Description
onion browser is the original free and open-source Tor-powered web browser for iOS. onion browser helps you access the internet with more safety and privacy, and no extra cost to you. “The best Tor-related offering on iOS right now is onion browser” - The Daily Dot, October 14, 2015. Featured in: The New York Times, The Guardian, Salon, TechCrunch, Gizmodo, Boing Boing, Lifehacker, Macworld, The Daily Dot, & others. FEATURES: • Browse the internet over Tor: - Protect your privacy from website tracking - Secure your traffic from insecure wireless networks and ISPs - Support for HTTPS Everywhere, an automatic switch to HTTPS enabled websites - Access .onion sites that are only accessible over Tor. • Fight online tracking: block scripts and automatically clear cookies and tabs, based on your preferences. • And more privacy-enhancing features! DISCLAIMERS: - Web browsing is much slower than through a normal web browser or a VPN because your traffic is encrypted and relayed through the Tor network. - Multimedia often bypass Tor and compromise your privacy; video files and video streams are blocked by default and are not supported by onion browser. - onion browser might not work on networks with advanced network restrictions. If the app does not connect, try using bridges (or a different type of bridge), force-quit, and then restart the app. - Use of onion browser is at your own risk; remember that sensitive data does not always belong on a mobile device. ** onion browser is free and open-source software. You can read more about onion browser and how to support development of Tor on iOS by visiting onionbrowser.com **

The only officially supported tor browser on iOS
by Ron_Paul_2012_for_President on 2019/09/20 01:22
This is the only tor browser on iOS that is recommended by the official TOR project. It’s open source, it doesn’t try to bundle sell you VPN with tor, it’s just tor and it just works.

Only Usable Tor for iOS
by Vinnie413 on 2019/09/03 07:06
I downloaded probably ten different Tor apps, and this is the only one that consistently could reach .onion links without some generic error about the webpage not working. I tried the same link in every app, and this app is the winner. Only reason its not getting 5 stars is that if the page being loaded is too big, the entire browser just crashes. A bit disappointing, and I hope this is fixed.

Appears genuine; be aware of iOS limitations
by A7 73 C9 on 2019/08/24 13:20
As far as I can research, this appears to be a genuine open source port of a tor-tunneled browser to iOS. There exists an article on Ars Technica, but more importantly, Onion Browser is linked as a recommendation on the Tor Project download page, as an alternative for iOS users. I suspect the reason it has not been fully adopted by the Tor Project, as an official Tor Browser Bundle, is due to certain unavoidable issues with iOS causing IP address leakage - the Onion Browser website currently lists an issue with iOS’ handling of OCSP, and WebRTC, both potentially leaking data outside of the Tor connexion. Perhaps we will have an alternative when iCEPA (Tor on iOS via VPN API) is completed. As far as more easily solvable problems go, I think it is worth mentioning that the default User Agent does not match that of the Firefox ESR branch as done by TBB; perhaps that is intentional, to reduce the fingerprinting uniqueness of a WebKit browser masquerading as a Gecko one, but I think this should have been explained to the user in the setting description. Also, the Global Settings option for “Privacy - open in Settings app” does nothing, merely switching to Settings, without opening a specific preference panel/pane.

HORRIBLE BAD APPLICATION! DO NOT DOWNLOAD UNLESS THIS BUG IS FIXED!
2.2.1 Update Better
by Barbatus Unum on 2019/08/21 00:26
2.2.1 fixed the nasty UI toolbar problems in 2.2.0. Could finally put the toolbar back up top again without it being a mess overlaying the iOS status bar. Thanks! Web site loading speed seems improved too (keeping in mind TOR is a lot slower by design - this is normal in order to protect your privacy). But the initial connecting to TOR at launch seems noticeably longer most times than with previous versions. Still needs several key features from my prior review: Needs the ability to lock/unlock the browser screen with the Home button fingerprint reader like DuckDuckGo’s iOS browser does. Blurring the backgrounded snapshot is very good, but anyone can tap it and immediately see the web page you were reading. (Yes, there are plenty of iOS users who still have devices with and actually use the physical Home button. So let’s put it to best use here.) Also needs the feature to auto-select or rotate to a different TOR connection if the TOR connection route in use is very slow. (TOR browsers or network connectors on Windows & Android can do this already.) Even better to make it selectable by country like Orbot does on Android, and show you the country/server nodes in your connection path — so you can avoid going through certain countries. Needs a much larger “X” button to close individual tabs — current one is far too tiny on iPad -- often miss it and have to try multiple tap attempts. The audio-video IP address leaking issues are still a major problem (disabling it doesn’t help if that’s what you need this browser to access in the first place), but that sounds to be a limitation of iOS overall with no solution available yet. Here’s hoping someone figures it out soon (including Apple). Overall, this browser update works better than prior versions, but needs more development to be on par with other PC/mobile TOR browsers. Seems like it’s getting there, and I appreciate it’s free. Looking forward to more timely updates with more improvements please!

Browse Wi-Fi without the router watching!
by WindowToaster on 2019/07/28 20:04
On Wi-Fi routers, the person who owns the Wi-Fi can look at a log of which websites have been visited. Not here! On Onion, it ends at the first forward slash. This is great when I want to web-search something cringy without anyone knowing. I recommend this app to anyone who is worried about being laughed at by the Wi-Fi owner because they like to play <game everyone else thinks is boring>, they want to learn about <seriously, that would have been useful information a hundred years ago> or they can't spell <sight word> right!
Search engine not working after latest update
by Disc0 bliss on 2019/07/16 23:46
The DuckDuckGo engine does not work after the latest June 2019 update. Any search term put in to the engine elicits a “forbidden” blank page. Why isn’t the developer addressing this? When I search for anything using this TOR browser, every search gives me a page with the word “forbidden “. There is no way around it. APP needs renamed to Forbidden-Time Out
by reviewreviewrrview name on 2019/06/22 10:31
Because that’s all that happens. Search on DuckDuckGo, takes me to a “forbidden” page. Doesn’t matter what I search, I am forbidden. Copy-paste a link to address bar, hit go... sits for 3-4 minutes with an 8th of a load bar, then I get a “timed out” error. TL;DR- This app is broken, literally does nothing but burns through battery charge.

Best Tor browser for IOS
by TheLivingMan on 2019/04/30 15:42
I have used this browser in the past and it never met my expectations. I switched over to Or Net and lately I have been having issues with the latter, so I decided to switch back and give this another try and it is the best decision I’ve made. It’s the fastest tor browser I’ve used, faster than my laptop and it’s so simple and user friendly. I suggest you always use a bridge when browsing on the Tor and you should have no issues. I don’t easily trust my fellow men but this but after doing my research on this developer I can say his works prove him to be a trustworthy man who stands with and for the people. He’s not out to make profit. Thank you sir and peace be with you!

Captcha thing goes through 17 iterations of traffic lights, stairs, a bus, crosswalks, and motorcycles before it finally lets me into the profoundly slowly-loading site, and then each page advance wants more Capthcha trys. Just establish that I’m not a robot BEFORE I GET ONTO ONION, and then send a randomized “not-robot” identifier to any subsequent websites visited. This won’t compromise any security protocols and will drastically reduce the bad reviews... I was trying to buy melon seeds...
IP address leak - use with care
by TheRealElbadoo on 2019/04/22 12:05
Caution: IP address leak on iOS 12.2 with Javascript turned on even if WebRTC is disabled. This is mentioned on the Onion Browser “home” page as an issue on iOS 12.2 and 11.x. Take heed if this is important to you. Yes, it’s possible (probably preferable) to run with Javascript completely disabled by enabling Strict content policy to avoid this problem, but then no website images are displayed. What’s up with that? To demonstrate the IP address leakage, set WebRTC to No and Content Policy to No XHR/etc. Go to browserleaks.com and hit the “IP Address” (lower-case ‘i’ in a circle) link. Does your IP address show in the WebRTC Leak Test ”Public IP Address” field? Note that the actual WebRTC Leak Test page on the site (eighth icon down) does not show an exposed IP address with the same settings.

Best iOS alternative
by Msbarnes87 on 2019/01/15 07:32
Onion Browser has been the best Tor Browser alternative for iOS. From what I have seen, it behaves the same way that the PC Tor Browser does, offering many of the same features, security and anonymity. Of the many Tor browsers for iOS I have tried, Onion Browser tales the cake. Knowing that The Tor Project endorses Onion Browser is a huge step forward for Tor use on iOS and mobile platforms I general. Until The Tor Project is able to develop and release the real Tor Browser for iOS and mobile, Onion Browser certainly does the trick. These days, in an extremely mobile world, Tor on mobile is much more important than Tor on a computer, and I believe that most people believe the same. Literally the only issue I have with this browser, is the fact that if the app spends longer than a few seconds in the background, it will lose its connection to the Tor Network, forcing us to force quit the app and re-launch it. I understand the limitations and the technical stuff with iOS, and that is the reason for this, but if there were a workaround that could be implemented, that would be fantastic. Because of the app losing its Tor connection, and requiring a force quit to reconnect, it causes me to lose anything and everything I am doing online, which is a real set back. Other than that, it is the best Tor Browser I have used.

So this app is amazing and I love it but there’s just one measly thing I have a question about. I’ve downloaded this on my iPhone and it works great, no issues whatsoever except that there is no option to turn JavaScript off. Apparently turning JavaScript off adds to the protection part of the app except that there is no such option anywhere. I’ve checked the settings on the app and my iPhone but still nothing. Not sure if there truly is one but I’d like for that to be an option if possible. Please and thanks! Update: I just found where JavaScript blocking was after extensive searching. DIN'T UPDATE! [VPN + TOR]
by Scootch Tastic! on 2018/02/14 08:42
When I first downloaded this app, it was free and didn't have any in-app purchases. Then slowly features were being modified and then they added in-app purchases. Needless to say: I DID NOT UPDATE this app. If you still have the version with the Compass Star [looking] icon, then stick with that and use a VPN. Red Browser is a free app (now - I originally paid for it - silly me), and so is OpenDoor (donate to remove ads), and both underwent some changes as well. If the app icon gets updated to look flashier, it typically coincides with justifying vague "minor bug fixes," and attempts to charge you money for an app built using Open Source and breaks the app! Not cool… Save yourself the headache and never let your iOS device do automatic updates ever, and if [the app] it ain't broke, then don't fix it! For the final time, I will also recommend using a VPN with TOR. Avast (old version prior to the one with new icon - geez, must be a spooky trend), SecureLine (SecureMe if you're broke and can't shell out the 1yr-iOS only plan), is a great app and working in tandem with Onion Routing is your safest bet! note: 2 nodes often exposed!

So maybe it’s just me but there is no loading bar or anything to let you know web page is loading or not. It’s just blank for a while. Second I don’t see an option for tabs or even a settings icon. It’s just blank on top right. Also back arrow is not always there. It does work swiping or hitting screen where back arrow sometimes is. This is on iphone 7 newest os

Much more responsive than the previous OB and the tabbed browsing is great!!! Other reviewers state that they can’t connect to certain websites or any web sites at all.....none of those problems here. I’ve been able to connect everywhere I’ve browsed (although HTTPS Everywhere does limit some unencrypted links, which is what it’s supposed to do). I have had to switch my bridge a couple of times, but that par for the course these days. MT, this is a big step in the right direction for OB on iOS. Keep up the good work. I do have one suggestion : Make it possible to change your identity IP with a button.....like The Tor Browser (if it’s possible on iOS)

Thank you sir and peace be with you!
iPhone and JavaScript
by PixelBlair on 2018/04/27 16:00
So this app is amazing and I love it but there’s just one measly thing I have a question about. Apologies for before. This app is worth the 5 stars

BEST FOR IOS thus far
by JACLYN HEALY on 2019/04/06 23:10
I agree with the previous review 100%. Behaves exactly like tor on pc. And that tor endorses this app to be the best so far for online... privacy. (for the LIFE of me I can’t remember how to spell that word right now ... what is it.... annonomitity? .....no..... annynomitity? ... Nope... wrong again... ananomitity???? .... I give up!) I’m just writing this review so the developer gets the credit he deserves! Whoever rated this app anything less, doesn’t understand tor. It’s a big step forward in the fight for online..... PRIVACY. And SOMEBODY had to make the first move. Those who complain do not have the willpower, motivation or knowledge to do it so be thankful people. Thanks Mike! I appreciate your hard work!
Great update 👍
by jansoucek on 2018/01/22 07:30
Thank you for keeping the app updated. The 2.0 update looks great, but here are some things which I think could be improved: 1) The dark mode has quite low contrast ratio. It might be hard to read for some people. 2) There is no longer an option to reset the connection if something goes wrong. If programmatically force-quitting the app (like in v1.0) is no longer accepted by Apple, include a guide for the users. Or just implement re-connection in-app without the need to re-launch. 3) Can’t see a typing cursor in DuckDuckGo search bar, which makes editing queries quite a challenge 4) No Reddit page would load for me. It always ends on the “something went wrong” page. These are all minor quirks. Thanks again for working on the app!
Awesome for IOS, but frequently crashes. 💀
by try_restarting_it on 2019/04/26 14:32
Glad after wading through the dozens of fake tor apps with pricy subscriptions that I found the original. It’s pretty good, but a slight problem with the app is the times when it just flat out crashes out of the blue. I still like it, but please fix that in the future!
Finally a tor browser that works
by beam_follower on 2019/05/15 20:25
Having tried a couple of tor based browsers, I see that this app is fast , smooth and reliable. One of other tor browser apps used to crash randomly. Another one used to have hard time connecting to tor network. This has none of those weaknesses.

I am NOT a robot!!!
by YaSahiibi on 2019/04/25 18:34
Captcha thing goes through 17 iterations of traffic lights, stairs, a bus, crosswalks, and motorcycles before it finally lets me into the profoundly slowly-loading site, and then each page advance wants more Capthcha trys. Just establish that I’m not a robot BEFORE I GET ONTO ONION, and then send a randomized “not-robot” identifier to any subsequent websites visited. This won’t compromise any security protocols and will drastically reduce the bad reviews... I was trying to buy melon seeds...
Battery killer
by josevnz on 2019/01/03 09:33
This application managed to kill my battery phone in a few hours, even without using it. I noticed than the browsing got very slow and then my battery utilization went from 95% to %7 for two days in a row. Something is left running on the background even after you kill the app, I had to shutdown the phone and uninstall to restore my battery usage back to normal. Please avoid until this is solved.

Seriously Lacking Usability
by B33R4NG on 2017/11/24 16:16
The application has a ton of cons but one pro that brought the review to two stars; it connects to Tor exceptionally fast and is verifiably connected to the Tor bridge. However, that’s the only thing good within this browser because it is completely unable to be used as a browser as webpages are unable to load. Almost all webpages. Needs more options and a stable browser build because this thing is embarrassing. How do you release a browser that can’t even browse? Web pages fail to load. It’s quick, but it’s quick to arrive at NOTHING!

Search engine not working after latest update
by Disc0 bliss on 2019/07/16 23:46
The DuckDuckGo engine does not work after the latest June 2019 update. Any search term put in to the engine elicits a “forbidden” blank page. Why isn’t the developer addressing this? I see numerous complaints of this problem. Operating on iOS 12.1.4 Have used this app for at least 2 years prior to this

by 2847dnfufbc on 2019/06/27 13:56

Description
onion browser is the original free and open-source Tor-powered web browser for iOS. onion browser helps you access the internet with more safety and privacy, and no extra cost to you. You can read more about onion browser and how to support development of Tor on iOS by visiting onionbrowser.com **

by A7 73 C9 on 2019/08/24 13:20
As far as I can research, this appears to be a genuine open source port of a tor-tunneled browser to iOS.

Smooth !

Thanks for the upgrade, the app is much better to use...standard browser from now on :)
Initially, I was learning more than I imagined I was able to absorb!
by @DreadIron on 2018/02/05 01:32
Okay a delete and reinstall repaired functional it’s, sorry Onion it’s a noble app by application. And, execution. Educational x10 too. Now, It fails on open << ever time since 11.5.2 >> if this is going to be a common theme at the AppStore then I trust there is going to be a Great Wave to come crashing in P/E as in recent days but the size is going to be tsunami and final. Not necessarily your fault their Onion but an ignorance in business is just going to go the way it was imagined we have tort law and consumer protection and agencies to govern these and more than likely as in checkers there’ll be some jumping to Senate as opposed to judiciary digital media and the like laws updated and refined reflecting the standards for trade and brand new ones it’s not a dark day, it’s a a shining moment of truth coming to some and some won’t survive the day. Tough.
Thank you sir and peace be with you!
iPhone and JavaScript
by PixelBlair on 2018/04/27 16:00
So this app is amazing and I love it but there’s just one measly thing I have a question about. Apologies for before. This app is worth the 5 stars
Love the Update!!!

Unable to connect since update!!
by Best way to kill time ever! on 2019/04/14 17:01
Was able to connect one time right after the update, long enough to see the warnings for iOS 12.2. However, I have not been able to connect for days now — times out every time. I did not update to 12.2.
Latest update.
by Juttin3 on 2018/01/24 02:47
So maybe it’s just me but there is no loading bar or anything to let you know web page is loading or not. It’s just blank for a while. Second I don’t see an option for tabs or even a settings icon. It’s just blank on top right. Also back arrow is not always there. It does work swiping or hitting screen where back arrow sometimes is. This is on iphone 7 newest os
2nd Update, Updated Review
by Dropper234 on 2019/06/23 15:13
We can now see images without JAVASCRIPT! Thanks Mike! So far with the IP checks, running VPN’s, running WEB RTC checks I can’t find too many issues, only unique identifiers, but we are mobile app, not TOR browser. Thanks for the hard work Mike and updating the App!
More privacy?
by word nerd 1 on 2018/02/07 14:17
It would be really great to have optional passcode protection so that casual snooping (through bookmarks, for example) would be discouraged. Along the same lines, please hide the contents when the app is in the background. Bookmark bug has been fixed in the new release. Thanks!
Can’t find any details.
by Travel and product researcher on 2018/12/08 06:50
I downloaded this and then got a charge for the ”Baby Onion.” Now I see no details on what upgrades are available anymore if any. Could you please show me the prior payment set up for the different upgrades? Since they're no longer here. And if in fact there is a better version?
Underrated
by Redbull fanatic on 2018/04/02 06:57
This app is awesome, and the fact that it functions so well and is still bashed on is sad. Aside from occasional crashes which may not even be related to the app it works awesome. Wish there was an official Onion App but this one still works awesome. Props to the creator!
Java script blocking option on iPhone app

by obmoderatesuse on 2018/04/13 00:14
There is no functionality yet which allows exporting media files, such as.... pdf’s ? I appreciate being able to surf .onion’s I hear that we are still identified behind our TOR routing 👻
Excellent update.
by Bbbbbbbbbbbbbbbnmbbj on 2018/01/30 02:52
After the most recent update the app has been much easier to use. It definitely feels more streamlined. Most importantly I have not had this app crash on me ONE TIME since the update!
Everything is forbidden
by Havata Ins on 2019/07/14 14:47
When I search for anything using this TOR browser, every search gives me a page with the word “forbidden “. There is no way around it. Before this most recent update, it seemed to work well, with the exception of trying to watch videos. They would never load. Until these problems are fixed, I will be looking for a better browser.
DuckDuckGo forbidden search results
by Dishappointed on 2019/09/06 11:50
When searching in DuckDuckGo I am able to get to the DuckDuckGo Onion site but when I execute a search, any search, I get a page with one word on it, “forbidden.” I’m using iOS, latest version. Any suggestions?
The only officially supported tor browser on iOS
by Ron_Paul_2012_for_President on 2019/09/20 01:22
This is the only tor browser on iOS that is recommended by the official TOR project. It’s open source, it doesn’t try to bundle sell you VPN with tor, it’s just tor and it just works.
Does it keep logs?
by VPN: The private Birdnick on 2018/03/30 20:35
Sorry if this is a stupid question but does it keep logs? And does onion browser really leak ip address even if onion browser user is behind vpn? By way great update. I really love it. Also in my opinion this onion browser appear to be slightly faster.
Latest update breaking sites & 11” iPad Probs
by Eggroll88 on 2019/04/06 20:15
Yay for the update. However browser doesn’t display properly on 11 inch iPad and for some sites to work the browser needs to be completely opened up which could be problematic. Captcha probs too.
TOR page no longer connects. Can’t connect to TOR
by Tn jsg on 2018/02/06 01:48
Last update won’t allow me to connect to the TOR network. Always had no issues. No neither my iPhone nor iPad will connect on latest iOS update.
A step backwards
by Could have liked the app... on 2018/02/15 09:07
The new version of the browser originally added several new features that were great, including adding the menu choice to open a clicked link in a new window. For some reason, a number of these new features were removed in the latest update. Why?
Love it
by Nikp90 on 2019/03/26 02:38
Well designed, works great for me - i like having the option to have windows close on screen lock, or when the app is suspended
Works well!
by Maui Kid on 2018/10/30 18:09
Fast and looks nice except the cute animal intro. If you want to present the app in a professional manner at least make it look professional. Needs an app lock option to be 5 Stars.
Please bring back open in new tab option

Search engine not working after latest update
by Disc0 bliss on 2019/07/16 23:46
The DuckDuckGo engine does not work after the latest June 2019 update. Any search term put in to the engine elicits a “forbidden” blank page. Why isn’t the developer addressing this? I see numerous complaints of this problem. Operating on iOS 12.1.4 Have used this app for at least 2 years prior to this
Great but still need some improvement
by Unlucky God on 2018/12/29 17:14
App works great. In my opinion, dev can even make it better by adding “Open in new tab” option like in Safari.

Suggestion to tracking/ad blocking

Maybe you could include a content blocker for Safari component in Onion. Maybe have a separate list for that in app?

Can't Access 1/2 the Sites I'd Like To
by ComedicHistorian on 2017/08/18 08:50
Couldn't get on Alphabay or Hansa (irrelevant now but it was annoying), can't get on to Dream either. I imagine it does a fine job of keeping me anonymous but if the sites on which I'd like to be anonymous aren't accessible then what's the point...?
How to reload a page via new circuit?
by 512KB — 32GB on 2019/04/16 21:19
* Please add the ability to add Onion Service v3 authentication keys. * On macOS I click “New circuit for this site” until a stupid site that blocks Tor finally doesn’t. How can I do this with Onion Browser? I dislike being denied being able to read for the mere fact I don’t want to be spied on.
Issues
by 2847dnfufbc on 2019/06/27 13:56
Regardless of what I search for through DuckDuckGo, the result says “forbidden”. Also, sites that used to load after I typed in their url, no longer load completely. I don’t know if this was an update problem or what but now the browser is pretty much useless.
DO NOT DOWNLOAD UNTIL FIX!
by Sebasivx on 2019/08/22 06:21
Everything I search on DuckDuckGo immediately says “forbidden” then I use another search engine and it says “unusual high traffic, checking to see if I’m not a robot” but it doesn’t check anything it just stays there and doesn’t allow me to navigate the web! HORRIBLE BAD APPLICATION! DO NOT DOWNLOAD UNLESS THIS BUG IS FIXED!
Not connecting
by Selfdestruct264 on 2019/07/29 02:47
I used to have no issues connecting to the network. It takes around 30-60 seconds. Now I wait over e minutes and eventually things time out. I have tried on our Xfinity WiFi and on Verizon Cellular on my iPad Pro. No dice. If I can get connected I’ll update this review.
Thanks for making this free

Works for me. Too many scammy, expensive subscription Tor apps in the App Store. Not this one. Thanks!
