Good Navigation and Setup

App is easy to use, I appreciate details and I feel this app does well with that. Love the map, house info and surrounding neighborhoods information. Only complaint is there have been several times I look for a quote and I would need to email to request one first and it’s not convenient. Price is obviously a factor and houses can book in a matter of hours if you don’t act quickly.

Very disappointed with this company book true them house check make sure that there would be no issues due to COVID but 48 before arriving they cancel my reservation and would not do full refund.

We booked a property in January for a July vacation. Our adult children all requested the time off work. Vacation all set until I find out 30 days ahead of arrival the property is no longer available! Horrible treatment!

I have had an excellent experience renting vacation homes here. The site makes it easier to find the best and most unique rentals for me and my dog. Last summer we stayed at a gorgeous house right on a lake! The owner was available for any request or concern. This summer we are heading to a gorgeous historic home on a river! Thanks HomeAway for making these experiences accessible and easy to arrange it’s so much nicer to be in a home not a hotel.

So me and my large family were looking for a cabin. the cabin itself I didn’t mind paying, no matter the price. What I do mind is how much free you have to pay, 400$ for EACH fee, and there usually is more then one. So the fees itself costed more then what the cabin would have been.

HomeAwayUK is the European name for VRBO. Beware that VRBO and HomeAway claim to not be responsible for refunding your payments even if you cancel a rental that is completely within the stated cancellation policy.

I am getting this error message over and over again. I like the app. But this is annoying. There is no way to tell anyone other than write a review. This is dumb. I get the trot message every time I try to view messages , details etc.

Owner Canceled and Refunded, but Homeaway is Holding the Money

We have used HomeAway and Vrbo a number of times over the years, and have been happy with them. But HomeAway’s conduct recently has been disturbing and is a warning to anyone who might consider using the service in the future. We had scheduled a beach trip via HomeAway for the week of April 6 for spring break. The property owner reached out to us in light of the public health emergency and offered to cancel our reservation. We agreed and they canceled it. The problem is, HomeAway is holding onto one of our two payments. HomeAway refunded one of our payments the day after the cancelation went through. But they continue to hold the other - which is over $1,000. To be clear, this was a rental payment, not a payment for HomeAway’s fee or for insurance or taxes. I have spoke with the call center twice in the last several weeks, most recently 5 days ago. Their only explanation is that the payment is in process. That just doesn’t sound accurate. In today’s world we can process electronic payments almost instantaneously. Instead I assume they are trying as a corporation to manage their cash by holding onto payments not even intended for them - this money should either go to the property owner (who in our case canceled and refunded the money) or back to the guest. HomeAway did nothing to earn this money. This is a warning to anyone who would even consider using one of these services again after the current health crises clears.

They need to have a better approach for permitting reviews on aborted stays.0 I’ve rented from the HomeAway and VRBO several times. The process was seamless and my reviews were glowing. When I had to cancel my Spring break house rental due to the pandemic, I found out how frail their program really is. HomeAway (aka VRBO) left refunds / concession decisions up to their owners. Ok I get it, they are the market place and make maybe 5c on the dollar. I sent 3 emails and 2 calls to the rental’s owner’s realtor. Finally he answered me “no, they need it for their mortgage.. they’re selling the house and won’t even offer a credit” I then cancelled the booking, just to get the token 5% service fee back. When I tried to review the greedy, mean owner and their agent, there was no place to do so. Reviews only occur for completed rentals. I went to support to provide feedback and had two chat agents disconnect on me. Deleting the app. Buh-bye!

The app forces you to buy damage insurance. I have a private insurance, plus I’m insured by my Amex for up to $2000. Why do I have to purchase a third insurance for 60$? I almost didn’t booked because of that. Next time I’ll check another provider first.

Three other families and I were looking forward to watching our sons compete at Cooperstown this summer! Because of Covid-19, the week long tournament was canceled. Like that isn’t bad enough, CHRIS CHANDLER, the owner of our rental house with HomeAway, won’t refund us our $7,000 deposit despite the global pandemic!!!!!! Do the right thing Home Away and refund us our money!

Do you want to pay $1,000 in fees on a $2,200 booking then get absolutely no assistance when you ask to cancel within the grace period and the host stonewalls you? If so, this is the app for you!!! Whereas Airbnb actually manage the hosts and make sure guests have a good stay these guys have absolutely no interest in you after they have your money

Due to this crazy world we live in right now - we are so grateful for both the homes, Sunset Cove and Beachwood, Little Exuma, Bahamas, for working with us so we are able to take our dream vacation! This was not only disappointing for us to not to be able to go but it is also a hardship for the owners of these beautiful homes! I wish each description would give the town its in. Some do, some dont. Also, many places are quite expensive. I’ve been told Home Away takes a large chunk in fees from rental owners and that cost gets passed on to us. Please adjust your fees to be more reasonable for everyone. Thank you.

You guys should learn from airbnb on dealing with the current events of this world. Your policy for refunding cancellation lacks common sense and are basically encouraging the property owners keep our money. I really do wonder how many property owners just openly gave back a full refund, maybe I just met the only one thats not willing to give my money back. You guys need to do more than highly encourage the owners to give a full refund. Why don't you take another step for your customers to get their money back guaranteed. Your highly rated competitor does this, but what have you done for your customers? Oh you sent the property owners an email highly encouraging a full refund. I could have done that, but you guys pay your employees to do that. Just pay me. I will do it, I need a job right now anyways.

I love using Homeaway for family vacations, last minute trips and visits to family around the US. The places we’ve rented have met our expectations and were fairly represented on the app. I can find a place within my budget and have had no problems with security deposit refunds and such. I have recommended Homeaway to all of my friends! Gone are the days of living in a hotel while traveling!

I would avoid this company!! Terrible ! I was forced to cancel my trip due to government issues ban on non-essential travel due to COVID. This company only issued me a 25% refund and I was forced to file a credit card dispute! My friends booked thru air b&b and were instantly issued a FULL refund. I had to wait 3 weeks and still waiting for the 25% refund!

I have had a horrible experience with HomeAway and will not plan to book with them in the future. When travel restrictions required my NYC trip to be cancelled, the renter would not return any of my calls or messages through the app. The HomeAway customer service has been horrible and unable to help me in any way. At this point it looks as though the renter will just keep avoiding me and I will be out several thousand dollars with absolutely no help or protection from HomeAway. I am extremely disappointed with everything about this company and would recommend that others avoid their company at all costs.

If it would allow me to give NO STARS I would but in order to write a review I have to put ONE STAR.!!! I booked with them for what I thought was a beautiful property. Clara was never reachable. She responds when she wants to respond. I booked for a locked in price but wanted to add guest to my list as I saw it never took the full amount of people we had coming. I called and spoke with the owner and explained to him everything going on. That I wanted to add people to the list and one extra day on to my stay. He assured me my full price would stay the same, but the one extra day would be added on at my locked in price of $143 a night. Okay cool, as expected.... A few weeks later I was going to make a payment and thank god I checked because my price had completely sky rocketed & was totally different then what I was aware of. March 19th I questioned Clara and she never responded. I double questioned a few days after & hear nothing back until 2 days ago with a message of “reservation canceled”. Nothing else was explained. It’s also stating a refund for only $101 and not my full deposit. I have a statement from my bank of what was taken out from them and also screen shots of their policy from when I booked and what my total was & how I am to receive a full refund up until 30 days before my trip. (Which isn’t until the middle of September).!!! HORRIBLE SERVICE WOULD NEVER RECOMMEND THEM.!!!

I booked a stay in Pigeon Forge for April 1st. This was done on March 12th. My deposit and payment was taken. Later that night the booking was canceled. My deposit was refunded but not the big amount of $626.06. I have multiple times attempted to reach out to the property owners and the property manager with no response.

I cannot say enough about how disappointing my experience has been with HomeAway. I’ve spent SEVERAL hours on hold over a weeks length of time. Sometimes I’ve lasted over a half hour and have yet to get in touch with their customer service. I’ve already been spreading the word to friends and family about not using HomeAway. There’s not even an email address or online chat to get ahold of them. Do NOT book with them! If you find a property you like try to find it on a different App or go straight through the owners. Cannot express my disappointment enough! If it was an option I would not even give 1 star!

Apparently they’re just an advertisement for property owners to list their rentals. Since the corona virus outbreak Florida is in a state of emergency. We contacted HomeAway for a refund. Told us they can’t do anything, to contact the property owner instead. This is horrible! Please don’t book with HomeAway

We lost half our money because of homeowner and HomeAway doesn’t fight for customers obviously. We had to cancel for basbeball in Phoenix and this “virus” and the lady keeps our money. Very upset! I originally booked an Airbnb with Ileana Martinez (Danny De la Parte) in Miami, Florida for Rolling Loud festival. As many places have shut down and events being postponed due to the Coronavirus, I cancelled my room. I knew that I would be getting back only 50% because I cancelled after 60 days. I cancelled and got confirmation from HomeAway app that the owner refunded me $274.61. However, I only received two different pending charges: one was in the amount of $154.24 and the other $20.37. I let owner know that all of my refund had not been pended to my account as well as my damage deposit refund. The other part of my question she answered was that the owners don't hold the damage refund HomeAway does. Ok, understandable. (I later did see HomeAway did refund the full damage deposit) However, where is the rest of the refund the OWNER is suppose to give? I had been writing Ms. Martinez and her response time was very punctual (always heard from her within hours even though she was not very helpful at all her response to almost everything I asked was call customer service) but when I began to ask her about the rest of the owner refund she stopped responding! As you can see what she refunded me is not 50% of what I've paid ($463.21) After no response from Ms. Martinez, I decided to try to reach out to HomeAway customer service. I called and waited 1 hour and 8 minutes before the call disconnected. I decided to call back and yet wait again. The same thing happened. Held for over an hour and call disconnected. Never got to speak with anyone. This was first time using HomeAway and I will never use it again. It looks like I am now going to have to dispute charges through my bank. Owner cancelled my booking last minute and I scrambled to book another property. I booked and paid then was cancelled on again. I then booked another property and was cancelled on again. If I was to do that they would keep my money (HomeAway). I have received no help or compensation from HomeAway
Stressful first experience

I had originally had a vacation booked to Ft Myers Beach, FL when the owners canceled on me! It was a unpleasant and stressful experience to say the least. The owners wanted me to cancel my reservation on my end which I refused bc I was getting a warning saying I would lose my money so I contacted customer service! Thank goodness I didn’t listen to the owners as I would have lost my money they needed to cancel on their end and issue me a refund!! I was promised some assistance from Home Away to help find another property but after my initial conversation with them I have heard NOTHING! I have sent properties to them that I was interested in bc they offered me financial assistance to find another property due to the owner cancelling on me! I have had to change my entire vacation bc of this experience. I will not be going to Ft Myers Beach as all the remaining properties are out of my price range! Not too mention I haven’t had any forward progress from Home Away with any assistance!! Going through this process of having to search a place to stay and reading all the property reviews to ensure you are picking the right place is daunting; not to mention the surprise of the hidden fees is shocking! The fee schedule should be regulated!

Ridiculous customer service. I mistyped my email address by one character on a reservation request. It’s taken 3 calls and it’s still not resolved. They force the customer to go through significant effort to get a simple mistake fixed.

This is a very long drawn out process. One would hope at the very least, that when you have filters in place that it may weed out some of the properties that don’t meet the criteria but there is still location, added fees and deposits that you have to consider and graph out accordingly. It is very infuriating to think you have the choices narrowed down to 5 or 6 just to find out the owner couldn’t even put the correct number of bedrooms in the title description. I’m on the verge of giving up.

Love using this app for vacation searches. It would be AWESOME if I could add a search word like “bikes”. Instead, I have to filter as best as I can and then read all the details. It would save a lot of time to have key word filters. Also, would love a feature that allowed you to choose 3 stays and then compare. Having 3 columns with check marks by all amenities offered would be so helpful.

I installed this app after repeated nagging by HomeAway, hoping it would make it easier to get access codes and property info when traveling. It completely fails at that; it’s just a wrapper for the website. I expected to have access to property info available offline, when I didn’t have cell coverage, but it didn’t do that. It was easy to click the wrong thing and end up on the Book now page for a property I already had booked - why didn’t it recognize I had a reservation starting that day? I deleted this app and won’t use again.

In the past I had good experiences but not in the last week. I had a friend drive by a property that I reserved and the pictures were not the same as current pictures on the website. Also owner of another property asked if he could stay in house with me the. Asked if I would send my ID thru text. I have screen shots of messages through the website and hoping I get full refund. If not I will give 0 stars. HomeAway could not find my reservation ID and was on the phone for quite some time. Not happy

We are trying to book ahead a year, as is needed in busy vacation areas. The majority of the properties we have requested further booking information on, come back with a MUCH higher rate than is on the site. They say their rates were not updated. I am beginning to think it is a bait and switch thing happening. ALL properties should have current information, or not even have a calendar available, if they have not posted and confirmed the pricing on it.

If it would allow me to give NO STARS I would but in order to write a review I have to put ONE STAR.!!! I booked with them for what I thought was a beautiful property. Clara was never reachable. She responds when she wants to respond. I booked for a locked in price but wanted to add guest to my list as I saw it never took the full amount of people we had coming. I called and spoke with the owner and explained to him everything going on. That I wanted to add people to the list and one extra day on to my stay. He assured me my full price would stay the same, but the one extra day would be added on at my locked in price of $143 a night. Okay cool, as expected.... A few weeks later I was going to make a payment and thank god I checked because my price had completely sky rocketed & was totally different then what I was aware of. March 19th I questioned Clara and she never responded. I double questioned a few days after & hear nothing back until 2 days ago with a message of “reservation canceled”. Nothing else was explained. It’s also stating a refund for only $101 and not my full deposit. I have a statement from my bank of what was taken out from them and also screen shots of their policy from when I booked and what my total was & how I am to receive a full refund up until 30 days before my trip. (Which isn’t until the middle of September).!!! HORRIBLE SERVICE WOULD NEVER RECOMMEND THEM.!!!

I am a regular user of HomeAway and appreciate their service however I have two major issues hat I believe will be their downfall if not addressed: 1. Fees are not transparent and are becoming out of control. Rather than recognizing the opportunity to compete with the Airbnb’s of the world on fees it is as if they instead just jacked up fees across the board. Further, because the “price per night” does not include the fees and charges across properties are inconsistent, the search experience is much more time consuming and frustrating than it needs to be. HomeAway should provide the option to see price per night with fees as a search option at a minimum which would at least increase transparency. 2. The app is buggy. This is in acceptable for a product/company at this scale. Get it together and only release updates when they’re properly tested. Simple features like “favorites” are not synchronized at times with the desktop. The funny thing is that this wasn’t a problem until they apparently recently updated the app because I used it in the past. The share favorites with someone has disappeared. The “draw area” for search (a nice idea) causes the app to crash regularly. None of this should be happening for a company like HomeAway.
Stressful first experience

I had originally had a vacation booked to Ft Myers Beach, FL when the owners canceled on me! It was a unpleasant and stressful experience to say the least. The owners wanted me to cancel my reservation on my end which I refused bc I was getting a warning saying I would lose my money so I contacted customer service! Thank goodness I didn’t listen to the owners as I would have lost my money they needed to cancel on their end and issue me a refund!! I was promised some assistance from Home Away to help find another property but after my initial conversation with them I have heard NOTHING! I have sent properties to them that I was interested in bc they offered me financial assistance to find another property due to the owner cancelling on me! I have had to change my entire vacation bc of this experience. I will not be going to Ft Myers Beach as all the remaining properties are out of my price range! Not too mention I haven’t had any forward progress from Home Away with any assistance!! Going through this process of having to search a place to stay and reading all the property reviews to ensure you are picking the right place is daunting; not to mention the surprise of the hidden fees is shocking! The fee schedule should be regulated!
Property owners and calendars

The HomeAway app is convenient, but there are a few things that could make it better. One very important thing that HomeAway needs to do is punish owners w a fee for not updating their calendars on a regular basis. The calendar/app says the property is available, so you submit a request. It can take a day for them to get back to you to say, “Oops, sorry, our days must be crossed. Can you shift your plans ahead 3 days?” Sure, I’ll just call the conference and tell them to postpone everything. And this happens over and over and over until you’ve wasted a week trying to book individual properties. In addition, the search function needs to be improved. It doesn’t include all possible properties, even though they make you think it does. For example, Pasadena & Altadena CA are adjacent cities. If you do a search for Pasadena, you might have 5 Pasadena properties & 1 from Altadena. This leads you to believe that there’s only one in range in Altadena. But then, do a separate Altadena search, and it gives you 4 additional properties! There’s got to be a better way to do the search on your phone.

I enjoy the application and it’s ease of use and our rentals have always been wonderful and exactly as described. I can easily and quickly filter on what I’m looking for, the prices are prominently displayed for clarity, instant booking is great and the ease of contacting the owner through the app is also top notch. I also like the ability to look at the cost breakdown, BUT here is where I PAY for all that convenience. This app used to be my go-to to find a reasonable, quality alternative to hotels! Not any more! Often the fees exceed the cost of the rental! What??? No, absolutely not, I won’t pay it, so I end up not booking with you more often than booking! The fees your app are charging owners are passed along to me and in some cases, are pushing prices WAY above even luxury hotels. The original purpose of the app has been lost. I am still giving the app a 4 because of all the great functionality. It’s a shame I can’t give it 5. Go back to your roots, lower the fees. Your model is inching out your original client base.

The two times I used HomeAway and didn’t have any issues with my reservation it worked just fine. However the third time there was some glitch with my reservation and I got double booked. One of the reservations I paid for, the other one I did not request so I did not pay for. I only inquired about availability and the Home Away app kept sending automatic messages assuming that I wanted to book and then annoyingly sending reminders for me to pay. I’ve tried in vain to find someway to cancel the erroneous booking. There is no way to get in touch with the human with HomeAway until after you finish booking. This has led to some tension between me and the person who’s home I’m trying to book. She keeps asking me to cancel so that her place is not showing up as busy in the calendar, I keep asking her to cancel so that I will stop getting annoying messages to pay for a booking I don’t want. The virtual assistant is useless on the in app chat. It can only regurgitate information that’s already available on the listing. Anything as simple as “how do I cancel pending reservations” seems to stump it!

There is no way to scroll down in the app to read ALL reviews. You have to go on a pc to the vrbo site to see all the reviews. This is a critical feature that is needed because not everyone has a pc and depends on the app. Very important review information is not seen and this is supposed to be one of the features that’s makes your site appealing. Also you can’t vote on helpfulness in the HomeAway app like you can on the vrbo website. This too is very important as owners can upvote good reviews by using other email addresses to push the good ones to the top. This is what is first seen when you go to reviews in the app. Again another reason why expoaing all reviews in the app is critical. We now have to pay a fee just to book with the site. So it’s time to start delivering features that allow a traveler to make the best informed decision. At some point not exposing all the reviews in the app is likely going to result in liability to homeaway if a decision is made on a property that had the information in a review that homeaway didn’t expose.

I was not able to access the property because the property owner completely scammed us. $530!! Home Away insisted that I had to go through the property owner even though she turned off her phone and refused to answer a combined total of 17 calls, texts, and emails. Property owner took my money at booking and was unresponsive and the place was not accessible. Home Away was rude in their attempt to help me and ended up putting me up in a terrible hotel in their pathetic attempt to “make it right”. They claim to be an advertising platform but they are obviously a middle-man to potential scammers because they obviously have access to the property accounts. They continue to allow this scamming property manager to continue renting through their site without any repercussions and leaving us with no choice but to accept their terrible excuse for a replacement. I didn’t even intend to do business with Home Away!! I booked through Expedia because they are usually reliable, and ended up getting them without my knowledge. Oh and they also don’t do refunds and don’t stand by the customer. They would rather cater to the scammers that post on their page. Worst experience EVER!

After booking previously without issue I found a rental through Home Away for a trip to Vancouver this past summer. I booked and was approved, then the renter contacted me outside of the app and asked to transact directly. It’s a VERY long story but I found this suspicious and asked Home Away for advice and if this was against their policies. Home Away responded that it was not against their policies and that the renter had great reviews and told me not to worry. Long story short, the renter is a HUGE scam artist who took me and many other Home Away customers for a ride. I was able to get a refund, and found other accommodations at 10:00pm at night in a strange city. I did however lose a lot of extra money due to a last minute desperate situation, I was put in harms way because of my dealings with some seriously shady people, and Home Away did NOTHING to help before or after the fact. I have contacted them after the event and sent details and further proof that they had done me and other customers a disservice. I guess they are too busy to be bothered because they never even followed up about my concerns. I will never use this service again.
Magnificent Magnolia Cottage

In Hendersonville, a short drive to Asheville, NC. We had a wonderful stay, and felt at home right away. Nice sized covered front porch, with seating for four. House has been tastefully decorated, and we loved the ten foot ceilings, and all the charm of the place. Wood floors throughout, and even though the floors weren’t quite level in places, it really doesn’t matter. The kitchen was fully equipped, including both a regular coffee pot and a Keurig, and even a toaster and blender. Lots of blind covered windows let in lots of light, even on a cloudy day! Bed(s) were extremely comfortable, and extra linens and towels were provided. Washer, dryer, and dishwasher were definitely a plus. Everything was very clean. Nice neighborhood, a short walk to a great coffee shop in one direction, and just a few minutes to downtown Hendersonville, which is great! Restaurants, antique stores, and all kinds of small specialty shops. Wished we had more time to explore everything there was to discover. The owner was very quick to respond when I messaged. My one recommendation is that there should be some kind of steppingstones or sidewalk from the driveway to the front porch. We had quite a bit of rain during our visit, and our shoes got kind of wet in the grass, and then we wouldn’t have had to worry about tracking dirt and water inside. Still, in my opinion, a five star getaway. If it rains during your stay, just leave your shoes at the door!😁

I gave a 2 rating because we signed up for a property and found out the next day that the owner did not have it available at all and was unaware it was being shown on the HomeAway or VRBO sites. Luckily we were able to find another property for the same 2-day weekend, but the cost was $500 more and not as good a fit for our family. While completing the process of that reservation, HomeAway offered damage insurance to finish the payment but I thought I had seen a damage waiver cost in the original fees. The website didn’t allow me to go back to look at the previous steps to review before making the decision about damage insurance. Fortunately, a quick reply to a query I made to TurnKey explained the TurnKey damage waiver policy, so I was able to make an informed decision. We had a bad experience with a HomeAway rental in Montecito CA last year for a wedding in Santa Barbara. We documented our complaints for that experience. We are hoping for a better result this time in the same Santa Barbara area. We will be happy to raise our rating based on a better experience.

NOW HOME AWAY! Expedia aka Home Away charges a “service fee” to the renter(s) based on the price/day x total days you’re booking it for. VRBO let owners post vacation rentals & renters could contact owner directly. We did this for many years for 2 condos in Maui. I recently booked 2 different condos (prior condos were sold) and one owner used a Real Estate company’s property management to handle payments & other “vacation rental” needs on the island as they reside in Washington. Unaware of this till way later. I HAD to enter my cc info to reserve, Home Away bam gets their fee. It also said full payment due at time of booking. Done. NOPE! Got confirmation email from Home Away stating payment received a few times. Days later I get email from H A requesting payment. Then from the property management that I knew nothing about! What a hassle. Because H A stated “full payment at time of booking” and I had a difficult time getting direct contact info for the owner from H A I just found this to be such a hassle! HOME AWAY, owner info needs to be easily accessible with their rental posts! You don’t own these properties!! Just be careful fellow travelers.

Love the selection, pics and details. Easy to use and this is my go to app for finding a place to stay while on vacation. The only problem I've had with it is that sometimes there is conflicting info. For example, I put in my dates (which was 4 nights), it showed me my options, I picked an option and then it said the owners had a minimum stay requirement and gave me the option to contact the owners to see if they would make an exception. So I proceeded to do that when the next screen popped up for me to go ahead and book it. That is confusing and nobody wants to book something and then find out there was some sort of mistake and you don't have a place to stay after all. Another thing is that the fees are crazy high. You’ll think your paying one thing but by the time all the fees get added in your paying a lot more per night than what it looks. And the app doesn’t allow me to put in a property id# that I already know to pull up and see if it is available.

I was booking a cabin for a nice week getaway and the owner offered to give me a payment plan. He set up two payments and altered the price to what I’d be paying that day. Once I used the link provided for me, I put in my card information and the booking agency double charged me! I notified them of the problem and they placed a hold on my account. They said it would take 24-48 hours for them to let go of my money!! I went to the bank and the supervisor there said that they could get the money back to me quicker and all that HomeAway had to do was fax over a company letterhead stating that it was just a hold and that it is being released. I called HomeAway back and they said that they “ couldn’t “ do it, and that they don’t have the resources to. I was on the phone with representatives 7 different times just to get that answer. One representative even hung up on me. My money wasn’t release until 3 days later. The representatives that I talked to were very rude and unhelpful with the exception of one of them. I genuinely would not recommend this booking agency at all.

We recently rented a property listed at $55 a day we booked for 8 weeks they had the instant confirmation. At 2am we received a message from homeowner stating sorry not available for those dates money will be refunded. We start looking for a new rental and there it is available for the time frame we are putting into system but now for $65 a day. We called home away and they couldn’t seem to understand what we were saying there is a serious lack of English speaking reps when you call in. Now we are reading reviews before booking and keep finding repeatedly booked for months cancelled last minute by owner. Why do we have penalties for cancellations yet the owners do not? Why if the owner canceled repeatedly are they still allowed to advertise with you? We have heard from several people we know this has happened to them also. We have rented multiple homes through the years as have many of our friends but unfortunately your reputation is going down the drain because you are allowing this to continually happen.

We don’t care for having to put in our credit card info, just to confirm dates with property manager, then getting charged for each property inquiring on. We had to provide the info, in order to hit send for our message. Originally, we booked & paid for one property. Money came out, we got a confirmation & we thought we were booked/confirmed. But, we got a notice of a refund & a message from property manager/owner that the dates were actually not available, even though the online booking system said that they were & allowed us to book it. Not very happy that happened & that we now have to wait for our refund. So, that is why we are now asking for date verification!! We should not have to have our credit card info charged, until we’ve settled on the property we want. They are booking fast for June and we had to do multiple date availability confirmation requests. Has to be a better way, like it used to be.
Starlight Baptist Church Women’s Retreat

This home is a jewel. It is spacious, very clean, beautifully furnished and well maintained inside and out. The kitchen is well stocked with everything one will need to prepare snacks or a meal. We had a Women’s Retreat and thoroughly enjoyed ourselves. There were 13 of us. We had plenty of sleeping space to sleep comfortably, as well as plenty of bathrooms. It is everything you would look for in a vacation rental. There are local stores nearby. It is easy to get downtown to San Antonio. This was our 4th Annual Retreat and this has been the best vacation rental we have stayed in thus far. Our goal is to visit a different state each year and I would not have any qualms in spending a 5th Annual Retreat in this home. Richard is awesome. If there was a 6 star rating, we will certainly give this home a 6 star rating!

HomeAway is my go to app for all vacation rentals. I have used the app for several years for houses in the Rocky Mountains on ski trip to beach getaways on the East Coast. The app is incredibly user friendly and makes communicating with rental owners about payments, check in procedures and check out a breeze. Recent searches, favorited properties and past trips are saved automatically which helps when looking through the endless options available. Other user reviews are extremely helpful when scoping out your next vacation spot. All properties I have rented through this app have been exactly, if not better, than advertised. In short...I’m hooked on HomeAway. Thank you for making a potentially stressful activity the last thing I worry about every time!

I tried booking a home through this organization in Canmore Alberta Canada. I had multitudes of problems and errors and got conned by the owner of the property and never received my $2000 security deposit back despite no damage done and the many broken things within the home. At $3000 per night for Theis Canmore property on silver tip road I expected more from Vrbo and home away. Instead I was treated with disrespect from the owner and multiple employees. I spoke with 5 different people and got nothing but run around! And the owner of this Canmore high end property is not a very nice person. A scam man! You would think vrbo would not permit and individual such as this to promote his home when he bullies his tenants and manipulates them them into signing a separate contract. Disappointing!! I will never use home away or vrbo again!! And I have rented several very high end properties through them. Vrbo should have backed me up considering their screw up!
Finding the right accommodation is getting more difficult

It used to be easy to find an apartment, condo or house in the HomeAway app. In the last year, it has changed. Many listings are now for a room in a house (a la AirBNB), but there is no category for rooms. People list them as a studio, or more often as a 1 bedroom/1 bath apartment. Some people are listing each bedroom in a 4 bedroom house as a house (shared bathrooms and kitchen?! - I don’t want a dorm room!). You often have to wade through half the description to find out what is really offered. They have also added motel rooms. And, lastly, some have “kitchenettes” that are nothing more than a dorm fridge, sink and a microwave. There are also RV parking listings, no RV - just a spot on their driveway for $27/night! And an old single-wide mobile home where the owner and his dog would move to a neighbor while you are there - nicknacks, stacks of mail and dog hairs included at no extra cost... I’ve also found that prices are much higher this year, often 30-40% higher than equivalent places in past years. Searching always defaults to “HomeAway Sort”, rather than staying in the category you have used previously. It’s annoying, and requires more keystrokes. HomeAway needs to tighten up their policing of entries and improve search parameters, or they will lose customers. I am almost gone.

Seven of us from the Seattle area recently spent five nights in this wonderful home in Roschbach. We were four adults and three children, ages 10,10, and 12. My father immigrated from a town very near here many years ago. Besides wonderful times visiting with family, we took day trips to the Rhein, Heidelberg, and the Alsace. The home is spacious with ample room for all of us. We ate most of our meals on an outdoor deck and the kids had a yard to romp in. This area, the Pfalz, is not as famous as Heidelberg, Munich,or Berlin, but it is beautiful, peaceful wine country. My wife and I lived three years in Heidelberg and we know Germany well. If you are a group of five or more and wish to spend time in this precious part of Germany, I don’t see how you could top this home. Kurt Weis

I have a large family and we do our share of traveling. If you require more than one hotel room things get very pricey. I'm top of that, there are no "common areas" to visit with family in most hotel rooms. I love this app because it allows me to reserve homes or condos with multiple bedrooms and bathrooms to accommodate my family for a fraction of the cost I could pay at any hotel. Every reservation I have made has turned out wonderfully! The reviews are very helpful, and the rates are astounding. I recommend this to anyone traveling out of their home area for more than a couple of nights. You will save money and recognize so many more benefits over staying with a hotel! App is very user-friendly.

I have been using VRBO and Home and Away for 10+ years. We have book many a vacation homes as well as weekend trips. We have always found it easy to use. The pictures, description and reviews have always been accurate and helpful for finding accommodations that fit our needs. VRBO/Home andAway has also been great at handling problems with bookings. My daughter booked a spring break trip and the management company backed out within hours of her payment. VRBO/Home and Away got her money back in full within hours. I also have to compliment fellow users. Everyone seems to right excellent detailed reviews that really give insight to the property and their experience. That is so very helpful!
Barrier Island Tetreat

Barrier Island Retreat is a wonderful place to stay. Two of my daughters and I enjoyed our long weekend getaway so much. This apartment is adorable as well as comfortable, and the owners Deby and John are awesome. They do not hover around, but are always available and very knowledgeable about the area. The location is great, access to the beach very easy and just a short drive to St. Augustine makes Barrier Island Retreat the perfect place to stay. Not having a full kitchen was no problem for us. A very nice grill was available if we had chosen to cookout, but the refrigerator held all the cold foods we brought along and we brewed tea in the microwave. We do plan on making this place one of our go to, home away from home. Thanks again for a wonderful visit!

We were blown away when we walked into this beautifully appointed guest home. There was nothing lacking and everything was pristine, new, and of highest quality. Joerg was an outstanding host and was gracious about letting us stay another night. We certainly hope to be back. Plenty of room for privacy and to stretch out with 3 full bedrooms and baths. The hot tub and sauna are in the guest house, although the salt water pool is part of the main house. Property is less than a mile from a wonderful breakfast and lunch cafe, although the refrigerator and pantry were full of breakfast supplies had we chosen to make it. There was both an Expresso and a coffee maker. Just cannot say enough good things about this wonderful place.

The app it’s self is okay but the Listings can be a bit money hungry. No cancellations unless you pay a fee $$. Okay normal, but most places I’ve stayed at only charge that if you cancel day of or day before. You can’t cancel 60 days before without the cancellation fee (which is actually something you have to pay for ahead of time (like insurance) if you don’t think you can make it and in that case just don’t go) Places you can stay at look cheap but when you go to book the price just about doubles due to the owners fees, cleaning fees, alien abduction protection fees. I love the app, it’s easy to navigate. My only frustration comes from selecting the perfect home that has no bookings on the calendar only to receive an email from the owner that it is not available. Then I go through the same process again!! Each time I try and book and probably go through a minimum of 3 that look available but the owner has failed to update their calendar- it’s very frustrating! I wish there was something that made them keep the calendar updated. When an owner tells me it’s not available, I usually respond with “how strange, the calendar shows it available, you better look into this great mystery!”

Our experience at this cozy and VERY CLEAN home was nothing less than perfect. We were not only able to enjoy the beaches, boat rental for the day, but also enjoy the home and some much needed family time. We brought our corn hole, grilled in the backyard, and were able to sit and enjoy a few family dinners. One of the best things was the location. We were not right in the middle of all the tourist areas, but able to enjoy them as we wanted. Several personal touches that made you feel welcome, as if you were at a home away from home!! Our family would recommend highly!!

Cannot recommend. I had been happily using and recommending HomeAway for years, but I’m uninstalling the app in Aug ‘19 because, for several months now, every time I need to find a place to stay, I end up getting annoyed and just using Airbnb instead because every listing on HomeAway is priced deceptively low, with extra fees added that dramatically increase the price of the stay. It’s become commonplace from Georgia to California. Friends of mine and even my mom have begun to say the same thing without me even mentioning it, so clearly this is a problem the average customer is facing and not just me. No longer using the app since price uncertainty such a problem. HomeAway: Do not allow home owners to list “$62/night” when it really will cost $150+. You’re allowing home owners to ruin your app’s experience.

Although it’s frustrating to log in sometimes, it doesn’t compare to the problematic customer service system. It is based out of this country and the customer. Serv. Reps. Don’t know how to handle problems...so they dont. I’ve been on VRBO since 2012 and recently they have completely computerized and algorithms based, so if you have one fussy renter who gives an unjust review because you didn’t have scissors in the kitchen, they will not consider you for advancement in their status. Or a woman who misread the deposit/insurance policy and when she contacted VRBO (international workers), they told them it wasn’t there problem and they should contact me? They got the money! When I addressed the issue with them via email, an automated email stated they would get back to me shortly...nothing

My wife and 17y/o son stayed at Casa de Banta for the second time during the last week in June 2018. It was the BEST HomeAway experience we have ever had. David & Libby were very accommodating and had some great restaurant recommendations. There were plenty of kitchen appliances, towels, and very comfortable furnishings. The outside patio area was a great place to have breakfast every morning and a glass of wine in the evening. It was nice having parking that was onsite in the middle of town. Walking distance to everything except to the beach. We will definitely be returning as St. Augustine is one of our favorite getaway places in Florida. I couldn’t of asked for a better way to spend my 60th Birthday!

Our stay in Vernazza at this property was great for the following reasons. The place is very clean, even the comforters smelled like they just came out of the dryer. Towels and bed linens were starch white. Pillows and mattress were very comfortable. The property owner was attentive to detail, leaving extra toiletries, kitchen items like teas, snacks, etc. We had plenty of towels and pillows, comforters. The owner has great communication and tells you how to work certain things. It's very easy to find and very close to the train station. For a family of 5 we were surprised at how roomy the place is. You will not be disappointed if you stay at this place.

We dealt with an issue on our stay with cleanliness and then with our safety and being harassed by an employee on the property after trying to address the issue of the house not being clean. Home away security and customer service have done absolutely nothing to resolve this issue. they could not get me any kind of refund even after hours of phone calls and emailing back-and-forth with customer service sending in photos of The employee harassing my personal Facebook weeks later. I am blown away by the lack of customer service. this is a hospitality industry you should care if your customers stay in a clean and safe environment. Home away claimed they are just a online booking platform and have no responsibility to anything that happens to the customer during their stay. Very concerning.

Absolutely beautiful. The owners have thought of everything for a comfortable stay. The cabin is super clean. (I am a clean freak so this meant a lot to me) down to the smallest little details. This was our first trip without kids or grandchildren in 30 years and we were not disappointed. The view is breathtaking. So relaxing. The bed was so comfortable you just didn’t want to get up. We will definitely be back. My absolute favorite smell in the world is fresh wood and that is exactly what I smelled when I first walked in. The fire pit and waterfall on the patio was mesmerizing. Can’t say enough about this beautiful peace on earth. God bless

Blue Nest ‘ is definitely a paradise for a peaceful , quite wonderful vacation for the whole family ... this beautiful house has everything you could ever imagine , just pack up & go , the deck is outstanding with his view , we spent just about our entire time out on the deck for breakfast - watching the surfers at sunset , brunch and evenings just absorbing the gorgeous ocean view with the relaxing sounds of the waves .. it was for my Sons gorgeous beach wedding which was located next door to us , very convenient because we had several elderly people staying with us , the owner & management staff was excellent in every way !

I book a condo for week in Wildwood Crest New Jersey. We wanted to go down as a family and all stay at the same place instead of hotel rooms which we usually did. I booked the condo in September and paid $1670 on it. The end of May a few days befor rest of payment was due I got a email saying my reservation was canceled with no explanation!!!!! Needless to say we were all very disappointed I tried to book other places in the same area in around the same price range but could not find anything. I received no help from app and owner of property would not respond to my emails !!!!
A house close to Heaven

This is a beautiful house but the views are the best I’ve seen for a vacation stay. Every window gives you a view of the mountains. It’s also close to Trail Ridge Road, Grand Lake, and shopping. My son-in-law gave me the best Colorado vacation yet. I’ve had many of them in my seventy-one years but the house and surrounding views were relaxing and exciting as well. I loved the sun rising over the mountains and the deer eating around in the trees close to the house morning and evening. There were seven of us and we had plenty of room for alone time and family time. I highly recommend staying at this lovely home.

I am getting ready to go on my third trip to Italy. I have used Homeaway properties in Rome, Milan, Florence, and also Lucern Switzerland 🇨🇭. Each one was different and unique and located exactly in the areas where I wanted to stay. Dealing with the hosts of the property have been pleasant and easy. I made a wonderful new friend of my first host in the Rome and will be seeing her again next year. I highly recommend home away, it is the only service I use when I am looking for a place to stay when I travel. Whether I am traveling alone or with my family I can always find exactly the right property!

I have been using HomeAway/vrbo since at least 2007. All but one of our experiences have been great and without issue, but recently I’ve noticed a pattern of increasing fees in all of the fee categories pet,cleaning,service fee, etc. I feel that an advertised price of $175/nt should not turn into $300 plus and it has, with increasing frequency. This inappropriate greed will cost this industry and its people in the long run. I hope that HomeAway will address this or change its teaching in the workshops it offers to property owners. There are a lot of good people still on here but just be aware of everything and not just the cost per night you see with the picture of the property.

They “changed platforms” mid reservation requiring 2 days of multi-hour, multi-party calls. The homeowner, me, the trip insurance company, my bank, and the homeowner’s bank had to get involved to straighten out the mess. 2 of the 5 homeaway reps were good to work with; others did things like put me on hold 16 minutes before they disconnected the call and I had to start over with a different agent. I was given conflicting information from different customer service reps. They nice ones kept apologizing for all the issues but never offered to waive or reduce the $499 service fee on the new reservation that ultimately was decided to be the solution. I literally missed work for 2 days dealing with this mess. I still have more follow up to make sure my first trip is properly refunded.

I use this app frequently when looking for a vacation rental. I find it easy to use and very helpful to access info on a place I've booked. What I don't like is that the reviews on the rentals do not show a date so there is no way to know how old they are and I really depend on the reviews for help in making a decision. Another thing I don't like is that you have to put dates in to see if they are available. I'm pretty sure if you don't use the app but use the home away web site you can just check availability without entering specific dates which I find much easier and much more helpful. Fix these two issues and I will gladly give it five stars! ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐

I am hoping some developers will start making 3rd party apps to replace lame apps like this. VRBO has already cheated its hosts by defaulting on prepay contracts and a company mission of. A prepay platform. Now they are making local map searches very difficult with hidden map functions. Hosts want my and pay for a local geographical searchable rental. What a bummer to pay a company for marketing your rental, only to find attempted searches suggesting other rentals outside of of your area. We have about 19 rentals in the Big Sur area and VRBO shows 800! This last version requires reconfiguration of map, filter and outline function nearly impossible for the average user. More inventory in an area means more sales and fees for VRBO. A convenient result of NOT updating means no map or search functions. Most people do not update apps that often... especially power users that might be able to figure out the later lame versions. I am trying to push people over to airbnb platform, but they have done the same sneaky “updates” for profit gains. You might ask how suggesting an area NOT asked for will benefit a traveler or a host! Both end up disappointed, with no refund options.

You guys should learn from airbnb on dealing with the current events of this world. Your policy for refunding cancellation lacks common sense and are basically encouraging the property owners keep our money. I really do wonder how many property owners just openly gave back a full refund, maybe I just met the only one thats not willing to give my money back. You guys need to do more than highly encourage the owners to give a full refund. Why don't you take another step for your customers to get their money back guaranteed. Your highly rated competitor does this, but what have you done for your customers? Oh you sent the property owners an email highly encouraging a full refund. I could have done that, but you guys pay your employees to do that. Just pay me. I will do it, I need a job right now anyways.

review update ( after developer response, read original below): I tried what you are suggesting for 4 weeks. I was calling and texting with support, and I got maybe five “case numbers” and the issue got pushed to the “experts” maybe three times. Every single time the agents told me that I’m fully in the right because I’m canceling within the window. None of them did anything useful. They said the owner isn’t responding to them. They threatened the owner with blocking the account, but it seems that was ignored too. Original review: I booked a place and tried to cancel within the cancelation window. The owner didn’t want to pay me back and HomeAway support was totally useless and evasive. Just use Airbnb. You can cancel yourself! Horrible! I’d give them 0 stars if I could
Pricing problems

I used to use Homeaway and VRBO all the time. The last couple times though have been very frustrating. The fees aren’t obvious... and aren’t a small matter... a $250 a night (2 nights) charged my credit card for $1259. Of course that includes a cleaning deposit that will be refunded- but since I am not staying until next summer... that is a whole year where they get to use my money. Second, and more importantly, this is the second time in a row that I have been notified by the owner that their fee schedule wasn’t up to date. So instead of $250, it is $450 a night with a 4 night minimum. Meanwhile, I am getting confirmation emails from HomeAway and telling me I am booked. Can the owner just arbitrarily increase the price like that? Am I booked or not??? This is not worth the hassle.

I made a reservation without creating an account, which just asks you for your email once. Having done that, I reserved and paid thru Apple Pay, and was informed I would be notified if the owner confirmed the reservation. I never received a confirmation, then later found out I had still been charged $400 because the owner confirmed, but I never received the confirmation because I made a typo when entering my email. The app only asked for my email once, never had me re-type it, and did not do anything when they received bounce-back messages for the email address I accidentally did enter (I misspelled gmail as gamil). They still charged me the full amount and made no effort to make it right or change their protocol to protect others from this happening.

What we liked about this little place was it was within walking distance from the beach and many different restaurants. You don’t have to worry about trying to find parking or pay for parking. I would highly recommend this place to any couple that is looking for a nice getaway. We’re a couple that likes to be on the go and this location gave us easy access to the main Highway which enabled us to travel to all our activities. We would defiantly recommend this rental to our friends and family members. I would also like to say that if you have any questions, just send a message to Fabrice & Sabrina and they will respond well within an hour. Our trip to Florida was filled with adventure, meaning our fights were not on time and the whole time I keep in touch with them. They also checked in on us to see if we had arrived at their rental okay. Great people to work with. Ralph

I reserved HomeAway location which I had to cancel due to work relocation. I have my cancellation request but was charged as a "no show". I've been trying to reach a resolution for months now. I have the hardest time reaching someone regarding my refund. The times I have spoken with someone I was told the issue would be resolved. I've been dealing with this for at least about three months now. I feel no closer to a resolution and don't have much faith I'd ever get this resolved. Despite the issues I stayed at a different HomeAway Location, which I loved. I was told my deposit would be issued shortly after my stay. When contacting the home owner I was told I should've received my deposit weeks ago. Still I've yet to get a refund for my cancellation or my deposit.
Great app missing one feature

I love VRBO and Homeaway. We’ve been using both for many years and have great memories vacationing at a comfortable home in plenty of towns and cities. We take our dogs when it’s a drivable distance so I love the pets accepted filter option. Being able to create favorites folders when searching for an upcoming trip works great, but not being able to create new folders within the app is a big miss. A user must login on a computer in order to create a new destination favorite folder to be able to save properties from the app. This feature needs to be added to the app.

App is easy to use, I appreciate details and I feel this app does well with that. Love the map, house info and surrounding neighborhoods information. Only complaint is there have been several times I look for a quote and I would need to email to request one first and it’s not convenient. Price is obviously a factor and houses can book in a matter of hours if you don’t act quickly.

I have had an excellent experience renting vacation homes here. The site makes it easier to find the best and most unique rentals for me and my dog. Last summer we stayed at a gorgeous house right on a lake! The owner was available for any request or concern. This summer we are heading to a gorgeous historic home on a river! Thanks HomeAway for making these experiences accessible and easy to arrange it’s so much nicer to be in a home not a hotel.

Owner Canceled and Refunded, but Homeaway is Holding the Money

We have used HomeAway and Vrbo a number of times over the years, and have been happy with them. But HomeAway’s conduct recently has been disturbing and is a warning to anyone who might consider using the service in the future. We had scheduled a beach trip via HomeAway for the week of April 6 for spring break. The property owner reached out to us in light of the public health emergency and offered to cancel our reservation. We agreed and they canceled it. The problem is, HomeAway is holding onto one of our two payments. HomeAway refunded one of our payments the day after the cancelation went through. But they continue to hold the other - which is over $1,000. To be clear, this was a rental payment, not a payment for HomeAway’s fee or for insurance or taxes. I have spoke with the call center twice in the last several weeks, most recently 5 days ago. Their only explanation is that the payment is in process. That just doesn’t sound accurate. In today’s world we can process electronic payments almost instantaneously. Instead I assume they are trying as a corporation to manage their cash by holding onto payments not even intended for them - this money should either go to the property owner (who in our case canceled and refunded the money) or back to the guest. HomeAway did nothing to earn this money. This is a warning to anyone who would even consider using one of these services again after the current health crises clears.

They need to have a better approach for permitting reviews on aborted stays.0 I’ve rented from the HomeAway and VRBO several times. The process was seamless and my reviews were glowing. When I had to cancel my Spring break house rental due to the pandemic, I found out how frail their program really is. HomeAway (aka VRBO) left refunds / concession decisions up to their owners. Ok I get it, they are the market place and make maybe 5c on the dollar. I sent 3 emails and 2 calls to the rental’s owner’s realtor. Finally he answered me “no, they need it for their mortgage.. they’re selling the house and won’t even offer a credit” I then cancelled the booking, just to get the token 5% service fee back. When I tried to review the greedy, mean owner and their agent, there was no place to do so. Reviews only occur for completed rentals. I went to support to provide feedback and had two chat agents disconnect on me. Deleting the app. Buh-bye!

The app forces you to buy damage insurance. I have a private insurance, plus I’m insured by my Amex for up to $2000. Why do I have to purchase a third insurance for 60$? I almost didn’t booked because of that. Next time I’ll check another provider first.

You guys should learn from airbnb on dealing with the current events of this world. Your policy for refunding cancellation lacks common sense and are basically encouraging the property owners keep our money. I really do wonder how many property owners just openly gave back a full refund, maybe I just met the only one thats not willing to give my money back. You guys need to do more than highly encourage the owners to give a full refund. Why don't you take another step for your customers to get their money back guaranteed. Your highly rated competitor does this, but what have you done for your customers? Oh you sent the property owners an email highly encouraging a full refund. I could have done that, but you guys pay your employees to do that. Just pay me. I will do it, I need a job right now anyways.

I love using Homeaway for family vacations, last minute trips and visits to family around the US. The places we’ve rented have met our expectations and were fairly represented on the app. I can find a place within my budget and have had no problems with security deposit refunds and such. I have recommended Homeaway to all of my friends! Gone are the days of living in a hotel while traveling!

This company only issued me a 25% refund and I was forced to file a credit card dispute! My friends booked thru air b&b and were instantly issued a FULL refund. I have had a horrible experience with HomeAway and will not plan to book with them in the future. When travel restrictions required my NYC trip to be cancelled, the renter would not return any of my calls or messages through the app. The HomeAway customer service has been horrible and unable to help me in any way. At this point it looks as though the renter will just keep avoiding me and I will be out several thousand dollars with absolutely no help or protection from HomeAway. I am extremely disappointed with everything about this company and would recommend that others avoid their company at all costs.

If it would allow me to give NO STARS I would but in order to write a review I have to put ONE STAR.!!! I booked with them for what I thought was a beautiful property. Clara was never reachable. She responds when she wants to respond. I booked for a locked in price but wanted to add guest to my list as I saw it never took the full amount of people we had coming. I called and spoke with the owner and explained to him everything going on. That I wanted to add people to the list and one extra day on to my stay. He assured me my full price would stay the same, but the one extra day would be added on at my locked in price of $143 a night. Okay cool, as expected.... A few weeks later I was going to make a payment and thank god I checked because my price had completely sky rocketed & was totally different then what I was aware of. March 19th I questioned Clara and she never responded. I double questioned a few days after & hear nothing back until 2 days ago with a message of “reservation canceled”. Nothing else was explained. It’s also stating a refund for only $101 and not my full deposit. I have a statement from my bank of what was taken out from them and also screen shots of their policy from when I booked and what my total was & how I am to receive a full refund up until 30 days before my trip. (Which isn’t until the middle of September).!!! HORRIBLE SERVICE WOULD NEVER RECOMMEND THEM.!!!

I booked a stay in Pigeon Forge for April 1st. This was done on March 12th. My deposit and payment was taken. Later that night the booking was canceled. My deposit was refunded but not the big amount of $626.06. I have multiple times attempted to reach out to the property owners and the property manager with no response.

I cannot say enough about how disappointing my experience has been with HomeAway. I’ve spent SEVERAL hours on hold over a weeks length of time. Sometimes I’ve lasted over a half hour and have yet to get in touch with their customer service. I’ve already been spreading the word to friends and family about not using HomeAway. There’s not even an email address or online chat to get ahold of them. Do NOT book with them! If you find a property you like try to find it on a different App or go straight through the owners. Cannot express my disappointment enough! If it was an option I would not even give 1 star!

I originally booked an Airbnb with Ileana Martinez (Danny De la Parte) in Miami, Florida for Rolling Loud festival. As many places have shut down and events being postponed due to the Coronavirus, I cancelled my room. I knew that I would be getting back only 50% because I cancelled after 60 days. I cancelled and got confirmation from HomeAway app that the owner refunded me $274.61. However, I only received two different pending charges: one was in the amount of $154.24 and the other $20.37. I let owner know that all of my refund had not been pended to my account as well as my damage deposit refund. The other part of my question she answered was that the owners don't hold the damage refund HomeAway does. Ok, understandable. (I later did see HomeAway did refund the full damage deposit) However, where is the rest of the refund the OWNER is suppose to give? I had been writing Ms. Martinez and her response time was very punctual (always heard from her within hours even though she was not very helpful at all her response to almost everything I asked was call customer service) but when I began to ask her about the rest of the owner refund she stopped responding! As you can see what she refunded me is not 50% of what I've paid ($463.21) After no response from Ms. Martinez, I decided to try to reach out to HomeAway customer service. I called and waited 1 hour and 8 minutes before the call disconnected. I decided to call back and yet wait again. The same thing happened. Held for over an hour and call disconnected. Never got to speak with anyone. This was first time using HomeAway and I will never use it again. It looks like I am now going to have to dispute charges through my bank. I had originally had a vacation booked to Ft Myers Beach, FL when the owners canceled on me! It was a unpleasant and stressful experience to say the least. The owners wanted me to cancel my reservation on my end which I refused bc I was getting a warning saying I would lose my money so I contacted customer service! Thank goodness I didn’t listen to the owners as I would have lost my money they needed to cancel on their end and issue me a refund!! I was promised some assistance from Home Away to help find another property but after my initial conversation with them I have heard NOTHING! I have sent properties to them that I was interested in bc they offered me financial assistance to find another property due to the owner cancelling on me! I have had to change my entire vacation bc of this experience. I will not be going to Ft Myers Beach as all the remaining properties are out of my price range! Not too mention I haven’t had any forward progress from Home Away with any assistance!! Going through this process of having to search a place to stay and reading all the property reviews to ensure you are picking the right place is daunting; not to mention the surprise of the hidden fees is shocking! The fee schedule should be regulated!

This is a very long drawn out process. One would hope at the very least, that when you have filters in place that it may weed out some of the properties that don’t meet the criteria but there is still location, added fees and deposits that you have to consider and graph out accordingly. It is very infuriating to think you have the choices narrowed down to 5 or 6 just to find out the owner couldn’t even put the correct number of bedrooms in the title description. I’m on the verge of giving up.

Love using this app for vacation searches. It would be AWESOME if I could add a search word like “bikes”. Instead, I have to filter as best as I can and then read all the details. It would save a lot of time to have key word filters. Also, would love a feature that allowed you to choose 3 stays and then compare. Having 3 columns with check marks by all amenities offered would be so helpful.

I installed this app after repeated nagging by HomeAway, hoping it would make it easier to get access codes and property info when traveling. It completely fails at that; it’s just a wrapper for the website. I expected to have access to property info available offline, when I didn’t have cell coverage, but it didn’t do that. It was easy to click the wrong thing and end up on the Book now page for a property I already had booked - why didn’t it recognize I had a reservation starting that day? I deleted this app and won’t use again.

In the past I had good experiences but not in the last week. I had a friend drive by a property that I reserved and the pictures were not the same as current pictures on the website. Also owner of another property asked if he could stay in house with me the. Asked if I would send my ID thru text. I have screen shots of messages through the website and hoping I get full refund. If not I will give 0 stars. HomeAway could not find my reservation ID and was on the phone for quite some time. Not happy

We are trying to book ahead a year, as is needed in busy vacation areas. The majority of the properties we have requested further booking information on, come back with a MUCH higher rate than is on the site. They say their rates were not updated. I am beginning to think it is a bait and switch thing happening. ALL properties should have current information, or not even have a calendar available, if they have not posted and confirmed the pricing on it.

I am a regular user of HomeAway and appreciate their service however I have two major issues hat I believe will be their downfall if not addressed: 1. Fees are not transparent and are becoming out of control. Rather than recognizing the opportunity to compete with the Airbnb’s of the world on fees it is as if they instead just jacked up fees across the board. Further, because the “price per night” does not include the fees and charges across properties are inconsistent, the search experience is much more time consuming and frustrating than it needs to be. HomeAway should provide the option to see price per night with fees as a search option at a minimum which would at least increase transparency. 2. The app is buggy. This is in acceptable for a product/company at this scale. Get it together and only release updates when they’re properly tested. Simple features like “favorites” are not synchronized at times with the desktop. The funny thing is that this wasn’t a problem until they apparently recently updated the app because I used it in the past. The share favorites with someone has disappeared. The “draw area” for search (a nice idea) causes the app to crash regularly. None of this should be happening for a company like HomeAway.

Property owners and calendars

The HomeAway app is convenient, but there are a few things that could make it better. One very important thing that HomeAway needs to do is punish owners w a fee for not updating their calendars on a regular basis. The calendar/app says the property is available, so you submit a request. It can take a day for them to get back to you to say, “Oops, sorry, our days must be crossed. Can you shift your plans ahead 3 days?” Sure, I’ll just call the conference and tell them to postpone everything. And this happens over and over and over until you’ve wasted a week trying to book individual properties. In addition, the search function needs to be improved. It doesn’t include all possible properties, even though they make you think it does. For example, Pasadena & Altadena CA are adjacent cities. If you do a search for Pasadena, you might have 5 Pasadena properties & 1 from Altadena. This leads you to believe that there’s only one in range in Altadena. But then, do a separate Altadena search, and it gives you 4 additional properties! There’s got to be a better way to do the search on your phone.

I enjoy the application and it’s ease of use and our rentals have always been wonderful and exactly as described. I can easily and quickly filter on what I’m looking for, the prices are prominently displayed for clarity, instant booking is great and the ease of contacting the owner through the app is also top notch. I also like the ability to look at the cost breakdown, BUT here is where I PAY for all that convenience. This app used to be my go-to to find a reasonable, quality alternative to hotels! Not any more! Often the fees exceed the cost of the rental! What??? No, absolutely not, I won’t pay it, so I end up not booking with you more often than booking! The fees your app are charging owners are passed along to me and in some cases, are pushing prices WAY above even luxury hotels. The original purpose of the app has been lost. I am still giving the app a 4 because of all the great functionality. It’s a shame I can’t give it 5. Go back to your roots, lower the fees. Your model is inching out your original client base.

The two times I used HomeAway and didn’t have any issues with my reservation it worked just fine. However the third time there was some glitch with my reservation and I got double booked. One of the reservations I paid for, the other one I did not request so I did not pay for. I only inquired about availability and the Home Away app kept sending automatic messages assuming that I wanted to book and then annoyingly sending reminders for me to pay. I’ve tried in vain to find someway to cancel the erroneous booking. There is no way to get in touch with the human with HomeAway until after you finish booking. This has led to some tension between me and the person who’s home I’m trying to book. She keeps asking me to cancel so that her place is not showing up as busy in the calendar, I keep asking her to cancel so that I will stop getting annoying messages to pay for a booking I don’t want. The virtual assistant is useless on the in app chat. It can only regurgitate information that’s already available on the listing. Anything as simple as “how do I cancel pending reservations” seems to stump it!

There is no way to scroll down in the app to read ALL reviews. You have to go on a pc to the vrbo site to see all the reviews. This is a critical feature that is needed because not everyone has a pc and depends on the app. Very important review information is not seen and this is supposed to be one of the features that’s makes your site appealing. Also you can’t vote on helpfulness in the HomeAway app like you can on the vrbo website. This too is very important as owners can upvote good reviews by using other email addresses to push the good ones to the top. This is what is first seen when you go to reviews in the app. Again another reason why expoaing all reviews in the app is critical. We now have to pay a fee just to book with the site. So it’s time to start delivering features that allow a traveler to make the best informed decision. At some point not exposing all the reviews in the app is likely going to result in liability to homeaway if a decision is made on a property that had the information in a review that homeaway didn’t expose.

I was not able to access the property because the property owner completely scammed us. $530!! Home Away insisted that I had to go through the property owner even though she turned off her phone and refused to answer a combined total of 17 calls, texts, and emails. Property owner took my money at booking and was unresponsive and the place was not accessible. Home Away was rude in their attempt to help me and ended up putting me up in a terrible hotel in their pathetic attempt to “make it right”. They claim to be an advertising platform but they are obviously a middle-man to potential scammers because they obviously have access to the property accounts. They continue to allow this scamming property manager to continue renting through their site without any repercussions and leaving us with no choice but to accept their terrible excuse for a replacement. I didn’t even intend to do business with Home Away!! I booked through Expedia because they are usually reliable, and ended up getting them without my knowledge. Oh and they also don’t do refunds and don’t stand by the customer. They would rather cater to the scammers that post on their page. Worst experience EVER!

After booking previously without issue I found a rental through Home Away for a trip to Vancouver this past summer. I booked and was approved, then the renter contacted me outside of the app and asked to transact directly. It’s a VERY long story but I found this suspicious and asked Home Away for advice and if this was against their policies. Home Away responded that it was not against their policies and that the renter had great reviews and told me not to worry. Long story short, the renter is a HUGE scam artist who took me and many other Home Away customers for a ride. I was able to get a refund, and found other accommodations at 10:00pm at night in a strange city. I did however lose a lot of extra money due to a last minute desperate situation, I was put in harms way because of my dealings with some seriously shady people, and Home Away did NOTHING to help before or after the fact. I have contacted them after the event and sent details and further proof that they had done me and other customers a disservice. I guess they are too busy to be bothered because they never even followed up about my concerns. I will never use this service again.

In Hendersonville, a short drive to Asheville, NC. We had a wonderful stay, and felt at home right away. Nice sized covered front porch, with seating for four. House has been tastefully decorated, and we loved the ten foot ceilings, and all the charm of the place. Wood floors throughout, and even though the floors weren’t quite level in places, it really doesn’t matter. The kitchen was fully equipped, including both a regular coffee pot and a Keurig, and even a toaster and blender. Lots of blind covered windows let in lots of light, even on a cloudy day! Bed(s) were extremely comfortable, and extra linens and towels were provided. Washer, dryer, and dishwasher were definitely a plus. Everything was very clean. Nice neighborhood, a short walk to a great coffee shop in one direction, and just a few minutes to downtown Hendersonville, which is great! Restaurants, antique stores, and all kinds of small specialty shops. Wished we had more time to explore everything there was to discover. The owner was very quick to respond when I messaged. My one recommendation is that there should be some kind of steppingstones or sidewalk from the driveway to the front porch. We had quite a bit of rain during our visit, and our shoes got kind of wet in the grass, and then we wouldn’t have had to worry about tracking dirt and water inside. Still, in my opinion, a five star getaway. If it rains during your stay, just leave your shoes at the door!😁

I gave a 2 rating because we signed up for a property and found out the next day that the owner did not have it available at all and was unaware it was being shown on the HomeAway or VRBO sites. Luckily we were able to find another property for the same 2-day weekend, but the cost was $500 more and not as good a fit for our family. While completing the process of that reservation, HomeAway offered damage insurance to finish the payment but I thought I had seen a damage waiver cost in the original fees. The website didn’t allow me to go back to look at the previous steps to review before making the decision about damage insurance. Fortunately, a quick reply to a query I made to TurnKey explained the TurnKey damage waiver policy, so I was able to make an informed decision. We had a bad experience with a HomeAway rental in Montecito CA last year for a wedding in Santa Barbara. We documented our complaints for that experience. We are hoping for a better result this time in the same Santa Barbara area. We will be happy to raise our rating based on a better experience.

NOW HOME AWAY! Expedia aka Home Away charges a “service fee” to the renter(s) based on the price/day x total days you’re booking it for. VRBO let owners post vacation rentals & renters could contact owner directly. We did this for many years for 2 condos in Maui. I recently booked 2 different condos (prior condos were sold) and one owner used a Real Estate company’s property management to handle payments & other “vacation rental” needs on the island as they reside in Washington. Unaware of this till way later. I HAD to enter my cc info to reserve, Home Away bam gets their fee. It also said full payment due at time of booking. Done. NOPE! Got confirmation email from Home Away stating payment received a few times. Days later I get email from H A requesting payment. Then from the property management that I knew nothing about! What a hassle. Because H A stated “full payment at time of booking” and I had a difficult time getting direct contact info for the owner from H A I just found this to be such a hassle! HOME AWAY, owner info needs to be easily accessible with their rental posts! You don’t own these properties!! Just be careful fellow travelers.

Love the selection, pics and details. Easy to use and this is my go to app for finding a place to stay while on vacation. The only problem I've had with it is that sometimes there is conflicting info. For example, I put in my dates (which was 4 nights), it showed me my options, I picked an option and then it said the owners had a minimum stay requirement and gave me the option to contact the owners to see if they would make an exception. So I proceeded to do that when the next screen popped up for me to go ahead and book it. That is confusing and nobody wants to book something and then find out there was some sort of mistake and you don't have a place to stay after all. Another thing is that the fees are crazy high. You’ll think your paying one thing but by the time all the fees get added in your paying a lot more per night than what it looks. And the app doesn’t allow me to put in a property id# that I already know to pull up and see if it is available.

I was booking a cabin for a nice week getaway and the owner offered to give me a payment plan. He set up two payments and altered the price to what I’d be paying that day. Once I used the link provided for me, I put in my card information and the booking agency double charged me! I notified them of the problem and they placed a hold on my account. They said it would take 24-48 hours for them to let go of my money!! I went to the bank and the supervisor there said that they could get the money back to me quicker and all that HomeAway had to do was fax over a company letterhead stating that it was just a hold and that it is being released. I called HomeAway back and they said that they “ couldn’t “ do it, and that they don’t have the resources to. I was on the phone with representatives 7 different times just to get that answer. One representative even hung up on me. My money wasn’t release until 3 days later. The representatives that I talked to were very rude and unhelpful with the exception of one of them. I genuinely would not recommend this booking agency at all.

We recently rented a property listed at $55 a day we booked for 8 weeks they had the instant confirmation. At 2am we received a message from homeowner stating sorry not available for those dates money will be refunded. We start looking for a new rental and there it is available for the time frame we are putting into system but now for $65 a day. We called home away and they couldn’t seem to understand what we were saying there is a serious lack of English speaking reps when you call in. Now we are reading reviews before booking and keep finding repeatedly booked for months cancelled last minute by owner. Why do we have penalties for cancellations yet the owners do not? Why if the owner canceled repeatedly are they still allowed to advertise with you? We have heard from several people we know this has happened to them also. We have rented multiple homes through the years as have many of our friends but unfortunately your reputation is going down the drain because you are allowing this to continually happen.

We don’t care for having to put in our credit card info, just to confirm dates with property manager, then getting charged for each property inquiring on. We had to provide the info, in order to hit send for our message. Originally, we booked & paid for one property. Money came out, we got a confirmation & we thought we were booked/confirmed. But, we got a notice of a refund & a message from property manager/owner that the dates were actually not available, even though the online booking system said that they were & allowed us to book it. Not very happy that happened & that we now have to wait for our refund. So, that is why we are now asking for date verification!! We should not have to have our credit card info charged, until we’ve settled on the property we want. They are booking fast for June and we had to do multiple date availability confirmation requests. Has to be a better way, like it used to be.

This home is a jewel. It is spacious, very clean, beautifully furnished and well maintained inside and out. The kitchen is well stocked with everything one will need to prepare snacks or a meal. We had a Women’s Retreat and thoroughly enjoyed ourselves. There were 13 of us. We had plenty of sleeping space to sleep comfortably, as well as plenty of bathrooms. It is everything you would look for in a vacation rental. There are local stores nearby. It is easy to get downtown to San Antonio. This was our 4th Annual Retreat and this has been the best vacation rental we have stayed in thus far. Our goal is to visit a different state each year and I would not have any qualms in spending a 5th Annual Retreat in this home. Richard is awesome. If there was a 6 star rating, we will certainly give this home a 6 star rating!

HomeAway is my go to app for all vacation rentals. I have used the app for several years for houses in the Rocky Mountains on ski trip to beach getaways on the East Coast. The app is incredibly user friendly and makes communicating with rental owners about payments, check in procedures and check out a breeze. Recent searches, favorited properties and past trips are saved automatically which helps when looking through the endless options available. Other user reviews are extremely helpful when scoping out your next vacation spot. All properties I have rented through this app have been exactly, if not better, than advertised. In short...I’m hooked on HomeAway. Thank you for making a potentially stressful activity the last thing I worry about every time!

I tried booking a home through this organization in Canmore Alberta Canada. I had multitudes of problems and errors and got conned by the owner of the property and never received my $2000 security deposit back despite no damage done and the many broken things within the home. At $3000 per night for Theis Canmore property on silver tip road I expected more from Vrbo and home away. Instead I was treated with disrespect from the owner and multiple employees. I spoke with 5 different people and got nothing but run around! And the owner of this Canmore high end property is not a very nice person. A scam man! You would think vrbo would not permit and individual such as this to promote his home when he bullies his tenants and manipulates them them into signing a separate contract. Disappointing!! I will never use home away or vrbo again!! And I have rented several very high end properties through them. Vrbo should have backed me up considering their screw up!

It used to be easy to find an apartment, condo or house in the HomeAway app. In the last year, it has changed. Many listings are now for a room in a house (a la AirBNB), but there is no category for rooms. People list them as a studio, or more often as a 1 bedroom/1 bath apartment. Some people are listing each bedroom in a 4 bedroom house as a house (shared bathrooms and kitchen?! - I don’t want a dorm room!). You often have to wade through half the description to find out what is really offered. They have also added motel rooms. And, lastly, some have “kitchenettes” that are nothing more than a dorm fridge, sink and a microwave. There are also RV parking listings, no RV - just a spot on their driveway for $27/night! And an old single-wide mobile home where the owner and his dog would move to a neighbor while you are there - nicknacks, stacks of mail and dog hairs included at no extra cost... I’ve also found that prices are much higher this year, often 30-40% higher than equivalent places in past years. Searching always defaults to “HomeAway Sort”, rather than staying in the category you have used previously. It’s annoying, and requires more keystrokes. HomeAway needs to tighten up their policing of entries and improve search parameters, or they will lose customers. I am almost gone.

Seven of us from the Seattle area recently spent five nights in this wonderful home in Roschbach. We were four adults and three children, ages 10,10, and 12. My father immigrated from a town very near here many years ago. Besides wonderful times visiting with family, we took day trips to the Rhein, Heidelberg, and the Alsace. The home is spacious with ample room for all of us. We ate most of our meals on an outdoor deck and the kids had a yard to romp in. This area, the Pfalz, is not as famous as Heidelberg, Munich,or Berlin, but it is beautiful, peaceful wine country. My wife and I lived three years in Heidelberg and we know Germany well. If you are a group of five or more and wish to spend time in this precious part of Germany, I don’t see how you could top this home. Kurt Weis

I have a large family and we do our share of traveling. If you require more than one hotel room things get very pricey. I'm top of that, there are no "common areas" to visit with family in most hotel rooms. I love this app because it allows me to reserve homes or condos with multiple bedrooms and bathrooms to accommodate my family for a fraction of the cost I could pay at any hotel. Every reservation I have made has turned out wonderfully! The reviews are very helpful, and the rates are astounding. I recommend this to anyone traveling out of their home area for more than a couple of nights. You will save money and recognize so many more benefits over staying with a hotel! App is very user-friendly.

I have been using VRBO and Home and Away for 10+ years. We have book many a vacation homes as well as weekend trips. We have always found it easy to use. The pictures, description and reviews have always been accurate and helpful for finding accommodations that fit our needs. VRBO/Home andAway has also been great at handling problems with bookings. My daughter booked a spring break trip and the management company backed out within hours of her payment. VRBO/Home and Away got her money back in full within hours. I also have to compliment fellow users. Everyone seems to right excellent detailed reviews that really give insight to the property and their experience. That is so very helpful!

Barrier Island Retreat is a wonderful place to stay. Two of my daughters and I enjoyed our long weekend getaway so much. This apartment is adorable as well as comfortable, and the owners Deby and John are awesome. They do not hover around, but are always available and very knowledgeable about the area. The location is great, access to the beach very easy and just a short drive to St. Augustine makes Barrier Island Retreat the perfect place to stay. Not having a full kitchen was no problem for us. A very nice grill was available if we had chosen to cookout, but the refrigerator held all the cold foods we brought along and we brewed tea in the microwave. We do plan on making this place one of our go to, home away from home. Thanks again for a wonderful visit!

We were blown away when we walked into this beautifully appointed guest home. There was nothing lacking and everything was pristine, new, and of highest quality. Joerg was an outstanding host and was gracious about letting us stay another night. We certainly hope to be back. Plenty of room for privacy and to stretch out with 3 full bedrooms and baths. The hot tub and sauna are in the guest house, although the salt water pool is part of the main house. Property is less than a mile from a wonderful breakfast and lunch cafe, although the refrigerator and pantry were full of breakfast supplies had we chosen to make it. There was both an Expresso and a coffee maker. Just cannot say enough good things about this wonderful place.

The app it’s self is okay but the Listings can be a bit money hungry. No cancellations unless you pay a fee $$. Okay normal, but most places I’ve stayed at only charge that if you cancel day of or day before. You can’t cancel 60 days before without the cancellation fee (which is actually something you have to pay for ahead of time (like insurance) if you don’t think you can make it and in that case just don’t go) Places you can stay at look cheap but when you go to book the price just about doubles due to the owners fees, cleaning fees, alien abduction protection fees. You know, just the normal “let’s tack on more stuff that seems legit but it’s not.” I think it’s all so-so and eh but if you think you’re about to get a “deal” be prepared to pay extra just to have the lights turned on. Kidding but really though...

I love the app, it’s easy to navigate. My only frustration comes from selecting the perfect home that has no bookings on the calendar only to receive an email from the owner that it is not available. Then I go through the same process again!! Each time I try and book and probably go through a minimum of 3 that look available but the owner has failed to update their calendar- it’s very frustrating! I wish there was something that made them keep the calendar updated. When an owner tells me it’s not available, I usually respond with “how strange, the calendar shows it available, you better look into this great mystery!”

Our experience at this cozy and VERY CLEAN home was nothing less than perfect. We were not only able to enjoy the beaches, boat rental for the day, but also enjoy the home and some much needed family time. We brought our corn hole, grilled in the backyard, and were able to sit and enjoy a few family dinners. One of the best things was the location. We were not right in the middle of all the tourist areas, but able to enjoy them as we wanted. Several personal touches that made you feel welcome, as if you were at a home away from home!! Our family would recommend highly!!

Cannot recommend. I had been happily using and recommending HomeAway for years, but I’m uninstalling the app in Aug ‘19 because, for several months now, every time I need to find a place to stay, I end up getting annoyed and just using Airbnb instead because every listing on HomeAway is priced deceptively low, with extra fees added that dramatically increase the price of the stay. It’s become commonplace from Georgia to California. Friends of mine and even my mom have begun to say the same thing without me even mentioning it, so clearly this is a problem the average customer is facing and not just me. No longer using the app since price uncertainty such a problem. HomeAway: Do not allow home owners to list “$62/night” when it really will cost $150+. You’re allowing home owners to ruin your app’s experience.

Although it’s frustrating to log in sometimes, it doesn’t compare to the problematic customer service system. It is based out of this country and the customer. Serv. Reps. Don’t know how to handle problems...so they dont. I’ve been on VRBO since 2012 and recently they have completely computerized and algorithms based, so if you have one fussy renter who gives an unjust review because you didn’t have scissors in the kitchen, they will not consider you for advancement in their status. Or a woman who misread the deposit/insurance policy and when she contacted VRBO (international workers), they told them it wasn’t there problem and they should contact me? They got the money! When I addressed the issue with them via email, an automated email stated they would get back to me shortly...nothing

My wife and 17y/o son stayed at Casa de Banta for the second time during the last week in June 2018. It was the BEST HomeAway experience we have ever had. David & Libby were very accommodating and had some great restaurant recommendations. There were plenty of kitchen appliances, towels, and very comfortable furnishings. The outside patio area was a great place to have breakfast every morning and a glass of wine in the evening. It was nice having parking that was onsite in the middle of town. Walking distance to everything except to the beach. We will definitely be returning as St. Augustine is one of our favorite getaway places in Florida. I couldn’t of asked for a better way to spend my 60th Birthday!

Our stay in Vernazza at this property was great for the following reasons. The place is very clean, even the comforters smelled like they just came out of the dryer. Towels and bed linens were starch white. Pillows and mattress were very comfortable. The property owner was attentive to detail, leaving extra toiletries, kitchen items like teas, snacks, etc. We had plenty of towels and pillows, comforters. The owner has great communication and tells you how to work certain things. It's very easy to find and very close to the train station. For a family of 5 we were surprised at how roomy the place is. You will not be disappointed if you stay at this place.

We dealt with an issue on our stay with cleanliness and then with our safety and being harassed by an employee on the property after trying to address the issue of the house not being clean. Home away security and customer service have done absolutely nothing to resolve this issue. they could not get me any kind of refund even after hours of phone calls and emailing back-and-forth with customer service sending in photos of The employee harassing my personal Facebook weeks later. I am blown away by the lack of customer service. this is a hospitality industry you should care if your customers stay in a clean and safe environment. Home away claimed they are just a online booking platform and have no responsibility to anything that happens to the customer during their stay. Very concerning.

Absolutely beautiful. The owners have thought of everything for a comfortable stay. The cabin is super clean. (I am a clean freak so this meant a lot to me) down to the smallest little details. This was our first trip without kids or grandchildren in 30 years and we were not disappointed. The view is breathtaking. So relaxing. The bed was so comfortable you just didn’t want to get up. We will definitely be back. My absolute favorite smell in the world is fresh wood and that is exactly what I smelled when I first walked in. The fire pit and waterfall on the patio was mesmerizing. Can’t say enough about this beautiful peace on earth. God bless

Blue Nest ‘ is definitely a paradise for a peaceful , quite wonderful vacation for the whole family ... this beautiful house has everything you could ever imagine , just pack up & go , the deck is outstanding with his view , we spent just about our entire time out on the deck for breakfast - watching the surfers at sunset , brunch and evenings just absorbing the gorgeous ocean view with the relaxing sounds of the waves .. it was for my Sons gorgeous beach wedding which was located next door to us , very convenient because we had several elderly people staying with us , the owner & management staff was excellent in every way !

I book a condo for week in Wildwood Crest New Jersey. We wanted to go down as a family and all stay at the same place instead of hotel rooms which we usually did. I booked the condo in September and paid $1670 on it. The end of May a few days befor rest of payment was due I got a email saying my reservation was canceled with no explanation!!!!! Needless to say we were all very disappointed I tried to book other places in the same area in around the same price range but could not find anything. I received no help from app and owner of property would not respond to my emails !!!!

This is a beautiful house but the views are the best I’ve seen for a vacation stay. Every window gives you a view of the mountains. It’s also close to Trail Ridge Road, Grand Lake, and shopping. My son-in-law gave me the best Colorado vacation yet. I’ve had many of them in my seventy-one years but the house and surrounding views were relaxing and exciting as well. I loved the sun rising over the mountains and the deer eating around in the trees close to the house morning and evening. There were seven of us and we had plenty of room for alone time and family time. I highly recommend staying at this lovely home.

I am getting ready to go on my third trip to Italy. I have used Homeaway properties in Rome, Milan, Florence, and also Lucern Switzerland 🇨🇭. Each one was different and unique and located exactly in the areas where I wanted to stay. Dealing with the hosts of the property have been pleasant and easy. I made a wonderful new friend of my first host in the Rome and will be seeing her again next year. I highly recommend home away, it is the only service I use when I am looking for a place to stay when I travel. Whether I am traveling alone or with my family I can always find exactly the right property!

I have been using HomeAway/vrbo since at least 2007. All but one of our experiences have been great and without issue, but recently I’ve noticed a pattern of increasing fees in all of the fee categories pet,cleaning,service fee, etc. I feel that an advertised price of $175/nt should not turn into $300 plus and it has, with increasing frequency. This inappropriate greed will cost this industry and its people in the long run. I hope that HomeAway will address this or change its teaching in the workshops it offers to property owners. There are a lot of good people still on here but just be aware of everything and not just the cost per night you see with the picture of the property.

They “changed platforms” mid reservation requiring 2 days of multi-hour, multi-party calls. The homeowner, me, the trip insurance company, my bank, and the homeowner’s bank had to get involved to straighten out the mess. 2 of the 5 homeaway reps were good to work with; others did things like put me on hold 16 minutes before they disconnected the call and I had to start over with a different agent. I was given conflicting information from different customer service reps. They nice ones kept apologizing for all the issues but never offered to waive or reduce the $499 service fee on the new reservation that ultimately was decided to be the solution. I literally missed work for 2 days dealing with this mess. I still have more follow up to make sure my first trip is properly refunded.

I use this app frequently when looking for a vacation rental. I find it easy to use and very helpful to access info on a place I've booked. What I don't like is that the reviews on the rentals do not show a date so there is no way to know how old they are and I really depend on the reviews for help in making a decision. Another thing I don't like is that you have to put dates in to see if they are available. I'm pretty sure if you don't use the app but use the home away web site you can just check availability without entering specific dates which I find much easier and much more helpful. Fix these two issues and I will gladly give it five stars! ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐

I am hoping some developers will start making 3rd party apps to replace lame apps like this. VRBO has already cheated its hosts by defaulting on prepay contracts and a company mission of. A prepay platform. Now they are making local map searches very difficult with hidden map functions. Hosts want my and pay for a local geographical searchable rental. What a bummer to pay a company for marketing your rental, only to find attempted searches suggesting other rentals outside of of your area. We have about 19 rentals in the Big Sur area and VRBO shows 800! This last version requires reconfiguration of map, filter and outline function nearly impossible for the average user. More inventory in an area means more sales and fees for VRBO. A convenient result of NOT updating means no map or search functions. Most people do not update apps that often... especially power users that might be able to figure out the later lame versions. I am trying to push people over to airbnb platform, but they have done the same sneaky “updates” for profit gains. You might ask how suggesting an area NOT asked for will benefit a traveler or a host! Both end up disappointed, with no refund options.

You guys should learn from airbnb on dealing with the current events of this world. Your policy for refunding cancellation lacks common sense and are basically encouraging the property owners keep our money. I really do wonder how many property owners just openly gave back a full refund, maybe I just met the only one thats not willing to give my money back. You guys need to do more than highly encourage the owners to give a full refund. Why don't you take another step for your customers to get their money back guaranteed. Your highly rated competitor does this, but what have you done for your customers? Oh you sent the property owners an email highly encouraging a full refund. I could have done that, but you guys pay your employees to do that. Just pay me. I will do it, I need a job right now anyways.

review update ( after developer response, read original below): I tried what you are suggesting for 4 weeks. I was calling and texting with support, and I got maybe five “case numbers” and the issue got pushed to the “experts” maybe three times. Every single time the agents told me that I’m fully in the right because I’m canceling within the window. None of them did anything useful. They said the owner isn’t responding to them. They threatened the owner with blocking the account, but it seems that was ignored too. Original review: I booked a place and tried to cancel within the cancelation window. The owner didn’t want to pay me back and HomeAway support was totally useless and evasive. Just use Airbnb. You can cancel yourself! Horrible! I’d give them 0 stars if I could
Pricing problems

I used to use Homeaway and VRBO all the time. The last couple times though have been very frustrating. The fees aren’t obvious... and aren’t a small matter... a $250 a night (2 nights) charged my credit card for $1259. Of course that includes a cleaning deposit that will be refunded- but since I am not staying until next summer... that is a whole year where they get to use my money. Second, and more importantly, this is the second time in a row that I have been notified by the owner that their fee schedule wasn’t up to date. So instead of $250, it is $450 a night with a 4 night minimum. Meanwhile, I am getting confirmation emails from HomeAway and telling me I am booked. Can the owner just arbitrarily increase the price like that? Am I booked or not??? This is not worth the hassle.

I made a reservation without creating an account, which just asks you for your email once. Having done that, I reserved and paid thru Apple Pay, and was informed I would be notified if the owner confirmed the reservation. I never received a confirmation, then later found out I had still been charged $400 because the owner confirmed, but I never received the confirmation because I made a typo when entering my email. The app only asked for my email once, never had me re-type it, and did not do anything when they received bounce-back messages for the email address I accidentally did enter (I misspelled gmail as gamil). They still charged me the full amount and made no effort to make it right or change their protocol to protect others from this happening.

What we liked about this little place was it was within walking distance from the beach and many different restaurants. You don’t have to worry about trying to find parking or pay for parking. I would highly recommend this place to any couple that is looking for a nice getaway. We’re a couple that likes to be on the go and this location gave us easy access to the main Highway which enabled us to travel to all our activities. We would defiantly recommend this rental to our friends and family members. I would also like to say that if you have any questions, just send a message to Fabrice & Sabrina and they will respond well within an hour. Our trip to Florida was filled with adventure, meaning our fights were not on time and the whole time I keep in touch with them. They also checked in on us to see if we had arrived at their rental okay. Great people to work with. Ralph

I reserved HomeAway location which I had to cancel due to work relocation. I have my cancellation request but was charged as a "no show". I've been trying to reach a resolution for months now. I have the hardest time reaching someone regarding my refund. The times I have spoken with someone I was told the issue would be resolved. I've been dealing with this for at least about three months now. I feel no closer to a resolution and don't have much faith I'd ever get this resolved. Despite the issues I stayed at a different HomeAway Location, which I loved. I was told my deposit would be issued shortly after my stay. When contacting the home owner I was told I should've received my deposit weeks ago. Still I've yet to get a refund for my cancellation or my deposit.
Great app missing one feature

I love VRBO and Homeaway. We’ve been using both for many years and have great memories vacationing at a comfortable home in plenty of towns and cities. We take our dogs when it’s a drivable distance so I love the pets accepted filter option. Being able to create favorites folders when searching for an upcoming trip works great, but not being able to create new folders within the app is a big miss. A user must login on a computer in order to create a new destination favorite folder to be able to save properties from the app. This feature needs to be added to the app.
