates.
Works nice
by Adrian2003 on 2018/03/29 03:24
Using app with an srs-xb30. It's works great. Lights and strobe can be easily adjusted. Also like that the equalizer can be adjusted with the app because the speaker had the bass just a bit too high, but adjusting with the app made the sound even better. Would give a 5 star review but I don't like having to pair everytime I'm trying to use the speaker. It would be nice if they put a battery display on the app so I don't have to push the button on the speaker to check the remaining battery charge.

Great Speaker AWFUL App
by dmp356 on 2018/12/24 21:27
This is my first ever app review...that’s how frustrating this app is. This app seems like it’s a “use once and trash” app. It only works the first time I open it. If I open it a second time it seems to lose connection with the app, even though the speaker itself is still connected. I subsequently have to delete and then download the app again. It’s especially frustrating because in order to adjust some of the features on the speaker (ex. Lights) I have to delete and download the app constantly. It essentially makes those features useless due to the impracticality of trying to use them. Strongly considering returning the speaker.
Awesome app!
by someone thats someone on 2019/08/07 23:44
Many people that have left a comment on this app end up giving it 2 stars or 1, they always complain of how it stops music videos or just the music and unpairs the speakers. This app has always worked well for me and to my SRS-XB41. Everything works as it should. The other people should just go and get an Ihome, it works splendidly. Ihome has the same app... only for Ihome speakers. Both are goo apps and speakers company.

I bought a bass boosted speaker. The speaker itself is probably the best I’ve bought but the music center seems to be the controller for it. I have my speaker connected to my phone and I’m playing music but the app thinks I’m not connected and refuses to let me control it. I’m currently laying in my bed while my speaker is on its full fledge race lighting mode. This isn’t the first time I’ve had to do this and I might return the speaker. I’ll probably have another night without and another day with it’s battery being wasted on lights instead of used on music. I hope this app will be fixed soon
Not at all what I expected from Sony
by cris audiophile on 2019/06/14 15:58
I’m running this application on the iPhone XS MAX, so I know it’s not the phone but the application that keeps on having problems. You have to re-sync and do the Bluetooth process constantly just to be able to keep using the sounds setting and other features that the app has to offer. I bought and SB41 speaker and while the speaker is of great quality I can’t process why the app is so unreliable. For such a known company it should at least be able to serve the most basic functions. Come on Sony just invest in this at least a fraction of what you’re now investing in marketing!
Can’t check the privacy policy box to even use the app!
by Truckmanwithhearingaid on 2018/06/26 01:37
IPhone X cannot get past the privacy policy. Read it, re read it, read it again. Still can’t check the little box to allow me into the app. I’m a private person so I get the need for a privacy policy. I have privacy policy for using the restroom thought it isn’t written so I don’t have a check box, but if I did have a written policy, my check box WOULD WORK! But the door would still be locked to I guess this analogy doesn’t really fit this situation. All I’m saying is that rather than sitting here writing a crappy review (get it?) I COULD be using my SONY app. Please fix this Sh!t.

by Udi Inc on 2019/06/29 01:39
The pop up the comes up In my iPhone every time I start my car is a unsafe unwelcome distraction. I have disable it in notifications and yet it still comes up every time. As you can tell it’s annoying I have tried to disable it to no avail. Why not just allow it to open in the background when connected it doesn’t need permission and a human response every time. The app does help with setting up my radio settings but other wise I wouldn’t use it.
Keeps crashing
by Isamashii on 2019/03/15 18:39
I just bought the GTX-XB5 Bluetooth speaker and you have to use this app to take advantage of all the features but when you do the app keeps crashing I can not even make it through an entire song. I am using an IPhone 6 and also an IPad mini 4 both devices have the same issues. Luckily you can still use iTunes but unfortunately you can not utilize all the features. I am optimistic that they will fix this problem in the future
Not a bad app if you know how to get around it
by audiogeeeek on 2019/05/16 02:43
I feel that most of the bad reviews are written by those that are not to technology educated. It’s not a very hard app to get around in...you are able to change the display, audio settings, music apps, and much more the from the app itself. Very easy way to fine tune the audio in my opinion plus a great way to customize its display which honestly is all you need.
Some decent instructions would help
by Bonzeye57 on 2018/12/29 00:38
Great speakers. App is isn’t too bad once you figure it out. Instructions are worthless. All I wanted was to have two SRS-XB21’s play stereo. After a couple days of frustration I figured out you had to press the ADD buttons in the back of both speakers where the power plugs in. Then the magic Speaker Add option appeared in Music Center and I was able to edit the group to play stereo. Boom. Works great.
Trash
by SuperKcross on 2019/07/13 03:41
I bought the SRS XB-32 speaker. The speaker itself is great but this app is so bad that I actually thought of returning the speaker. You need the app to adjust to eq and the lights. The app often can’t connect to the speaker and I’ve had to restart multiple times before it can connect. The app is slow and clunky. It’s a shame too because when it does work, I enjoy being able to control the speaker via my phone when it is connected to my computer. After many tries I’ve finally adjusted the eq and lights to how I want it. Hopefully I won’t have to use this app ever again.

I'm not usually the type to come type these out, but I see a lot of negative and overly critical reviews for this app. Yes, it "forgets" what you're doing if you put it in the background. However, this doesn't impede fluid operation of the speaker. Playback is never interrupted, and the app always comes back when you need it. It's not unusable in any way, people are just making mountains out of molehills.
An app that tells you how to use Bluetooth
by supergirl2000 on 2018/05/31 02:15
I know how to Bluetooth connect to devices. My soundbar linked for years then suddenly stopped working. My phone Bluetooth list claims it’s not turned on or within range. The soundbar is both on in range and set to Bluetooth as it was for years. I’ve tried reinstalling, updating, rebooting. Nothing fixes it. I’m so annoyed at this super lame app for not addressing such issues or aid in troubleshooting. Devices that don’t sync suddenly wreak of cash grab by either Sony or Apple. Like I should go buy a new soundbar or new phone when both are still totally fine.
It’s hit or miss
by lanafan43ver on 2019/08/18 19:38
Sometimes the app works and opens up the menu where you can select the illumination settings and change other settings on the device even turning it off remotely!! But other times it says it can’t connect to the speaker it’s annoying just wish it was smoother. I have to restart my iPhone 8 just to reset the app so I can change the settings again and I’m not restarting my iPhone every hour for an app.
Good for what I need it to do!
by mji71 on 2018/06/20 13:20
I have no functional issues with this app. It has met my expectations. However, I would like the ability to choose LED colors of my liking. I prefer the solid LED (what Sony has labeled as Calm) vs. flashing LED selections. For example, I would prefer to illuminate a solid dark blue, but the nearest would be Cyan (too bright). Please Sony give us more options with LED colors!!!
The APP is horrible
by WJCaruso on 2019/01/15 00:03
I have an STR-DN1080. The app worked sparingly at first but enough to be a great upgrade from our previous receiver. However, since the last update, it crashes regularly and will not allow me to control zone 2 from the app. I am actually shocked at the poor quality given the Sony’s brand reputation. The receiver is good but without ability to control it from the app, it really is sub par compared to other similarly priced (lesser known brands). I would not buy this receiver again or any other Sony product that relies on this app unless it is fixed.
Having app issues
by KayDee109 on 2018/07/16 23:28
I have a Sony X90 speaker, and it works well! As soon as I connect to the speaker it tells me to get the app! Cool. I like that I can control the lights and all but I can get the app to load all the songs I have!!! I have Apple Music so there’s no need to buy every album anymore. But I can get the songs to work through the app. It does not bother me but when you download the app it says the music will be play better through the app, but mostly every song says it can’t be played. 🤷🏾‍♂️ no use to have the app if it’s going to be little this.
Good music player
by Thichbanla on 2018/11/05 09:14
The app works well as a stand alone music player. I often listen to tracks not listed on iTunes/Spotify, and the grouping and searching for those tracks were very messy and insufficient in stock music app. The grouping of songs and albums in this app is far more better than that in the stock music app.
SRS-XB32
by Mike Hidalgo on 2020/04/16 20:57
The app works good with this speaker.
Helpful app
by Bluetooth speaker rater on 2019/01/03 01:08
I got this app a month ago and so far I have had no problems. The app lets you easily control the ENTIRE speaker from your hand. It gives many options on lighting, party mode and control of the bass. This app is very easy to control and connect the speakers. I would recommend downloading this app when you get a Bluetooth speaker.
Terms and agreements
by Criminalminds17 on 2018/10/03 04:25
Won’t allow me to accept the terms and conditions to keep using the app. The actual button that you press doesn’t check and you can’t move forward to using the app. Even when clicking a prompt to continue into another screen for more help with terms and agreements or whatever, it just changes to what I assume is the same screen, but wouldn’t know because it’s in a foreign language, and you can’t get back to the original terms and agreement page from there either.
Loses speaker
by DontLikeIt555 on 2019/09/24 00:57
Installed yesterday and worked good to control volume via iPhone when plugged into TV via mini stereo line. Today shows 2 of same speaker one needs setup the other does not. Both are non responsive. Both say can’t connect even though it’s connected and can’t delete either to redo setup. Why has this issue not been fixed? When an app gets 2 stars the company should fix It asap or the people will buy elsewhere next time. Am I correct?
Policy change box
by UzumakiLukas on 2018/06/29 12:22
After the last update the app doesn’t let you pass through its policy box because it just doesn’t click the Agree, I tried to close the app and launch it again and nothing. It used to be a really good app though!
Awful
by CameronGarriepy on 2019/04/01 16:11
Would be 0 stars if I could. Support for our receiver was ended a couple years ago, so we can never update the app or it won’t work with our model. Since the app-related functionality was part of why we chose this Sony receiver, that sucked. Even before that, the app won’t play nicely with my iOS Music app. It loops one song no matter what playback settings are selected, and will not access most of our music files no matter what I do. In short, the app is awful.
