A little "laggy"

Got completely lost in San Francisco, could not update fast enough
Gets me from A to B
by jgmjgm14 on 2017/01/17 02:33
It's a good app. I like that you can add stops along the way for things like coffee and gas. I do not like that there is a "1" bubble on the app signaling that I have a notification, but I can't find that notification in the app.

Iphone7 running great
by Mule419 on 2017/01/16 02:05
I use it all the time. Even works when signal is very low in rural areas as long as you plot route before you start. All my info kept in cloud so even if I lose a phone I can get to it.
HMI Variations Change, But Data Is Improving
by Wyoming Man on 2017/01/16 01:51
Google Map is now quite reliable, with fewer gotchas. Markers referring to scenery, public lands, and other places not associated with for profit business are available. My recent experience towing a trailer that limited top speed, which presented a challenge Google needs to address. Navigation choices currently assume posted speeds, however when speeds must be decreased, there is not a way to reflect that limitation in the navigation function. Valley roads with high mask angles, or other GPS challenges remain, but the data & interface are pretty solid. Buffers help maintain tracking when communications are intermittently disrupted.

Be careful
by vinhle on 2017/01/16 00:51

Great BUT...
by RamonaSkhrj on 2017/01/16 00:51
Really enjoying the newest features including spoken ETA, rerouting for the fastest route and notifications of construction etc integrated from ways BUT we need route options back! We should be able to see the suggested routes and pick the one we want like we could in the past!
Awesome
by Bigfatpaulie24 on 2017/01/16 00:47
Way better than apple maps wish Siri could use this instead
WHAT¿?¿?¿?
by Fourupnorth on 2017/01/15 22:23

Recent update ruined it for me...am I doing something wrong?
by P1ounoonehasthisname on 2017/01/15 20:34
I've used this app as my primary navigation tool for years. One time I turned off the voice with the navigation, and try as I might, I can't turn it back on. Moreover, the only option I am given is to PREVIEW the route. The option to start navigation is gone. I'm sure it's just a set of glitches, but it makes the app unusable for me. Switching to Waze.
Great app. One request
by kodiakak on 2017/01/15 20:22
I love The Google Maps app and use it anytime we need directions. The voice is clear. The directions are accurate. The interface is intuitive. I have one request. Sometimes the street names are too small on my phone for me to read, especially if they are printed on top of a highway. When I zoom, the picture zooms, but the roads and names stay the same size. Would you please consider making the street and highway names easier to read, somehow? Thanks again for a superb app!
Great app!
by Z-Dwag on 2017/01/15 19:36

Use it too much
by I Am Duug on 2017/01/15 18:09
As with anything involving goo-ghoul I wish I can just avoid it due to privacy & ethics issues. But Apple Map is still lacking in completeness. Virtually useless outside the USA...annoying! Google I hate you ; why do you have to be such assholes!!
Excellent directions but announcements poor
by BobT1962 on 2017/01/15 18:07
The last change seems to lower the announcement voice when reading out directions consistently the announcement is missed because the voice is too low. I would suggest maybe a tone before the announcement. Thanks
Good
by Idontwantanickname01 on 2017/01/15 17:38
Doesn't have all the things desktop does and not super intuitive, but still google maps.

by FukkOff818 on 2017/01/15 17:18

by Anonnn:) on 2017/01/15 02:38
It fascinates me that Google never changes- there is always a bend toward extorting your personal information. I turned off "Location Data Collection", and notice that if I fully close the app and then reopen it, presto! it is reset to be turned on. Every. time. I do it. A-holes!!!
PLEASE change this!
by Cheycapri on 2017/01/15 01:43
Please make it possible to preview different times. It allows us to plan for traffic.
Hahahahahaha - now THIS is what an app should be!
by iPapa uPapa on 2017/01/15 00:04
Ok, I've loved maps all my life, and Google's aren't much if you're into maps the old fashioned way. But if you want to find things in the (commercial) world, this is your tool. By adding all those zillions of advertisers, suddenly those old yellow pages are a thing of the past, too. Whatever you're seeking is just a quick search, wowzers - campgrounds, plumbers, anybody your browser can find will pop onto your map. Zoom to your region, and voilla - you don't get duplicates, you don't find things no longer around, and the job of sifting and choosing is visually right there. How lovely. Best app ever - I'm really cutting back on Chrome and using Maps more and more for shopping and adventure sorts of searches. Now, if I can just get one of those new autodriving cars, I'll be set!
Improvement suggestion
by Aatif_2017 on 2017/01/15 00:04
This is one of the best apps, hands down. Improvement suggestion: I wish there would be a choice I could select which gives me "easy" driving directions. The kind where I won't have to make too many street turns, or be too vigilant for next turn direction (only to save 2 min on an hour long ride)... as long as it does not increase the travel time by... say 5%.
Zoom wigs out and search
by 736352425373838 on 2017/01/15 00:00
The zoom wigs out sometimes when zooming in. Also the search function seems to fixate on certain locations sometimes.

Seriously look no where else for your maps app. This is by far the most accurate and up to date option! I use it every day to check traffic on 4 various routes I can take to downtown and it is a lifesaver! Also- my home is a new constuction and this is the only app that recognizes our house! Best ever!

Decent, Needs More Customization
by Taddyter on 2017/01/14 20:28
It's on overall good navigator. I had trouble changing the voice to something that didn't sound like an insipid teenager from SoCal, and every time I need to take an action the voice reads what feels like a novella - "In 900 feet, use the left two lanes to turn right onto interstate 95 toward interstate 295 and such and such and such...". Ugh. A simple "In 900 feet turn right" would be plenty. You're interrupting my imaginary argument with my boss.
Driving distractions
by Mjke29 on 2017/01/14 19:39
When I choose the preferred route and the app found a faster route It's when I found the biggest distraction. I don't mind that it gives me the option of a faster route, but when I have click no every time this happens it gets distracting. Don't make a default answer. Or add a voice recognition that you don't have to touch the phone for this.

Still the best map app
by Charsmegafauna on 2017/01/14 17:07
I use this for work and it never lets me down. Tried Apple maps again recently and it still was not as good, taking me to gas station that was out of business. So google maps is still the best. Not sure I agree with the bad reviews here. Sure it's not perfect, but what works better? If someone builds a better maps app let me know.
The app I NEED!
by Lady Games on 2017/01/14 16:26

It's great, but...
by jballam on 2017/01/14 16:15
One small suggestion is to find a way to correct the pronunciation for street and place names. When I use the voice function for directions, I often resort to reading the text version to see the correct street name. Is there a way for me to correct them?

by Feteera on 2017/01/14 11:23
Google Maps has always saved me, whether on my leisure trips or even in the busy crazy streets of Cairo. The only thing is that it sometimes goes crazy on the map and takes all routes on the map at the same time. Not sure if this is an app issue or connectivity issue.

THE BEST! Bravo!❤
by smart chic on 2017/01/14 06:20
I've used the other maps, but I got all mixed up and frustrated especially on freeways. THIS MAP is the BEST!! What I like is it shows you the next turn/freeway under the one your already on, no matter how far away you are. It counts down the miles as you continue the one your on currently.
Metro Rail / Bus Route Change is Awful
by RogueBathory on 2017/01/14 04:30
I take the Los Angeles Metro trains on a daily basis. Google maps used to be great with showing me the quickest route, including the train. Now it's showing me nothing but multiple bus transfers and the route is so much longer than it should be.
Good, not great
by sbr2929 on 2017/01/14 03:18
The app works fine. The shorter route detection is great, and the map is very user friendly. However. I would like more detail in the map itself. Also, the app sometimes bugs out for no reason at all, even while cell coverage is strong. My verdict is a four out of five, a definite upgrade over apple maps, must download!

Cost more to fix my old heap than to put a down payment on something 'new to me'. So I called Gary Arrigoni and he got me into a great car, with a great deal in about a day. He stuck to all my requirements except one, but to write about it would be like listening to 'white noise'. It was a wonderful and easy experience working with Gary. My 2011 Malibu and I are very happy together!

Privacy Violations
by Grateful in Cali on 2017/01/13 08:17
The latest version doesn't allow location data collection to be permanently turned off. Once the app is restarted, data collection is enabled again without the user's consent. Violation of user privacy - when a user opts out, it shouldn't be reenabled when the app restarts - very shady Google...

Best app for Navigation, PERIOD
by EDM4LIFE92 on 2017/01/04 21:15
I absolutely love Google maps, way more than the joke of a maps app apple tried cramming down our throats back with the release of iOS 6. Don't get me wrong, the 3D flyover feature on Apple maps is nice to just browse around and kill some time, but if you want a proper navigation app with accurate and up to date business listings being the maps are constantly updated by users, this is hands down my all time favorite navigation app. Sure, Waze may have some useful features, but isn't always accurate with traffic conditions being those are updated by users, while googles traffic service uses your GPS data and uses your speed and the speed from other users around you to give you a pretty accurate speed and traffic function on Google Maps. Sure some may think that google using your GPS data is like spying on you, but they only use that bit of GPS data is to give up to date traffic conditions. It's not tracking where you walk or shop or get directions too, it just uses GPS data coming from your phone when moving at more than a brisk walking pace, so above 10+ MPH it's using your GPS Data for traffic. I love Google Maps, just wish they had a 3D setting like Apple maps does and like how Google earth has it, but they should incorporate that 3D city/building modeling abilities into standard Google Maps.
Very good, but missing a few important features.
by ggarness on 2012/12/26 17:45
Google maps is by far the most robust free mapping app for the iPhone. Google obviously has the best search algorithms. But they also seem to have the most complete POI database, the best traffic information, built in public transit and directions for cities, and of course street view to help you see what your destination looks like. The turn by turn instructions work very well and are about on par with Apple's. About the only thing that Apple Maps does better is hook into Siri for voice control, give you direct access to contacts, and give you a nice 3d mode for major metro areas. And that's what keeps Google Maps from five stars. Google obviously has no access to Siri unless Apple grants it to them but Google has had voice recognition in their search app for over two years so its absence here is very noticable here. And the lack of access to the phone contacts seems petty and manipulative on Google's part (they of course want you to upload that contact info to their servers so you can have access to it). Which is a demand that not only makes things more difficult than it has to be but it crosses a line in my opinion. Still, Google Maps is probably the mapping app you will find yourself using the most. And Google is usually pretty good about listening to customers so I hve no doubt voive control and contact access will be added at some point.
good with 3 exceptions
by Ken NYC on 2012/12/13 08:31
It's good. In most ways, it's better than Apple's Maps app, at least as of Dec 2012. It has public transit, and appears to be linked to google's full search results, which means it has a full database of businesses including office-type businesses, not just the retail stuff that Apple has borrowed from Yelp's datasets. For example, google's Maps can instantly find the Clinton Global Initiative in midtown Manhattan, and will provide extra info about it, but Apple's Maps cannot find it at all. And it's really nice that in NYC, you can overlay the subway system onto the map. The 3 negatives I've found so far: (1) The type and symbols are really tiny, and there's no preference for changing the size. So if you are even a little bit farsighted like I am or need glasses for reading, it's very hard to use the app -- even harder than iOS 5's Maps app. (Apple's new Maps app is much, much better in this regard, with preferences you can change.) (2) Google works REALLY hard to convince you to "sign in" so that they can link every move you make, and every directions search you ever type, to everything else in their databases about you. That's just creepy and gross. (3) A style note: the app doesn't present animated red push pins dropping down from the sky! You just get a bunch of static red dots. Bummer! (Note: you don't have to "sign in," not ever. You can hit the "X" or "Skip." But they try to make it look like you do.)
Just okay.
by Sandy Amandie on 2014/07/03 23:07
Even though it's better than apple maps, since the update the app is significantly less functional. I use the navigation to go to well over 20 locations a day, and about 50% of the time at some point the app loses my location completely, jumping the locator arrow all over the place, even placing me in the middle of rivers and the ocean, unable to relocate for several minutes, often causing me to miss turns and become disoriented. Restarting the navigation does not refresh this problem, and closing out the app entirely and retyping my destination address isn't something I have the time or the attention to constantly do while driving on the road. I assume this is because the app now displays satellite images in real time while on the road, I realize you can switch this feature off, but when the navigation auto ends when I come within even a quarter mile of a house, the satellite imagery makes it possible just to see the actual location. Another significant problem with this app is that when I search for a location, even with a perfectly typed street address google automatically prefers to choose locations of the same address thousands of miles away. For example I am in florida, but often times results are displayed in Ohio and New York before anything in my area. After re-searching several times it gets the hint and pulls results from my area, but this is extremely nonsensical and inefficient. Still dissatisfied with this below potential app
Works Well
by MF AZ on 2012/12/18 22:01
Google Maps works well and does everything you need it to do. I didn't find apple maps to be bat at all, though. Goolge Maps has many more businesses in its database so thats an advantage but every tome I added a business to my contacts and clicked to map it with Apple maps it seemed to add it to the Apple maps database and i know this because my friends could then find the business on their iPhones using Apple maps. Google maps doesn't seem to have 3D cities but thats really only a fun feature of Apple Maps anyway and not necessary to get from point A to point B. The one thing that is important for me is that Google maps talks through my car's bluetooth so the radio pauses and I hear directions over the stereo speakers. With Apple maps the voice directions are from the iPhone speaker which makes it hard to hear while driving, especially with the radio on. One disappointing thing with Google maps is that it doesn't work with Siri or contacts addresses since it doesn't have native integration. But that's not Google maps fault, it is more Apple's fault for not allowing Siri to integrate with non-native apps. If Apple maps worked over my bluetooth i would primarily use Apple Maps. But for now i will use Google Maps and hope for Siri and contact integration in the future.
Went Back To "WAZE"
by DocWithers on 2013/03/05 18:07
I'd been using "WAZE" for quite some time before Google maps came back out for the iPhone. Of course, when Google maps came out with the app I said "great! been waiting for this". However after using it for several days I quickly discovered that it didn't have the flexibility and features that WAZE has. For instance… While driving, WAZE will tell you that there are road hazards such as "ladder in the Far left lane in 1/4 mile" "car on the shoulder up ahead", "accident ahead", or even police presence ahead. There's no way Google maps does anything close to that. Additionally, I noticed that when Google maps tells you to take an exit, and you hear the last warning to take the exit, if it's a particularly long exit, say longer than usual then you won't hear the last take the exit warning until after you missed it!! WAZE on the other hand, has somehow compensated for this and it knows it and particular exit is longer than usual, and gives you the appropriate verbal cues before you miss it. Being a user driven program, WAZE also gives you current up-to-date information regarding road hazards through social aspect, In addition to a few fun features that help to reflect the users personality if here she wishes to use them. All in all, I'm 85% satisfied with Google maps, and 100% satisfied with WAZE.
Great map and directions plus business directory
by dfabs on 2014/11/06 20:40
It's good to have options, and Google maps is a strong map offering for iOS. There are lots of nice features, like transit directions, traffic view, street view, and "explore" to see nearby businesses. There is also some nice integration for Gmail users, for example if you have an upcoming event with an address included, Google maps will have the directions waiting for you via the blue directions button in the lower right hand side, also where bookmarks and history reside. The app gives lane guidance, a handy list view for directions (tap at the bottom during navigation), and an overview of the current route. Google maps doesn't have Apple Maps nice "live" lock-screen wallpaper of the map while navigating. Google maps is also optimized for one-handed use: double tap and hold, then slide your thumb up or down to zoom in and out. The New Google Maps is a sold map and navigation app for iPhone, with many strengths and pluses overall. For iOS there is not one king map app: users are best off trying out a few, and for each case different apps will do the job better or worse. Google is solid, though Apple Maps may work for some in other situations. The actual routing will vary depending on area.
Used to be much better
by ElizLeg on 2013/07/10 02:29
I drive for a living and often must depend on GPS to get me where I need to go. Lately, when I begin directions the voice doesn't speak at all, forcing me to constantly hold my phone in front of my face while I am driving. I drive a stick shift and this is not always possible for me; my car does not offer a convenient place for my phone to rest where I can also see the screen. When the voice does decide to speak, it often tells me to turn after I have already done so or tells me to exit after I have already done so. Many times, the map will continue on the route as I drive but the written instructions on the top (which are supposed to give you clues as to the next step to take) do not update. I have driven a complete trip with the top directions stuck on the first step, and no voice command to tell me where I am supposed to go. In the city in which I live, it is often difficult to discern on a tiny screen map which of the tiny back roads I am supposed to take to reach my destination. I have also found that these directions will reset if I shake my phone and send feedback, all of which I would have to do while also attempting to drive, as I am in the middle of my trip every time. I will have to use a different app until these problems are fixed. I have always been a die-hard Google Maps fan but it is beginning to put my safety in danger and I have seen no improvements despite my constant feedback.
Glad to see this out for iOS again!
by Allen Oh on 2012/12/19 09:53
While I don't think the native iOS mapping app is as bad as people make it out to be, it has gotten me lost a couple of times (but just a couple, and to be fair, so has Google Maps). So I was glad to see Google Maps available again. I would still use Waze and even the native iOS app as my go to apps for a couple of reasons. Both allow me to search my contacts, which I do pretty often. Unless I've missed something, with Google Maps, I would have to get the address from my contacts list first, then put it into the search bar. This is a bit too complicated, especially if I'm driving. Which brings me to my next point. I use Siri A LOT when I'm driving, and Siri defaults (understandably) to the native iOS mapping app. I'd love to be able to tell Siri to "navigate me to my brother's house" (for example) and have her use Waze or Google Maps to do that, but as it is, iOS maps will remain my most commonly used navigation app. UPDATE: I have discovered that, while Google Maps does not integrate with Contacts, it does have integration, of sorts, with Cobook (another free app). You can click on your contact's address in Cobook, click on "Open in Google Maps," and then when the browser opens up, click on "Open in the Google Maps app." It's not an elegant solution, but it works.
Tired of being ____ed over by Google
by CaitxD on 2016/05/28 03:06
I used to use google maps all the time, since it used to be great, but it's been nothing but frustrating lately. Today, for example, I put together an itinerary for a trip from Huntsville, AL, to Savannah, GA, WITHOUT going through Atlanta. I went through painstaking detail to ensure I would go down through Newnan and miss Atlanta all together. Sent it to my phone using googles nifty little feature and hit "go" on my phone. The SECOND I left the parking garage, it rerouted me through Atlanta, so I pulled over and tried getting my old route back but since I wasn't in the garage I could only "look" at it, couldn't use it for GPS. Okay... I try my best to get it to do my route but to no avail. All daylong I fought with it to take me on the route I selected but it absolutely INSISTED on taking me to Atlanta. I gave up once I hit the GA border on US 20 and switched to apple maps, it offered a non Atlanta route (which google STILL WASN'T DOING) and never once tried to reroute me, even when I stopped multiple times. If I ****ing sent a route to my phone, Google, don't you think I want to use that route even if it's 20 minutes longer? (Oh the horror, 7:10 instead of 6:50) This isn't waze you shouldn't be rerouting me every seven seconds to the "fastest" route when I deliberately picked a specific route. I'm uninstalling Google maps, I'm tired of feeling abandoned by my GPS. I'd just buy a freaking paper map if they still made good ones.
Practical, Accurate, Perfect!
by Brittany Vigil on 2016/11/23 06:01
First off I live in Phoenix so my review is based mostly off of my usage there. However I was a flight attendant for some time and used maps in just about every US State, Canada, Mexico, Italy, and England, and Scotland and it will remain my #1 choice for navigation software. I've been using Google Maps since Google decided to start mapping! It was a godsend when things like MapQuest were the only services available and has only gotten better over time. I love how seamlessly it integrates with websites, apps, programs, and software across a number of different industries. It is available on every platform which I know to be in existence and is useful for just about any purpose, whether it's looking up an address, locating a business, acquiring directions, determining route times by method of transportation (in my city it even offers Uber or Lyft rates), sharing information, researching the surrounding area of a location using street view, or simply checking out the terrain for a hike or a bike ride. They do it all, they do it accurately and effectively. But most importantly they do it safely (i.e. there is no option to take your eyes off the road to let fellow drivers know there is a cop monitoring your speed).
Serious bugs that could cause accidents while driving
by Why am I being forced to use a nickname? on 2013/11/23 23:15
I first tested this out around my neighborhood and it seemed to work fine, so I decided to use it on my trip from NYC to Philly. BIG MISTAKE. About halfway into the drive, it suddenly directed me to get off at the next exit making me do quick merges from the middle lane to the right lane and the off ramp. Then it took me onto another highway and directed me back onto the first highway. At that point, it repeated itself. If I kept following, I would have just been going in circles. I had to pull off onto the local roads and I just used Apple Maps on my iPhone. Coming back home, I wanted to stop by a shopping center. I tried using Google Maps again and directed me to the wrong location about twenty minutes out of my way. Also, directions would change or suddenly disappear from the list view. Example: Going back home, I knew the general direction so I didn't bother using the app but I did use it to search for directions just to see what it would say. It showed the Belt Parkway, which is the route I wanted, but once I drove to that point, the directions changed and said to take the BQ Expressway, which is completely different. So this app is only useful if you're already familiar with the area, which defeats its purpose.
"Check your network connection and try again."
by mechanesthesia on 2016/08/13 00:00
I have reported this error more times that I can count, but it seems like they are falling on deaf ears since I've had this issue since April. I’ve also attempted reaching out to the “Google Maps Help Forum.” It was working just fine with the update on July 25th. But with the last update from August 8th, it went back to the same problem. It seems whatever was fixed got unfixed with the last update. When I tap on one of my placemarker icons from my "My Maps" layers, I keep getting this error: "Check your network connection and try again." This error message is misleading because my network connection has never been an issue and I can use the rest of the Maps app and other apps just fine. Closing and re-opening the place layer doesn't work. Closing and re-opening the app doesn't work. The only thing that works is to delete the app and download it again or to clear application data. The problem is that this is a very persistent bug, so it only will only work fine temporarily until I get the same error messages again, and have to clear my cache again. Typically it will work okay for a few properties... by the time I got to a third or fourth property, it will happen again. This is very frustrating and makes the feature of the app practically unusable. I use Google MyMaps daily for my job since I’m out on the road and it’s critical for me to have this working.
Unexplained grey screen cover
by Puggirl415 on 2014/01/30 17:07
I've been using google maps for my job which requires precise directions to many addresses throughout the work day. In the past I felt the app worked adequately on my phone and I never thought about looking for something better. Recently, in the past week this app has been acting up in ways I can't handle. First, despite living in a city with pretty good coverage the app is slow to load and slow to give route options. Then I noticed recently that it was not giving directions as I was driving and got stuck on directions for streets and turns I'd already passed. I deleted the app and reloaded it. I also turned my phone off and on to reset everything. Now today I searched for an address and a grey semi translucent screen covered my results. It indicated that I could swipe up to remove it or tap it to do so. Neither action worked and I could not see the map for quick glances as I listen to turn by turn voice directions. It is very helpful to be able to see that your upcoming turn is to the right b4 the voice tells you so you can get across several lanes of traffic if you need to. I dread using this app now in case I get this screen and can't get rid of it. Please fix this and I can fix this review. Google don't stress me out while driving and don't make me distracted while driving as I try to fix this stupid unexplained screen.
A great GPS for the walking tourist
by DallasClubGuy on 2013/09/14 17:25
I recently paid Florence Italy a visit. This was my third visit over a period of 50 years. My first visit as a student, I was completely lost. My safety net was taxi cabs. Just give them an address and presto, you get to your desired destination. To keep the fare high, often I was taken for an extended ride prior to being delivered to my desired address. Nine years ago, a map did the trick. Of course I failed to bring a compass, so getting turned around was pretty easy. Over the days of my visit, I figure I walked about 40 miles. That was 30 that were necessary to get where I was going and the additional 10 miles of wasted walking in the wrong direction. I'm proud to say I never needed a taxi to put me back on tract. Today with my iPhone and iPad with Google Maps, I know where I am at all times and have no problem getting to where I want to go. Me, I'm the big blue dot. My walking directions are the string of little blue dots. As I walk, I eat the the little dots and never waste a step. From where I am to where I want to go with no stress. I was able to see more and enjoy it all the way without the worry of feeling lost. I will never travel again without Google maps.
Street view/photo sphere integration
by RussellC. on 2016/05/11 07:07
Would be nice to be able to see photo spheres that people have uploaded when you search for a place. Sure you could just go over to the Street View app and see them, but the search in Street View just isn't like Google Maps search. Google Maps will present a bar with street view when you search for a place, but as far as I can tell, there's no ability to see any of the individually uploaded photo spheres. Even if you search for a restaurant or some store and it has pictures, no photo spheres are included even if there is actually a photo sphere associated with that location. There's plenty of photo spheres that are up close and personal with locations that aren't even available to be seen when you search for the location. And it's simply because photo spheres aren't included into any part of Google Maps. I don't understand why street view can cross over into google maps but photo spheres can't. Also, Street View needs a search that's more like Google Maps. Really though, both apps need to be more like each other, which is kind of why I don't understand why they don't just merge. Photo spheres should have been left as its own app to focus on photo spheres without the clutter of street view. And Google Maps should be all encompassing.
Google Deserves More Credit
by Kaine Lawson on 2015/06/16 06:07
I have always used Google Maps for as long as I can remember. Millions of people use it every second on a daily basis. The education system uses it for geographical leaning purposes and companies use it to route logistics. I have watched Google flourish over the past decade. I am a Software Engineer and I truly adorn Google. They have the brightest minds (excluding myself 😊) working on the latest innovations. Their programming, design, functionality, fluid, and all of the above is to adorn. People take Google, Inc. for granted. The company has been a Huge influence in the whole technology industry, in innovation and especially security. When I read about a security flaw in TLS once again, Google is the first to find a solution and fix it while other companies lag for weeks. It amazes me, all of their services and how they interact so flawlessly. People complain about how they collect data, but if you live anywhere in the world that has an Internet connection, you are being tracked in everything you do through that Internet connection wether you use Google or not. Everyone, I hope you enjoy your Google Services as much as I do. Thanks Google, Inc. , - Clinton Lawson.
Generally reliable, with two caveats
by cocamojoe82 on 2016/08/27 07:44
Yes, this app generally gives accurate directions. However, what is with this godawfully obnoxious tendency to route to the rear of virtually any given address that I type in? Also, in my city, the elevations range from about 600' to a little bit over 1,300'. As if the windy and steep roadways weren't crazy enough, throw in several tunnels for good measure, and just to round out the equation. For some reason, Google Maps gets stupidly confused if an address is for a street that is on the mountaintop, direct above the tunnel. Routinely, rather than navigate me to summit where the actual address is located, it instead directs me to enter the tunnel, telling me that the destination is in the middle of the tunnel. The tunnel problem is unique to my city, but is clearly fixable, as Apple Maps doesn't have the same problem. Also, the problem with directing to the rear of any given address is not unique to my city or even my country. While in Prague last Fall, my walking routes, navigated via Google Maps here, were routinely directed to the rear of the address. Seriously, what gives? I'm clearly not the only person who's complained about some of these issues; and, you clearly have some of the smartest computer programmers in the world working for you. Why are these still an issue?
Wow Great Maps app
by Pnmerk on 2012/12/13 18:21
so I downloaded this app for my iPhone 3GS and wow it works great the app is clean and simple and well made. there is no voice search or dictation yet that I could find and I dont know how to get in street view yet. I took it for a spin and it was acurate and well its the best GPS app from the ones I have tested like Navigon,Tomtom, apples own maps and waze if this is version 1 i cant wait to see the improvements I havent tested with other apps running in the background like pandora or the podcast app so that will be next on my list but first looks this app is a must have winner now watch it get to the top 25 list in no time 2nd look I lowered from 5 stars to 4 stars when I did a side by side comparison with apple maps using my wifes iPhone 5 and my 3 GS apple maps was more elegant and acurate for some reason the google maps app was not as acurate as the apple maps and the voice cues stoped after the first one so I did not get voiced instrucctions for the rest of my trip they bouth provided the same rout and they bouth knew that i live in a one way street something my magellan GPS still cant figure out I still intend to test it in the iphone 5 just that the apple maps seemd better looking and more streamlined so more to come I guess
Excellent Service
by Blazmfwd on 2014/09/15 18:34
I have to say this doesn't happen too often. When someone goes beyond the call of duty to service a customer. Scott, the manager at the Ware, MA Advanced Auto did just that today. I went there because I was having problems with my battery and my car starting. There is no feeling worse in the world when your car does not start and it becomes undependable. They diagnosed my battery and I needed a new battery. When you purchase a battery from the store they will put it in free of charge. Well my battery was not so easy to remove, the terminal was stripped and Scott spent two hours trying to get the battery out to put the new one in. He never complained, apologized it was taking so long, and got the new battery in. He could have gave up after a few minutes and said "listen I can't help you, you need a mechanic" but he didn't, he hung in there and tried every tool possible to get off the stripped terminal and get off my battery. People like Scott understand great service. Advanced auto should be very grateful they have him as an employee. Thank you Scott ! thank you for your dedication to the customer and helping me in my time if need.

No more paper maps that you can't easily read! Best navigation tool. Directs you the best and quickest way to your destination. Includes options to locate hotels, restaurants, and points of interest. Perfect for the lone driver. I used it for the time on a cross country trip. The audio commands were amazing, allowing plenty of time to maneuver through traffic. It even announced estimated time of arrival, how many miles you will travel on a particular highway, and tragic delays, including accidents. Once I arrived at my destination, I used it every time when driving locally. I cannot say enough about this app. It makes your driving experience easier and enjoyable. I suggest using the Google app as well. Your voice commands makes it convenient for hands free driving. For the backseat driver, relax, be confident with this app that your driver will get you to your destination. I missed my exit one time and ended up in a downtown college area that was under construction. No problem. Google maps is up to date, and I was easily directed through the area in a timely manner, and back on the road again. KUDOS to Google. I never leave home without it!
An absolute must have for iPhone 4 & Previous Editions
by F360racer on 2012/12/25 09:07
A lot of the critical reviews I have read are obviously written by iPhone 4S and 5 owners that have full use of the new apple nav app. Google maps is by far the better app than Apple's. First of all my iPhone 4 now has turn by turn navigation in a very easy to use app. It takes a few tries to "find" all the features but so far it has been very accurate and easy to use. I did not have this option or feature with a iPhone 4. I was almost ready to buy the $50 app from the maker of Apple's new nav app as I use them with a dedicated nav device for several years with good success. I have read review after review on nav apps for some time with no clear winner. Until now. I was so excited when I heard about iOS 6 and the new apple maps and turn by turn navigation was finally featured in a native apple app. Wrong! T by T only worked with iPhone 4S's and newer. Plus the now native app was very problematic and unreliable in my area in Seattle, WA. Equally poor in a Phoenix, AZ to San Diego, CA and back trip. For example app couldn't find my hotel on hotel circle in SD. Not anymore... now I have Google Maps to the rescue.
Where did my home go?!
by HAK1 on 2014/05/25 12:39
I love this app...when it works! In fact, Google Maps had become preferable to the OEM navigation system in my Infiniti. However, two problems have made the app intolerable. First, my home seems to no longer exist. My home address has alway been preprogrammed and the app worked without any issues. Unfortunately, the app no longer seems to recognize my home address and simply says "cannot find location" when I select Home or enter my home address (and no, there hasn't been a change to my address or the neighborhood in years!). The only way to choose my home would be to find it on a map and drop a pin. This seems to have happened only since the recent update, so hopefully it will be addressed. Until it is addressed, I really can't use the app. The other problem relates to Bluetooth. When giving voice guidance, the app switches from the radio to voice guidance and "holds my Bluetooth connection" for 10-15 seconds after each instruction is given. So if I'm listening to the radio, a song is interrupted for some 20 seconds every time an instruction is announced. This renders the the voice guidance feature almost intolerable. I really want to love the app again, but will not be able to, until these issues are addressed. I never thought I'd be pining for Apple Maps.
Great app better than Apple maps syncs with Google maps on computer
by Jay steez on 2015/08/07 13:40
I love this review I go to google maps on my computer enter the trip details and it tells me how long via certain routes but the best part is since I registered my account to both google applications I load up Google and the trip I planned on my desktop is already input and I just click start navigation. It shows traffic which is awesome and I can mute it if I want to listen to music and kind of already know where I'm generally going but that way I just peek at my phone for a second see drive 10 miles then mute it. Great app use it 5 times a week easily and I don't have a job so i love it so much I use it sometimes even when I know where I'm going because traffic and times Etc Overall best part is enter direction on google maps on ur computer (while signed into ur gmail) then open the app login ( it doesn't log me out so I only have to enter it once ) so I basically open the app with my directions already in place. Avoids having to be using ur phone while driving and having t to enter details which is easier to enter anyway from a keyboard 5 stars love it
Seriously needs better re-routing capabilities.
by drow93 on 2016/11/21 21:59
I am sitting in traffic on the turnpike because Google maps told me this was the fastest route, despite an accident. It estimated my route (29 miles) would take me 2 hours and 30 minutes. I assumed that this must be incorrect, and refreshed the route. Then it said 45 minutes and did not offer any alternate routes other than the turnpike. So, I figured it must have been a glitch and I took the turnpike. Now that I have been sitting still on this road for a while, google maps thinks I am faced the other direction. Believing that I am headed the other direction, the app is telling me to get off at the exit I got on at, and then get back on the turnpike in the direction of this accident. Furthermore, the app told me that even though this route will take ~2 hours, it is the fastest route. I find this hard to believe, and I am very disappointed. Google owns Waze, one of the best re-routing navigation apps. Google should have learned from this app by now and they should have improved this app. The reason I use this app instead of Waze is because Waze sometimes randomly drops navigation, and I find myself going down a road thinking "hmm, I haven't heard much from my navigation" only to find out that I just added 30 minutes to my trip. Google, please improve the traffic tracking and re-routing capabilities of this app. Thank you
I only wish it was still native rather than 3rd party
by FireFishMike on 2012/12/14 21:42
I love the new Google maps application. However, since it is no longer natively integrated into iOS, something like asking Siri for directions will still use the Apple Maps core technology, which bothers me. Google nailed it from day one with their map technology. The fact that Apple pulled the plug on it seemed completely illogical. I understand the reasoning behind why they did it, but they should've had a viable backup plan before doing what they did. I just wish that I could benefit from Google's map technology in other areas of the phone such as in the reminders app, when I want to be reminded of something when I arrive or leave a certain location. As it is now, whenever I say "remind me to do ... when I get home", The Apple mapping technology is so bad that it cannot process my home address. It actually thinks that I live on the street that is a completely different tone. Of course I never had such problems when Google maps was integrated. So in a nutshell, I really wish that Apple would've somehow allowed Google to integrate this map app Into other key fundamental areas of the iPhone, which Apple is notoriously known for not allowing.
Good app but BAD update
by Badupdatebad on 2015/10/17 03:38
Google maps is still the best choice out there, but the last update (4.11) was a step in the wrong direction. A new to/from/mode of travel box now crowds the top half of the route overview screen. In the past I could glance at the route and maybe zoom in on my destination to know exactly where I was going. Fast, easy, safe. As an emergency worker I don't want to be forced into a step by step sequence that keeps my head buried in the app and frequently doesn't update as fast as I'm moving. Buses and subways don't run to most of my destinations, so I don't need to rapidly change mode of travel. Boxes to change to one's starting point and mode of travel are best left in an unobtrusive menu. These new changes to the interface added nothing but they seriously impaired the ability to use the app for route overview. Other improvements I keep hoping for are adjustable or increased font size and a local option. If the last 50 destinations I entered were in my city, why does google give me a street six states away that sounds similar to a local one I'm looking for? (Voice search seems to completely ignore any local preference...) Here's hoping that Google can fix these issues and keep making its map app better.
Not as easy to use
by fhpotravel on 2015/02/18 22:35
Just updated Gmaps, and frustrated already. This is first app review I have ever written. As full time nomad, I used the app *all* the time to get mileage between points as well as looking at different route options. Just looked at Bay Area to San Diego, only have I5 route so that was useless. Tried routing thru towns along the 101 route and all I get is ads for hotels etc. Trip Advisor is my go-to for that information, backed up by Google search...I need access to quick reliable routing info on a map app. Google, please keep giving us useful features and keep the ads to a minimum on the map app. My hunt for replacement starts now. UPDATE: I was just made a half hour late for appointment. As I followed voice commands for the last stretch to reach my destination, Google gave me three contradictory instructions within 10 seconds. I had already proceeded based upon the first instruction. When I pulled over to check my location on the map, the app froze. I had several more problems with Google Maps, and gave up. Since my initial report, I have come to *never* rely on this app, because it so often does not accurately find me, freezes up, or directions are so off the wall as to be comical. No, it doesn't happen all the time, but enough to be disappointed because it was so good for so long.

1) If you plan a COTA bus before the buses start running for the day, Google maps reports THE LAST bus travel times for the previous day! any bus planning AFTER the buses start running for the day Google maps is accurate. I think there is a bug in how dates are handled before the buses start running for the day. If a route is planned after the buses start running for the day, Google maps works correctly however there are also missing points for traveling by bus that were there. There is. Quality Control issue here. 2) Google does not work well routing a walk in cities like New York or Minneapolis. In New York, it gets caught in a loop and can't figure it's way around; the locals in NY said Apple Maps work better in their city than Google Maps and they are right! in Mini, where walking and biking is popular it favors auto roadways and it routes walks and bike rides that much longer or not practical I think it would better to have the routing broken into several different databases by travel type instead of one big pile of data the way it is now. In its current form it is best used for driving. Having this abstraction would enable safer and better use of travel mapping when not using a car.
While its better than apple maps, it's not perfect
by ddong2lee on 2012/12/15 16:30
It's definitely better than apple maps for my area. It's more accurate especially with points of interests and landmarks. However, it's not perfect. 1. It's missing the reroute function. What happens when a traffic jam occurs out of nowhere and need to reroute? 2. No night mode. While its not the worst thing in the world, to have this screen light up the whole top dash during night driving is not good. 3. The font is smaller than other maps like waze and apple maps during navigation. So it's hard to read at times. 4. Traffic layer disappears when you start navigation. I like to see if I'm stuck in traffic while using the navigation to see how far the traffic is especially if I want to reroute. But maybe since there's no reroute function, they decided to leave this out as well. 5. no integration with contacts. Swriously? thought this would be a no brainer. This is not going to be my go-to-navi. Still sticking with waze as I need the reroute function, the traffic layer, and being able to see alerts like red light camera and police locations. While google maps is still in beta mode, lots of things need to be added for me to come back to it. It's disappointing.
I Like It!!!
by Ben1121(&: on 2013/07/26 18:54
Love the new Google Maps app, an improvement over the old one. The voice driving directions have me preferentially using this app over Waze or the horrendous Apple Maps. In general, I'm not a fan of Apple products as they are WAY overpriced but very poorly engineered. So, I am glad that Google offered an alternative. The only gripe I have with it is it IS a driving map, so whoever did the layout needs to keep in mind that text should be bigger and using a coloring scheme that makes it easier to read this text. That's why I took away one star. We are after all trying to drive and navigate simultaneously. Less time spent looking at the app makes it safer for everyone. The other thing, and this is no fault of Google, is the lousy iOS. Even as I type this review, the wrong letters are being selected for me and for some annoying reason, my cursor jumps to a different part of the text entry screen as I type. Also, the "Submit" button was just clicked on for me even though my fingers where nowhere on the screen. So, you can imagine how inconvenient and potentially dangerous it is to try to manipulate the app while the iOS takes a dump (constantly!).
Does not save last view
by RedElmo on 2012/12/15 01:45
Google Maps may have a better searching function or better 3D view but this app does not save my last settings. I need it to save my last view. Normally I like to check traffic between point A and point B (for example, LAX to Disneyland) and I need a overview of that traffic. The old Google Maps, even Apple Maps saves my last view so everytime I open it I can see the traffic between LAX and Disneyland without having to do anything. The new Google Maps always defaults to my current Location. and I have to spend time typing in LAX and Disneyland just to see the overview of the traffic, it takes too much effort. It doesnt even have a history of the last directions I've searched. I have to type in LAX then type in Disneyland. At least a minimum have a saved last search of previous dirving directions so it only takes one click to see that overview of a certain area. And I HATE that you have to sign in. Why does every company think signing into an account is the way to go. Let me save the searches locally on the phone. I dont need it to show me what i searched on the computer. they are totally different and are used for separate purposes The old google maps before iOS 6 is the BEST! it does and saves everything properly. lets me see full screen with out the bars on top and bottom interfering
Worked like a charm
by satanicsyndrome666 on 2014/05/07 21:02
Don't know what some of the complaints are, but I ran this map app today for the first time on my trip to jersey, and it just worked, something apple's own maps just doesn't do anymore. This app lets you know when to look for turns a good portion before the turn or split in the road comes up, whereas on apple maps, you're doomed if you missed that alert within the 10 seconds of the turn. Landmarks seem to pop up automatically as you type them, just like in google search engine. You can zoom in and out as you are following a gps route in process (can't do that on apple maps). Plus a ton of other very useful features I won't list since I can be sit here all day and probably find a hundred reasons to use this maps app over the native apple iOS one. At this point is suggest to just get the google maps and try it out for yourself. It's that freakin good. Sorry apple, but your maps just don't compare at this point. I haven't used google maps since it was a native app on iOS4, but now that I gave it a test run with stellar results, this is my go to maps app.
Changes Route in the Middle of Driving without Audible Warning
by googlelikestimhortons on 2015/01/16 23:53
I am very dissatisfied with the last update. Took a trip on January 1, 2015 from Massachusetts to Michigan and selected the route that would NOT take us through Canada. Note to google maps - the fastest route is not always the fastest! We did not want to go through Canada and have to wait at customs. We knew what we were doing. SEVERAL TIMES the app changed our route and started to lead us to Canada. I finally saw it in action - a message pops up on the screen with no audio alert “a faster route has been found” and a timer starts that, if you do nothing, will AUTOMATICALLY CHANGE YOUR ROUTE. Do you have any idea how frustrating that is?? Normal people do not stare at their phones while they drive, they listen to the audio commands and look at the phone when things are confusing. At a minimum, this feature needs to give you an audio alert that says the same thing the popup does. I would also recommend the default option NOT be to switch to a different route than the user selected. On the way home we ended up turning google maps off after more of the same rerouting and just went by a printout we made at home. Sad in the information age to be missing the paper atlas.
Google Maps is now the worst nav app
by MartyLK on 2014/10/25 23:00
I've used Google Maps for a long time and relied on it to get me around cities safely. And it used to. In the older version of GM (v. 6), I was able to navigate to a saved location with a single tap on the screen. I would have the app launched and simply swipe right to show all of my saved locations (searched for on the computer and starred to automactically show up in the GM app) and tap the one I needed. GM would immediately begin voice navigation without any further input. And this made for much safer travelling. Minimal time interfacing with the display while driving down the road. That was then, this is now. In v. 7 of GM, they made the interface much more complex and convoluted. There are now a minimum of 6 screen taps to begin a "saved location" navigation. And this is after laucnhing the app and swiping to show your saved locations. There's actually one additional tap of the screen if after swiping your saved locations into view, one of the three showing isn't the one you want. Right now, Nokia's Here Drive is currently the least complex navigation app available for a smartphone or tablet system. There's less interface attention needed, making it the safest navigation app for use while driving.
Finally, Night Mode!
by GPatrick on 2015/08/08 02:00
I am very excited and even relieved that you have finally included a night mode to the iOS app–seriously, it’s a godsend. All around, this is a wonderful app, but there are a few features that are missing. One is the ability to search along my current route; I believe Waze has this, and I know the Road Trippers app does. As another user, bmdelaune, mentioned, having to exit my current navigation and manually search (via voice or typing) and then manually re-route or still manually re-search my original destination and “resume”navigation is inefficient and dangerous. Another feature you actually had included in a past update, but it no longer works without Location History turned on: being able to choose “Home” or “Work” from the “Choose your Starting/Ending Location” drop-down on the directions screen. I do not want Location History to be on, and having to type out my home address every time I’m trying to map out transit directions for later while away from home is greatly annoying. Please fix this! Otherwise, keep up the good work, Google.

by TR298264 on 2016/09/28 21:46
Google maps is my go-to app before I set off into the wild blue yonder. Before I actually get on the road, I like being able to press and hold highway intersections on my trip, then tap the photo. It is very helpful to be able to view the road as if I'm in the car. You can see which lane you need to be in before you're going 60 mph. Also nice to view the surroundings, churches, stores etc. to recognize when you're coming up on a turn, or viewing a destination. My 4th generation iPad and iPhone 5S work just fine for all the things I've used so far. Getting around the app is a little difficult though because symbols are used rather than words. Examples, 3 dots, a triangle, 3 lines, a dot inside a circle, a star...but I'm learning. A few words might be helpful though. I still have difficulty finding my favorites from the top page. I think it's the best map app out there. The verbal directions are great while I'm driving down the road. But I use that sparingly because it uses a lot of data and batteries, like all the other map apps.
Accurate navigation but improvements needed
by gposternak on 2015/09/04 11:42
When Google Maps was part of an iOS, we were able to access iPhone Contact list and choose the destination address from there. I hope this feature will be available in the new Google Maps App. Or, when I "Search" for an address, make Google Maps App look in iPhone Contacs first so when I type "Madison", it shows "Madison Anthony" from my contacts first and then "Madison Square Garden" and "Madison Avenue". Also, when Google Maps was part of an iOS, we were able to quickly access "resent" destinations. I hope that feature also will be available in the new Google Maps App. I also have a suggestion of being able to choose "Drive back using the same route", so when I drove from point A to point B and was NOT following the suggested directions because I knew a shortcut or I had to make an intermediate stop to drop off my shirts at the dry cleaners, I want be able to drive back from point B to point A using the same shortcuts and not forget to pick up my stuff from the shop.
Indispensable app, use regularly
by Rokhugr on 2015/01/10 19:58
Not complicated, better than the map app that came on my iPhone. I use maps while driving and the satellite image and terrain while hiking. I haven't had any routing issues but I don't blindly follow map apps either, if I prefer a different route then I just take it and let the app reroute. I travel 100% of the time for work, and the roads always seem pretty up to date. The sat image is 'relatively' up to date, and there's no rectification issues in the topo drape, at least in the US. Everything lines up well. I have only found one mistake in the road map and submitted to Google, it was fixed in a few weeks. I download maps to my phone prior to traveling internationally and that's priceless when you are avoiding international charges but can't read the road signs! Seriously, that has saved my b*tt. If Google would just add more searchable geographic feature names, or some coordinate grids/locations (lat, long? T and R?) to the 'terrain' it would be perfect in every way :) Actually if there was a geology layer too. I have other apps for those things but it would be nice if it was all in one place...
Great app
by ackbarman on 2013/05/19 22:55
***Update*** To those complaining it can't access your contacts that is Apples fault not Googles. Apple does not allow Google to access the contacts on your phone. Don't give a one star review because of something completely out of Googles control. First off I am constantly surprised at how childish people are. Don't give this app 1 star because they haven't released the iPad app, that won't make it come any faster. It will come one day. This is superior to Apple maps in every single way. The navigation is fast and reliable, the search is useful and comes up with real results (unlike apple maps). I wish they could integrate this with the native iOS API but Apple will never allow that. The only missing feature I see so far is no my places when you are logged in. Hopefully they add that in. People do need to understand that there are many features Google would like to add but Apple does not allow Google to add certain features, if there is a feature missing its most likely Apples fault. Do a little research on the IOS sdk before you get mad.
Not better than the original Google maps.
by ajlajl on 2013/01/01 04:31
Apple maps has been such an utter debacle that this Google maps app had to be highly rated by comparison. I never upgraded from OS5, having been given a heads up from my husband on how badly Apple maps was performing and have really had the chance to really compare the new app to the original. As welcome as the new turn by turn directions are, this maps app is overall much poorer navigation tool than the original. I find navigating the app awkward as the buttons are not intuitive and the new maps app lacks many of the amazing features of the original such as traffic overviews and public transport and walking directions, both which were highly informational and helpful in making decisions. The whole new interface I find awkward to use and it doesn't give me the information I seek. For me, this is one clear instance where the successor is worse than the predecessor. I'm sure if I was subjected to the horror to Apple maps for the past few months, I would consider this app a godsend. But I'm still on the original Google maps and the original is overall WAY better. Please bring back the features and interface of the original. Newer is not always better!
great app!
by thinkdriver8 on 2014/08/03 14:03
I travel fairly frequently and this is my default app for navigation, planning, and finding local amenities (restaurants, pharmacy, grocery, etc.). Love the turn-by-turn navigation in the car. Two suggestions though: first, nav does alert you to the next turn, but when you make that next turn it would be useful to know the turn after. Example: it says 'in one mile turn left on First Street' but could also add ' then in 2 miles turn right on Oak Street.' This would be useful to plan the next turn and know what lane to be in. All big cities have weird intersections where visitors could really mess things up without that advanced planning. Second, at the end of the route it says "your destination is ahead." Would be useful to know if it is on the left or the right, again for advanced planning. I also like how it puts you in the correct parking lot. I was recently using a competitor's product that actually said "navigate off-road to your destination." Yeah, don't think the rental car company would like me navigating off-road. Thanks though. Great app!
Glad it's back and NOW included turn-by-turn
by SimpleScorpio on 2012/12/17 01:02
Wish it had street view 😔 I hate having to sign-in to my google account I don't want EVERYTHING saved or tracked 😡 and the ability to navigate multiple points and an easier way to clear the mapping history OTHER THAN one at a time. I never used the dern thing when it was baked in because it did not have turn by turn 😒 I will now play around with it and use it for a whole but it will not be my only navigational tool... Being an iOS user I had to choose MapQuest as bing was not available (former winmo user) I have several navigation apps so this one is a welcomed addition trying out Nokia's navigational app as well (digging the British voice). waze has to be the cutest hands down... Been using it since Beta Winmo version and continued on iOS. I will come back and update this as I use the app. Ok so today I was sitting in a business right across from a restaurant so I figured since I was bored I'd test navigation. Google Maps accurate (sent me across the street), Nokia Here- accurate (sent me across the street) Apple Maps.... Ummm directed me to the location 20 minutes AWAY... In the neighboring city ummmm yeah no bueno!
Doesn't work 1/3 the time
by Rydersilver on 2016/07/29 18:37
alright.. so I needed to get gas so I look up nearest gas stations. it took me off the freeway and wanted me to take the freeway back in the opposite direction so I said no way and u turned it and kept going. twice more (over twenty mins) it tried doing this and I didn't get off because it wanted me to backtrack so far (this is a populated area there are gas stations in abundance). finally there was a 5 min detour and I didn't need to go the wrong way to get there. "exit left onto terrace Blvd .6 miles". there was no exit left im on the freeway of course. so it "rerouted" without saying it and takes me off the freeway. tells me to turn left which is back onto the freeway going the OPPOSITE direction again. and as I'm turning left guess what I see? a gas station right there. would've been atwo min detour of driving. NAV god likes to play games I see. so I'm stuck on this road that's about to turn into the freeway going the wrong way so I quickly look up directions to work again and it says uturn right before the freeway. (going straight = freeway. there's a slightly earlier turn right to idk where. and there's another road going back from where I just came - which is where I want to go). I'm about to u turn and it's A ONE WAY STREET that's merges with mine.
Great option for a navigation system
by Kep1220 on 2014/09/26 12:00
I've used many navigation systems over the years… Including traditional navigation system is not on the phone like Garman, tom-tom Etc.. As far as navigation on the phone I think that Google Maps definitely rates top as my favorite. I love that it shows alternative routes and shows that "this way" is faster/slower than "that way". I also really love that it shows real time traffic, accident and roadwork. Even though I drive the same way to and from work every day I always load up Google Maps before I leave the house just to see if there's any traffic incidents that could impede my drive. I'm really Glad that the developers changed the way the system was showing your car going the opposite direction on the map for a while! Only thing I would change about the system right now is to add in a destination, like you can if you're using Google Maps on the computer. But that definitely doesn't keep me from using Google Maps as my top navigation system!
Very Disappointed with Google
by DonFerrari on 2015/09/27 15:24
This app has it's pros and cons, but unfortunately the cons are a deal breaker for me. On one hand, it seems to be well-designed. It runs smoothly on my device, it's easy to use while driving, and provides clear directions. On the other hand, it is determined to take routes that are not ideal. So far I have tested it out on a few trips to and from familiar destinations. These are destinations to which I already know the best routes, but this app kept trying to re-direct me. It seems to always prefer secondary routes and back roads, rather than main highways. There are no options in the navigation settings that change this behavior either. I tried to use this app last night when going home from an event that was about 30 miles away, and it only gave me one route option, which was to travel down a number of local roads. Instead, I found my way back to the turnpike and went my own way. My route was a few miles longer, but it was definitely faster. This app, for whatever reason, does not seem to make the distinction between shortest distance and shortest time. I value time much more than my mileage, so therefore this app is pretty much useless to me.

When I went by Kia on November 8, 2016 it really was to look at 2017 Sportage and from their to look at 2016 Rogue before I make my final decision. I had been corresponding with Mike Brand through the Internet for a few days as well as a Nissan salesperson. Both were very nice and after telling them the type of deal I was looking for, both assured me "they would work with me." Upon arriving at Kia, I was introduced to Lance Williams who made the process so simple and easy. I rode in back while he drove for test drive as I told him should I purchase vehicle, that would've been an area I would rarely get to sit. I have to admit, the color got my attention first and it was all uphill from there. Wasn't my intent but left driving my 2017 Sportage! Still learning the operations with Lance encouraging me that I am to call him with any questions and/or concerns at ANY time. Couldn't have asked for a better car "looking" experience or a better salesperson. Since then, he has followed up with a phone call to ensure my satisfaction. Thank you, Lance.
So Fricking ANNOYING
by Merodu on 2015/01/12 16:34
When your app is so annoying that it drives somebody to write a review, something is wrong. When looking for something on my iPad Google Maps, I just want to see options. I want to see WHERE things are, not WHAT they are. I hate that Fricking list. I hate it so, so much. Please don't presume, Google, to know what I'm looking for. You cannot possibly be that good. I want to look for a road name: just zoom in on the road, don't decide to take me to a random business located on that road 30 miles North of me, and then think that if that's not the business I'm looking for, that I must want nothing at all. If I want to see the map, and I tap the map to click off of the list, then my search disappears. That makes this app of zero use to me. Google is trying to be SO smart that it has lost a major part of the functionality: THE MAP!!! I don't want half my screen to be taken up by your list of things you assume I'm looking for. It's called MAPS. I want to see the flipping map. ALL of the map, not just this one section that I can't zoom around in without losing my search term entirely. Congratulations, your app is so stupid that I'm going to throw my iPad across the room and break it. Apple will be happy that I have to buy a new one. I'm going to scream.
Nothing special
by nathanhatton1 on 2012/12/13 06:41
So google maps is back. And it's not honestly any better than apple maps in my opinion. I have faithfully used apple maps since its release and haven't had a single issue with locations being incorrect. And I personally like the lesser amount of detail in apple maps. It fits more with the minimalistic apple style. The google maps app seems very cluttered with so much info on the screen. The options tab on the side is TINY and I found myself consistently missing it and just tapping the map. Turn by turn navigation doesn't look nearly as clean as apple's. The google turn by turn voice is also annoying. Also, the way apple maps shows turn by turn at an angle lets you see what is actually coming next if you look at it. Google turn by turn is all from above so it hinders sight ahead at times. City transportation isn't available for my city, which I find hard to believe, as Cincinnati has a fairly large and prominent metro system. Finally, there is a nice big notice that turn by turn navigation is in BETA. Same as apple. In the end, I'm not that impressed and plan to continue using apple maps.

It's a good app. I like that you can add stops along the way for things like coffee and gas. I do not like that there is a "1" bubble on the app signaling that I have a notification, but I can't find that notification in the app.

Excellent directions but announcements poor
by BobT1962 on 2017/01/15 18:07

by iPapa uPapa on 2017/01/15 00:04
Ok, I've loved maps all my life, and Google's aren't much if you're into maps the old fashioned way.
The kind where I won't have to make too many street turns, or be too vigilant for next turn direction (only to save 2 min on an hour long ride)... as long as it does not increase the travel time by... say 5%.

by Taddyter on 2017/01/14 20:28
It's on overall good navigator.

Has several issues
by By c# software developer on 2016/06/05 16:43
1) If you plan a COTA bus before the buses start running for the day, Google maps reports THE LAST bus travel times for the previous day! any bus planning AFTER the buses start running for the day Google maps is accurate.

Newer is not always better!
great app!
