Description
Artist's Viewfinder assists the filmmaker or still photographer in exploring different places and angles to find the optimal placement for the camera, and to second-guess compositions. By simulating real camera and lens combinations it allows you to visualize what you are going to shoot without actually setting up the camera. And it's also a great tool to train yourself to see. Handles Like Your Camera Exposure compensation. Auto-focus lock. AF confirmation beep. A Quick Control Screen for accessing frequently needed functions. Smart Function Keys. Shutter release via the Volume Up button. We designed the Mark II so that you could feel at home the moment you start working with it. And because it also saves high resolution photos, you can even use it as a regular camera. Visualize the Grand Landscape Paired with a 0.5x-class super-wide converter lens*, the Mark II becomes an indispensable tool for landscape and architecture photographers. The combination can simulate super-wide lenses up to around 16mm on the full-frame 35mm format. Or you can use it to compose super-wide stitched images. The Mark II even removes distortion present in the wide converter lens — in real time. * FOR THE LIST OF SUPPORTED CONVERTER/DEVICE COMBINATIONS PLEASE VISIT: https://www.artistsviewfinder.com/tech-specs/ When There's No Need for Color In black & white mode Artist's Viewfinder shows just the luminance information of the scene, making it easier to explore tonal structures and simulate what a black & white photograph will look like. Taking it a step further, the optional dark and neutral toolbar theme ensures that colors from the app doesn't interfere with your composition. Unprecedented Simulation Flexibility The Mark II leverages our extensive Viewfinder Camera Database, containing more than 700 still and motion picture cameras, 180 medium/large format backs and countless lenses — incorporating real lens data for ALPA, Hartblei, Hasselblad, Leica, Rodenstock, Schneider and Zeiss glass. And you can define your own cameras and lenses when you need something special for the job. Does What Optical Viewfinders Can't Even Dream Of Artist's Viewfinder stores location and simulation metadata with the pictures, allowing you to evaluate results of a location scout later on your computer. Or you can send the information off to the rest of the crew or to a rental house, right from the app. It also records a standard GPX format track log, alleviating the need for a separate logging device. Want to Learn More? To explore the complete list of features, please visit: https://www.artistsviewfinder.com/features/ Written by the author of the app, The Viewfinder Handbook is the ultimate source of information about the Mark II. Way more than a user manual, this free eBook not only walks you through the ins and outs of the app, but also provides conceptual background, insights and useful hands-on advice. Available in iPad optimized PDF format at: https://www.artistsviewfinder.com/handbook/
Worth every penny

At first I balked at the $30 price. But it seemed to do exactly what I needed and the other reviews were good so I bought it. I am extremely impressed. I use it to scout for shooting locations. I can see what different cameras look like with different lenses. It captures gps data so I can find my way back carrying just the gear I need.
Worth the price!

While it may seem expensive, this is a fantastic way to scout/preview images. It keeps getting better thru great updates and enhancements. Whether for film or digital, highly recommended.

I have found this to be an invaluable app for surveying potential images, and choosing lenses. I use it with a Canon 5D and various view camera arrangements with BetterLight backs. It has a smooth and intelligent interface which works well in the field or studio.

If you’re a tripod shooter with large and heavy cameras or just want to find the right view, this is a great tool and matches virtually any format and provides an endless string of lens sizes. Where was this 30 years ago when I was lugging my Arca Swiss and Schneider 400 mm lens across the terrain?!

Handy app. It would also be useful to be able to flip the view horizontally and upside down, especially when using large and medium format finders.
Limited and expensive
by RettnLA on 2016/12/07 16:24
This app will not allow me to view anything wider than a 35 mm. Seeing that I purchased this app to scope out what 24mm wide shots would look like for a location scouting it was useless. My battery also drained from 30% to dead in 20 minutes of using on a new iPhone 6s Plus that has not had that problem with other apps. Would like a refund

For many years I have tried to find a reasonably priced optical director’s viewfinder on the web, eBay, B&H Photo, etc. They are out there but you get what you pay for and if you want quality, versatility and accuracy, it’s expensive. Enter the Mark II Artist’s Viewfinder. With it’s elegant and easy interface and compatibility with the current iPhones and third party lenses it is the answer I have been looking for. And the price is right! Some may balk at a +$25 app, but even combined with the cost of associated iPhone cases and lens attachments, it is quite a bargain compared to the outrageously expensive optical versions. Third party lens and case makers have caught up with the iPhone 6 so “this is the one, Neo.” I have been using it for about a month now and am completely satisfied. Customer support is excellent. Highly recommended.

Really, really love this app. As a cinematographer, I, like everyone, used the most popular cinema viewfinder app for a few years. Eventually I got tired of its cumbersome and slow updates and went searching for a better app. And I'm happy to report this app is far superior. I use it daily and I think it's biggest feature is its speed and simplicity. It opens up faster than its competitor and I find myself getting the frame I need, choosing a lens, and putting my phone away quickly to frame up my real camera. Less time in the app means more time shooting. It's features also work well for the modern cinematographer. It's easy to load up multiple cameras or multiple capture formats. Shooting 2:1 aspect ratio on UHD Amira, but 2K for high speed plus black magic pocket and gopro c/d-cams? Easy! You can have all 4. Try setting that up in your other app.
Limited I Phone 6+ Support
by esmith32 on 2015/07/14 13:23
Appears to be a very useful app; however, support for the iPhone 6+ is woefully limited for wide-angle landscape photography. The required wide-angle converters are either not available for the iPhone 6+ or they are not compatible with protective 3rd party cases, sold for this phone (i.e. Olliclip 4 in 1).
Fully professional.
by cjbrownfield on 2015/03/18 17:02
This app has fully professional features, an excellent tasteful interface and seamless execution. I am one of those eclectic professional photographers who would otherwise spend a small fortune on optical viewfinders for vintage and contemporary cameras--and never really be satisfied. After this app, I have everything I ever wanted in a viewfinder, some very well-designed logging and session planning tools, and a camera function with frame lines, exposure lock and focus lock. Overall, this excellent professional app upgrades the standard iPhone camera for pro photographers, and needless to say I'm never buying an optical viewfinder again.

Despite its high price, it's really useful for previsualing a subject when using a large format/medium format camera. Although there is some inaccuracy with the coverage (Toyo View 4A II), I was able to create a custom camera anyway. In combination with the app Reciprocity Timer, I can document a shot without writing notes on a piece of paper.

This is exactly what we are looking for at our photography studio to allow the stylist to stage a product/setting prior to the photographers arrival, saving a lot of time. The only missing feature that would be a HUGE help is custom aspect ratios or a custom overlay so that we can visualize a clients crop requirements. Being able to see both the camera aspect ratio and an overlay of a custom crop size would be fantastic.

I was a huge fan of the original viewfinder app but this new version blows it away. Being able to quickly pinpoint the best compositions and camera placements immediately allowed me to produce better images in less time. This is also my favorite scouting tool. I have all of my crops including 6x17 panoramics setup as different cameras so I can easily switch between them. Having easy access to all my lens and camera configurations avoids the hassle of switching lens as I work out the best composition. By using the ipro lens super wide lens with this app I have all of my glass covered. I know exactly which lens to pull out of the bag to get the shot. For a photographer shooting mainly prime glass this is a huge help. Tech support is fantastic as well which was a bonus. One if the best features is the WA lens correction which gives you a much better representation of the final image.

Well worth the price!

I have found this to be an invaluable app for surveying potential images, and choosing lenses. I use it with a Canon 5D and various view camera arrangements with BetterLight backs. It has a smooth and intelligent interface which works well in the field or studio.
Worth the price!

While it may seem expensive, this is a fantastic way to scout/preview images. It keeps getting better thru great updates and enhancements. Whether for film or digital, highly recommended.
Indispensable

If you’re a tripod shooter with large and heavy cameras or just want to find the right view, this is a great tool and matches virtually any format and provides an endless string of lens sizes. Where was this 30 years ago when I was lugging my Arca Swiss and Schneider 400 mm lens across the terrain?!
Fantastic app.

Highly recommend it.

elegant and useful

Fully professional.

Dramatically improves my pics

Full featured and updated

Excellent product

Despite its high price, it's really useful for previsualing a subject when using a large format/medium format camera. Although there is some inaccuracy with the coverage (Toyo View 4A II), I was able to create a custom camera anyway. In combination with the app Reciprocity Timer, I can document a shot without writing notes on a piece of paper.
Nearly Perfect

This is exactly what we are looking for at our photography studio to allow the stylist to stage a product/setting prior to the photographers arrival, saving a lot of time. The only missing feature that would be a HUGE help is custom aspect ratios or a custom overlay so that we can visualize a clients crop requirements. Being able to see both the camera aspect ratio and an overlay of a custom crop size would be fantastic.
Perfect companion

When shooting with a large format view camera, it helps immensely to get scouting shots with my I phone & Artist's viewfinder Pro so I know exactly where to set up. Using Real Lens simulation makes the selection process even more precise.
Indispensable Tool

I am no professional photographer, although I strive to attain professional results. This app is so valuable to me when I'm scouting to help decide which focal length lenses I'll need. I can't live without this.
Handy!
by RV 8 on 2015/08/30 02:32
I use a Leica M240 so prime lenses are a fixture. Handy for a quick look at composition. Removes a lot of guess work.
Flip option
by Light Stevo on 2017/02/09 09:26
Handy app. It would also be useful to be able to flip the view horizontally and upside down, especially when using large and medium format finders.
Tool for Architectural Photographers

I am using the MIIAV with the ALPA ACAM converter and it really works providing me with a useful tool to scout projects adjusting my compositions by simulating to image to match each of my lenses and camera back combinations.
Love this app

This app is very useful, love it
