10.18.1 stops Live TV

Since upgrading to version 10.18.1 on IOS 14.5.1 live tv programs will no longer stream. All that happens is I get a spinning wheel overlaid with a start button. I have the same issue on any iPhone or iPad running IOS 14.5.1 and DStv App 10.18.1. Please help

I love this dstv app and I have it on my iPhone, but anytime I exit the app and then restart it, all channels will be gone except from dish 100 even the catch up won’t be available, everything will just be upside Down until I re download the app and re login before it gets back to normal, then same thing when I exit the app again Please upgrade and fix errors

You delete app you reinstall it you sign in and then you view. The second attempt to view gives you a message - no content. Then you repeat whole cycle Very frustrating

Sometimes the app works perfectly with all the channels showing. But if you close the app for about 30 minutes and come back the only channel available would be the dish. What I usually do when this happens is to delete the app and reinstall it. This usually works but now when I do it, it still only shows the dish.

For over 8 months now the app has stopped working when I am in Sudan. My subscription is in Nairobi but I work in Sudan most of the time. It was working on the desktop and the app before and then it stopped. Very disappointed

Works when it feels like it, and that's not often. Buffers and stutters, then freezes constantly. Have to keep restarting it. A nightmare when viewing live sport. At times it doesn't load movie from last viewed point. Have to scrub from 0:00. Has no Currently Watching row to get you back to the movie you were watching - you have to search for it. So many more problems By 2021 standards this app is garbage and a huge source of frustration. Multichoice, do better.

Updated review. The DSTV app on Apple TV ver 1.13.2 (45) freezes while watching live TV at least once a day. The only way to fix it is to delete the app, reinstall it, log into my DSTV account to authenticate myself, then start watching. DSTV’s reply to my my first review was - “ENQUIRY REFERENCE NUMBER : 2751xxxx We really appreciate your review! Don’t forget to recommend our app to your friends.” This is laughable. Just shows that they don’t actually read the reviews, obviously do nothing about it, then send a reply that is so incorrect it’s a joke. How on earth can they still be profitable? My first review - This review is for the Now app on Apple TV. It is terrible. I have been using it for a year. In the past month I’ve had to delete the app and reinstall. When viewing a show, the bottom 1/3 of the screen keeps showing the previous screen. It’s annoying and does not go away. Another bug is where the screen splits in half and freezes completely. Nothing fixes it. Have to delete the app and reinstall. The app on Apple TV and here is missing mandatory privacy information. Come on MultiChoice. Let’s get compliant.

I’ll be watching a program on catch up through my Chrome Cast and all of a sudden it stops streaming and I get a notification saying “Sorry, there was a problem playing the video”. It’s happened multiple times in one evening. Dry frustrating when you’re trying to watch a program.

You would expect more from an app developed by one of Africa’s largest media companies. But instead what you get feels like an app someone built halfway through doing a Udemy course on iOS for the first time. There are too many issues with the app to list them all but my top picks include: - the app not being able to connect to servers on start up (ie you can’t see any content, which is umm shall we say not great for a media app) - the app not working because ‘you have exceeded your two device streaming limit’ (despite only having two devices registered in total and only having one in use...) - when watching live sport (which let’s face it is probably the only reason DStv still exists...for now) - i. The stream always ends up lagging (yeah it’s real fun to have other well built apps alerts informing you that a goal was scored a few minutes before it finally takes place on your stream) and ii. The audio always ends up way out of sync with the visuals which is thoroughly annoying - the UX is incredibly poorly thought through (why does it take so many clicks to switch channels, why can’t you easily move on to the next episode of a show) If anyone from DStv ever actually reads this, maybe you could spend less on marketing (especially advertising DSTv on DSTv channels to existing DSTv customers) and shift some of that budget to your developers so they can build something that showcases the multitude of skills we have in SA - not this borderline national embarrassment. Oh while you’re reallocating budget please fix your website functionality (especially holiday home activation because that’s even less impressive than this “app”).

Catchup content unwatchable on iPad

Many issues with catchup content streaming. After connectivity disruption, program sound plays but picture goes black. Need to exit the content to try and get it to work. When you exit and go back to content, program restarts from beginning. When you try to find your place, the stream plays without picture again. This has been happening for 6 months. The app is unusable for catchup streaming.

US residents are not able to subscribe to DSTV due to broadcasting rights not available outside of Africa. It’s really disappointing because I, for one truly enjoy African programming and sure there’s plenty more according to the reviews that feel the same way. So with that in mind, I have a question. The US Market could bring more revenue to you guys if expanded to more countries/continents. Knowing the broadcasting rights are an issue, how would your company go about getting those broadcasting rights outside of Africa to allow people like myself to subscribe? Thank you and hopefully you guys would consider expanding in the near future.

I have been experiencing this for a while now where my DStv now app does not work properly some times there is no catch feature and only certain programmes being displayed only local South African channels. I have logged out and logged back in but nothing helps.
Getting frustrated

Usually I love this app and being able to watch on the go, but lately it is starting it be unstable. Almost every week now out of nowhere and doing nothing out of the ordinary, I get a message that says I have reached my streaming limit of two devices at the same time, and I must dergister from one to continue watching. I have to go out the app entirely and wait at least an hour until I can get back in to carry on watching. This is despite me only watching through the app on one device at the time, never mind that you can have up to five devices connected. Logging out and in again or reinstalling the app doesn't work, and I just have to wait. Not sure what is going on with the stability of the app, but what's the point if you can't count on it to watch your shows.

The app is great in that I can watch anything on the go and the video quality is excellent. It is very easy to use and streams quite consistently. I just don’t know why I can’t seem to cast the app to chromecast. I constantly get the message on my tv screen; sorry, there was a problem playing the video. All the while the cast icon on the top right of my screen is still connected to chromecast. Would like any suggestions from the developer as how to resolve this. Since this is a feature the app has I am disappointed it doesn’t work as it limits what I would like to do that is the reason for my rating. I understand everyone has different uses and if one wants to primarily just stream on the phone or other handheld devices then this does just that brilliantly.

I agree with the other reviews. App is not great. Is has great potential however. Too many poor streaming experiences to my apple tv. Lots of freezing and stuttering. Wish it worked better. Also, apple tv app is still missing which is a massive gap from a development point of view. 6 May review: After the update for the previous version i could for the first time since using the app airplay an entire episode without constant buffering / freezing etc. So step in right direction. However it was inconsistent. Sometimes it worked and other times i could not even airplay anything. Lets see what this latest version does. 11 May review: Yup. Back to the old days. Cannot airply to apple tv without constant freezing / stuttering / no sound etc. Cannot even watch properly on lowest quality setting on my phone. Showmax works perfectly, maybe learn from them?

A few basics they need to get right: 1. Give people the ability to remove something from their suggested lists. I don’t want to watch Isidingo or Masterchef, give the user the functionality to remove that from their suggestions and keep it off. If I change my mind, I can go find it. 2. Improve algorithms to match shows ‘You may be interested in’. So I watch action, now I may be interested in Masterchef. I watch sport, now I may be interested in Masterchef. I watch comedy, now I may be interested in Masterchef. You get the point? If what I watch has no bearing on what you show here, then just remove this whole section because it seems more that promoted shows are put there than what I actually watch. 3. Allow users to set the picture quality and subsequent download size based on connection. For WiFi connections, I want HD but for mobile connections I want a lower quality. The user has to manually change this if they so want to. Generally, a lot of potential, definitely some easy improvements can be made which will make this an easy 4-5 Star app (from a functionality perspective).

The overall idea of the app is superb. However, the point is to have the same programs as the ones available on the decoder I suppose? This is not the case. Many shows are blocked on the app due the DSTV not having permission to show them which defeats the essence of the app. Second issue is the fact that many times they jump to the next show while the current show is still running. I guess they set the show sequence based on time no matter if the show started or ended late causing us to miss a chunk of minutes of shows.

This app was practically unusable for a few years, but now works perfectly I’d say. You can watch live tv, download to your tablet, make updates to your account, etc. as a Nigeria user. I’m not sure you can pay subscriptions via the app. Not tried that yet. This should be a 5* review, but as a frequent traveler outside the African continent, I am not able to watch anything outside Africa. That’s a BIG problem for me. Fix that and you have my 5*

You would think that naspers, as a self professed internet company, would have half an idea how to use elastic cloud servers to meet demand when everyone logs into watch a live event.... but clearly not... the app spends more time trying to buffer and change resolutions that actually showing the content that it makes the experience a complete insult to us as consumers. Trying to watch the sa vs japan game was so bad. If that is best streaming service this company has to offer I am shorting the stock first thing tomorrow morning at the opening bell. A complete travesty of an app and a service! Avoid like a jacob zuma Julius malema ethics conference!
App makes it Easy to steal DSTV

Someone had access to my login details and has set up 3 devices under my account without my permission. I keep removing the devices but as the app never asks you to login (even AFTER password has been changed to a new one). I have no way of preventing the theft of my DSTV. Cannot believe our privacy and security of our accounts are treated so poorly and that DSTV makes it so easy for people to connect for free! As long as they never log out they can continue to connect previously paid devices to my account. Mind boggling that DSTV programming allows this.

While the availability of streaming TV on demand is important, Multichoice have still not addressed issues previously raised on the crash of the DSTV Now service (2nd week of May). After down loading this app on my iPad and Apple TV post the press release there is constant freezing and buffering. The error message of something went wrong please try again later is the only thing that seems to work.

I love this dstv app and I have it on my iPhone, but anytime I exit the app and then restart it, all channels will be gone except from dish 100 even the catch up won’t be available, everything will just be upside Down until I re download the app and re login before it gets back to normal, then same thing when I exit the app again Please upgrade and fix errors

Let’s start with my biggest gripe - and this is a problem with all of DSTV’s digital offerings, including Showmax - why on earth must we be limited to running the app on a small number of devices? With intricate rules governing how often devices can be added or removed? Just do what Netflix and Prime TV and so on do: Limit the number of concurrent streams to two or three, but don’t limit the number of devices please. Other than that, the ability to remove items from suggestions would be great. Overall the app is getting better and better, though it lacks just a little bit of polish.

I lived my whole life in Nigeria and recently just moved to the US and I want to keep watching the Nigerian shows I usually watch and also the Bollywood shows on Zee world. Now that being said I tried to sign up so I could continue watching my beloved shows, instead of me chilling right now and watching Zee world, I find out that it’s not available for people outside of Africa and that is extremely heartbreaking and disappointing

Catchup content unwatchable on iPad

Many issues with catchup content streaming. After connectivity disruption, program sound plays but picture goes black. Need to exit the content to try and get it to work. When you exit and go back to content, program restarts from beginning. When you try to find your place, the stream plays without picture again. This has been happening for 6 months. The app is unusable for catchup streaming.

This app doesn’t work. The servers are permanently down. I can’t reset my password. I’ve been unable to use the app for the past month now. I’ve called in to the call centre multiple times. The agents are aware the app isn’t working and they can’t help. It should be taken down until it has proper support and it actually works. I should be getting a refund for the time I was unable to use it.

I’ve spent hours waiting for someone to assist on LiveChat and problem is still not solved. It worked erratically for a while, now refuses to stream via app or browser when on VPN. I travel a lot and it’s hugely frustrating to pay all that subscription and not have access to shows etc when outside the country. What’s going on??

Even after being told that my previous issues with the app will be fixed with the April update, I am still having issues the with video freezing when using airplay. So the problem occurs when the video stops to buffer and as soon as it starts playing again the sounds continues but the video is frozen.

Sometimes the app works perfectly with all the channels showing. But if you close the app for about 30 minutes and come back the only channel available would be the dish. What I usually do when this happens is to delete the app and reinstall it. This usually works but now when I do it, it still only shows the dish.

Works when it feels like it, and that's not often. Buffers and stutters, then freezes constantly. Have to keep restarting it. A nightmare when viewing live sport. At times it doesn't load movie from last viewed point. Have to scrub from 0:00. Has no Currently Watching row to get you back to the movie you were watching - you have to search for it. So many more problems By 2021 standards this app is garbage and a huge source of frustration. Multichoice, do better.

Updated review. The DSTV app on Apple TV ver 1.13.2 (45) freezes while watching live TV at least once a day. The only way to fix it is to delete the app, reinstall it, log into my DSTV account to authenticate myself, then start watching. DSTV’s reply to my my first review was - “ENQUIRY REFERENCE NUMBER : 2751xxxx We really appreciate your review! Don’t forget to recommend our app to your friends.” This is laughable. Just shows that they don’t actually read the reviews, obviously do nothing about it, then send a reply that is so incorrect it’s a joke. How on earth can they still be profitable? My first review - This review is for the Now app on Apple TV. It is terrible. I have been using it for a year. In the past month I’ve had to delete the app and reinstall. When viewing a show, the bottom 1/3 of the screen keeps showing the previous screen. It’s annoying and does not go away. Another bug is where the screen splits in half and freezes completely. Nothing fixes it. Have to delete the app and reinstall. The app on Apple TV and here is missing mandatory privacy information. Come on MultiChoice. Let’s get compliant.

You would expect more from an app developed by one of Africa’s largest media companies. But instead what you get feels like an app someone built halfway through doing a Udemy course on iOS for the first time. There are too many issues with the app to list them all but my top picks include: - the app not being able to connect to servers on start up (ie you can’t see any content, which is umm shall we say not great for a media app) - the app not working because ‘you have exceeded your two device streaming limit’ (despite only having two devices registered in total and only having one in use...) - when watching live sport (which let’s face it is probably the only reason DStv still exists...for now) - i. The stream always ends up lagging (yeah it’s real fun to have other well built apps alerts informing you that a goal was scored a few minutes before it finally takes place on your stream) and ii. The audio always ends up way out of sync with the visuals which is thoroughly annoying - the UX is incredibly poorly thought through (why does it take so many clicks to switch channels, why can’t you easily move on to the next episode of a show) If anyone from DStv ever actually reads this, maybe you could spend less on marketing (especially advertising DSTv on DSTv channels to existing DSTv customers) and shift some of that budget to your developers so they can build something that showcases the multitude of skills we have in SA - not this borderline national embarrassment. Oh while you’re reallocating budget please fix your website functionality (especially holiday home activation because that’s even less impressive than this “app”).

Catchup content unwatchable on iPad

Many issues with catchup content streaming. After connectivity disruption, program sound plays but picture goes black. Need to exit the content to try and get it to work. When you exit and go back to content, program restarts from beginning. When you try to find your place, the stream plays without picture again. This has been happening for 6 months. The app is unusable for catchup streaming.

US residents are not able to subscribe to DSTV due to broadcasting rights not available outside of Africa. It’s really disappointing because I, for one truly enjoy African programming and sure there’s plenty more according to the reviews that feel the same way. So with that in mind, I have a question. The US Market could bring more revenue to you guys if expanded to more countries/continents. Knowing the broadcasting rights are an issue, how would your company go about getting those broadcasting rights outside of Africa to allow people like myself to subscribe? Thank you and hopefully you guys would consider expanding in the near future.

I have been experiencing this for a while now where my DStv now app does not work properly some times there is no catch feature and only certain programmes being displayed only local South African channels. I have logged out and logged back in but nothing helps.
Getting frustrated

Usually I love this app and being able to watch on the go, but lately it is starting it be unstable. Almost every week now out of nowhere and doing nothing out of the ordinary, I get a message that says I have reached my streaming limit of two devices at the same time, and I must dergister from one to continue watching. I have to go out the app entirely and wait at least an hour until I can get back in to carry on watching. This is despite me only watching through the app on one device at the time, never mind that you can have up to five devices connected. Logging out and in again or reinstalling the app doesn't work, and I just have to wait. Not sure what is going on with the stability of the app, but what's the point if you can't count on it to watch your shows.
Great app apart from the inability to cast from my iPhone to Chromecast

The app is great in that I can watch anything on the go and the video quality is excellent. It is very easy to use and streams quite consistently. I just don’t know why I can’t seem to cast the app to chromecast. I constantly get the message on my tv screen; sorry, there was a problem playing the video. All the while the cast icon on the top right of my screen is still connected to chromecast. Would like any suggestions from the developer as how to resolve this. Since this is a feature the app has I am disappointed it doesn’t work as it limits what I would like to do that is the reason for my rating. I understand everyone has different uses and if one wants to primarily just stream on the phone or other handheld devices then this does just that brilliantly.

I agree with the other reviews. App is not great. Is has great potential however. Too many poor streaming experiences to my apple tv. Lots of freezing and stuttering. Wish it worked better. Also, apple tv app is still missing which is a massive gap from a development point of view. 6 May review: After the update for the previous version i could for the first time since using the app airplay an entire episode without constant buffering / freezing etc. So step in right direction. However it was inconsistent. Sometimes it worked and other times i could not even airplay anything. Lets see what this latest version does. 11 May review: Yup. Back to the old days. Cannot airply to apple tv without constant freezing / stuttering / no sound etc. Cannot even watch properly on lowest quality setting on my phone. Showmax works perfectly, maybe learn from them?
Lacking functionality

A few basics they need to get right: 1. Give people the ability to remove something from their suggested lists. I don’t want to watch Isidingo or Masterchef, give the user the functionality to remove that from their suggestions and keep it off. If I change my mind, I can go find it. 2. Improve algorithms to match shows ‘You may be interested in’. So I watch action, now I may be interested in Masterchef. I watch sport, now I may be interested in Masterchef. I watch comedy, now I may be interested in Masterchef. You get the point? If what I watch has no bearing on what you show here, then just remove this whole section because it seems more that promoted shows are put there than what I actually watch. 3. Allow users to set the picture quality and subsequent download size based on connection. For WiFi connections, I want HD but for mobile connections I want a lower quality. The user has to manually change this if they so want to. Generally, a lot of potential, definitely some easy improvements can be made which will make this an easy 4-5 Star app (from a functionality perspective).

The overall idea of the app is superb. However, the point is to have the same programs as the ones available on the decoder I suppose? This is not the case. Many shows are blocked on the app due the DSTV not having permission to show them which defeats the essence of the app. Second issue is the fact that many times they jump to the next show while the current show is still running. I guess they set the show sequence based on time no matter if the show started or ended late causing us to miss a chunk of minutes of shows.

This app was practically unusable for a few years, but now works perfectly I’d say. You can watch live tv, download to your tablet, make updates to your account, etc. as a Nigeria user. I’m not sure you can pay subscriptions via the app. Not tried that yet. This should be a 5* review, but as a frequent traveler outside the African continent, I am not able to watch anything outside Africa. That’s a BIG problem for me. Fix that and you have my 5*

You would think that naspers, as a self professed internet company, would have half an idea how to use elastic cloud servers to meet demand when everyone logs into watch a live event.... but clearly not... the app spends more time trying to buffer and change resolutions that actually showing the content that it makes the experience a complete insult to us as consumers. Trying to watch the sa vs japan game was so bad. If that is best streaming service this company has to offer I am shorting the stock first thing tomorrow morning at the opening bell. A complete travesty of an app and a service! Avoid like a jacob zuma Julius malema ethics conference!
App makes it Easy to steal DSTV

Someone had access to my login details and has set up 3 devices under my account without my permission. I keep removing the devices but as the app never asks you to login (even AFTER password has been changed to a new one). I have no way of preventing the theft of my DSTV. Cannot believe our privacy and security of our accounts are treated so poorly and that DSTV makes it so easy for people to connect for free! As long as they never log out they can continue to connect previously paid devices to my account. Mind boggling that DSTV programming allows this.

While the availability of streaming TV on demand is important, Multichoice have still not addressed issues previously raised on the crash of the DSTV Now service (2nd week of May). This is paid for, as part of your premium package, but DSTV do not offer a service to meet your demands for viewing when you want and have a monopoly on this, which is not fair (I have missed live sporting events due to DSTV Now service crashes, and nothing has been done to make up for this). As such their customer service and reliability make me rate this a 1.

After down loading this app on my iPad and Apple TV post the press release there is constant freezing and buffering. The error message of something went wrong please try again later is the only thing that seems to work.

I love this dstv app and I have it on my iPhone, but anytime I exit the app and then restart it, all channels will be gone except from dish 100 even the catch up won’t be available, everything will just be upside Down until I re download the app and re login before it gets back to normal, then same thing when I exit the app again Please upgrade and fix errors

...not quite there yet, either. Let’s start with my biggest gripe - and this is a problem with all of DSTV’s digital offerings, including Showmax - why on earth must we be limited to running the app on a small number of devices? With intricate rules governing how often devices can be added or removed? Just do what Netflix and Prime TV and so on do: Limit the number of concurrent streams to two or three, but don’t limit the number of devices please. Other than that, the ability to remove items from suggestions would be great. Overall the app is getting better and better, though it lacks just a little bit of polish.

I lived my whole life in Nigeria and recently just moved to the US and I want to keep watching the Nigerian shows I usually watch and also the Bollywood shows on Zee world. Now that being said I tried to sign up so I could continue watching my beloved shows, instead of me chilling right now and watching Zee world, I find out that it’s not available for people outside of Africa and that is extremely heartbreaking and disappointing

App works well, really love it. The only thing I have an issue with is that the video quality option doesn’t work, when I set it in both the profile and video it will always pushes out the max quality which kills the download speed.

It’s very annoying it takes 5hrs to load yet nothing happens so i go from 11pm-5am then 5am-11am and 11am-5pm keep going round the clock and wasting my data please i need to know why i haven’t been able to watch anything on the app for 3months adding the fact that it won’t stop downloading or loading round the clock please fix it.

Why don’t I have the remote recording button on my app. I used to have in the past but now I don’t. I tried deleting app and its data, logging in again, etc but it does not appear. I am losing money paying access fee as this is one feature I need. Advice. For this and a crappy customer care, I give a two.

This app doesn’t work. The servers are permanently down. I can’t reset my password. I’ve been unable to use the app for the past month now. I’ve called in to the call centre multiple times. The agents are aware the app isn’t working and they can’t help. It should be taken down until it has proper support and it actually works. I should be getting a refund for the time I was unable to use it.

I’ve spent hours waiting for someone to assist on LiveChat and problem is still not solved. It worked erratically for a while, now refuses to stream via app or browser when on VPN. I travel a lot and it’s hugely frustrating to pay all that subscription and not have access to shows etc when outside the country. What’s going on??

I will start watching something and then all of a sudden there will come a message that says “only streaming on 2 devices allowed” where I am the only one streaming. Or another pop up in the middle of an episode “we’re sorry, something went wrong, please wait and try again in a few minutes” Pretty useless app. The problems just never stops with the app.

Ever since the updated version , I can watch anything, it buffers every 4 secs ! It is an absolute frustrating app right now ! I called customer care thinking it was my account but no! I changed my Wifi network thinking that was the issue but no !Fix this or revert back to the old version so we can at least watch for 5 mins without any buffering 👎

Video Freezing and slow streaming

Even after being told that my previous issues with the app will be fixed with the April update, I am still having issues the with video freezing when using airplay. So the problem occurs when the video stops to buffer and as soon as it starts playing again the sounds continues but the video is frozen.

Sometimes the app works perfectly with all the channels showing. But if you close the app for about 30 minutes and come back the only channel available would be the dish. What I usually do when this happens is to delete the app and reinstall it. This usually works but now when I do it, it still only shows the dish.

I’ll be watching a program on catch up through my Chrome Cast and all of a sudden it stops streaming and I get a notification saying “Sorry, there was a problem playing the video”. It’s happened multiple times in one evening. Dry frustrating when you’re trying to watch a program.
