Doesn’t save more than one song
by the real Twan on 2020/01/05 11:05
I have been using Chordbot Lite for a few months and I decided that is it time to pay for the full version. Mainly I got to the point where I needed to save more than one song that the Lite version provided. I gave this app a low rating because no matter how closely I follow the user manual, I can never save more than one tune at a time. That was the whole point of paying $4.99 for full service. Big disappointment for me. I could have saved the 5 dollars and just kept using the free Lite version. The app developer could do much better. And should, if they are going to charge for services promised but not delivered. Otherwise, it’s a great app. I’d be happy to rate it 5 stars if they make the necessary corrections. Thank you.
Great App!
by BAL60 on 2019/11/25 15:46
This App is a great for creating backgrounds parts for playing along with on your guitar or other instruments, and singing. When is a new version coming out?
WAS amazing ಠ╭╮ಠ

Chordbot has started crashing just as I'm finishing up what took hours of precious time. I'm so discouraged. Emailed dev via email address provided here a couple days ago. No response as of yet. I have to step away from it right now..
Bleikr Sound Approved App

Intuitive interface, encourages experimental compositions. A basic knowledge of music theory is helpful, but not needed.
More styles, genres, sounds, and patterns
by truenels on 2019/06/02 03:47
Would like to see some expansion packs would pay for them Cinematic styles 80s styles EDM styles Thanks
I would give it six stars if I could
by Dorian137 on 2019/03/12 18:06
I love this app. I am a musician and it gives me a portable way to quickly audition chord progressions and substitutions in a detailed but mostly intuitive UI. It pushed me to try more exotic chords that would otherwise be too complex for me with a paint or guitar. For non-musicians, I can see this as a great app to feel their way through some music without having to know how to work it out on a piano. It’s also a quick way to lay down a simple backing track to play an instrument on top of.
For Composers
by Untwss on 2019/02/20 11:35
Chordbot provides you the ability to compose and produce professionally-sounding music on your phone. Though it does not have step sequencing for individual notes, it is incredibly complex. You will hear Chordbot on the radio soon.
Very, very, very useful. UPDATE
by KD Jones on 2018/10/15 22:10
6 years after the below was written, it's still a gem. Plus useful to demonstrate chord changes & structure to others. Continued thanks. Many of them. -------- I've had this app for a long time now, and it's just huge. All the obvious great factors - being able to quickly experiment with progression, ability to use complex chords, tweaking the bass w/ slash chords, midi export and audio copy to use and elaborate structure elsewhere... As for the negative reviews, yeah, more styles would be nice, and if you don't write in anything related to the included styles (or have no imagination), or if you don't write/experiment chordally (or have no imagination) then you'll have issues. This is NOT a magic ba song creator app, nor is it BIAB. It IS an exvellent mobile sketchpad for development of song structure. AND bear in mind the voicings for a chord within a style vary based on what precedes them, in terms of both chord value and slash/root. As a result the resultant implied melody in the upper registers can be tweaked in various ways. It's also often useful to split sections of a given chord (say, a 4/4 Cmaj to two 2/4 Cmaj with different slash values, or a closely related chord). Not a BIAB level of control, but how much did you pay for BIAB + kit, and is it in your pocket? And, it's useful for just getting a feel for progression and variation, an educational factor that can be viewed as a bonus or as the core feature. ---- I WOULD REALLY like to see a couple even simpler styles emphasising the progressions alone, with/without percussion/arpeggiation/bass (or only bass). That would be lovely for practice and broader prograssion work. --------- But (have to say it, though it takes the emphasis off what I'd like to see added) a very solid 5 as is. - KD Jones
Great sketch pad
by StayFlyEatFries on 2018/08/07 03:54
This app is super useful for sketching out chord progressions, or fleshing ideas out into longer songs. It has been very useful to me for many years now. Only thing that it needs is iPhone X support!
Best songwriting tool ever!
by markoscott on 2018/07/25 16:52
Seriously, this is awesome. The only thing that would make it better, and this doesn’t subtract any stars, is if there was a keyboard representation of the notes in the chords so you could more easily visualize how the non-root notes of the chords are progressing. Of course you can transfer it to a DAW for this, but it would be nice for the writing process.
Great Tool, but can be Buggy!
by Rabbi Neb on 2018/06/26 03:18
I bought this app last week. I like it a lot. Lots of chords to experiment with, and that's great, but I have one problem. When adding another chord to the song structure, it changes other chords along with it! That's a bummer. This happens almost every time. I have had to save after every chord addition. Why is it doing this? Please fix it and five stars for sure. This also has some nice sounds without having to go Midi and that's a plus too! Oh and a way to quickly undo would also be a plus. Thanks for your quick attention. Nebben
AMAZING.
by zyyxxxwwwwvvvvv0 on 2018/04/02 14:38
1) This app is wonderful. And the paid version is well worth the money - go for it! 2) My life will not be complete until this is available on PCs and as a VST plugin
Needs some more harmonic systems to work with.
by Baerz on 2017/10/03 01:39
Some augments chords and some minMaj7 chords, just for examples, should really be included to make use of harmonic minor and melodic minor systems. Also, no b9s or b13s, etc.? I get that they are trying to keep it clean, but there are ways to keep it simple while still allowing important harmonies in contemporary harmony (and classical, for that matter). I have a feeling people that want to use this are trying to expand their palette, rather than practice the same old same old.
Great App!
by Mr. B56 on 2017/09/02 15:06
I've used this app off and on for a few years now. Its truly a great one. Perfect for working out the basic song chord progressions which you can later flesh out in more detail, what ever your method is.
Great App!!!!

I really like this app, it lets you do a lot o variations to a song thanks!
👍🏻
by synthmig on 2017/06/25 11:58
Really a great app! I use it often as a sketchpad for song development then I export to a midi file for further development on computer.
Not user friendly
by Victormd1 on 2017/06/23 15:22
The same way it has the copy and paste function of "copy from this chord", "copy to this chord", and "paste after this chord", it also needs a "mark from this chord", "mark to this chord", and "DELETE" function to delete entire group of chords not needed. When I attempt to remove s chord and touch that particular function key, it rotates very fast to some unmarked chord, causing to lose my position on the song. You need to fix that glitch and make it stay on the same position after deleting. Why don't you show the empty space with the tag "Deleted" as a Position Mark; give the user the option of touching on "Delete" a second time to delete the "Deleted" space alto grado ether if desired. No keeping with some kind of marks causes the losing the positioning on the song, and the light blue color markings are disappearing after a function...this ca uses further losing song positioning.
New version - best ever!
by Yornzepwor on 2017/04/17 05:34
Chordbot has finally got the formula exactly right. With all of your chord elements available on one screen along with your progression, this is the most intuitive and user friendly chord progression app I've seen yet.
Awesome Update!

Incredible update
by Aman Bansil on 2017/03/14 05:35
Wow this developer just made this 1000x better. I liked the app before. However it involved too much flipping though menus. But now, this new interface has made things so much easier. In the iPad, it's really really good. 5/5 for sure. Amazing design upgrade. Good job dev!
Issues with iPad Pro 12" until restart, otherwise fantastic!
by GuitaristFret on 2017/03/13 06:07
The screen is not resizing properly (too zoomed in) when first installing on an iPad Pro and there is no access to anything, so I restarted the iPad Pro 12" and it's working. I love the new updated interface and the program is really brilliant for the money. Highly recommended.

Chord to changed my life!
by Wjgd1 on 2016/09/18 01:39
As a solo singer songwriter who lives in a rural community with a busy life that doesn't allow me to jam much with other musicians, this app has changed my life.
Excellent Compositional Aid! WOW!
by elipsis1 on 2016/08/30 02:37
I am so happy I bought this app. The sounds and arpeggios are great, not to mention the wealth of chord types. Only thing that could make this better would be to search for chord substitutions by melody notes or the ability to specify chords that share a common note. Still, though, this gets a 5/5 easy! Buy it!
Arrangement Bliss
by 5till12 on 2016/01/20 07:03
Dude, you can Angel two acoustic guitars on separate tracks and mix all these picking patterns...then you got so many interval and inversion choices that it sounds better than what a straight 12 string would do...ingenious! You may even use these instruments in your production. Trust me, if you're a song writer and don't have this app, it's the next one to blow you away!
Best app I've ever purchased
by Brown391 on 2015/09/15 00:02
This app is an amazing tool for creativity. As a musician I have dropped a decent amount of money on related apps but this has been my number 1 Pros: 1. Versatile: the chord selection is awesome (major, minor, 7th, aug, sus, dim, +many more) 2. You can export files 3. Random chord generator for those moments of "writers block" Cons: 1. Needs an "undo" button" (very easy to accidentally edit all sections of your song when you meant to only edit 1) 2. Guitar sounds are a bit weak, I never use them, but there are plenty of other sounds o work with so no biggie. Despite those I still rate this app 5 stars, this has been a big tool for inspiration. Tip: save often! Save often! Save often! And wouldn't hurt to save 2 files of the same song.
Great Songwriter Companion
by Mikes jello on 2015/08/21 01:36
Great app to work out chord progressions and changes. Fantastic for writing songs on the work commute and lunch breaks. Keep this little jewel alive, please. First music app I ever bought and still one of my main 'go to apps.'

Crashes on iOS 8.3
by Ezxcxz on 2015/04/12 05:22
I just bought it and it always crashes. It doesn't work at all on my iPhone iOS 8.3. I don't even have any chance to check this app out. I thought it's very helpful 'cause I saw some instructional videos on YouTube.
Love The Concept
by Gstaff100 on 2015/03/23 22:14
The power of lazy creativity in this app is mind blowing, but to catch up with the times direct MIDI out, not just export, should be an added feature for this program. Will give it seven stars then.

Best, easiest, and fastest way to make backing tracks
by Johnnygroove on 2015/01/16 18:41
I needed an easy way to make modal backing tracks in all keys because it would have taken forever to make them myself. This app has many options and sounds good. You also have the ability to have a bass note of your choosing under the chord which is essential when creating modal jam tracks. I'm very please to have found this app.
Best iOS songwriter's scratchpad
by TheDecoyDog on 2015/01/04 20:02
Very easy to throw together scratch arrangements of songs in many styles. Great tool for saving my ideas, but the Random song generator also help me generate new ideas what I'm stuck. This won't be your recording platform, but it's a great way to play with ideas.

helpful app
by jennacide on 2014/12/01 23:55
I find this to be an essential app, but I had an earlier version and I liked that one much better. I wish the comping styles were broken down into sections and guitar/piano, to make it easier to find the right style. Anyway I don't know of any other app that does what this app does, but I still wish it cost less.
Great app
by Nevlim on 2014/11/21 15:45
I use it everyday for putting together backing tracks for my solo act. Has all the chords I use for jazz and blues backing. Great for exchange of ideas with my band too. I'm able to put together grooves in less than 15 minutes. Great app. Look forward to improvements like addition of eighth notes.
Disappointing
by Focusking on 2014/10/17 04:11
Very disappointing upgrade. I had hoped for something more, considering that other apps of this type are doing much, much more.
Brilliant
by cube-b on 2014/10/06 16:23
This is an amazing app. You can select chords from a large range of chord types (some pretty exotic (Min7(#11) or 6/9 anybody?), voicings (inversions, slash chords), time values; set tempo; arrange them into sections and sections into complete songs; hear them with various instrument combinations and styles; transpose; export as audio or MIDI; and other things. I bought this as a way to play around with chords, but now I actually rough out songs on it, import the MIDI files into Logic, and build whole recordings around it. It’s really an amazing Swiss amy knife of song creation. Couldn’t recommend it more highly.
Excellent and Very Useful
by Jarsby on 2014/09/30 12:22
This is one of those apps you realize you’ll want to keep using from the moment you open it. Uncluttered and not overloaded with features that get in the way of building a chord progression. It’s an excellent song-writing idea-tester and practice tool. The sections area lets you arrange your song with various iterations of verse, chorus, bridge, etc. The sounds are good enough for practice.

Chordbot is an excellent chord sequencing app. Sounds that are built in are of top quality. It would be neat to be able to export as a mp4 or Mov file. I write my own songs and would like to be able to add lyrics to my works. This would be done by editing in a video editing program like Finl Cut Pro.
Doesn't work on iPad
by funkinbassman on 2014/03/14 11:45
This app hasn't worked on the iPad (I'm using 3rd gen) since the update at the beginning of last November! It's now mid March and it's still not fixed?!! I want my 5 bucks back!
Fantastic app
by CraigHubbs on 2014/02/04 17:52
This app allows you to quickly create chord progressions as well as compose great sounding songs. It has some minor bugs such as resetting some of the previously entered chords while making edits to a track. The interface provides quick navigation to all the features, but you need to read the documentation to understand all the sections that the program offers. The ability to export both a MIDI file as well as a WAV file is very nice. I would easily pay 5 times the cost of this program.
No portrait mode!!
by Xextriz on 2013/12/21 15:48
I loved this application and used to use it in portrait mode (The lite version) For whatever reason, they changed to only landscape. I will give it 5 stars if they enable portrait mode again.
Prone to crash

Adore this app
by bravocharlietango on 2013/12/07 02:23
I am so blown away by this app -- the musicality built into this program. It is sooo useful to the songwriter. And the variety of comping styles is amazing. An incredible amount of homework was done for sure! One ask: ability to drag chords around to easily change the progression.
Awesome! But doesn't work!
by anonymouslix on 2013/11/21 01:13
Giving it 2 stars for now until they fix the bug! Doesn't play sound!!! Just paid five bucks help!
Best Money Ever Spent Towards My Music Career!
by jbogo on 2013/11/17 20:25
Okay, I don't usually review anything but as I have been using your tool to sketch songs over the last few weeks I have been thinking man, I love this so darn much I simply must go tell this guy thank you and offer him some good feedback. Just now I noticed that your app is in reviewed. Please let me be the first to offer you my sincere apologies from everyone who hasn't seen this app yet, this is a huge sin simply not being featured by Apple, I can only guess they are embarrassed that Logic (I own this and a million other apps too) doesn't have anything at all capable of electronically sketching ideas and as you say creating a music pallet to write with. I would write on forever but iOS 7 has a review window that doesn't let you type much more, it is below the keyboard, how Apple missed this is beyond me but I promise you if you write songs you will love this app and you will use it often. Please add audio us, I will pay for a version 2 if you do.
Great and easy to use
by dumbz on 2013/11/17 14:32
This is a fantastic app if you are looking to practice soloing over chord changes. You just program the chords in whatever configuration you'd like and start playing... It's that simple. For jazz players, this is superb. It not only lets you use seventh chords in any key, but also provides extensions, all the inversions, and even some altered chords to challenge your playing. Moreover, you can choose from dozens of styles, from Latin to electronica... Just a great, useful tool.

Awesome
by Angela Westbrook on 2013/08/22 13:38
Hey guys, I was wondering if you guys could add maraca's, sandbox sounds like that that would go with the acoustic guitar. The drums are awesome electric guitar the acoustic guitar I don't know what legacy means if you would get back to me about that I would appreciate it there's nothing that comes up on my iPhone or iPad for that matter. The app is marvelous and has all the features that I like and a music production I can take it and save it and imported to my drum machine unfortunately the drum machine I have on my phone does not have maracas so you can see the difficulty there also if we had maracas on the on Chordbot I could add it and sequence it with the acoustic guitar. Thanks for a great app
Wonderful App
by PapaDukes53 on 2013/08/09 18:59
As a guitar player this is GREAT app for practice. Allows you to have your own backup band. I found it very intuitive and easy to use. I was able to put together my backing tracks quickly and easily. Love it! Well worth the money. Highly recommended.
Great just got greater
by Musiclover10101 on 2013/07/05 22:17
This app has really grown up since I installed it on iOS 4.2.1 and it was great then too. They've added features while maintaining simplicity. I can't wait til I can apply styles to individual chord patterns. Excellent. Buy it!
Great app, Great Support
by Murdock Scott on 2013/06/03 18:50
The app works very well and I really like it. I was having a problem and emailed the developer, within a few hours I had an answer from them, and it was really just as simple as clearing up some space on my iPad. (Admittedly, I should have thought of this myself). So if your play button is non functional, just erase some unused stuff from your device.

Really Good...
by Yale University DMCA on 2013/04/06 17:27
This is a really fast way to prototype a progression and hear it with a complete 'band', rather than a bunch of bleeps and bloops. It has an awesome "Export MIDI To.." function which lists all the apps on you pad that can import MIDI. In may case the output went straight to Cubasis …. each instrument on its own track…. then I could reassign sounds, edit the MIDI, add effects and do a fader based mix. WOW! I kind of assumed I would be able to drag/rearrange to chord blocks … but the dev has a feature request link on the web site. Also good. Get it.
No Sleep After Purchase
by jwsnell00 on 2013/03/31 13:54
Don't plan on getting much sleep after buying this. It's incredible. The more you use it, the more you will get in to it, although its great for a beginner. All that music that rolls around in your head you know you could create suddenly becomes a reality. Yes - Its that good.
technically flexible with few hiccups
by Jwazzzz on 2013/03/28 01:32
Chordbot offers excellent export options though the .midi file option does need more general midi export refinement so each track is exported and subsequently able to be imported cleanly. Also an undo button is needed as the interface does not allow for easy and accurate deletion of chords without frequently worrying about careful timing of delete button pressing. Aside from these simple improvements that can be addressed in update, chordbot unlocked offers compelling options to create interesting and dynamic chord and song creation. enhancements like additional chord suggestion options that harmonize well and naming or displaying notes in each chord along with chord name would help the package sell even better
Good but some weird hiccups
by Joeybmpls on 2013/03/23 07:02
I like the layout, like the ease of use. The multiple instruemnts help write chords, since writing for piano is different then guitar. I love the support and the cheap price. However, there are a few things missing that other apps do and some weird, albeit unneccesary hiccups. Not being the best on the spot music theorist, it would be nice to know chords are in and out of scope of whatever key id like to record in. Suggester tells me after a few chords which keys my chords would fit in, restricting me from being too outside the box progression wise. Also, I understand after talking to a very quick and responsive help support, big big plus, that I have 9 tracks to work with, being able to add many layers of instruments to write an entire ensemble, however, I am annoyed that when I export my midi track all 9 tracks, even if I didnt use them, export. I.e. I write a simple C maj to D Maj chord progression in a piano tone, I export it as a midi file, when I import that midi file in Ableton or Logic it adds 9 seperate tracks, in fact in logic it creates 8 extra virtual instruments shutting down my workflow, Ableton is easier to delete. But why? Why does it always have to import 9 midi tracks, 8 of which that are empty?
Outstanding!
by Hiblagrande on 2013/03/22 01:03
The new updates are simply amazing. I opened the program without knowing about all the new features, it was a great surprise. A virtual band in a box plain and simple. Thanks again.
Incredible

Chordbot has evolved into a top notch writing tool. Everything you need to capture your ideas are in this app.
This app is beautiful.
by James mac machine on 2013/02/13 02:53
The only reason I am giving it 4 stars is because of the the lack of undo button. A few times I've accidentally deleted a chord.

Well conceived, excellent value, works perfectly
by mr_donald on 2013/01/21 20:53
This app is precisely what I went looking for, only better. If you're a songwriter, it is perfect for sketching out & experimenting with chord progressions. I had tried other more fully-featured sequencing apps but they were all just too complicated & time-consuming for the kind of "sketching" I wanted to do. Chordbot nailed it in terms of intuitive interface, fast, smooth performance, more than enough stylistic options (in the paid version) to help you visualize the song you have in mind to create. Even the free Lite version is excellent and completely usable as-is. I was so grateful for having found it that I wanted to buy the full version in part just to thank and reward the developer. The additional functions in the paid version are well worth the price. Unlike some of the other reviews, I personally would not want to see more features crammed in. As-is, it works perfectly well as a songwriter's companion (or as a backup band for improvising over) and I'd hate to see it get bogged down and more complicated.
Headed the right way
by Myla412 on 2013/01/21 19:10
I remember downloading this app several months and then deleting. I saw some good reviews of the latest version. I picked it up again, and yep, it's headed in the perfect direction. 4 stars because there are some crashes and because there seems to be no effective auto-save I end up losing work. More patterns, comps for strings, some fill patterns for each comp, support for more rhythm patterns, more comps for non 4/4 times will make it even better. Whole heartedly recommend for any composer, arranger, performer figuring out chords for any number etc. Way to go mate!
It's About Time! Now Six Stars!

I've been waiting for an IPad version... it's finally here and it's unbeatable. It was worth the wait. It does a great job and is fairly intuitive as well. Update One day later... the more I use it, the more I like it. In some ways it's better than Band-In-A-Box, which has been around for decades. Best music app anywhere? Maybe.
Fantabulous
by ShivShivShiv on 2013/01/14 03:19
I love this -- have been waiting for this for years. I just got it today and have already written and saved 3 songs. It is very intuitive. This is just what I need for practice, and composition. If you can get sections to play on command like ableton live (waiting for the previous section to finish) in the section view, this would become the default application for performance.
If you write songs, you need this App
by B-Stevens on 2013/01/12 23:03
So glad to see this app in iOS. It is the perfect tool for working out chord structure for your melodies. I would venture to say there's nothing better or easier for the price on any operating system.
One of the most useful music apps

Wonderful update
by Streamfinder on 2013/01/10 21:55
Thank you for the thoughtful update. This app was serviceable at first, but now it is irreplaceable. The new features and workflow are very practical. I use this as a quick and dirty way to brainstorm a song before trying it live in GarageBand. I also use it to practice scales and melodic ideas over harmonies.
Awesome Update!
by 1dionysus on 2013/01/10 17:26
I'd call it quick and dirty, but it's quick, clean and mean! The workflow is easy and logical where most comparable apps are confusing and frustrating. Sure, MIDI out would be interesting bit it's not necessary if you have a DAW i.e. GarageBand, Logic, Ableton Live, etc. The export options are fantastic. You could spend a lot more for a less intuitive program. This is a must for any computer musician! Some things I'd like to see added however is a key or mood selection because I don't see one. Also, I don't see scale selections. I think scale selection with an on/off ability would be useful. Also, the scales and templates could use more variation beyond Western styles to include Eastern influenced scales and World music templates as well as more Modern but less mainstream or conventional template, scale, and rhythmic choices. Lastly, I don't know if the suggestion of adding melodic development would ruin the ease of using Chordbot, but this is another area that I could use help in my compositions. Thanks for this major leap forward!
Update wiped out HALF the styles!
by neeboy74 on 2013/01/10 16:02
This was my favorite music app until the recent update. Sure, the new interface is great...but literally HALF the styles are gone! I had a bunch of songs written in specific styles and now they sound TERRIBLE because those original styles went POOF! Nice "update"...he must have been bought out by Microsoft.
Still a gem!!
by Senrabad on 2013/01/10 09:32
This app is just about perfect for what it does and in my experience, there are none better on the app store right now for playing with chord progressions. The developers keep adding awesome new functionality in upgrades. definitely among my top 5 music apps. The latest version adds some cool new functinality with the stylle mixer and chord inversioms with auto or manual inversion sekectin. This really helps in making good-sounding progressions. The interface is still elegant, but I do wonder why they exposed the mixer as the top-level style ui (new users may have trouble with the mixer) but at least the presets are still available (though slightly buried),
Impressed!

An intuitive, creative, and streamlined app just got better...and this from an app that was already just about perfect. The mixer and abundance of styles allows the user to tweak chord progressions for a more song-like experience. And the developer wisely improved the app without bogging it down with lots if fluff or changing up the workflow that was already a fast and spontaneous experience...I don't need a studio, after all; just an app that allows me brain-storm chord progressions and song ideas. This is that app--it simply works!!!
Best so far
by Geewhizpat on 2013/01/01 19:20
Now this is an app that is worth the purchase...as a contemporary synth player...I am constantly writing soundscapes for new tunes...this is a great app for sketching ideas...I particularly like the ability to use slash chords...all the critiques for improvement I agree with...even without those improvements I am definitely getting my money's worth as a working pro musician...buy it!

Needs playback fix!
by Jelder123456789 on 2012/07/25 03:39
Just started the app and made a simple progression with a verse, chorus, and chorus 2. Playback glitches and will start in the wrong section (I want to start on the 3rd but it begins 1/2 way through the 2nd every time). I read the manual and it seems to be a glitch, not a user error. What gives? Also needs an easy way to move sections around in a song (change their order)
Great app!
by KevMitts on 2012/06/06 13:51
This is really a wonderful app. It's easy to use but the results are incredible! I use it to set up chords to songs and send them to friends so they know how the song goes. I also use it to practice leads and licks. The Song-O-Matic option is great for coming up with interesting chord progressions and for practicing. The export feature is icing on the cake. The app works flawlessly.
Great app
by P1an0man on 2012/04/26 06:50
I love this app. I just wish I could make chord changes in between beats like on eighth notes or even sixteenth notes. style changes with new sections would also be awesome.
The MOST COMPLETE CHORD APP!
by J.Troup on 2012/04/23 08:04
I'm a music producer and songwriter with very limited key skills. The ability to plug in my chord progression and choose a styling makes songwriting a breeze. And for those times I can't figure out what chords I need to compliment my melody, it's perfect! And the Auto Inversion feature is GENIUS! I discovered that on accident and almost crashed my car when I figured out what it was doing! This app is already a staple in my music, as I've used it for 3 songs already. I can't wait to see what's in the update!

by JS ALW on 2012/01/02 20:30
Truly excellent for sketching out ideas anywhere. Portions of the UI could use refinement (tapping on the main area to return from an option menu, dragging and dropping chords, maybe, measure dividers to remind me where I am.) This is a fundamentally excellent app, though, and I love using it.
Thank you.
Nebben

- KD Jones

Not BIAB but great portable tool
by FlyingSinger on 2011/09/16 16:48
I've used Band in a Box a lot on PC for songwriting support, to try out chord progressions and styles (zillions available) and sometimes even to make a starting track for recording demos (MIDI transfer to SONAR). Chordbot is similar but on a smaller scale (with a lot cleaner interface). The concept and interface are great, and what styles and sounds exist are very good, but it would be nice to have more, even as an in-app purchase since making more styles is clearly more work (and a potential income stream) for the developer. Also for those styles that have drums, a check box to turn drums off would be nice. And also a way to insert a duration with "no chord" (rest or break) would be great. Allowing user-defined styles via MIDI would be cool but probably would require a more complex UI. So room to grow but I still have to give it 5 stars!
technically flexible with few hiccups
by Jwazzzz on 2013/03/28 01:32
Chordbot offers excellent export options though the .midi file option does need more general midi export refinement so each track is exported and subsequently able to be imported cleanly.

Really Good...

Also good. Get it.

Excellent!
by primesounds on 2011/06/29 06:19
This is an excellent and highly useful app for song creation. Thank you the audio copy/paste, that's extremely useful. A couple of suggestions: 1. If its possible, it would be great to set a play pattern (dramatica, hammered, reef, etc) for each chord, so you could create a track with multiple styles; 2. Being able to select an octave for a chord would also be great, although your built in octave selection algorithm does a fairly intuitive job of that. Still, having that control would be great; 3. add the ability to create multiple sets of chord progressions per song, then have the ability to arrange and trigger those groups in whatever order you want. See Xenon for an example of a very good pattern editor and sequencer, as well as iSequence. But that's a big "next step". Great job, thanks!
It's OK
by AppDev11 on 2011/08/17 11:28
It's a somewhat useful app, but for $4.99 (!) I expected it to be far more robust than the free version, which it's not. At all. The only real difference ended up being the number of available sound-sets (which is nice). Problem: It does not have iOS4 multitasking support, so sound stops when you switch away from the app - very annoying. Will give it five stars when the day comes that it offers support for different tempos per measure, downward transposition, the ability to assign a different style to a different chord, and a wider variety of sound styles/genres (NOT just a greater number of sound sets) as it is very stylistically myopic at present.

Few apps keep my attention - let alone deliver on their promise. This will be my first review. In fact, I usually don't bother to rate Apps as I delete them. But - ChordBot deserves the recognition! Now, you can easily compose custom progressions, jot down ideas or just browse the rich content for an accompaniment to match your message and mood. Need inspiration? Don't wait. Install now.
Best so far
by Geewhizpat on 2013/01/01 19:20
Now this is an app that is worth the purchase...as a contemporary synth player...I am constantly writing soundscapes for new tunes...this is a great app for sketching ideas...I particularly like the ability to use slash chords...all the critiques for improvement I agree with...even without those improvements I am definitely getting my money's worth as a working pro musician...buy it!

Great app!
by KevMitts on 2012/06/06 13:51
This is really a wonderful app.
It's About Time! Now Six Stars!
by arrrrt on 2013/01/18 23:18
I've been waiting for an IPad version... it's finally here and it's unbeatable. It was worth the wait. It does a great job and is fairly intuitive as well. Update One day later... the more I use it, the more I like it. In some ways it's better than Band-In-A-Box, which has been around for decades. Best music app anywhere? Maybe.
Buy it!
Great app
by Nevlim on 2014/11/21 15:45
I use it everyday for putting together backing tracks for my solo act. Has all the chords I use for jazz and blues backing. Great for exchange of ideas with my band too. I'm able to put together grooves in less than 15 minutes. Great app. Look forward to improvements like addition of eighth notes.
I also use it to practice scales and melodic ideas over harmonies.
helpful app
by jennacide on 2014/12/01 23:55
I find this to be an essential app, but I had an earlier version and I liked that one much better. I wish the comping styles were broken down into sections and guitar/piano, to make it easier to find the right style. Anyway I don't know of any other app that does what this app does, but I still wish it cost less.
Incredible update
by Aman Bansil on 2017/03/14 05:35
Wow this developer just made this 1000x better. I liked the app before. However it involved too much flipping though menus. But now, this new interface has made things so much easier. In the iPad, it's really really good. 5/5 for sure. Amazing design upgrade. Good job dev!

Thank you.
Great App!

Nebben
AMAZING.

Save often! Save often! And wouldn't hurt to save 2 files of the same song.

by Gstaff100 on 2015/03/23 22:14

Best, easiest, and fastest way to make backing tracks

I needed an easy way to make modal backing tracks in all keys because it would have taken forever to make them myself. This app has many options and sounds good. You also have the ability to have a bass note of your choosing under the chord which is essential when creating modal jam tracks. I'm very please to have found this app.

Brilliant
by cube-b on 2014/10/06 16:23
This is an amazing app.

No portrait mode!!
by Xextriz on 2013/12/21 15:48

by bravocharlietango on 2013/12/07 02:23
I am so blown away by this app -- the musicality built into this program. It is sooo useful to the songwriter. And the variety of comping styles is amazing. An incredible amount of homework was done for sure! One ask: ability to drag chords around to easily change the progression.
Awesome! But doesn't work!
by anonymouslix on 2013/11/21 01:13

So if your play button is non functional, just erase some unused stuff from your device.
wrong inversion

Now Six Stars!
by arrrrt on 2013/01/18 23:18
I've been waiting for an IPad version... it's finally here and it's unbeatable. It was worth the wait. It does a great job and is fairly intuitive as well. Update One day later... the more I use it, the more I like it. In some ways it's better than Band-In-A-Box, which has been around for decades. Best music app anywhere? Maybe.
Fantabulous
by ShivShivShiv on 2013/01/14 03:19
I love this -- have been waiting for this for years.
One of the most useful music apps
by Conrad-k on 2013/01/12 06:49
This app is a songwriters dream. If you are interested in a tool that will allow you to easily map out the structure of a song in an easy and comprehensive manner, this is the app to do it. The sounds are more than good enough for their purpose and the selection of chords and inversions seems to cover every possible variation. If you are a songwriter and don't have this app you are missing out. This app is awesome!!!
Holy Update, Batman!

The interface is still elegant, but I do wonder why they exposed the mixer as the top-level style ui (new users may have trouble with the mixer) but at least the presets are still available (though slightly buried),
Impressed!

A Music Sketchbook Supreme
by SynthyMiranda on 2013/01/09 20:25
An intuitive, creative, and streamlined app just got better...and this from an app that was already just about perfect.

Simple but perfect!

Excellent
by JS ALW on 2012/01/02 20:30
Truly excellent for sketching out ideas anywhere. Portions of the UI could use refinement (tapping on the main area to return from an option menu, dragging and dropping chords, maybe, measure dividers to remind me where I am.) This is a fundamentally excellent app, though, and I love using it.
Thank you.
Nebben

- KD Jones

Brilliant

A Music Sketchbook Supreme

An intuitive, creative, and streamlined app just got better...and this from an app that was already just about perfect. The mixer and abundance of styles allows the user to tweak chord progressions for a more song-like experience. And the developer wisely improved the app without bogging it down with lots if fluff or changing up the workflow that was already a fast and spontaneous experience...I don't need a studio, after all; just an app that allows me brain-storm chord progressions and song ideas. This is that app--it simply works!!!
Really Good...

Also good. Get it.
Excellent!

Fantabulous
by ShivShivShiv on 2013/01/14 03:19
I love this -- have been waiting for this for years. I just got it today and have already written and saved 3 songs. It is very intuitive. This is just what I need for practice, and composition. If you can get sections to play on command like ableton live (waiting for the previous section to finish) in the section view, this would become the default application for performance.
The secret App you can't compose without
by David Simon, Next! on 2011/08/27 05:48
Few apps keep my attention - let alone deliver on their promise.
Best so far
by Geewhizpat on 2013/01/01 19:20
Now this is an app that is worth the purchase...as a contemporary synth player...I am constantly writing soundscapes for new tunes...this is a great app for sketching ideas...I particularly like the ability to use slash chords...all the critiques for improvement I agree with...even without those improvements I am definitely getting my money's worth as a working pro musician...buy it!
Great app!
by KevMitts on 2012/06/06 13:51
This is really a wonderful app.
Maybe.
Buy it!
Great app
by Nevlim on 2014/11/21 15:45
I use it everyday for putting together backing tracks for my solo act. Has all the chords I use for jazz and blues backing. Great for exchange of ideas with my band too. I'm able to put together grooves in less than 15 minutes. Great app. Look forward to improvements like addition of eighth notes.
I also use it to practice scales and melodic ideas over harmonies.
helpful app
by jennacide on 2014/12/01 23:55
I find this to be an essential app, but I had an earlier version and I liked that one much better.
