Greedy Premium Broadcasting Service
by TeX King on 2019/11/17 15:03
The app doesn't seem to let me watching TV from my cable subscription. It requires membership with requires a payment. This is rather greedy. Many other app, like CNN and CNBC, let me watch TV programs using my cable subscription. Even if we Ignore cable subscription, the "Public Broadcasting Service" is supposed to serve those who do not have money to pay for TV service. With the requirement of paid membership, the PBS does not serve those who do not have money. This is not public service. The name of PBS is now meaning "Premium Broadcasting Service." At times I was thinking of donating money to PBS, but I held back because I realized that my donation serves only those who are rich enough to pay for PBS membership. The donation will never benefit those poor kids. I am happy to donate to help the poor. But, what's the point to donate to help the rich?

by Fools On Parade on 2019/11/15 03:20
Despite reading all the negative reviews I gave this app a shot because I love PBS documentaries. Did not encounter any issues the previous reviewers mentioned - they must have fixed it during recent updates. I highly recommend this app to anyone. If it makes a difference, I use an iPhone 8 on t-mobile network. Enjoy!
New App not work on ipad2?

so far I cannot get new app to work on ipad2. the old app was fine. It just never opens. very disappointed
Ads causing delays?
by snb99 on 2019/11/13 04:04
Good content, good streaming - if you can get to it. The advertising load can take over a minute. Ridiculous!
Access excellence
by Lafemmeartist on 2019/11/12 08:25
Hmmmm... After a few years of watching OPB on the app, there are persistent or recurring issues, even though I stay current with the updates. For example, video instability on "This Old House" is chronic; the video digitizes and images stay out-of-focus. It's not pleasant. This is preceded by the program taking forever to simply open. Reading a handful of the other comments, it seems PBS/OPB, there is a problem. Or two. Additionally, design is not good technology. All the dark colors and background in the app, is just gloomy. Not a fan.
Oversees support?
by nams291 on 2019/11/10 18:04
Watching PBS with my family was a highlight of my childhood. I was therefore very excited to discover the PBS app, especially given that I now live oversees, and any link back home is something special. Too bad things aren’t that easy....the message “This video is not available in your region” pops up whenever I try to watch something. Any chance that might change in the future?
No share button??
by B.O'Connor on 2019/11/06 21:16
Appreciate the app, but you’ve got to have a share button on every video, it’s really surprising that’s not an option.
Used to work
by YDPopov on 2019/11/06 05:29
You need an app that works.
Failed Login
by Allerjenn on 2019/11/05 15:17
Last night, after spending $60 to get access to dptv passport programming, I successfully created and logged into my account. I was able to watch two programs before going to bed. This morning, however, each time I try to login all I get is an error message. I’ve tried updating the app and uninstalling/reinstalling. Neither produced any results. I am beyond frustrated.
Latest update doesn’t work
by KolyaK on 2019/11/05 01:35
Dumb and as useful as a brick. Launch the app and instantly get a connection error notification from there is no escape! The old version worked fairly well on my iPhone 7. Guess the time has come to cancel my monthly donations to WETA.
Great content, App could be better
by MikeG222 on 2019/11/04 23:51
I wish we could control how Favorite Shows are sorted or I wish the app would sort you’re favorite shows my usage. I have about 14 favorite shows and the PBS Newshour is the one I access the most. However, Newshour is buried in the See All area of my favorites. It doesn’t feel like this app really gets to know you and what you prefer which is unfortunate and I’m readily expected of media apps.
Great redesign
by Klitzkrieg on 2019/11/04 17:14
Content is great as always, design is much nicer now too

DO NOT BUY THE PASSPORT!
by Beachwalker40 on 2019/10/28 21:51
Looked at the PBS app and they have many shows listed that we wanted to see. We purchased the app and when we tried to watch some of them the sight said they were not available due to licensing, etc. WHY are they listed on the sight then. Classic switch and bait. Dishonest. Expected better of PBS.
Could be better
by JP4561 on 2019/10/26 17:03
I stream PBS on a Roku and not through the app. But I wish the app was more like YouTube’s. Specifically: - I’d like to be able to link the app to the Roku and use the app as a remote. Like with YouTube. - I’d like to use the app to create playlists and have the ability to auto play the next video in the playlist. Some videos like PBS Space Time are short and having the ability to make a playlist of them would be nice. - I’d the ability to select a video on the app and cast it to Roku. - I’d like it if the up/down button on the remote would trigger the time elapsed bar to appear so I know how much time remains in a show. Currently you have to hit ‘pause’ to trigger it. Basically, just make it work like YouTube’s. Thanks
Chromecast
by P.F. Arts on 2019/10/21 20:40
Still having issues with chromecast connection... the little symbol to connect won’t even show up. I know this app is the problem because if I open up Netflix or any other streaming app it allows me to connect to chromecast immediately.

App has many problems
by Anna617 on 2019/10/18 14:21
Figure it out and fix it please! Keep getting a message that “Video Error—resource unavailable”. WHY! I pay to see these episodes and then can’t get them, very frustrating!
Wonderful shows, horrible app!
by mbira on 2019/10/17 02:09
You can’t leave a show and then come back where you left off. You can’t find programs. The app won’t start playing. I could go on, but why? PBS has done nothing to fix this app as far as I can tell, because nothing changes. If there was another way to stream these wonderful programs, I’d be using it. It just feels as if PBS doesn’t give a *** about its subscribers.
Does not remember where I am
by aksurhehe on 2019/10/16 15:56
If I stop mid-episode it re-starts from beginning, after forcing me to watch commercial again. Glad to see we are now able to go back 10 seconds. Is there a reason we cannot skip ahead 10 seconds. I know you do not have a lot of money to develop a fancy app, but this seems like simple stuff...
Horrible
by Perpetual nightmare on 2019/10/15 23:34
If the video loads it’s a miracle. If it plays all the way through, a bigger miracle. It has no idea where you left off so you must start over each time. The worst app I’ve ever seen.
Worst app ever
by why hanges on 2019/10/15 21:46
When you find your program, it is almost impossible to get it to play. If you hit the play arrow the background screen expands and freezes. You have to back out of the app and start again. YouTube has it right.
Great App...needs small tweaks
by carolinagirl843 on 2019/10/15 16:01
love the app for the most part. my only complaints are if I leave the app in the middle of watching a program when I return the video starts back at the beginning and I have to search for where I left off. I’d also like to see a skip ahead option.
Does not play video
by TxTrey on 2019/10/15 04:08
I haven’t used my acct in quite a while and the app would not load titles correctly. I reinstalled the app and it looked like it might work but the entire app stops responding when I choose a video to launch. I checked current reviews and it seems like everyone is having same issue.
New episodes?
by frustratedinmaine on 2019/10/15 01:37
New episodes are available on one device and not others. No option to update app to reconcile this. Also tagging and categorizing is a mess. Antiques roadshow specifically is very hard to navigate and is stagnant for long periods of time. Love PBS and pay for the app so it’s extremely frustrating.
Activation

I doesn’t not let me activate the app for my Apple TV the activation page just clears the code when I press continue.

Used to work great, now fails to remember pause points
by Jpsl3 on 2019/10/11 14:19
I used to love this app but some recent update seems to have broken it. Now every time I pause a program mid play it doesn’t remember where I paused it. Then I am forced to watch a stupid ad for 30 seconds even though I am a subscriber. And the ad is usually for the PBS App which I have already downloaded (obviously since I am watching on it) so it is so stupid to show that. Your app used to work properly and remember my pause points. Please fix it. It would be great if that even worked across devices but I would settle for it working on even one device.
Great content, app needs improvement
by ejmartin on 2019/10/11 13:51
The app does not remember where you were when you left off on a show. It is very frustrating. Also it would be great if you could watch offline as well.
No download option too many charge options
by N/A 1234 on 2019/10/10 03:11
No download option Too many charges for most content even when it was just released like Ken Burns. I wish you would just partner with Netflix or Amazon Prime.
Doesn’t remember where you left off
by brandijean925 on 2019/10/10 01:50
So frustrated! I’m watching lengthy episodes of ‘Country Music’ and it doesn’t remember or save where I left off. I can’t always sit at the screen for the full episode and I end up completely aggravated.
Used to work
by Majesticu on 2019/10/09 10:43
I have had no problems with the app until now. It shows I can play the episodes, but when I push play, it gives me a blank screen.
App will not open

No problems streaming on Apple TV! Easy to set up a free account, love the new series Now Hear This.
App is decent ...
by 0101101z on 2019/10/05 00:29
but the ads are infuriating. I will not pay for access and also be forced to watch ads.
Too bad streaming isn’t as great as the content
by ncaldweii on 2019/10/02 00:49
On iPad, streaming a one hour show, almost always get a sudden frozen screen and then a video error message. Have to quit app and start from the beginning because episode doesn’t resume play. Rather annoying. Especially since I am a supporter and have OS and app up to date. Get it together PBS. I love you otherwise.
iOS 13 Stops Window from Minimizing While Viewing
by OneBuddah on 2019/10/02 00:16
Would like to again enjoy other apps on iPad Pro while watching PBS videos as before. Since September 2019 update for iPads this isn’t working. I’ve deleted and reinstalled the app and it’s still not working properly! And why does this app not pick up where I left off in a video, like Netflix for example. I go from device to device while traveling, so this would be VERY CONVENIENT and less time consuming. Thank you for such great entertainment, worth the $5 per month donations.
Just Freaking Awesome
by RacerXfile on 2019/10/01 01:49

Awful app!
by Fiddler109872345 on 2019/09/30 02:26
The functionality of this app is a constant nightmare. It’s a good thing that I really want to watch these shows. I can’t go back 10 seconds without it starting all over from the beginning. Even though I’m logged in, it never remembers where I am in the video or series. Passport subscribers deserve better.
Disappointing app
by Joninportland on 2019/09/27 01:17
Love the content, but this app fails in some basic ways: remembering what you have watched and where you left off, rewinding and forwarding, and consistently allowing multitasking.
Doesn’t synch
by khooper_0919 on 2019/09/26 19:37
I have a Passport Account and and logged in to several devices - iPhone, iPad, Fire, but his app does not synch across devices. Not even the Viewing History is updated across devices. In fact, it doesn’t even keep track on the SAME device - I am constantly having to remember my place and search through a show when watching on my iPhone. If you leave it for more than 30 min or so, you have to start all over. Part of the reason I paid for the Passport was so this wouldn’t happen. It’s very frustrating!
Have to restart paused videos from the beginning
by Zedefeg on 2019/09/25 03:10
If I pause a video and walk away for awhile, when I return I have to start the video all over again, including the upfront ads.
?
by nut taken on 2019/09/25 02:18
Terrible app. Very disappointing given the quality of the sponsor. My experience with trying to access programs I support as a contributor will reduce my level of giving.
Frustrating
by antrobug on 2019/09/25 02:02
I can’t get PBS without cable, so I subscribed in order to watch the shows I have missed through this app. Every time I sign on it kicks me out and I am unable To watch the passport shows Even though I have paid to be a member! Don’t subscribe until they get this fixed!
Really mediocre — OUTRAGEOUS management slacking
by Left Coasting on 2019/09/23 17:56
For me, the most frustrating issue (of MANY frustrating problems) is the failure to allow one to pause/stop a viewing midway and return to the same scene later. That’s ridiculous. PBS is clearly NOT devoting enough resources to this Application, despite constantly pushing with their Passport sales pitch. But I suspect that senior management says internally to the IT / Web team not to worry: “Our audience members are wimps, and mostly aging boomers. They won’t complain, and they have nowhere else to go.” For $60+ a year, we deserve a state-of-the-art App! I’m sure the tiny App team is working as hard as they: this is a management gap! Maybe senior management salaries could be garnished to repair this App.
How do I hate thee?
by fletcherina on 2019/09/21 03:51
It’s terrible! Use the DVR, use the VHS, but whatever you do, don’t use this horrible app. It doesn’t remember where you stopped, it only works as “play,” and even pausing it can send you into paroxysms of “what the hell!” PBS, either make the app usable or withdraw it. Right now, it just makes a fool out of those of us who try to use it. And why the holy hell do i need to connect through social media? Do you have any idea how much I hate that?
Intermittent sound?!
by ESS1 on 2019/09/21 01:46
Come on PBS. I can’t even watch the Newshour without intermittent sound cuts. The timing of the cuts happens every time someone is about to say something important, leading me to believe someone is doing it intentionally. It makes your normal fine programming impossible to watch. I hope you get to the bottom of this and quickly.
Fix pause button and playing from where left off
by PBS Best Shows on 2019/09/18 06:23
Please make sure that with each update to the app that the RESUME PLAYBACK feature works!! It is down again with this latest app update. (9-17-19) Another update on my review. Please remember to update the app when new apple updates come out. It looks like I will have to wait a few more months again until you fix the resume playback feature yet again. Now the pause button doesn’t work, and occasionally ads get stuck too. I understand if shows have to expire-I would love to be informed how long they will be around if they are set to expire- they used to let us know more consistently. I mostly only watch PBS so please fix soon! The below is the same from my previous review. I was so happy when they fixed the playing from where the show left off feature last year, but a few weeks ago, it stopped working again! Please fix it-now there is no way to get back to my show except to memorize the time where it left off. Now I can’t watch as many from my watchlist because I can’t remember all of those different times. The pause button was never fixed! I am happy to support the station and enjoy the extra length of time I have to watch my shows by supporting PBS. I primarily watch PBS app for my entertainment, and have loved watching the many choices of shows. However, it looks like the creators of the app need to stay up with updates. I tolerated the change when the pause button shrunk so that it became unusable. I even found a way to watch the shows from where I left off after the mid April 2017 iOS update evidently killed the usability of that feature. I have been able to use the watchlist feature well, and have appreciated the changes to that over time. The search feature is wonky and the results don't allow the user to always pull up the show from the list. Using the watchlist feature tends to help that. Please change the following right away: 1) Resume ability to watch from where we left off instantaneously. Currently, I figured out that if I wait about 1 minute to let my iPad screen shut off, then log back in, the video will pull up, but this is time consuming and off-putting to new users of the app. Also, some ads stop playing or never launch when trying to start the show from the beginning. 2)Make the pause and 15sec back buttons usable again. They need to come up in the center and be large and responsive. Currently, they are tiny and in the lower left corner. I have to repeatedly hit them from different angles for them to work. This wasn't as big of an issue until the long delay to replay from start (#1 fix) started happening, since I used to just close the show instead of trying to mess with the pause button. These are crucial fixes to restore usability of the app, and thus generate more support for PBS in general, since the programming is top notch and I would love to see it continue. Most people need to pause and come back to watching shows multiple times in our busy lives. I don't even have a regular TV and watch everything through my iPad. Thanks again for listening and fixing problems. I keep waiting in great anticipation for the next app update.
Apple TV Update Request

Love PBS, ‘Glad to be able to stream, ‘Hate this app
by D. Poole on 2019/09/13 18:56
If you attempt a short rewind to get something you missed,, knowing how far back you’ve gone involves reading two tiny timestamps on screen, stopping at the desired point, resuming play, then waiting a variable and lengthy number of seconds for the navigation bar, program name, and overall length to clear and the screen to brighten. Unless you go way back, by the time that has happened, you’ve often missed what you wanted to repeat. Those who designed and now maintain this app apparently have never themselves even tried to use it. It’s sad, PBS, given the availability of non-PBS streaming apps that navigate easily and that PBS users pay a Passport “donation” to gain access.
Sooo frustrating
by A frustrated observer on 2019/08/27 00:42
It is so frustrating that if I pause watching a show, it sometimes remembers where I am when I come back and sometimes not. It also does not offer or auto play the next episode. I am a Passport member, so I am logged in. I also cannot use the app on my Samsung Smart TV or through the XBox on my tv because it is not available on those platforms., so I am stuck watching on my phone.
Last update broken
by MN…... on 2019/08/21 12:09
App starts with a pop up “PBS is experiencing technical difficulties please try again”. App will not work no matter how many times it is opened.
Can’t watch shows you WANT to
by wtshdjonbcs on 2019/08/21 04:16
I seriously don’t understand the point of this app. It’s seems like the app version of click-bait. After paying $5.99 p/mo for the subscription to watch your favorite shows that they advertise you can watch with the app, you click on a show you’d like to watch only to learn you have to be a “passport member” to watch. Which costs MORE money. And this includes pretty much anything actually worth watching. If they removed all the passport-only shows there’d be no content left hardly. Such a run around.
Can’t cancel subscription
by Sjzp on 2019/08/11 03:38
Once you’re signed up they make it impossible to cancel. I’ve been trying to cancel since the passport began and STILL am paying for it. I don’t know what to do! It’s such a scam. Just awful people doing this.
Buggy and freezes
by SadApUser on 2019/08/05 17:09
Mild improvement over the PBS website which was a nightmare to search for Passport content. Freezes consistently at the ads, beginning of video selections.
Erg! Frustration!
by AmandaRabbit on 2019/08/03 01:29
My biggest frustration is that the app doesn’t start playing the video I’ve selected, being though I’m a subscriber. It seems to just freeze. I haven’t yet figured out what the problem is, but I will most often get a black screen with nothing playing after I select the show I want to watch. Some it will then go to a 30 second ad and sometime it’s just frozen with black screen. The second biggest frustration is that if I pause an episode, I can’t easily find where I left off. Unfortunately the app doesn’t remember where I stopped the video. There’s a rewind-10-second button but not any kind of fast forward.
What App? I haven’t found one.
by Catmonster2 on 2019/07/30 07:53
Too very bad that the rating is only a 2.8! So sad. And this is the only app I find for WPBT? And you wonder why I am not a member?! Money hawking sometimes is every month before new shows you have. And so other things I care not to say. Not very pleased. Thank you.
Buffering, Sputtering, Fits and Starts - Terrible
by BJC-H on 2019/07/26 23:00
I recently joined Passport in order to watch programs/episodes I have enjoyed and some I missed entirely. While the PBS content is always of high quality, the video app is TERRIBLE. I used the on-line “report a problem” on a couple of occasions which has its own issues. Also, I sent an on-line message to the local PBS affiliate WEDU in Tampa. I received a couple of emailed suggestions to update my month old computer, which I followed to no avail. I will not be renewing my Passport unless this can be fixed.
Does not resume even with paid subscription.
by Igdujgf on 2019/07/12 21:01
Any browser you have on your phone will offer a better AMERICAN EXPERIENCE than this lame video app. Do not download this waste of digital space and precious personal viewing time is my ALL THINGS CONSIDERED opinion.
I love PBS
by bgaffe on 2019/07/12 00:59
PBS is my favorite channel. I would much rather donate to PBS and get PBS streaming than pay for any other streaming service. I don’t have any major issues with the app, except one thing. The watch list display used to include the expiration date, but not anymore. Without having the expiration date displayed, I am missing out on viewing several things in my watch list because they expired, unbeknownst to me. Developers, PLEASE return the expiration date to the watch list display. Then I could give this app 5 stars.
Squandered opportunity
by Bone Machine on 2019/07/09 04:49
Public television should be free, over the air or via internet streaming. Having a paywall for content feels wrong, and even then, the content is extremely limited. I’d be ecstatic to donate to gain access to a complete catalogue of American Experience documentaries, but there are only a handful available even if you pay. It’s a wasted opportunity to provide quality educational content when there’s so much inaccurate garbage available for free on the internet these days. Very disappointing.
App for Apple TV does not show code for activation
by Jigar on 2019/07/08 05:01
On iOS 13 on Apple TV the app does not show a code in step 2: "Enter code: (blank)" Lots of reinstall and reboot attempts did not help. Please fix! When it works, it's a pretty good app as it has all the Passport programs available to members and donors. And PBS has done great documentaries.
So disappointing
by Snowbirdie on 2019/07/07 20:50
How could PBS which prides itself on quality programming allow its name to be attached to this horrid app? To say the app is primitive at best would be too kind. The Pbs advertising that run in preprogrammed mode constantly stops and starts or doesn’t run at all without going to the “LearnMore” option which somehow releases the ad for a 5 to 10 second run. Finally you get through to the episode. And of course a resume feature if one does get to play the chosen episode is none existent. Shame on you PBS. If you can’t afford to have it fixed and run like a modern app should, then lease the rights to someone like amazon or Netflix who know how to do it. Even at $5 a month it is just not worth the frustration. I’ll get a DVD at the library.
Great programming, terrible app
by abcde59364 on 2019/06/24 06:40
As others have said, the app freezes, hangs up, half the time doesn’t work at all. Very frustrating. PBS should be offering a credit to its customers, who are definitely not getting what they paid for. It’s particularly bad and unreliable on mobile devices. Booooo, PBS.
Very poor app
by Waiting to lose on 2019/06/24 04:06
So I’m paying for access to PBS shows but there are missing seasons and missing episodes to many many of the shows on here! Also, everytime I leave the PBS app it cancels everything out so when I go back in I have to go through a bunch of crap to find the show/episode I want and it doesn’t have playback which means I have to watch an ad every single time and then I have to fast forward to find the spot in the show I was at. It’s so freaking annoying! I’d recommend finding some alternative way to watch your favorite shows until they can fix this😡
Crashes, and late NewsHour ep
by J. Cheng on 2019/06/23 03:26
Crashes frequently, and PBS NewsHour post episodes up on YouTube earlier than this app. (Should be simultaneous!) And ads on videos? Well that’s ok, but why not try a donation button first? And, try asking Apple to give a discount for in-app donation. (Taking 30% is robbery, Apple! Especially when swiping money from an actually good-for-the-society organization like PBS.) Should also offer advertisement free experience for people who donate.
A shame about so many poor reviews
by TopTramp on 2019/06/22 05:27
I love PBS but am ashamed when I see that the app has so many poor reviews. So much talent, effort and time spent on developing good shows. Apparently not much emphasis placed on quality of presentation on streamable media.
Crashes and burns

Show episodes mislinked

We’ve been using the app for about a year now and it has been getting better. However the people running the app architecture to the video database continue to make some pretty basic errors. Option for Live TV
by Lam, Calvin on 2019/06/14 12:10

Sometimes it’s great
by chpipes on 2019/06/14 07:38
Sometimes it’s great. I cast awesome docs and films to my TV. Sometimes it stutters and backtracks/skips so bad it’s unwatchable. Even after resetting the app and my TV. fresh boot of everything and right back to it. This has been happening on and off for quite some time
Super Content, Awful App and Setup/Activation Process
by Plips71755 on 2019/06/09 05:58
There is never anything bad to say about PBS - and Passport content is super for those who have been contributing members for decades in that we don’t have to purchase shows and series to watch after they are no longer active and to be able to watch even current shows at our leisure. However, this app is just awful. I had watched PBS for a long time via my iPad via airplay/Apple TV so I could watch on my big screen. It had worked quite well. And my other option because I had Amazon Prime and many of the shows and some of the series were offered through as a free benefit of Prime. And I could watch the same way, pull up Amazon, put shows in my watchlist (as they were available) and utilize iPad airplay and Apple TV to the big screen. But then, I assume due to both Britbox and Passport, many of the once available shows were no longer available on Prime. The big Masterpiece dramas were always hit and miss and just on for select periods but that was okay. And there are still some but most is gone or you have to rent or buy. It wasn’t until lately, that I finally made the effort to figure out why I wasn’t able to get my Passport activation sorted out. Really the whole activation of all devices is very cumbersome, i.e. you have to activate all the AppleTV, iPad, iPhone, laptop, and desktop devices you might use for it to work. Really a little crazy for modern technology. All other services I use or have used - you have one internet site to log into and from there you can watch on whatever..no activating each device or keeping them updated etc. But PBS, I feel got very bad advice - their program should have worked the same way..go to the PBS Passport website, sign in and and done - no activation of each device involved. So that was a hump but then when I got set up, I find when using Apple devices..there isn’t the usual airplay ability. I tried every way to Sunday and finally had to call Passport support - they see the issue but it hasn’t been fixed and don’t know when for sure. In the meantime we are forced to use this app which is super finicky and again cumbersome. I say you are forced - you can watch on the phone, iPad etc but not to your big screen tv. With the app - it is not easy to start and stop where you want, finding the episodes isn’t easy, it wants to start over at the very beginning, apparently they have gotten rid of the “skip intro” or “skip advertising” feature because they want you to watch the ad which can get to be very annoying every time you go in and out. For gosh sakes, we are already contributing members to get Passport, do we really need to see an ad enticing us to watch PBS. I mean that is why we are already watching PBS and using Passport...we are already quite familiar. Maybe ads for new shows so we can watch another cruise ad for the millionth time but for “reruns” - NO. And in today’s world, you should be able to skip. Quite honestly, I love PBS and have for 40-45 years but by the time I see these commercials that I can’t skip out of like the cruise ones - I feel like if I decided to take a cruise, it wouldn’t be on that line because I’m so tired of it. One of the nice features of PBS, ..was the fact that there weren’t ads just a notation of a sponsors name in the credits or a spoken “bought to you by such and such” but it has expanded beyond that. In fact, in the past I thought how nice it was that these folks and companies supported (in a pretty big way) without having to really get something back other than their name mentioned. And on shows + series - that we may have watched many times...like the everyday type shows, along with the Masterpiece and other productions - I don’t want to have to go through the show intro, nor the PBS promotional plus sponsorship “ads” hundreds of times. Most likely thousands of times when you consider each time you go in and out (stop/start) for EVERY show. Add these issues of no skip to not being able to fast forward/ reverse or stop and stop where you want and you are furious and not very relaxed. I hope they will soon do away with all this nonsense of multiple activations, and either get rid of the app necessity or fix the airplay feature so we can watch from the PBS website. Right now, you can watch to your device (phone, iPad etc) but if you try airplay through the control center.. you get the sound on your big screen tv (via Apple TV) but the picture plays on the device (iPad, etc)...you can’t get them together. And I love my Apple TV but it isn’t much fun dealing with the remote nor the hunt and peck to find shows, etc. it really isn’t designed to use that way..the tiny appletv remote is for getting setup etc but your real everyday “remote” is your Apple device (for most people their iPad or phone). My iPad is how I direct everything from music, YouTube, streaming services, home pictures and videos, everything to go to my big screen tv (via the Apple TV device). It usually works so easy and with no hitches...except with PBS. Please fix these issues. Quite honestly, it is a good thing I already love PBS and have been donating for years without any free benefits...if I had joined just to get Passport and had encountered this mess...I might quit. Don’t get me wrong, I think PBS is the best TV network out there - it is entertaining and educational. I wish even more people watched it and exposed their children to it AND supported it with monthly donations plus included PBS in their estate plans. But the way Passport is set up....if that was the my only reason to join/donate...it most likely wouldn’t happen because it is too frustrating.
Doesn’t work on apple. PBS discriminates doesn’t allow poor people to use passport
by Dale Rodgers on 2019/06/02 14:07
PBS doesn’t support apple. Those who use android don’t have problems cause software is for android and doesn’t adapt to iOS PBS has known the problems with commercials have been there from the beginning and have done nothing to fix it. As the problems still exist. Stirring to your Congress people And those that decide where tax payers money goes. And write to WGBH in Boston they developed this software.

by WKJonesy on 2019/05/29 08:05
My overall user experience was awesome. Very easy sign in, at least as a Passport member. Efficient access to content - quality search engine results. My only suggestion to the PBS site design team is to provide a simple option for a user, once they are in the app, to provide feedback. Based on my experience, the vast majority would be positive. Keep up the good work! :)
Missing shows and episodes
by crackberry on 2019/05/27 22:38
Why are some shows missing whole seasons and episodes? I’m a passport member, but Sherlock isn’t available. This is one of the reasons why I started donating.

Difficult to navigate
by Learning Apple on 2019/05/24 17:02
I thought if I made a monthly donation my options in viewing would be better. It turns out we watch a lot of the Explorer Channel. I still can’t figure out how to watch that, or even find it for that matter... I can see a commercial for our current favorite show 800 Words but, no series. I did find old episodes on another carrier but, not season 3. Very frustrating as we recently cut the cord. What the heck PBS? Make it better.
No show descriptions. Still.
by kvdoell on 2019/05/22 02:46

Stops playing when connected to external TV
by idavidi on 2019/05/19 03:13
If you use a mirroring cable, when the phone goes to sleep every few minutes, the video stops playing. The phone needs to be unlocked every few minutes. I think the devs need to make it so it either plays when the phone is asleep or have it not sleep. Otherwise this is an excellent app.
In-App Purchasing Label
by aksarge75 on 2019/05/17 23:36
Although this free app from PBS has content that requires you to “donate” to your local PBS station in order to receive it, that is still technically a purchase on the end of the customer — we are still required to spend money to get your product. Therefore you need to label this app as having “In-App Purchases” under the main icon here in the App Store just as any/all of the other apps do...

Almost five stars - get rid of the swipe bar on OS X phones.
by Binaryspiral on 2019/05/07 12:37
This is pretty much the best way to stream PBS content except the fact that the swipe bar remains visible during the entire show on iOS devices that don’t have home buttons.
Do better, PBS
by coffinwheezin on 2019/05/05 20:13
The app needs work. On Apple TV, it hangs. Appears to be a buffering issue, but may be glitching as it switches content in the background. Content, if you can get to it, is great. However, some content available by $$ subscription only. Not-so-public.
Seems ok now
by BuffaloNic on 2019/05/03 19:32
I read the negative reviews and tried a show, stopped it a couple of times, went back, and it restarted at the place it had left off. So, it seems to be working better. Still, there are bugs that need to be resolved. For example, the visual tracking seems off, out of sync.
Paid app disguised as free
by KoowanPStark on 2019/05/01 03:02
Almost everything on this app requires you to be a paying member, but you only find out after endless clicks to reach the content. Oops, sorry, have to be a paid member for that content. And that content. And that content. Nope, sorry, that isn’t free either. Last time I checked PBS didn’t charge to watch their shows. They do now. You’ve been warned. Deleted.
No video.

Good app when it works
by grandmadebi3 on 2019/04/28 00:34
This is a good app when it’s working. It is less flexible than I would like. If I forget to turn the brightness up before I start a video, then do so, I am booted out of the video and made to watch an ad before I can get back in. Why am I watching ads when I am a paid member of PBS? Now this evening, after repeated efforts, the only thing it will show me is ads. An ad plays, then stops with the last frame of the ad filling my screen. Any effort I make to move on from there results in more ads, which always stall at the end.

Infuriating
by salvaier on 2019/04/19 22:15
I’m a loyal follower of pbs and a donor. Love the shows, but using this app is soooo frustrating! Every time I get out of the app in the middle of a show, I’m not allowed to simply resume, but forced to restart and fast forward to the point where I left, blindly, without being able to scrub through images, and every time having to watch the initial ad! Forget about picking up from another device. Navigation through seasons and episodes is completely counterintuitive (and difficult). I watch pbs on my iPhone, Apple TV and other streaming devices... just as bad! So, us pbs lovers seem to be stuck with a bad app, hoping that developers read these reviews and decide to do something about it!
Great. Exactly what I wanted.
by True Blue 447 on 2019/04/18 17:40

My 83 year old mother is considering getting rid of cable, but with this kind of glitch that becomes technically challenging for her.

Needs much improvement!
by TasaPNW on 2019/04/09 23:19
While I appreciate the idea behind Passport, the app makes it challenging to actually use. I switch between watching on my iPad and Apple TV. Regrettably, there is no tracking between the two interfaces of what has been watched! Also, this app is altogether poorly organized. Surely all the money viewers like me and the big corporations, for whom we are forced to watch ads, can hire better programmers for the PBS app!!
Great content, dismal streaming
by Spsulli on 2018/08/29 00:00
It’s PBS, it’s an American classic. Unfortunately if you want to stream it this app is infuriating. The chromecast support is terrible, it fails to cast 50% of the time, never remembers where you left off and god forbid you want to rewind EVER. Once streaming you have no control over the video as it always reads as 00:00. The most insulting part is that even when you donate to PBS as a passport member you are still forced to watch an ad every time you stream. (The most insulting part being that the ad ALWAYS loads even when the episode fails. So you watch a whole ad just for it to finish and just stream the PBS logo.) Best solution I have found so far is disconnecting from chromecast go to the episode and spot you want on your phone, then reconnect, still only works about 70% of the time but still better.

Believe the other critical reviews
by MrM3000 on 2018/06/15 03:55
The content? What can be said... It is possibly the last place in America to get quality content that’s far more substance than flash. But unfortunately the best content can’t save this app from it’s sorry and poor quality problem. As others have mentioned, it suffers from amateurish problems like a never ending spinning icon in the middle of the screen that won’t go away if you dare fast forward or rewind. It won’t remember your last position if you have to stop the video to resume later. The clock, wifi, and other status indicators at the top of the screen remain visible in full screen. On the positive side, a weird bug with Chromecast has been fixed and the app is a bit more polished. I hope they continue with more improvements in future versions to enjoy the top notch content better.
I love PBS
by bgaffe on 2019/07/12 00:59
PBS is my favorite channel.
It would be great if that even worked across devices but I would settle for it working on even one device.
iOS 13 Stops Window from Minimizing While Viewing

Would like to again enjoy other apps on iPad Pro while watching PBS videos as before. Since September 2019 update for iPads this isn’t working. I’ve deleted and reinstalled the app and it’s still not working properly! And why does this app not pick up where I left off in a video, like Netflix for example. I go from device to device while traveling, so this would be VERY CONVENIENT and less time consuming. Thank you for such great entertainment, worth the $5 per month donations.
Great content, inferior app
by Turtlebutt2 on 2018/10/25 06:29
This app is good when it works, though I agree with another reviewer that it should allow you to pick up where you left off in a show instead of restarting. My biggest complaint is that it crashes constantly...or just doesn’t play the show I select. I get a black screen and have to restart several times. Going through a browser is a more reliable way to get content but defeats the purpose of the app. You can do better PBS!

Ugh those commercials
by Lovebirdphoto on 2018/10/12 01:52
I understand the need for marketing and the need for sponsors. But the commercials won’t play through. They are 23 second commercials played before each episode that skip, pause, jump, and cause shows/app on both TV and devices to shut down. Whhhhhy?!? Fix the commercial problem-I don’t mind seeing them. Just fix them!. Also, I can’t see the new episodes on my iPhone. I have downloaded the new version, too.
Not a fan.

What do the developers of this app tell themselves?
by Laurami on 2019/03/17 03:17
This app is simply inept. It lacks basic video playback features like remembering where you stopped watching an episode and which ones you’ve already seen. Paid members should not be forced to watch an ad. Other users have recorded a host of other problems. How hard can it be to make a streaming video app that works properly? Much less established companies have managed to do so. Functional video streaming apps are not rare.
Absolutely Frustrating App 👎🏼
by CGE68 on 2019/02/11 19:47
The PBS app is extremely frustrating. I try NOT to use the app. I guess if you’re not a paid PBS donor, (which I would happily be if I could afford it) the app automatically will give you the most difficult & frustrating experience. PBS needs to fix this! I don’t mind promoting what’s on PBS but I always warn people, don’t waste your time downloading the app. I would also like to point out that this isn’t something I just discovered in the last couple of months. This is been ongoing for the last couple years.

Doesn’t track episodes I have watched. The 10 second rewind button will just take you back to the beginning of the episode. Also a lot of episodes are not available even with the paid account, things like American Experience and American Masters only offers so many seasons.
Where did it Go?
by JJDUNBERG on 2018/10/15 04:47
The program selection can be a challenge when you’ve been away for a time — you can’t see what you were just watching without going through your list. Again. Which continues to ask for you to sign into Passport, more than once. The search function is nonexistent, and — to repeat prior criticism — even when you find what you’re looking for, you have to watch the advertisements before moving through the program manually. Analog thinking in a digital age?
Needs much improvement!
by TasaPNW on 2019/04/09 23:19
While I appreciate the idea behind Passport, the app makes it challenging to actually use. I switch between watching on my iPad and Apple TV. Regrettably, there is no tracking between the two interfaces of what has been watched! Also, this app is altogether poorly organized. Surely all the money viewers like me and the big corporations, for whom we are forced to watch ads, can hire better programmers for the PBS app!!
A memory hog
by RJB-NE on 2018/08/01 19:44
I don't usually watch programs on my iPad, preferring using my roku on the tv, but this app is using 2.5 gig of my limited memory. I can't find any way to reset it short of deleting and reinstalling. I would like to see a listing of new programs and those soon to expire. While not the most user friendly, it does work.
Filled with ads and spoilers.
by Myske on 2019/03/08 18:26
This is essentially a paid service thanks to needing to be a PBS member to get access to the content, yet you need to sit through a 30 second commercial that you can’t skip before every episode. Then, once the episode starts (at least for Victoria), there’s another 30 seconds of previews showing scenes from the episode that you’re about to watch. This is essentially 30 seconds of spoilers right before the content. Why? What genius thought that you need previews to entice people to watch something that they’re already watching? These spoilers serve no purpose other than to ruin the episode that follows. I will be cancelling my membership until such time as the ads ad spoilers disappear. How hard is it to just provide the content without extra bothersome crap?
Basic functionality missing
by Dancinglily101 on 2018/10/31 00:15
Amazing content & love all PBS programming. There is one basic function that any streaming app should have: the ability to stop or pause knowing the app will keep your place. If you stop or pause, you have to endure the laborious task or re-starting the entire show and then manually figure out where you left off. It’s pretty maddening... almost like reading a book and not marking the page.
Good content, poor app
by Phillip's Comment on 2018/11/04 12:49
This app was written by and for the geeks who wrote it. The password requirements are far too complicated for a non financial site. There is no touch screen logon. The videos have limited flexibility and don’t support basic video capabilities. It looks like they spent all their time impressing each other with ways to limit passwords and had no time left to provide support to the people actually using the app.
Works occasionally
by Sahlore on 2018/07/06 19:04
Good content, weak app. Difficult to log on, especially if you have ever had more than one PBS account. Screens for log on aren’t user friendly. Shows load slowly or not at all, leaving you with the dreaded white spinner at center screen. It spins, then dies to a black crash. Occasionally it works, and that’s nice.
Excellent shows, terrible streaming
by teagurl on 2019/02/28 16:52
All the shows you want to watch are available. If you want to stream it, particularly via Chromecast to your TV, it’s completely hit or miss if the casting will last a full episode. Almost every time, it will cut out and either crash the app or restart the show; sometimes several times within the duration of a single episode. And don’t ever try to do anything else with your phone while it’s casting or it will definitely fail.
Sad waste of public funding
by P-tee on 2018/11/13 06:05
Considering PBS is called “public” I find this app horrible in 2 ways. 1. I can’t get videos to play waiting because I have to wait for ridiculous commercials to load before each episode. Sometimes I have to try 4-5 times waiting up to 5 minutes each time to see if the commercial will load so that I can watch the video. The commercial never starts so I restart the app and try again. 2. This play pass stuff is garbage! PBS benefits from public funding from the federal gov. Access should belong to the people since we are forced to pay for it. Yet 90% of the videos require a subscription which costs $$. Ridiculous. The big networks leave content more available than public broadcasting. I’d give 0 stars if I could.
Subtitles out of phase
by Susannah Smith on 2018/10/18 05:55
Subtitles are a full screen behind audio. How does that happen? Also, the subtitles randomly appear sometimes even when you don’t have that feature on. Also, there’s a 10-second rewind button but no corresponding fast forward button. Also, there’s no auto play to the next episode of a tv series. Also, there’s no link to a series’ homepage from an episode’s page. All in all, great video content that is woefully underserved by the technical platform of the app. The app is actually painful enough to engage with that it makes me weigh that in the decision of whether to watch a PBS show here or something else on Netflix or Prime. Come on, PBS, you can do better—please do!
Works OK on iPhone but doesn’t cast well
by Big Papa Pat on 2018/08/23 00:55
It works fine on my phone, but when you hit the cast button it plays a commercial then stops. If you do it enough it will play after watching 20 or so commercials. After you finally get it to play, it’s best not to try pausing it unless you really like the commercial you’ll watch 20 times again trying to get it to start again.
Very poor streaming
by Llandrynh on 2019/04/07 01:41
I love PBS content and was excited about getting this app and the subscription. But the streaming quality is terrible. It repeats, then skips, then repeats constantly throughout every program we’ve tried to watch. It also suddenly stops streaming altogether and it takes several minutes to get back on track. It’s 2019 — stream like the big boys or don’t stream at all.
Issues fixed. Thank you
by online viewer on 2018/06/15 12:16
Before the recent updated, the play/pause button was had to use. I think this has been fixed. Thanks again
They take your money and provide no service
by Mike Benton on 2019/01/06 16:55
I signed up for passport membership and every video I try to watch tells me I must have a passport membership. So you take my money, and then provide no service. No help found. No number to call. I have signed out and back in 15 times hoping it would start working. No I have to figure out how to get my passport membership refunded. As if I had nothing better to do on a Sunday afternoon....
Poor Apple TV App
by Neat Machine on 2018/09/22 15:21
I’ve been waiting for an excuse to donate to PBS and thought I’d found it when I saw all of the great content available in this app. Unfortunately, it’s the only app on the Apple TV that appears to have critical issues with TV App integration. Many videos don’t show up in search, and nothing I play on the Apple TV shows up in Up Next in the TV App (oddly, this works on the phone). Pretty disappointing.
Needs improvement. Specially for Passport contents.
by boringplanet10 on 2018/07/28 22:19
(Apple TV app) Just recently subscribed for the monthly donation, to unlock Passport contents. Lots of good shows, but when I need to stop the movie to continue another time. It does not save where you left off last. Going to give it another month, to see if there are any improvements. Otherwise I'm going to cancel it.
Awesome
by Mom/Gram on 2019/02/21 03:36
From the very beginning, PBS has broadened my ability to learn about people, places and things that I’d not be able to from the confine of my home. From early morning til late at night, at no cost PBS is available. Marilyn
Pleasantly surprised
by Champ123! on 2018/11/10 22:15
After reading many of the reviews i was hesitant to use this app with my 3 year old iPad, but i have to say i was pleasantly surprised. I have only watched a couple of my favorites, but am 100% satisfied at this point. Try it, if you are like me you’ll like it!

Despite reading all the negative reviews I gave this app a shot because I love PBS documentaries. Did not encounter any issues the previous reviewers mentioned - they must have fixed it during recent updates. I highly recommend this app to anyone. If it makes a difference, I use an iPhone 8 on t-mobile network. Enjoy!
New App not work on ipad2?

Not a fan.

Thanks

Great content, app needs improvement
by ejmartin on 2019/10/11 13:51

by brandijean925 on 2019/10/10 01:50

Awful app!
by Fiddler109872345 on 2019/09/30 02:26
The functionality of this app is a constant nightmare.

Crashes and burns
by Rwattersjr on 2019/06/18 00:07

Show episodes mislinked
by astrosco on 2019/06/17 03:55
We’ve been using the app for about a year now and it has been getting better. However the people running the app architecture to the video database continue to make some pretty basic errors. Season 6 of Endeavour started tonight and with much anticipation we went to watch episode one and after about 5 minutes it became apparent that the episode the app had fed us was NOT episode 1 “Pylon” but instead episode 2 “Apollo”. A simple misconnected link that has ruined our evening. Come on PBS - attention to detail guys. Take some care and professionalism in your work!

by chpipes on 2019/06/14 07:38
Sometimes it’s great.

Make it easier to give a review
by WKJonesy on 2019/05/29 08:05
My overall user experience was awesome.

Difficult to navigate
by Learning Apple on 2019/05/24 17:02
I thought if I made a monthly donation my options in viewing would be better. It turns out we watch a lot of the Explorer Channel. I still can’t figure out how to watch that, or even find it for that matter... I can see a commercial for our current favorite show 800 Words but, no series. I did find old episodes on another carrier but, not season 3. Very frustrating as we recently cut the cord. What the heck PBS? Make it better.

Deleted.

I also have been having similar issues with the it crashing when I am streaming to chromecast, that other reviewers are experiencing. My 83 year old mother is considering getting rid of cable, but with this kind of glitch that becomes technically challenging for her.
Very frustrating app

Needs much improvement!
by TasaPNW on 2019/04/09 23:19
While I appreciate the idea behind Passport, the app makes it challenging to actually use. I switch between watching on my iPad and Apple TV. Regrettably, there is no tracking between the two interfaces of what has been watched! Also, this app is altogether poorly organized. Surely all the money viewers like me and the big corporations, for whom we are forced to watch ads, can hire better programmers for the PBS app!!
It would be great if that even worked across devices but I would settle for it working on even one device.
iOS 13 Stops Window from Minimizing While Viewing
by OneBuddah on 2019/10/02 00:16
Would like to again enjoy other apps on iPad Pro while watching PBS videos as before.
I’d recommend finding some alternative way to watch your favorite shows until they can fix this😡
Make it easier to give a review
by WKJonesy on 2019/05/29 08:05
My overall user experience was awesome. Very easy sign in, at least as a Passport member. Efficient access to content - quality search engine results. My only suggestion to the PBS site design team is to provide a simple option for a user, once they are in the app, to provide feedback. Based on my experience, the vast majority would be positive. Keep up the good work! :)
Not a fan.
Such a run around.

by Photo022 on 2018/12/30 16:17
Doesn’t track episodes I have watched.

Oversees support?
by nams291 on 2019/11/10 18:04
Watching PBS with my family was a highlight of my childhood. I was therefore very excited to discover the PBS app, especially given that I now live oversees, and any link back home is something special. Too bad things aren’t that easy....the message “This video is not available in your region” pops up whenever I try to watch something. Any chance that might change in the future?
Marilyn
