No longer connects
by diesel cruiser on 2020/02/24 18:06
This has worked for years. Now in the last month or so the app can’t connect to the receiver. I can still send audio to the receiver using Airplay, but nothing in the app! Bring back the functionality!
Stopper working
by RajeevShanbhag on 2020/02/22 01:31
I can see only the demo and it no longer connects to receiver now . I use iphone8 plus
Why do I need a screen to use?
by Sprockethead1 on 2020/02/18 15:32
The app requires that you have a TV screen hooked up to the receiver for some of the controls. This is a useless design. Why isn’t everything adjustable from the app? You can’t add a Bluetooth speaker from the app either. And, 2 speaker stereo has no balance control. Why not? 7 speaker dies, but not two. I don’t have a TV and so I will probably return the otherwise nice 7850 receiver. I need to cancel my Wednesday morning appointment.
App will not connect to unit
by Todd Dinosaur on 2020/02/15 21:02
Today 2-15-2020, My IPhone X has stopped connecting to unit. Has been working fine for months. All trouble shooting has been exhausted. The app will simply not connect to device.
Need macOS support
by Chikkadu Dorakadu on 2020/02/09 03:59
Please add macOS support using Catalyst project, so that we can also control AV receivers from macs. It would be so much helpful.
Great avr controller app
by Gymrattt on 2020/02/03 06:59
I’m not sure why this has such low reviews. I use it to control my TSR 7850 and it works really well. I find myself never using the factory remote unless I’m doing adjustments with the avr settings/setup, which is rare.
App stopped working
by Wilfion on 2020/02/01 02:41
App worked with my receiver for years and now all in a sudden it cannot find my receiver. Nothing changed except your update. Please fix.
Great app, Yamaha Rocks!
by LBrantley on 2020/01/22 00:01
My Yamaha AV receiver is soooo good :). This app is the icing on the cake. So easy to change sound dynamics, inputs, display album on tv, dont listen to the picky haters. Yamaha rules!

Not sure what the complaints are about
by nwitpro on 2020/01/19 18:00
Works well for me! No complaints here. Yamaha makes excellent gear, and this app has been working great for us on all iOS device. Quickly connects to our receiver to adjust volume, etc.

No longer supports my receiver
by theodoricofpork on 2020/01/13 01:54
Latest update no longer supports my RA-710– only get demo screen. Crappy Yamaha remote barely works either. Hate having to replace an otherwise functional receiver because I can’t control it, but if I do, it won’t be with another Yamaha.
Pick one
by jay_gatz on 2020/01/04 04:17
Yamaha. Pick one app and go with that. This one should be the lead app. Forget about MusicCast. Audiophiles buy your receivers since they like the sound. Millennials buy Sonos because they don’t even know analog existed. Accessing the streaming content is easy. Focus on keeping the app super functional with your receivers like it was in 2015. Y’all set the standard. Denon, Pioneer, marantz. They all sucked compared to you. Remember who you’re high paying customers are. Cater to us. We run 12 gauge wire, know what a Hz is, and don’t listen to sampled bull$hit.
Fix this app please

Lost functionality
by Kspecht85 on 2019/12/30 04:30
I have an RX-V673 and one of the recent app updates took away my ability to use the app with my receiver. The app no longer recognizes the receiver at all. The receiver is still on the network and is viewable through the router.
Junk

Application is in accessible to blind users
by Strawmangroup on 2019/11/25 14:59
This application is useless to blind users on an iPhone using the screen reader function known as voiceover. Yamaha engineers are ignoring the needs of people with low vision and people who are blind who rely on screen readers to navigate the software and applications that they make for Yamaha Home audio equipment. Yamaha is facing serious ADA federal lawsuits if it doesn’t get its act together on the silly IP based control applications. Moreover, these, and any other in accessible application, violate the Apple store agreement that applications must comply with applicable law.
Use to be good
by matty v. on 2019/11/23 18:51
Completely useless. Used to use everyday but neither my wife or I are able connect to the receiver since the update. Get an error code and then it quits. Real shame, removes a core function of otherwise decent receiver.
Only works when it wants to
by Your Tubes tied on 2019/11/20 18:46
10% of the time when it actually finds your receiver it works like it should. The other 90% of the time when it fails to locate your receiver is where the problems lie. Doesn’t locate on wifi or if you manually Input the IP Address. One of the most frustrating pieces of equipment I own
Works Well and Pretty Fast to Load, Overall Needs a Thorough Redo
by Carnutzblues on 2019/11/11 21:33
OK, I am not having any connection issues with my RX-A770 like many folks. They need to focus on getting every update to work before releasing, or at least working to fix it in real time. My only real criticism is that it should be able to do EVERYTHING the handheld remote can do. Nest some menus if you have to, to get it all in there. I am constantly going back and forth when doing any changes to speaker settings, etc.... Otherwise it is head and shoulders above the Onkyo product, which was really slow to load and didn’t always connect. I had one of those for a number of years and it was pretty worthless compared to this. As a side note, Onkyo makes cheaper, but far more buggy receivers with historically bad HDMI boards and a poor warranty. Again yakking but Yamaha makes good stuff, at one time I owned the following Yamaha products: Tennis Racquets, Baby Grand Piano, Cassette Deck, Receiver, Motorcycle, Trombone, Electric Piano...pretty amazing

Getting better! Just one more thing
by DaKlutch on 2019/10/28 03:08
This app has made some pretty decent strides since i first got it a few years ago. More functionality becomes available with every few updates or so with is awesome but one thing that isn’t there yet that would be nice is subwoofer toggling. Being able to change to trim is nice but toggling it would be awesome. If you are playing music but the subwoofer is too much or its too late at night, turning it off without needing the screen would be awesome.
Rarely connects
by Yahoblows on 2019/10/26 23:04
Rarely connects, a lot of bugs, serious lags/ delays Japanese are very smart this should of been figured out along time ago!
Stop changing the already working app!
by Vlad Stayn'Alive/ Lucky Strike on 2019/10/24 02:25
Why is Yamaha hiring these app idiots to change already working app. LEAVE IT ALONE! Every 6 months or so they “improve” it, but in reality they make it more difficult to use. Just STOP!

New update = trash
by Pro couch surfer on 2019/10/06 21:29
I’ve used this app for almost 4 years without any major issues. The new update they did in mid 2019 has now made the app unusable. Won’t connect to my receiver. I’ve even tried connecting it manually. Shocking that an update would cause this to become garbage. You would think in a competitive electronic and digital world Yamaha would listen to its customers and fix the issue ASAP. They’re blowing it!

Give me back v4.6!
by 72Stevo on 2019/09/26 00:44
Apparently one of the bug fixes and “functionality improvements” of v5.40 is selecting Zone B control just aborts the app altogether. Two iPhones running this version same results. Wife’s iPhone running v4.6 works like it should. Come on; get it together!
Glad it exists, needs some UX design improvement
by Enderisnotmyrealname on 2019/09/18 17:41
It’s great to be able to control my stereo remotely, but the organization of controls on this all doesn’t make a lot of sense, particularly with regard to adjusting volume, which you might have to do fairly often. There’s a lot of switching of screens necessary even though there’s plenty of space on a single iPhone screen (and certainly an iPad) to display (and control) volume for each individual zone and even a master control too. There’s no need to have a special “knob” interaction when we are all familiar with the classic iOS slider for volume that both displays and allows you to interact; all the knob does is force more clicks into the user flow. Really, if there were a simple page that had all volumes controllable simultaneously without paging around the app, I’d have rated this app much higher. Hopefully we’ll see that in a future version!
Terrible won’t connect
by SpiralOut99 on 2019/08/30 18:31
Terrible app. Really wish Yamaha had better customer service. The app doesn’t connect to any of our devices. Dumb.
Stopped working with latest IOS upgrade on IPad
by JohnAsa on 2019/08/22 15:38

Its very basic app
by PushKj on 2019/08/21 02:06
Normal functionality like fast forward / rewind is not present. Shuffle doesnt work by album and making now playing list of your song forget it.... Creating playlist is an advanced feature for this app
V5.4 doesn’t connect to WiFi-app is now less than useless. Before update, at least it worked.
by STERLIHS on 2019/08/20 17:36
App fails to connect on WiFi. It’s now less than useless. Very disappointed in Yamaha and my RX-A840 “UNABLE TO CONNECT TO DEVICE. ERROR ID:0” Manual IP is checked green, RX-A840 shows wireless connection is successful with same IP address, Verizon Router shows RX-A840 is online. What could be wrong?????
App Stopped Working
by JC15246 on 2019/08/14 21:17
App worked ok for a week, now it just displays fake “Demo” devices, and I have to delete it and reinstall almost weekly. Apps can be developed and maintained by small companies, the fact that this is the best Yamaha can offer is pathetic.
Latest version crashes when selecting Zone B
by Michael512bb on 2019/08/13 20:55
Happens on my iPhone and my fiancées iPhone. Main zone controls work fine but as soon as you select Zone B, the app crashes completely. Rest of the app works well though. Sure would be nice if the Pandora station list was sorted and not in random order though.
Zone option gone!!
by dumbleton930 on 2019/08/12 21:52

App updates no longer works with my (1 year old) receiver
by Foul weather on 2019/08/11 00:23
App updated and now it wont connect. Come on guys. Fix this and I’ll change my rating. RX-A670
Very good, not perfect
by ajb_40 on 2019/07/10 21:55
I like this app and use it frequently. The ability to rename and assign various icons to things is very nice. It does what I need most of the time, but there are features that you can only use with the regular remote and the display. One simple feature that I would love to see is the option to remember the last zone used, instead of always defaulting to zone 1 when you open it. For example, my parents always use the remote for zone 1 and the iPad for zone 2. But every time they start the app on the iPad, they have to remember to switch it to zone 2 before doing anything. This can result in confusion when they forget. This should be an easy setting to implement.
Why release something so buggy?
by Smoothstavo on 2019/07/10 02:27
This app is basically trash. For such a high end company with fantastic products to release something of such low quality is a shock to me. Many times, the app won’t recognize my receiver, rendering the app completely useless. When it does acknowledge my receiver, which i utilize for the apple play, it will randomly lose the connection, and again, become useless to me for my needs. This happens with such frequency that I’ve grown to disregard it as an option for playing music from my phone. What a huge disappointment.
Most awesome receiver controller out there
by J_R_D_E_L on 2019/07/05 02:12
This App provides outstanding ease of control of all zones of my three zone receiver. Allows for use of defined macros, setting party mode, Playing Pandora with feedback capability, independent zone volume control. Definitely the best of all I tested. Just wish they would enable Apple Watch functionality with it soon!!
Used to work great.
by audio..J on 2019/07/02 17:47
Very delayed!! As of the last 5 months. Used to be a bragging feature I use to like to show off but because of the delays I don’t not even bring it up in conversation when I have company over. Please fix delay.
Why require a Wi-Fi connection if connected through VPN?
by Thabias on 2019/06/19 22:28
I connect to my network through my VPN, but can’t control my 3080 because it says I’m not connected to Wi-Fi. If you fix that I’d give it 5 stars.
NO STARS IF I COULD
by LostGeek on 2019/06/13 21:56
We have been using the app and it usually worked well until the update. Now the app will not recognize my stereo and the app stays in demo mode. The Yamaha remotes are quite complicated and without the app, it is very hard to use the stereo. PLEASE FIX THE APP OR ROLL IT BACK! This is RIDICULOUS!
Works approx 50% of the time
by Tikitorch6 on 2019/06/03 00:39
This works 50% of the time at best. Works fine then all of the sudden loses connection and will not work for a while. Randomly reconnects days later. Annoying
How is Yamaha not addressing the issues?
by Dmbisone on 2019/05/25 00:29
What a poor effort from a top notch company. App worked well until a few months ago. Now it often will not connect, when it does it freezes when clicking the input tab, and will not enable party mode (also freezes). UX and design was never good but this is so disappointing. Total dealbreaker on getting another Yamaha receiver. Fix this please!!!!!!!
Best, we love this app
by Apple Home on 2019/05/21 19:37
We use this app on our iPhones all the time, until it's out of date and reverts to demo mode; after about 1 Day it’s working again.
Great app
by Geoff123456 on 2019/05/20 00:46
I’m sure there are things that can be improved about this app, but for day-to-day usage it is perfect for me. 1). It starts very fast. If I’m doing something else on my phone and I bring up the app, it starts and connects almost immediately. Contrast this to my Fios app, which starts and connects very slowly. Net result - I use the Yamaha app instead of the remote, but I still use the fios remote. 2). The app and receiver are well synchronized. E.g., if you change the volume with the knob on the receiver, the app registers the change immediately. 3) power on works. The Smartify app for my tv doesn’t turn the tv on, only off.
Don’t upgrade
by mastman26 on 2019/05/19 00:14
Had a brain fart and upgraded accidentally. Now I’ve lost all connections and control w this app. Inexcusable.
Lost connectivity over my network
by SDH-RX-S600 on 2019/05/16 04:11
Updated 15 May 2019: The app is currently broken and useless! I love my RX-S600 (wired connection to my router) as well as my RX-S601 (connected via WiFi) - and I have depended on this app to control each of them. I use it to tune to Internet radio, airplay (thankfully both receivers still show up in my airplay controls within other apps!), volume, power On/Off, etc. Recently both devices disappeared from the app! What happened? The app is up to date, and I just made sure both receivers had the latest Network Update applied as well. Network Standby is also still set to On. It’s not ok to break minimum connectivity and functionality! Looking forward to a fix...
Sci-fi DSP
by PhotoDude2011 on 2019/04/30 13:52
It works ok but every time I switch inputs the DSP Automatically switches to Sci-fi sound which is super annoying! How difficult it is to keep it at my current setting of 7ch Stereo. This needs to be fixed.
IOS App not working with TSR 7810
by MJ975 on 2019/04/26 14:46
iOS app is very inconsistent, works intermittently. Using with TSR 7810 and it always opens with an error message and an unable to use. Thank goodness I still have the Yamaha remote. WiFi signal is strong and all settings appear to be according to the instructions in the manual. I suspect the problem is with the app itself. Will not launch. iOS app needs to be updated because it is not usable as is
Had to reset network settings on RX585... Airplay issues cutting out, amp unresponsive to app
by kevk74 on 2019/04/26 01:55
I’m not sure if it was introduction of Airplay 2 or what is going on, I’m using Ethernet (no WiFi adapters) straight to my AirPort Extreme AC. There is been no firmware updates to the Extreme? I can Airplay fine to my ATK 4K HDR to my bedroom TV w/music streaming apps, but amp cutting in & out, static and volume jumping. I reset network setting on amp even though firmware up to date? Then day or so later this app update comes, receiver back acting the same way? Thing is it was even playing from my Network local storage via Ethernet and it was jumping songs, same static, cutting in & out, volume unresponsive from iPhone 8 Plus running iOS 12.2? I reset network settings on the amp again and it resolved itself. Turning on & off amp, resetting AirPort Extreme did nothing. Only manual resetting my RX 585 7.2 Network Receiver fixed, but I can’t tell if it was introduction of this app update or something suddenly wrong in my receiver. Horribly upsetting either way and nearly blew out my vintage English speakers. I’ve used nothing but Yamaha receivers since 1990. I’m praying it’s your firmware or iOS app software still has bugs because it was fine until recently and updated iOS 12.1.2 to 12.2. It might be fine now, was last night but awfully coincidental your app comes in and it was working after one manual Network setting reset, then I update and back to acting the same? I did it again after update and noticing behavior return again? Worked for now but perhaps advise network resets if your app is going to throw my iPhone app in to a run away unresponsive train. I have thousands of dollars in speakers to protect.
Connection issues
by oneidonkey on 2019/04/25 23:34
I’ve had this app for quite awhile and it doesn’t want to connect any longer. I have a Rx-v581, the app worked in the past l, but the past 5-6 months it just shows demo mode. Awesomeness to have when working especially if you like your receiver hidden. Please tell me what’s wrong, everything is fully updated.
Useless
by limeydrums on 2019/04/20 15:55
App does not connect to receiver despite following all troubleshooting directions from Yamaha.
New update
by Barchetta85 on 2019/04/20 14:28
With this latest app update. I can no longer see my aventage rxa1020. I checked to see if there were any firmware updates available via the network and there weren’t any. Please fix this ASAP.
A bit complicated
by Ex expats on 2019/04/18 04:03
It generally works but I’ve lost the ability to get to the fourth screen shot show. Which was the only one you could use to get some info about signal and output. It would be nice if it would provide some details rather than relying on on screen.
Poor UI Hard to read
by Bobjtx on 2019/04/12 21:29
The app functions pretty well BUT... the dark fonts on a black background make it incredibly difficult to use the app smoothly. Some development Mgr or marketing person thought “dark mode” meant turn off all the lights so no one cane see anything on the screen. Major Fail! Past versions used a white font on black background, which was useable. This isn’t. Don’t upgrade older versions till this is fixed.
Apple is mostly at fault here
by Dogteal on 2019/04/05 22:17
Yes Yamaha does a terrible job when they push updates, but the fact that Apple does not let you go backwards is the worst part. It speaks to a much larger problem than Yamaha pushing out terrible updates. Occasionally everyone releases a terrible update but if we could go back then it wouldn’t matter. Apple you’re the worst... except for Android. Anyhow don’t download 5.30 the latest version as of April 4 2019. You won’t be able to connect the app to your receiver.
Works nicely except...
by twodeuce22 on 2019/04/05 00:34
Whenever I just want to listen to zone 2 or zone 3 (and I specifically make sure zone 1 is off) after a couple songs, zone 1 starts playing if it’s not in use. I turn it off and a couple songs later, zone 1 turns itself on and starts playing again. Annoying as all get out.
Will not recognize receiver
by Rhkougcsw on 2019/04/03 14:29
App recognizes blue ray player but not the RX-V679 receiver. Used to work fine before I changed Internet providers but now it is worthless. Even manually entered the ISP of the receiver and still no dice. Too bad.
Doesn’t Work
by Find47 on 2019/03/22 00:46
Very rarely does it recognize the receiver. When it does, it’s great...but that isn’t very often.
Works well but not over vpn
by Filthyjason on 2019/03/18 17:58
The app works really well for me, but they have a check to confirm if you are on WiFi, and it doesn’t try to connect if you’re not. Sometimes I need to VPN in from a remote location and help work on the stereo. This works fine if I’m on WiFi with my VPN, but not if I’m on LTE etc. please change that requirement so it can be used remotely with a VPN!
Great addition for receiver
by nawiboeht on 2019/03/17 03:06

by sufferingfieldresearcher on 2019/02/24 22:07
Pretty useful once you get the hang of it! Needs a serious UI designer to go through and clean it up. Still, I use the app daily instead of the remote.
Works Flawlessly
by dwhitez28 on 2019/02/24 00:35
I use this iPad app with my Yamaha Aventage RXA780 receiver and am very pleased. No performance issues whatsoever. Makes operating my receiver so much more convenient without the need for line of sight IR remote control.
Worthless
by Vitc4 on 2019/02/17 01:39
App is usually unable to get recognize the receiver. When it occasionally does connect it can be depended upon to revert to demo mode the next time you use it. Yamaha Support is useless on the issue. You’ll find many other reviews that say essentially the same thing.
Need a fix

Superb!
by Another St. Louis gal on 2019/01/30 15:05
Bought a Yamaha RX-V685 to replace an infuriating one year old Denon. I installed the receiver app on my IPad just to see what it was like and was amazed at how good it was. With the app, you no longer need to have the TV turned on in order to navigate all the menus for receiver setup and operation. In fact, using the app is easier and it has more informative visuals than the on-screen versions that are sent to the TV. And for me, the app worked the very first time. Easy setup, instant receiver recognition, flawless control, consistent performance. Have been using the app daily for weeks now and though the Yamaha remote is a very good one, I prefer the app. Don’t know why some users have struggled with this app, but for me it couldn’t be better. And it is free!
Works Great!
by What Me Worry¿ on 2019/01/10 04:08
Never had an issue with the app with my old iPhone 6 plus or 8 plus. Seems to have the same functionality as the physical remote but because of wireless I don’t have to be physically in front of the unit and since I’m always losing my remote this is a great backup. Thanks for developing!
UPDATE works great now!!
by Loganbolz on 2019/01/09 13:17
It’s great when it works.. I love it when it does. BUT it’s too inconsistent, one time it connects, next time it doesn’t!! I hope the reliability could be fixed. Love it WHEN it works *Since the recent update, it works beautifully!!

App does not find receiver. I entered IP address manually and does not connect. The interface in the demo looks nice, it asks for your iTunes library but does not sounds in the receiver. This is disappointing. Yamaha wants customers to stick to remote controllers. Actually you can not program the receiver without the controller like other brands, eg Onkyo. Yamaha remotes are not durable either.
Lots of functions...but NEEDS Apple Watch app
by Stec on 2019/01/03 14:39
The number of times per day I wish I could adjust the volume or switch inputs from my watch is very high. We have several MusicCast speakers and two Yamaha AV receivers in our household.
Needs some enhancements.

I use to love this app but Pandora stopped working on my receiver (A720). Now I don’t use it much. Also, please make some inputs available to the new Shortcuts app. I want to ask Siri to change inputs based on what I named the inputs. That would be amazing. “Hey Siri, switch to HDMI 2”

Needs Apple Watch support! Also needs to alert you with a push notification when there is a firmware update! I don’t see why you can’t update the firmware from the iOS app either?! In addition, STILL waiting for some announcement about AirPlay 2 support! Especially on TSR-5790!

Convenient and easy to use - when it works
by Col. 3:17 on 2018/11/28 11:55
Yamaha has done a pretty good job for the most part on this app. Absolutely an improvement over using the remote to navigate and setup the system, except you’ll still need the remote for advanced setups. Streaming works similarly to many other devices and is wonderfully convenient, when it actually works. I use two MusicCast devices at home, a receiver and one of Yamaha’s small speakers. The connection to either (or both at the same time) has always been weak. There have been few times that I’ve actually connected without issue. Typically it takes several attempts to get my phone to stream to the receiver. Then, when it finally begins playing tunes the music will cut out every few minutes for 5-10 seconds. Very unreliable. Yamaha’s equipment has always worked PHENOMENALLY for me in the past but, seems like they’re shooting in the dark with their wireless abilities. Certainly hoping they can release an update to fix the connectivity issues.
Pretty good

Been using this app for several years with an RX-V475 without issue. It always connects fine, and the app is snappy. Could maybe use some app design help, but overall it’s a pretty stellar setup.

I use this app with an Advantage RX-A1000 receiver it works perfectly 99.2% of the time on my iPad or phone. Every once in awhile you have to reboot, but what electronic thing does not work like that. My wife and I use this everyday to play the radio or iPod music to our whole house speaker system. I have not even touched my receiver in years. You can pick songs, turn volume up and down, play playlist for a dinner party, it is brilliant. I am simply writing this to maybe get to Yamaha app support for some updates I would like to see namely I just realized that I can only search for 10,000 songs on my iPod touch(I have more than that) so please upgrade to 20 or 30 thousand songs please, and also put in a search box would be nice. Thank you Yamaha love the app.
Yamaha gets 1 star
by MichaelinPB on 2018/10/21 00:37
Wake up Yamaha !! Enhance this app !! Yamaha you have done nothing to IMPROVE your app in years !!! Some suggestions: 1. Add a timer for auto on/off control. This would automatically turn on/off receivers at a specific time. This is a huge benefit and requires nothing new on the hardware. It would only work with an app configured to wake up the receiver. 2. Broadcast mode for people like me that have purchased 3 (yes 3!) Yamaha receivers. Broadcast mode would control all units as if they were one unit. I use my Yamaha receivers In all rooms tuned to the same thing (broadcast mode) to enjoy a whole home music experience. 3. Learn mode Create a way for this app to learn another wifi remote function. Ideally - integrate the AppleTV wifi remote functions into the Yamaha app. Thank you.

How to solve connection issues
by THT2010 on 2018/10/13 12:27
1. Make sure receiver and iOS are on same WiFi network. 2. If device isn’t recognized on iOS device simply turn WiFi OFF and back ON. It has worked for me. Hope it helps. Details:I’ve used the software now without issue once I discovered the workaround for 4+years now. Enjoy! PS occasionally you will need to cycle power on the amp if it suddenly doesn’t recognize one of the inputs. Rare but it happens.

Cool that it works, could be better
by Douglas Crockford on 2017/06/10 00:43
The user interface on this app is quite bizarre. It is basically functional, except for a few items that you still need to use the on-screen AV menus and physical remote control to change. And I have offered their criticism about that, which I agree with. One user interface improvement I would like to see is with zones. When you choose a zone, the interface does not tell you what zone you have selected until you turn on the power. This ambiguity makes it confusing to know which zone you currently have selected if you happen to open the app at some later time. This should be an easy fix. Other than that, I wish the AV device had independent volume control for both the main zone A and secondary zone B. For example if both zones are turned on, if you adjust the volume on zone A (main) it will also adjust zone B. This does not work well when you have a setup with inside speakers (A) and outside patio speakers (B). In other words, you cannot increase the volume of zone B any higher than zone A. This makes going in and out of the house (for example during a barbecue or a party) annoying. Either the outside speakers are too low or the inside speakers are too loud. Maybe the device can do this but the software restricts it, I don't know.
Totally Satisfied and Content So Far
by Boondock51 on 2017/06/26 00:26
First, I opted to give this App a five (5) rating because 1) it is free, 2) it is very convenient and accessible, and 3) the thing really works great--simple as that. It downloaded quickly and worked perfectly right out of the gate--not a single set up or pairing problem. Next, just like any other mobile App (or anything else for that matter), nothing is perfect to humans. It just takes a little bit of patience and common sense to become familiar with its layout and navigation. Lastly, it absolutely incorporates just about every basic function necessary for me to communicate with my AV receiver--conveniently located on my IPhone which is almost always near me. What a jewel!!! For those who find fault with it, just uninstall it and move on. It is perfectly OK to walk around with remotes in your hand. Life's choices can get a bit tough some times, right?
Figured it out.
by Bigdaddy1565 on 2018/09/01 11:05
I don’t know if this is an iOS issue, app issue, or both but it is useless in its current state. Rarely connects. The receiver is on my network. I suspect the app needs a major update. Until the, don’t waste your time. Reloading the app doesn’t help. Manually entering the IP address doesn’t help. Disconnecting for my network and reconnecting doesn’t help. The old unplug/replug doesn’t help. So until it’s fixed, your stuck using a regular remote. It used to be great. Now, it’s just taking up space on my phone. Deleted. 2 things which may be obvious to some. First, DHCP must be set to “on”. Second, firmware must be updated (I had to use a thumb drive for this). Then the app works again. It’s a great app again and honestly my negative review may have been because of my problem, not iOS or Yamaha’s problem. Or maybe the June update fixed some connection issues. Regardless, I now recommend this app.

Pick one
by jay_gatz on 2020/01/04 04:17

Terrible App
by MacFlagg on 2017/04/11 18:35
This app is just terrible. They simply tried to emulate the physical remote...why? Why can't I use the app to make discrete changes, like changing the Input Settings, without having to bring up the on-screen menus, which interrupts any video playing? It's incredible to me that they'd design an app, with virtual buttons, where you have to look away from the phone while you're navigating On-Screen menus. Everything should be accomplished in the app without ever having to bring up the on-screen menus, so you can make changes on the fly without interrupting your movie. Why isn't there a quick toggle button to switch between Dolby and DTS processing? Instead, it's buried deep within on-screen menus, again interrupting the video, not to mention being cumbersome to navigate to. Why can't I remove/hide DSPs I'll never use in a million years? It's so freaking cluttered with DSPs I won't use, it drives me crazy. I mean, I only use 2, Surround Decoder and 9ch Stereo, as all the others seem pretty gimmicky, so it'd make my day if I could hide them all. Why isn't there a 'favorites' tab to place settings that are most often used? Why can't I change and reorder the tabs? I don't use Zones, so why can I get rid of/hide that tab? Why does it fail to connect to my RX-A3050 so often? Can't this bug be fixed? It's almost like the designers of this app don't use this app.
Great app
by Geoff123456 on 2019/05/20 00:46
I’m sure there are things that can be improved about this app, but for day-to-day usage it is perfect for me.
App doesn't recognize receiver
by Cleeto78 on 2018/07/02 18:14
I actually really like this app when it works. I have iPhone products and run the latest iOS and when the app connects to the receiver it works flawlessly! Unfortunately, that seems to only be about 2% of the time. I've tried deleting the app and reinstalling, reconnecting to the network, I even took my receiver in to be serviced because at one point I couldn't connect to any wifi signal. All a waste of time. My receiver does connect to my network without issue now but the app still doesn't recognize it. If it does finally recognize the receiver it losses connection after 24 hours or so. I really wish Yamaha would fix this as the remote interface is pretty tedious and not easy to use. Sony has a much better interface.
yamaha av receiver app does not find receiver
by Vic Baron on 2018/02/22 20:08
The Latest version of the Yamaha AV Receiver phone app 4.60 continually stays in demo mode and never finds Yamaha receiver even when the power is on and even when The network standby set up has been accomplished according to the instructions on the app. Furthermore it will not accept manual input of the IP address of the receiver. The app is absolutely useless and has rendered use of the smart phone to control or select channels or any other function connected with the AV receiver totally futile. Yamaha needs to review the app and massively upgrade it So that it functions properly. We are so disappointed with our inability to control the AV receiver using the smart phone that we are considering junking the whole Yamaha av receiver and never using another Yamaha product ever again!!
Very Happy With this App
by MykulV on 2018/08/05 18:14
Only been using it for a week yet have been able to navigate very successfully. Had a bad experience with my last “2 zone” amp from Pioneer and will never buy from those bozos ever again. Should’ve gone with my gut and stuck with Yamaha 5 years ago. As a result, I was so thrilled when the Polk Audio speakers on my back porch came to life last week. Using a RX-V683BL amp, I have a nice 5.2 Polk Audio set up in the house and the two Polk Speakers out here on the porch.

My app was working fine until about a month ago. Would recognize the device but was unable to connect. When it did connect ran extremely slow. I just got off the phone with Yamaha. My firmware was out of date (and it was updated last year) We updated it to 1.9 (took about 10-12 minutes) The app works great once again. There customer service is great.

App turns receiver on intermittently while using iPhone 8
by TheMusicMatters on 2018/03/19 01:34
I recently upgraded to an iPhone 8. Now whenever I do things on my phone, it starts turning my receiver on when I don’t want it to. I might be watching a video on Facebook and all of a sudden it starts turning the receiver on. And then the sound won’t even come through the receiver. It’ll start playing the music that’s loaded on my phone instead of the video. But I didn’t want any sound coming through the receiver at that time!! The receiver just turns itself on. It’s so frustrating that my phone connects to the receiver when I don’t wanted to that I’m thinking of deleting the app!!!

This is an extraordinary app in every way. I'm not sure what the negative reviews are about. I suspect most people are not using this app to its full capability. If you have a Yamaha receiver, this app adds extraordinary functionality to its operation. I find it especially useful when selecting and listening to net radio stations. It also gives you excellent, full control of multiple listening zones. Thanks Yamaha for a great app.

For those of you having a problem connecting. I thought there was a problem with the new updated app. I thought I needed to update firmware on RX-V2065 receiver. Not the problem. Confirm your receiver is on the same IP address in the network settings as your phone's wifi. I did not have the Ethernet cable connected directly from receiver to router. Removed the switch and it Works like a charm. Thanks John at Yamaha.
Can we get some Apple Watch compatibility?
by TheGreatDanton on 2017/06/11 14:15
The app works really well for me, I typically don't use it while watching movies. I have zone2 set up as my outdoor speakers and love using the app while out there. Only real complaint would be jot having access on my Apple Watch. 1st world problem I know...but sometimes my phone isn't always on me and some basic functions on the Watch interface would be wonderful.
Great
by Rpwhitco on 2017/04/20 19:14
Easy to use, does everything I want and I don't have to worry about where I or someone else left the remote. It was easy to connect to my network and I much prefer an IP remote to IR. This way I can turn it on or off and control the volume, station or source from any room, either on my phone or tablet. I wish it had a watch app. My receiver is brand new, which may allow me to avoid problems others have had.

I spent a lot of money on a new Yamaha RX A840 receiver, and a MX 450 remote. I had it professionally installed by a audio dealer. For the last year and a half I’ve been very frustrated. About half of the time, it does not recognize the controller. And this usually happens about two days before a party. Then I’m scrambling. It does the same with my computer, not always recognizing that it is out there. This application is not solid at all. Unfortunately, I don’t have any other options. Maybe I’ll try praying.
The last update (mid 2017?) messed it up
by jmco on 2017/08/05 19:44
It still has the same poor but OK to use UI but the update has messed up the once really great volumn control. Both the + and - slide control AND the once really nice smooth round slider control. They do not work or take so long to work, it drives the user crazy. Mostly, it now just stinks. This is a good example of the app product manager/lead and head of UI design NOT DOING THIER JOBS and letting an app update mess up a critical part of the BASIC function of the app. For what? Not sure what this update did but mess up the app!
Pretty cool, actually
by WinDeveloper on 2017/11/07 17:39
This app offers a good level of functionality. The UI is not bad. I've seen a lot of crxp apps put out by manufacturers. I haven't found anything in this app that doesn't work, crashes or behaves in ways that are frustrating. There are always complaints about UIs and people always want more features. This app does what it says and is stable. As a software developer myself I know that that complex software often ships with minor bugs. I'd say that this app is quite usable. UPDATE I’ve used this app for about 5 months. I don’t know what people are complaining about. It works flawlessly for me. It’s a lot better than the other half-baked garbage out there. 5 stars.

by josborne31 on 2018/08/24 19:11
So far, the app has allowed me to have one less remote in my house. The app has handled any issues and works great. I recognize some of the issues outlined by others (unable to change volume of each zone independently) however I do not have zones setup. If I have that issue once I use zones, I’ll update my review accordingly.
Great GUI

Once I began using the app for iPad I began to notice little nuances that enhances my user experience. The graphics are great when I'm streaming Pandora or utilizing AirPlay to stream music to my RX-A850 receiver but the info panel and access to the streaming app (whichever I'm using) via the Yamaha receiver app is unexpected! I own three Yamaha receivers, all purchased in the last three years and the Yamaha app controls all of them via my iPhone and iPad. I have no complaints.

This App provides outstanding ease of control of all zones of my three zone receiver. Allows for use of defined macros, setting party mode, Playing Pandora with feedback capability, independent zone volume control. Definitely the best of all I tested. Just wish they would enable Apple Watch functionality with it soon!!

I've tried this app on numerous occasions. It never finds my RX-V3900, which is on the network and can be seen by other devices. Manually entering the IP address doesn't help and Yamaha support provides no direction from here nor are they responsive to support requests. Denon app runs my Denon receivers without issue. I should have just stuck with Denon rather than trying Yamaha with this receiver. I’ve since moved on to a different brand. If a mfg can’t get their app right and doesn’t support it properly it bodes poorly for other areas. Goodybye Yamaha.
Love It!
by bryanlb1 on 2017/06/11 02:49
I know some say the app doesn't do much more than the remote but they are wrong. If I want to listen to music from my phone or iPad I don't even need the remote. Also, I can turn on zone two from my porch, choose the desired input, and enjoy without having to go inside and do it with the remote. Great app.
Repurposed iPad
by JamesIgoe on 2018/05/11 17:29
This app is great, works perfectly, and allows me to use an old iPad 1 as both a media device and a high quality remote for my stereo. I use it stream both NET Radio and my iTunes library, as well as fiddle with the DSP (audio processing settings) and volume. No complaints, been using for several years.
Needs ability to turn subwoofer on and off
by TXnetworkMP on 2018/09/04 02:29
Currently the only way to turn on and off the subwoofer is by going through on screen menus. When my kids are watching movies and such I have no need for the sub to be on and a quick option for this would make it all the more useable rather than the on screen menus (which won’t come up if using an app on the TV).
Was a 5 now a 3,,,Disappointed
by Stewies Buddy on 2018/02/11 23:59
I loved using app. Saved on using multiple remotes. But now,,, remote constantly automatically turns stereo on when I open an app like words and Facebook and won’t let me keep turn off connection. Very annoying While watching tv and I grab phone to play, then stereo turns on and then what is playing from phone. Please help. Disappointing :-(
Works nicely except...
by twodeuce22 on 2019/04/05 00:34
Whenever I just want to listen to zone 2 or zone 3 (and I specifically make sure zone 1 is off) after a couple songs, zone 1 starts playing if it’s not in use. I turn it off and a couple songs later, zone 1 turns itself on and starts playing again. Annoying as all get out.
Nice app to control your receiver wirelessly
by ShinKyo on 2017/12/16 16:39
I recently upgraded from an older Yamaha AV receiver with no wireless capabilities to a newer one that is supported by this app. I have been enjoying it so far. The interface might be a little bit clunky but so far, the experience has been great so far.
Dubious raison d'etre
by grandgeezer on 2017/06/04 16:21
Not sure what this app should give me (other than letting google look over my shoulder when I interact with my receiver). It does very little that the remote can't do (and obviously nothing it can't do when the receiver has a TV to present menus on). Oddly, the app will claim the TV's firmware is "up to date" (not offering a version ID) when it's not, so that establishes sort of a baseline for how much you should trust it. My advise: stick to the remote.
Thank you.
Not sure what the complaints are about
by nwitpro on 2020/01/19 18:00
Works well for me! No complaints here. Yamaha makes excellent gear, and this app has been working great for us on all iOS device. Quickly connects to our receiver to adjust volume, etc.
Much improved
by LotsOfFios on 2017/06/01 14:27
I really like the newest version. I don't see any connection problems that others report. The layout is nice, and the functionality is great. It is much easier to use than the remote and onscreen menus.
