Description
Instantly reach the people in your life—for free. messenger is just like texting, but you don't have to pay for every message (it works with your data plan). Not just for facebook friends: message people in your phone book and just enter a phone number to add a new contact. group chats: Create groups for the people you message most. Name them, set group photos and keep them all in one place. Photos and videos: Shoot videos and snap selfies or other photos right from the app and send them with one tap. Free calls: Talk as long as you want, even with people in other countries. (Calls are free over Wi-Fi. Otherwise, standard data charges apply.) Even more ways to message: Bring your conversations to life with stickers. Preview your camera roll photos and videos without leaving the conversation--then choose the perfect ones to send. Record voice messages when you have more to say. Extra features: Know when people have seen your messages. Forward messages or photos to people who weren't in the conversation. Search for people and groups to quickly get back to them. Turn on location to let people know when you're nearby. See who's available on messenger and who's active on facebook. Turn off notifications when you're working, sleeping or just need a break. Stay logged in so you never miss a message.

New update
by Lori Sturm on 2015/03/03 13:21
My teens share my phone and only one person can use messenger. We have tried everything to sign my son out so other people can check their messages and it won't let us.
The FBI and NSA use this!
by ChristianArea12 on 2015/03/03 12:49
They spy on you and everyone who is using this app knows it. Facebook tried to get everyone to use a separate app just for messages and we deny them! Don't let them spy on you. You have rights know them!
Ridiculous
by Sammie1228 on 2015/03/03 12:26
This is absolutely 100% the dumbest thing ever even thought of. Why would I need a separate app to talk to people on a different app? I don't have room on my phone for that on my phone, but even if I did I wouldn't download it because it's idiotic. I wish they would change this back
Forced to install app
by Njasonhall on 2015/03/03 09:02
I deleted this app because it wouldn't allow me to delete people that I had deleted from my facebook. Had to re install just to be able to private message people. There should be a way to message FB contacts without having to download another app. Thinking about just deleting facebook all together because of this.

by Jeff22* on 2015/03/03 04:52

Horrible
by Yo.Sup.Homie. on 2015/03/03 04:29
This app is absolutely horrible. I liked being able to message THROUGH Facebook. There's no reason that we need another app to take up storage to do something that one app did just fine. Most people have a burning passion towards this app, but if we want to talk to our friends I guess we have to keep it.
No need for this ... it's Pointless !!!
by Willst3r on 2015/03/03 04:03

Broken, nonfunctional
by Thalesian on 2015/03/03 00:51
Crashes and/or perpetual login screen. iPhone 6 with iOS 8.1.3 If you are going to try and make a stand alone app for functionality already offered, you must improve performance at a minimum. Right now you don't. I use your excellent Papers app - it is easier to use for messages compared to this one. And that was when it worked and didn't sign me out all the time.
Notification Symbol Needed
by CherryCin on 2015/03/03 00:27
Good app but there should be a notification symbol that pops up when a friend sends a message, like on fb when you get a notification about other things.

I was already reluctant to download messenger because how the Facebook app forced me to do so. But I finally gave in. NOW you cannot use the app unless you leave notifications on with ALL settings enabled. Banners, Lock Screen appearance. The moment you disable these settings the app stops letting you use it. How presumptuous can you be?If I have notifications on I get them constantly. Delete delete delete. Worst. App. Ever.

Don't force us!!
by Chilechatter on 2015/03/02 09:13
Really annoying how you can't access your messages in the Facebook app anymore. It just takes up more space in your phone for nothing. The app itself isn't great and when you're in the FB app it's slow to load your messages because it needs to switch apps when you select messages. Definitely not worth downloading if you do not use FB messages often.
Pointless
by shutupkasey on 2015/03/02 07:12
There is no good reason to move the messages out of the native Facebook app. I'm not going through the fuss of installing another app that I'll hardly use for one feature. Why not just put messages back into the app? People who want a cleaner messages app can download this, and people who don't need one can use the regular app. No more uselessness.

by Meanderiery on 2015/03/02 05:42
I had the mobile version of this app for quite some time. Even when I set my visibility to invisible, I still had friends using messenger app me when it was unwelcome. The mute feature did not keep them from contacting me, it just shut the little alert noise off. The delete feature did not remove them from my messenger contacts it just deleted the conversation. I am sure that these problems are addressed somewhere, but I didn't find it. I have instant message apps that don't make me work so hard to maintain my privacy. I found that even though my Facebook settings were definitely on private or close friends only, anyone could message me, and did. It was either delete messenger or quit Facebook after a while. I don't think that's what you're aiming for here. The call quality was so so. For a brief time it was a better alternative to Skype. However, Skype came back to its usual level of performance after a while. I still found that the messenger voice system on Facebook was iffy. Convenient, but really iffy. I find it entirely creepy that the chat function is now gone from Facebook and messenger is being imposed.

So to begin with, it already took me a long time to download the Fb messenger app because I didn't the purpose of having a separate app for an app that was already capable to access your messages. I only downloaded because I couldn't use my FB app without the constant reminder to download the messenger and I actually liked it for the most part. However what I do not like is that it you are able to turn your messenger off so that "you don't show as active to others" but yet I still show active to others when I'm online. Wth (-_-)

by Angelz99 on 2015/03/01 20:30

Messages only sending half the time
by Brentbdk on 2015/03/01 15:42
IPhone 5s ios7.1.1 and whenever I try to send a message sometimes it won't get delivered until hours later. This morning a friend messaged me, I replied only seconds later and then the message would only send but not be delivered. I'm getting tired of people thinking I saw their message and didn't respond. Especially when there's nothing I can do about it. Never had issues before you guys implemented the new system for delivering. Please fix. Will fix review when fixed. Thank you.

Why can't messenger be in the Facebook app? And all these pop ups asking me to activate push notifications and locations. I just don't want to, so stop asking me. Leave me ALONE with that nonsense. It's cheap, and if it carries on for much longer in deleting the apps and deactivate my account in protest.
Deleting You
by Ddjdiixixjsjshshdhshjdhsh on 2015/03/01 05:01
Messenger can do a lot better by being more quick with messages. Another way it could get better is when someone wants to look at old messages they don't have to scroll up you just put the month it was on in a search box in the chat room between the people. But besides that messenger is getting really mad because the calls that people make to me don't go threw and it only says when I already missed the call and it also doesn't show that I have messenger to my Facebook friends so I decided to delete you because you clearly aren't gonna get better.

The Truth
by tariq5281 on 2014/08/09 16:53
Facebook: a way to keep in touch with my family. I rarely use it, and was messaging my cousin. When I moved from PC to mobile, I noticed that Facebook was asking me to download Facebook Messenger. Now, I love talking to my family, so I decided,"Sure, I'll download it." When it finished downloading, I was entranced. All the features are perfect, from the messages that never go through to the constant app crashes. This app is better than snapchat. Now I can concurrently open Messenger from my homescreen, and after constant refreshing, see my new messages. I find how long it takes to load great anyways, because I can spend more time contemplating how amazing the app is. Imagine all the bugs you saw with the Facebook app, and double them. I find it fun making a bingo board based on all the bugs listed on the internet, and see how many I get. I play the game with my family, and got bingo three times! All in all, this app is the perfect way to keep in touch, especially when you haven't opened it for months and think nobody messaged you, and then upon opening it, you find that the notifications don't work! So it's like a nice little surprise every time. Thank you Facebook, for forcing this upon us as a mother would force an ugly outfit upon her twin sons because it matches.
Groupthink 101 for the sheeple..
by Mateofresh11 on 2014/08/12 09:42
Why are you mad? Because 'everyone' else is right? Fight the beast! Have you geniuses ever thought for yourselves, past the ideals you've allowed to be force-feed into your pigeon-holed existence? Oh so big brother is after ya huh?Someone is recording my actions aren't they! What are they doing with this... DATA! Making your lives better you Pied Piper following losers! Your in the beginning of an amazing new era on this planet, embrace it! Your the descendants of Luddites who destroyed agricultural and manufacturing machinery during the Industrial Revolution. If you knew how to use your iPhones properly, you'd know that having Messenger as a separate entity, is much more efficient for both your phone and you! Messenger is a brilliant app that has little to do with fb past the fact that it was introduced as an extension within the fb app; which is the only problem with it. There is no question that it's the BEST available app for group communication. This holds true for all types of group messenging; business, family, clubs, organizations, big brother conspiracy wizards, and even the highly educated snap-chatters 🔫 The only reason your being 'forced' to download and use it is because if giving an option, you'd never change. I hope you 1-starers know the definition of complacency..
Terrible and inconvenient, wastes memory
by Mariposa Immortale on 2014/10/19 17:27
I like messaging from within my Facebook app. I like my chat heads. I like being able to browse news feed simultaneously while working with messages. I also need to save memory space on my phone- I don't want to download extra apps to clutter my phone, use up more memory, and make connecting with Facebook friends less streamlined than the current messaging system. To put it frankly, I hate your idea of a separate app. I don't care that it's faster, it's less streamlined and multitasking between multiple apps is for the birds... That actually makes the experience much slower! Hate a separate app... And hate isn't a strong enough word. Fine if you want to offer a separate app for those who want it but don't force the rest of us to switch over. I will pull my Facebook account and stick with google + if you don't give us the old way back! Oh and I want to be able to turn vibrating alerts off on messaging for both apps! Update: have been using it a couple weeks now... Still hate it!... Update been a couple months and I still hate it for all the same reasons. It's not seamless multitasking between FB and messenger, hogs extra memory and I liked the old chat heads format much better. I could care less about making phone calls for free in the app or messages counting as text... I'd rather have my chats integrated back inside my FB app than any other feature you can throw at me! And fwiw, FB phone calls are terrible quality!
Solid update
by Daveroo92 on 2013/12/26 10:24
I just downloaded this app and I really like the new update. It has a very similar feeling to iMessage but you can literally message anyone on this when you have their cell phone number and it's attached to their facebook account. So essentially anyone can use it in contrast to apple only products being able to use iMessage. I was drawn to this app because it offers voice messaging, and a variety of emoji sticker options that google hangouts doesn't offer in their ipad apps which is what I use for my main communication .this app offers all of that here. The app overall is really snappy and fast and very simple. I like how it's not connected to regular facebook at all. So there's no annoying facebook profiles or news feed to be forced to look at. It almost feels like your not using facebook. However, the only serious negative for this app is that not too many people have started using this yet. So sometimes my messages just go their facebook inboxes where they have to log in to see what I said which is a lot slower than regular texting. So as of now it's almost impossible to use this app for all my messaging and calling needs with friends. It's a shame facebook did away with sms message. It's not here anymore so I have to use your facebook account to use this app. That's very annoying.
Perfect For Me

This app does exactly what I need it to do right now. I can still keep in touch with all of my friends and co-workers even though I don't have phone service right now. I don't care for all of the hype that's going on right now about Facebook being able to access my phone's data and import devices. We're all being watched and having data collected about us in someway or another anyways. For the engineers I would love to see, in the very near future or next version, the ability to control how my messages appear on my lock screen just like iMessage does. I can control the preview settings. I don't know if Apple allows you but I would really prefer it if who ever just happens to glance at my phone they won't be able to see whatever private Facebook message was just sent to me when my phone lights up. Since you guys came out with this app and I noticed that a pretty clear preview of my message appears on my lock screen, I've been waiting for you guys to change if that preview appears or not. Even if just told me who the message was from or if I had a message at all it would be great. I understand there is no privacy between you and I but at least let me keep my privacy on my phone from everyone else. Thanks, Facebook Fan
Please do something about this app!

I hate this app. It doesn't make sense to me why FB would force people to leave the Facebook app in order to view their FB messages. I also don't think it is very convenient to have to delete the messenger app and reload it in order to change or switch accounts and see messages from those accounts. My teenage son hates it too and is no longer using it along with most of his friends. He and a lot of his friends' accounts have been easily hacked since this new "feature" has been implemented. Coincidence?Maybe. Why, FB, would you change something that already worked into something else that annoys it's users. I understand not everybody is going to like change, but when so many people have an aversion to your app, one would think you'd listen to them. At least give the users an option to use the new app if they want, or keep the classic method if they don't. And if they like the new app, allow them to switch FB accounts. FB might seem like it is a free social network to use, but just because people don't have to pay a subscription to it, doesn't necessarily mean it's free. Users are paying for FB, but not in a traditional sense; we're paying for it by being subjected to non-solicited ads and exposing our personal information (be it known, or not) to paying advertisers and other big businesses. Our privacy might be blocked from the public, but certainly not from advertisers that pay FB big money to know FB users' habits.
An excellent, perfectly functional application.

+5 stars for making an awesome app. Switching between Facebook and Messenger is easy, intuitive, and seamless. The messenging options are numerous, e.g. emojis, voice recordings, photo-taking, and sending photos from your photo album, and the Facebook team really did a good job on making a stellar app. I can't express enough how much faster and easier I can send messenges now. -2 stars for forcing everyone to download the Messenger app and removing the chat functionality from the Facebook app. As should be explicitly obvious from all of the ratings, your users don't appreciate your forcing us to download an extra app just so we can continue to use a feature we originally already had, despite how amazing the Messenger app is. You should have added the Messenger app as an add-on to the original Facebook app, so we could have had the awesome new messenging interface all within the original Facebook app. Additionally, in regards to the hypothetical combined facebook/messenger app, you could have added an option for the app to always start up with the newsfeed or the messenger, so those who only wish to message could already be right where they wanted to be. In summary, amazing new messenger interface; abysmally poor implementation—it could have all been in one app without forcing people to download another.
After 2 years, I finally deleted you
by Winged Ox on 2015/02/28 18:06
I recently updated my iOS, and the repeated notification that your app works better if I let you notify me was the last straw. I am given that setting option for a reason, and if you're going to interrupt me every time I use your app to remind me of my selection and why I should change, you're out of my life. Here's something your strategy and architecture folks need to understand: In part due to the incredible amount of liberty and choice of information and experience that the likes of Facebook and the wider Internet ushered into our worlds, Millenials are far less tolerant of this kind of coercion; even delicately packaged suggestions become an annoyance. We know what we want most of the time, we know how to get it; if we don't know right now, we will in a matter of minutes. We are not like our unwitting parents and those before, believing that we must dampen our preferences and accept all of the reminders, placements, and suggestions as the nature of the beast. I, and my counterparts, have been liberated to the point that we can choose with greater autonomy, making us tremendously less elastic to embedded solicitations and nudges. If I wanted to be notified by your app with a sound or a bubble, I've been an iPhone user since 2012, I know how to do this with the flip of a wrist, and I haven't because I DO NOT WANT TO. Mmkay? I've deleted your app and I will not return.
Don't need it
by Banned messenger on 2014/10/17 22:25
The Facebook messenger app is not necessary. The Facebook app alone was fine and there was no problems and issues. Now we have to be force to install another app just to be able to receive and send messages. Not only they talk about this on the news and you can also read about it online, but installing Facebook messenger you are allowing them and the government complete access to your cellphone, they could read your text messages, look at your contact list and access your camera, which for people with smart phones that's your front and back cam, also allowing them to see your photo albums and so on. Listen everyone don't let them force you to download something you don't need, plain and simple, if ain't for us the people than they would go out of business, if you wanna talk to your friends or families, than text them, you don't need messenger for that, all your doing by downloading the app is basically saying hey go right ahead and have my phone and all the info and what not, if you guys are with me, than don't download this, complain and fight and trustme when I say you will be heard and changes would be made, but if you guys stay quiet and do nothing, than they don't care, pretty soon we have no privacy, stand up and don't allow them to make these changes and do what they want, we don't need there social app, we didn't had it back than and we were fine, we don't need it now!!!
Love 2 in 1💖, HATE 1 in 2!!! 😡🔥
by Yzma Loves Levers on 2014/07/30 22:27
Like the title says. Everyone loves having an app that does several different things right? That's the Facebook app of last year. Now this year we have the latest technology: a crappy app that's only half as powerful as the previous generation, so we make you get two apps because we're going to undo everything we've accomplished so far! What?! That doesn't even make sense! Having the NEW Facebook is like choosing to dump your perfectly fine smart phone for a flip phone. But guess what! The flip phone isn't powerful enough to do what you need in a mobile device, so you have to get a second one in order to make sure everything is getting done, which ends up being a completely unnecessary hassle. You have to call someone so you pull the flip phone out and dial the phone. But then you need to send a picture over email to whomever you're talking to and you're not near a computer. Your flip phone can't talk and email so you take out your SECOND phone and send the email with the picture while talking. That's exactly what this feels like. You're talking to someone in chat, and bam you have a new comment notification. Your new crappy app that you chose over your previous perfectly fine one can't do anything but message, so you go back to the other app to comment over there. Ridiculous, annoying, and totally unnecessary. The Messenger should be optional, not forced.
Convenient
by Jah Meen on 2014/08/19 08:52
Much better and efficient than the Facebook app in my personal opinion. I hated the message system when it was integrated into the actual Facebook app. I actually used Messenger a while ago before Facebook made it required to be downloaded. I love it, it's more convenient and concise. I'm not sure what everyone is saying how it takes such a huge space and whatnot, I don't seem to have a problem with it- just disable notifications and only message when you really have to, I guess. The privacy setting is a bit normal, I'm pretty sure if you read through the fine details of many sites, you'll learn it's almost about the same. App-wise, it's great and works pretty well and does what it needs to. I like being able to toggle with my notifications. The interface is really simplistic and nice, so it's easy to use. Overall, I don't quite understand all the hate and negativity, I've already had to switch to messenger a while ago- my Facebook account seems to react faster to the changes and updates faster than most others (for some reason, I get the new update layout earlier than others, about 3 weeks to a month ahead), and I don't complain.
From Great to Terrible
by Dancecheer18 on 2014/08/26 00:16
This used to be a fantastic app- I liked having my conversations take up nearly my entire screen. But since the release of the iPad version, it's just gotten worse and worse. First of all, there was no reason to restrict the conversation to just the right side of the screen, and list all the conversations on the left- now it looks just like the Messages page in the FB app, meaning the only advantage to this app now is that it's one less page you have to load. Oh except it crashes or freezes on me at least once a day, I can't send pictures and text at the same time, and it still replaces the send button with that stupid thumbs up sticker every time your type box is empty, a feature FB did away with a while ago (because it's too easy to accidentally click and can be interpreted as rather passive-aggressive). Oh and FB recently decided not to display in its app any messages sent or received in the messenger app but the single most recent, which is just silly. It all seems rather petty listed here, but it talk to people on FB a lot, and constantly having to cope with either technical glitches or design flaws every day becomes old after a while. I think the only reason it's taken me this long to ditch the app is the nevertheless lovely pop and ding noise the app makes when it sends me a notification.
It's pretty good, but I don't see why I need a separate app for messaging.
by Rjqb11 on 2013/12/21 16:14
It's ok, like I said in my title. The thing is, why do I have to have another app for messaging. I hope in the future we won't need apps for using anything and everything on Facebook. The whole reason I downloaded the Facebook app in the first place was for convenience. So I didn't have to go to a computer or have to use my internet app to use it. So having a seperate app for the use of something on an app is pretty much the same as having to use my internet app or having to use something else. It should just be all on one app. Every other app I have has all of it's uses, tools, features, etc. in that one app. Like I said, I just hope I won't need more apps to use other things and waste more space on my hard drive on my phone, and take up more pages of my phone to make navigating apps harder and more confusing. There are plenty more reasons why I think it should all be one app, but I don't feel like going into major detail and writing a book about these problems. Just my opinion, the Facebook messenger app is ok though. It works well, the messenger app is good. That's not the problem though. The problem is what I just explained. You wanted me to write a review and this is what I have thought about it.
A review that doesn't complain
by Najifa Khursid on 2014/09/09 08:04
I wrote a review on this app once before in the past and I felt the need to write another one. First of all, it's allowed not aloud. I just thought I should educate the others on the proper terminology. Second of all, this app isn't forced on anyone. I know lots of people that use the Facebook app to message and not the messenger app. The messenger app just makes things simple and more fun. It's very convenient compared to the Facebook app. It makes communicating a lot easier since it can basically be done offline now. It uses very very little data weekly. I absolutely love it. The stickers are cute and sometimes a voice text makes things more personal if you're talking to a loved one across the world from you. Last but not least, for all of you worried about security, you shouldn't be social networking. If you're so paranoid about an app then don't use it. Use your web browser or something. Your phone does not need to run on apps. Find other reasons to hate the app like it not working properly or constantly bugs out. Security isn't an issue because what in the world is ever secure over the Internet?
Love the app; hate dem thumbs
by Thatchickthathatesyourthumbs on 2014/11/17 01:22
It's a great app that allows me to stay in touch with dear friends. BUT HOLY CRAP THAT THUMBS UP BUTTON. Who in god's name decided to make it the same as the "send" button??? I keep accidentally clicking on them and it's the most irritating thing ever!!! No...it's beyond irritating....it's beyond frustrating... It's driving me literally INSANE. I can't eat...I can't sleep...I keep having nightmare about giant thumbs. THUMBS EVERYWHERE. I tried talking to my therapist about it and he suggested I don't use the app anymore. But how can I do that when that's my only way of talking to the most beautiful human in existence?? I just can't anymore....I'm losing it...I'm losing everything. I raged so hard about the thumbs during work that I lost my job... Now my children are starving. MY OWN CHILDREN ARE AFRAID OF ME!! Whenever I'm around them they hide their hands because they overheard me screaming "I swear I'm gonna break all these thumbs" when I accidentally sent 3 thumbs up without even touching my phone. It's ruining my life!!! Please...I'm begging you for the love of god and all that is holy....get rid of that thumbs up button...or at least make it a different button than the send button!!! I want to get my life back....
Poor choice Facebook
by Xmas1888 on 2014/08/30 18:35
While Facebook has a history of making changes that upset the status quo and many users in so, the changes usually are for the best technologically and users eventually get accustomed to them. This one is different. The separation of the messenger feature from the Facebook app makes no sense from a user interface standpoint nor from a programming standpoint. While the excuse is a 20% increase in speed of app, that ignores the fact that the messenger is still part of the Facebook app and takes up resources. Unless their plan is to completely remove it, that's not likely to significantly make a difference in speed. Also the app is a poor substitute for whatsapp, which may be why they're doing this. They want users to go over to that program, as it's much more flexible and powerful. The messenger part of the FB app is tiny relative to the entire app, as is evidenced by it 400k size. I personally do not use FB as my primary means of messaging friends, and judging by the amount of negative reviews, I'm not alone. I use it primarily to share posts with friends, especially those who don't have FB mobile. This separation of the app just makes it more convoluted to do so, having to use two apps to do what one use to be able to do quite well. I hope Facebook sees the folly in this eventually. Till then I'll be using whatsapp
Absolutely not. 👎🚫

I like this app, I really do. I like how it runs, the sound effects are nice, and it's aesthetically pleasing. The negative aspects, however, far outnumber the few strings of approval I hold for this app. First, why the HECK should I download a separate app for MY Facebook account to read MY messages? You're telling me that I can't even read my own flipping messages—from friends, family, my MANAGERS—because I don't have a separate app? The in-app chat was fine. The separate app was more than likely just a way to bridge the gap into major privacy infringement—which brings me to my second point. After hearing from various friends and articles, and then even checking myself, I found out that the terms to this app are ridiculous. Who the heck do you guys think you are? You have absolutely no right to take my and friends' information. Facebook isn't even great. The only reason I use it anymore is to store pictures and CHAT WITH PEOPLE—which, evidently, I can't do anymore. If it weren't for the five years' worth of pictures and such on there, I would flat-out close my account. Bottom line, Facebook? Get your heads screwed on right and stick to honesty. I am disappointed. I love this app, but I'm ticked off enough to delete it. I refuse to let my and friends' information be taken like that. I guess I won't be chatting on Facebook anymore.
It doesn't seem necessary
by Bbygurl96 on 2014/09/11 08:00
It is simply unnecessary to me. Facebook app had a messaging system. One that was perfectly fine. And after certain updates, you cannot open your messages unless you download the new messenger app. And even then it takes you out of the Facebook app every time you want to reply. Now, you can simply ignore the app download and use safari but that logs you out every single time you exit safari. And I don't want to have to put in my log in a hundred times to have a conversation with someone. Now I know some people like messenger, and that is fine. And I don't truly mind the whole "peeking into your phone usage" because quite honestly privacy barely exists anyways. It's just that I think you should be able to choose whether or not you want it, while still being able to have your Facebook up to date. I personally have deleted my Facebook app, re-downloaded it and refuse to update it because it automatically shows the "option" of downloading messenger. Messenger was nice but it takes up unnecessary storage and is a forced app via Facebook. I think it would be more beneficial to integrate the messenger app into the Facebook messenger. Everyone can still use the original app for messaging, but it has all the perks of messenger.
Is this a joke?
by TheBRADLeyB on 2014/12/03 06:48
I'm running iOS 8.0.2 and it's been a few updates on this chat app and yet I still cannot pull down on a notification and reply. For those of you unaware 8.0 brought a sorely needed feature where when a notification banner pops up on the top of the screen you can pull it down and type in a message. Very useful for texting and other apps since it's a pain to switch apps, especially with video apps, but this messenger app has not installed that feature yet. Why? Does doing an update every 4 weeks without adding any useful features do anything for anyone? Or is Facebook updating the app every 4 weeks and pushing automatic updating in its notes in hopes people will forget to re-rate the app and thus they won't have these disgusting 1-2 star average ratings? For those of you who don't know, ratings are split into two categories. All ratings spanning all versions and then the important one (the one they show by default on the App Store) which is the ratings since the last update. Update: so now there is use of the iOS 8.0 feature but what it does is allow you to choose between muting the conversation and replying which just opens the app. This isn't what I wanted guys. This is worse than giving me nothing because it shows you spent time making something no one wants instead of giving me what I want.
Wish I didn't need this app
by punkassjim on 2012/10/09 00:51
The app works beautifully, although it's terrible on the iPad. Between the standard website, the Facebook app, and this Messenger app, there isn't a single way for me to fully enjoy effortless FB messaging on the iPad. The website doesn't refresh messages properly on iPad; the Facebook app is clunky and the overlay UI is too easy to dismiss (with an errant touch or swipe) while you're writing a long message, and lose everything; this messaging app, while great on iPhone, has the terrible up-scaled keyboard that makes it hard to type. But this app is nice, responsive, focused. For that reason, I love it. But, to have two separate apps for Facebook functions is kinda ridiculous. Now that the Facebook app has been updated to native performance, I want to delete this app altogether...but the FB app doesn't allow landscape typing. So I'm stuck with this app. Also, an annoying regression in the latest design change: it used to be that I could tap on a message, then select a word or portion of the message to copy/define it. Now I can't. You've changed it so I can only copy the whole message. It's not nice to take away functionality.
A couple of issues
by FROZYO on 2014/04/01 05:04
Like others have said, the notification system is messed up, especially since the last update. The Facebook app was always telling me to download Messenger for a better experience, and I've had it on my phone for a while. They seemed to integrate well, seeing as when I click the chat icon or anything related chat in the regular Facebook app, it redirects me to the Messenger app... but that was until the last update for Messenger. Previously, I did not get chat notifications from the Facebook app and would instead get them via Messenger, further reiterating their integration with each other. But now I get chat notifications from both Facebook AND Messenger, clogging up Notification Center with double alerts and sounds, which doesn't make sense because chat is not supposed to work from the Facebook app (and it doesn't), so why I am getting notifications for functions that I can't access/are obsolete when Messenger is installed? Isn't that the whole point of a separate app? Ease of communication and better functionality? I had to delete Messenger because it was driving me insane with constant, double notifications and alerts/vibrations.

We receive data about you whenever you use or are running Facebook, such as when you look at another person's timeline, send or receive a message, search for a friend or a Page, click on, view or otherwise interact with things, use a Facebook mobile app, or make purchases through Facebook. When you post things like photos or videos on Facebook, we may receive additional related data (or metadata), such as the time, date, and place you took the photo or video. We receive data from or about the computer, mobile phone, or other devices you use to install Facebook apps or to access Facebook, including when multiple users log in from the same device. This may include network and communication information, such as your IP address or mobile phone number, and other information about things like your internet service, operating system, location, the type (including identifiers) of the device or browser you use, or the pages you visit. For example, we may get your GPS or other location information so we can tell you if any of your friends are nearby, or we could request device information to improve how our apps work on your device. Btw that all came from the facebook terms and conditions
Works very well, for the most part.

The only thing I don't like is that if you are in the FB app and you press the Messenger button, it automatically opens the FB Messenger app. It can be useful and cool at times, but if you don't want to open the Messenger app, you have no choice. Like, if I want to send a quick reply then the app has to open for me to do that. And there is a new feature that came with one of the recent iOS updates, where you can pull down the message banner and reply right then and there, and when you pull down a FB Messenger banner, it shows that you have 2 options, you can either "mute" or you can "reply". You can close the banner by pushing it up and you can reply by tapping the banner. But if you pull down the banner and press reply, it brings you straight to the app! You would think that, just like with regular text/iMessages, you would be able to reply right then and there. But no! It brings you to the app. And you have to go through that whole process. Great app! Works great! But the notification banner process with replying, and such, is really quite annoying...
Wake up Facebook.

This app has a ridiculous amount of 1 stars. Do they not get the hint yet? Nobody likes this or want this. So many people use their mobile devices for social media nowadays, and they think forcing us to get a whole separate app to chat with people is a good idea? At least give us the option to use it. Yeah, the app is alright, but if you don't have it downloaded, they refuse to let you see your messages. REALLY? I'm out and about running errands, I'm nowhere near a computer, and I don't want to download the app. What happens if someone sends you an important message? My husband is currently deployed and messaging via wifi is the only way we can talk. So you're forcing me to download another app just to talk to my husband who is DEPLOYED? Is that really fair? This is one of the worst ideas Facebook has had. Facebook has had it's changes in the past that some people didn't like at first, but take a look at the reviews! The bad reviews far outweigh the good reviews. If they're thinking "people will eventually come around to it" they're WRONG. Give us back the option to message in the Facebook app and see our messages in there! If I really want the messenger app, then I'll download it. However, do not force me to download an app for ANOTHER app. Absolutely ridiculous.
Why do I need 2 Facebook apps? Can't one be enough?
by A once loyal fan on 2014/12/10 15:09
I don't want this application. I am very unhappy that Facebook forced everyone to download it by canceling the message functionality of the regular app. There is no acceptable reason for the Facebook app I already have to be unable to send messages like it always has. This isn't a technology problem, this isn't an "enhancement," this is Facebook simply forcing you to download more applications. What's next, the news feed app? The notifications app? The friend request app!? This is ridiculous. So thanks Facebook for another splendid app, and you're welcome for one of the millions of downloads this maneuver got you alone. Update: it's especially sleazy for Facebook to keep pushing out updates to cover up more and more of it's bad reviews. Since the only reviews that are displayed without digging for them are the most current version, each time there's an update all of the previous reviews get dumped into the "all reviews ever" category. Anyone who doesn't repost their reviews is no longer seen, even if they're still angry about things that updates have not changed (like forcing everyone to download this app by removing the message functionality of the original app). You're still a sleaze bag, Facebook, way to go.
This app needs improvement
by Sexycaucasian on 2014/11/25 06:39
So before messenger came out, people were able to 'go offline' for the people they chose. I'd like that back. Going offline for some people was really nice, then you can avoid a conversation that you don't want to have. Now it's as if you have no way to get away from people, even when you're simply scrolling through your newsfeed. Also, there have been rumors going around that messenger is a bad app to get mainly for hacking situations. I'm not saying I believe it, because I haven't been hacked (yet). But it'd be nice to be able to contact people, and some people don't get messenger and can't talk with friends or family without it. I feel that people should have the choice, whether or not they want to get the app. So please consider keeping messenger for people who like it, but also allowing people to talk to others on the Facebook app itself Going offline for some people would be great. It would definitely boost up props for messenger. Also, people need to talk to eachother, whether it's serious or not. So forcing people to get the messenger app just to talk to somebody is unfair and pretty much pointless. Giving people the choice will make messenger and Facebook a better app. Thanks.

This review is being posted by someone who much prefers a good old pencil... seriously... I started using Facebook only about a year ago... My issues with this app may be as simple as an IBM error (Idiot Behind Machine)... But I think not... Now Facebook feels like its in two places on my device... That in itself may not be all bad, but I have missed some important messages... That is most likely my fault. I'm sure there is a way to be notified when I check FB but only if I scroll through all the contacts and select the bold texted messages... This is my biggest issue ... I have had FB lock up 5 times in the past 4 days... This has not happened in the past... I have 80% of storage available and nothing is running on background ?!?! It may be all coincidence, but don't think it is... The apple product I use is amazing and new... Never been happier with the intuitive nature that the 5s brings to my minimal "computing" skills, I need to talk to some friends who are much more savvy with these peripherals to gain some understanding.... Hope your experience is better than mine... If the " kinks " get worked out, this may be helpful for some.
Direct Messaging Connection - STOP Harassing to Download!!
by mfee86 on 2014/09/03 14:38
I'm extremely annoyed that Facebook has forced its users to download an additional app in order to send/receive Facebook messages. Reluctantly, I downloaded it because I wasn't able to get into my messages via the normal Facebook app any longer. Now, I receive a request to link my contacts to the app for direct messaging EVERY time I open the message tab; this is incredibly annoying. For those who want to connect their personal messages and their Facebook, I'm sure they will enjoy this feature, but for those of us who want to keep the two separate, this feature is not desirable. You need to adjust the alerts that occur to suggest connecting the two; if I wanted to utilize this function, I would have the first time it was suggested. The alert popping up every time before I can get into my messages only angers me versus entice me to connect these two. I DO NOT want to have to connect my Facebook messages to my alerts or texts - I want to utilize Facebook at my own discretion and I think this continued harassment about allowing this feature on my phone is exhausting. Please be respectful of your users and not force them or pressure them into utilizing a feature they don't want or need.
Invasive - with no-choice but, fall-in & join rank-&-file
by Icon7888 on 2014/08/03 11:59
I DO agree with those above all of who mentioned the reasons this separate app should not be forced upon us in order to receive our original mssg from friends. Seems like another qay of migrating the masses to other invassive forms of your record-keeping, conversation-saving for personal profiling & perhaps govt retrieval! Addionally, I deleted it days ago after somehow, WITHOUT APPROVAL of SETTINGS BY ME & on my phone, I turned on my phone, as fb app had previously been closed, however, several times I found it open as soon as I turned on my phone. But what prompted me to delete mssg app & stop using fb on phone, for several days was because of the following. As I was turning on my phone to check an email, I was simultanously sitting on the potty, as said earlier, fb should've been off & NOT active, however, to my horror as i turned on the phone, already sitting I saw a flash of an image of myself, as you do when taking a selfie! Only this was NOT ME TAKING A SELFIE ON THE TOILET! Additionally, facebook suddenly was on & open! Naturally I deteted all fb data, & in the process I discovered an unknown ios logged-on! I regret not writing that exact whatever-it-was ios! It had a strange couple of letters attached to it's id!
Just one question....
by Agentmookie on 2014/08/09 23:42
When will Facebook reactivate chat within the Facebook app? I absolutely refuse to download another app just so I can chat on Facebook with my phone. I would rather just not send and receive messages at all. Matter of fact, I may just choose to stop using Facebook all together. I hope Facebook's advertisers are seeing how their customers are responding to this. News flash adverts, your ads are not going out to as many people now that Facebook is driving away their users. I refuse to download an app that takes up so much extra space on my phone when I already had an app that did the same exact thing as this one. I refuse to give Facebook permission to access my microphone or camera at their will. If they only needed the camera to take photos within the app and only needed the microphone for use with the app, they would not word their 'privacy' statement to say they can access it when they feel like it. They also sure as heck are not going to get permission to see my call logs or send messages to my contacts. Facebook as over-stepped boundaries and needs to be put in its place. Time for someone to step up with a new community site and not sell out to government watch dogs and evaluate our every move.
Terrible App
by Stephen Chase Baker on 2014/08/08 02:41
Let's just list a few of the worst things about this app, alright? There's enough immediately out of the gate to give this a 1 star review. 1.) This app is forced for all people who use Facebook on their phones, immobilizing us from messaging friends until we have downloaded this app. 2.) I've already ran into numerous bugs that makes this app unusable and leaves me unable to use Facebook at all! From not letting me open the app, to not letting me even delete this app, there is no way that I have found yet to fix this problem. 3.) Facebook messenger was doing perfectly fine without the need of it's own forced app. At least I could sign out of Facebook to avoid people looking at my conversations. From what I'm reading in other reviews, that's not even possible here. That's idiotic if true. I would keep going, but I feel as though Facebook won't even bother removing this terrible idea for an app and remain on the path of forcing us to download apps to use it. In all honesty, I'm starting to hate using Facebook more and more. I'm honestly starting to think about finding alternative ways to talk to my friends. If Facebook don't get their game together soon, they're going to lose more of their already dwindling users.
Forced on those who use Facebook.
by cutesy on 2014/08/09 12:59
This app might be a great app, but the fact that all Facebook users are required to download the app so that we can read and respond to our messages is inconvenient and a great nuisance. Why should it be forced down our throats? Is there a reason why it cannot be optional? A legitimate reason? I personally am turned off from Facebook. The reason we use Facebook is too keep in contact with people who may be hundreds of miles away, and messaging is a huge part of that, but now we have to use a separate app to do so? Ridiculous. I don't want this review to sound like ramblings of a lazy teenager, so I'll go into other reasons why this "idea" is a bad one. What about those who had their phone capacity at its limit and didn't have enough storage, or even enough storage on iCloud, to download and save ANOTHER app? Yet, they would like to see their messages from Facebook. Changing the appearance of the social media is one thing, however, changing it's basic operations and forcing users, who support or used to support, Facebook, is another thing entirely. I wonder if a survey of Facebook users on whether they would want a separate app for messaging would have been beneficial. I oppose this app in so many ways.
Google+
by Mach Ten on 2015/01/06 10:47
Looks like someone is riding the Google Plus wagon. This app doesn't seem to do so well, though. I haven't been using this in such a long time because of the convenience of the Facebook app. Now, you're choosing to have us download this app and move out of the Facebook app just to talk to our friends. If you ask me, I'd say you just through Facebook's chat's convenience out the window. I have yet to see what this app is like, though, so I'll just leave five stars until further notice. Update: It isn't worth it to me. I'm sorry, but I don't like how different the UI is, compared to the chatting, I don't like how I have to be forced to download this app in order to chat with my friends, and I don't like its inconvenience. <.> As of now, I'll just use an app called Puffin Web Browser for Facebook chatting until something good happens. Like, maybe allowing us to chat using the Facebook app, itself. <.> Please, just let us chat in the main app again. It was way easier and more convenient back then. =|
To hell with this
by Pumpkin Jack on 2014/08/08 12:16
This app is dumb as rocks. This is me killing two birds with one stone, not only am I insulting this app, but I'm also insulting rocks. Though I'm not prepared to go into why hate rocks, I am prepared to go into why hate this app. There is nothing that I could add to my messages that would make it so special that it deserves it's own app. Even if I were perfectly articulate, completely deep in thought and could muster words that your strongest vocabulary couldn't even fathom. I could be messaging someone on Facebook with the secrets to ColdFusion, extra terrestrial life, the origin of God, and who killed JFK and it still wouldn't deserve it's own app. I was against joining Facebook just like I was against joining my space before it now this only solidifies and justifies my beliefs to not want to be part of this stupid social media. By adding this one more step for my friends and I to communicate I have decided that I'm going to go the old-fashioned route and actually start writing them letters. I know you're thinking "it'll take a very long time for that letter to get to them" but at least it will be heartfelt, hand written, and everything that I wanted to say without the bells, whistles, gimmicks and clichés. I wish you all a good day and burn in hell.
You Don't Have to Install It
by dnjdnjdnjdnj on 2014/08/15 19:21
So, maybe this is just what has worked for me, but when I got the screen that says "messages are moving to messenger!" and gives you two options (learn more, or install) I clicked install, clicked the reviews, read a few, DIDNT INSTALL, then went back to the fb app and I could see my messages like normal. Haven't seen it come up again where it's basically forcing me to install. I absolutely DO NOT want to install a separate messenger app, for a number of reasons, but mainly because I find it extremely irritating to take out a feature of the app that worked perfectly fine before, and separate into an entirely new app for no apparent reason. It just feels cluttered and stupid to go to an entirely separate app to message someone on Facebook. If I'm using Facebook on my computer, I don't have to open a new window just to message people, I can do everything in the same tab. I'm speaking for myself but I only use apps that are efficiently and streamlined, and this is a step in the opposite direction. Forcing users to do this is what makes it even more terrible. Facebook, LISTEN TO YOUR USERS. or at least check out the App Store and acknowledge the 1-star rating for your useless app that nobody wants.
Really Convenient for People Like Me
by Jrhrum eur on 2014/09/08 14:52
If you're like me who doesn't really have any interest for Facebook and is only there for communication then this app is really much more convenient than the Facebook app itself. I uninstalled Facebook long time ago not just because it uses too much space but because I hated the idea of only knowing that someone messaged you if and only if you logged in. I'm not that type of person who does not log out their social media accounts so it's such a pain in the @ whenever someone talks to me and I need to log in and log out again and again. But with this app my life is now at ease. You guys are so worried about the privacy issue thing but take note that this is also business. If you're that terrified about the privacy of your information then maybe it's time to ask ourselves who the heck cares about your information other than you and well, maybe Facebook. Every social media does this and I'm surprised as to why not all complains about it.
Do Not Sync Your Contacts!
by WARRZONE on 2014/11/11 08:41
Don't sync your contacts list. It's a big invasion of privacy that maybe you are fine with, but your friends might not be. Make sure Synced Contacts is switched off in the Messenger app Settings. If you already did sync your contacts list, thus uploading all your friends' personal info to the Facebook servers, you can delete it by opening the Messenger app and clicking Settings > Synced Contacts > Learn More (Manage Imported Contacts for Messenger) > Delete All. I suspect that one of the reasons Facebook released this app was to get everyone's personal info. Most people click accept without reading anything. Each person that shares their contacts list may only have pieces of a person's contact info, but Facebook can put the pieces together like a puzzle. If, scratch that, 'when' a friend's account gets hacked, this is one way your info can get leaked to spam lists, and you get annoying telemarketer and scam calls. Facebook claims syncing helps people connect, and it helps the engine generate suggestions. I believe the risks outweigh the rewards. Your contacts show up in the app, and it works just fine without syncing. Be considerate of your friends, and leave syncing turned off.
Needs improvement
by 151 Proof on 2014/02/28 07:33
Overall it's a great app but it's still to slow transmitting back n forth, txt'ing is WAY FASTER but there are of course some folks that you don't want to txt so you use this sluggish app. Also, selecting "Friends" from FB to chat with, where are they? EVERYTIME it's a maze trying to get to message someone different and there's like different procedures that you have to go through to select people that are using something different, I'm not sure WHAT different thing, maybe a different phone, different app, different network, maybe they're on a desktop, I don't know but it's clearly not seamless, there's a lot of having to mess with the app to bring someone up on the screen to message them. Another problem, scrolling backwards to a message written a few months ago, gee whiz, can't that be made EASIER? Then the app is always "connecting", "reconnecting" or "disconnecting" gee whizz!! I know, blame it on the signal, or the satellite, or the network, or the carrier, or the mobile device... But once again, overall it's a great little app!!
Privacy invasion etc.
by Dkjsbrbchdnxjdbdjxjjsnd on 2014/08/20 04:08
I personally liked the messaging on the Facebook app itself. I liked the little bubble on the side of the screen. A few days ago, I went to message one of my friends that I haven't talked with in a while, and they forced me to download the app if I wanted to use chat on my phone. It's completely ridiculous! I've read the recent articles about this app and how invasive it is. I don't want Facebook reading my emails! They also want me to input my phone number! I don't want everyone on my friend list knowing my phone number! They look through a lot of your stuff that is on your phone (things like emails without permission) and some of that stuff is private! I have business emails on there that I would rather not have random strangers on the internet know about, but at the same time, I want to message my friends! Facebook has crossed many lines, and none of them are good. This app itself functions very poorly in my opinion compared to the actual Facebook app. I have nothing to hide, but I'd rather not have this company invading my privacy and ignoring my rights. You can't search without a warrant, and they're searching our emails without permission. This needs to change now.
Oh Really?
by drerko on 2014/09/04 04:54
Hey Facebook. You're on borrowed time. If you keep forcing people to download new apps without proper security settings while still being woefully intrusive, you're going to go more the way of VHS and MySpace than Apple or Google. Jerking around your clientele into downloading apps with no real purpose and forcing unwanted updates that are frustratingly complicated is not a sustainable business model. There is a reason why a shrinking number of teenagers and young adults use Facebook; they are simply tired of your crap. The only reason most of us downloaded this stupid app was to make the notification disappear. I will only open this application to make the notification disappear. Congratulations, you have created a worthless app that's only purpose is to remove the notification icon from your other, slightly-less-worthless-but-still-pretty-lethargic app. I hope that when you enjoy your nonfat skinny whatever from Starbucks that you have to go to a little Starbucks kiosk down the street to pick up your whatever drink, because that is basically what you have created here: an inconvenience to something that worked just fine before. Just remember, Facebook, you are not too big to fail.
The app works
by Marswolfe on 2014/09/12 03:14
This does everything it says it would. It's very easy to use and very functional. I think the privacy thing is a non-issue for now though options to limit it would have been appreciated. That being said, I do not enjoy having my more personal, business, or long messages combined with the same stream of communication when "chatting". The idea that it eliminates unwanted space or is faster or uses less battery life is just not factual. The programmers at Facebook could just have easily included this inside the Facebook app and previously they had a wonderfully functional way to do so. My thoughts on the matter: facebook wants to have an image of being the new chat messenger system. By dividing their app they manage to neatly confine people to chat or Facebook whereas it used to be completely integrated. Though the chat works great and the Facebook app works great, this is objectively a step back. I hope that this phase of Facebook is short lived. It's not the end of the world but I hope that an enormous communication and networking company will listen to what the vast majority want.
Why no zero star option?
by LlamaScarf on 2014/12/04 20:00
Facebook wouldn't let me use messages unless I downloaded this app. Sigh. So I downloaded it. I don't use Facebook much but occasionally I get messages. Why is there this insistence of the app that I turn on push notifications? I don't care about my messages that much, I check them when I feel like. I don't want to waste my data on push notifications from an app I was basically forced to download and hardly ever use. Every time I open the app, at least one thing pops up. Every time there is this big screen with no visible X button to close it. You have to tap around and guess, I feel bad for those who don't try that and end up turning them on to get it to go away. It makes no sense to me why they insist on this. Give me one warning, inform me that it's off in case I want it on, but then please respect my desire to not have them on by not harassing me about it. When I want to check a message I want to do it quick. I don't want to have to waste my time searching for how to X out of something that will never stop appearing. I'm very frustrated by this and frankly I want to delete the app but like I said, I occasionally use it and Facebook forces me to have it to check my messages.
You want to read this!
by Usually don't rate apps on 2014/09/02 23:35
Why are you forcing everyone to use two apps for something that only needs one? It was good the way it was!!! Now I have to keep switching between apps, and it uses way too much data. There's also a whole lot of bugs. Facebook, you've seen all of these reviews. Don't you think it would be a good idea to change it back to one app, the way it was? One more thing, I saw something online, and apparently, this app can: take photos and video using both cameras, record audio, use GPS or network location to find your exact location to see what stores you've been to, read and edit your SMS messages to see what you are talking about in order to show relevant ads, and can sell that information. All of that WITHOUT your permission, even if your phone is locked and the app is closed. So why don't you freakin' stalkers leave us alone, and for all of you Messenger users (hopefully former Messenger users now), delete the app immediately. If you need to message someone, use a computer or Safari. Facebook, you care too much about money, and you don't care about respecting the privacy of your users. So why don't you stop using us like objects, and start treating us like people.
Irritating problems!!!
by Katibugg14 on 2015/02/03 23:52
Okay so I know that to talk to people through Facebook I have to use the messenger app I've accepted it and don't see reason to get all heated about it. My real problem is the fact that messenger will show that a message has been seen by the recipient and then I'll close out and go back and it will show that the same message has been delivered but not read, it's kind if a pattern. But I'm left with the same problem, I never know whether my message has been read until the recipient messages back. ( this is very annoying when I like to check and see if my boyfriend has read my messages, especially when they are personal and I'm left in a state of panic!!) Also the App tends to not tell me when the user was last active, that's one if my fave things about the app, that way I can see when people are active and ignoring my texts! Yes it may sound a bit psycho but we all do it soooo don't judge!! I really just want it fixed and I doubt that this rating will change anything, but it was worth a shot... Anyone else having similar problems?? Or us it perhaps just my phone?? Pleaseeee fix thus horrid insolence
Ugh
by Bbwgirly88 on 2012/09/01 15:35
Okay first off... This app is great... IF your not a fast typer ( like myself ) love lag when other people message you and love the new feature of rapid erase. I have never been one to complain but yet I have also never been this frustrated. I click delete and suddenly my entire message is being eaten up.... I have to hit a key to make it stop but if I dare press delete again it will resume eating my message. God forbid your typing while someone else is messaging you because you will end up missing letters and it lags terribly. I am a fast typer on my iPod touch and this app has done nothing but lag and slow me down. The only perks I see on the new smilies and icons...that's about it... oh and for those at this point are most likely thinking " the rapid erase is a feature on her iPod and she is just blaming the app " NO! bad judgmental people, bad! I have searched high and low for this feature on my iPod touch I have even googled this and my iPod does not do this. A quick fix though if your looking to make it stop is to hit a key and then back out of your current convo and then go back in... Messenger won't delete what you have typed so far but it seems to temporarily fix the issue...But yeah this is my review...
You people are ridiculous, this app is great!
by Wakethesunshine98255 on 2014/08/11 20:24
I switched to the messenger app six months ago and have had no issues using it whatsoever. All these people freaking out because of the privacy stuff and being forced to do it personally need to settle down. If you do your research you'll discover half of what you think makes this app a danger to society is based purely on poor wording and even so, nobody wants to bug into all your phones and listen to your daily conversations! And I can guarantee that if you paid attention to a lot of permissions your other apps request, you'd see a lot of the same stuff so I guess you just shouldn't even have apps or a phone if you're that worried! This app is great and way easy to use and I would highly recommend it even with all the stupid backlash it's been getting recently. The only thing I do wish it had was a way to mark messages as unread but otherwise I can definitely say I'm keeping it on my phone and using it!
Thanks Obama
by missbpx on 2014/08/08 16:26
Thanks for making billions of Facebook users have to go out of their way to download this stupid app just to send messages. I'm sure most of us are quite informed on how many privacy risks are associated with this "mandatory download." I have to let Facebook have access to my microphone and camera just to send messages like I was already doing without risking my privacy? Half the time I'm talking to people on Facebook I'm lying in my bed butt-naked just waking up or about to go to sleep. Oh but it's not just while I'm on Facebook that someone out there could tap into my personal data or camera/microphone, it's at any given time, whenever "they" please. What if I want to hook up my iPhone to my iHome at 3AM and dance naked in my living room to Gangnam Style? I no longer can feel safe doing the things I (no longer) secretly love such as watching hentai cartoons on my surround sound in my own home late at night after my dance sessions because 'someone' will be listening! It is absolutely maddening and if I didn't desperately want my Quentin Tarantino and Harry Potter blu-ray movies back from an ex-fling, whom I cannot reach outside of Facebook, SO BADLY then I wouldn't be downloading this garbage at all. Waste of space in my phone.
Thought out by unintelligent people.
by lakerfan121 on 2014/11/29 19:42
Obviously Facebook is trying to monopolize more by doing this. But it's not working. I use the Facebook app less simply because I can't message in it. there's still a spot for messaging just put it back. Terrible conception and terribly inconvenient. It's clear that the majority of people don't support this but Facebook continues to push it. Stop. It's not what we want. Facebook will NEVER and I mean EVER be the primary location where I or anyone else goes to message people. If I'm on my phone, im gonna text or iMessage or AIM or skype but god no I'm not gonna open messenger. Even if I did use messenger, there would be no one to talk to because only like 1 in 25 people conform to this bs and I don't want to talk to those people. Screw this major inconvenience. 1 star reviews for both apps now because the normal Facebook app is much worse without messenger. You want me to stay in your app and use it for a while? DONT MAKE TWO APPS SO ITS INCONVENIENT AND I HAVE TO SWITCH BACK AND FORTH. All that is gonna do is make me leave one of the apps and not return because who wants to sit there opening and closing apps every 10 seconds. It's messaging, it should be easy and quick to access. Jesus.
One star for going backwards.
by FitNerd on 2014/11/04 17:40
I'm not a Facebook junkie like many users however I do use Facebook to keep in touch with relatives and friends who live far away including my son who is in the military and stationed overseas. I like many folks who have purchased iPhones over the years use iPhone and Apple products because they are simple and easy to use. Facebook has got this all wrong instead of making a single user interface where I can both check my Facebook and add things to my wall and communicate with people via messenger all from the same app, they now have published this useless and ridiculous separate application to do something that I previously could do in one application. In my opinion this is not only a waste of Facebook resources when they could be using their talented staff to improve their single standalone application, but it's a waste of everyone else's time to have to switch between two different applications to accomplish something that they used to be able to in one. The app functions as I would expect but does complicate my communications with my son who often times has small windows of opportunity to reach out to his family.

New update

Horrible
by Yo.Sup.Homie. on 2015/03/03 04:29
This app is absolutely horrible. I liked being able to message THROUGH Facebook. There's no reason that we need another app to take up storage to do something that one app did just fine. Most people have a burning passion towards this app, but if we want to talk to our friends I guess we have to keep it.
No need for this ... it's Pointless !!!

I only downloaded because I couldn't use my FB app without the constant reminder to download the messenger and I actually liked it for the most part. IPhone 5s ios7.1.1 and whenever I try to send a message sometimes it won't get delivered until hours later.

Perfect For Me
by The Rican on 2014/08/31 07:02
This app does exactly what I need it to do right now.
Please do something about this app!
by Pblue164378 on 2014/09/08 19:46
I hate this app.
An excellent, perfectly functional application.
by Sierra Rhuno on 2014/09/22 18:40
+5 stars for making an awesome app.

Works very well, for the most part.
by I-Pod Touch Rox on 2015/02/11 12:52
The only thing I don't like is that if you are in the FB app and you press the Messenger button, it automatically opens the FB Messenger app.

Ugh
