No comics?
by Culprit c on 2020/02/29 00:24
Selecting sections is OK but no section is shown for neighbors so what do you select for the comics section? And how about Sat when it's in the main section? Help?
Keeps crashing
by mc394 on 2018/07/10 13:24
I love this app… I have been using it daily for several years. Really like that app looks just like the actual paper version. Love to be able to move from section to section. But in the last few weeks every time I try to read on my iPad mini, the app just shuts down. Very frustrating. Please fix whatever bugs are going on so that I can read the whole paper.
Frustrating
by Taj1971 on 2018/07/08 12:05
When it works it’s great. Unfortunately it constantly crashes. They say they are aware and it’s being addressed but still no improvement.
Needs a few tweaks
by luginn on 2018/04/08 16:00
This app needs a search engine so we can find articles that appear in the print version. Also should offer a section to find columnists, like Patricia Babcock McGraw and Burt Constable.
Constant crashes from flash Ads
by nm0m0 on 2017/10/21 20:53
App keep crashing every time it appears to present a new ad graphic. Not worth the aggravation. Will get my news elsewhere.

Terrible
by jclark211 on 2017/08/25 12:39
I didn't think this app could get worse but it has. Today, 8/25/17, as I write this at 7:30 a.m., the opening page "Top Stories" does not contain a single new story. Each of the 25 articles listed is at least three (3) days old, all dating back to 8/21 and 8/22. Pathetic! And as I've stated on previous reviews, the overall content is poor. Also, the app doesn't allow finger pinches to increase the size of text or photos.
Ok
by Skyman_Seven on 2017/05/13 16:26
Ok for overview. Synopsis of the printed version.
A Waste
by SavvyReader-1 on 2017/05/02 11:58
I was disappointed at turning the pages of my actual newspaper to find limited information in the "Recent home and property sales" there was a general, NOT a specific URL. I opened the app and was further disappointed. There is NO search function. There was NO neighborhood section, that intuitively sent me to the content I was looking for. I looked in each of the sections and found another disappointment, the Cook County area "had no content in the feed"! A complete waste of time!
Easy to use
by Mammajane on 2017/04/07 00:37
Like the app. It is easy to use and reasonable to navigate. Allows us to occasionally check out what's up back where we lived for so long.

Especially great for an Arlington Heights resident. I like the local, global, and Chicago news.
Big improvement
by Walmartwilly on 2016/07/31 13:18
This version is a big improvement over the last version. It's once again a pleasure to read the Herald using their app. Nice work.
Terrible
by Pebav on 2016/06/17 12:18
New version came out a month ago and was ok, not as good as the Tribune and other newspapers but ok. Recently however it's been awful. Can't get stories to "pop out" and when i try to expand the font size with my thumb and forefinger, it's blurry so, in effect, I can't read the paper. For the exorbitant price of this subscription, the Daily Herald should feel ashamed.
Bring back the old app
by Gregory K A on 2016/06/14 04:25
Just useless for local news. No reason to have it.
Next to being worthless
by JohnM57 on 2016/05/27 19:46
This is the first review I've written that I've given a one star rating. This app should be titled, "Selected Articles for Anyone". I originally subscribed to the Daily Herald paper version for seven days a week. I had frequent delivery issues so I changed the subscription to Friday, Saturday and Sunday and the digital subscription for Monday through Thursday. The original digital subscription subscription using the Olive Software was terrific. It was like reading the print version on the iPad. This app doesn't include many of the stories in the print addition. I don't even feel like I am reading the beloved Daily Herald print addition. There is no sense in reading the print addition at the barbershop and expecting to finish it with the app. I will stop my digital subscription very soon because this app is so disappointing. Shame on you Daily Herald staff. You really blew this one.

Great app for a Great news source

The Daily Hearld is the best newspaper in the north and west Chicago suburbs, and the app carries on the tradition.
Pretty good
by RinalaA on 2015/12/13 15:38
It's easy to navigate and you can read 10 articles for free each month. I'm guessing you have to pay for an e-subscription for full access, but that could definitely be more clear. I wouldn't mind paying for one but you should be able to do it from the app, or say how to do so. I like that you can still read all the headlines even after you hit the 10 stories, which is all I do half the time anyway. I don't have a problem with the ads- that's how they make money to stay in business.
Annoying design; focus is on flashing ads
by DEJ-II on 2015/10/31 13:25
The e-edition was useful, as it presented a digital version of the paper. This app is terrible! Good luck finding what you want; trying to dodge intrusive ads is like playing an unpleasant video game.

I have been using this app for about a year now. This is an Awesome app and a great newspaper . Just never had time to write a review because it was always being used. :) Easy to read, loads quickly, with a unique intuitive way of accessing articles from different sections of the paper.
Ad placement annoying and one really frustrating bug
by Nightskyflash on 2015/04/09 22:48
The app is generally functional and easy to use. However they place a moving ad that keeps moving down in the middle of the stories as you scroll down. Super annoying. And now there's a bug that requires you to re-login every time you access the app.
Nice App could be better
by Stevef544 on 2015/03/30 01:10
App works fine would be nice if ad automatically went away after a few seconds when first opened. Emailing articles should be simpler.
Good local info
by Vernon Hillsian on 2015/03/18 17:16

Herald app
by Stedsta on 2012/09/15 15:01
I cannot even get this to download. I tried numerous times and it wanted so much insignificant info and then kept rejecting it that I had to reset my iPad password. I pay $4.00 for the online version too. What gives Paddock Publication? I will stick with the paper delivered daily and forget the extra monthly fee next time the bill comes due. I wanted to give 0 stars but it would not let me submit until I put in a rating. You need to clean up this act because I actually like your paper and your reporters.
Worthless
by Insomniak on 2012/09/12 12:35
I can view the site for free and get all the High School sports info or pay $8/month and get little to know High School sports. Already cancelled.
Great publication - TERRIBLE performing app
by Samhuff50 on 2012/06/18 11:53
I've communicated with several IT / President at the Herald with promises that their app provider is working on improving all issues - biggest being app won't open and you have to delete the app several times a week for it to open - that conversation has been on going for a year. I would suggest staying away from this app until they make an effort to resolve their issues. Not worth the frustration.

$8.00 a month, are you serious?!?
by 34dutchman on 2012/05/27 14:20
So I download this "free" app, and as soon as I try to read the first article, it prompts me to purchase an $8.00/month subscription for the content. Are you serious?!? I can get the news from you on my phone for free, plus I can get the Tribune, Sun-Times, and the USA Today for free on my iPad. Just another example of a greedy company trying to nickel and dime the consumer!!

8 bucks/month for horrible grammar and spelling??? Are you serious?
by JimKasIL on 2011/11/24 14:10
So I downloaded this "free" app to check it out after abandoning the Tribune app due to its constant crashes. I open the business section today and see the following headline " Consumer Reports puts out maughty and nice list out for shopping". "maughty"??? Using "out" twice? Is your editor a fifth grader? You want 8 bucks/month for this? Not from me. Deleting the app as soon as I finish this review.
Fix the fix
by Joemissy on 2011/11/11 02:37
You have managed to take an okay app, and turned it into an unresponsive app that crashes all the time. I am very disappointed, especially since this costs about $8.00 a month. Unless something changes, I won't be renewing for a third month.
Must be the pre-beta version
by donbie on 2011/09/19 18:33
Load times very slow (40 seconds), page turns ver slow (5 seconds), navigation poor. These are the good features as the app most often does not work. DH should look at any other periodical app to see how it should be done. (I can download an entire issue of the Economist in about 5 seconds with sub second page turns, as a typical example). The editor/CEO tok great pains to explain why they had to charge for digital content...can he now give us a refund for this extraordinarily poor attempt. Do not begin to think about paying for this at this version level. Extraordinarily embarrassing for DH. This is the poorest app I have ever seen. I hope DH has not paid their contractor. I did see 2 five star ratings with no content...Not possible.

Hey Daily Herald, here's a thought. Check with newspapers that charge for their digital edition AND give you the option to download the edition to your iPad. You should be able to offer the same service. Print size on articles too small to read even when you enlarge to max. This is a waste of time.

No comics?

Terrible
by jclark211 on 2017/08/25 12:39
I didn't think this app could get worse but it has.

Good app
by JKayB. on 2016/09/25 14:37
Hate the ad that pops up the second I open the app and the sensationalist ads about Kelly Ripa and Ellen Degeneres insult me. The news content and navigation are great.

Terrible
by Pebav on 2016/06/17 12:18
New version came out a month ago and was ok, not as good as the Tribune and other newspapers but ok. Recently however it's been awful. Can't get stories to "pop out" and when i try to expand the font size with my thumb and forefinger, it's blurry so, in effect, I can't read the paper. For the exorbitant price of this subscription, the Daily Herald should feel ashamed.

I reinstalled this app just recently because I liked the easy accessibility and convenience of reading brief local stories on the go. I am now unable to read the local headlines unless I create an account. DH, why did you do this? ...And why are you wanting people to create accounts and give you access to our email accounts? I'm not comfortable with creating an account for I fear DH will be like all others and send unwanted solicitations via: email. Thanks, but no thanks folks.

I would suggest staying away from this app until they make an effort to resolve their issues. Not worth the frustration.

Unless something changes, I won't be renewing for a third month.

by donbie on 2011/09/19 18:33
Load times very slow (40 seconds), page turns ver slow (5 seconds), navigation poor.

Never completes loading
by Sad cust on 2012/02/23 13:00
The app worked ok for a couple days know it never finishes loading sections so it is worthless. Removed and reinstalled, still doesn't finish loading. Downloaded the daily herald iphone app to my ipad and works ok. Not very nice on the ipad but at least i get to read the news. :(
Fix the fix
by Joemissy on 2011/11/11 02:37
You have managed to take an okay app, and turned it into an unresponsive app that crashes all the time. I am very disappointed, especially since this costs about $8.00 a month. Unless something changes, I won't be renewing for a third month.
Concise and well organized
by Runninlong on 2014/11/21 15:06
Easy to navigate.
Good local info
by Vernon Hillsian on 2015/03/18 17:16
Good information for local neighborhoods around Chicago. The app functions well. The pop-up ad at launch can be difficult to dismiss.
Fix this please
by Phuckin' Phil on 2015/07/11 11:41
The app signs you out after every time you close it. It did this a few months ago but then stopped now it's doing it again. Fix this please it's really annoying!
Good app
by JKayB. on 2016/09/25 14:37
Hate the ad that pops up the second I open the app and the sensationalist ads about Kelly Ripa and Ellen Degeneres insult me. The news content and navigation are great.
Excellent news coverage & nice clean app
by Stainless900 on 2014/08/17 19:10
Excellent and clean easy to use app
Great app
by BillyKoz1234 on 2016/09/22 17:52
Especially great for an Arlington Heights resident. I like the local, global, and Chicago news.
Where is the replica view?
by jubiladopkc on 2013/11/03 12:10
I liked - and want - the replica view on my iPhone. I used to be able to get it. Why is it no longer available? I am still a 7-day subscriber.
Bad do not download
by Elgin boy on 2012/10/22 02:59
This is just a place card for a paid subscription, at least with the sun time and Tribune apps you can read some news!
Great app for a Great news source
by TheHammerReview on 2016/01/11 03:39
The Daily Hearld is the best newspaper in the north and west Chicago suburbs, and the app carries on the tradition.
Horrible
by JWhtn on 2012/03/13 12:37
I have been a subscriber to the DH for 20 years. Best sports section in Chicago. But your app is horrible! It crashes daily. I will probably cancel entire subscription as it is not worth the hassle
Bring back the old app
by Gregory K A on 2016/06/14 04:25
Just useless for local news. No reason to have it.
Worthless
by Insomniak on 2012/09/12 12:35
I can view the site for free and get all the High School sports info or pay $8/month and get little to know High School sports. Already cancelled.

Buggy, not free to read only to down load. Total waste of time.

by Moose1149 on 2016/02/13 20:46
New format is nice but where is the "Sports on Radio & TV"?

by lefse4me1 on 2015/01/01 16:29
DEGRADING! Each time you open the app, you must cancel the ad! 😕
