Still no fix for dictation
by inthesand on 2018/12/13 19:43
Wow. iOS 12 came out in September and we've had at least THREE excel updates and NONE of them have fixed the issue with iOS dictation. Apparently, the Microsoft fix is to display a banner that say something like "we are aware of the issue with Excel and iOS dictation. Please update the next version when it is released" when Excel is restarted after a crash. Well, I did that with the latest release and it still crashes when I press the microphone button button. And, occasionally, I still see that that banner. I have a bunch apps installed and none of them have a problem with iOS dictation. I don't use Word that much. The problem seems to be intermittent there. And I've never had a problem using dictation with PowerPoint for iOS. But I have the problem *every time* with Excel for iOS. I've tested this on two different types of iPads and iPhones, all running the latest version of iOS 12. They all crash when you press the microphone button. I've uninstalled, reinstalled. Doesn't matter. I have found out that Google's "gboard" offers dictation and works with Excel. You'll have to decide for yourself if the potential trade-offs in privacy are worth it. And every competitor spreadsheet product I have tried also works with iOS dictation. I have some become so familiar with Kingsoft's WPS office product that I am forgetting how to use some of the functions Excel. Maybe that's not such a bad thing after all.
Constantly closes in background
by Hernace on 2018/12/11 16:07
I think this is a Microsoft issue, since it doesn’t appear to happen with other apps. Whatever spreadsheet I have open will almost always be closed if I switch to another app, then switch back to Excel. I assume iOS closes the open spreadsheet in the background. That said, I suspect Microsoft could do something to have that spreadsheet automatically re-opened when I switch back to Excel. It makes Excel almost unusable, though I don’t see many comments to this effect here. Happens on iPhone XS and the newest iPad Pro 11inch.

So disappointing, but I haven’t found a good enough iOS alternative to replace this. Yet.

Dictation Still Not Working!
by Ldyrose on 2018/12/07 17:06
So, I’m guessing that the lack of response means that there is no fix in sight? Dictation cannot be done in Excel or Word as the microphone on the iPad Pro does not work in either application. When attempting to use, it shuts down the app. Needless to say, my production utilizing both apps has decreased significantly. I was hoping to see a fix, or something. Like maybe: We are working on it, we are aware, take a flying leap, leave us alone...... Something?

Perfect for on the Fly
by Hungry for Chicken on 2018/12/05 17:44
Don’t get me wrong there are definitely limitations with it being on mobile, some limitations even that I don’t think would be too hard to implement over time. That said though for what excel on mobile does offer it is very worth it. Whether I’m making moderate changes to an existing workbook or creating a new one before finalizing it on windows 10 (usually because of the limitations on mobile), it is very user friendly and allows everything needed to create a basic workbook. It still has room for improvement which is my reason for only giving 4 stars but in the end it’s a very good mobile adaptation.
Training intensive since tools are not easily found
by Jqsat on 2018/12/05 14:30
I have used Excel for decades. Using on my iPad has taken of lot of googling training and shortcuts to tools. Very time consuming. I usually get frustrated and wait until I can do the work on my computer.
NOT the desktop version
by Unkown0908 on 2018/12/04 17:42
I purchased the new iPad Pro to replace my 2011 MacBook Pro. I love it for most things, but the Excel app has been my biggest disappointment. I am in the nonprofit world and creating the spreadsheets I need for reporting has proven to be extremely frustrating and full of glitches, especially when it comes to creating tables. Also, there are many features that the desktop version offers that the app does not. PLEASE make the app more like the desktop version.
Missing to many functions
by Corrieash on 2018/12/03 22:39
I use Excel everyday for my job, just not the iPad version. One thing that is very annoying, is the size of the drop down menu box. I can only see about a 3rd of what is in the box!

Good but annoying
by Kamarhi on 2018/11/27 23:47
So this is a very good version of excel. It is obviously missing some of the things needed to be a full version, such as hyperlinks within a workbook. Now the scary part. I bought this about 5 years ago. Every so often something pops up asking me to log back in. Today for the first time it is now asking me for a monthly subscription fee. Oh you better believe I am getting my money back if I have to subscribe to use this. Looks like Microsoft is struggling if they have to ask people for money like this.

Huge Bug
by ctthorne on 2018/11/25 20:47
Don’t move off the app without save your work first. Microsoft cares more about checking to see if you have an Office365 license than saving/preserving your work! When trying to create a simple worksheet that I was cutting and pasting to from a web page, when I got back less than a minute later, excel reset itself and then opened up the last thing I had open that had been saved! I lost everything I had done! Why would this happen? The only reason why it would not remain open is the same reason it takes so long to open a Word document in Windows... because it has to check to make sure you have a valid license... even if you had opened up Word not just 30 seconds ago!

Not good customer service
by Ariq Skoug on 2018/11/21 12:18
I have been trying to contact them FOR MONTHS about a bug. (If you use microphone on the iPhone to dictate, app immediately crashes) I catalog book ISBNs- sometimes 50-or-so At a time- and the 13 digit number is so easy to dictate instead of typing. Now, I have to dictate in Messages, then copy/paste everything over. I get canned responses from Excel referring me to tutorials on their website like it is something I can fix. I have tried six friend’s phones, they all crash, too. They obviously aren’t listening, bug still hasn’t been patched. There was an “update” today with “bug fixes.” I was excited! But it wasn’t fixed. I feel defeated, I haven’t found a way to actually tell someone at Microsoft- poor customer service. But otherwise, the Office Suite is powerful, an amazing tool. I just wish someone there would listen, or was even accessible. *Update* 11-21-18 still not fixed (I’ve sent them more messages, they just don’t listen.)

Limited Features
by LoganL2 on 2018/11/20 19:23
The greedy people at Microsoft require you to get a 360 subscription to do basic features such as explode a pie chart or add percentage. I have a school assignment I need to do that requires those features. I've been forced to convert it to the Numbers app to do those things. I'm not forgiving Microsoft for this. People shouldn't have to put up with this.
Excel Driving me Nuts!
by DeanGregg on 2018/11/20 03:18
Excel, a great program on a pc, is not so great on an iPad Pro. Every time I toggle apps and come back to Excel, it has to reload the sheet. It might reload the same sheet on which you were working...or pick a recent one you were using.

by CanNerd on 2018/11/19 07:34
(First, It’s never stated up front that you need a paid 365 subscription to do basically anything). I sprung for the subscription. I’m on the go a lot and it would be nice to have the fundamental tools to generate plots right in my hand. Lo and behold once activating the mobile app I find I can’t do anything close to what I’d hoped with plot manipulation. No axis scale customization? No secondary axis? No Data source editing-can only drag highlighted cells? Why can’t I create a decent looking chart. Am I asking too much? This app is called Excel. It is not; it’s a hollowed out shell of Excel. A more fitting name would be “Excel for iOS™” And again, if I sound unreasonable, consider that I would pay $99 a year for a 365 account solely for the ability to have a solid Excel iOS app.

Missing Features
by Comment est-ce que on dit non. on 2018/11/14 02:05
I continue being disappointed in how Excel works in iOS. I can only continuously display a fixed header row, or a fixed left column, but not both simultaneously. In scrolling through a very large spreadsheet I require both top row and left side column be simultaneously displayed to act as coordinates. Also, it isn't clear when a 'save' has occurred so that I can safely quite the app by the same process that I would use to close other apps. Nooooooo, instead I have to first use the 'back' soft button in the app's top left corner to ensure latest version is pushed back to the file location, and only then can I safely close the app with aforementioned process if I want the latest changes to be saved. And further I have an older iPad that stores files using an app called File Manager, where File Manager is a location that Excel apparently cannot access in its menu of available locations from which I can open saved files. I have tried adding this location but it isn't available as a location option through Excel. I can open an Excel file in File Manager indirectly by first opening the file through File Manager's native reader, then pushing that reader's spreadsheet into the Excel app the same way I would push something to a printer. In this case* however my Excel credentials are not being recognized and I can only open a read-only copy that cannot be changed or saved. I am consequently allowed to only work in Excel while online after I have first downloaded a spreadsheet, a problematic situation when I would need to open and close a 50MB file more often then once a day and am using a limited data allowance of my cellular plan for internet access. I am very surprised at the ineffectiveness of the Microsoft subscription service in not provisioning to meet these obvious needs. It's been years guys/gals. What's up? You folks should be paying me to keep beta testing your so-called released products. Pretty shoddy you guys. *Update (the day after): as if by magic I can suddenly now push that spreadsheet from File Manager into Excel and then save it directly to my iPad. Attempting this takes a leap of faith, that unlike yesterday's attempt today's did work: press 'save' on Excel despite the message that the current Excel version can not save, and voila it does save and the fake warning message then goes bye bye (for ever more?).

Freeze panes and the Apple Pencil
by jamie5221 on 2018/11/12 19:01
We work off of lists all the time for work. The pencil is really great with that! I love being able to check things off and make quick notes without having to pull up the keyboard. However, the pencil does not work if you have the freeze panes on. I love to freeze the top row so my title of the columns scroll down with me. But if I do that then the pencil will not work. That is the only downside I have found so far.

Excel 365 on iPad
by EngineeringType on 2018/11/12 14:10
This version of Excel is reasonably workable on an iPad, but: 1) I really feel hampered not being able to use a mouse. 2) The more advanced tools missing (from the laptop version) are an issue for some users. 3) The on-screen iPad keyboard severely limits the viewable area of the spreadsheet itself. Rather than use a separate keyboard with the iPad to address that, seems more logical to use Excel on a small laptop to address all 3 of my issues.

Epic fail after last update
by GLR482 on 2018/11/07 01:07
I’ve been using Excel on PC for the past 20+ years and on iPad and iPhone for 5 or 6 years. After the last update, now when I move between apps, Excel acts like it closes the spreadsheet and then reopens it when I navigate back to it. I have one password protected spreadsheet I have to refer to frequently, and now it requires me to re-enter the password every time Excel receives the focus! And Word on iPad is exhibiting the same close/reopen behavior. What is going on?

by smkwlsplws on 2018/11/02 12:39
Why do I need to use cell data to edit paperwork on here? Shouldn’t this document simply be saved to my phone? No? Is it in the cloud? How does that make sense? Every time I open this app, I have to wait for it to retrieve MY documents from the cloud? Trash

Dictation Still Not Working!
by Ldyrose on 2018/12/07 17:06
So, I’m guessing that the lack of response means that there is no fix in sight? Dictation cannot be done in Excel or Word as the microphone on the iPad Pro does not work in either application.

Also, there are many features that the desktop version offers that the app does not. PLEASE make the app more like the desktop version.

Причем вводя ту же самую функцию на планшете - всё работает отлично. Хочется задать вопрос, а на ко хрен тогда выпускать приложение на телефон, если через него нельзя нормально работать?! Huge Bug
by ctthorne on 2018/11/25 20:47
Don’t move off the app without save your work first.

It still has room for improvement which is my reason for only giving 4 stars but in the end it’s a very good mobile adaptation.

by Unkown0908 on 2018/12/04 17:42
I purchased the new iPad Pro to replace my 2011 MacBook Pro.

Oh you better believe I am getting my money back if I have to subscribe to use this. Looks like Microsoft is struggling if they have to ask people for money like this.
Contractor uses in field

I like and use this program in the field. Would be better if the sum calculations were not erased when importing files in.

Easy for people that r not spread sheet savvy.
Бесполезное приложение
by RudeJohnny1991 on 2018/11/27 01:27
Just so so

Does not have, or Help does not clarify, ability to set titles, so secondary sorting, many other functions. Opens a spreadsheet created on Microsoft Office, just very limited functionality on the iPad.
Huge Bug

Don’t move off the app without save your work first. Microsoft cares more about checking to see if you have an Office365 license than saving/preserving your work! When trying to create a simple worksheet that I was cutting and pasting to from a web page, when I got back less than a minute later, excel reset itself and then opened up the last thing I had open that had been saved! I lost everything I had done! Why would this happen? The only reason why it would not remain open is the same reason it takes so long to open a Word document in Windows... because it has to check to make sure you have a valid license... even if you had opened up Word not just 30 seconds ago!

Downloaded this to keep track of my Christmas shopping spending and list. Its easy to use and works pretty much like the pc version. Great job Microsoft!
