Description
Piano companion is a music theory app which helps songwriters, producers, teachers and their students. It’s a flexible piano chords and scales dictionary with user libraries, reverse mode, the circle of 5ths, chord progression builder with common patterns. If you can’t remember the name of a piano chord or scale, this app helps you to find it by keys or using your external midi keyboard. For example, just press C, G and you will get C Major as the first piano chord in the search result. If you don’t see a piano chord or a specific scale, you can create a custom piano chord or scale and use it for chord charts or your user library. The Piano companion app shows chord and scale notes on the grand staff, degrees, relative scales, intervals, fingering for both hands in major and minor scales – and you can contribute your own custom fingering too. You can practice scales in different keys and clefs, practice progressions. Additionally, you can listen to how a scale or chord sounds in the loop or arpeggiated. You can see the list of compatible chords in the selected scale or list of compatible scales for a selected chord. The app helps you to compose, practice progressions and experiment with different chord progressions using our Chord progression Builder with relative or common chords. Key features: - 1500+ piano chords, up to 6th inversions such as major, minor, diminished, augmented, sevenths, etc. - 10,000+ scales, such as Ionian (major), Aeolian (minor), Dorian, Phrygian, Lydian, Mixolydian, Locrian, Harmonic minor, Melodic Minor, chromatic, pentatonic, blues, etc. - Chord progression builder with scale patterns (chord sequencer) - Interactive Circle of Fifths with grand staff and relative scales - Ability to input your own custom chords and organize your own chord charts and library - External midi keyboard support for reverse mode - midi output with the ability to connect your favorite DAW (Ableton, Garage Band, etc.) with Piano companion - List of available chords in Circle of Fifths, practice common chords. - Popular key notations: English, Italian, German, Japanese, Russian, etc. - Shows chord and scale in different octaves on the grand staff with treble and bass clef - Analytical labels: Secondary Dominant and Secondary Leading-Tone - Common degrees: Tonic, Supertonic, Mediant, Subdominant, Dominant, Submediant, Leading tone (in Major scale) / Subtonic (in Natural Minor Scale) - Displays compatible chordsscales - Ability to create custom chords or modify existing ones - Audio support: the ability to play a chord in the loop or arpeggio; ability to play a scale in the loop - Arpeggio in the chord progressions - Relative chords in chord progressions - You can create your own scale fingering and have the ability to use community scale fingerings - Custom chord libraries and chord charts - Ability to create favorite scales - Chord Intervals: Unison, Perfect Fifth, Major Third, Minor Third, etc. Has 1 year subscription for $1.99. When I try to change the key to basic G major to look for scales it directs me back to C for some reason whether it’s by accident or on purpose. This app is broken

Extremely helpful and I wish I found it sooner!!
by brownrICE1233 on 2018/10/30 06:25
Within the time that I have discovered this application to now i can already tell how valuable of a resource this is going to be, especially taking university level music classes. Any struggling student just take the time to look for other resources to develop the necessary skills and with so much information to learn it can be an extremely daunting task. However Piano Companion has all that information and more within the basic version alone, including a virtual piano, Chord Progression generator, and even a Chord Dictionary! The only suggestion I have is redesigning the presentation of the info, particularly in the Chord Dictionary section where it has lots of helpful things like piano diagram of the chords along with quality and an audio snippet of said chord when tapped on, however there is an overwhelming amount of information all at once when taking into account the diatonic chords, 9th, 13th chord, etc. When i opened the app initially i was immediately intimidated by it but after really looking through it i was able to decipher what i needed vs what was there because it simply exists. Cutting out the fluff with help streamline the use of the app and the user will have a much more straightforward experience, no explanation or intimidation (ideally). Still overall I believe this application will give me the boost i need in my classes and really improve/expand my knowledge as a musician. 10/10 would recommend.

Major 7 is missing, midi save not working
by Tmidiman on 2017/06/04 21:55
I was really hoping this would be the piano app I was looking for. I create my own chords and I need a mind I file when I'm done. Imagine my surprise when I found they didn't even have a major 7 chord in their dictionary. I tried to add one, it shows it's there, but it's not available in progressions. Then there was no midi export as they stated, well the button doesn't work. I don't mind paying top dollar for a good app, if it works. This One's not there yet.
Fabulous Resource
by kazmyr on 2017/05/27 02:21
I love that the chord selected also shows what it looks like on both treble and bass clef for easy music writing. A bit clunky but a boatload of info is worth it.

What it does for you.
by OhItsJustJose on 2016/04/28 02:13
This app does not teach you theory. I figured I'd get this out of the way. This app assumes you have some theory knowledge and gives you a VERY GOOD reference book in the form of an app.
So incredible

Wasted my money
by Mongo2112 on 2016/02/16 03:23
I bought the Pro upgrade thinking I could easily chart out songs. Every time I try to put in the notes I need, it gives me pages of alternative chords and won't just takes the notes that I know are correct. I get it that this is a benefit for some, but when you need a simple way to get a song charted verbatim, this is useless. I don't need theory or inversions, I need to chart chords. I wasted $5. I don't care about the money as much as the need for a tool to get work done. I have a pile of songs to learn and I don't read staff or know piano. I just know what I hear and can play it. I just need to chart it and move on... Any apps out there that can do this?
Soooo helpfullll!!!!

Awesome Reference App!!!
by Babarambaba on 2015/12/27 12:58
I purchased this app as a reference tool since I took piano lessons as a kid, quit, and still can't play piano. Although it's a bit confusing to navigate at first, I can now see the true value of it!
Very Comprehensive app!
by GuitarWorld on 2015/12/20 15:37
I like the app! It is a great reference guide. It has every scale known to man and possibly some aliens. It can be a bit clumsy to navigate through, but there is so much in the app I'm not sure how that would be improved. Take the time and learn it. Enjoy!
Very useful!

Best for Songwriting & Beginner Theory
by zinchiang on 2015/07/26 23:53
Super comprehensive and logical layout. I use it for my song writing every day when I need to look something up. My friend uses it to learn theory. Pretty nifty little tool that packs in a bunch of features although a phone screen is such a small space to view all of the information on.
Great!

This app working great for me, it's been pretty clutch.
Worthless
by Thisgamesucks1000 on 2015/02/12 06:19
The first thing I tried to do was change the root note and it said I needed to upgrade to do it. Unless your dream is to only be able to hear a C Major, don't waste your time

by Wendoid on 2014/11/30 21:13
" how to notate a B9 chord with the 9th in the bass" "What chords can one make with these 5 notes? "Why does this chord resolve to this?" These ?'s and many more made easier to answer with this app. Never attempt first time analysis of a major work without it.

Writing and decoding music
by musicmanENG on 2014/10/21 16:45
I use this app most when I am about to set up a score of music. The shear amount of information in this free app is incredible. I used this app on multiple occasions to figure out what key a score was written in and what type of scales were used in runs. Let me provide an example, from the movie The Terminal, the main soundtrack is written in a D minor key, and towards the end of the song the lead clarinet plays a D genus diatonicum veterum correctum (yes this is a real thing) scale pattern. Application is very helpful

Good, but am I missing something?
by State00 on 2013/05/03 15:35
Very cool, awesome to compile chords when on the go without an instrument. But am I missing something? Every time I hit a chord in the dictionary, it takes me to a details screen. Makes it annoying to go back and forth when you're comparing chords. Does the pay version allow you to stay on the main dictionary screen and strike chords in sequence without taking you to the details?

Invaluable app

Major 7 is missing, midi save not working
by Tmidiman on 2017/06/04 21:55
I was really hoping this would be the piano app I was looking for. I create my own chords and I need a mind I file when I'm done. Imagine my surprise when I found they didn't even have a major 7 chord in their dictionary. I tried to add one, it shows it's there, but it's not available in progressions. Then there was no midi export as they stated, well the button doesn't work. I don't mind paying top dollar for a good app, if it works. This One's not there yet.

Very helpful!!

Crash issue - chord progression key change
by Werdrath on 2018/12/18 20:29
Great app in theory, but very confusing and many many pages to get lost in while just trying to get a couple chords noted down. Takes some getting used to

I would love it if you could add a sample for each scale. It would make this perfect.
Needs fixing
by somedude1722 on 2020/02/17 21:21
When I try to change the key to basic G major to look for scales it directs me back to C for some reason whether it’s by accident or on purpose. This app is broken

👍🏼
by _ReisPieces_ on 2016/06/23 14:22
This app is very good and helpful. It gives you all the chords you could possibly play and even gives you a piano to play on. Even a reverse look up and many other helpful things. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ for this app.

I like the app! It is a great reference guide. It has every scale known to man and possibly some aliens. It can be a bit clumsy to navigate through, but there is so much in the app I'm not sure how that would be improved. Take the time and learn it. Enjoy!

This app does not teach you theory. I figured I'd get this out of the way. This app assumes you have some theory knowledge and gives you a VERY GOOD reference book in the form of an app.
Awesome Reference App!!!

I purchased this app as a reference tool since I took piano lessons as a kid, quit, and still can't play piano. Although it's a bit confusing to navigate at first, I can now see the true value of it!

I love that the chord selected also shows what it looks like on both treble and bass clef for easy music writing. A bit clunky but a boatload of info is worth it.

" how to notate a B9 chord with the 9th in the bass" "What chords can one make with these 5 notes? "Why does this chord resolve to this?" These ?'s and many more made easier to answer with this app. Never attempt first time analysis of a major work without it.
