I’m a foreigner living in China and use this app daily. Since the last update I’ve had to use a VPN to translate even though I have the Chinese language downloaded. It will give network errors if not and will not perform the translation. Pasting text to the app has also started having issues since the update. It now will take 15+ seconds for the text to paste if it pastes at all.

by petemuzak on 2021/09/25 00:51
What happened with the last update? This is my go to app here in China. It doesn’t translate or is insanely slow. It’s not a wifi or China Mobile issue. I haven’t updated the app on my iPad and it still works perfectly there. It’s definitely something with the app and this latest update. Please update/fix this issue soon.

Needs cut n paste for definitions or selection for definition language selection
by ben10473736738 on 2021/09/20 01:29
When I’m translating from Spanish to english, or vice versa, a words definition can appear in the opposing language. I don’t know the word, so explaining the meaning in a foreign language is worthless to me…. This would be okay if I could copy and paste the meaning in the bottom section back into the translator, but I cannot. It doesn’t let me highlight the definition… so can we fix this??????? This would make the app 10times better

Recently, I get a message directing me to visit translate.google.cn in the app. Please note that there are a lot of people in China mainland who depend on this app and it’s not convenient to use a VPN or pull up Google translate (it’s in the Chinese language) in browser. The only workaround is to download the libraries… All the news I’ve read says the translate service is not blocked in China, but seems like it now…

stop bombing people with popups about covid
by snack it on 2021/09/13 20:10
disgusting app as any other recently released by that spying company. once they identify the word covid they immediately bomb a user with info about it. i DONT WANT TO SEE that, its a translating app, non a some health site. Also about privacy - in previous versions there was the option to NOT allow you to retain images made by users for recognition purposes. This option has gone. You just want to ransack user's device for any single bit of private information to agressively infect everything later by ads.

by @d0pt me lover on 2021/09/12 22:41
It’s a very nice app when I use it for a Korean Yu-Gi-Oh cards sometimes it messes up the words but I’m pretty sure that’s because it’s just small text Google translate is very very helpful I think if you’re thinking about it you should get it.
Hit or miss
by GabriiellaaAA on 2021/09/12 14:47
Gave 2 stars bc i honestly expected more from Google. The ability to translate text in real time through AR function is cool, if it were more reliable that is😅 I initially used it to translate a shirt with Japanese writing on it & it worked very well, but later tried to use it to translate part of a manga & it failed miserably. Each attempt resulted in very poor translations, missing large portions of text entirely🥴(even upon using the scan feature). All in all its a pretty cool app & a great concept, but I think it could use improvement in functionality department🤷🏻‍♀️

Tiny bug
by Captain Fava on 2021/09/08 12:41
Since this is my only complaint, you can deduce how good this app is: sometimes the predictive text bar is missing, I have to switch to handwriting and then back to keyboard to make it appear. Not a bug, but I would also LOVE the ability to have a formal/informal setting for languages that make such distinctions, such as Spanish. PS In regards to accuracy I find it accurate but a basic knowledge of the target language is helpful… I think some reviewers have unreasonable expectations regarding context and colloquialisms.

Huge Downgrade
by hwie hcqhnrie on 2021/08/25 13:06
This app "updated" on my phone and now it is pretty much useless. The app doesn't offer the camera anymore and also removed tons of languages from its options. I feel like I’m back in 2010 using the app. Better off using google translate on safari now. Wasting huge amounts of time compared to the ease before removing real time camera translations.
Lots of merit, some drawbacks
by Mike Hallman on 2021/08/24 02:27
NB: This review relates specifically to French-English usage. First, the good things. While no translator will ever offer a perfect translation, because there’s so much more that goes into it, Google’s well-designed app does an excellent job. It does a fair job of picking up colloquialisms and the nuances of context that can dramatically change the meaning of a word or phase. The camera, conversation, and transcribe features are excellent. My two primary complaints are related. First, as with other Romance languages, French uses the second person plural of the pronoun “you” (vous) as a first person singular in formal settings. So informal singular is “tu” and formal is “vous”. If you are typing something in English to translate to French, there should be a way to indicate whether you want the formal or informal translation. Especially with as many irregular verbs as French has, if it defaults to the vous version it may be a challenge to adjust the verb to informal if you wish to do so. This should be a super easy fix. Related to the above, not only does the app not let you choose, but it often times is inconsistent throughout a passage. It will switch back and forth between vous and tu for singular usage. This can create some laborious manual correction. This is something the developers here really need to address.
Thank you for returning languages
by Ukraina Ponad Use on 2021/08/21 19:58
Thanks Google for returning multiple languages to the App! Now, back to my favorite Ukrainian language 👍🏻
Becoming less reliable over other translator apps
by No Default Nickname on 2021/08/21 02:38
I’m living in China and while I don’t know the language yet, in learning so a reliable translator app is essential to me. Google services don’t work here so that’s why I downloaded the language I needed for offline use. However, recently Google Translator has become unreliable. I will type something for it to translate or have someone speak into my phone to have it translated, oftentimes Google translator will not translate it to English, instead it will just try to load the translation. The blue arrow has a circle that keeps spinning around it until it says Network Error. What’s the point of offline mode if the app won’t always work offline?

Gogle translate bad
by Cmvflash on 2021/08/05 17:54
google translator is bad because it automatically corrects what you say so if somebody in another language says something that is spelt badly it will automatically correct and that is bad when you tryings to understand them because they might say something else rather then what it automatically corrected one and it doesn’t detect some languages that are supported by apple so if you use a language that isn’t in google translator it will say its english instead of the actual language and it is when it is annoying because if you are trying to understand what you are saying in that language it will not work and there isn’t lots of translators as good as google translator which means you will never know the language where its from and maybe you would want to know but you can’t so thats why google translate is bad because people who speak different language and you tell back to them in they can tell you are using translator and so use a different translator instead of google translate.

by thenumbercruncher on 2021/08/03 10:47
Once again Google has dominated the translation Apps. Overall great service. 😃 I do wish that the App would quickly default to offline mode when I have poor connection. It’s frustrating to have to wait 10 minutes to get a translation when I’ve already downloaded a language. Any other improvements I would want would be minor, such as better translations or being able to use the translations an iOS Apps.

The perfect app for learning languages.
by wavy80sbaby on 2021/07/31 23:16
I give this app 5 stars because it’s very easy and useful to learn languages easy and sufficient. I recommend you download this app!!! If you haven’t already. Google also I would love to give you feedback on how you can better the Google translate App By allowing answers to questions or conversation on the App to pop up. for an example: if I’m learning Spanish and I say Hey my friend how are you? > translate Hola mi amigo como esta ? The answers would be the reply based off of the most answers or the most followed up reply in the language you choose world wide. This would make it way more easier to learn a language faster. Hopefully you understand what I’m saying but if you don’t you can contact me and so I can “Elaborate”. Thanks again Google and enjoy your day.

In China, I have to use many local apps and my ability to read Chinese is limited. Translation of photos, especially screenshots of apps, was amazingly helpful. Google hides this function if it thinks you are in China, but it worked well with vpn for a long time. But, google tweaked some settings and now it hides the functions even with vpn. Sad and disappointing.

Last visit to Germany about 4 years ago, this app was AWESOME. Like awesome in a way where you're just amazed at technology. Now it's just a joke. It's fun to pass the phone around so others can laugh at what an awful job the app does at even recognizing text. I'm pretty sure the results would hardly change if you had it try to translate the dimples on a basketball. Garbage worthless app.

For example, when using the speech function it constantly stops working, saying there is a connection error where there isn't any. Or if my phone tilts a little bit on its side, the audio will stop and I have to start it all over again. This brings me to my next point: editing text. When you try to edit the text youre translating, its difficult to click it to be able to edit it or even find the spot you want to edit since the space is so small and cluttered. A function that will be really helpful is a pause/play button when youre having the text be read allowed and when the text is being read allowed, it doesnt stop if the device tilts to one side.

Accessibility for Instructional Design
by kkennedy555 on 2018/10/24 23:23
Google Translate is now a form of augmented reality and is adapted for educational purposes. This application provides users with tools to translate between languages and they now include an image option; users take a photograph of a sign, piece of paper, or other form of written text and receive a translation in the language of their choice. This augmented reality is ground breaking because this allows online learners to access content in other languages. The application also translates spoken word in real time, which allows all learners to access audio in written form, in their own language, online or in-person. This version of augmented reality that is adapted for education can be utilized in an online learning environment and can be utilized by instructional designers. One of the major challenges with instructional design is selecting the correct tools to build learning experiences. With this application, instructional designers are able to create a course in their own language and can make their lesson accessible to learners by recommending Google Translate for accessibility. I plan to utilize this in conjunction with my online lessons and videos in order to reach more students with diverse abilities and primary languages.
Pages of Translation Lightening Fast, and Reliable!
by rsmith7 on 2019/10/31 14:22
If if you are using anything but Google translate to do your Spanish work for you, you are missing the boat. It translates whole pages of text instantly without error. It uses understandable language for our US - Mexico border area. I was using a different translator when I saw a doctor using Google to communicate with a Spanish only patient. That’s when I learned about Google Translate and switched. For the past two years, I have used a different Spanish translator/dictionary App. It was slow and tedious, only would translate a short paragraph at a time, but worse - it inserted words which were clearly wrong. One time instead of asking my gardener to complete a task, it inserted the word marriage into the sentence! His wife would have not been happy! Luckily I caught it before texting as I had to double- check every phrase. But now I no longer have to worry and each phrase is spot on. ( at least so far I think it’s been!).
Google Translate needs a massive overhaul!
by Lacemaker 427 on 2020/09/29 21:38
FEATURE REQUEST: Since most people are translating from a foreign language to their native language, it would be lovely if you could make your chosen language “stick” at the top of the list. I would prefer to have the languages I use most frequently stick to the top of the list. For me, they are: English, French, German, Latin, Russian, and Spanish. That would solve the annoyance of having to reselect one or more my core languages every time I deviate from my norm. I would like to include Croatian in my core list, but the machine voice for Croatian is unintelligible, even to native speakers because the sound quality is so poor and it speaks far too fast. HEBREW & YIDDISH: It is not possible to learn to speak or translate from either of these languages. Google has NO VOICE, machine or natural, for EITHER of them, nor does it scribe the translation using our common alphabet, Latin. At least then, I could make an attempt at the pronunciation of the words. I would cheerfully give Google Translate 5 stars as soon as these deficits are dealt with.
Hard to Use, Inaccurate, Barely Works
by Lizzie Licious on 2018/12/28 07:06
Many times when I record audio or pictures, the translation doesn’t even come up. The audio is worse since no matter what I do, speaking into the microphone is just a bust. I’ll say something into the microphone, and it won’t do anything. It doesn’t even load, it just indefinitely waits for me to say more. No matter how much I say, real words or not, it doesn’t ever even acknowledge that I’m done talking and if I hit any buttons, the X to close it or microphone button that you’d think would tell what it said, just cancel out of it. Not to mention, taking pics is a nightmare. You have to highlight with your finger the phrases you want translated, but you can’t move the picture around easily. So if you zoom into a certain part, it’s hard to zoom back out, and you can’t move the picture at all without zooming in or out. So if you zoom out in a way that makes the pic go off to the side, well, too bad. Why can’t it just detect the words itself? Or at the very least, why can’t I translate more then one thing in a picture, and do I have to take the same picture again and again just to see everything it says?
Indispensable app
by Mobjack11 on 2018/08/20 17:14
I use many different languages throughout each day, usually just little phrases here and there in my writing. This app is indispensable to me as I work, and the translations seem to just get better and better with each update. I’ve read a few of the negative reviews, and while I’m sure the inconveniences described by these folks are real, it also seems they me be expecting a bit too much. The app is very straightforward in its basic function of translating text that is input by the user. The app is also by Google, and thus it is highly aspirational in its features, and each update seems to bring further enhancements that may or may not be truly useful. I understand how this might get frustrating, but that’s just Google’s style. Eventually the kinks get worked out based on user feedback, which is how I think it should be. As far as a basic free translation app, this one is far and away the best.
Terrible design - using the browser version is better
by NYCJames on 2018/07/06 14:11
I installed this because I frequently use the browser version in Google to translate between English and French and I thought the app would be more convenient. Took me less than a minute to see the flaws in it. It's a horribly designed app - for example, in the browser version you can "switch" the languages around to make the destination language the source language. This is really helpful if, for example, you wish to practice making sentences in a language and then switch them around to compare your sentence to how Google translates it. In the app, there is a switch button but it switches the TEXT between windows instead of just switching which is source and which is destination - so my French sentence goes into the English window and vice versa, meaning they don't get translated. This is either a really stupid bug or an inexcusable design flaw, and to be honest it's entirely what I've come to expect from Google software. There are ALWAYS really stupid bugs and oversights which people complain about for years but which they never fix. Oh well, uninstalling it now.
Good but not what is needed
by Scrabble Lover 44 on 2019/08/31 15:32
This program is useless when trying to overhear peoples conversations or listen to a speech. You can’t tell people to slow down and pause so you can translate each thing they said. That just does not work and is not practical. If I’m watching a show on TV in Chinese it is also fairly useless unless you want to press pause every few seconds. Also when people are talking, you have to tell them to speak slowly and carefully. That is ridiculous. And you have to wait until they have completed a sentence to translate. That is silly. What is needed is for the App to translate as a person is speaking. The user would just wear earphones an be able to listen nearly real time just like a real translator does. Or the translated words would appear as the person is speaking. The function that translates what is written kind of works. It fluctuate the transition consistently until you freeze the frame. Obviously this function needs improving.
Your best companion while traveling!
by PlatinumMedallion on 2019/02/21 19:10
This is hands down the best partner you can have while traveling short of someone who know the local language. It’s just incredible what all it can do. It translates (augmented reality) live in the screen what ever you point at. No, no snapshots, Live, you point it at a Menu in a restaurant or instructions on the wall and it sees Spanish or Japanese or whatever language and you see English or whatever language you like. Then comes conversing with locals. It has a live translator which speaks the local language. My taxi driver knew about this app and used it on his own when tying to communicate with me. Amazing, you talk in English and it speaks it back in Spanish and your local language. Then the other person speaks in Spanish or your local language and it speaks it back to you (and also shows it on the screen) in English. That’s a live 2 way conversation. Something you saw in Star Trek back in the day. The universal translator. No it’s not done yet. Yes you need an internet connection (data plans) for the above two buddies to work. For those who don’t have a data plan or internet access it has offline translations. It won’t speak but will translate anything to anything as you type it in. I’ve travelled 4 continents with this app so far and like I said it’s my best traveling companion.
Super Helpful!
by is maggie okay on 2018/08/16 21:35
I use google translate a lot, as a Korean pop fan, sometimes translations don’t come out and I have to use google translate to translate what I want to see. Using the app makes it SO MUCH EASIER. I love the writing and camera feature. Sometimes the camera doesn’t always find all the words, but the feature is so helpful when im writing and I want to check my work, or if something is in a different language and I want to know what it is. The writing feature is also super awesome because I can write in the word in example, Korean and it translates it for me. Sometimes I do feel like the translations are not very accurate as in when I put the other translation through to check and it comes out as something different, but of course the translations can’t always be correct. Overall, the app is easy to use and I love it! ♥️🤠
Flawed text scanning and translations
by CAD Programmer on 2020/01/31 20:04
This is an amazing translation app, especially the real-time camera mode, straight out of science-fiction! However, it gives different results between camera Instant mode and Scan mode (often the Instant translation is close but a little off, Scan is more accurate but slower). A big problem with Scan mode is random omission of Japanese symbols from the source text and/or incorrect scans (wrong characters), so you’re unable to get a complete translation (frustrating). There are also frequent Google network errors resulting in delayed translation (or none at all), and frequent app crashes. You cannot pinch-zoom the camera, which is a problem on a smaller screen or text sizes. You can share/save only the translation results and not the scanned original foreign language text. I also don’t like how the camera mode always defaults to Instant instead of the last setting used. So although this is a convenient app for translations, it still needs a bit of work to get a higher rating from me.
Awesome, and some recommendation (for now).
by Zzalp on 2020/03/17 03:28
This app is awesome! Been using it for a year now. I have some recommendation tho'. Do you mind adding a feature where it shows various dialect (accent), both in writing, speaking, reading, etc...? For example, Japanese. Japanese have three writing system (Hiragana, Katakana, Kanji) as well as Romaji, which is the Japanese way of writing words in English. So do you mind putting them in category or organizing them if translated? Would be nice if you add footnote for each words that shows like in what way can this word be applicable. This is the recommendation I have for now, and I do think it will change this app greatly feature-wise because there is still confusion because one word can mean many things, and can be used differently depending on context.
I love this app
by Hosintoy on 2018/10/31 11:46
I do not know enough Spanish and English is my primary language. So, I have had this app since Spring 2015 to communicate with my non English speaking friends who speaks only Spanish . It is so useful to show text info to a friend or to email to them. The speaker can talk for you in person. The reverse feature can help you check accuracy in the communicated info before you send email. I think they are getting better. Great in a debate with Someone. Your non English speaking friends can not fake ignorance: don’t know English to you. I have not had to use the picture translate mode much. I phone can Cut, Paste and Send in text or email. I am sure picture translate it just as good for reading materials. I use other language too and almost every day.
Fantastic app

When I had this on my I pad I was so dumb because I didn’t know how to use it,* 2 years later * I was looking for a translator app on App Store and has to be free because I know my dad and mom can’t it for me so I looked and looked most of them wanted me to buy it and I can’t buy it so I looked and looked again and I found this app I download it and when Open the app it was free and you can use A lot of languages in the app, in most apps you could only use one language so that made me happy and the other stuff about it! I love the app! It’s the only app that I like to use for language! I hope other people like the app I saw some bad reviews I don’t know what’s their problem but yea I hope everyone likes it and yea! Thats all I wanted to say so yea, have a great day! :)
Really good for offline translation
by randomkid418 on 2020/08/12 23:21
Google Translate (the app) is much better than the browser version. You can translate offline and that is great. They’ve greatly improved their translations (their Latin is still pathetic, as it has been for many years). It still has problems picking up on nuances and dialects of certain languages. If you are speaking an uncommon language, expect your translation to come out like something from a textbook or hahaha Google Translate. The AI picks up on some slang and common sayings, but it’s sometimes inaccurate. Also, the app drains your battery like nobody’s business. I was translating for ten minutes and lost 14% of my battery. My phone is also inefficient, but all my other apps are much better with battery power than Google Translate.
Works decently well, but has some problems
by Audio-enslaved on 2019/08/23 10:21
Google Translate certainly works quite a bit better than some random online translation service, but there are quite a few things that could be improved. Pros: - Does a generally good (though not perfect) job translating phrases and idioms. In particular, many expressions that mean something in one language but doesn’t make sense in another are correctly translated to the analogous expression in the other language. - Has an offline download feature that lets you translate without reception. This is of course very useful when your phone service doesn’t work overseas. - Allows the saving of translations for future reference, but that doesn’t seem extremely useful. Cons: - One cannot choose to switch between various forms of a phrase for languages that have multiple types of conjugations. For example, you can’t choose to have French use tu instead of vous. - The translation of a word does not show whether the word is masculine or feminine for languages where it’s relevant. - While the offline feature is useful, it’s *extremely* slow. In fact, the online feature can be quite slow sometimes too. I chose to give the app 3 stars because for me, the cons make it quite cumbersome to use this app as a general translation / reference manual.
Was reliable but now its crap
by GTNLisaJames on 2020/10/13 23:46
i used google translate for everything. I live in a nonEnglish speaking nation so it came in very handy. but since the latest update I've had innumerable issues with it. I can't copy and paste it just puts in "TEST" when I paste something. the keyboard is messed up with emojis instead of words in the predictive text lines. the keyboard is laggy and often replaces correctly spelled words with incorrectly spelled ones. the keyboard has a globe symbol at the bottom that opens first with a list of emotions instead of the keyboard. it doesn't auto capitalize the letter of a first word in a sentence. it doesn't input a period at the end of a sentence . many times it doesn't input the letter I type. if i capitalize something i have to hit the shift typea the letter and hit the shift again or it CAPITALIZES EVERYTHING. all the letters appear capitalized on the keyboard regardless if the shift is on or not. it does this in other internet based apps as well but it started with the google translate app.
Are you kidding me???????!!!!!! Best deal ever!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Great in every way!!!!!!!!!!!!

Usually apps with this much deluxe to them are really expensive and you need to save up for them (Blech) so great job on that!!!!!!!! Also, it's really compatible and accessible (And right now it feels like only you guys and apple are the accessible apps) and so easy, and cool!!!!!!!!!! I use it to learn how to write French and also how to talk to my parents in Afrikaans and German which are there home languages, and it is a MUST-HAVE!!!!!!!!!!!!! Now it seems ridiculous that they limit it to 5 stars!!!!! This is worth ********************************************* Thanks Google for making such amazing products, I'm a big fan (even though some of them I don't like as much as others) Continue, definitely!!!!!!!!!!!!!
This App Changed My Life!!!

Being a Kansas girl and falling in love with a man from El Salvador was really frightening for me at first because of the language barrier. I’d taken 3 years of Spanish in high school (YEARS Ago) so when I went to meet his family for the first time I felt like I’d never be able to belong. But, with this incredible translation app I FINALLY am becoming fluent in Salvadoran Spanish!!! I can not only speak for Spanish now, I’m also now able to listen and understand almost everything. And, do you want to know the best part?!?! If I don’t understand a word, phrase, or even a text message from the family I can just open my Spanish Translation App now and type it in, save it, and learn even more Spanish!!! Seriously, get this app NOW!!!! 😊

As a business owner of a home remodeling and renovations company here in North Alabama, this app is priceless to me. I can print out invoices, estimates and contracts in English. Point my hand held mobile personal computer (Cell Phone) at the paper documents and it will translate the words right from the document into any of the available languages (languages have covered all of my needs so far) and make another printable copy of said documents in the languages needed for customers. Email the documents to the customers for them to review, they can digitally sign them and return the original with their signature and then I can make a copy of the signed document and send the customer their copy!! I Love Technology!!! Thank You Google!!!!
Japanese to English is just laughable
by Kuma Reader on 2018/09/23 03:33
I use Google for translating German lieder and Italian operatic arias I am working on into English. Translations are fair to poor. But since I started living part time in Japan, I tried using it to translate Japanese Emails to English. I am moderately fluent in Japanese. The results were hilariously bad. For example katakana “kare” which can be translated as he, curry, boyfriend, etc. is always translated as curry, even though from the context it obviously means boyfriend. My name is Bill, this is katakana “biru” in Japanese but is translated as building in English, even when it is followed by “san” in which case it is obviously a name. Japanese sentences generally omit personal pronouns, which must be supplied in English translations. These are usually obvious from the context, but apparently not to Google’s algorithms, which almost always guess wrong. I can’t believe that ten years into the age of AI, Google translate could be so bad. It makes one wonder about other AI apps, such as self-driving cars.
Good for practicing!!
by BobPaulMc on 2020/09/25 17:27
Over the last few years, I have let my Korean language skills deteriorate. I have started to review my reading, writing, and speaking of Korean using Francis Parks books ( Speaking Korean Books 1 and 2). I do not, however, have any audio tapes to go with these. This app has been a lifesaver. Not only can I hear the pronunciation by typing in the practice sentences, I can also test my own pronunciation by using the English to Korean translator. I know I am pronouncing Korean correctly when Google Translate prints the text in Hangul. Loving it! FYI, for those of you who wish to learn the Korean language, I STRONGLY recommend learning the Korean alphabet first - learn to pronounce each character as a starting point. It will save you a lot of grief later.
Worked well, sadly owned by Google
by thehandofchurchill on 2020/11/06 22:18
I used the program quite a bit and found it to work quite well. That said, I gave the program the four stars it deserved. Unfortunately it’s owned by Google and with ever increasing concerns over their lack of respect for privacy, political pandering, and shady business practices I deleted it as soon as Apple launched their free version. This was the last Google owned product I had on any device. Again, the program worked fine. Once in a great while it would get stuck but that was very rare. It seemed to need constant updates too. In fairness it had a lot more languages than the current Apple version but it also took up a huge chunk of memory. Given time I feel the Apple version will be just as good if not better.
Extremely handy, but not perfect...
by oliver_chan on 2020/08/06 23:54
This is useful when someone speaks to me in a foreign language when I’m abroad, and I always use it to translate text in things. But there are some problems. One is that the US English voice sounds a little robotic,so can you make it sound more natural? Another one is that you can’t save long phrases. Some are very important, but still can’t be saved, therefore I have to save it elsewhere, which isn’t very convenient. An older version allowed you to save long phrases! Why not anymore? Lastly, some languages can’t be spoken in the app. Some of them I really need can’t be read aloud, so I won’t be able to use the conversation function for those languages’ countries. If you fix all these bugs, I will give 5 stars.
Nearly perfect but lacks small features I'd like to see added
by Aberys on 2017/10/17 01:20
When I click on the text box to type, I'd like to see a "Paste" and "Paste and translate" box dialogue pop up without having to click the typing area a second time. Additionally, it would be nice to have a "Translate text from clipboard" option for Force Touch when on the home screen. Currently the only Force Touch capability is "Share Translate". Finally, and this is not for every user as it's a bit more technical, I would like to see a URL scheme so that external apps such as Workflow can quickly open Translate and use its functionality quickly. This is especially useful if one is consistently translating between three languages and needs to switch the language often.
Uh ok..

Ok so, I have had Google Translate for many years. I loved it. A few months ago, I Tried learning Russian. I just thought it would be an interesting language to learn. Everything was awesome. I was writing it down, and barely memorizing it.. 😂 I loved (trying) to learn Russian until the very day we wrote this review. I was going to translate Hi, even though I had already memorized it. If you don’t know, Hi in Russian is Привет. It sort of sounds like ‘preeviat’ 😂, but when I translated it again, it had something different. It gave me this translation, “Здравствуй.” I am not saying it’s a bad app, I mean, it is only one language that I have noticed, but if you see this, can you please answer why it changed? Thank you so much! Bye y’all!
Easily one of the most useful apps on my phone
by Christofer Williams on 2021/01/03 16:13
It’s not perfect. Its reliance on crowd sourcing leads to some questionable translations, especially in languages with fewer native speakers (I’m looking at you, Norwegian and Albanian). And its insistence on using the respectful second person can lead to some laughably formal translations in other languages (hi, French and German!). And while I’m excited that they’ve added basic definitions when you look up a single word, I’m really looking forward to the day when they also provide verb conjugation charts. But it’s the most comprehensive, easy to use translator out there. Most languages can be downloaded for offline use. And nothing else competes for the number of languages available.
Awful but can be useful
by n64king on 2018/08/08 00:54
The main issue with this is if you’re trying to translate certain languages such as Japanese or Chinese, it’s unable to show me what it’s saying because one character can be a big word, but it’ll display that word huge and block out other words. If any words are in a font that aren’t just straight lines then it has a lot of difficulty reading things. Also a strange thing I find is that no matter what language, if it can’t see the words, it’ll put out random words, most commonly it says “mosquito” or “death” which is a bit creepy and odd. It will also pick up other edges of the scenery and translate those non-word images into “mosquito” or “death” or something else not related. I get that we don’t live in 2058 yet but these issues with the app aren’t new. But what else do we have that even works remotely as good? Maybe someday it’ll be better.
Just wanted to say thank you!!

I’m so grateful to you for making this app available for me to use, because I have advanced Parkinson’s disease and one of the things that have been stolen from me with this disease is my ability to speak to my family members and my friends, ( and in case you don’t know much about this incurable disease.) I am going to try to make you aware of some of the things that I have come to call as things that this disease has stolen from me, and so, the reason why I’m so excited about this app is because I am now able to actually talk to my friends and family that I haven’t been able to talk with in over three to four years now! 🤭 Thanks again, Kathi S. Current version default. - don’t like the change
by Yowhuzup on 2018/02/25 14:34
I use google translate more than any app and I have loved it for years. The translation keeps getting better and more accurate. I give the latest revision a 2 because of a change that adds a step to translating during a conversation. The default used to be simply reversed when I selected the “translate to” language as “translate from” (ie when I was using “translate English to spanish” and selected “translate Spanish” and “to English” would automatically appear). Now I have to select both to and from each time- adding an additional step to each sentence. I don’t know why this change was made- if I needed an entirely different language I’d need to select it- it would never be “English to English” or “Spanish to Spanish”. Maybe this is an oversight but please fix it. Thanks very much and thanks for your app.
I LOVE THIS ❤️

My grandma lives in Romania and she is coming to visit in TWO days! But she doesn’t know English and I don’t know Romanian. This app is cool because I can say anything I want in English, and then I tap the sound icon and it says it for me! Goodbye long, confusing words, hello google saying it instead. The only thing I think the devs should fix is that when I put it in Conversation Mode to practice, I have to say the word in English instead of typing it, so sometimes my phone thinks I’m saying a different word then what I want to say. But besides that, I recommend this app and I love it! I just need to remember to bring my phone everywhere and keep it charged so I can talk to my grandma when she visits.
Useful, but be cautious
by Joberkitten on 2019/07/24 18:18
I use google translate all the time and find it useful to define word and phrases. However, when I try using the translations to converse with native speakers, they often do not understand what I am saying because the translation is off or completely out of context. For example “I need some bags” translated into Spanish came out as “I need some pants” when translated back to English the way any normal person would speak. I had this same problem using google duo to learn languages, as the AI translations seem too rigid to mimic how language is used in conversation. The one feature though that is SUPER COOL is how you can take pictures of writing in any language and it will translate the written words for you! This is awesome! So, this app definitely has some redeeming qualities, in my opinion

A must have when traveling
by RobOnMV on 2020/02/05 21:48
Recently back from Colombia, and having the translator made certain encounters almost life saving. I had an accident, and had to rely on the goodness of strangers for assistance in getting to the hospital. Unfortunately I was far from a hospital and it took many people to make it all happen. Luckily I had the translator and everyone was able to understand my situation, and I was able to get to the hospital and all ended up well. In case of a poor data or WiFi I only discovered later than I could have downloaded a language - that would have helped greatly on less intense situations. Next time for sure.
Small Mistakes here and there but a lifesaver
by Natsuyaki123 on 2017/12/10 07:28
Could not live without this app! occasionally some translations are wrong (depending on the language) but that’s as to be expected when there isn’t always an equivalent to it in the same language. i would REALLY love it if the developers would add Slovenian to the text to speech list! it would be SUCH a lifesaver! oftentimes pronunciation can be really tricky in slovene for native english speakers and it’s hard to find many resources that have audio files for the words. it would really mean a lot to me and many others who work hard to find resources to learn it from (which can be few)
Great App Especially In China
by koalaray on 2019/04/09 21:02
We just got back from six weeks in China where we used the app frequently. Sometimes for a simple translation- “do you have almond mile” to a very involved one in the phone store trying to get a Chinese sim card and set up a pay plan. We thought it was magic. We’d say “How much is it to switch the sim card” the app would then say this in Chinese. We’d give the phone to the clerk who would give the answer in Chinese and hand the phone back to us to hear her answer in English. We must have gone back and forth ten times or more. We got the card, set up a plan. Piece of cake.
Update suggestions
by dkdjdjdjffjd on 2019/07/04 07:38
The app is great and helps when I don’t understand a language but I have an idea what if you guys make it a keyboard for iOS that you turn on it the settings like you did food Gboard so when you want to translate something you don’t have to leave the app your on to use it idk about anyone else but I think that would be useful like even if you didn’t turn the hole app based around that just have a setting in the app to let you turn it like that on and off and make it with the allow full access thing that would be cool to see added thank you ~Brian
So cumbersome
by el guapismo 2030 on 2021/04/15 05:38
This version of the app is very unintuitive. It still works, sort of, but when you’re in a pinch you’re spending more time trying to figure out how to use the app than translating. In previous versions you could quickly translate and reverse translate everything. In this version you really have to have your languages set before you start typing anything or else it takes a number of steps to navigate to the language you want. Often, I’ll type a word in Spanish but the app thinks I’m typing a word in English and it tells me that the Spanish word for the word I’ve just typed is the same word. It’s true, but I can’t quickly “flip” between the languages and instead have to indicate Spanish then retype the word. Time consuming without practice.
Saved my Trip

OMG!!! When you are a lone person in Japan and not a very good Japanese vocabulary it’s tough to get around and understand the language. Man this app got me through a couple of conversations that saved my trip and got me back to the airport in time to get on my connecting flight on a very long layover. Is that awesome or what ? I love this app. I learned a few phrases and words that I didn’t know and was able to ask directions and get on the right bus and get back to the airport. But also was able to ask about a few movies I was searching for and a few action figures I was looking for. Awesome app.

This App is like Science Fiction!
by SandMann1966 on 2018/06/27 17:31
We just got back from two weeks in Italy and even though the majority of the people we encountered spoke some English, this app came in handy several times. The app let me communicate with our Uber driver who spoke no English just by speaking in English and it repeated what I said in Italian without pressing any buttons and the driver spoke to me in Italian and it repeated in English with no stopping. The most amazing feature was being able to hold the camera up to a sign a sign and the app translated the it into English magically before my eyes just like something from a science fiction movie. This app is amazing!
This app has been a lot helpful to me
by Singer saj on 2017/09/15 12:54
I was able to teach kids from middle eastern countries using the google translator while they had no English language skills. This app make life easier for people raveling to different countries or for people interacting with people with other languages. There may be some issues here and there while translating English to Arabic but it's gonna do at least 75% of the tasks.. having this app made it very easier for me than not having it.. so kudos to the team at google working on this se beautiful applications and making life easier..
Great for
by OutlierBabe on 2019/09/18 05:25
A wonderful product. And yet, it is impossible that the googs are unaware of the sexism issues they designed into it, and more than dismaying that these have not been corrected. I think all female users of Spanish and Italian translations to/from English should consider a class action lawsuit related to the constant slaps in the face we endure from this app's male-gendrist design: 1) Google assumes and defaults to male subjects: Frequent occasions where the app provides a translation with the pronoun(s) "he, him, his" when "she, her, hers" would be equally valid. There is no reason any longer to use male as the default translation gender. Both sentence versions should be offered by the app, with the female version shown first at least half the time. 2) Google chooses different translations by gender; e.g. the app makes different verb choices depending upon whether the subject of the input sentence is male or female. Example: "She's busy." È impegnata. "He's busy." È occupato. I am beyond irritated. I'm angry at rich powerful google for making half of us put up with what the other half doesn't. Fixing these isn't rocket science.
Severe problems to automatically detect languages.
by NicolasTestingIQ7 on 2018/07/12 13:01
The current version of translate appears to have a problem of detecting the correct language. This hasn’t been a problem in the past. This happens In conversation/dual language mode were no choice/preference for one of the two languages pairs is set. Here, the app would quite frequently “translate” English sentences into English rather then translating them into German or Spanish. This is a very avoidable flaw. For example the spoken sentence “Hello how are you doing?” Is just repeated as “Hello how are you doing?” rather than translated to “Hallo, wie geht es Ihnen?”. A simple comparison of the input sentence and the translation should illustrate this problem to an evaluation / quality control algorithm to assess this problem on your server. No artificial intelligence needed. Please fix this!
Disappointed
by Julius557 on 2018/11/21 02:35
I had high hopes for this but can see right away it will be useless for my needs. When trying to communicate with someone in real time, the last thing you need is favorites or history, yet that keeps popping up and taking 75% of the screen and you cannot easily get out of it. The most important thing is the swap function so once you translate something you swap it to make sure it translates back correctly so you don’t cause an argument or say something stupid but the swap here doesn’t work properly at all it just swaps language positions for the next person to type rather than swapping the translation itself for checking the accuracy of the translation in case you need to reword what you want to say. You got this right in your browser but not in your app. Disappointing.
Want the female voice back for KOREAN
by Why commericals on 2017/10/29 16:17
I have been using the google translate app for over a year and it’s default for English to Korean or Korean to English was always a female voice. About 2 weeks ago, this changed over night without noticed. Now, the Korean voice is default to a male voice. Why did you take away the female voice? I am learning Korean and a female. I would be willing to pay for the app if there is an option for female voices. And if you are trying to improve the app, users should be able to have an option to choose the voice gender. Google taking away the female voice just doesn’t make sense to me because you already have that function to begin with.

Hit or miss
by GabriiellaaAA on 2021/09/12 14:47
Gave 2 stars bc i honestly expected more from Google.

Love it but one thing

I LOVE how you can just translate anything, yes, ANYTHING, on this app! Even translate song lyrics! How cool is that!?!? But it’s missing only one thing. Google can’t sing songs. If Google was able to do this I would give it a 5-star rating. Thanks!

I just checked some words, to translate it to Germany and to Azerbaijan language. Well in Germany it was so so.. but in Azerbaijan language.. it was awful. And it was very simple sentence with 4 words.. and why you use Turkish lang. as Azerbaijan lang. their similar but not same. I mean this problem with all not popular languages unfortunately. I knew it years ago, but never think it still not been fixed.. Good luck. You’re google, i use all browser, map.. and would love to use translator from now on.

Terrible!
by kenneth macauley on 2021/08/04 18:52
It doesn’t translate at all. I typed in ‘pied a terre’ which means small house or apartment in French and it says the English translation is ‘pied a terre’. It didn’t translate it at all. Not even the literal translation which would be ‘foot and earth’. How did google get to be such a big company with such crappy apps?

What is the point of this app if it doesn’t work without wifi. Assuming people download this to travel and need it on the go, this is completely pointless. If you only need to translate things in a hotel with wifi then sure use it.

Good app, but bugs or improvements needed
by Kiba9001 on 2018/02/28 03:56
I really like this app, but there are many bugs and difficulty when using it.

I’ve travelled 4 continents with this app so far and like I said it’s my best traveling companion.

by is maggie okay on 2018/08/16 21:35
I use google translate a lot, as a Korean pop fan, sometimes translations don’t come out and I have to use google translate to translate what I want to see.

This App Changed My Life!!!
by Ms.Sweet'sTruth on 2020/12/29 23:07
Being a Kansas girl and falling in love with a man from El Salvador was really frightening for me at first because of the language barrier. 😊
Accurate Flooring And More!!

Saved my Trip
by awfuladvertisement on 2019/06/14 05:23
