DragonBox Algebra 5+
Description
DragonBox Algebra 5+ - The game that secretly teaches algebra DragonBox Algebra 5+ Is perfect for giving young children a head start in mathematics and algebra. Children as young as five can easily begin to grasp the basic processes involved in solving linear equations without even realising that they are learning. The game is intuitive, engaging and fun, allowing anyone to learn the basics of algebra at his or her own pace. DragonBox Algebra 5+ covers the following algebraic concepts: * Addition * Division * Multiplication Suitable from age five and up, DragonBox Algebra 5+ gives young learners the opportunity to get familiar with the basics of equation solving. DragonBox uses a novel pedagogical method based on discovery and experimentation. Players learn how to solve equations in a playful and colorfull game environment where they are encouraged to experiment and be creative. By manipulating cards and trying to isolate the DragonBox on one side of the game board, the player gradually learns the operations required to isolate X on one side of an equation. Little by little, the cards are replaced with numbers and variables, revealing the addition, division and multiplication operators the player has been learning throughout the game. Playing does not require supervision, although parents can assist them in transferring learned skills into pen and paper equation solving. It is a great game for parents to play with their kids and can even give them an opportunity to freshen up their own math skills. DragonBox was developed by former math teacher Jean-Baptiste Huynh and has been heralded as a perfect example of game-based learning. As a result, it is currently forming the basis of an extensive research project by the Center For Game Science at the University of Washington. Features * 10 progressive chapters (5 learning, 5 training) * 200 puzzles * Learn to solve equations involving addition, subtraction, division and multiplication * Multiple profiles * Dedicated graphics and music for each chapter * supported languages: English, français, norsk, svenska, dansk, español, 한국어, italiano, português, Deutsch, русский, 简体中文, 繁體中文, suomi, Nederlands, Eesti, Euskara, Türkçe, Čeština, Lietuvių, Magyar, 日本語... I cannot stand this app
by LLiissa on 2020/01/08 18:06
The developers promised me a refund months ago so I deleted my bad review, but I never received a refund. Simply, not only is this app quite abstract, difficult to figure out IF you can get it to work, but it rarely works. Sometimes, it demands the you sign in to an account and tells you that you have no students and you just stay stuck there. It is infuriating.
Fun Start
by colorsofbeing on 2019/10/20 03:50
Would be even better with an in game hint tutor to help when you get stuck and also if it showed you how to correctly solve a puzzle when you take too many turns or use an incorrect number of cards to complete a turn. Helpful for intuitively learning basic concepts.
Waste of money
by Paulkruger on 2019/08/28 00:25
Poor instructions Boring as hell. Dont waste your money
VERY STUPID, TEACHES NOTHING, DO NOT BUY
by JoeyNeedles on 2019/06/02 02:11
Teaches nothing but moving stupid images around without an explanation. I am very irritated, and feel extremely ripped off as a parent. I am very disappointed as a parent, that I didn’t see any basis of math in the app, other than minus $5 from my wallet. I will be attempting to get a refund, and will be contacting my credit card if I don’t have any lock with the developer. Do not buy.
Best app ever but...
by inoxspoon on 2018/11/14 18:27
This is a no brainer. If you have kids from 5 to 10, just buy it. I even enjoy playing. But: i can’t save my achievements ! Developers, halllloow ?

Awesome game

Kudos to the developers. ALL of their games are high quality and educational. if you haven’t yet, you owe it to yourself to check out their other games.
Love it!

My daughter with learning differences went through the 5+ algebra game on a Saturday afternoon. When she finished I could write simple algebraic equations which she could solve for me. She was in 4th grade at the time and we were able to use the app to show her school that she could do more than the single digit addition problems they made her repeat over and over. By 5th grade we were able to get her into grade level math and now she is just finishing 7th grade algebra. She started using the older algebra app and the geometry app independently. Can you write an app for calculus next?
5+ game is weak
by mamfu on 2018/05/12 23:05
The 5+ game is weak. It is nothing compared to the original dragon box numbers game doesn’t even have numbers in it so mad I spent 4.99 on this 😒😡.
Algebra for elementary school
by Calvin Deserato on 2018/03/14 11:36
Turns out that Asian countries teach algebra in elementary school. Dragon Box was a great intro to a challenging subject. My 10 year-old just finished the game. Now looking for Dragon Box geometry and Dragon Box trigonometry.
Good App-not able to find help.
by Brunch1892 on 2018/01/22 20:40
Can’t get any help. Stuck on a level and now can’t do anything.
Charged me more
by McLean mom on 2018/01/05 23:37
This game says its 4.99 but I was charged 7.98. Such fraud. Do not purchase!
Useless for teaching algebra
by mancjew on 2017/11/18 00:02
My kids just tries things blindly to solve the problems, I don’t think they are learning to think deeper than just this mechanical action of cancelling elements out and add things to both sides. There’s no explanation of fractions. From watching my kids play this app, I can’t see how they are learning algebra. It also does not teach any problem solving and application of algebra.

Great app and want more!!!!
:/
by A_Fangirl on 2017/07/04 00:13
Jut got this because a friend of mine is a math teacher and told me it was the best. I'm on level 11 and already stuck. It keeps saying I have a wrong card too close to the box but that's where it keeps telling me to put the card and won't let me do anything else. There is also no help button to click on so I'm just stuck.
Gamification at its best!!!
by Robertogue on 2017/03/29 23:15
This is an awesome way to learn by playing. I really wish more apps like this existed. It starts out with very basic concepts, and before you know it, you're doing some hardcore stuff. I cant recommend it enough.
Will not even open

IOS is up to date and this will not even open on the iPad.
Really teaches algebra
by Bk b lol on 2017/02/08 23:28
Great app. Worth every penny. Teaches the concepts in a fun way using pictures instead of numbers at first. In fact, after my 7 yr old finished this, I purchased the bundle with Algebra 12+ and Geometry. I don't buy many apps, but would gladly consider any app that this company produces.
AWESOME GAME

Best game ever. (Period)
Taught all my kids this way.
by Zycie on 2016/11/27 03:57
I really like this app. I used it to teach all my kids the basics of algebra. Even my niece wanted to play it on my phone. Great way to get kids started in algebra without the stress.
Love This Math App
by Simplebot on 2016/10/16 06:41
My 5 and 12-year old boys really like this app. Now I do too! When my husband first introduced it to me, I hated it. Got every problem wrong. But when I restarted from the BEGINNING rather than somewhere in the middle, I learned the rules and techniques of the app and began solving the equations. What a fun way to learn algebra!
No more crying over math!
by Nutsonewfs on 2016/09/17 18:00
I am 50 years old and for at least 46 of those years I thought I couldn't do math. Kind people told me nobody is good at everything. Unkind people told me I was undisciplined and stupid. Dragon Box is the first time ever, I understood that the point of algebra is something other than torture. I had FUN playing the games. Who knew you could do math and not cry?
My 4 year old loves algebra
by Waverly Albright on 2016/08/18 16:44
I bought the bundle of four dragon box apps this summer, and I told my 4 year old son that we could start Algebra 5+ after he finished Numbers (which was fantastic too). We have been playing 5+ for about a week now, and he loves it. He asks everyone who visits to "play algebra" with him, but at this point he doesn't really need the help. When we play together I just ask him "where should we start?" and he takes it from there, saying things like "should we simplify this fraction first?" or "f over f equals one whole, so these cards are unnecessary." Wow. Highly recommended for adults too who might, like me, need a reminder of how algebra works before teaching their 4 year old.
Pure genius!
by Chloe.mato on 2016/06/28 01:35
Pure genius, enough said!!!!!
I NEVER write reviews, but I HAD to for this app!!
by Came2000 on 2016/06/26 02:48
I'm an elementary school teacher of over 20 years and I'm always looking for educational games for my boys. My SIX year old devoured this game in about 3 days! By the last level he was solving multi-step algebraic equations mostly on his own! I'm blown away. I will have him use the app from time to time so the concepts can be reinforced, but believe me when I say that I won't be forcing him. He was completely engaged the entire time. I had to tell him time was up a few times and to put the iPad away! I will definitely be recommending this game to my students and their parents. I will look for more "games" from this developer. If they are as good as this one, I will get them all.
Fun subtle learning
by Timmommack on 2016/06/05 20:23
Got me looking forward to future math homework. My five year old is excited about algebra, now that's cool.
My 5 y.o loves DragonBox!
by BLM & CGM on 2016/04/23 03:04
My son started the dragon box apps at 4y.o….enjoying “elements" and up to the middle level Algebra 5+ problems. Only later did we get “numbers”, which is a piece-o-cake now for him. I await anything that this group produced because I have also enjoyed doing ALL of the problems - I wish this was around when I was starting algebra!
Хорошая игра

"Прикольные монстрики" - вот так комментирует игру ребенок. Очень полезно и самое главное интересно. Спасибо авторам
Eh.
by Momma Trains on 2016/04/10 02:36
Love the idea. But the first time we tried it, 5 year old found all the avatars too scary and wouldn't go further. Then he got through a few levels and got bored. A good one if you *make* your kids do educational apps but not one where kids will choose it for fun and accidentally learn math concepts.
WELL DONE!
by Purple Moon 23654 on 2016/03/15 14:08
Our 7 year old loves this app - "very motivating" she says. Love the graphics and well worth the money! No advertising or in app purchases (thankfully!!!!). Awesome app!!!!

The ads are true
by Bradzepfan on 2015/12/16 15:13
I taught my child algebraic operations long before the expected grade level. The biggest problem facing parents and students is motivation. To gameify this was a brilliant move. Well worth the money and far more…
Love it
by DelwynJr on 2015/12/07 06:06
Very unique and creative way to get your kids mind thinking mathematically!
This is how we should be teaching algebra!
by SCollinsworth on 2015/11/14 02:07
I always hated math in school, and after playing this through to see what it was about I found that it even improved the way I see algebra! Introduced it to my 5 year old and he plays it all the time. He gets the concepts it is teaching, and the rewards of the evolving creature keep him wanting to finish the next level, and the next, etc. We'll done WeWantToKnow AS, well done.
No sound :(
by Mag hunter on 2015/10/14 02:40
Purchased this app as part of the bundle. The sound doesn't work on any of the 3 apps. My kids don't like it without the sound. No help from customer service.
Thank you
by No language guy on 2015/08/26 05:00
This app is amazing! My 4 and 5 year olds loves it! As I parent I can see right away how the algebra concepts are being taught in a game like environment. I never rate apps but this one I feel compelled to say something. I rarely upgrade to the paid apps but this one I had to! It would have been incomprehensible for me not too. My kids love it that much and are learning at the same time. Kids can really learn way more than we give them credit for. We just have to know how to teach it. This app knows how to teach it! To the makers of this app I say - GOOD JOB AND THANK YOU!

Fun,thoughtful,educational
by Scotru on 2015/07/05 02:26
Excellent way for young children to learn basic algebraic principles and start to develop an intuitive feel for math. I teach college math and my 3-year old loves this.
Phenomenal!

My six-year-old has just about mastered this. I can hardly believe it!
Brilliant app!
by MultiageTeacher on 2015/05/19 01:05
This is such a fantastic way to introduce algebra to kids on the graphically symbolic level they can comprehend! I bought this for my iPad, projected it up on the Smartboard, and EVERY kid was engaged as we took turns working our way through the first level. I had kids “playing this game” at recess on a sunny day — THAT’S how much they liked it! Fantastic job, WeWantToKnow! I will gladly spread the word on your app!
Interesting and challenging
by SanFranmama on 2015/05/13 21:47
Best math app ever made!
Level 3-20 unsolvable?
by Alishanmer on 2015/05/01 21:11
a/5 + x = -c Obviously the solution is x= -a/5 -c However, I don't see any way to subtract a/5 at this stage of the game so it's impossible to clear the equation. Unless I am totally confused. Please fix or at least tell me the solution. But as for reviewing the app, I think DragonBox is the best thing I've ever seen for learning Algebra. I tested it by solving every problem on DragonBox 12+. I like the slower progression on DragonBox 5+, it helps even older learners who have difficulty solving the problems in DragonBox 12+.
Wonderful app that teaches algebra when you're not looking
by Microlitigator on 2015/04/25 21:08
The app uses adorable little growing monsters to teach the relationships between numbers and variables in algebra. My five year old loves it and do do I!
One of the best math apps for kids
by CortneyMSM on 2015/03/09 09:59
Both my 6- and 9-year-old boys love this app. The increases in difficulty are paced perfectly.

On to Dragon Box 2!
1 hr of play
by Siobbie on 2015/01/23 03:43
I bought this for my 5 year old. He loves it but completed the first three levels in about an hour. Level 4 and 5 do not open. There is no update and i'm out $5+. Plus i have an upset child who thinks he did something wrong because the levels aren't opening. Most expensive app i've bought for only an hour of play time. Not worth it.
Amazingly simple!
by Castelluzzo99 on 2014/12/30 05:20
I just downloaded this app less than two hours ago, put the kids to bed, and completed all 5 levels. I loved algebra and all that, but for someone who doesn't get it, this app makes it so easy! I can't wait to show it to my 8-year-old tomorrow. I plan on having her redo levels until she gets all 3 check marks. If she plays it enough, I'm sure she'll get it. She will like the fact that there is no time pressure (something that make some math games stressful for her). And it is so visual! Totally worth more than $5 if it helps her learn basic algebra in second grade!
No instructions
by nckitkat on 2014/12/23 20:49
For someone used to some type of instructions, I was frustrated after a few level, didn't know what it was trying to get you to do. I bought it for my 5year old grandchildren, but I think they would quit playing immediately- not what I thought it would be.
Math-tactic!!!!
by Mama of 4! on 2014/11/30 15:30
This is a MUST HAVE app! Very ingenious! Especially for Visual Learners!!! Get it! You won't be sorry!!!
Fantastic app, well worth price
by Ian Corcovado on 2014/11/28 00:29
My 8-y/o daughter has used this app for over two years. It has given her both familiarity with algebra concepts and a fearless ability to engage each problem. She's almost finished the bonus questions and we'll soon move on to DragonBox 12+ four years ahead of schedule.
So innovative
by gnfrank on 2014/11/02 12:11
One of the best educational apps I have seen. Teaches the standard algorithms of algebraic solving using non-numerical characters and fun, rules based moves. My 9 year old and even his 5 year old brother understood it - and loved it.
Sneaky awesome app

Just wish for more levels. So awesome.
Love it!
by 123taskman321 on 2014/09/14 02:51
My 6 year old and I both love this game. I wish I could have played it when I was a kid, I may have actually enjoyed algebra!
Fun and educational
by DrMommomG on 2014/09/10 01:46
I played before my son got ahold of this, so that I knew how to help. He loved it, and even got through all of chapter 1 in the first night (he just turned six and is starting K). He wanted to start chapter 2, but bedtime was near.
Super fun!
by Hkrywind on 2014/09/06 13:05
I can't believe how fun this game is for me and my 4-year-old daughter! We play every morning before school. She's balancing equations (at chapter 5 with only letter and numbers) and loving it!
Pretty Good, Needs Adjustment
by Dan62103 on 2014/09/01 13:46
My algebra skills are weak and I wanted to see if it would be a fun way to introduce my 7 year old to the concepts. It was, but as another reviewer mentioned, it could use a brief explanation at the end or beginning of each major stage as to how the concept is analogous to algebra because I don't think the connections are clear enough to carry over. Also, I didn't know about the 12+ version of the app at the time of purchase which includes everything I paid for plus more. There should be a mechanism where I can purchase that one at a discount if I own the first instead of paying redundantly. Otherwise I think this has the makings of a good way to learn. ** dragon box 12+ discounted as of 8/30/14. Purchased, thanks guys.
I'm the parent and even I like to play
by Sonia jay on 2014/08/31 17:28
At first, I thought the game was pretty basic. But as the levels progressed I started seeing the math concepts. Soon I was watching my 4-5 year old child do fractions, multiplying, recognizing positives and negatives. It's a great introduction to math. And the child doesn't even realize he is being educated. It's just a fun game to them.
Nice educational app
by RS razor on 2014/08/30 17:24
Tricky on getting beyond 1st level though. Overall a good purchase. Recommended.
Great insight
by peterx on 2014/08/26 22:01
I was fooled by the simplicity of this game. I was hooked right away until I completed it. If my kid completes it, I think it will give him a good insight on real algebra. I wish it had many more levels and more repetition until completely mastering each technique. Repetition is the real base to do algebra effortlessly.
Late in life learning
by VeniceBeacher on 2014/08/24 19:26
I was having a chat with my 7 year old neighbor (a little math whiz) and told him I had always been really poor at algebra. He insisted that I play Dragon Box and now we do it together. Hopefully you will come up with other games for us both?
Boys loved it
by YellowRose747382 on 2014/08/23 13:44
My 7 year old had so much fun, he showed me how he did each level. He raced to stay a few levels ahead of his 9 yr old brother. Great game. Fun way to learn these concepts.
One of the best math games I have seen
by DK Smetters on 2014/08/14 15:09
I got this for my kids (7 and 9) after hearing about it from another parent. They wouldn’t stop playing it, and were clearly picking up a good chunk of algebra in the process.
Makes Algebra Fun
by Jen Russon on 2014/08/09 17:49
This makes learning algebraic concepts into a game. Unlike most math games for kids, the math part isn't just loosely tacked on as an interruption to game play or a chore to get a reward. Brilliant!
Review
by Kalibk on 2014/07/29 18:44
This is an excellent app in terms of the pace of introducing complexity and then experimenting with each new concept that has been introduced, the best learning app that I have seen.
Seriously
by Fifth time trying on 2014/07/26 13:06
There is a bug that renders this app useless after 3 minutes of playtime. The 'game' looks promising, but the testing team must've fallen asleep on the job. To pay $6 and be unable to progress past level 3 due to a bug is frustrating -and inexcusable. I've bought 100+ apps and never experienced something close to this. Please fix it!!!
Great (secretly) educational app
by JAMES H BANKSTON on 2014/07/24 03:28
My 7 year old was captivated. After he had played it for a total of couple of hours, he was doing algebra I was doing in 8th grade. My 4 year old loved it, too.
Best algebra basics app out there!
by Nick Anonymous on 2014/07/15 15:10
Your child thinks he is playing the next great puzzle app. But really he is learning algebra. The game mechanics and graphics are an incredibly creative way of explaining math concepts in a way that makes sense to younger children. As the game gets nearer to the end levels, the abstract creatures have morphed into more standard algebra terms like numbers and variables in a way that does not scare off those who are apprehensive about math.
Brilliant!
by illium on 2014/06/11 21:11
In an hour with this delightfully clever game, my 5-year-old learned basic algebra and fraction manipulation, without even realizing the importance of the skills he’s just mastered. This is exactly the kind of creative twist on presenting important concepts I’d love to see more of. I can’t wait for the quantum mechanics version. :-) Absolutely recommended!
Love it
by Mommy to jag on 2014/06/01 03:33
I bought this is morning and my boys don't want to stop playing! They love it.
Stellar use of gamification as a power for good.
by Neenerjen on 2014/05/18 18:38
I can't recommend this app more highly. It's fun, deeply satisfying, easy and actually teaches real principles of algebra. But there are a few things that made me hesitate in confusion. For example, when the game transitions from using "boxes" to using "x", there was no explicit statement that they were the same. Instead, the game uses a subtle halo of stars to indicate what you're trying to get "alone." At least it was subtle to me. It may be very obvious to a kid. But that's just being picky. I found this game to be addictive and I suspect most kids would too.

My sister referred this app to me for my 7 year old daughter. My daughter loves it, but thankfully this app lets there be more than one user, because I enjoyed refreshing my own algebra skills, all while conquering this game and bonus levels. On to the 12+ version, soon! It is worth every penny!
Just amazing!

Where was this app when I was teaching pre-algebra?!? My 7 year old just rocked it.
My 7 year old struggles in math but can do this one!
by Momofpreschooler on 2014/03/28 23:03
This app is seriously amazing - what an incredibly unique way to teach a very complicated system. My 7 year old struggles in math at school but has not only picked up on this algebra easily but is completely addicted to it!!!
Genius
by jspickler on 2014/03/27 03:52
This app is equally entertaining for my 4.5-year old, my 9-year old and me. Never thought of algebra as a fun puzzle, but here you have it! This app is fantastic.
Fantastic and fun!
by Keith WH on 2014/03/15 04:56
My nine-year old and I loved working our way through the five levels! Near the end, she had a "Eureka!" moment and exclaimed "Hey! This is just isolating a variable! I just had a lesson on this in (Montessori) school!" That alone was worth the $6 :) I would like to be able to have the option of keeping the animal/day-night cards for longer. She tended to freak out a bit when the cards switched to "number/letter" cards.
Excellent

I bought this app on a lark, as my son was only 6 at the time. Turns out, I loved playing it as much as he did, and have recently purchased the 12+ version for myself. What a great way to learn or take a painless refresher course in Algebra. Highly recommended.

I was watching my four year old go through the puzzles for the third or fourth time. I actually found myself thinking, "it is so easy, what can he be learning?" Then I remembered "oh yeah, he is four years old and he is doing high school algebra."
Awesome

What an amazing way to teach students early algebra and fraction sense! As a teacher and mom who uses technology as a learning tool, this game is a definite "must have" and worth the money.
Don't even realize you're doing math

This a great way to teach or practice balancing equations. My 9 year old son and I both love this app.
Love it!
by imafatshark on 2014/02/15 20:22
I work with math learners with a huge range of skills and learning differences. Dragon Box has made a huge impact, it makes learning math concepts fun! It abstracts away from the black-and-white pushing numbers around on a page and makes concepts tangible. In a word: AWESOME.
Nice!
by Mazaraø on 2014/02/12 21:24
The kids love this. Need to add upgrade with more levels ;-)
Awesome
by Inventor44 on 2014/02/10 08:23
My 7 year old has mastered this “game.” Algebra IS a fun game, gradually the symbols turn to numbers and he is doing algebra before he is even fully proficient with arithmetic. Makes you realize that math is a very diverse enterprise and can be a great game. I like it too, I’d like to do Dragon Box puzzles rather than all the Sudoku I play.
Amazing!
by Snuffy's dad on 2014/02/04 04:47
My 4.5 year old devoured this "game" and loves to do algebra...disguised as a puzzle game. Amazing how they cleverly establish the "rules" of the puzzles and subtlety replace icons with numbers and letters. A MUST-have for all parents! He tore through all levels in one day, then 2 days later reset and re-ran all levels. On the plane, he opened it again. The best part is the progressive "growth" of the little monsters that grow as you solve more puzzles...genius!!
8 year old mastered basic algebra in 1day

Can't say enough about how well this worked and how much fun it was to play. Get this app.
great game
by Parent Dan on 2014/01/20 23:54
6 year old son really liked it, wanted to finish it all and did. Want more levels to practice with, even if it's just more of the same of the last chapter. Would be willing to pay for more chapters.
Beware
by Sabreena 5964 on 2013/12/30 23:13
Do NOT buy this app. I just spent 6 dollars (the most I've ever spent on an app) and finished the whole thing in half an hour with my 9 year old. Instead of adding more levels as an update, they rip you off by creating a SEPARATE app with more levels worth $10 (which repeats all the levels in this app too by the way). So basically, I am wondering why I didn't buy the $10 app in the first place. At least that has a decent number of levels and lasts 4 hours. This one has too little content for the price.
To few levels
by Daniel Scanlon on 2013/12/22 02:35
This app is great. My nine year old loved it and wants more. He ran through all levels in two days. Way to quick to go through $6. My seven year old is half way through in two days. More levels please. Please sir, may we have some more. I fear spending $10 on the next app.
Awesome

Love this app!
by Smithfam8 on 2013/11/27 01:54
This app was fantastic for my 11year old autistic son. He is great doing mental math but has trouble on paper. This was a fabulous way to introduce algebra skills. He swore it wasn't math for the first two chapters. Will definitely buy the next level. Wish this one had a few more chapters for practice.
Fun and brilliantly devised
by CowabungaDad on 2013/11/26 22:42
A wonderful app that teaches in a very subtle way until you realize that you're actually doing algebra! I love the concept and the game play is fun and teaches step by step. The best math app I've seen so far (we've tried about fifteen of them!)
Awesome!!!!
by TheMaskedReviewet on 2013/11/25 03:49
Perhaps the best piece of educational software I've ever seen. I would love to see more levels but that does not detract from the sheer awesomeness of the product. They should create versions for all math through calculus.
The BEST game I have ever seen

Great tool to teach kids math! It is a little slow at first, but maybe that's because I'm a Mathlete! I would like to have seen more math problems, and I wish they would list the practical steps or "Math Laws" being taught.
Best app ever but...
by inoxspoon on 2018/11/14 18:27
This is a no brainer. If you have kids from 5 to 10, just buy it. I even enjoy playing. But: i can’t save my achievements ! Developers, halllloow ?

No more crying over math!
by Nutsonewfs on 2016/09/17 18:00
I am 50 years old and for at least 46 of those years I thought I couldn't do math. Kind people told me nobody is good at everything. Unkind people told me I was undisciplined and stupid. Dragon Box is the first time ever, I understood that the point of algebra is something other than torture. I had FUN playing the games. Who knew you could do math and not cry?
Love This Math App
by Simplebot on 2016/10/16 06:41
My 5 and 12-year old boys really like this app. Now I do too! When my husband first introduced it to me, I hated it. Got every problem wrong. But when I restarted from the BEGINNING rather than somewhere in the middle, I learned the rules and techniques of the app and began solving the equations. What a fun way to learn algebra!
Gamification at its best!!!
by Robertogue on 2017/03/29 23:15
This is an awesome way to learn by playing. I really wish more apps like this existed. It starts out with very basic concepts, and before you know it, you're doing some hardcore stuff. I cant recommend it enough.
Fun Start
by colorsofbeing on 2019/10/20 03:50
Would be even better with an in game hint tutor to help when you get stuck and also if it showed you how to correctly solve a puzzle when you take too many turns or use an incorrect number of cards to complete a turn. Helpful for intuitively learning basic concepts.
Taught all my kids this way.
by Zycie on 2016/11/27 03:57
I really like this app. I used it to teach all my kids the basics of algebra. Even my niece wanted to play it on my phone. Great way to get kids started in algebra without the stress.
Do not buy.
Awesome game

Jut got this because a friend of mine is a math teacher and told me it was the best. I'm on level 11 and already stuck. It keeps saying I have a wrong card too close to the box but that's where it keeps telling me to put the card and won't let me do anything else. There is also no help button to click on so I'm just stuck.
Algebra for elementary school

Amazing and effective.
by GrregP on 2012/12/01 02:40
Like some reviewers have said, it's not a huge amount of material. But I think what you're paying for here is quality over quantity. If your pre-algebra youngster finished it rather quickly it may not mean there's not enough material, rather it may mean that it was highly effective and whether she realizes it or not she now has a grasp of some advanced concepts. At least intuitively. As a math teacher pointed out in one review, it is limited in scope. However I would regard it as focused rather than limited. I failed out of many years of algebra and it was precisely this kind of equation solving that stymied me. Imagine my surprise 35 years later to find myself able to simplify/solve these equations. One key element to the way this works is the way it initially removes actual numbers from the picture. That circumvented my usual blocks and taught me the principals without getting hung up on "NUMBERS". I admit I stumbled briefly when the app introduced numbers, but the adjustment in my perception won out and I was able to continue and finish the lesson. There is obviously far more to algebra than this, but this would make an outstanding teaching tool in the context of a class, perhaps especially for those struggling with equations. I would love to see more apps from these folks focusing on other areas of math with the same outside the box approach. (Oh yeah, and it is fun and addicting!) Overall I think it's price is justified.
Would be perfect with a minor tweak
by Splertytoo on 2013/04/04 05:06
This app is amazing, I particularly love that it's called "dragon box" instead of something like "learn algebra". The concepts start out abstract with pictures in boxes (abstract only to what us adults know algebra to be, but very intuitive and fun for kids that have no idea what algebra is) and slowly progresses to what we would recognize as basic algebra equations, very clever! My children had fun progressing through the levels and only realized about halfway through that they were actually doing math (moot point by then, they were having such a good time it did not matter that it was educational). Love it! One very minor tweak would make it perfection: the multiplication dot is ambiguously placed such that it can easily be confused for a decimal (not a good thing to confuse the kids with) and a problem worth correcting. As is, any adult or older child could (and should) explain the reasons behind the equations and clarify that the dot is a multiplication symbol and not a decimal. It's not dry, boring, or very age specific, like many educational games. It's fun for children and adults which makes it much more like a game and much less like an educational tool. All learning should happen this way.
Loving it!
by heatheroni on 2012/09/08 19:17
My 8 yr. and I love playing/solving this game together! I have played it with younger kids of friends and they love it too! Of course I like to participate and help slip in some light terminology and stay excited, upbeat, and cheerleadery to positively reinforce the game, getting excited with the kid every time our monsters evolve and grow bigger. I have worked in a preschool setting with challenging kids and the next time I do I will look to playing this in that setting with them. I always tell people who get turned off of math that it just takes the right approach and point to how we all in 1st and 2nd grade when learning our addition and subtraction would do work sheets like 1+_=3 and when we fill in "2" we were doing algebra! Just use x or box instead of _! This game takes that thought and leads kids down the simple easy path to having fun while doing that very same thing. Buy it. It's worth it. I am happy I did.
EXCELLENT TEACHER👍
by Lost in Tactics on 2012/06/15 11:06
Please don't listen to that guy (throrn whatever his name is) below me, saying this app is only worth a dollar. He obviously must have never searched for a algebra teaching format in the app store - so he would not understand "quality" and most importantly "beneficial" uses of such an app and how it can impact your life by elevating your mathematical grammar. He also, must not know what support brings to such a game of quality = more great games from the developer. If successful, probably other disciplines will become available down the road (chemistry, biology, etc..) This is truly an amazing way to learn algebra. I do not know the slightest bit about algebra. However, via this platform... I am learning at a great pace. Bravo to the developer for creating such an app. Five stars all the way! *BUGS* There are certain times in the game where you cannot proceed further after you have competed the level. (The developer is aware if this - see disclaimer on game page) all I do when this happens is manually proceed to the next level by tapping on the orange "up" arrow at the upper left corner of the screen. Good Job Developers. Please make a card battling game like this. (like Magic: Duels of the Planeswalkers - but with math)
Great for refresher!
by westrock2000 on 2012/12/03 22:04
30 years old and looking to go back to college. I didn't pay attention the first time and was terrible at reducing equations. This app made it very easy to understand the "game". I would say its borderline expensive for what it does, but I think it's one of, if not the, best at what it does, so it can justify the premium. The first part of app is the "card" based game. Once you beat the five worlds, there is a bonus section that's unlocked that is essentially the same thing but now it's actual algebra with numbers instead of cute pictures. So it's cool that it eases you in with the pictures and them lets you do actual equations using the same methodology. 5 Stars. Now make a missile commander for geometry and something else for calculus so I can ace them all!
8-Year Old High-Functioning Autistic Learning Algebra
by Anonymous Rank & File Consumer on 2013/07/07 14:23
Our son is now 8, and is on the high-functioning end of the spectrum. He does not enjoy mathematics, but he likes his iPad games, and he likes this game. The game roped him in, and within hours of getting it, he was about 40-50 levels in, averaging two stars per level. The only thing that bothers me about the game is that the rationale for working on both sides of the equation isn't very compelling. In other words, when you add a quantity to one side, other than the fact that the game compels you to add the same quantity to the other side, it's not clear why it's important. The game developers are obviously clever, so I hope they can continue to refine the game, adding levels, making it more engaging and addictive.
Turns out, I'm awesome at Algebra!
by Mollylorra1ne on 2013/01/28 06:03
I had considered buying this app for awhile, but as soon as I saw the numbers I'd get dizzy and pass. Today, my 7 year old wanted an app to practice math and this looked fun to him. Long story short, my 7 y.o. can play, my 5 y.o. can play (a little) and I am playing awesome, even with numbers! I guess I've learned in a day what semesters of bone-head high school algebra classes couldn't teach me. I just passed World 3 and feel like I could do basic algebra! Great confidence builder! Great app! I wish they had it when I was 15. So excited to give my kids a head start in basic skills! Must get app for anyone who didn't "get" algebra in school or anyone who will someday take algebra (hopefully from better teachers than I had). Recommended!
My math teacher mom always said math is really a puzzle!
by Optional Name on 2012/07/26 16:51
My mom is right and Dragon Box makes it fun and easy for all ages to discover for themselves the rules of algebra! I am so amazed at how quickly my 6 yr old son moved through the levels. He said Dragon Box is definitely his favorite game on the iPad! I sent a short video of him completing one of the higher levels and all of our extended family was just astounded, saying, "how did he know how to do that?" The best part is that Dragon Box is motivating in and of itself, so he just wanted to keep going and going! I am happy to let him play it because I know he is learning valuable skills and increasing his own confidence. We got the "+" version so he had more levels to solve. This is worth the money!
Why was the iPad made?
by Kalani Thielen on 2012/06/17 14:23
This game is why. It's given my six year-old a great new perspective on math and me a parenting experience worth more than just a few bucks! I'm a little choked up just writing this, it was so wonderful to see. This game is a beautiful introduction to algebra. It is cleverly disguised as a game, and as you progress, the form of the problems gradually changes from a colorful illustrated card game to syntactically familiar equations. While watching my son play, I also experienced another kind of gradually-refined realization. This process of focusing on discrete objectives with scores for each level is exactly what schools approximate, though with more judgement, politicization, and tedium. I hope that professional educators learn a lesson from games like this, as I have.
Beautiful, fun, subtle
by YanFaLi on 2012/06/15 05:51
I'm pretty awful at algebra, and have tried on multiple occasions to learn. As I went through the app I understood I was playing a game, and also being taught the basics of algebra. The cute symbols gradually get replaced with math as you play and while your conscious brain may not understand what exactly you are learning, the repeated practice hammers the skills into you because you want to improve your score. I can only imagine how beneficial this could be to a younger mind. My 3 year old may be too young for this right now, but I'm excited by the possibilities this opens up. Even for me. Ran great on iPad 2012. Never crashed once. Actually wish it had even more levels. I finished both sets in an evening.
Fabulous App!
by Intelligent Parent on 2013/07/19 09:18
If only I had been presented algebra this way as a child! I love the artwork, the step-by-step progression and how the algebraic concepts are separated from the math to really focus on one thing at a time. The concepts of multiplication and division are taught here without the child needing to compute them. I love the emphasis on the identity properties of addition and multiplication, as well as reducing to one. The graphics are truly gorgeous! I only wish there were more so my children could play with new problem sets every day. This app really accomplishes what so many do not - avoiding the trap of just putting worksheets into electronic format. The developers here really take advantage of the technology to do something new. Congratulations!
Fantastic
by kkarin on 2013/04/21 15:32
I was delighted with this app when I first tried it and am delighted still. I have an 8 and 10 year old and they both tackled it with interest. They got stuck a couple of times, but since I did it too, I just explained the concept and they got it and moved on with no problem. I love that they develop the conceptual thinking behind algebra. I would love another game that could take them through to a more advanced level. Unlike other reviewers, I was really happy with the number of levels especially with the bonus levels. I would just like to use the techniques of this game to go further. Perhaps you could sell an add on or just design a separate game.
Best. Math. App. EVER. Brilliant, fun, and so so SO CLEAR!!
by Booktiger93 on 2012/11/17 22:44
I bought this today and my 4yo daughter ripped through all of chapter 1 (20 games) and half of chapter 2 (another 10) in about an hour — and the only reason she stopped is that we insisted on breaking for naptime! The app brilliantly conveys the rules of algebraic solving without confusion and without kids even needing to understand the concepts of multiplication and division very well; in fact, I'd argue that the mental block that some kids have at the very mention of the word "fraction" means that kids with NO math experience are the ones ideally suited for this app. I couldn't help it -- I solved all 300 "games" myself, as soon as she went to sleep (and I could get custody of my iPad back)...and it was WAY fun! I cannot recommend this highly enough. I can't wait to show it to my 5th grader, who will no doubt eat it up, as well. What GREAT conceptual thinking by the designers! I can only hope they create more apps for kids with the same kind of clear, easy, fun approach. It's nothing short of revolutionary.
Priced way too high, needs more levels
by The pet human on 2013/07/06 03:24
I downloaded the this version based on the Forbes article about it. One of which is that playing for an hour or more per day for several months greatly improves their algebra skills. I question the claims of the article simply bc there is no way you can play this for more than a couple days if your kid plays it for an hour at a time. It took about 2-3 hours to conquer the app for my 9 year old. Then you have to pay another 9.99 to buy the advanced app. It's a neat idea, but way too expensive for an kid app that dead ends after a few hours of play. I won't be buying the 9.99 app at that price. That's a very expensive app for how little time it's playable. And no, my 9 yr old is not my gifted one, just an average kid.
Makes algebra intuitive
by shazrolane on 2013/03/02 15:28
I'm an adult with a master's degree who has always found algebra difficult and frustrating. Calc and trig are fun, I do geometrical proofs for fun, but algebra has always been my downfall. Classes, independent practice, even private tutors haven't completely solved my problems. After only two chapters, I'm already figuring out how this works! It's fun and I find myself redoing levels just to get a perfect score. That's how I'm learning how to best solve the problems. Wish I had this when I was studying for the GRE. As a bonus, my toddler likes playing the lower levels, and I'm using it in my classroom to help some of my high school students.
Good, but...
by Mom22gr8kids on 2013/07/01 19:41
This game does a great job of teaching algebraic concepts in a game format. However, there is not much guidance or help. You have to jump in and figure it out (not always bad). Some of us algebra-challenged folk would also appreciate some help when we get stuck and just don't know how to proceed. At the completion of a problem, the game lets you know how many moves you should have finished in and if you didn't end with the right number of cards, but if you did something wrong there's no explanation of how it should have been completed. Maybe there's a help menu somewhere, but I haven't found it! I felt this was a bit pricey considering the above-mentioned limitations. Probably won't be buying the next level app., especially at $10.
Awesome idea!!!
by cpaztecs81 on 2013/03/03 01:15
I am amazed by how effectively this game was designed. I have had it only a few days but I love the fact that my 7-yr old is going through all the levels and being introduced subtly to concepts that she will use in the future. Algebra is the basis for theoretical math and my kids are being exposed to rules that I have seen many adults have trouble grasping. I believe this app justifies all the money we spend on these smart mobile devices. If you are interested in getting your kids ready for Algebra, get this app for them. it is amazingly effective. It is well worth the price and I highly recommend it.
Awesome!
by Suwi21 on 2013/01/29 21:53
I really like this app. My 12 yr old is almost finished with it and she saw the underlying math it was representing. My 9 year old is cruising through it as a puzzle game, as is my 5 year old. I hope to see new levels soon, as there are some further manipulations I would love to see. But completely worth the money for kids. (I went through it myself, although pretty quickly myself) I actually bought two copies, one for my oldest and one for my account. I really want to see more educational games like this! I have always thought math was fun, particularly algebra and this game shows why!
Amazing App

I'm actually quite amazed with this app. I bought it on recommendation of a friend and educator. I decided to play it myself to see what it was all about. At first, I thought "How in the world is this going to teach algebra?" But as I continued to play, the genius of the app was slowly revealed. I gave this to my 7-year-old 2nd grader to see if he would like it, and he loves it. He's currently on chapter 4 of 5 and his understanding of algebraic concepts is improving every time he plays. Again, I'm very impressed! There are some high school students who would benefit from this kind of teaching. It's like hooked on phonics for algebra.
Old Dog, New Trick

I'm 53 years old and the first time father of 5yo twins. Math was never my strong suit, let alone algebra. I've been living in fear of having to help my kids with their math homework. Not anymore. I bought Dragon Box intending to give my kids a leg up (and avoid my having to help them understand algebra). I started "playing" the app and couldn't stop. 3 stars on every level including the bonus round. Now I'm feeling like a total dork for not grade-school grokking what is essentially good old fashioned fun puzzle solving. Terrific app. Brilliant presentation. Thanks for the courage to face my kids math books. :-)
Amazing
by Weez333333 on 2013/09/17 01:33
Absolutely amazing. My 5 year old daughter loves it, and actually understands the concepts involved with solving equations (isolating variables, canceling out constants, simplifying fractions, multiplying by 1, adding zero, etc.) I am a high school math teacher, and an IT leader for my school, and I have already filled out a work order to get this app on our classroom sets of iPads. Many high school students have difficulties solving equations, and this app will definitely help them. Now, I'm just waiting for my daughter to finish the game and the bonus levels, so I can get her the next app DragonBox (12+)
Mathtastic!
by Brimarie9 on 2013/09/13 18:20
My 7yo loves this app and even asks to play it. He's had it for a couple days and has made it through all he levels in 2 worlds. It progresses from "characters" to actual symbols that they will see in when doing algebraic equations. You do have to pay attention because the app does not make them do concepts repeatedly until they can do them every time. My only criticism is that once it explains something it does not go back to explain it again if you have to restart the level but this is minor. Well worth the money.

Kudos to the developers. ALL of their games are high quality and educational. if you haven’t yet, you owe it to yourself to check out their other games.
Love it!
by Is'tOnlyMe on 2018/06/12 23:56
My daughter with learning differences went through the 5+ algebra game on a Saturday afternoon.

Can’t get any help. Stuck on a level and now can’t do anything.
Charged me more
by McLean mom on 2018/01/05 23:37

Eh.
by Momma Trains on 2016/04/10 02:36
Love the idea.
Awesome app!!!!

by Bradzepfan on 2015/12/16 15:13
I taught my child algebraic operations long before the expected grade level.

Love it

How good is this game?

Great App!

My sister referred this app to me for my 7 year old daughter. My daughter loves it, but thankfully this app lets there be more than one user, because I enjoyed refreshing my own algebra skills, all while conquering this game and bonus levels. On to the 12+ version, soon! It is worth every penny!
Just amazing!
by JoeAustin on 2014/03/29 22:44
Where was this app when I was teaching pre-algebra?!?
Excellent
by Frustratedmom599 on 2014/03/06 09:00
I bought this app on a lark, as my son was only 6 at the time.

Awesome
by Enrichment8888 on 2014/02/28 16:22
What an amazing way to teach students early algebra and fraction sense! As a teacher and mom who uses technology as a learning tool, this game is a definite "must have" and worth the money.

I work with math learners with a huge range of skills and learning differences. Dragon Box has made a huge impact, it makes learning math concepts fun! It abstracts away from the black-and-white pushing numbers around on a page and makes concepts tangible. In a word: AWESOME.

A wonderful app that teaches in a very subtle way until you realize that you're actually doing algebra! I love the concept and the game play is fun and teaches step by step. The best math app I've seen so far (we've tried about fifteen of them!)
Awesome!!!!

Perhaps the best piece of educational software I've ever seen. I would love to see more levels but that does not detract from the sheer awesomeness of the product. They should create versions for all math through calculus.

No more crying over math!

My 5 and 12-year old boys really like this app. Now I do too! When my husband first introduced it to me, I hated it. Got every problem wrong. But when I restarted from the BEGINNING rather than somewhere in the middle, I learned the rules and techniques of the app and began solving the equations. What a fun way to learn algebra!
Gamification at its best!!!
by Robertogue on 2017/03/29 23:15

by colorsofbeing on 2019/10/20 03:50
Would be even better with an in game hint tutor to help when you get stuck and also if it showed you how to correctly solve a puzzle when you take too many turns or use an incorrect number of cards to complete a turn.
Do not buy.

Awesome!

Amazingly simple!

Stellar use of gamification as a power for good.

Amazing

Absolutely amazing. My 5 year old daughter loves it, and actually understands the concepts involved with solving equations (isolating variables, canceling out constants, simplifying fractions, multiplying by 1, adding zero, etc.) I am a high school math teacher, and an IT leader for my school, and I have already filled out a work order to get this app on our classroom sets of iPads. Many high school students have difficulties solving equations, and this app will definitely help them. Now, I'm just waiting for my daughter to finish the game and the bonus levels, so I can get her the next app DragonBox (12+)
Mathtastic!
