ScaleBank: Guitar scales
Description
ScaleBank puts scales in your pocket. Major, minor, pentatonic. Play guitar better, design new riffs and practice anywhere. Includes acoustic and electric guitars. And full support for left-handed players. Scroll up and down a full 24-fret fretboard, while you play crisp, clear audio samples of all 16 included scales. Support for Major, Minor, Melodic Minor, Melodic Major, Whole Tone, Pentatonic Major, Hexatonic Blues (you might call it "Pentatonic Blues", or just "Blues", but there are six notes, so it's "Hexatonic"), Pentatonic Minor, Dorian, Phrygian, Lydian, Mixolydian, Locrian, Egyptian, Persian, and Enigmatic scales in all keys.
Love it!

Ultra-useful Scale app 👍👊👊
by ruskoberger.com on 2019/12/07 22:33
This app does almost everything I could want...simply, and quickly. Handy as all getout. Three things I'd add (I'm sending the devs a req): 1. Scale degrees of all notes. 2. Add the Relative Minor. 3. Have a tap & hold drop-down for the scale types. This way you could see the fretted notes change in an A-B'ing kind of way, because visualizing scale shapes are important during memorization, and this'd be one extra little tidbit of help. But these are just small wishes within a solid and quality app.
Great for learning the fretboard
by Indianajoe65 on 2019/11/29 13:22
This is a great way to see and memorize all the scale patterns on the fretboard.
App worth buying!
by Raven Darque on 2019/11/28 18:35
So I gave this app 4 stars, but it’s really 4.5 because the app is close to perfection. There’s always room for improvement and things rarely hit 5 for me but saying that, this app is worth buying as it lays out a multitude of scales rather nicely in a manner that is easy to understand for beginner to advanced. The amount of scales are more than you’ll ever need to become a great player (it even has Egyptian and Enigmatic scales!). A GREAT NEW FEATURE is the fact that they’ve added play-along backing tracks which allows you to practice the scales in a real-world context—invaluable in my opinion, to actually give you real experience of the scale. Here’s things that I wish would be added to the app: 1) I wish it gave us more customization options, simple things such as choosing the background and fretboard colors etc. Granted this isn’t the most important thing, but for people with vision issues, or just people who like to organize information by color, this option would be invaluable. 2) The ability to choose what info shows up on each note in the scale. So rather than just note names and finger suggestions, I’d like to be able to show the 3rd, root, 5th, 7th etc within the scale. Currently the root is highlighted in blue, a wonderful way of separating things and giving us more info, but if we could also simply choose the note info we wish to see, it would complete this otherwise near perfect visual information. 3) Also, some sort of CAGED inclusion would be a great feature and would go a long way to making this THE NECESSARY app for guitar players. A way to outline the correct chord from the CAGED system within each scale shape would be brilliant. It could be in the form of a colored circle around the correct chord notes, outlining the chord itself within the scale shape already showing. 4) Speaking of guitar players, if you want to make this app more universal, include a Bass guitar section or make another app geared towards bass guitar players specifically. That would help you rule both instruments in the app domain. The fact that you can request a feature from within settings in the app is a great idea and shows that the makers are happy to listen and implement positive changes. Anyway, great app and thanks a bunch for making it!

Worth the 2.99 for the premium version, a necessity for any beginners looking to learn scales and modes. Best app out there.
Great app!
by Storm&Doom on 2019/07/20 21:40
Versatile, fun, and it grows with you. You do have to apply yourself to get the full benefit. Scales are the foundation. If you’re serious about learning scales, get it. If you’re not sure, get it. It’ll be there when you’re ready. And pay for premium. It is a hundred times better. You’ll see ten minutes into dabbling with the free version.

Great guitar reference

This full app for less than $6 is amazing. So easy to find things about chord and scale progressions. Well thought out and intuitive! Great app for guitarists.

Downloaded and deleted on the same day. There are no instructions and, unless there’s a secret button someplace, no way to declutter the keyboard to get an idea of any chord structures or scale sequence. Complete waste of time.
Don’t waste your money
by fijrfjuokvgh on 2019/05/14 03:42
If you have already downloaded and paid for the upgrades for the ChordBank app then you have everything this app has to offer except for one scale mode called enigmatic which is a useless mode.
Good job 👏🏻
by Nathaniel DePaula on 2019/04/20 23:56
This app is very helpful and useful to those who want to get back into their roots of guitar. Worth every penny! ✌🏻

Best source for all scales
by on3racing on 2019/02/13 03:01
After trying multiple apps and downloading files and PDFs this is the easiest and most comprehensive I have found. Makes seeing the relationships between keys much easier. Pay the couple bucks and get the full edition and you will be very happy with the amount of information you get.
Abandoned
by Axiomagical on 2019/02/07 17:35
If you want to support this dev, do it in ChordBank. If you decide to pay to unlock all scales, doing it in that app will still allow you to unlock other features, whereas if you do that here, you would have to pay twice to later unlock all the chord and scale features in ChordBank, which is just this app plus a lot more. I just found another app called Chord! that does everything that this app and everything that ChordBank does for way cheaper (though it is sans the jam tracks). I get more info faster with the other app.
Great App! Poor “App Support” for How-to!
by Swade83 on 2018/12/04 23:42
It is a very well-made app and extremely useful. However, I had to take off a full star because of a very sketchy website instructions. If you click on to write a review you get an option to see app support. The App Support page is very very basic and leaves unanswered questions. The Q&A page is a joke; it does not ask questions relevant to the app. I could come up with quite a number of useful questions that would actually pertain to questions that users may find unclear. Furthermore, this app support could be drastically improved by adding how to videos for each feature. I am convinced they would sell many more premium Versions if they simply took a little time to make their app support site much more useful.
Just downloaded the pay version and it doesn’t work.
by waltyb on 2018/12/04 16:40
Not only does it not work, when I report the bug I get an error message. If I dont get a direct response to this in the next hour, I’ll recommend to AVOID this app.
Cool app but...
by theJesusHorse on 2018/11/22 21:43
Unfortunately, the app doesn’t disable the iPhone’s power saving mode, so the phone screen will automatically turn off after a bit and the app will stop.

Solid resource, UI needs update
by ahhlvin on 2018/10/29 08:36
This is an amazing resource for anyone learning or refining their knowledge. However, the user interface seems really outdated for iOS 12, I feel like I’m 5-6 years in the past when iPhone 4s was at their peak. I really want to love this app. Please update the UI!
Needs some improvements but great app!
by Dr_J_Wasser on 2018/10/14 01:00
Great backing tracks and I find them very useful for practicing. Some suggestions would be adding landscape mode to see the scales as you would on the actual guitar. Also please keep adding backing tracks such as blues shuffle, classic metal such as Black Sabbath, wider array of rock ones. Thanks and please keep adding!
Nice!
by Anthony Fortuna on 2018/10/12 09:11
Great app for a quick and responsive practice sesh. I wish I had this when I first started out; it takes you right up the neck with scale patterns in every key, the tonic notes are highlighted, and you can explore the circle of fifths, bringing theory and practice together in a simple yet effective way.
Perfect

I have been playing guitar since I was 14 yrs. old. I just turned 69, I use this app with students and fellow musicians. It’s a great tool for when I write and work in the studio with musicians and bands I track, mix and master. Well worth the investment if you’re are serious about your knowing your instrument.

I really enjoy being able to view the scale patterns while playing to the provided backing tracks. I find I am able to memorize the scale patterns much more quickly using this app over other methods of learning I have tried in the past and it makes learning scales fun!
Play Along Update Is Amazing.
by srvntyhwh on 2018/03/27 00:44
I always wanted a way to practice a scale with a sample track, and this lasted update has that! I’m learning scale more quickly and I’m have fun while doing so. There are so many styles like, Jazz, blues, and rock samples to play along with. And you can also request a track. I have tried this option yet. This is definitely worth the in-app purchase.
Fantastic app

This is an easy to use all-in-one app that can really help you practice all sorts of scales along the neck. Without buying the upgrade, however, you are very limited. But in my opinion, the upgrade is very much worth buying.
Great app!

Very helpful app
by johnnonamedoe on 2017/02/15 09:26
I'm a beginner guitarist learning primarily from YouTube. Early on I bought ChordBank and have loved the quick reference guide that it is. ScaleBank, with its clear and easy position guide, will likely be my go to app for the style of playing that appeals most to me.
Fast references, fast variations, great tool
by Capt Ivan Danko on 2017/02/14 10:26
Ive been using this off and on for close to four years now and is has continued to be helpful from my early stages to my current stage of guitar proficiency. Reverse chord finder was a great addition when they implemented it some time ago. If you're passionate about guitar, i suggest a circle of fifths tattoo on your forearm and this app on ur phone. Also tenuto, theory, panotuner, and ScaleBank apps. Tab pro is also good for learning covers. Keep learning and find enjoyment from the simple lessons!
Excellent app, great study aid
by Alec Bourne on 2017/02/01 15:41
I've been using this now for a couple of years. I'd highly recommend it. If anything could be improved I'd say views for fingering both 3 note per string, and caged forms would be advantageous.

Solid app for any player
by J Bahr on 2017/01/19 12:05
I love this app. It's perfect for helping to practice or noodle around. It's so much better to have than to google images for scales. Really hoping a similar app comes along for arpeggios (hint hint - LOL)
Best for deep guitarists

Anytime I have some sort of writer's block or have a tune in my head but can't quite get it out, I turn to this magnificent little helper and I'll always find a good scale, or smtn comparable or SOMEthing that will just click by having seen the scale laid out the way this app does. Absolutely get the full version of it!

by Y'whatevah on 2017/01/15 23:22
Only having the ability to see one position at a time is awful. Really liked this app and used it all the time. Now I'm better off getting full scales somewhere else. Let's bring back the full view so I can bring it back to 5 stars!
Useful tool

Directions?!
by Thecloudybanana on 2016/09/07 05:54
Hey guys this looks like an awesome app and if I wasn't such a total guitar noob, I'd be able to see it in its full awesome glory. Unfortunately, I'm a totally noob and am having trouble understanding how exactly I can use this. These are scales. What order do I play these notes in? Why are there so many notes? When I put it into do-re-mi mode, sometimes not all the fa's and la's and ti's are there... Why?! 😅 I don't know anything about music theory, but willing and wanting to learn, which is one of the reasons I downloaded the app. ;).
Must have reference for guitar players
by 5150MN on 2016/08/20 01:10
This app completely takes the guesswork out of scale shapes and modes. You will still need to understand how to apply this knowledge, but, this app will give you a head start. Many trained professionals over-complicate how scales and modes are related. Some of these folks have written reviews about how this app violates musical theory because it doesn't show the sequence and which not to start on. Hogwash! Did you ever hear Joe Satriani or Larry Carlton play through a scale in order? Of course not! What a bore that would be! This visual is just what I needed. Great app, provided you know the basic scale shapes and can pick them out of this chart. The "key" is watching for where the root note lands.
Awesome

When you buy an app you at least want the app do what it says it's going to do, and this app does it flawlessly! As a new guitar player learning to play on your own without lessons is frustrating to say the least and finding useful and reliable means of teaching yourself is critical so if your new to guitar and want a quick easy convenient way to learn scales do yourself a favor and get this app it will save you hours of agony and get you playing the guitar faster!

Hard to use
by JustinOring on 2016/01/15 03:52
First off you get one scale for free and any others you have to pay for and they don't say how much. You have to go to the App Store to see how much in app purchases are. I'm a beginner and can't figure out what order to play the notes. It just displays all the notes. No instructions. It does me No Good.
Bought it and now it's asking me to pay again for premium.

Great app for learning scales!
by Bimbo lv on 2015/07/04 17:44
This is a really cool app, and it works very well. I have no complaints because its does exactly what its promises. If they were to update or change anything I would suggest an option to display notes in music theory style.
Scales? More like notes on fretboard

Pro version lost on upgrade to iPhone 6+
by ValentineArchitect on 2014/11/21 22:57
I paid for the pro version but lost it on upgrading to iOS 8 on my new phone. As other reviewers note sharps, flats are not handled correctly in terms of notation. The app has potential but is not worth paying money for.
👎
by kyleplarson on 2014/09/18 16:56
Pretty bad. Not sure they thought this through before putting it up.
Musically inaccurate - don't spend money on this.
by Tangle Eye on 2014/09/07 14:06
Any musician should know that flats should not be used in scales where the key signature is made with sharps (G, A, E, etc.). This app violates that rule 100% of the time. That makes it useless as a teaching and reference tool. The display simply shows all notes that would be included in a scale. It does not show the order or pattern to play it. These things coupled with no support make the app pretty useless. I would not recommend it - certainly not for any payment involved.
Waste of money

Furthermore, this app support could be drastically improved by adding how to videos for each feature. I am convinced they would sell many more premium Versions if they simply took a little time to make their app support site much more useful.
Fast references, fast variations, great tool

Ive been using this off and on for close to four years now and is has continued to be helpful from my early stages to my current stage of guitar proficiency. Reverse chord finder was a great addition when they implemented it some time ago. If you're passionate about guitar, i suggest a circle of fifths tattoo on your forearm and this app on ur phone. Also tenuto, theory, panotuner, and ScaleBank apps. Tab pro is also good for learning covers. Keep learning and find enjoyment from the simple lessons!
Play Along Update Is Amazing.

Best source for all scales

After trying multiple apps and downloading files and PDFs this is the easiest and most comprehensive I have found. Makes seeing the relationships between keys much easier. Pay the couple bucks and get the full edition and you will be very happy with the amount of information you get.

I've been using this now for a couple of years. I'd highly recommend it. If anything could be improved I'd say views for fingering both 3 note per string, and caged forms would be advantageous.
Super solid app

Really well done app for scales, and as a plus the developers listen to the people that use it

Great App
by rwbarker on 2017/01/24 11:51
Just like its stablemate, ChordBank, this is hands down the best scale trainer I have seen. The backing tracks, while not the best, are still a nice touch. Good job!
Solid app for any player
by J Bahr on 2017/01/19 12:05
I love this app. It's perfect for helping to practice or noodle around. It's so much better to have than to google images for scales. Really hoping a similar app comes along for arpeggios (hint hint - LOL)
Best for deep guitarists
by Kensh5 on 2017/01/17 22:49
Anytime I have some sort of writer's block or have a tune in my head but can't quite get it out, I turn to this magnificent little helper and I'll always find a good scale, or smtn comparable or SOMEthing that will just click by having seen the scale laid out the way this app does. Absolutely get the full version of it!
Good tool to learn scales
by 6 stars no problem on 2017/01/16 02:06
Teaches scales and provides backing tracks so you can learn to use the scale to play solos that fit with backing tracks.
Big step backwards!
by Y'whatevah on 2017/01/15 23:22
Only having the ability to see one position at a time is awful. Really liked this app and used it all the time. Now I'm better off getting full scales somewhere else. Let's bring back the full view so I can bring it back to 5 stars!
Useful tool

Another bait and switch

Please don't pretend the app is "free" when you can't do anything unless you purchase the "upgrade". Just be honest and stop wasting everyone's time.

If your a beginner or a virtuoso this is a great app to have

Great app for quickly finding and learning scales. Excellent resource, easy to use.
Hard to use
by JustinOring on 2016/01/15 03:52
First off you get one scale for free and any others you have to pay for and they don't say how much. You have to go to the App Store to see how much in app purchases are. I'm a beginner and can't figure out what order to play the notes. It just displays all the notes. No instructions. It does me No Good.
Bought it and now it's asking me to pay again for premium.
by 93847; on 2015/12/16 05:38
Stay away. Don't know why but it's trying to make me pay twice for all of the scales. Can't believe this garbage.
Great app for learning scales!
by Bimbo lv on 2015/07/04 17:44
This is a really cool app, and it works very well. I have no complaints because its does exactly what its promises. If they were to update or change anything I would suggest an option to display notes in music theory style.
Scales? More like notes on fretboard
by Rednarsto on 2015/06/09 22:51
Really does not display scales but just notes on fretboard. No scale pattern grouping for reference.
I like it but.....
by Rizzo Rapz on 2015/06/08 08:05
I hate how the fretboard runs straight up next to the chart...I want it flat on the bottom so I don't have to turn my head sideways.

Waste of money
by dMore1 on 2014/07/30 21:04
No tech support, errors and simply a waste of money. Look elsewhere.
no natural minor?
by svBlue on 2014/07/21 04:55
limited choice of scales for a relatively expensive app noted only. no interval display.
New go-to app
by Nejdiehndnd on 2018/07/13 01:44
I hesitated to spend $2 on the premium version but thought to myself, why not, it’s only $2. now that i have it i would easily buy it again for $100. i’m gonna say that one again. i would wholeheartedly be willing to spend $100 on this app if i ever needed to buy it again. this app completely blew my expectations out of the water. everything i need to refer to for notes, scales, modes, and everything in between is found in this app. 15/10 rating. i want to marry the person who made this thing but i am already humbled and intimidated by their intelligence.

Great app!
by Storm&Doom on 2019/07/20 21:40
Versatile, fun, and it grows with you.
Improvising made easy
by gd_law on 2018/05/04 14:49
I really enjoy being able to view the scale patterns while playing to the provided backing tracks. I find I am able to memorize the scale patterns much more quickly using this app over other methods of learning I have tried in the past and it makes learning scales fun!
Abandoned
by Axiomagical on 2019/02/07 17:35
If you want to support this dev, do it in ChordBank.
My new reference app

I have been playing guitar since I was 14 yrs. old. I just turned 69, I use this app with students and fellow musicians. It’s a great tool for when I write and work in the studio with musicians and bands I track, mix and master. Well worth the investment if you’re are serious about your knowing your instrument.
Nice!

Great app for a quick and responsive practice sesh. I wish I had this when I first started out; it takes you right up the neck with scale patterns in every key, the tonic notes are highlighted, and you can explore the circle of fifths, bringing theory and practice together in a simple yet effective way.

by Dr_J_Wasser on 2018/10/14 01:00
Great backing tracks and I find them very useful for practicing. Some suggestions would be adding landscape mode to see the scales as you would on the actual guitar. Also please keep adding backing tracks such as blues shuffle, classic metal such as Black Sabbath, wider array of rock ones. Thanks and please keep adding!

Great, but...
by MasterSlug2112 on 2017/09/13 17:47
This is an easy to use all-in-one app that can really help you practice all sorts of scales along the neck. Without buying the upgrade, however, you are very limited. But in my opinion, the upgrade is very much worth buying.
