I’m sure it’s a great vpn but I can’t tell bc they just want my money
by slytherin swag on 2019/11/19 17:16
They offer a “free” version with enough data to last 5 minutes. It’s completely useless. Which is really sad bc the design is really cute and user friendly. I love their adblocker tho.

Does NOT work in China.
by roxannerocket on 2019/11/18 01:55
I purchased a month of Tunnel Bear because I was going on a trip to China. It only worked in one city the entire time. Everywhere else I was kicked off within seconds. I don’t recommend this for visiting China. Disappointed I paid for it.

I fell for this after reading the article [an advertising piece really] “Stay Safe with a VPN” in the December 2019 edition of Mac|Life magazine. TunnelBear is OK & very easy to use BUT it’s SLOW & has few servers. Bottom line, I REGRET THIS PURCHASE—I WOULD NOT BUY IT AGAIN.

Great App to Stay Secure

I’ve installed this on both my daughter and my phone and it is easy to use. It is informative and keeps you up to date with your status as well.
Not reliably active
by TK of TF on 2019/11/15 14:58
Makes me feel secure when I see it on, but often I open up my phone and find it’s not active and I need to activate it again. In a hurry I don’t want to have to check off the app is still on. Some warning would be nice if it’s been disconnected?

My new favorite VPN
by PacificRy on 2019/11/13 21:31
I’m really loving this app. The most important thing is that the internet speed is fast. Second, is that it’s quick and easy to use. As a bonus, the bear theme is so whimsical and fun. What’s not to love! The only thing I’d improve are the shortcuts accessed when you Haptic Touch the app icon. For me it says “connect” when I’m already connected, and “disconnect” when I’m not connected. So it seems reversed for some reason, and it’s kind of confusing. Other than that, the app seems pretty flawless!
Works but....
by Kitteneyez on 2019/11/13 16:16
With the most recent iPhone update, TunnelBear keeps disconnecting and has a difficult time reconnecting when the app is open. I just updated to the most recent update and it is still not functioning the same.
Not working on iPad with iOS 13
by mgdj on 2019/11/13 04:20
It’s not working. Having the same problem as Natquebec on Nov. 2nd. In a hotel with a public WiFi and Tunnel bear won’t complete the connection. If I turn it off I can surf. If there is a solution, please god post it somewhere someone can easily find. I could not find it. Read Natquebec’s problem when I went back to the App Store to see if I actually had the right app. After trying for an hour, I’m turning in and don’t have time to contact App Support to work through it. If I knew it was an issue I would have done it hours ago. If I can’t get it to work soon, I’m removing the app. If I can’t use it, which I haven’t been able to, it’s useless.

Free!!!
by gregory smegory on 2019/11/10 15:35
This app is free and it gives no pressure whatsoever to upgrade and the free version works great! It even allows you to expand the amount of data you get for the month by sharing it with a friend or tweeting the app out on twitter. This app is great and I would definitely recommend if you want to stay safe or change your virtual location.
Simply doesn’t work
by C_fern on 2019/11/10 12:41
I’ve had the free version for several months now as a backup VPN, vital if you’re living in China. It has never connected in all the time I’ve had it. Not even once! I would never consider paying for this app.
Auto connect doesn’t work

Keeps Disconnecting Fixed
by AF Madre on 2019/11/10 03:08
The update fixed that problem. My only frustration now is that some apps like Xfinity don’t always work with it. I have to disconnect TunnelBear for the app to update then I can reconnect. My TunnelBear has started to disconnect when the screen goes black & then sometimes fails to reconnect. This does not happen every time, but it is very frustrating.
Good
by drjonnt on 2019/11/08 21:10
has functioned very well. Had recent problem with partial iCloud connection error when connecting through US or Canadian access points, but resolves when I connect through other countries. Seems to be an IP blocking ‘feature’ of Apple servers, not problem of TB. A bit of problem reaching support but when I did, they were prompt to reply.

Default is disconnected
by An4542111 on 2019/11/06 07:23
The service is smooth when it is turned on, but you have to do it manually and it disconnects frequently without notification. Unless you’re paying close attention, your traffic will be exposed. Therefore the subscription is useless. I do not recommend.
Constantly disconnecting
by ike_mobile on 2019/11/05 03:13
Update: The bears at TB are extremely quick to respond to problems and contacted me immediately (and several times) in order to instruct me how to resolve the connection issue. They are polite, knowledgeable and dedicated. Everything works fine now, thanks to the wonderful team at TunnelBear! **************+ I have loved and been using TunnelBear for years with a premium subscription. Since that latest iOS update, I am constantly being disconnected and it won’t auto-reconnect as it used to. I am on the current TB version 3.2.2 which was supposed to fix this issue. It has not... Please do something to get this wonderful service back up and running properly again!

Will not stay connected.
by Screedyg on 2019/11/03 21:41
*Updated* So from what I've read the main problem involved IOS 13 killing background apps. This explains the problem with the vpn not staying connected if the phone locked or was powered down. However, I had to find this out on my own. The tunnelbear version update notes only had cutsey bear references and jokes. I'm paying for a vpn service, not jokes people. I will be looking elsewhere when my subsciption is up. Running IOS 13.1.3 with the latest tunnelbear update. Connect on demand does not work. You have to manually start the service, but once the phone locks it will disconnect. It will not alert you or prevent you from connecting to the internet. There is a reason that I use a VPN. This is unacceptable. I will remember this when it cones time to renew my subscription.
Very easy to connect and operate!
by TxAgjb69 on 2019/11/03 15:21
This is a great app that is very easy to install, connect and use. The prompts are easy to follow for a non-tech nerd. Great for added web security.
Connection instability.
by NW Drizzle on 2019/11/03 15:08
Updated review: The developer update returned the app to excellent connection stability. After monitoring for several days, it is always connected again. Thanks. I’m no longer looking for a new VPN. App was great for a while, but now turns itself off every time iPad or iPhone sleeps. Does not automatically connect now. Time to look for a different VPN.
Working now!
by Natquebec on 2019/11/02 22:26
Unfortunately bought a yearly subscription as I had read great reviews. It works on my iPhone that has AT& T, but I don’t get it for my iPhone. I got it for my iPad that is WiFi only so I could use my iPad on public WiFi such as hotels, coffee shops etc. The app either goes wild (on my home WiFi) and the switch starts going on and off every 1/2 seconds or when on a public WiFi, I just can’t do anything on my iPad: can’t check e-mails, can’t get onto ANY websites using Safari etc. I turn it off and immediately I can surf the net. I contacted support and their solution could not even be done on the iPad. Do not bother getting this if u have an iPad or PLEASE only get free one and do a long trial first! Updated review: The technical staff worked with me non-stop till it worked. Moreover, the update so far works well with iOS13. So far TB has worked on public WiFi and at home. Hopefully it will work next time I go to s hotel.
Would not recommend

iOS 12.1.3 Not working with TunnelBear for any reason
by Wanobioo on 2019/11/02 17:36
I recently got a new iPhone to discover I cannot use TunnelBear app anymore, since slowly but surely will stop working with any Apple device, today after almost 2 weeks with the issue I took the phone to the Apple Store, basically the Apple ID reachable at: “displayed” my phone number twice, making the phone to lost sim card signal or not working how it supposed to be, Apple told me to get a new sims card, then follow few steps like reset networks, restart the phone as a new device, but even now my wife new iPhone is doing the same, today one of the Apple guy erased the app and told me, I have to stop using the Tunnel Bear, if I want to access Apple ID or any Comcast Email account. I’m not sure what’s the deal since the main reason I got a VPN was to protect any access to my smart devices when I’m not at home or while I am using any unprotected WiFi’s on a daily basis. Like on airports or else. I hope there’s a way to keep using Apple products and TunnelBear apps otherwise, it’s just a waste of time and money from my point of view. Anything is working how it supposed to be lately. It’s just a bunch of new gadgets and updates with less securities. 🤔 Updates: Last night I found out my VPN keep disconnecting and basically it’s always off. Not sure if this is related to the new version update, I already erased and downloaded once again. I wonder what’s the problem. It was on DEFAULT instead of IKEv2, now it shows a new OpenVPN. 10/31/19 “It looks like it‘s fixed after the last update: Version 3.2.2”

Constantly Goes Off
by Yup exactly on 2019/11/01 12:43
I love having a VPN, but considering it is supposed to provide mild protection with web browsing, the app constantly switches off on its own. On the computer, you can opt to ensure you cannot web browse without the VPN active, but on the phone app, I’m constantly switching the VPN on before I browse because it shuts itself off. There should be an option on the app where your phone doesn’t allow you to browse or get online until the VPN is active.

10/30/19 review
by GuyGene on 2019/10/30 22:12
...Craigslist won't even work with it! I used IPVanish over a year and stopped it for Tunnel Bear because it was acting strange and slow too. Hey, if anyone ever finds a good VPN that doesn't slow to a crawl, let me know. Okay, 1/11/18: whew, it's gotten worse, slower. Think I'll cancel this and keep searching. iPVanish lasted me about two years, tunnelbear only a few months. 1/17/18: I tried what TB recommended. Auto connect, and it got faster! From 25 download to bit over 100! Connected to Mehico City! Then, I needed to log on to AmEx account, and it was in Spanish!! With a Spanish ID in login field and password field already filled in!! I had to clear cookies from Safari to go to my own American Express account, in English! What a mess. I’m trying my best to like TB, but think I’ll have to get refund and try ExpressVPN next. Hey, VPN maker boys, can you please get this VPN stuff right?! Build it (a fast, reliable, all around excellent VPN app) and we WILL come with credit cards open for y’all to keep sucking lucres from. Well, seems to have gotten a bit better. But I still have to use TWO of them, this and ExpressVPN. Changing back and forth depending on which one is not hibernating that day. Yesterday in a speed test, TB was faster than Express. Still only 12 mbs download on MediaKom, Midwest Sektor IPS.
Grrrrrr... bye bye bear
by Rrrrrrrinnnnnn on 2019/10/30 21:57
I’ve been very happy with the paid app version for years. Now tunnel bear stops working without warning, and no kill switch. I’ve been in coffee shops, doctor office, etc. thinking vpn was working. Not happy. I contacted customer service days ago, they said they’d let me know when there was a fix. I’ve already found another service.
Won’t renew.
by Doyle Blunderman on 2019/10/30 21:42
I paid a premium for this VPN, thinking I’d be covered. Nope. It pops off for no reason. No thank you. It’s a waste of money. This app won’t stay connected. It’s like paying for a 20 ounce coke, and getting only 10 ounces. No matter what I do, it won’t stay connected.

by SoxFan82 on 2019/10/30 20:50
V 3.2.2 was introduced today to combat the random disconnects / not reconnecting after. But after downloading it, now TunnelBear won’t connect at all. I’ve tried every combo of settings possible in iOS. Looking forward to version 3.2.3, please...
Autoconnect doesn’t work
by DK_TO on 2019/10/30 20:45
Fails to autoconnect to Wifi or cellular EVERY time, even when app and iOS settings are set to do exactly this. Must manually open TunnelBear app and turn on VPN every single time you unlock your phone. Very poor stability!
Differences iOS vs Android
by RN I kinda hate U all on 2019/10/30 17:55
Although I hate Android I don’t get why tunnel bear app with a Samsung phone stays connected just fine instead with iOS on an iPhone 8+ every time that I am not using the phone tunnel bear disconnects itself and when I open any app on it it doesn’t even reconnect automatically it just stays like that, disconnected. If I connect it boom! Once again the vicious circle starts, it’s just the same every-time I have not my iPhone on my hands :( overnight is the most clear example, I put the phone down and when I get it back in the morning I see that it was totally unprotected -connected to the WiFi but not with the vpn active. :((((

Disconnects all the time
by Bwv878 on 2019/10/29 23:40
I like the desktop version, and the app used to work pretty well on iPhone, but with recent updates it disconnects constantly.
Potentially dangerous
by Tom.Phoenix on 2019/10/29 23:10
The current version of the app, on both my iPhone and my iPad, frequently disconnects from the VPN without warning or alert to the user. If the tunnel is closed, the app should try to reopen it. If it cannot reopen, it should block unprotected Internet traffic. At the very least, the app should alert the user that the tunnel has closed. There is no excuse for failing to do *any* of these things. (The tunnel software knows when the connection is broken. Why doesn’t it tell the user such an important piece of information?) This allows other apps to make unprotected connections to the Internet until the user recognizes the problem andmanually turns the service back on. Many people rely on a VPN to keep their private information away from their employer or government. No bear pun is clever enough to get your information back once it has been revealed. I hope this dangerous situation will be fixed soon.

Voiceover friendly
by deena karbo on 2019/10/28 17:33
This gets a five star because it works excellent. It does exactly what I needed to do. I don’t use it on an ongoing basis but if I did I would gladly pay for a subscription to upgrade beyond the amount of data allowed each month. Also most applications do not tell you whether they are friendly for VoiceOver/or other screen reading technology or not. This one does work with VoiceOver… I am blind and I have an iPhone 7. It works perfectly and is extremely easy. There was no learning curve at all… It just took a couple of minutes to figure out the interface and voilà… Done and working great. I am using iOS 13.1.3 with no problems.

VPN doesn’t Auto-Connect on Mobile
by Hahaahaha on 2019/10/26 17:19
Tunnelbear has served me well over the years, however, lately I can’t keep my VPN to stay connected. It seems like every 15 minutes I have to go to the Tunnelbear app and manually turn it on after it abruptly turns off. This shouldn’t even be an issue; a VPN should never allow you to connect to a website until it’s turned on. Yet lately this has been the case more often than not. Please fix this issue, it’s a relatively recent one (didn’t happen in the past) but it’s really making me consider switching to a different VPN provider.

Works great for us...
by CED6870 on 2019/10/24 02:02
As advertised easy to try no cost version! Many “free” trials want your C.C. And are so limited it is not a trial. I tried a few & Tunnel Bear’s IP worked where other VPN’s IP were blocked by my finance app. We cruise by sailboat to some very remote international places that have IPs that are generally blocked by all our financial apps. Finance apps seem to get savvy and block suspect VPN IPs as well. Tunnel Bear just works all the time, I hope they can keep their IPs “clean” and unblocked! By the way I used Tunnel Bear to write this review since iTunes is blocked from our current location.
Horrible
by Justme821 on 2019/10/23 21:54
I hate this app it has been nothing but trouble since I download it. I can’t even figure out how to cancel it. Stupid app. I want to cancel.
Broken
by rocoolboy12345 on 2019/10/23 19:33
The button to activate it doesn’t do anything when I want to turn it off. It is glitchy. It won’t connect to my internet. When I want to deactivate it while it’s connecting it just glitches when I press the button and I have to take 2 minutes just trying to find out how to deactivate it or I can’t even USE the internet because it turns the devices WiFi ability off while trying to connect. I will keep this app on for a while to see if this is fixed quickly and if it will be with it after the next update. Until then... I will just use a different one.

Doesn’t work like I hoped
by Abzhar on 2019/10/22 17:56
I have tried to use it 3 times. All 3 times it spins as if it is trying to connect but never shows that it does. This last time, it said I got a message later that I used up my free usage and should upgrade. Free versions are supposed to show you how valuable the app is and is worth the money. I did wonder if it would work in a smaller setting - I was trying in an airport and conferences. But if it doesn’t work then why would I want it?
Don’t use if you’re deployed
by JDogg1272771 on 2019/10/21 18:23
If you happen to be deployed and you’re looking for a VPN, don’t buy this one. Myself along with all of my coworkers each bought a heat subscription for $60 and this VPN is useless. When it actually connects it doesn’t work half bad, but good luck getting it to connect. Most of the time is tries to connect and just times out and slows your phone down forcing you to exit the app and reload it to try and stop it from the never ending cycle of trying to connect. Internet works fine without it, other VPNs work, but not TunnelBear, save your money and do some research about different apps to use. Highly disappointed.

Drastically slows down the internet
by Duane Williams on 2019/10/18 13:46
I’ve experienced slowdowns of 90%, making the internet unusable. It sure is secure, though, if you can’t use it. The app frequently has no idea where I’m located in the world. I’ll be on the Pacific Ocean and it will think I’m on the East Coast of the U.S.
Buena app

Hi! This is really great app. I have a question, does it exists a proxy server in Colombia?
Disappointed

TunnelBear works great on my Samsung phone but on my iPad it’s quite frustrating because it’s extremely slow I mean really slow to the point where I’m just turning it off because it ain’t getting anywhere.

The app works as expected, it’s a simple VPN. If you go with the free plan, and run out of data you are given the option to download on a computer for an extra 1GB of data. Except they only give you half that amount. They also say to tweet at them for another 1 GB and they will reply and reward it within an hour. It’s now been two tweets and days later with no reply or extra data given to me. If you’re going to pay for a VPN, there are ,ich better ones (basically all of them) that won’t lie to you about what they offer. If they lie about the simple amount of data you’ll get, why would you EVER trust them to keep your personal information safe? Update for the developer response: obviously nothing is stopping the data from going to my account because I still received HALF the amount promised. If something were preventing me from getting data, I wouldn’t have gotten any. TLDR; the app lies, don’t expect any of your information to be safe because what they say isn’t true.

The new map/map colors are weird... and why it crashes?
by Kfihek on 2019/06/21 06:43
So, been successfully and proudly using Tunnel Bear for years now, minor hiccups here and there, got used to how it works but now since the recent update of few days ago like June 19th or 18th 2019 where supposedly there are redesigned maps (..) it crashes..like I open the app, the weird color (in my opinion awful..) map appear, there's a sheep now in the middle of nowhere, I click on connect, the map turn of bright colors again, the sheep turns to a bear and everything is working smoothly. Then after a while I want to get back to the app and it simply crashes. It won't open anymore so that in order to disconnect for instance I had to literally delete it from my iPhone and install that again... Mh... why is that? Fix this annoying bug please... and maybe I get that the "visual of a no-color map" turning bright when you're connected and "dark" again when not, might be appealing but I don't personally like that :-/
Pretty good
by Dalton Ames on 2018/05/18 03:21
Update May 17: I have noticed that since Mcafee bought them out the app has not functioned as well. Before Mcafee, it would smoothly connect in the background and the kill switch was visibly working - disconnecting the WiFi and then reconnecting once the VPN was active - now it allows my device to be connected to untrusted WiFi for long periods of time before the VPN kicks in. Is my data stream compromised at that point? Furthermore I have had a much more difficult time connecting to networks than I ever did before and have had to delete and reinstall the app a couple of times. This app worked flawlessly last year. Now, not so much. I used the free 500mb allotment for several months before buying a year long membership. Very easy to use, lowest price I could find for a year long VPN, passes all the DNS leak and IP tests I could find and depending on which server I choose doesn’t slow down my connection much at all. I really like the kill switch, auto-connect and trusted network features. My only concern is the shortage of servers. Most other VPNs have dozens or even hundreds worldwide. In a practical sense though this hasn’t impacted me at all.
[update] Love it! Latest update w/iOS 11 stopped auto connect
by mucci314 on 2017/09/25 21:54
The company responded to my concern within about 24 hours, very timely, especially over the weekend. They informed me that they were aware of the issue and a fix was already in place, pushed to an update: 2.7.1. I updated and voila! it appears to have been resolved. Thanks for your positive and timely response! Very happy with the performance of the app, as well as the ethics and care from this company so far. I absolutely love TunnelBear. After researching a ton of VPNs and their behaviors and perks, I decided upon TB. No logging. Excellent encryption. Auto connect. No speed loss that I’ve noticed. I only have one gripe with the latest update / move to iOS 11. The VPN never seems to auto connect anymore. Every time either the device loses or sleeps the connection, or switches between cellular and WiFi, TunnelBear disconnects and never attempts to reconnect like it used to. Please fix this. It’s now incredibly frustrating to have to manually go to the app to reconnect to VPN every time this happens. And it happens way more often than I thought or ever noticed. Thanks.
Works Fairly Well, But, ... Update, 12 Jan 19
by CJC0201 on 2019/01/12 17:12
... like most VPN’s I’ve tried, if the bandwidth isn’t big enough, it’ll block WiFi access until you turn it off ... But for the most part, very little hesitation experienced for its automatic operation when joining WiFi networks ... Developer has to work on settings access: I have to either turn-on or turn-off VPN operations in order for the settings node to highlight and become available for access ... - don’t know why ... (???) ... it just doesn’t work very well for public WiFi’s. I’m sure it’s a bandwidth problem that prevents VPN activation and internet access ... works great at home, and in other household/private locations. But if I end-up using cellular service - which I trust - then why bother having VPN service ? ...

Completely stopped internet access
by The Feeba on 2018/06/27 15:05
So for the past day I was completely without internet access, even with WiFi. I was really confused, so I tried deleting TunnelBear and that’s exactly what it was. The app only allows you to use 500MB of VPN use per month, which lasted me less than a day. The app does not even notify you when you have ran out. Even when you have the VPN disconnected on the phone it still doesn’t allow internet use, you have to completely delete the app. This VPN is useless, the free version only allows you 500MB which lasts less than a day and then it forces you to put in your password to purchase the premium version. I will never use this app again and I recommend it to no one.
Wanted to like it...
by Tyce Martin on 2018/06/11 18:02
So, I thought having a VPN to add extra security, especially while I’m using public WiFi (which is rare) would be great, but I have had nothing but trouble with TunnelBear. I can live with using Safari’s version of Google and it recognizing me in the country I have tunneled to, so at least I know it’s working but that’s only about a quarter of the time. The rest of the time the app is disconnecting and I’m constantly having to manually open the app and turn it off/on or tunnel to a different location to get it to connect again and it’s a major pain. When you try to access some of your other apps, if TunnelBear is on, it may not grant you access, and internet pages take longer to download, even in WiFi! My phone is not that old and my software is up to date and all that jazz, blah blah. There is no reason I should be having this much difficulty. I bought one a month subscription and am so glad I didn’t get the full year because I will not be renewing it.
Unsubscribing after McAfee acquisition
by Djs2291 on 2018/04/03 14:32
TunnelBear was great, but I do not trust McAfee to not run it into the ground, and more importantly now that they have a US parent company they will certainly be required to hand over all of your browsing history to the US government without a warrant and without informing the user. I will be unsubscribing, uninstalling, and with any luck getting a pro-rated refund. Edit: I understand that Tunnelbear as a company would like to continue operating independently, and maybe you will. That does not change the fact that you are now subject to US law as your parent company is based in the US, and no matter how much you don't want to surrender browsing data at some point you'll either do it willingly or the Feds will just come take it. I have reached out to support regarding a partial refund but I have not received a response yet. I guess after Tunnelbear gets your money they no longer care, which doesn't inspire much hope regarding your future.
Easiest 5Star review in yrs.
by LifegiantInk on 2018/10/02 18:59
The VPN bar has been set very high with the exit of Opera VPN. I can wholeheartedly say, TunnelBear, has exceeded my needs and expectations. I started on the free trial, that ‘YES’ does limit the data to 500mb, p/month. A. I have yet to find ANY TRULY FREE, VPN, and I mean free of ads that interfere with my experience directly.{Especially the speed and ease of integration of the VPN client within iOS’s feature utilizing a VPN Service. As well as free as in ,’no cost ever at any point’, so tunnel bear for my needs, is my, highly scrutinized decision, #1 choice. BONUS NOTE:* Spread the Tunnel Bear word on Twitter and receive a Gig, of EXTRA MONTHLY DATA =1500mb!! If you need more, their subscription service is again, priced more competitively than any other “COMPARABLE” VPN. Tunnel Bear, ‘Ballistic VPN’, that is THAT.
Easy to use, Cheap, Works Great!
by jmac93427 on 2018/03/20 03:58
TunnelBear is a great VPN! It has a very simple user interface that anyone can figure out! Even though it has a limited number of servers, it is a fast VPN. I have had nothing but success with all of the servers I have used, but I prefer to leave it on automatic. 500MB per month might seem a little bit low, but that's for free! I did do the review which gave me 1GB additional for the first month. I have read that you can do that every month for an extra 1GB. I only use VPN for things that are extremely sensitive, so I am perfectly fine with the 500MB. All in all, it's a fantastic application and it's very inexpensive! If I could give this six stars, I would! Great job TunnelBear! As the Bear 🐻 says, Rawr!
Not keeping up
by Metaweb20 on 2018/06/04 22:08
I’ve been using Tunnel Bear for years and have been extremely happy until recently. I don’t feel that Tunnel Bear is keeping up with the changing Internet landscape and customer needs. Recently Tunnel Bear started pushing my VPN connection point to San Francisco, but I live in Central Time, which means you can’t watch prime time streaming shows as they come on after I’m in bed. Previously my connection point was always NYC area. Tunnel Bear’s response? Log off and on until you win the lottery and get NYC. I do that now, but after 10 attempts, I usually give up. Other VPN services are cheaper with user-selectable connection points. Tunnel Bear also doesn’t offer smart DNS and has given up on outsmarting Netflix and other services. Basically, Tunnel Bear grew a huge customer base, but now they are resting on their laurels and have forgotten us.
Affordable, fast, and user friendly.
by hexatech vpn on 2019/07/13 20:54
The title pretty much sums it up. I am not a techy nor am I 100% technologically challenged. I live on the internet, but not doing anything that requires Tor or anything that I don’t even pretend to understand the meaning or function of. If you want fast affordable and easy to use protection simply because it is nobody’s business what you are doing on the internet or where you are while you are doing it, then TunnelBear is the VPN for you. I used the free version to begin with, just to check it out. Worked great but kept dropping signal. I signed up for the Grizzly account for a year the beginning of December 2018 and never looked back. Highly recommend.
VPN for the non-technical
by Muzical84 on 2019/07/25 14:22
I’m a technical person, but if I was setting up a VPN for someone who wasn’t, this is what I would use. Everything that CAN be put into Grandma-friendly language is, and it Just Works. The feature that I probably use the most on iOS and macOS is the option to automatically connect on anything that isn’t your home WiFi. (On iOS, you can even connect automatically on cellular.) It’s literally the “set it and forget it” option. I wouldn’t mind if the app supported larger font sizes, but that’s about it. I also use ProtonVPN for when I need more granular control, but this is a good option for 99% of the population.
Everyone should be using a VPN!!
by skathleen on 2018/04/02 21:04
I work in the technology sector. When I talk with people about using a VPN on their mobile device or computer, I get a naive response that they aren’t doing anything that requires privacy. So does that mean you are willing to have cameras installed in your house where people can see what you are doing 24/7? I understand the leap in that logic but EVERYONE should be concerned about their privacy and do everything they can to protect it. Once information is “out there”, you don’t get to take it back. TunnelBear is so easy to use and there service is fairly priced. Their service is great. Please get this app and use it.
Simple, fast and secure
by Justcallmed on 2018/12/23 19:11
I've tried dozens of vpns but tunnel bear makes using a vpn quick and easy. I'm able to use my account across multiple devices and have never run into an issue with anything software related yet. The interface is polished and clean which I like. The performance is what I like best: I get the security of a vpn without any compromise in wifi or data speed. I appreciate that they share how they're audited and very throughout in their description of how and what they collect data wise (which btw is not a whole lot) from users. I bought the $10 a month plan and have zero regrets. Well done tunnel bear 🐻!
Most carefree/reliable VPN
by DanWV175 on 2019/06/11 18:24
I’ve tried a few VPNs (Norton, Nord, Windscribe). TunnelBear fits my needs best. I’m using it to secure my data on public WiFi and to have a US connection when traveling abroad. I like that it connects automatically on unknown networks and I can choose safe networks when it isn’t needed at home, etc. I’m currently at a resort roaming from WiFi hotspot to hotspot. It does a great job connecting with each move from access point to access point. This is where the Norton product failed me in the past. I’ve been using the pay version for several months. It does its job without much fuss.
This app? Meh.
by WhoIsVic on 2019/06/20 09:55
I have had this VPN installed for over 6 months and I’m not a fan. I mostly use this app on my iPhone. When I’m on a public network, the app just blocks all traffic. My phone shows I’m connected to cellular data, but nothing works until I turn off wireless. The app also prevents my security camera feed from loading, even if it lets me connect to the WiFi. It only allows the camera feed to work if I’m on a trusted network. On my laptop, I have to turn off the VPN or add the network as a trusted network to get online, pretty much defeating the purpose. After I’ve added a network to the trusted list, it tells me to turn on the VPN, like its not running. I was excited for it, but I think there are better choices with less complications. I’ll find out soon enough.

Makes it look like you are somewhere else in the World. Interesting how different web searches are in different countries. Easy to use on both iPhone and MacBook Pro. The only problem I had on the MBP is the background processes chew thru the free data quickly. I didn’t have this issue on my iPhone. Also, on MBP, at one point I think I forgot to turn it off or I closed the app and it was still running.....I think you have to shut it off in the app on MBP and then quit the app. Great free program. 500mb/month free and 1gb free to put on ur computer and 1gb free monthly for tweeting about Tunnelbear. Frickin’ awesome
Frustrating connection issues
by jeff2715 on 2018/06/18 21:40
Several times in the month I’ve had TunnelBear, the connection is made and immediately broken. Then the process of connecting to the server starts over again. This happens during the early evening more than any other time. This leads me to believe there are too many users and not enough servers to handle the traffic. This will prevent your computer from closing the app, and from turning off. Additionally, the 176 Mbps service I have gets chopped down to 20 or less during high traffic hours it was under 5 mbps. I expected a slowdown but not that degree. Update. After a constant run around with the same recommendations from tech support and answering the same questions multiple times, I’ve decided just to give up on this app and uninstall it from my computer.
No customer service
by Tradewindtraveler on 2018/08/07 16:33
I accidentally bought a year long subscription to TunnelBear instead of buying the monthly subscription as I did not realize the portrayed monthly price was for a one time year payment. I immediately contacted customer support through their email after finding out they have no phone customer service and asked to be switched to the monthly plan and a refund for the year subscription. After a week of receiving no reply at all from tunnel bear even though on the site in says up to a week of wait time, I contacted them again. After contacting tunnel bear at least 10 times I have gotten no reply from customer service. I’m very unhappy with the service and as I am a student the price for a year subscription was a big loss for me. I would not recommend this service to anyone.
Better all the time!

Now with auto-connect (among other great features), Tunnel Bear is indeed a very friendly app whose developers and “bears” really seem to care about their product and their customers. Thank you! Re your 3rd party audit: Very impressive and appreciated! Thank you for undertaking this process and sharing the results. I only wish your service was consistently faster than it is, swinging from very slow to very fast. Usually slowest of three VPNs I've tried. Disappointing and frustrating because I want to use TunnelBear exclusively.
Pretty good
by Aleksey8 on 2019/04/18 00:24
So far I’m using the free version and it works pretty well. I previously used CyberGhost’s free trial and between the two I like CyberGhost. TunnelBear sometimes take a little longer to connect, and it’s missing the crucial option to turn on a connection WITHOUT removing my home WiFi from the trusted networks list. That’s a big plus of CyberGhost. Also, I wish TunnelBear had more pricing options. For example, I can get CyberGhost for 3 years for only $99. On the other hand, TunnelBear costs almost $60 just for one year. That’s a big difference! Overall, TunnelBear is a decent VPN and is great for the very minimum, or a beginner VPN service. I appreciate that they still have a free tier available.
Cool but...
by Champion.#2 on 2019/09/01 23:12
So far I like the app, but there are iOS quirks in my experience. For example, getting VPN on one of the prominent US cellular carriers is iffy. For a test I tried to connect to a handful of non-US servers. I never was able to connect— but the app tries over and over to reconnect. While endlessly trying to reconnect my data connection was basically unusable. What’s more is the TunnelBear app kept try to re-connect even when I toggled it off. This occurred even via iOS Settings. It was like a ghost in the machine that kept re-toggling the connection to “On”. Pretty frustrating not being able to disable a process on my iPhone. I was finally able to get TunnelBear to quit trying by activating airplane mode and closing the app.
Regular disruptions of service, not recommended.
by Goredough on 2018/09/01 22:35
This app seems to perform better on my iPhone than on my laptop, where it continually disconnects and reconnects (sometimes several times within just one minute). This has caused several disruptions in my workflow which can slow down productivity significantly. I have notified TunnelBear about these issues and submitted error reports with zero response thus far. If I don’t get a response (or a miraculous improvement) soon I will have to request a refund and try another app.
Great but sometimes have to close application
by Bob W OR on 2019/03/08 01:12
Really like TunnelBear vpn. Having some issues with using on some sites where the site just won’t function through the vpn. Even with TunnelBear vpn turned off, still won’t work and I have to manually close the TunnelBear application to get the site to work through WiFi. So, defeats the purpose of a vpn. Happens every other day or so to me on public or home WiFi and I can’t tell a pattern. Always with safari or iOS though since I’m always on an apple product.
Left me out in the cold
by Bertonski on 2018/02/19 15:26
From day one this app slowed down my data on my 7S until I had to turn it off most of the time just to connect. Finally last night cellular data on my phone WOULD NOT WORK at all while I was stuck downtown late at night alone in the freezing cold and needing Uber to work to request a ride! I tried turning off VPN, removing Tunnelbear as a VPN, and deleting the app, rebooted my phone like six times, finally had to do a hard reset on my entire phone and wait while shivering and freezing on a street corner to re-install my apps to call a car. Data finally worked again after that. I will never re-install this app nor trust it for my loved ones to use either. Just too risky losing data at the worst possible time.
Great vpn
by Youpain on 2019/07/13 21:29
Great app. But the new update(3.01) has a bit of an issue when shutting down TunnelBear. When I disconnect it’ll show a loading icon that never goes away so I get out of the app thinking that it’ll disconnect eventually. It doesn’t. On the top left of my screen it’ll show the vpn icon again. So I’ll go back on the TunnelBear app to shut it off and close the app only for it to show the vpn icon on the top left of my screen. After doing this dance for a while longer I’m finally able to turn TunnelBear off.
Does Strange Things
by Marty1313143 on 2019/07/04 13:45
Just purchased a 1 month subscription as I am travelling and using some public wifi. TB worked at first but I have had 3 unusual experiences that made me delete the app. First as I was tunnelling from the US to Canada the map suddenly showed my location just off Africa. A second attempt worked briefly but then my location was moved to the Bermuda Triangle. The kill switch did not work! Finally as I attempted to turn the service off it simply cycled back on repeatedly. Don’t trust it. Won’t use it. Deleted it! Developer reached out (3.5 months after the fact) and provided an explanation for the Bermuda location. Perhaps this should have been noted in the app or certainly when Bermuda popped up. It is a valid explanation. Still unsure if i would use the app again in a hotel public wifi setting. In fairness the developer has now reached out twice in the last several days to provide info on the “Bermuda “ issue and to notify me that direct email contact contact to their support service would solicit a faster response. That is a good sign.
Love it

It is wonderful to have this app at my disposal when trying to conduct private business within my work or other open wifi environment. I cannot count the number of times I've used this at work so the 'nannies' cannot track every move I make. It's fast and it's discreet. But most of all, it's free if you don't need to use it all of the time. Even then, it's a bargain and customer service was very prompt and respectful when I had a question. Can't think of a reason to go anywhere else! Stlricky
Seems good except
by Mary and Buddy on 2018/12/02 00:43
While I have it connected in auto, I go to a store and then the vpn disconnects. I got this so it would add some protection while out. So does this mean there was data leakage? If I’m connected in tunnel bear, I want to stay connected until I disable it. So just downloaded update so not sure if this issue has been fixed, but seems like bug, maybe not, just seems that way. Really don’t want data leakage in public place. Whole point of vpn is to protect data. So update does same thing. It does not stay connected so guess data leakage. One unhappy camper.
I love the bear

I was looking for the best Free VPN, because I’m not always connected to a public WIFI, then this bear was in the app store. The bear give 500Mb for free in the start, I invite a friend so we can have 1Gb more in the account, making a total 1.5Gb permanent for the account for me and my friend, if i make tweet every month the give 1Gb for free, making a total of 2.5Gb and that is very very good!!!!!! For me. The bear is here for me for my secure connection i can use the bear for every situation Is the best VPN. i love this bear Rawr. I like if the bear make this 2.5Gb permanent pleases hahaha.

Great VPN that's simple to use
by Hennesda on 2018/06/12 11:30
I've been using Tunnel Bear for over a year and never had any issues. It's simple to use and does what a VPN is supposed to do! I've used several other VPN (paid and free) and the free version of TB works just as well as the paid versions of others. However, the big downside is that if you're looking to do some major streaming you'll have to pay to upgrade because you only get 500mb for free (but can get an extra 1gb if you tweet about them).
Travel Security
by OneNP on 2019/09/02 11:42
I am a traveling nurse practitioner so I’m from hotel to hotel and I never felt comfortable joining the free WiFi at hotels, until now. I use a tablet with a secure VPN for patients to keep their health information and personal identification confidential and now I have the same security for my personal computer. Now utilizing free WiFi is no longer a Worry!!! I finally feel secure that my personal and financial information cannot be obtained during my travels. Thank you Tunnel Bear for my peace of mind!!
Trustworthy works easily reliable
by Quick235 on 2019/04/16 05:28
Tunnel bear is the most recommended VPN by those who are in a position to know. Many “free” and many paid VPN’s are shams and really do not protect you, Tunnel Bear does protect your real location every time. No one can find your real ISP with it , unlike others. Tunnel Bear also protects against “leakage” Many VPN’s leak data that can be used to find you, this app doesn’t. I do a lot of things online that I shouldn’t . I have to have a VPN that is 100% reliable and works
Depends on the device...
by AnnaRaphaella on 2018/12/16 19:06
On my Windows computer this is awesome, I’m in Peru and it provides great protection. It would get a solid 5 out of 5 if this was just talking about computer protection. I wish it would completely hide but I guess I can live with it minimized. On my IPad it gets -1!! It actually doesn’t work on my iPad or iPhone. It starts up, runs and then proceeds to block the internet from use, it asks if a provider can be accepted and then will ONLY accept no for answer. It is sooooo frustrating, I would very much like to use it on my apple devices but it is muy muy no bueno for those. Sorry big bear you let me down when it comes to these devices
Simple mission and philosophy
by SituatedAction on 2017/12/22 22:41
I had worked with their engineering team on issues my phone had staying connected months ago, and nothing was resolved - I was quite sad about that. Knowing the simple philosophy and mission of TunnelBear, I wanted to use it... here I am trying it again and it’s working! A couple days ago I wrote the engineer again and while we’re unsure what caused the change for my device to work with it, I’m just glad it does.
TunnelBear (Seems To Word As Advertised)
by Phyre on 2018/07/28 01:48
TunnelBear is a neat VPN app for iOS that makes using it a breeze (which is ironically part of its problem. With an interface–that I like–that looks like a hipster video game it takes the guesswork out of using it to such a degree I am not always sure it is doing anything). So while I don't want it to become overly wonky, I wouldn't mind if it displayed an IP address (though as imagine you can find the data in the iOS settings) along with the country your signal is seemingly being sent through.
Worst VPN l’ve Ever Used
by Gwags76 on 2018/04/08 21:59
I gave TunnelBear two stars because it is fast- but the connection is very unreliable and drops constantly. Doesn’t matter what you are doing- music, video, games, email, FB- anything the connection drops. Also I have been blocked from numerous web sites because of problems with the TunnelBear assigned IP addresses. Support only allows one issue per hour so if you have have multiple problems you are out of luck. The bottom line is I don’t have time for wonky apps and crappy support. The worst of the four VPNs I have used to date. I deleted the app after a week- 60 bucks down the hole. Don’t make the same mistake I did.
Seems good app.
by Mysubscription on 2017/10/12 05:32
Seems good but not sure if they sell data to the bloggers like lifehackers who uses that data to send update deals on their websites. Though they wrote privacy policies no data sharing but who knows so removing app until they don’t tell in written that no data is given to any blogger or supporter. Mostly bloggers spread words for such services and in return they get users data to update deal etc on their blog pages, not sure if that is anonymous or open sharing but matter of concern of privacy.

by Gnxgbertholl on 2017/11/26 23:24
Incredible app. Just the thought that they would hire an independent consultant to find “holes” in their software and then release the results shows they are serious about the quality of their product. This app also always works for me unlike another highly rated app which would show “VPN” while displaying unprotected when going to their website. My experience has been great. Highly recommend.
Update - Four Stars, Almost Five
by TheNewGuyHere on 2019/07/15 01:47
Four Stars, probably your best choice for a first VPN. This would have been five stars, but TunnelBear is a) now owned by McAffee (since 2018) so may have U.S. corporate legal gaps, and b) both Canada and the U.S. are members of the Five Eyes intelligence community. The TunnelBear privacy policy is excellent, but has the usual escape clauses. TunnelBear is very easy to use. I’ve used it for years in the U.S. and overseas without any problems. Very good, no data leaks that I could find. Sufficiently private for most personal and business needs. Recommended.
Frequent Drops & Frequent Inability to Connect
by Steve Rogers 1978ii on 2018/10/08 14:54
Cancelling my yearly subscription. A year ago, tunnel bear was great & worked well. Gradually, service has deteriorated. Slowing speeds. Frequently drops the connection and won't reconnect without rebooting the wifi or ipad. Lately, periodically refuses to work, requiring deletion & reinstallation of app. Moved to PIA VPN which has none of these problems + the speed is faster + allows me to choose which U.S. location to use and displays location speeds (which tunnelbear never did). My guess is tunnelbear's routing server (that determines which U.S. VPN location you will be at) is spazzing out. Maybe you guys should allow us to choose which U.S. location to run from like PIA does.

by roxannerocket on 2019/11/18 01:55
I purchased a month of Tunnel Bear because I was going on a trip to China.

I just updated to the most recent update and it is still not functioning the same.

by gregory smegory on 2019/11/10 15:35
This app is free and it gives no pressure whatsoever to upgrade and the free version works great!

This does not happen every time, but it is very frustrating.

by drjonnt on 2019/11/08 21:10
has functioned very well. Had recent problem with partial iCloud connection error when connecting through US or Canadian access points, but resolves when I connect through other countries. Seems to be an IP blocking ‘feature’ of Apple servers, not problem of TB. A bit of problem reaching support but when I did, they were prompt to reply.

by An4542111 on 2019/11/06 07:23
The service is smooth when it is turned on, but you have to do it manually and it disconnects frequently without notification.

10/31/19 “It looks like it‘s fixed after the last update: Version 3.2.2”

by Yup exactly on 2019/11/01 12:43
I love having a VPN, but considering it is supposed to provide mild protection with web browsing, the app constantly switches off on its own. On the computer, you can opt to ensure you cannot web browse without the VPN active, but on the phone app, I’m constantly switching the VPN on before I browse because it shuts itself off. There should be an option on the app where your phone doesn’t allow you to browse or get online until the VPN is active.

Always disconnecting
by TJ3009 on 2019/10/31 16:57
I’ve been using TunnelBear for about 3yrs now,But for months I noticed the app always disconnect on its own even when my internet signal is okay. I’ve to connect it manually many times a day, which wasn’t like that before 🤬😡🤬

Version 3.2.2 not working
by SoxFan82 on 2019/10/30 20:50
V 3.2.2 was introduced today to combat the random disconnects / not reconnecting after.

Please fix this issue, it’s a relatively recent one (didn’t happen in the past) but it’s really making me consider switching to a different VPN provider.

by CED6870 on 2019/10/24 02:02
As advertised easy to try no cost version!

Broken
by rocoolboy12345 on 2019/10/23 19:33
The button to activate it doesn’t do anything when I want to turn it off.

I’ve experienced slowdowns of 90%, making the internet unusable. It sure is secure, though, if you can’t use it. The app frequently has no idea where I’m located in the world. I’ll be on the Pacific Ocean and it will think I’m on the East Coast of the U.S.

But if I end-up using cellular service - which I trust - then why bother having VPN service ? ...

Great VPN
by Bobby Ginga on 2019/04/10 23:22
Makes it look like you are somewhere else in the World.
Better all the time!
by Clemfam on 2017/11/20 16:57
Now with auto-connect (among other great features), Tunnel Bear is indeed a very friendly app whose developers and “bears” really seem to care about their product and their customers.
Pretty good
by Aleksey8 on 2019/04/18 00:24
So far I’m using the free version and it works pretty well.
Cool but...
by Champion.#2 on 2019/09/01 23:12
So far I like the app, but there are iOS quirks in my experience.
Love it
by stlricky on 2017/09/25 10:48
It is wonderful to have this app at my disposal when trying to conduct private business within my work or other open wifi environment.
