The onkyo Remote Control App is an official onkyo application for iPhone/iPod touch letting you intuitively operate onkyo network A/V products. Got it to connect but as soon as I make a change or play music it shuts off… I would not buy another Onyko. Any app developer who has half a brain could get this to work… Shows they don't have what it takes to keep up with technology

App works overall but it does not remember my settings. When I back out of the app and go back in it's as if I never changed a setting. Other than that it's great for me.

After updating my receiver hardware, making sure the latest firmware is installed, giving the receiver a static IP, hard-wiring it to the network, I've decided Onkyo just makes a terrible network-connected receiver and/or app. Most of the time the app can't locate the receiver. It seems it has to be unplugged and plugged back in to come back. If this is poor app programming or poor firmware / status monitoring on the receiver side I don't know.

I'm happy to announce that this app is a money saver since my Onkyo remote volume control stop working now I have full control via my iPhone and other than that my home theater system functions well true this app highly recommend not sure what happened to the person with the negative review.

One of the reason I upgraded my receiver was to be able to control it wih an app via wifi. I tried and tried to get this to work. Uninstalled the app, reinstalled it, meesed with my networks settings, firewall...etc. No go. Waste of time and I wish I could send back my Onkyo receiver.

Just got my patio sound installed and the app seemed to be a really good solution to control my music from outdoor;... Well it turned out to be useless because keeps crashing every time I open. I have re-installed the app around 7 times with the same outcome, even reset my phone and still the same... Very frustrating! Onkyo team, if you care about your customers, the do something!!!!! And BTW the remote 3 app is even worse than the version 2; spotify menu has no options.... Really bad. I am thinking on returning the receiver just because of this app.

Onkyo Product Managers...this is the worst App I've ever used, keeps crashing, shutting down, causing my brand new receiver to freeze up. I've tried restarting my iPhone 6, reinstalling the App, unplugging the receiver and plugging it back in. How can you put out a technology product like this??? Also, even when the App is not crashing, you can't make any adjustments to any of the speakers other than the very basic Trebble/Bass/Center. If I'm watching a movie, I have disrupt the movie to get into the OSD just to turn up one of the Surround Speakers. I'm boxing up my Onkyo TX-NR636 right now and it's going back to Best Buy just out of principle!!!

App used to work now crashes immediately after choosing net on zone 2. Have to walk upstairs to listen to my receiver downstairs. I have a 609 receiver that was broken and onkyo fixed it, now this. Asking Santa for a marantz or Sonos. I have tried to be loyal but done with onkyo.

New Review: Broken. Won't run. Sad. Old Review: I have casually played with this app and wasn't blown away until about 4 months in. Controlling pandora on the Onkyo 717 from my phone is a game changer. Yes the app is a bit buggy and could stand for a little stability help but I now love this app.

Update: still no fixes from Onkyo. Don't buy this receiver. If they can't write a decent app then at least they should publish APIs. Bought receiver because I could control via iPad or phone. Looks like I'll have to try a third party. Can't keep up longer than 30seconds. That's pretty bad Onkyo.

Same issue as others have experienced. App use to work just fine. Now it doesn't recognize receiver and I can't control net features like Spotify. Major pain. Being able to control music from backyard was one of the best features of my Onkyo receiver. Can no longer do this since app isn't communicating with receiver. Onkyo needs to fix this!

Worked briefly for my NR-636 and then stopped recognizing the receiver. Tried resetting the router and turning off bluetooth on the iPad and iPhones but it still didn't function. Disappointing that they do not seem attentive to the quality of their app.

This app is horrible. The only reason we upgraded our receiver was so we would be able to use this app to control it while we were downstairs so we wouldnt have to run upstairs every time we wanted to control music, volume,etc. The app can never locate our receiver, and is very hard to navigate the few times it does work. I dont want to have to unplug my wifi, ethernet, receiver cables every time we want to use our sound system.

It no longer operates my TX-NR609. It sees the device, but doesn't actually control it. Fix this please! Update 10/3/14: Worked briefly with my new iPhone 6 and iOS 8, but now back to being broken again. Very sad. I'll never buy Onkyo again given the problems I've had with this thing. This app just piles on the problems. Update 10/19/14: Now working off and on (iPhone 6 iOS 8), but crashes frequently. Assuming this is due to iOS 8 incompatibility.

Why doesn't this come iPad ready? I don't know why I would want to use an iPhone app on an iPod. Seeing that right out of the gate makes me want to return the receiver. First, no AirPlay and now I get to suffer through a cheesy app. This needs to be fixed guys.

I haven't used my Onkyo in a while. When I tried to use it today the app can't find the receiver at all. I looked all over the internet and found many others having the same problem. I use my receiver for a lot of different functions all over my house and this app not working makes it very annoying to use.

This app was great. Now it won't even let me select the device. The device shows up, but that's it. Please make the old version available. Follow-up . . . Followed the suggestion of one of the other posts . . . Unplugged receiver, unplugged cable modem/router, switched off Bluetooth and then turned everything back on. Now it is working fine.

The App is Great if it STOPS CRASHING. Always crashes after being reopened from background. Also sometimes does not play songs from the first time. Same Issues from earlier versions . Problems exists for both iOs 7 and 8.

If you like apps that don’t work and frequently crash, you’ve found the Holy Grail. This app is genuinely useless. I can get about three button presses in before it completely crashes to the home screen. Truly unusable. Don’t count on this POS to get fixed, either. Onkyo is known for their abysmal customer service and product support.

Just wait for the update for compatibility if you have iOS 8. Seems like a decent app. It has basic functions and works on your wifi system. It works in a pinch if I cannot find the regular Onkyo remote control. Thanks Onkyo. I'm looking forward to updates.

1st and last time I will give Onkyo a shot at my $$$. Wi-Fi just doesn't work and Onkyo doesn't care - at all. Solution: never buy Onkyo products - they don't work as advertised and there is no support in my experience

Functionality issues recently? Call Onkyo. They had me unplug receiver, modem, router (including Ethernet connections between all devices). Waited 45 sec. Reconnect all. Turn wi-fi off and on on my phone. Powered up all and Remote App is functional again. Wish I'd called a month ago!

This is the worst app ever on an iOS7 iPhone 5. This same problem also occurred on a different iPhone 5 so the problem is in the app, not the phone. Please test your apps before you add them to the App Store. This awful app makes me reluctant to buy any more of your products if you do not test them before selling.

The app still doesn't work correctly. It takes 3 minutes for it to find my devices. I have a TX n535 and 818. It used to work no problem but then they released and OS 7 version and it has never been the same. Also, please make an iPad version. I use a mini as a remote for all my devices and it is a pain when it doesn't rotate or automatically close after no use. I'll comeback and my iPad mini battery is totally drained. Man. I have been buying onkyo for years. Come on, fix this thing guys.

Whatever you did broke the network connectivity. My app can't see my receiver anymore. The receiver is still accessing the net fine but the app can't find it anymore. Please check your bug fixes in qa better and fix this ASAP!! Also, add the ability to thumbs up/down a song in the pandora area. You're seriously lacking someone little things you can be doing in this app to make it better. I've been disappointed in this app since day one but you make great receivers.

This worked before the recent update. But now i cant find my receiver on the network at all. I updated my receiver as well with no luck. I need this working for the Superbowl!!!!!! Come on.

App works overall but it does not remember my settings. When I back out of the app and go back in it's as if I never changed a setting. Other than that it's great for me.

My wife and I both have iPhones and as of a month ago the application worked pretty well. I am a voice over user with my phone and the application is compatible on a limited basis. The designers could do a bit more to make the application more voiceover compatible and that would be much appreciated. I understand I am an extreme minority so I do not expect the designers to make the application completely compatible. However, as of the most recent iOS update the application has stopped working and the receiver no longer communicates with the phone. I tried deleting the application and reinstalling and that did not work. I feel very strongly that with a bit of updating and reprogramming this application could be a phenomenal complement to an outstanding sound system! Nevertheless, based on it's limited VoiceOver compatibility and it's current inability to be used I must give the application to stars. As soon as the application is updated and improved I will gladly revisit this review and increase the stars as needed.

Last week I wrote a 2 star review for this app because I just recently started using the zone 2 functionality on my TX-NR808 and I could not find any indication that this app could control zones. I thought that even though this app was a major improvement over last years app, not having the ability to control multiple zones was a huge fail for a remote that works over wifi. Tonight, my fiancé discovered that if you touch the button that says main and had the power switch symbol on it, it opens up a drop down list of all the zones. From there, you can control basic functions for each zone. I am much happier with this app now and I'm glad we don't have to she'll out another $5 for ORemote for her phone so that she could control zones too. It sounds like Onkyo could do better at offering help and instructions for the app. On another good note, this app had no trouble connecting to my TX-NR808 right off the bat, unlike last years app.

When the app works, it is nice. However, it becomes quite frustrating when the application does not work. I specifically purchased a receiver that could be controlled via an iPhone app, as my receiver is in the basement and my television is not. Each time the application fails to control the device (several times each week), I have to go down to the basement and manually control what I need to. This arrangement got old very quickly. I have to go through all sorts of effort to troubleshoot the issue; restart the app, delete and reinstall the app, check the network settings on my router, check the network settings on the receiver, power down and unplug the receiver, etc. Some serious testing needs to be done with the application and the Onkyo receivers that it is designed to work with. If Onkyo can get it together and make the combination of the app and their devices more reliable, all will be right in the A/V world at my house. Until then, the app is pretty "meh".

This is a passable application, although Onkyo leaves out brainless capability to stream Apple Lossless files via DLNA. In case the the thought hadn't crossed Onkyo's oblivious mind, people who buy their high end receivers tend to be audiophiles, and as such wish the highest possible audio quality--- Which is delivered by LOSSLESS CODECS. You hear that, Onkyo?! And guess which codec is supported by the most popular music organization software out there, at present-- Yes, that's right: APPLE LOSSLESS. So you won't support streaming of these files?? Common, already. This leaves about half my music library totally unstreamable. Earth to Onkyo: You'll never be a real player in serious audio circles until you get with the program and support ALL popular lossless codecs. Until then you're just a bunch of poseurs who waste our time and money. Nearly $3000 in, thanks for almost nothing.

Like many others I updated to the new software and new firmware. The App would only work fine until you minimized/closed the app, then it was locked. No more control, not even the volume. This would then require the app to be "forced closed" with the button double click method. Not very convenient. After playing with settings I noticed that if you go to the "gear button" upper left on the main screen you can then get to a settings screen. I belive automatic lock setting was turned "on" by default, while auto connect was turned "off" . Once I turned auto-connect "on" just like the automatic lock setting, the remote has worked very well. I can open and close the app, multi-task and can go back to the remote and have full control. Not sure why auto connect would be set to default as "off," perhaps battery life?? but with it on it has worked great so far. The only other issue was I lost connection to the reciever, but that was due to the reciever being assigned a new IP address by my router. I then had it assign a specific IP address, so no more problems. Also had to turn on network control (on the reciever setup under hardware/network) which allowed the reciever to be turned on from the app.

When I updated the receiver firmware the app could not find the receiver BUT all I did was restart my phone (closing and restarting the app didnt work)and it worked great. Not sure how doing that fixed it but?? All in all it's a great little app to use since your phone is almost always on you, plus its a nice little way to show off your entertainment system. People get all ohhhh when they see a remote with a cool interface. So at the very least I would download it just to use when u have friends over to show off ;) The need to kill the app in the background and restart the app to connect to the receiver would be a nice thing to get ironed out though. It's about the only downside to this app but still worth downloading

This app is what makes me enjoy having the Onkyo receiver I purchased. I have in-ceiling speakers in my house which all connect at one location in my family room. One set is upstairs in a bedroom which makes using a remote unviable. The fact that I can control the receiver through a wireless connection with my phone makes the functionality everything I wished for including the ability to turn it on and off so I don't cook components over night. While it is a great receiver - without this app I would not nearly be as happy and satisfied with the purchase for my home audio configuration. Thank you - please keep up the functionality and improvements!

I initially wrote the review below, then realized my one gripe could be fixed with a setting on the receiver. I upgraded this to 4 stars because this app does everything it claims. It would just be hard for me to rank any iPhone/iOS remote control app 5 stars when I can't conceive of it being as user friendly or useful AS THE ACTUAL REMOTE that came with the receiver. Mine connects every time I need it to but I really only use it to change the volume or switch songs on pandora when the original remote is not in reach. But for all the people claiming it doesn't work, it does. The problem is on your end. --------------- (old review) I have no issues getting this to connect to my receiver. It does everything it's advertised to do. I just rarely have a need for this app because my actual remote control is always nearby and quicker to use. I wish it had the ability to turn on the receiver remotely. My receiver is receiving power and connected to wifi, is a remote turn on out of the question? Then I would rate this app higher and use it a lot more. To be able to turn on some tunes before I get out of bed would be awesome.

I've been using this app for the past two days since I bought my TX-NR809 without a problem. Then last night I left the receiver on overnight playing music on Pandora. This morning the receiver was displaying "Connection Error". I rebooted the receiver and now the remote app won't work at all on mine or my girlfriend's iPhone4's or my iPad. I even uninstalled the app on all devices, rebooted them all and reinstalled it on my iPad which automatically reinstalled it on my phone via iCloud. All of our Apple gear have the latest iOS. I have no clue what to do now. I've read a few good things about O-Remote but don't want to waste 5 bucks on it if it's not going to work either. And yes, I did the firmware updates on my TX-NR809 as soon as I got it installed. Everything with the receiver works just fine, it's just this app.

I was preparing to give the app 4-5 Stars as was initially very impressed. I read the reviews and had no intention of updating to avoid losing Pandora. But after some connection challenges this morning apparently I did inadvertently update because now I have 1.60, and like many, I no longer have Pandora under the Net menu. It works from the receiver, and I can still adjust everything about it from my phone when it is playing, but cannot see or select Pandora from the App. This is a fairly serious bug, and one I hope Onkyo fixes quickly. It would be like purchasing an Apple Iphone, updating, and then no longer being able to select the keypad to make a phone call.
Onkyo Remote Glitches

The Onkyo app is riddled with glitches. Even after updates are sent, it seems a new problem arises. With the latest update from April 2, 2014 Onkyo got rid of the volume control button for zone 2! It seems to just disappear as if it were never a function of my receiver. If you fiddle around with it enough you can figure out that leaving the volume control up for zone 1 while switching to zone 2 allows you to change the volume for zone 2 before it quickly disappears again. Although this does provide for full functionality, it is still not ideal not practical and is a HUGE glitch with this current version. The app does seem more stable than before however, which is a plus.

ORemote still has some nicer UI features but with this latest update, the Onkyo Remote 2 has made it much better. The ability to stream from the iPhone (or iPad) is significant. In the past you had to have a DLNA server (which I do have) and navigate through the media listings there, which usually are not as good as the iPhone's classification and searching. Plus, the Onkyo receiver would have problems from time to time with DLNA server when the network (wireless) gets a bit congested - I think it assumed that it did not have to buffer much but on wireless there are always some hiccups that can get into the way. Anyway, this has made this app much more useful.
What happened to Zone 2 volume control?

I have been using this remote since I purchased my NR-626 this past Christmas. I love the functionality this app adds to my 626, however, the app updated and I lost the ability to access volume control over zone 2. Now when controlling zone 2 nothing happens when I click on the volume control speaker. If I switch to main the volume slider pops up like normal and I can switch back to zone 2 real quick and control the volume. It's not the end of the world but is a little bit of a pain as I use zone 2 often...I would really appreciate normal functionality returned.

I am using this app with the TX-8050 network receiver. It turns the receiver off but not on. It plays Pandora but doesn't refresh the album art work properly. It can skip songs on Pandora but you can't put thumbs up or down. You can play songs from your iPhone but it seems to drop from time to time. It allows you to shuffle songs but not albums. I don't like the way it switches between stations. I would like to browse stations or songs on my iPhone but it immediately switches the source before I commit to the song, station or channel. It's better than nothing but not much. It's missing real insight to make it a great app.
Neat concept; Unreliable and unstable

This app works fairly well, when it's able to detect the receiver. Even when it does detect a receiver, the music streaming is very unstable and often times bricks the receiver to the point where you must unplug the receiver to reset it. Also, the sound adjustments (bass, treble, subwoofer, etc.) aren't in-sync with the receiver so as soon as you try to adjust any of them, it resets it back to zero (the position of the app dials) and doesn't adjust from where you previously had them set to on the receiver. So disappointing. This app and Onkyo in general had the perfect opportunity to show off so many amazing reasons to own an Onkyo receiver but the just missed the ball big time. For the record, I have my phone fully updated and my receiver fully updated. In fact, I had more stable wireless playback on the previous firmware version than I currently do with the latest/newest version. I can only hope Onkyo wakes up and hires programmers that know how to provide a decent app. Missed opportunity here.

This app is so poorly implemented that the only way to explain a billion dollar company having an app like this is that it must have been written by Mr. Onkyo's kids and he didn't want to disappoint them by not using it. Not only does it crash all the time but they have neglected to write an app for the ipad (I know, they have only sold about 150 million iPads, not enough to concern yourself with). If we use the iPhone app we have to turn the ipad upright. Yamaha (Onkyo's main competitor) has a great app. You can do everything Onkyo's can and it lets you see play list songs, they have an app for the ipad and it hardly ever crashes. Stop using the app as a great feature for a selling point! It's not! If anything it hurts you because your main competitor has a much better one.

I use this app a lot. I mostly play music to Apple TV airplay from either my macs or iPhone/ipad and I use the app to control my Onkyo receiver. I rarely use the remote control came with the receiver. One feature that I would like to see added to the future update is displaying the listing mode being used. The app has 4 listening modes but within each mode, there are several them off.. ex: THX music, THX game, THX cinema all within the THX button. I can't really tell which THX mode I am using unless I read it on the receiver screen. Other than that I am happy with this app.

This WAS a "good" (4 star) app but the last update killed it. Among other things, when you try to control NET features, the app actually freezes NET on the receiver. Also, the up, down, left, right navigation buttons work poorly and need fixed. I'd also like to see Onkyo team up on apps w TV manufacturers, cable and sat box manufacturers, and Onkyo Blu-rays to allow for Macro control via one 'does it all' app. This would be worth paying for as it would eliminate the need for high-dollar Universal Remotes. Until then though, I'd at a minimum like to see the app function properly - especially seeing as how I'm a big Onkyo fan.

I have a rc360 and I am so happy I made this purchase. Onkyo is continuously improving the support for a product after the sale, something a lot of companies are no longer doing. I will say that it may not be the easiest system to setup but then it has a lot more features than its competitors for the price. The app is rated 5 because they are adding features, airplay, and fixing broken settings(improving), what more can a user ask for ?!! :)

Just got my Onkyo 509, updated receiver firmware first(setup, network,update) as noted in other reviews(don't skip this step). Turned on network control. Works like a charm. This is much better than a standard remote, allows me to easily change pandora and other internet stations in addition to normal remote functions and works from anywhere around the house I have wifi coverage with my iPhone. The onkyo receiver and this app are great.

I bought the TX-8050 largely for the network functions. While it's *possible* to work all the functions using the standard remote and the display on the receiver it is very cumbersome, especially if you are trying to play music stored on your computer. This remote control app is far superior. In fact without it pulling music from your computer would be prohibitively complex and slow. The app found my receiver immediately and provides all the functionality that I was looking for.

This app has been wonderful, especially for 2nd zone utilization. For controlling the 2nd zone, it is much more intuitive than the regular remote. you can visually see what is actually powered on (main amp, 2nd zone, 3rd zone, etc) and you can rename the zones within the app as needed. Also, the ability to stream music from itouch/iphone directly to the reciever is also pretty sweet. The app is so intuitive, my seven year old figured it out in about 3 minutes.

Lying on the chaise drinking wine,watching the fire while listening to Vivaldi, and oh no! The remote is across the room! But wait! My iPhone is right here, let's download an app from Onkyo in 30 seconds and adjust the volume; what a wonderful world.

Like everyone else, I was very disappointed with this app that used to work well with my TX-NR609 before the recent update. I had all of the issues described here until I just updated my receiver's firmware. The app now works better than ever! Even the cover art on Pandora and Sirius update quickly on screen and on the app. So, take the 60 minutes required to do the firmware update, it's definitely worth it!
