Decibel Ultra
Description
• • • Decibel Ultra • • • - Would you like to know how loud the TV, music or the environment is? - Or your neighbour is too loud? With Decibel Ultra you know it exactly! - Decibel Ultra measures the volume and helps you figure out how big the noise level compared to reference values. - Calibrate with Decibel Ultra all your surround speakers to the same level. Decibel Ultra measure the sound pressure level (SPL) in dB professional frequency weightings: A, B, C, D ,Z (flat) and time weightings: Fast, Slow, Impulse. - Perfect to tune guitars. - Send the results quickly via email. - interested how loud you are? - Ultra-precise measurement of frequencies, a sine of 1000.0 Hz appears really as 1000.0 Hz! - Calibrated to the internal microphone, equipment enclosed headphones, MicW microphone or with line-in. Decibel Ultra is calibrated to standard 94dB at 0776 Vrms / 1000 Hz. Decibel Ultra was calibrated with a Class 1 sound level Meter and calibrator! From device to device, it may still be fluctuations around a few dB (2-3 dB). The app set the device into a special, best possible measurement mode. The automatic gain control (AGC) will turn off to get clean measurement without distort signals. On some older devices, the AGC can not turned off by software, it will then automatically corrected in the calculation. Depending on the unit generation, it varies how sensitive is the device. For example the current iOS devices e.g. iPhone 6 (plus) the internal microphone of an iOS device can not perform any measurement below 30 dB. Measurements below 40 dB with an external microphone or via the headphone jack supplied line output, are not possible with this current devices. The headset that came with the iOS device, cannot measure below about 44 dB. This is a limitation of the current device. But hey, 30 dB is already really sensitive! Highly recommended is the MicW i436. It has a very linear frequency response and dynamic, ideal for precise professional measurements. Continuous noise can be a potential hazard to your health! I would like to thank the company MicW Audio and Synthax GmbH for their kind support. Free version. The ad-free version is called "Decibel Ultra pro" here in the iTunes Store.
The Best sound dB Meter on iOS
by Mistersmileypants on 2019/11/24 13:22
This app is perfect for the sound I have been doing at my church allow us to see how loud we are running a Sunday worship service. The readings are accurate and the frequency spectrum is a huge plus. Well developed and highly recommended!
Awesome app

More settings then I know what to do with. I have tried 25 spl meters and they all want to charge for any weighting other the A. No Apple tax!!!
The perfect app for curiosity!
by Kieran ennis on 2018/12/21 20:44
I got this app because the other DB app became bombarded with full screen ads. I am happy that there is a free version without any time limits on how long you can run the app, and the bottom banner ads are fine with me, it is the full screen ads that I dislike. However due to there only being one full screen ad on startup followed by non stop banner ads, I am very pleased with this. I can leave the app running while it cycles through the banner ads, the developer gets money, and I don’t have to deal with annoying pop-ups! It is wonderful! The translations are a bit confusing , but there is enough there to understand what they are trying to say. The interface and data is displayed wonderfully! Not too simple, but not overwhelmingly complicated, and if you need help, there is a button that explains what everything means. In short it is a wonderful app that successfully has gotten its own spot on my home screen, and it won’t be going anywhere anytime soon. Keep up the good work!

Crashing, needs a fix
by stateslab appleid on 2017/10/24 13:00
I’ve use this app for years, like the display. Unfortunately with the latest iOS update, the splash screen appears and then it crashes. Come on folks people have been complaining about this for a month. You need to fix it.
Crashes now

From perfect to terrible
by Hankyman on 2016/09/23 00:17
On my 5s this was brilliant, only 0.5dB out from a $2k meter. On my new 6s plus it's 30dB adrift. Unusable until its fixed. Please resolve. Thanks.
Doesn't work on IPhone 6s
by Picallen on 2016/08/04 01:15
I be used this app for two years on my IPhone 5s. It worked great and was as accurate as my dB meter . Readings are very high on the iPhone 6. Over 40 dB higher. Even a calibration didn't help.
Beautiful design, packed with information

This is a perfectly designed app. It's very easy to calibrate, has many options, and lots and lots of data. It is very, very professionally designed. The best part: Push the ? on the app and see some great anchors and effect size measures. Beautiful!
Very good app!
by DennisWall66 on 2016/05/03 12:12
I work as a Maintenance Engineer for a hospital. We have a very expensive Db meter that is hard for a novice to use (very complicated) this gets almost exactly the same readings and very easy to use. I love the email function. I would give it 5 stars if you add more instructions for us users that don't have the knowledge or experience to understand all the settings. Thank you for creating the app! I will be buying the Pro version (to rid myself of the adds) are the differences between this version and Pro just the Adds? I'm amazed that this app was even close to our our real, expensive Db meter. It made a believer out of me.
Calibration error??
by planeKrazy on 2016/01/09 17:40
Lately my app is showing 10-20 Db off? Same places, same sounds but now instead of 65db it'll show 85db? How is that possible?

What's really a shame is that people complain about ads. Oh, boo hoo, you have to click the upper-right of the screen every once in a while. People have to make money, guy. Good app!
Excellent!
by Atom954 on 2015/03/02 06:09
After trying all the dosimeter/decibel meter apps on the market, this app is the most accurate and easy to use. It is frequently updated by the developer to support the latest devices and operating systems unlike the vast majority of competing apps. As a tinnitus sufferer, this app is vital to my hearing health to prevent further hearing damage. Thank you for developing and maintaining this app, you have no idea how much it has impacted my life.
Useless
by Luis49 on 2015/03/01 22:19
When an app is developed by very greedy people, it becomes useless. It's a shame that the Apple Store allows developers to post apps containing full screen ads.

Good app RUINED BY ADDS
by Hightower007 on 2014/01/25 17:22
a good app completely ruined by adds. Full screen adds pop up right in the middle of making sound measurements. Due to the full screen adds, this app is completely useless for anyone. So lame, charge for your app and then have adds ruin it. Shame on you guys!

Formerly Great, Now Confusing
by Bozocity on 2013/11/07 11:55
Full-page pop-up ads at each launch are distracting and unacceptable. Must change to static banners. Add Help files to explain all the new features. Scales A, B, C, D, Z... what do they mean? I don't know which to use, or which refers to the app's page of safe decibel limits!
Now with invasive ads
by Ashmoore1 on 2013/11/06 22:51
This app used to be good but is now spoiled by invasive full page ads and a really annoying high ad refresh rate for the bottom banner. Devs have to eat but this is just silly. Sadly the pro version is way overpriced. I am switching to another app.

by Maine Coon Kat on 2013/10/23 16:49
Decibel meter doesn't move after initial measurement on my iPad or iPhone 5 both with iOS 7. It worked on both before the upgrade. It continues to work on old iPod touch with version 6.1.3 (the latest for that iPod).
Needs upgrade!

Really I don't know much about this stuff but I did see a web page talking about this dude's 18 in sub that hits a "whooping" 134 dB. Well I'm currently riding in a car with the volume on low and no substantially great speakers and according to the app I'm hitting 70-85 dB. Something just doesn't seem correct to me...
Many features, many bugs
by mack_r on 2013/03/05 00:59
You get what you pay for? Lots of potential, but this app is relatively confusing, with a bad UI, and sadly, the "record a sample" feature (that is intended to include the data log into an e-mail) appears to be broken, at least in recent versions of iOS. That said, if you're looking for a free sound metering app, this one has some solid features, for free. Just takes some patience to figure out its quirks.
Records nothing.
by melmilligan on 2013/02/20 14:58
Looks like the person who wrote this app doesn't care that much about it. It's near the end of February 2013, and you still get a blank email after recording a sample. That's the main reason I picked this app. Without it it's fairly useless to me. Doesn't seem as if the developer cares, since people have been complaining about it since at least November 2012.

Very helpful to find loud places and a quick response to fix noise problems
Not particularly accurate
by Morac on 2012/03/01 02:48
The new version is supposed to be calibrated for the iPhone 4S, yet when I exhale about a foot from the mic on my 4S, it registers at 93 dB which is supposed to be louder than a car horn. I have a real meter and the values this app reports don't match at all. Likely it's not weighted correctly.
Uneducated
by TheStoke on 2012/02/25 22:51
Try using a real decimeter. It works the same as this app only can cost up to $100. The closer you are to the source the louder it will be. So if a band from 50 yards reads 100db. Don't be surprised when your talking voice is the same at 2 inches. Do a little research before you post negative comments. I am a sound engineer. This app works nearly as well as many decimeters do.
Not accurate
by MintUsr on 2012/02/25 21:31
I was at a concert and wanted to measure how many decibels the obnoxious band had their guitar up to and it said 100, however when I am sitting here talking at a tolerable volume it jumps up to 100. Never surpassing it. I'm no sound expert but that doesn't seem right.

Great for recording noise levels!
by tgmauch on 2011/07/27 19:21
This app is great for recording noise levels and then emailing them to yourself. For me, the data export feature was essential as it allowed me to generate graphs of noise levels. And ... It's free! Awesome! Add dBA filtering, and it will be SUPER-awesome!
Processor attacking bug!!!
by Anti-Matter87 on 2011/07/19 00:55
Great app, but after you run the app your processor will run at 80% until your battery dies really fast. I turned off the app and even deleted it, but my processor stayed running at 80 %. the only way to fix it is to restore your iPod to a previous state. Don't download till the bug is fixed! But it is a great app.
Good app for the price
by DobrePiwo on 2011/05/22 15:51
For the ppl who complain about not being able to turn it off. When you exit the app double tap the home button and turn off the app from the list. Just like delete.

by ChivalryD on 2011/04/03 10:18
Can't sleep due to husband's snoring so as I'm lying in bed grumpy I wonder just how loud it is, and lo and behold there is an app for that, and free to boot. If I can't sleep I might as well amuse myself and have statistical evidence for my grouchiness tomorrow morning. Thanks!

Love the idea and interface....but accurate?
by ss ZHO on 2011/03/05 07:29
I love the idea of this app. The interface is very nice also. And is FREE!!! It lacks in accuracy however. :/ I am an automotive test engineer. I have experience evaluating the noise levels of automotive products. I decided to test this app out compared to a sound level meter (only took a very quick walk around lab and office). I found that the numbers did not match up very well (I believe it was within 10 dB, however). I think the strongest reason for the inaccuracy was due to lower frequency sounds. To properly measure low frequency, a larger microphone is needed. I dont know the size that comes with the iphone, but I can not imagine it being that large. My recommendations for future updates: Consider allowing different frequency weighting scales (dBA is very popular). Consider a weighting scale for the iphone microphone (if mic does not pick up lower frequency very good, you may be able to digitally amplify the expected signal at that frequency) Consider specifying the frequency range that this app is good for.
Too good to be true....
by S-2 on 2011/02/26 18:04
This app would have been perfect, but don't download unless you want your battery capacity to be cut by 80%. There is a major flaw unrelated to accuracy- it runs the processor constantly whit no way turn it off - download it and see what I mean - you 'usage' will equal your 'standby' so have fun recharging your phone every 8 hours..... Forget about having any standby time while this app sits on your phone.
Best and free

by Uncle G. on 2011/02/09 22:28
Attractive, easy to read interface, with both peak and average meters and a bar graph. You can adjust the sampling rate and sensitivity. I can't vouch for the accuracy, and it seems to read a bit high. My bedroom at night with only my breathing reads 45 dB! That seems a bit excessive, but I have no way to calibrate this with a known meter, so I can't say for sure. As seems to be the case with "free" apps, the banner ads on the bottom are rather annoying. I'd be willing to cough up a buck not to have them. The unkown (and possibly questionable) accuracy, and the ads prevent me from giving this a full five stars. Oh yes, one more problem. Pressing the "home" button doesn't shut this off! It will continue to run in the background, rapidly draining your battery. This needs to be fixed ASAP.

not bad
by Hawk wind on 2011/01/08 21:54
this app is not bad for a free app! have to put it though some tests to say how well it works, but first impression is, It's ok. UI could be a bit more Cleaned up. the meters themselves don't look to bad, but the controls around them could look nicer... but free is free. :)
Just what I was looking for.

Looks like the person who wrote this app doesn't care that much about it. It's near the end of February 2013, and you still get a blank email after recording a sample. That's the main reason I picked this app. Without it it's fairly useless to me. Doesn't seem as if the developer cares, since people have been complaining about it since at least November 2012.

by Morac on 2012/03/01 02:48
The new version is supposed to be calibrated for the iPhone 4S, yet when I exhale about a foot from the mic on my 4S, it registers at 93 dB which is supposed to be louder than a car horn. I have a real meter and the values this app reports don't match at all. Likely it's not weighted correctly.

Well I'm currently riding in a car with the volume on low and no substantially great speakers and according to the app I'm hitting 70-85 dB. Something just doesn't seem correct to me...

But it is a great app.

this app is not bad for a free app! have to put it though some tests to say how well it works, but first impression is, It's ok. UI could be a bit more Cleaned up. the meters themselves don't look to bad, but the controls around them could look nicer... but free is free. :)

It made a believer out of me.

by mack_r on 2013/03/05 00:59
You get what you pay for? Lots of potential, but this app is relatively confusing, with a bad UI, and sadly, the "record a sample" feature (that is intended to include the data log into an e-mail) appears to be broken, at least in recent versions of iOS. That said, if you're looking for a free sound metering app, this one has some solid features, for free. Just takes some patience to figure out its quirks.

by TheStoke on 2012/02/25 22:51
Try using a real decimeter.

Great app

Love it
Works and it's free!

This is a great app, i would recommend this free app over the other free apps because this actually works and it lets you adjust it.
Sweet app for the price!
by Mutatron on 2011/01/12 06:43
I just used this today to decide against taking a window cubical. My current cube measures about 55 dB but the other one is under a vent that raises the level to about 62 dB. No bueno!
not bad
by Hawk wind on 2011/01/08 21:54
this app is not bad for a free app! have to put it though some tests to say how well it works, but first impression is, It's ok. UI could be a bit more Cleaned up. the meters themselves don't look to bad, but the controls around them could look nicer... but free is free. :)
Just what I was looking for.
by Akap.css on 2010/12/31 14:50
Nice interface, great info on typical levels of various noises. Readings seemed accurate based on info provided, but I don't have a real DB meter to compare. Good job guys... Now if you could only do something about the backlight whilst leaving it on for extended periods. But this is a minor issue. Thanks!
Seems to work
by RandomString on 2010/12/20 02:55
(The bad news: my office is over 60 dB. Need to replace my server.)
Awesome app
by jom jones 130 on 2019/06/01 14:29
More settings then I know what to do with. I have tried 25 spl meters and they all want to charge for any weighting other the A. No Apple tax!!!
Works!
by Mia awesome on 2018/08/05 22:46
It’s free, it works(unlike most other free apps)and has repeatable results. Great for spot checks. Want more? Pay for it!
Scam

Forces you to watch an ad, and then doesn’t work. Must have cellular for it to work.
Uneducated
by TheStoke on 2012/02/25 22:51
Try using a real decimeter.
Love the idea and interface....but accurate?

After trying all the dosimeter/decibel meter apps on the market, this app is the most accurate and easy to use. It is frequently updated by the developer to support the latest devices and operating systems unlike the vast majority of competing apps. As a tinnitus sufferer, this app is vital to my hearing health to prevent further hearing damage. Thank you for developing and maintaining this app, you have no idea how much it has impacted my life.

Sweet ..... But...
by DJ BrianNJ on 2013/11/01 02:54
Very nice layout. Easy to read. Simple to use.... Ok ok the, But..... It doesn't remember that you set the mic to -10 after you read the info page it defaults at zero. Then it's very hard to get the offset to an "exact" value. Over all it's a great app :) I recommend using this one. Thanks.. DJB
Beautiful design, packed with information
by Cecil128 on 2016/07/03 17:41
This is a perfectly designed app. It's very easy to calibrate, has many options, and lots and lots of data. It is very, very professionally designed. The best part: Push the ? on the app and see some great anchors and effect size measures. Beautiful!
Good app for the price

For the ppl who complain about not being able to turn it off. When you exit the app double tap the home button and turn off the app from the list. Just like delete.
Works well!
by KidCoyle on 2015/03/02 11:50
What's really a shame is that people complain about ads. Oh, boo hoo, you have to click the upper-right of the screen every once in a while. People have to make money, guy. Good app!
Excellent
by BuckWill on 2014/03/13 02:34
I use this app along side my calibrated official sound level meter to document the readings and they are always ON with the calibrated meter. I would request that the frequency also get documented with the sound level.
Calibration error??
by planeKrazy on 2016/01/09 17:40
Lately my app is showing 10-20 Db off? Same places, same sounds but now instead of 65db it'll show 85db? How is that possible?
Records nothing.
by melmilligan on 2013/02/20 14:58
Looks like the person who wrote this app doesn't care that much about it. It's near the end of February 2013, and you still get a blank email after recording a sample. That's the main reason I picked this app. Without it it's fairly useless to me. Doesn't seem as if the developer cares, since people have been complaining about it since at least November 2012.
Eh
by JJSTIFFS on 2013/04/04 13:30
Really I don't know much about this stuff but I did see a web page talking about this dude's 18 in sub that hits a "whooping" 134 dB. Well I'm currently riding in a car with the volume on low and no substantially great speakers and according to the app I'm hitting 70-85 dB. Something just doesn't seem correct to me...

I’ve use this app for years, like the display. Unfortunately with the latest iOS update, the splash screen appears and then it crashes. Come on folks people have been complaining about this for a month. You need to fix it.

Useless
by Luis49 on 2015/03/01 22:19
When an app is developed by very greedy people, it becomes useless. It's a shame that the Apple Store allows developers to post apps containing full screen ads.
