Choosing music from Landscape
by Matdotcom2000 on 2020/01/08 10:22
Choosing music in Landscape!!!!!! Landscape!!!!! Landscape!!!! Landscape!!!! I have owned and used this for years and I would love to choose songs from Landscape MODE!!! Please! Turning the table and turning it back to choose songs is a pain! Landscape Mode!!!
Was 5 stars until ads
by sandimascharvel on 2019/12/15 14:42
What is going on here?? Please remove the ads for the customers who already paid $9.99. No way to contact support?? UPDATE 12-15-2019: iOS 12.4.3 and 12.4.4 on iPhone 6/6 Plus will not connect DAC’s! Don’t update your iOS! Apple, please fix this! Below is the previous 5-star review before the ads. Excellent sound quality. Bought the HD Player pack as well for my hi res FLAC files. I now use an AudioQuest Dragonfly Red USB DAC instead of the headphone jack. Sounds much better that way. The app’s real-time DSD conversion feature is great for even better sound. My CD rips loaded onto the phone through iTunes are there automatically and sound great. Easy to drag my FLAC files through iTunes into the app. The DAC lights up with the right colors so I know the app is sending the right sample rates. Album artwork is large and unobstructed and the black background is nice. The only glitch is sometimes the sound cuts out for a second when playing the FLAC hi-res files. I believe others have said this is an iPhone issue and not an issue with the app. Just an FYI: If you rip your CD’s, make sure to do lossless 44.1/16 rips if you want the best sound. I used the AIFF format. Initially I had ripped to 48/24 FLAC for my computer then converted to AIFF 48/24 for my phone. Some say 48/24 is somehow better, some say no difference except you take up more space, and others say you introduce undesired results with the sound quality. I can tell you that the last two are absolutely true, so stick to 44.1/16 for that CD collection.
Middle management strikes again
by llihgdots on 2019/11/29 02:25
This is a solid piece of software ruined by idiotic middle management who, looking for a feather in their cap, decide to add ads and ruin an otherwise perfectly useful product. I know the engineers didn’t do that. I, like many people, hate ads and will not tolerate them. I would be willing to pay a few dollars to remove them. But $10 in an in-app purchase that can’t even be shared? Absolutely not. Onkyo burns good will treating their customers this way while the original app had built good will. I own Onkyo hardware but when a company “pulls a Sony” I not only refuse to give them my money with future products, I become an evangelist against them. So, middle managers, do the math: you have received no payment from me, I block ads, and now I refuse to buy your product and persuade others not to as well. That looks like a loss to me.
No Gapless Playback????
by arg245 on 2019/11/10 21:55
Seriously guys, at $10 for the full app you’d think this app would have that BASIC capability, but it doesn’t. Ruins the experience for some of my best music. It’s a shame, because in every other respect, this is a fine app. But no gapless? Disappointed!
Excellent, but please update for iOS 13 and add CarPlay
by slbrownhk on 2019/10/04 01:54
10/3/19: please update to provide support for iOS 13. Add support for CarPlay and iPad, too. This is the BEST app for playing high resolution music; please please please make it easier to use in the car and on iPad! 11/5/18: still no iPad UI. Also, needs to be updated for iPhone XS Max compatibility. The artist/album/playlist buttons at the bottom of the screen are now inaccessible. 11/22/17: strange that Onkyo updates the UI but didn’t include iPhone X support. 11/21/17: Still no UI for iPad, and I continue to have problems with the app playing music when I shut off my car’s Bluetooth connection. No other app I have does this. I love it when this app works right, but Onkyo needs to step up its support for iPads and fix the weird Bluetooth issues. 12/30/16: All my Bluetooth problems have been solved with this latest release, and everything is working beautifully. Thanks, Onkyo! 11/16/16: HF Player has become even buggier for me after the iOS 10 app update. Not only has the problem when switching outputs not been solved, but now if I have the app open and paused and then switch to a Bluetooth output, tracks play back at a reduced speed. Closing and reopening the app is the only way to stop this, which is not Particularly safe when I'm driving. Other apps I have do not do this, so I believe this is an HF Player problem. Workarounds such as turning off handoff and deleting and then repairing my phone with my car and my headphones have also proved unsuccessful. I love this app, but please help, Onkyo! -------------------- Advances tracks when I switch between outputs (Bluetooth headphones to car Bluetooth, for example) or pause playback, watch a video in Safari, then restart HF Player playback. This has only happened since I upgraded to iOS 10. Please fix, Onkyo!
Great when it works.
by kabdisbdbd on 2019/08/23 13:44
I bought some FLAC and dowanloded it to my phone now trying to download to my iPad and the app just won’t download it. Sits at 0% the entire time
Please update

Why the ads???
by ricesinice on 2019/05/03 19:35
I like the app and especially the parametric eq but the ads are driving me away!
I feel ripped off. Paid and can’t share the app.
by Nicks stuff on 2019/04/08 18:41
Great music player- dirty merchants. Got duped into to giving Apple 10 bucks to “share” this app AND YOU CANNOT! Apple is all about the money. F Apple.
Replay Gain needed
by ripncny on 2019/03/27 00:04
This is the best sounding music player I have tried and also the crossfade is also very good compared to other players. I would give this 5 stars if it had replay gain. $5 would be fair just for that feature alone.
Bumper sticker on a ferrari
by unarmed apple on 2019/03/21 21:11
Clear, simple, gorgeous app — then they slapped cheap ads near the bottom, and want $10 to remove ‘em lol
Latest update ruined it
by SD5555X on 2019/03/11 06:37
This is hands down the best sounding music player for iOS; however, since the last update, there is no way to navigate back to the list of songs on an album or to the main menu of all your music. You have to close the app and reopen every time you want to go back and see all the songs on an album or play a different album - so annoying! At least I don’t have the banner ad or the mini music player everyone’s complaining about, which is why I’m afraid to delete the app and download it again. Please fix this ridiculous issue!
Great
by Akdjrodja on 2019/03/11 04:27

Wait, wait, wait
by dadosam on 2019/03/07 11:56
If you like to watch an app load, and load, and load, and never finish; and like little spinning wheels, this is your app. If you like to play music, pick something else.
No proper updates
by Macsavvy21 on 2019/02/16 16:21
Being only app in the market doe not mean that you never update features. 1) can not be used in landscape mode ... why? 2) excruciatingly painful way to create playlist...seriously ... i used this to play dsd files, after frustraing years of waiting of fixes i’ve moved on to protable hd player, i’ll never buy onkyo player only that reason. You guys need to put your act together.....

Was great, not any longer
by yet another frequent flyer on 2018/12/17 01:46
Since a recent version update, HF Player no longer syncs to the iTunes library. Online product support has no helpful information. Shame, I really liked this product, but it has lost a key feature.
Love this app! Only one thing will make it better.
by NemesisIV on 2018/12/03 01:22
I love this app! I only wish it had the option to show the bitrate of the file. Like 24bit/96khz. I have many hdcds that we’re converted into flac using dBpoweramp and the hdcd codec. I would like to be able to see what bitrate the file is playing so I know its playing correctly! Thanks for such a great product!
Great app with no support whatsoever
by td351 on 2018/11/28 14:58
I love this app for its functionality and ability to play hi res music and have purchased it for the ability to play dsd files. It’s easy to use and sounds great, but it’s causing my iPhone backups to be huge because it is backing up my hi res music files when doing an iPhone backup. Some apps allow you to select whether they are included in the backups, but there is no such selection with this app so I have ended up having to buy more iCloud storage to accommodate these huge backups that this app is causing. Emailing support has been useless so far because they have offered no troubleshooting and their only suggestion is to contact Apple. I don’t believe this to be an IOS issue because no other music apps that I have tried have caused these huge backups even with hi res audio added to them. Bottom line is that so far there has been no support for an app that has been paid for. Beware
Fix it!
by Kedeia on 2018/11/14 09:12
iOS12 has screwed up what was a great player. First I couldn’t see the artist, playlist, song options at the bottom. Now with the update that cured that, there is this annoying fizzy pop in the right channel over and over. I’ve checked my headphones across three other devices using three other players and it wasn’t there, so it’s definitely from this player. Please fix it!
Back to being my favorite app!
by RGB9999 on 2018/11/14 04:08
A few days ago I left a 3* review stating there was a major display error on iphone X in which none of the lower row buttons could be accessed. Seems like devs either took note or were aware of the situation as the small update that just came out fixed the issue. Really happy with the quick fix. Now if only the playlist creator was more intuitive the app would be even better!
Updated review...
by RevRevrRevRevReview on 2018/11/13 22:48
App is very good. However, the new ios software upgrade to 12.1 isn’t compatible. The bottom selection of Songs/Playlists/Albums etc . is covered up by advertising and unaccessible. Contacted Onkyo many times but never responded. Unfortunate - seems like easy fix. ******Back to normal now. Took little while but appreciate the fix Onkyo.*******
Thank You Onkyo! Five Star Quality!
by America's App Advisor on 2018/11/13 13:33
If you aren’t aware - the latest update release note roughly translated to English means: made correct = corrected issues = fixed some bugs. Take a look at your most recently updated Apps, you’ll probably see something like this; ‘we corrected issue xyz and fixed some bugs’ Well, Onkyo is telling you the same thing, got it? Good. Now, I really don’t understand what all the fuss is about. I’ve never seen a single ad*, no sign of a mini-player, the UI is intuitive and my music library is organized and looks very sharp. Listening to your music precisely how you like is what this App is all about as the equalizer gives you an infinite amount of adjustment. So tweak it to your liking. side notes - • probably no ads because I’m on a VPN • excellent equalizer presets with the added perk of listening to presets from top musical artists • it makes perfect sense to me • do you know how to properly use your iDevice • don’t be afraid to explore the App I’ve been on an iPhone user since the first day the original iPhone was released for sale in the United States back in June 2007 or so. I think I’m on my twelfth iPhone or thereabout and I’ve owned more than 4000 Apps over the past 11 years or so.
Display Flaw with iPhone X
by jdmcderm on 2018/11/13 01:36
I too have an iPhone X and normally love this app. Recently, the now playing banner covers the navigation buttons at the bottom of the screen, making it impossible to toggle between views for album, song, playlist, etc. please fix ASAP and restore a great app!
Reposition the mini player.
by Boogie66 on 2018/11/11 21:21
I recently upgraded to the HF version of this app and while I was glad that the ads were removed, I was flabbergasted that the mini player now covers half of the control buttons for the artist and albums functions. Now it takes multiple tries to get the buttons to work and it’s really frustrating! I like the mini player, but please move it up a little so it doesn’t cover the function buttons.
Can’t access playlists after last update

After last update I can no longer switch between playlist, artist, and album lists. The album playing tab is in the way.

by DLNA USER on 2018/11/09 03:27
This application was great with all my iPhones but after the upgrade to release 2.9.0 the mini player cover on the bottom the menu “songs”,”album” and you can’t select them on my Iphone X. Probably a display size problem Please solve it I love this app!!!
UI FIX NEEDED
by 肖承诚 on 2018/11/09 01:39
Progress bar overlaps with bottom UIs on IOS12. Very good app for audiophile, but this bug is very annoying.
Mini-player overlaps category selections
by GateGuruFanAgain on 2018/11/06 21:16
I have really enjoyed this app for years now. I just upgraded to the iPhone XR and now the mini-player overlaps the Artist/Songs/Albums category selectors at the bottom. If I hit the category I want enough times, it does finally go to that category, but sometimes it is as many as 10-12 times before it happens and it is inconsistent. Please re-evaluate the location of the mini-player (which may not be necessary anyway!) or eliminate it. I am hopeful the developers will address this. Eliminate this and I’ll upgrade my rating to 5 star.
The last update
by Weaktovisuals on 2018/10/23 03:07
It seems that an otherwise great app has fallen to a mild pollution of ads from yes you guessed it Google. Not enough their fingers are into everything but now your playing music on your fav music player has to have their crap in your face where songs were listed by the app. Was great now eh. Sorry Onkyo ya dropped the ball on this one and a few others recently with hitching up to these clowns.
Plays but not without faults (iPhone)
by dubulup on 2018/09/13 14:50
Cool it plays hi-res files but distracting when it cuts out for a second during playback. Needs an optimization program to cut out the unnecessary phone processes during playback
Remove Ads for a reasonable price!
by Alireza A. on 2018/09/10 13:26
This app used to be free for iPod (basic option) and we had to pay $10 to play hi-res files. Now the Ads has been added to the free app and no way to remove it, except upgrading to hi-res that I don’t need, and paying $10 to just remove the Ads (for my needs) doesn’t make sense at all! Please remove the Ads from the free app as before or at least ask a reasonable price to do that or I have to say goodbye and leave 👋.

Version 2.9.0
by Kenshinco on 2018/09/03 05:50
This version can not read the song album art correctly. When I leave the song album name blank, the app won't display the picture. When I change multiple song to the same album name, the app will display only 1 picture for all of the song, even though the songs id tag include different picture. The previous version were working fine with album art. Please correct this issue. Thanks
Slightly confusing, but good overall.
by jabman1 on 2018/09/01 14:26
Sounds and works great, but I sometimes lose my place in the UI and it takes me a moment to get back to where I was.
Just one thing missing
by jh633 on 2018/08/23 05:33
We all are using this app to listen to hires files like Flac etc in 24/96 and above and for that we use an external DAC. I use this on my iPad and iPhone 7+ and connect dragonfly red as dac at the lightning port. The this missing here is the capability to rotate the screen. It is frustrating to have the screen laying on the side cause the bottom of device is busy with the dac. Otherwise fantastic app. Cheers! JH
great audio app for music lovers
by Mr. Iowa on 2018/08/16 20:52
works well & looks great. note to onkyo: Please add support for ios dark mode. the onkyo app displays art work better than other apps (sharper). i don’t see the advantage of hi res audio on a ios device (onkyo’s paid version of app). but i’m tempted to try it... i’m glad they’re making sweet audio app to replace the stock app.
A good app needing a tweak
by MI State fan on 2018/07/26 05:21
Overall I like the app. It does enhance the listening experience. The one major issue I have with it, is the “assumed” navigation of playback mode. The experience could be improved a lot by putting the controls for play straight through or shuffle on the initial screen or use a simple pull down window.
Don't buy it if you have the TEAC HD music player app.
by ePubonOS/x on 2018/06/26 10:59
UPDATE and RECOMMENDATION I compared the current version of this app and the TEAC app. It is worth the $10.00 purchase price to have the HD upgrade in either this app or the TEAC app to play FLAC, DSD, or HD music with a sample rate greater than 96KHz but don’t buy both. REVIEW The application looks, acts, and sounds like the TEAC application. It has the same quirks also. High definition PCM files work. I use aiff and alac and FLAC and DSD files with no trouble through an external desktop and a portable USB headphone amp. Both use the Apple camera connector kit (CCK). Use the USB 3.0 CCK and you may not need a powered USB hub. This is an iPhone only application so it does not work as well on an iPad. It will not reorient itself to match your screen's position. This is cumbersome if you are trying to use your iPad in landscape and you are using the Lightning port to feed an external DAC or amplifier. It does have a landscape mode but it shows the equalizer. I turned off the equalizer to stop this. It will play DSD files if your DAC supports them but be careful about how your DAC plays them. My DAC does play them using DoP or it can play DSD music converted to PCM. Be careful with how you set up playing DSD files in the application's preferences. The application will not stream music files from a wireless drive or a file server, like AirPort Extreme. Your music must be loaded under the Onkyo player like most iOS apps. Use compressed music in Apple Lossless (ALAC) or FLAC. Even when compressed, a small music library will be over 50 gigabytes. Try an application FileBrowser, FileExplorer, or Documents (paid, full versions). You can stream HD music files from a server or from a WiFi drive. HD music is sent to your external DAC at the proper sample rate. This app is worth the price since it plays HD and DSD music to your external DAC and headphone amplifier. The bad part is that you need a large machine to hold the music files within the app. Before you spend the cost for the HD upgrade play some CD quality music. Note how the information about the song displays. Onkyo displays the original sample rate and the sample rate that the external DAC is using directly underneath the album art. TEAC uses the information button to show this. Onkyo uses the information button slightly differently. ITunes does not play FLAC or DSD music directly. IOS seems to support FLAC unofficially now in 3rd party applications. Onkyo and TEAC play FLAC and DSD and have done so for a few years before iOS 11. If you have FLAC and DSD then you need a good third party music player. Either app is worth having just to play this music. Some file browser apps will also play FLAC files from within themselves AND they will stream from a wireless drive. But you may not NEED this app. 1. iTunes is “bit perfect”. I expect that Apple would make the Music app in iOS also bit perfect. 2. iTunes plays HD music to the highest sample rate that the internal DAC or an external DAC will support but it doesn’t change the sample rate automatically. The Music app in iOS changes the sample to match the music automatically. My new DAC supports 192KHz and Onkyo and TEAC support it. The Music app in iOS is quirky. It supports 96KHz music from the iPad onboard library directly but none higher because the iTunes synchronization function will not load music over 96KHz. However the Music app on iOS will play HD music hereafter than 96KHz from an iTunes library using Home Sharing.
Mixed feelings
by Dizzy Lizzie - Cornfield USA on 2018/06/18 02:21
There in no doubt this is one awesome music player. I am by no means an audiophile, but I do appreciate quality audio equipment — that includes apps that faithfully reproduce my music. HOWEVER, the last two changes are just downright annoying. A banner ad at the bottom?! Okay, so it does not appear on the main player screen, but it does take up space. This last update introduced a mini-player. Is that really necessary? That in addition to the banner ad really takes up some serious room. Even on an iPhone 6s. Does Onkyo really need to generate paltry revenue from ads for movies and soda pop? I suppose I could pay to have the ad removed, but that is a lot to pay since I do not need the added features to play high definition audio. Since this is a free app I will put up with it. But I would be willing to pay a dollar or two to get rid of the ad without having to pay the price asked for to unlock the high end features. Other than that it is a very nice and useful app.
Good app, but can be better
by Ray0145 on 2018/06/14 14:49
I love this app, it works well with my PHA-3. But I really hope the UI can be more frendly.
Awesome. Just awesome.
by Drew_2006 on 2018/06/12 14:28
I’ll leave this short and sweet. There are some reviewers who have complained of a “serious” navigation flaw. I don’t understand how it’s “serious”, you just have to navigate back to your album page after you’ve CLOSED the app, which, to me, isn’t a “problem” at all. Bottom line: the sound quality is unparalleled in iOS, flat-out. Pay the $10 for the “hi-fi” playback for FLAC files, listen away, and never look back. I’ll never purchase another music player for iOS, because this one is that good.
Don't upgrade to 2.8
by Casey stencil on 2018/05/08 18:26
Accidentally upgraded to 2.8 and now there's a fugly ad that covers a row of album names. Back up your install, so you can roll back if you screw up. That said, aside from the ad, it's a decent app. It's a shame they don't make an iPad version
Ads?!
by MashaT22 on 2018/04/27 02:20
Why should people who’ve already owned this app be subjected to ads? This doesn’t bode well with loyal users who’ve made your app popular. I’d understand showing ads to new users and requesting an optional IAP to get rid of them — but it’s truly unfair and a money grab to do this to those of us who’ve had your app for years. I’m considering deleting your app for this reason alone even though it’s a stellar app — there are plenty of amazing HiFi iOS app options that don’t impose ads on current users. Please rethink this decision ASAP or else you’ll likely lose many users.
Update inserted advertisements

This was my favorite music player app, despite the odd crash every so often. Then I opened it up and found that they’d started placing ads in it. Immediately deleted.
Will Do Until Official Apple Support
by sandifop on 2018/03/29 13:04
Onkyo works well if one has audio files not (yet?) supported by Apple. It handles everything I’ve thrown at it (mostly FLAC, which Apple does not support and likely won’t) I was loving VOX, still do, but I do not like “subscriptions;” a model they have adopted for many essential features. I would rather follow the Onkyo model, which is pay once to access “High Definition” encodings. There are some things about Onkyo that bother me, but it is the dark UI design and my inability to see its on-screen widgets without my glasses. But that’s my problem so I won’t ding the app. Good enough to call good stuff. Enjoy the show.
FEATURE REQUEST
by dsds74 on 2018/03/05 15:28
This app made my Bluetooth headphones usable for music. The EQ customization is awesome. I just with I could ADJUST OVERALL GAIN of the audio signal. Even at the lowest volume, it’s too loud on my headphones. I know I can push the entire EQ curve down to reduce overall volume, but the curve is already bottomed out and I still need lower gain.
Very Good! Close to Excellent
by Trebled75 on 2018/02/24 02:47
Currently using this app to output Hi Res & regular music bought from Apple through an iPhone X to my Sony RSX GS9 Car Receiver. Sound quality has been excellent,The Sony unit require decent amount of tuning and time alignmentfor it to sounds it’s best. Most times when I first enter my vehicle, the upsampling feature doesn’t always lock on to the maximum upsampling rate of DSD 5.6MHZ, sometimes I have to close the app and reopen it for it to detect the maximum upsampling rate. An anoying issue has also developed in the newly release version of the app, where if I am sitting and listing to music in the car and I close the app to send it in the back ground so I can type a text message while listening, that typing would completely stop the music with each key press, so that means no typing and listening at the same time. Also I started buying and downloading music from the Onkyo website, to future-proof the music I buy, I buy the version with MQA, when available, with the hopes that Onkyo will add that feature to the app very soon, so we we can take advantage of higher quality sound.
Add support for iPad and more earphones
by Coming2USA on 2018/02/21 09:51
The UI of current version for iPad is terrible, was wondering if you can fit iPad large screen for better file management and operations. Also, only Apple and your earphones are supported, is it possible to add more, such as Sony? Thanks!
Great when it works
by Turnathought on 2018/01/18 17:33
Unstable in ios 11+, often requiring a reboot of iPhone X. The eq is unparalleled but difficult to use as the size of even the zoomed-in landscape view is small compared with one’s finger when trying to set an eq point. It would be a great improvement to allow direct text input of frequency and db offset, either on the ios device and/or import an eq text file. Album view in playlists would be a great help, allowing easy retrieval of whole albums when one has created a playlist in iTunes with just hi-res audio files. That being said, the sound quality is great.
Can’t figure out how to shuffle a playlist

The sound from this app is amazing and transfer from itunes was a breeze Interface is s bit clunky but you get used to it Major down side is for the life of me I cannot figure out how to shuffle a playlist ; if that were possible this would be a ‘5’

Great app, but it could be an Epic app if we could cast the music over our home Wifi via Google Chromecast. This is my only complaint, thus the deduction of one star. Hopefully this can happen in the near future. :-)

Ruined with iTunes 12.7

No "apps" feature in iTunes now makes it a colossal pain in the butt to add songs. Suddenly a big waste! A fantastic experience ruined...do NOT update iTunes!

First I would like say this app improved the sound through Air Pods. I was awesome! However, I grew frustrated at the effort one has to add music the politics of DRM free I realized it was not worth it!

This is what Apple should have done with their Music app
by Miketikasingh on 2017/07/04 17:48
The developers have done an amazing job. I was skeptical about the value of upsampling the sound; I figured if it's already downgraded to 256 kb/second, the damage has already been done. I am very happy to be mostly wrong in this case. I'm sure I'm going to be buying the HD upgrade soon, so that I can see how well this handles actual HD files, since it does a great job on lower bitrate files, even without the use of the equalizer. I was just looking for a replacement for the Denon Audio app, which appears to be a bit of an off for now, I'm glad I found this as a replacement. Apple's own aggravating music app is no match for this. The only thing that I would change about this app would be to turn up the sensitivity of the touch screen when adjusting the equalizer. It only seems to pick up that you're pressing on one of the handles when you start moving it. So sometimes you end up tapping more than once and end up creating additional handles that you don't need. This, however is something I can live with, since it's just a question of realizing what the app is doing and remembering it for the next time. A fantastic thing that I discovered was that the equalizer scale can be expanded or reduced by pinching outward or inward as necessary giving you more or less resolution as you need. A nice touch. Thumbs up to the Onkyo Corporation for this app!
Almost perfect..

Could be great - crashes on end of song with lock screen active
by cjet55 on 2017/05/05 18:30
Has some great features. Air drop sync of .flac files is awesome! Why can't I do that with Apples Music app? When it's playing, it sounds great! But Onkyo HF Player has some bugs with current iOS. Worst is the hanging between songs. It just freezes up and clicks. Have to force quit the app. This limits it to long programs only, and force quit after each play. The UI also was designed for the classic 4" phones so does not look great on today's pluses. That's a minor quibble compared to the hanging crashes. Please update this app and fix the crashes. I want to love it! **** I was excited to get an update a couple weeks ago! Unfortunately, I'm still getting a hard crash if it's running a playlist with the lock screen active. It comes to end of a Flac song and does a "looping click" until I force quit the app. It doesn't seem to do this when the phone is unlocked and the app is in the foreground. Keep trying! Thanks.
Great Player, Okay Interface
by Nite_Mann on 2017/04/20 08:02
HF Player and its features like EQ, Upsampling, and ability to play FLAC really makes it amazing. However, the UI and interface could use some work. For example, when queueing a song to listen to next, the queued song will skip over if you are on shuffle.
Great
by ThatJoeB on 2017/04/19 21:30
I don't understand the ire directed at this app in other reviews based on what seem to me to be quite minor technical flaws. Bugs happen: Write to the devs and help them diagnose and improve the issue. Here's what others need to know: This app can use your existing iTunes library, picks up playlists (etc) flawlessly, and you don't have to do anything extra to manage your music (unless you want to). And your music will sound better right away. You can also tune the sound (with preset or custom equalizer settings) to suit your preferences and your particular headphones. And for all this, Onkyo charges you the sum of "0" - for the basic version anyway. Amazing.
Good, but c'mon with the fades already
by Zap B. on 2017/04/19 11:44
I've been using this app for my music for a while now. If nothing else, the inclusion of a 11-band 64 bit equalizer makes this app an improvement over the stock music app. But Onkyo, for crying out loud please let us toggle the artificial fades at the song transitions!! I really dislike having my favorite songs suddenly fade out where I know there is no fade. A simple toggle would really help here..
In app purchase worth the $10. Best player for iPad
by The Veal on 2017/04/06 02:56
I can't speak to the equalizer; I don't use it. However, the in app purchase of the player is a great value. The best player I've found for my iPad. Smoothed out the highs, opened up the mids and has decent low end performance. As close to high-end sound I've heard on an IOS device. Get this app! Associated equipment: iPad Pro 12.9" Apple camera kit AudioQuest Dragonfly Red Fido Mont Blanc portable amp Focal Elear headphones
Great app, please update
by benjolmes on 2017/03/02 22:49
I paid for the HD player functionality then realized that there is no iPad (Pro) version!!! So I'll have to pay for another solution to get a hi res flac player for that.... :( Three stars for now, five when you update the basic GUI and make an iPad version... Thanks!
The ugly duckling that could.
by John1911 on 2017/02/24 18:59
Using it with Audioquest Dragonfly black 1.5. Plays 24/96 flac perfectly. The UX is very dated, but it works perfectly fine. Would give 5 stars if it can import from a usb drive attached via the camera connection kit.
An excellent DAP app in need of a facelift
by Beau Cauchemar on 2017/01/28 23:30
I've auditioned quite a few player apps as my primary headphone listening source is my iPhone paired with a Cozoy Astrapi DAC, and this app offers the best balance of excellent sound, robust EQ (waveform playing behind it helps pinpoint frequency areas in tracks) with ability to save/name, a very familiar/straight-forward interface, and plenty of output options. The one thing that would make this app perfect would be a aesthetic upgrade as this app still uses a pre-6/6S/7 resolution and an overall very dated look. Definitely not something that keeps me from using the app, however, I feel like I would appreciate it more if it looked a bit more up-to-date (not to mention appealing to more potential users given the slick-looking competition.)
Game Changer!
by PreeminentPeace on 2017/01/18 08:20
This is by far the best $10 I have ever spent. It's an absolute "game changer" to have a portable solution to upconvert my 44.1khz flac collection to a 5.6mhz dop dsd. This app combined with my iPhone 7 plus and chord mojo is a strong competitor for any dap on the market and will be my portable audio solution for a longtime to come. Thank you for making such a phenomenal product and thank you chord mojo's manual for sending me here!

ONKYO RULZ!

Awesome sound
by quakerlb45 on 2016/12/27 12:32
I use the app with my Audioquest Firefly Red and AKG K3003i in ear monitors. The combination of the three gives simply stunning sound from an iPhone. I am listening to a lot of old music all over again and hearing details that I've never heard before. Obviously the right hardware plays a role in this but the app enables the true bit perfect playback to get the most out of the hardware.
Totally unusable
by jlykos on 2016/12/26 23:59
Onkyo created the best app for playing high resolution music and has now made it totally unusable to play anything. When playing music on my iPhone 6s, HF Player automatically defaults to 48 khz playback, meaning that if you try to play 44.1 khz music on it, the playback is slowed down and sounds terrible. In previous versions, you could close the app on the phone and then re-start the app to play native 44.1 khz content, but you cannot with this latest update on December 26. The app will only play at 48 khz, regardless of what setting the upsampling mode is on or sampling rate of the file. This is a critical error and has made the app completely unusable for any purpose. Onkyo needs to fix this problem immediately to restore functionality to the app and allow users to play music at the sample rate on which it was intended.

Awesome flac player
Unique App worth a try.
by Rtee1 on 2016/11/24 18:57
Immediately interesting. Nice delivery of various eq options to enhance various sound aspects and broaden, restrict or tighten sound in ways that reflect particular styles of famous artists music. Suggestion: Mark selections of eq with changed color or something, since folks aren't inclined to memorize all the wording in style descriptions and so when they return to the eq interface they can see which one they selected. I recommend this app.
Skips When I Pause & Resume
by UnBarrierAudio on 2016/11/23 05:22
Ever Since I Updated My Iphone To ios 10 This Player Has Had A Bug Where If I Pause A Song, Then Resume, It Will Skip To The Next Track Or Double Skip Over. This Is Annoying To The Fact That I Have Tried Over 30 Different FREE Music Apps, But This Has The Best Soun Quality, ( For Being Free ) Since The Update I Thought This Would Fix This Bug, Nope.... IDK If Any1 Is Having This Issue, But It's An Annoying Bug.
I love this app, but there is a new bug
by wills649 on 2016/11/16 20:26
Love this app but there have been bugs while trying to use it via Bluetooth in the car. The latest one is that it plays tracks a little too slowly. Like playing a 45rpm record on 33rpm speed. I would guess tracks are being played 5% too slow from my iPhone 6s Plus. If I kill the app and re-launch it will play correct speed, but the next time I'm in the car it plays tracks too slowly again.
Best HiFi Player for iOS!
by Im Wild Rain on 2016/11/09 17:53

Excellent sound, but glitchy Bluetooth
by S. Alvarez on 2016/11/04 22:00
This player produces an amazing sound quality, but Bluetooth is glitchy. It didn't use to be, but it hasn't been updated in a long time, and it doesn't work well in iOS 10. When I get in the car and turn on the stereo, once it connects it doesn't resume playing where I left off, it skips to the next song, or sometimes even two songs. I still use it because nothing beats its sound quality.
Best equalizer in the App Store.
by IvanEM on 2016/08/14 16:45
This is, in my opinion, the best EQ app in the App Store by far. The amount of tweaking and option is amazing and will make your listening experience way better. Download it, play with the EQ and enjoy.
Love the Onkyo HF player
by SteveofStonehenge on 2016/07/26 17:04
This app really gets the job done. I am using it with a DragonFly Red external DAC. My HD music sounds great and now I can take it with me. The only thing negative I will say is about playlist. Creation of a playlist is difficult. If you want to add only one song to a playlist from an album you nee to add the entire album then go back and delete the songs you don't want on edit screen. I suggest an app for your Mac/PC similar to iTunes to manage music and edit/create playlist.
Significant Improvement over Stock!
by Gianni F. on 2016/07/22 12:23
I was highly skeptical -- I mean, digital music is digital music, right? WRONG Testing back-to-back against the stock music app consistently revealed a much smoother, more detailed sound -- in comparison, the stock app, on the same files just sounds crunchy and is missing a lot of detail. So yeah, it's worth the free price. And if you want, you can pay up for hi res capabilities (must use an external DAC, though). Despite a weak UI, the sound quality alone vaults this app to 5-star territory.
Almost there...
by firefox2501 on 2016/07/02 19:37
After using this app for about a week, I find that while over all it is pretty darn good, it is missing a few features that in my mind would make it perfect. But overall I do like this app and it works beautifully with my external DAC/headphone amp. First of all, I didn't have any problems copying my FLAC files to the iPhone using iTunes. Not sure why other reviewers had issues with this. But the two features I would love to see are: - Sort by album artist in the HD collection. This is available for the "iPod" collection, so I was very surprised to not see it for the HD collection. - "Consume" - automatically removing songs from the playlist once they finish playing. This is even more needed since you have to manually remove each song from the playlist unless you replace the whole playlist with another album. There is no "Clear Playlist" button either.
my personal recommendation

I've never heard my music in such precise quality with such detailed equalizer.
Beware

Please remove the ADs from the free app as before or at least ask a reasonable price to do that or I have to say goodbye and leave 👋.

I would like to be able to see what bitrate the file is playing so I know its playing correctly! Thanks for such a great product!

Ads?!
by MashaT22 on 2018/04/27 02:20
Why should people who’ve already owned this app be subjected to ads? This doesn’t bode well with loyal users who’ve made your app popular. I’d understand showing ads to new users and requesting an optional IAP to get rid of them — but it’s truly unfair and a money grab to do this to those of us who’ve had your app for years. I’m considering deleting your app for this reason alone even though it’s a stellar app — there are plenty of amazing HiFi iOS app options that don’t impose ads on current users. Please rethink this decision ASAP or else you’ll likely lose many users.
Can’t figure out how to shuffle a playlist
by Gp123456zxc on 2017/12/21 20:51
The sound from this app is amazing and transfer from itunes was a breeze Interface is s bit clunky but you get used to it Major down side is for the life of me I cannot figure out how to shuffle a playlist ; if that were possible this would be a ‘5’
A good app needing a tweak
by MI State fan on 2018/07/26 05:21
Overall I like the app. It does enhance the listening experience. The one major issue I have with it, is the “assumed” navigation of playback mode. The experience could be improved a lot by putting the controls for play straight through or shuffle on the initial screen or use a simple pull down window.
Switched over from EQu
by rallycar27 on 2019/02/05 15:05
Had been using equ for years. This app is a huge improvement and the price is right :) Overall good interface and really like that the app is currently maintained.
Fix it!
by Kedeia on 2018/11/14 09:12
iOS12 has screwed up what was a great player.
Choosing music from Landscape
by Matdotcom2000 on 2020/01/08 10:22
Choosing music in Landscape!!!!!! Landscape!!!!! Landscape!!!! Landscape!!!! I have owned and used this for years and I would love to choose songs from Landscape MODE!!! Please! Turning the table and turning it back to choose songs is a pain! Landscape Mode!!!
Replay Gain needed
by ripncny on 2019/03/27 00:04
This is the best sounding music player I have tried and also the crossfade is also very good compared to other players. I would give this 5 stars if it had replay gain. $5 would be fair just for that feature alone.
Slightly confusing, but good overall.
by jabman1 on 2018/09/01 14:26
Sounds and works great, but I sometimes lose my place in the UI and it takes me a moment to get back to where I was.
Great
by zerreitug.cire.e on 2017/09/24 23:03
Great app, but it could be an Epic app if we could cast the music over our home Wifi via Google Chromecast. This is my only complaint, thus the deduction of one star. Hopefully this can happen in the near future. :-)
Deleted it
by leland on 2017/09/10 17:20
First I would like say this app improved the sound through Air Pods. I was awesome! However, I grew frustrated at the effort one has to add music the politics of DRM free I realized it was not worth it!
Thanks!
UI Bug
by Gyjrjfkgrhtjdyh on 2018/11/10 05:28
Play/pause bar covering songs tab. At least make it launch on the songs tab by default on launch.
Not Working DSD Conversion
by Sleepydoodle32 on 2017/10/28 19:37
For some reason it seems like this feature is not working and the output is always PCM no matter what I do it is still PCM and not DoP and yes i bought the HD Pack and connected it to my DAC HA200 and still no luck.
Great when it works.
by kabdisbdbd on 2019/08/23 13:44
I bought some FLAC and dowanloded it to my phone now trying to download to my iPad and the app just won’t download it. Sits at 0% the entire time
Good app, but can be better
by Ray0145 on 2018/06/14 14:49
I love this app, it works well with my PHA-3. But I really hope the UI can be more frendly.
Was great, not any longer
by yet another frequent flyer on 2018/12/17 01:46
Since a recent version update, HF Player no longer syncs to the iTunes library. Online product support has no helpful information. Shame, I really liked this product, but it has lost a key feature.
App crashing on iOS 11

App has been crashing a lot on iOS 11.
Can’t access playlists after last update
by jxjebdisbdnd on 2018/11/11 02:31
After last update I can no longer switch between playlist, artist, and album lists. The album playing tab is in the way.
Iphohe X Support 2.9.0
by DLNA USER on 2018/11/09 03:27
This application was great with all my iPhones but after the upgrade to release 2.9.0 the mini player cover on the bottom the menu “songs”,”album” and you can’t select them on my Iphone X. Probably a display size problem Please solve it I love this app!!!
Thanks
Plays but not without faults (iPhone)
by dubulup on 2018/09/13 14:50
Cool it plays hi-res files but distracting when it cuts out for a second during playback. Needs an optimization program to cut out the unnecessary phone processes during playback
Great
by Akdjrodja on 2019/03/11 04:27
This app has everything I need.
Wait, wait, wait
by dadosam on 2019/03/07 11:56
If you like to watch an app load, and load, and load, and never finish; and like little spinning wheels, this is your app. If you like to play music, pick something else.
Update inserted advertisements
by TG-44 on 2018/04/25 20:18
This was my favorite music player app, despite the odd crash every so often. Then I opened it up and found that they’d started placing ads in it. Immediately deleted.
