Futulele - Digital ukulele with FX and chords
Description
Feel the summer breeze with Futulele, the only digital ukulele you'll ever need! It looks amazing (Retina graphics), sounds awesome, offers fully automatic play modes, great interface and even can be extended via the optional Futulele Remote app. Absolutely suitable for ukulele novices, but brings a lot of fun even to experienced ukulele players! This is the ukulele app that can be seen on Apple's advertising materials for iPad & iPad Mini! + Futulele is now UNIVERSAL, with separate versions for iPhone and iPad. + "This is a really brilliant app" - CultOfMac + "It is almost as crazy as it is just plain awesome." - 148Apps + "None can quite compete with Futulele’s impeccable design." - AppAdvice + "It's certainly the slickest ukelele app." - The Verge + "Futulele is a should buy because it’s so well designed" - AppleNApps + Also seen on NBC, Mashable, BoingBoing, Engadget, Gizmodo and many other news sources! Futulele is simply the best-sounding Uke synthesizer in the world. The CrystalClear 4.0 sound engine works with 72 highest-quality ukulele string samples, combining and tweaking them on the fly to deliver fantastic ukulele experience. Futulele detects your strumming speed and alters the sound accordignly. The engine is also capable of detecting the current output mode (speaker/headphones) and making the ukulele instument sound perfect under every occassion. If that was not enough, there are 4 customizable FX: Grand Stereo Reverb, 3-Band EQ, Lush Chorus, Tape Delay. Fully automatic playing is possible, just hold the Automatic button and enjoy the results! There are 15 strumming patterns available, which can be changed in the Options menu. Recording is a blast and takes only one tap. Futulele records to .WAV which can later be converted to .M4A via the built-in File Manager and found in the iTunes File Sharing. Futulele comes with 10 pre-defined ukulele songs, and you can easily create an infinite number of your own. Up to 12 chords can be used per chord set. There are 132 possible chords in total, more than enough for any ukelele song! One of the most remarkable features of this digital Uke is that it can be operated with the iPhone (iPod Touch) and the iPad simultaneously, in a way that has never been introduced before. On the iPhone, you'll need to install Futulele Remote app (available separately). It is not a secret that many iPad owners also have an iPhone, so Futulele is an excellent and innovative reason to get the best musical juices flowing out of both. A special guitar-shaped case holds the two devices, making it possible to select the chord on the iPhone and strum along the iPad screen, just as on a regular ukulele. Changing a chord requires only one tap, and the strumming technique is easy and convenient. No external wires or hardware accessories are needed, since the devices use Bluetooth or Wi-Fi (selected automatically) for communicating. FEATURES (v. 2.3) --------------- + The best-sounding digital ukulele/ukelele synth + Very easy to play! No music background needed! + Universal app for iPhone and iPad + CrystalClear 4.0 Sound Engine with 72 MultiSamples + Strings respond to the speed of strumming! + 2 ukulele sound sets: Classic and Studio + Gorgeous Retina graphics (fully optimized for the new iPad) + 4 Side-Buttons for FingerPicking with Pitch Bend + Automatic Strumming mode with 15 Patterns + 132 Possible ukelele Chords + 15 Pre-Defined Chord Sets + Create you own ukulele chord sets easily + Record to .WAV & .MID, convert to .M4A + 4 FX: Grand Stereo Reverb, 3-Band EQ, Lush Chorus, Tape Delay + Can be extended via separate Futulele Remote app for iPhone/iPod Touch. love the app...only one problem
by Tommyapplesauce on 2020/04/17 14:02
and I don’t know if I’m at fault (will change to 5 stars if this is resolved) but the app is out of tune...using it with garageband with the sMe chord progressions results in just garbled mess...I thought it was just the app (using on my 2018 ipad pro) but when I used the app on my 1st gen Ipad pro, the tuning is perfectly fine and blends well with garageband or with my live instruments or any backing track I play along to on youtube. is there a way to fix the tuning manually? even the app on both devices using the same chord and plucking each strings results in different notes even though the notations say the same name.
App can’t output audio to Bluetooth.
by Mousic on 2017/12/25 03:54
I can’t get this app to output audio to my Bluetooth headset. All other apps output audio to my Bluetooth headset.
This is so awesome
by trtlman on 2017/05/06 05:25
I can't believe how awesome this app is and at only 99 cents. The remote app synced perfectly to the iPad. The sound is amazing, the chords are preset, there are preset songs, this is amazing.
Very playable, needs update
by jhwang on 2016/02/29 01:55
I have played the viola, acoustic guitar, electric guitar and ukulele (electric bass is next). This is very playable for when I am away from my instruments. A way to back up your chord sets, assign auto playing styles and speed per chord set would be nice. In latest version for iOS 9, automatic locks up.
Use With Remote

Posted on May 25, 2012 on version 1.0 - "The Futulele cases should be available soon!" - Okay, is there any update to this post? If the cases are not going to be available, please let us know as I was under the impression that the cases were already available when I downloaded the app. I guess I did not read the fine print. My fault. I do like the app, but it would be great if an update on the case would be provided from time to time. Thank you.
Awesome sound
by Vencabot on 2015/03/22 01:35
I own a lot of synths, and I'm very demanding when it comes to sound. The included ukes all sound great and are highly sensitive to velocity. That along with muting and bendable strings makes this an extremely beautiful and expressive instrument. It really surprised me, and it's one of my favorite apps.
Best Uke I've tried
by C. Russell on 2015/03/16 19:14
Slept not a wink last night due to this app & ukulele chords posted online for a chunk of Radiohead's discography. Slots for 12 chords gives a lot of space, you can fit most of Bungalow Bill into there & entertain the whole family (or collection of dolls, etc.).
Nice to see an update!
by LeeFaulkner on 2015/01/11 04:30
So happy to see someone keeping the Amidio apps alive and kicking. Futulele is easily the best ukulele on the platform and boasts plenty of features and options. For the price it's a no brainer if you want a ukulele that is ! No complaints other than my palm sometimes hits the Preferences button in the top left corner when I'm playing on my iPad, which stops my ... er ... playing. I'd like to lock that, or move the icon. Totally worth the price.
Needs free chirds on iPhone
by CharlesV on 2014/11/28 17:52
Five stars on iPad but three on the new iPhone version - the iPhone is limited to a sequence of chords you can step through. Would love the ability to play chords in any order similar to ipad maybe on a strip.
Broken -- used to be a great app
by Robophonic on 2014/07/05 13:09
This app desperately needs an update. The audio no longer works properly with the latest iOS. Until then, the app is unusable.
Ridiculous.
by Jmm789 on 2014/06/29 20:56
App crashes. I can't even open this thing. On top of that, support site will not let me send support request/ refund request-- asks for "valid email address.". I put in a valid email address. Frustrating and ridiculous for a PAID app. You need to work out all your glitches before taking people's money. I will take this up with Apple Store.
Screws up phone
by Fitzy131378 on 2014/05/22 04:02
The app is very quiet. You can hardly hear it. Then when you go to play any music the volume is low on it as well. Deleted app and volume went back to normal. Awful app.
Good ideas, but dead until updated
by Malfardonay on 2014/05/08 11:08
Way overdue for an update, that restores proper speaker functionality and crashes less often. Right now the app can only utilize the ear speaker. Has some fine features but is useless without a fix. iOS 7, 5/14
Sound only comes out ear speaker
by hoodwinkedfool on 2014/04/19 02:25
I don't know why they would do this, but sound only comes out the ear speaker. The new update makes it "louder" but still only through the ear speaker. Why don't they get this?
No sound
by BiffMcMac on 2014/04/18 21:42
We'll not technically, but the sound comes out of the earpiece... No way to use the speaker. Seriously, who wants to hold their phone up to their ear and try to strum cords?
Sound only plays through ear speaker
by peskypeddler on 2014/03/10 05:30
Latest update must not properly support iOS-7, as the sound no longer comes out the bottom main speaker, but only the iPhone's ear speaker. Makes it quiet and not at all fun anymore! :-( Please correct and update, as I miss my Futulele!
Crash, crash and crash
by Red1969 on 2014/03/07 12:13
Used to be fun but now it won't even work, crashes every time I try to use it.
Crashes >:(
by Frito supreme on 2014/02/11 22:14
I paid $2 for this app and haven't gotten to use it even once because and soon as I open it it crashes. Please fix it!

Good sound, buggy app
by Andy Baird on 2013/08/01 22:09
Let me get the bad news out of the way first: when run on the iPhone, this app is fatally buggy. It uses a clever chord-sequencing scheme--just strum and periodically hit the down arrow to go to the next chord--but programming in the chords is impossible. Among other problems, chords dragged to the timeline pile up on top of each other so you can't even read their labels, or they don't "stick" when dragged there, and before long the app simply freezes and must be force-quit. If you're thinking of running this on your iPhone, forget it. It's unusable. (Tested on iPhone 5/64 GB.) The rest of this review applies to the iPad version, which is marginally usable. I've tried several ukulele apps on my iPad and so far, Futulele is the best of the lot. That's not saying much, though, because the others I've seen are pretty lame. The pros: Futulele has an attractive main screen and produces good sound. It's able to record your performance and export both .wav (digitized audio) and .mid (MIDI) files, which can be imported into GarageBand and combined with other tracks to produce professional-sounding songs. The cons: once you get beyond the main screen into settings, chords and so on, things get ugly fast. The controls are overlaid on the main screen in a semi-translucent fashion, making for a visually distracting mess. The font used is hard to read, and--a particularly serious flaw in a musical instrument--"C" is almost indistinguishable from "G". The recording function works for two takes and then fails--after that, the "Record" button cannot even be actuated. The only cure is to force-quit and relaunch the app. The exported .wav files are fine, but the .mid files, at least in GarageBand, don't sound remotely like what you played, no matter what instrument you assign them to. And as others have pointed out, buttons on the main screen get "stuck" and in some cases replaced by white squares. Futulele is an ambitious effort, and I give the developers credit for what they've accomplished. Unfortunately, they failed to finish the job. This app needs some serious debugging effort, as well as a redesign of the various settings screens. Until then, I can only categorize it as "the best of a bad lot"--still worth buying if you care about the ukulele, but frustrating in use. (Tested on iPad 3/64 GB and iPad Mini/32 GB.)

Looks nice but I could not figure it out. Songs won't play, nothing seems to work except plunking the 4 string either singly or together. I rarely meet an app I can't figure out ...but this one defeated me.
Works great, sounds great
by Lego Damashii on 2013/07/06 01:18
This is a great companion app to OMGuitar. Looks and sounds like a uke', and has lots of strum patterns.

My mom had a ukulele and I loved to play it as a kid. This takes me back to those days. Still haven't figured it all out yet, but who cares I'm having a blast with it anyway. Anyone know how to play Raindrops Keep Falling on my Head? :-)
NoNo

Crashes before it even loads. Deleted.

No problems here. Plays better than other ukulele apps.
More chords
by eisforerika on 2013/06/22 17:34
Wonderful app; however the makers should include the flat chords, as well (e.g. Bb, Ab, etc.)
Works like a champ on my gen 4 iPad!
by Tweakphile on 2013/06/22 16:23
What a hoot this application is! I have seen the other recent reviews that have indicated problems. A suggestion to the developer - regress against a number of platforms/iOS versions. A suggestion to users, look for possible interactions with othe installed apps and report this to the developer. It works very well on mine. I prefer it to the guitar app by the same team.

by AllCarsEatGas on 2013/06/21 22:09

Obviously having issues
by Riredpanda on 2013/06/21 18:45
Downloaded, but some buttons/icons came in as white squares ... And no matter what song is selected, automatic just repeats the same strum. :o)
Latest update increases usability greatly
by Jimhanksnc on 2013/03/08 22:00
The addition of Audiobus and the chunk feature not to mention the MIDI support (which I have not tried yet) have greatly increased the usability of this already really fun app. I'm going to start looking for ways to include Futulele in some of my upcoming projects. The only thing I can think of to make it even better would be truly custom chords, i.e. being able to pick the note for each of the four strings. That or even more chord choices like madd2, m7b5, etc. I'm just dying to play some jazz uke on this thing :-)

iOS 5.1.1 Haven't been able to use it once. Crashes just trying to launch application. Deleted/reinstalled/rebooted several times. Save your $3 if your on same setup as me! Doesn't work!
Brilliant!
by Kuma Wang on 2012/12/17 16:19
Brilliant sound, great UI, easy-to-use and soooooo much fun!! It's the best ukulele app I've had! With or without an iPhone will be the same joy!
Not what reviews are saying
by PersonableParson05 on 2012/10/16 22:45
Saw the advertisements. Now, I realize that for me it doesn't live up to the hype.
Well done and fun
by cmfnyc on 2012/09/06 14:25

Missing left handed mode
by punchbaby on 2012/06/05 18:49
Futulele sounds great. (Is that round robin samples I hear?) There's no sound clipping like in OMGuitar. It plays well on the iPad without the remote. I immediately noticed the omission of a left handed mode. Please add this.
OVERPRICED!!!

SOUNDS LIKE CRAP AND IS NO DIFFERENT THAN ANY OTHER STRING INSTRUMENT APPS
Great app, Even if you have no talent
by Tarbox3 on 2012/06/04 16:14
I have no musical talent, tried to learn guitar years ago couldn't pick it up. I learned the intro to over the rainbow in about 5 min. Don't hesitate get the app so much fun.
Wish it were more like a real ukulele
by nikkiv81 on 2012/06/03 11:02
I've been playing ukulele all my life. This is a cool ap but it lacks one thing--being able to use the remote like a real ukulele fret board. I can't just play a song on on this thing. You have to map out all the chords first. There should be a picking option as well. It doesn't replace a real ukulele.
Pretty good but...
by Oioi u on 2012/06/03 02:42
I wish there was an option to display the chord and options menu accordingly when holding the ipad in the playing position. The way it is now, if the user is strumming and wants to open the chords or options page the menu appears upside down to the user. Please add an option so that the menu can be displayed upside down which would be the correct orientation for the user when they are holding their iPad like they would a real ukulele. I wouldn't change the behavior globally as some people might play this app on their laps.
Even Better with Remote
by Steveb49 on 2012/06/01 23:17

Kinda nice... Where's the remote?
by Greyedeigh on 2012/05/30 18:37
Very responsive and easy to use even if you don't play. Look up chords for whatever song, copy those chords into the grid and you're good to go. I'd like to see an option (maybe it's here already?) to be forced to hold down the chord buttons in order to play them.... More like you'd hold down strings on a fret. That would make it much easier (possible?) to get percussive sounds as well. As far as the remote app, that was one of the reasons I spent money on this, so no 5 stars until it's out.........and God forbid you try to charge us for it! :D
Simply Awesome
by iByron on 2012/05/30 05:51
This is a very well-thought-out app and it works great without the remote app. Can't wait to try it with. Only thing missing is the ability to give it a standard tuning and finger your own chords (making this a practice uke of sorts), but I imagine that can only happen with the remote app. Keep up the good work.
Great so far!

App name

Totally worth the price.

by peskypeddler on 2014/03/10 05:30
Latest update must not properly support iOS-7, as the sound no longer comes out the bottom main speaker, but only the iPhone's ear speaker. Makes it quiet and not at all fun anymore! :-( Please correct and update, as I miss my Futulele!

(Tested on iPad 3/64 GB and iPad Mini/32 GB.)

by Jimhanksnc on 2013/03/08 22:00
The addition of Audiobus and the chunk feature not to mention the MIDI support (which I have not tried yet) have greatly increased the usability of this already really fun app.

Even Better with Remote
by Steveb49 on 2012/06/01 23:17
The sound from this app is amazing, and it's ease of use makes it even better. I just download the remote on my iPhone, and was able to use the remote to change chords! This is the future in musical apps, today.
Really Playable- Great Sounding
by Keywiz on 2012/06/01 02:46
Some simulations are bad. This one is great! My friends at AMIDIO really know how to make excellent sounding apps that are fun and musical to use. They have been in the app business from the beginning and have figured out a lot about making great music apps! Jordan Rudess Wizdom Music
Great so far!
by Foxcek on 2012/05/29 20:13
Looking forward to the remote iPhone app! But so far it's great and easy to use!

by trtlman on 2017/05/06 05:25
I can't believe how awesome this app is and at only 99 cents. The remote app synced perfectly to the iPad. The sound is amazing, the chords are preset, there are preset songs, this is amazing.
App can’t output audio to Bluetooth.
by Mousic on 2017/12/25 03:54
I can’t get this app to output audio to my Bluetooth headset. All other apps output audio to my Bluetooth headset.
Well done and fun
by cmfnyc on 2012/09/06 14:25
This app sounds like the real thing and has all the features you need to transform your iPad into an approximation of the real thing. Well thought out, beautifully designed and full of authentic sound. Worth the purchase.

Thank you.

Heckuvaotta Fun
by CyberHez on 2013/06/24 01:29
My mom had a ukulele and I loved to play it as a kid. This takes me back to those days. Still haven't figured it all out yet, but who cares I'm having a blast with it anyway. Anyone know how to play Raindrops Keep Falling on my Head? :-)
Great app, Even if you have no talent
by Tarbox3 on 2012/06/04 16:14
I have no musical talent, tried to learn guitar years ago couldn't pick it up. I learned the intro to over the rainbow in about 5 min. Don't hesitate get the app so much fun.
Ridiculous.
by Jmm789 on 2014/06/29 20:56
App crashes. I can't even open this thing. On top of that, support site will not let me send support request/ refund request-- asks for "valid email address.". I put in a valid email address. Frustrating and ridiculous for a PAID app. You need to work out all your glitches before taking people's money. I will take this up with Apple Store.
Missing left handed mode
by punchbaby on 2012/06/05 18:49
Futulele sounds great. (Is that round robin samples I hear?) There's no sound clipping like in OMGuitar. It plays well on the iPad without the remote. I immediately noticed the omission of a left handed mode. Please add this.
Needs free chirds on iPhone
by CharlesV on 2014/11/28 17:52
Five stars on iPad but three on the new iPhone version - the iPhone is limited to a sequence of chords you can step through. Would love the ability to play chords in any order similar to ipad maybe on a strip.
Fun app
by Fokaihao10 on 2013/06/22 19:30
No problems here. Plays better than other ukulele apps.

by Mmmmmmmgd on 2012/07/13 07:00
Well okay it's a good app but you should be able to hold the chords at one time it's a good app but I regret buying it for THREE!!!!!? Dollars I mean so expensive for things that doesn't really do what people think it does do. Please fix it please!!!!!!
Brilliant!
by Kuma Wang on 2012/12/17 16:19
Brilliant sound, great UI, easy-to-use and soooooo much fun!! It's the best ukulele app I've had! With or without an iPhone will be the same joy!
Sound only comes out ear speaker
by hoodwinkedfool on 2014/04/19 02:25
I don't know why they would do this, but sound only comes out the ear speaker. The new update makes it "louder" but still only through the ear speaker. Why don't they get this?
Very nice
by trex67 on 2013/06/22 03:22
Good job on this app. Nice sounds, great response, no discernible latency. Highly recommended if you're looking for a new sound.

by AllCarsEatGas on 2013/06/21 22:09
It takes a lot to get five stars out of me. This is adorably fun and sweet, a great app with which to play.
???
by NIghtStar44 on 2013/07/24 19:27
Looks nice but I could not figure it out. Songs won't play, nothing seems to work except plunking the 4 string either singly or together. I rarely meet an app I can't figure out ...but this one defeated me.
Not working on iPad 2
by Daniel Strop on 2013/01/07 04:17
iOS 5.1.1 Haven't been able to use it once. Crashes just trying to launch application. Deleted/reinstalled/rebooted several times. Save your $3 if your on same setup as me! Doesn't work!
Works great, sounds great
by Lego Damashii on 2013/07/06 01:18
This is a great companion app to OMGuitar. Looks and sounds like a uke', and has lots of strum patterns.
Fun app
by swmlvh on 2013/06/25 02:44
Works well on my iPhone5- no issues. Looks & sounds great- lots of fun.
Can't even open the app
by Jean-luc Blanton on 2013/06/22 15:02
I have an iPod 4th gen and as soon as I open the app it crashes It seems like a interesting app, but its pointless if you can't use it Will rate when it actually works
Screws up phone
by Fitzy131378 on 2014/05/22 04:02
The app is very quiet. You can hardly hear it. Then when you go to play any music the volume is low on it as well. Deleted app and volume went back to normal. Awful app.
Broken -- used to be a great app
by Robophonic on 2014/07/05 13:09
This app desperately needs an update. The audio no longer works properly with the latest iOS. Until then, the app is unusable.
Crashes >:(
by Frito supreme on 2014/02/11 22:14
I paid $2 for this app and haven't gotten to use it even once because and soon as I open it it crashes. Please fix it!

by Konanui on 2012/07/22 17:35

No sound
by BiffMcMac on 2014/04/18 21:42
We'll not technically, but the sound comes out of the earpiece... No way to use the speaker. Seriously, who wants to hold their phone up to their ear and try to strum cords?
More chords
by eisforerika on 2013/06/22 17:34
Wonderful app; however the makers should include the flat chords, as well (e.g. Bb, Ab, etc.)
Crash, crash and crash
by Red1969 on 2014/03/07 12:13
Used to be fun but now it won't even work, crashes every time I try to use it.
Obviously having issues
by Riredpanda on 2013/06/21 18:45
Downloaded, but some buttons/icons came in as white squares ... And no matter what song is selected, automatic just repeats the same strum. :o)
ipad version much better than iphone
by Prometei7 on 2013/08/02 11:15
should be only for ipad
