Update: As soon as I posted this review the app started working again. Raising to 2 stars until I see this is not a short-term fix. Tried syncing and got continual failures. Deleted and reinstalled the app and now can’t login. I’ve noticed several reviews with these issues. This needs to be fixed!

Your app doesn’t sync. Using iPhone 12 Pro. There is no communication on if the app is down. 0 way to contact to help except through the store review. I haven’t been able to use the app for 1 year. Maybe one day you guys will figure it out just wish my ward didn’t rely on it so much. Would love to also be in the loop on changes in Ministring companions. Please fix soon. Update* had to reinstall twice, change my password to get it working and then it only worked on data.

The member tools app is good at showing you the people in your ward. However, it doesn’t perform any updates at all when I change my info. My photos are super old and I had to ask my ward clerk to update my contact info because every time I did it reverted back after I closed and reopened the app. Very frustrating user experience. Also, when I moved wards I had to uninstall and reinstall the up for the sync to work, otherwise it just showed the spinning circle indefinitely as if it was syncing but it never finished. I would love it if the church would put a little more work into the app. As a small business software developer, I can tell you that we would go out of business if our app performed like this one.

My tools app has refused to sync for a few months. My husband’s app does the same thing. We have been unable to sync since February, so the ward info we have is super outdated. Please issue an update to fix this bug!

This app is just THE WORST. Every single time I open it, it prompts me to sync my information, then the sync fails and after so many attempts I am not able to see any information but my own. It’s always slow. Every time I try to upload a new picture of my family it fails. Please fix everything. Maybe have the mobile team of familysearch help you out, they have created an awesome app.

The developers have done pretty incredible putting everything in here. The attendance portion is no longer working and I am not able to report sacrament attendance for the current month.

I don’t know what to tell you, I’ve used this app for years. I’ve had to delete and reinstall numerous times, it often doesn’t sync, and it arbitrarily logs me off. It’s so useful and has so many amazing features, I just wish it was consistent.

App never updates when it needs to. I set the settings to update automatically, but it doesn’t. Then I get locked out! It won’t sync, and then I have to delete the app, wait a day, redownload it, and try again. Happens very couple of months and has for some time! Hate this app, one of the worst when it comes to maintaining updates and syncing.

Please link the “Tools” and “Living” calendars so input of youth/children activities only need input once. As a parent with multiple youth in multiple areas I expect to see their relevant activity information in one app. If we are expected to only use the Living app and circles for communicating it would be nice for the calendar to be linked to the calendar in the tools app.

I love this app and if/once it gets fixed will happily give it 5 stars but good grief, I tried to log on today to get temple/stake information and the entire app just died. I couldn’t sync the app so stuff wouldn’t load, so I tried signing out, then I learned I couldn’t sign back in (I even reset my password in case I just was remembering it wrong), so I deleted the app and reinstalled it, that still didn’t work. So now I’m just sitting here trying to figure out if there’s any way to redownload a previous version so I can get my app back 😅 if we can just go back one update it would be great! It’s just this latest update that seems to have killed it 😔

Got bombarded with a “can’t sync” error. To try some basic troubleshooting with the issue, signed out and went to sign back in, now unable to sign in making app’s functionality completely useless.

Usually works well but recently the app is having problems. First, it hadn’t been able to sync in a month. I received notification I needed to sync the app before an upcoming date. Since I can’t sync I deleted the app and reloaded it on my iPhone. Now when I try to log into the app it tells me I have a log in fail.

App used to be great. Starting in December 2020 it failed to sync every attempt, both by auto and manual syncing. I needed updated info, so I uninstalled and reinstalled. Now it fails to log me in at all. Set a new password on the web, and it still won’t log me in. Useless.

The app worked rather well... till the stake was divided at the time if an app update. It would not fully update the the new data. After two weeks I was finally able to login and the app is working smoothly. The problem seemed to have something to do with face login. This is app is a must have. When it was not working, I missed it dearly.

Right now the application only works 75% of the time. It also recently updated and stopped syncing. I think the application is useful but please get into a scrum workflow. Focus on reliability before adding features. Address the Tech debt on the backlog. Focus on this first and add some new features as time goes on. Make sure development practices are well established and code documented so anyone can maintain the code. Please fix the reliability of the application not recognizing a sync when performed also. Simplify user roles in the application. For example see what the stake holders think of allowing the advisors in Young Men or Young Women orgs to see all members of their groups.

I want to start by saying I have found much use in the app and it is very helpful if not slightly confusing at times. I however do have a reoccurring problem: the app will sign me out (I know why it does that), but then it refuses to let me interact with the log in screen at all. I tap, nothing. I close and reset the app (all of which require me touching my screen so I know it’s not my phone) and still nothing. The only solution I’ve found is deleting and reinstalling.

I’m sure this app would be a great way to locate other members’ numbers and view my ministry assignments IF I could ACTUALLY log into it in the first place. Keeps saying that there’s an error. The truth is this entire app is an error.

Feb 13-2021 The update released recent improved the stability but even the update from last week did not change anything. It still will not update the information it tells you that it cannot connect try again later. Every time I try it does not work on the update. - I even delegated the app and started over but now it will not let me log in. I am sorry while there has been improvements until it starts working as well as the last general version (3) I will have to leave it at one star. As soon as it fully functional I will give it the 5 stars it used to have. ________________________ Update - your last update helped so it did not make you sink every time you went to use the app. But now it tells you you have to sync and you hit the sync but it will not sync. I deleted the app and reinstalled it it but it will not let me sign in now. I beg you to go back to version 3 it worked very well. Version 4 has never worked. If there is a way to go back to 3 I would love it. Please help! This app is worthless at this point. This app worked great I think version 3 but once the auto update was added the quality of the app went down hill. Friday or Saturday of last week I went to use the app and it forced me to log into my account and then slowly downloaded the ward and stake information. Then Sunday when I needed it again it had logged me out and I tried to login again but it is so slow downloading the information times out and makes you TRY TO login again. Well I was unable to and gave up. Monday I was able to login again and then went to use the app again today and it logged me out again and once again I was not able to login again. Please go back to the version that did not have the so called auto update. On those versions I was able to sync the updated information and it did it fast and only occasionally did I have to login to the account I was able to use my thumb print or pin code to get into the app. Please get rid of this auto update and go back to the previous version before the automatic update started, it would have received a perfect score rather than one star. This current version is worthless because when you need it it has logged you out abs you can’t get back in. Thank you.

I don’t use this app every day, but every time I do, I have to log in with a new password. It doesn’t remember my password very long or they want it updated really often. It’s getting so I don’t want to bother with it anymore.

This app is a handy little thing to use and it’s awesome! Well, when it works, at least. It worked for the first little while, and it was nice to be able to find phone numbers so I can contact ward members. It’s a great way to see who to contact to get information on activities, meetings, etc. It’s a great app, but recently it hasn’t been working. It stopped working a few months ago. It randomly signed me out of my account and whenever I open the app, it brings me to the login screen. The problem with this is it won’t let me tap on anything, it won’t let me type in anything, no matter what I do it stays frozen in place. I have the app fully updated, including the most recent update from Feb. 3rd, but yet, it still does the same thing. I know other people such as my brother who are having the same problem. Please fix this! It’s not just a bug, it’s a major problem. I can’t even use the app or do anything with it except look at the pretty cover (which by the way is a beautiful color). Please, please, please fix this! Otherwise it’s an awesome app. It comes in handy to have. Nice job, with the exception of that problem, but otherwise it’s great 👍🏻

The app asked me to update which every time I tried failed. I logged out and tried to log in and it told me that the log in failed too. I changed my password and tried to log in again, and it didn’t work. I even saved my password from the church website to the phone and I used it to log in in the tools app but that didn’t work either. Now I can only access tools with the browser
Birthday List Bug

When viewing the Birthday List from Reports, it only shows birthdays in 2021 that are in December. It also shows birthdays that next will occur in January of 2022. Everything else is missing in the app, though they do show up on LCR in the Birthday List report. They also show up fine in the Android app (I have both device types). The bug just seems to be here in the iPhone app. Thank you!

Delete the app and do not install for two hours. Per Salt Lake phone call. It will sync then to current information. The app works great (when you have the current information). For those of us in the pilot program areas, the Progress Report in the app is a wonderful and helpful addition. Just docking a star for the syncing problems.

Becomes More Unstable With Each New Feature Release

I used to love the Tools app but there were SO many features I thought of that would make it better. Eventually some of those features came along, but it seems that with each new release, new features are added and old features become super buggy, if they work at all. For instance, right now the app is telling me that I need to sync or I will be locked out, yet when I try to sync, it says that it has failed. The maps under the meeting houses option just spins and spins and never actually loads. Most of the time pictures of families fail to load in the app, etc etc. I really want to love this app like I once did, but it’s really hard when it gets more unstable with each release.

The app never updates for me automatically even tho I have those options selected. It also fails to update manually every. Single. Time. It’s so frustrating. And for a good 3-4 weeks, no matter how much I tried to update it, it wouldn’t show like half my ward and stake and wouldn’t recognize what ward I was in, even though it looked perfect in a web browser. The only way that I’m able to get up to date info is by deleting and reinstalling.

Most of the time I am required to reinstall the app in order to refresh data. Why is this so difficult? LCR is my only, mostly-reliable source. Also, why was the phone integration with caller ID removed?

Lately it’s been telling me to update by September 11. Mind you it’s January 14 and totally up to date. It wouldn’t sync. I kept trying but no bueno, it wouldn’t sync no matter what. Finally I uninstalled the app and reinstalled. And can’t login! I know my password. I even reset it to be safe but that wasn’t necessary as I’d just re-logged into the church website and used the password plus changing my password was pointless. Still wouldn’t let me log in. I’ll be uninstalling for the time being coz it seems everyone with iPhone is having this issue and I’m not gonna go buy an android over it. Lol

So it use to sync and then not ask me till the next month or something like that. Now it asks to sync every time I get out of the app it’s ridiculous! It doesn’t need to sync that often and sometimes it doesn’t even finish the sync. It also won’t let me edit my families photo, I find that irritating too. Other then this it’s nice to keep up on numbers from the ward (if I don’t have to sync all the freaking time)

I haven’t been able to sync, update family photos, or even log in (after I uninstalled the app thinking that would help). I have changed my password on the main website twice in the last ten minutes and verified myself as well, yet the app won’t let me log in now. I hope they fix it as this is the most useful app the church has for doing callings and member service. Thanks

My wife and I both cannot get the device to sync. Neither manual or automatic synching work. We get failure messages consistently. I would love to help troubleshoot and provide more context. Also, I think it’s a shame that we don’t have any calendar integration functionality. It would be so nice to subscribe to ward or stake events.

As Primary President I live and die by this app and found it very useful and would have given 5 stars. Until I had to sync the app. With the update, I no longer have access to class lists, bdays, etc which I used daily. The app is now pretty useless to me.

I want desperately for this app to work, but have resolved myself to the fact that it won’t function as intended. I have found using the LCR on the web more accurate. Although the app is more convenient, it’s not trustworthy. I can’t get the information to sync. It continues to tell me there is an error. Surely there is someone at the church who can fix this app and make it useable by members. When this tool works it’s great, but when it won’t sync forget it. It stays stuck and no matter what I do it stays stuck. Please fix this problem. This tool is invaluable for multiple reasons. Very frustrating when it gets stuck trying to sync.
What happened to 2021 birthday

My app as of the 1st only shows every birthdate as the 2022 age. 2021 is not showing. This app is so relied upon and important. Some focus is needed to stabilize and fix. Please!

Sence an update about a year ago, I have not been able to access several reports that are normally available to all members. These are reports that would be very helpful in my current ward calling. After several tries to follow the instructions given by support , I am told these issues may not be able to be resolved for me.

And I haven’t been able to mark off ministering interviews this last week. It always kicks me out when I’m looking things up on it, then I have to log back in. The app hardly ever updates. I’ve tried using both automatic and manual updates. It takes forever, or stops and doesn’t actually update. The new app update doesn’t address their, and not I get an error that says to try again later. Seriously not worth keeping the app if it’s faster to login online to get the info I actually need.

I used to be able to set it such that the phone would use the Tools app as a caller id reference and hence display the name of folks in the church that were trying to call me. Now when I try to set that via phone settings it says “The data provided by Tools is invalid.”

App is a must have, but it has lots of problems! Sync freezes up frequently, information does not always sync correctly. I have looked at a record on the website and even after a sync, it does not show up on the app...even after several hours or a day. The list feature is not terribly useful. It is better than nothing, but could be so much better. Need the ability to add a list by role in a unit, that way if a list is created to send emails to the YW Presidents of each ward, for example, and one is changed, the list doesn’t have to be updated (that is helpful because sometimes that change is not always known for a while). Also need the ability to combine lists for emails. Right now, that can’t be done...wastes a lot of time to manually pull information to communicate.

This app would be amazing if it worked all the time. And my husband is Elders Quorum President and uses it all the time. But we both have trouble logging in. And then getting it updated. I put it to update automatically and it changes back to manually by itself. Then I have to go through the process of trying to get logged back in. It would be awesome if someone could get it fixed.

My ward no longer provides a paper directory so I have to rely on the app or my online account. This app has been quite frustrating, signing me out while I’m using it, and now I can’t sign in. I checked my sign in information on the Church’s website and I’m typing in the correct username and password but it won’t sign me in. With so many counting on this app to contact ward members, we really need a fix for it.

What brought me here is because between the months of August - December 2020 I had to change my password over a dozen times to gain access and majority of the time- after changing my password, I still can’t log in. Keep’s stating username or password is incorrect. Yes! I do remember my username and password every time I changed it. There also has been times the App freezes when syncing. This is often. Can’t change/update my profile picture. I was pointed to an alternative direction to change it on the church website but the directions/steps weren’t accurate. I moved into a new house during the middle of the pandemic and my family and I still don’t know anyone in our ward which split and we’re now in a new ward again. It would be nice to have a section in our LDS tools profile for members to input information about themselves such as bio, favorites, hobbies, etc. Make it easier to relate to others aside from being members. However, I have reached my limit with this app.
Suddenly Unable to Sync

Like several others note the app suddenly and recently stopped being able to finish it's sync process. This may have been triggered by multiple attempts to sync while the Church's web site was having seizures yesterday. Since the Church's web site became functional again I tried to sync repeatedly (because the app wouldn't let me do anything else), and I tried the usual iOS methods for removing and restoring the app. The fix this time was to go deep in iOS settings and delete the app along with it's data and documents. (Try Settings, General, iPhone Storage, open the Tools app listing and choose Delete App.) This app still needs fixing. Maybe allow customers to kill an obviously stalled sync process and/or clear failed sync downloads from within the app. Maybe prevent the app from trying to sync when Church web resources are glitching. Like others I've learned to expect the app to catastrophically fail at the most inopportune times and function reasonably well only when it's not really needed. Having functioned as a ward, assistant, or stake clerk for around 35 years this app is the only tool so far that has not been reliable. I've been wishing it would get better since it was made available. Function increases have been great. It now needs stability/reliability fixes.
Syncing Issue Resolved - Instructions

So the syncing issue, for me anyway, has been going on for quite some time. I’ve developed Apps in the past and finally had some time to dig in and dedicate to testing this one, to see if I could find a pattern to the issue. I’ve been able to reproduce the issue and fix it multiple times now. Here are steps I took to fix the Syncing issue. For reference I am on the latest update of iOS on an iPhone 11 Pro. - Here is the fix - Open the app and immediately click Help in the upper right of the screen, Click Sign Out / Reset and then OK. Then, Delete the App from your phone and then re-download it. Sign in and accept the permissions. Sign in and let it update. The update will likely take a while, a few minutes (3-5) for me. It should work. It worked for me a few times on a few devices. Here’s the other important thing. If you want to make updates much much faster go to Settings, under the More... menu and turn off Download Photos. The issue may actually be caused by turning on Download Photos. This is a great app, when it’s syncing. Enjoy.

This app is a handy little thing to use and it’s awesome! Well, when it works, at least. It worked for the first little while, and it was nice to be able to find phone numbers so I can contact ward members. It’s a great way to see who to contact to get information on activities, meetings, etc. It’s a great app, but recently it hasn’t been working. It stopped working a few months ago. It randomly signed me out of my account and whenever I open the app, it brings me to the login screen. The problem with this is it won’t let me tap on anything, it won’t let me type in anything, no matter what I do it stays frozen in place. I have the app fully updated, including the most recent update from Feb. 3rd, but yet, it still does the same thing. I know other people such as my brother who are having the same problem. Please fix this! It’s not just a bug, it’s a major problem. I can’t even use the app or do anything with it except look at the pretty cover (which by the way is a beautiful color). Please, please, please fix this! Otherwise it’s an awesome app. It comes in handy to have. Nice job, with the exception of that problem, but otherwise it’s great 👍🏻

I have been frustrated with app since was created. It is hard to sync, sometimes the app just don’t let you sync. I used to see the self reliance missionaries of my ward and know it says that i have no access to it. Sometimes I open it and close itself immediately. Sometimes just start syncing for ever and never end. Many times it says that my password and id is incorrect and i know it is not. I had to change passwords a lot because this don't let me used my real id and password. I took this app from my apps and put it back and still the same problem or a new one. I am just annoyed by the church’s apps. I have the same problems with the Gospel Library app, Memory and Family tree. For a week I wasn’t able to see all my memories. They just disappeared. I was so scared of losing my journal entries. Anyway, this is a negative review for another app. Please dedicate my time on this apps and fix these problems. I would not use this apps but because of my callings I have too. These apps are very useful when they work properly. Let take advantage of technology and make the best of this apps so we can do our callings better. Thank you.

I’m changing my review because the app has gotten better, but I do have another suggestion that came about because of a frustration. I’m living in a new area and recently there was an activity at the stake center. Well, the app kept sending my google maps to a location where there is no church building! I at least knew not to follow it, but then I was stuck for awhile trying to figure out how to get to the stake center. It was frustrating and I was late. I would appreciate it if in the “Chapels” tab, that instead of it just opening straight to a map that it first gives you the addresses of each building in YOUR STAKE and labels them (e.g. Stake Center, Ward 22, Sun Ward, etc.) so you can copy and paste the addresses. Then below that there should be the option to “open map” so you can see a map of all the buildings in the world like it already does. Thank you.

**UPDATE** This is the 2nd review I am sending in. Still having issues with syncing. Please take some time to fix this issue! I would like the benefit of being able to access ward information from my phone in order to fulfill my church calling. I haven’t really had any issues with this app in the past, but lately it has consistently been having issues with not being able to sync manually or automatically. Would really appreciate it if this app could have a major fix through, I use this app for my church calling constantly and it’s frustrating that the app isn’t working on my phone.
Hasn’t worked in months

I removed this app from my phone months ago, and every so often (once a month?) I try redownloading it to see if the issues have been fixed. Not a chance. I am not able to download/sync my data/properly sign in regardless of how often I uninstall and reinstall this app. It just stays stuck on the “updating” wheel. On the random occasions it does sign in (when whichever stars seem to be aligned), it refuses to remain signed in and/or doesn’t let me navigate away from the “Updates” page to access my actual information. I think the last time I was actually able to access my ward info from this app was maybe... June or July? I’ve kinda given up on the app. Maybe one day they’ll fix it, but in the meantime I have been using the church website’s Ward/Stake portal to get ministering and committee information—which is a lot worse in terms of design and UX, and is a headache to use, but at least it LOADS.

I am having syncing issues it seems. Not able to see current information in the directory. Member’s phone number is changed but I still see the old phone number. She and another sister I checked with is able to see the correct phone number. I have synced twice, no change. I turned off my phone and left it off for over three hours, and still the same. I have deleted the app, waited for several hours before installing again and the same thing. I have deleted it from all my devices, but no different. I do not get the option to reinstall, only to open because it is in the “cloud”. Please advise how to avoided installing the same corrupt app. It is not showing in iCloud in settings.

App is a must have, but it has lots of problems! Sync freezes up frequently, information does not always sync correctly. I have looked at a record on the website and even after a sync, it does not show up on the app...even after several hours or a day. The list feature is not terribly useful. Great app that makes it easy to connect to your ward, and easily contact anyone. The newest update has also made the UI much cleaner, and up to date with today’s standards. It is very nice. What would make it even better is having the ability to not I only search or categorize by last name, but by first name also. It would also be very helpful if all the pieces of information were standardized in their format such as the phone numbers where some appear with dashes, an others without them. The dashes make it much easier to read when you need to write down a phone number.

I use this app all the time and it works amazing! So glad we have an app like this now and how we can easily connect with the missionaries as well. There are only two things I would want changed to this app. First, is to be able to save events to other calendars than just apple calendar(I have an iPhone). It won't let me choose my Google calendar to transfer an event from the app calendar to my calendar. Second, it would be amazing to be able to add events in the app and not have to go to the website to do it. Thanks for all the amazing improvements that you keep putting into the app.
Constantly logs me out

App has worked great up until several months ago. Using iPhone 11. No longer remembers my credentials, kicks me out multiple times a day. Once I do log back in, after 3-5 minutes of updating it may or may not let me back in. Submitted a ticket for this issue and was given three steps: Turn off the mobile device completely, wait a couple of minutes, then turn it on again. Rebooting will reset the app. Delete the app, wait a few hours and then download it from the App Store or the Play Store. The wait time is crucial to ensure that the old version isn't pulled back up. Go to the More Menu > Settings > Refresh Data. This will kick-start the automatic updates as well. After going through the steps twice on separate occasions, still have the same issue.

I don’t know what happened but ever since the auto update feature came on board the information in the app doesn’t match what’s online. For instance, I moved a record in and online information confirmed it but after making numerous attempts to sync the member showed up in the member list but to this day doesn’t appear in the members moved in list. Moved a record out yesterday and he doesn’t show in any report in the app but does show online. The app is more convenient when in a meeting but only when the information is true and correct. I’d recommend getting rid of auto update until it can function correctly.
App no longer works for older devices

According to church app support, this app no longer works per new Apple protocols unless you have iOS 11 and higher. Nothing can be done. Older iOS will no longer work. They church app support suggestion is to do the online internet search to find the info needed. I can't update my OS because will lose access to 9 apps I paid for that no longer exists that I use weekly if not daily. Wish I had known about losing member tool access with the latest syn before hand. Would have saved important member contact info into contact app before hand. Just wanted to warn others that you may lose the app if you do the next syn, and sooner or later, all will have to syn. Older devices are being left behind as the church moves forward.
Stopped working

Around the beginning of 2020 the app stopped working. Occasionally I will be able to use it briefly before it starts “updating,” & seizes up. I’ve done everything—restarting the app, deleting & reinstalling the app, & even deleting it from settings. Nothing works. Since I have a leadership position this is really inconvenient. It seems to me like the church’s tech was great until the end of 2019. Then it was like they were too ambitious & trying to change everything at once. Websites & content that I used before couldn’t be found, apps (including Tools) weren't navigable & crashed, & I’ve even been disappointed with the Gospel Living app. It hasn’t delivered on promises. Perhaps covid has complicated everything? Maybe my 6S+ is too old to smoothly install the updates? I’m not sure. 😟

Normally I have no complaints about this app. It’s great and very useful! However, specifically this weekend when I’ve tried to do a manual update it’s been giving me an error message saying that the church site is down for maintenance. That’s not true. I’ve checked and the website works. I’m watching Conference right now through the Gospel Library which I believe it powered by fhe website. I’ve been on the website and it’s not down. What’s going on. I was at a friend’s for the morning session and her app was working just fine. Why doesn’t mine work?

It’s easy to take this for granted, but I remember the days of printed Stake directories. We have it good. I use this reliable, intuitive app for a hundred little tasks and questions: getting around on splits with missionaries, keeping track of kids’ names and birthdays, helping youth sign up for FamilySearch accounts, reviewing new move-ins, and much more. Would love to see in future releases: a map module like the one on LCR; my location and option for driving directions; ability for clerks etc to update info in the app; and reporting for HT (now ministering).

This app has been a lifesaver so many times for helping me stay in touch with my ward or fulfill callings! This year however it has been very hit and miss as to whether I can use it. Between mandatory syncs that freeze up, but still lock me out of my contacts until they are done, error messages when trying to contact support, and intermittent issues with biometrics for login, I never know if I’ll be able to use it or not. I appreciate the new features over the last few years, but can we please go back to basics and make the app reliable again before anything else?

I’m locked out of this app because it constantly tells me the church website is down for maintenance when I try to sync. That is completely untrue as I am able to log in to the church site easily every time. So it’s stuck on the opening sync screen, telling me it can’t sync. I have a new phone as of one year ago & I'm running a current iOS. I’ve deleted & reinstalled the app with no improvement. Since we no longer receive paper ward or stake directories, what are we supposed to do to reach other members when this app doesn’t work? This app is an important tool for members. It’s baffling to me that the developers still haven’t fixed it. It could be great but unfortunately it’s completely unusable. Please fix it!

I’m sure there’s a reason for it (I’ll reserve judgment on whether it’s a good one or not), but it’s seriously obnoxious, since if I’m opening the app, it’s because I want to look something up, but can’t until I jump through the required hoops. Please at least add an extension for 1Password so that when it forces me to sign in again for the 800th time I don’t have to leave LDS Tools, go into 1Password, and go back to LDS Tools. Small complaint? Maybe, but iOS has had the ability to use extensions since iOS 8, which was released in 2014.
Would the Church ever consider digital Temple Recomends?

I woke up early to go to the temple with my wife and son and when checking to make sure I had my recommend, I realized that I had misplaced it somehow. Anyway, I had to send the two of them off and it later occurred to me that this app shows my temple recommend status as being active. I don’t know if this would have sufficed, but it did give me pause thinking that a digital version, one that could be added to my ewallet would be very convenient.

The member tools app is good at showing you the people in your ward. However, it doesn’t perform any updates at all when I change my info. My photos are super old and I had to ask my ward clerk to update my contact info because every time I did it reverted back after I closed and reopened the app. Very frustrating user experience. Also, when I moved wards I had to uninstall and reinstall the up for the sync to work, otherwise it just showed the spinning circle indefinitely as if it was syncing but it never finished. I would love it if the church would put a little more work into the app. As a small business software developer, I can tell you that we would go out of business if our app performed like this one.

When it works it is wonderful. It just has too many random failures. For a while my password worked on my iPad but on my iPhone it wouldn’t accept the same password. Before it just lost all info in the middle of a bishopric meeting. And for a couple of weeks the app on my year-old iPhone XR has insisted on updating whenever I open it, even when it’s set for manual updates. Then it spends 10 minutes failing to update and finally tells me Tools is unavailable right now. As a bishop, I really need this app but I can’t count on using Tools on my phone—even though it works great on my old iPad. Please either get this fixed or give us another app.

This app seems like a decent enough idea in theory, but in practice it’s caused me a lot of grief. See, I haven’t been involved with the Mormon church in several years, but since the local membership and clergy has full access to my contact information (which I can’t seem to erase myself) I still get frequent contact from local leaders and members. I have no ill-will toward the local members in my area, but frankly they’re wasting their time with me. I’m not interested in going back to their church. Please, please update this with an option to either hide or erase my information so that the local members can focus on people who are actively interested in being involved.

I love this app and if/once it gets fixed will happily give it 5 stars but good grief, I tried to log on today to get temple/stake information and the entire app just died. I couldn’t sync the app so stuff wouldn’t load, so I tried signing out, then I learned I couldn’t sign back in (I even reset my password in case I just was remembering it wrong), so I deleted the app and reinstalled it, that still didn’t work. So now I’m just sitting here trying to figure out if there’s any way to redownload a previous version so I can get my app back 😅 if we can just go back one update it would be great! It’s just this latest update that seems to have killed it 😔
Bug with iOS 14

This tool works well except with iOS 14 you are no longer able to enable the app in the Phone->Call Blocking & Identification. When you select it, there is a pause and then an error message “The data provided by Tools was invalid. You may try enabling the extension again, and if the problem persists contact the application developer.” I have not found a way to contact the application developers at the church so hoping this review piques someone’s interest. This is a feature I love.

A useful tool when it works!

I want desperately for this app to work, but have resolved myself to the fact that it won’t function as intended. I have found using the LCR on the web more accurate. Although the app is more convenient, it’s not trustworthy. I can’t get the information to sync. It continues to tell me there is an error. Surely there is someone at the church who can fix this app and make it useable by members. When this tool works it’s great, but when it won’t sync forget it. It stays stuck and no matter what I do it stays stuck. Please fix this problem. This tool is invaluable for multiple reasons. Very frustrating when it gets stuck trying to sync.

Touch ID is pointless

I access this app about once a week. Not very often. Every single time I open it, it asks for my password, if I want to enable touch ID and if I want to sync it. Such a pain. Why cant it be like every other touch ID app and recognize it every single time? Whats the point of touch ID if you have to verify your password regardless? Let’s be honest, how much personal information is on here? My banking app has more personal information available than this app and I have only signed in once. That was when I installed it and set up touch ID. Now, touch ID works every single time. This app should have the same functionality or its just a waste of time.

I use this app a lot! When the last update in July 2020 came out, I could no longer sync my device (iPhone). However, once I deleted the app and reloaded it, the new features for security sign in popped up and everything worked again. All my lists for my calling and everything was there. This app makes my life a WHOLE lot easier than going to the LCR on the Church website for my callings. If you’re having trouble syncing, try uninstalling the app.
Difficult for the Elderly

The controls at the bottom are extremely difficult to use for my 92 year old father-in-law. Too small. Consideration needs to be given for poor eyesight and motor control. He relies on Member Tools as a member of the Elders Quorum Presidency, but it’s just too difficult to navigate compared to older versions. Having been required to update due to the fact that his version was no longer supported, he is now left with an app he struggles with. The same issue applies to LDS Library! Thanks.

This app is getting better all the time. One thing though, you really need to get rid of the notifications that appear on every single button press. When I press a button, I really don’t need a notification to tell me I pressed a button or a notification letting me know what process just happened. That seems like a debug feature and not something the user should be seeing.
Photo Upload

Overall the app is great. I love the functionality and being able to quickly see ward leadership and member contact information. One bug I’ve been running into is with the photo upload. I’ve been trying for weeks to change my family’s photo, but no matter how many times I try and no matter what picture I try, I get a message that the upload failed.
Needs serious attention

I’m appalled at how badly this app is set up. The security is unnecessarily tight, to the point of asking for the password even if you minimize the app, which can delete your work. Emailing organizations doesn’t work as the Send button is inexplicably frayed out. The pictures for members phase in and out of display unless you go all the way into individual pictures to refresh them. To whomever is managing this app, please take some time to redo the way the app handles basic things like syncing and displaying information, because much more basic apps can do it just fine.
Directory, not much more

It works as a directory just fine. But if you try and use other “tools” it has less than reliable results. I’ve reached out to the app support a number of times and just been told to restart the app. This has been through numerous updates, and the issue with the temples crashing whenever you try to look at a schedule or other info on a temple that is not your assigned one by the area. It happened when searching by name or nearby, and even happens on the assigned temple if you try and look more than a day in advance for a session schedule.

I understand that it is in Apple's best interest to do things that force people to buy new devices. I think it's a dishonest business practice, but I understand Apple is in the business of making money and crippling my device is one way they can force me to buy a new one. I don't understand the church playing along with that game, though. By making the church apps compatible with only the latest devices, I am forced to either shell out an irresponsible amount of money for the latest, greatest shiny thing, or go back to paper. For now I'm using paper manuals, texting numbers to other members of the presidency so they can enter my numbers in the quarterly report, and asking the clerk to print out paper versions of the lists and reports I need. I am grateful everyone is understanding and no one is asking things like, "So when are you going to upgrade so we don't have to do all this work for you?" I hate the position this has put me in.
Bugs around sign in and sync.

This app is great and super useful, except that it has had bugs for the last few years. Frequently I will open the app, sometimes it’ll ask me to sign in, which never work. Then when I sign out all the way, and try to log in again, it may or may not work, but then may not sync. I’ve hoped that new updates would address these issues. Today I couldn’t sign in at all, so I uninstalled the app and reinstalled it, and could sign in no problem. This has happened more than once and is a bit frustrating.

If you need to look up someone’s phone number really quickly, you’re looking at a minimum 15 minute process of logging in, and re-downloading all the data, but possibly an hour, or maybe you just need to try on a different day. It lets you set your thumb print to access, instead of typing in your password, but that expires every couple weeks, making that feature essentially useless. If you can get in, everything is organized really intuitively, and lets you call or text members right from the app. Good luck.

I like this app and use it often. I use my calendar on my phone for EVERYTHING! One thing I wish they would fix on this app is when I copy an event to my phone calendar from the lds tools calendar, and then I go back into my lds tools calendar, it takes me all the way back to “today’s” date. The only problem I'm finding is that as I looked up myself in the directory my name does not appear under the C category as it should but rather I find it under my wife's maiden name under the S category. I'm not particularly concerned about it but I am concerned that if my name is mixed up how many other names are mixed up as well, it might make it difficult to use if the directory is showing people under names they no longer use and perhaps people don't know.

The app no longer works for me. It asked me to re enter my user name and password. I did but it said it was invalid. I reset my password and that worked, but instead of opening the app it went to an update screen that I couldn’t get out of without choosing to update. I clicked to update, but it errored out without updating then went back to the sign in screen. Repeated this process multiple times with no change. I tried deleting the app and reinstalling it, but that didn’t work either. I’m at a loss now.

I unload and reload the app, I changed my password, nothing works. It worked fine for years, and suddenly I can't log in anymore. I'm signed in on my computer, but now I can't log in on my phone. (Which is where I need to be able to access addresses!) I've written customer support multiple times to no avail. What happened? It worked just fine for so long? I even got it to work for a few weeks a couple months ago, but then it started saying "downloading..this may take a couple of minutes depending on your connection." And it never downloads. It just sits there.

I actually called and spoke to someone in the tech department, explaining that many members do not run out and update their iPads to generation 6, and that the industry standard is to make software backwards compatible with previous versions of operating systems (such as iOS) so members don't suddenly lose the ability to use apps they have grown accustomed to using in their callings. Unfortunately, the response was: "Sorry, we only program for the most current operating system. You'll just have to upgrade." Note: I am a programmer - it's not that hard to make software compatible with older operating systems.

As other people have said I’m also having issues syncing new information. I’ve tried logging out logging back in, manually updating it, and deleting the app. It has repeatedly said member tools not able to sync try again later or has completely frozen. I’ve barely been able to get new information based on missionaries and ministering. I’ve tried everything that’s been advised and still have a corrupted app. It was great about two months ago but now it’s not the app it was before.

How do I change the member household picture? It looked like I was doing it at one point. I picked a picture, cropped it and everything but then it went back to the original photo.... or does my husband have to do it given that he’s the Head of the household or whatever? My child looks 8 in the photo but now graduated and doesn’t live with us anymore.

Original review: Switched phones, tried to download the app on my new phone. Nothing. It tries to sign me in and download the data but also fails. Super bummed about this because I rely on this app a LOT and I’m not sure what to do about it. Update: tried again a few hours later, worked just fine. Problem with editing information

It seems like no matter what, I have the hardest time trying to edit my info and update my photo. My photo is several years old and I try to update it and it always says a connection problem when that’s not the problem. It took me several times to update the contact information, I had to go online to change, delete the app and resign in to get it to update properly. The software needs to be rewritten for this part of the app.

This app has never had the best performance and with the latest update it has failed miserably. It kept telling me I needed to sync it. Even with a strong WiFi signal it wasn’t syncing and would get stuck in the same screen. I restarted it several times to no avail. I thought perhaps reinstalling would help, it only made it worse. It asked me to sign in, I did. Only the update screen would show and then it would ask me to sign in again. I tried this process several times. Very disappointing app. There is no support I’ve found to report this issue.

Update: As soon as I posted this review the app started working again. Raising to 2 stars until I see this is not a short-term fix. Tried syncing and got continual failures. Deleted and reinstalled the app and now can’t login. I’ve noticed several reviews with these issues. This needs to be fixed!

Your app doesn’t sync. Using iPhone 12 Pro. There is no communication on if the app is down. 0 way to contact to help except through the store review. I haven’t been able to use the app for 1 year. Maybe one day you guys will figure it out just wish my ward didn’t rely on it so much. Would love to also be in the loop on changes in Ministring companions. Please fix soon. Update* had to reinstall twice, change my password to get it working and then it only worked on data.

The member tools app is good at showing you the people in your ward. However, it doesn’t perform any updates at all when I change my info. My photos are super old and I had to ask my ward clerk to update my contact info because every time I did it reverted back after I closed and reopened the app. Very frustrating user experience. Also, when I moved wards I had to uninstall and reinstall the up for the sync to work, otherwise it just showed the spinning circle indefinitely as if it was syncing but it never finished. I would love it if the church would put a little more work into the app. As a small business software developer, I can tell you that we would go out of business if our app performed like this one.

This app is just THE WORST. Every single time I open it, it prompts me to sync my information, then the sync fails and after so many attempts I am not able to see any information but my own. It’s always slow. Every time I try to upload a new picture of my family it fails. Please fix everything. Maybe have the mobile team of familysearch help you out, they have created an awesome app.

Please link the “Tools” and “Living” calendars so input of youth/children activities only need input once. As a parent with multiple youth in multiple areas I expect to see their relevant activity information in one app. If we are expected to only use the Living app and circles for communicating it would be nice for the calendar to be linked to the calendar in the tools app.

I love this app and if/once it gets fixed will happily give it 5 stars but good grief, I tried to log on today to get temple/stake information and the entire app just died. I couldn’t sync the app so stuff wouldn’t load, so I tried signing out, then I learned I couldn’t sign back in (I even reset my password in case I just was remembering it wrong), so I deleted the app and reinstalled it, that still didn’t work. So now I’m just sitting here trying to figure out if there’s any way to redownload a previous version so I can get my app back 😅 if we can just go back one update it would be great! It’s just this latest update that seems to have killed it 😔

Usually works well but recently the app is having problems. First, it hadn’t been able to sync in a month. I received notification I needed to sync the app before an upcoming date. The app worked rather well... till the stake was divided at the time if an app update. It would not fully update the the new data. After two weeks I was finally able to login and the app is working smoothly. The problem seemed to have something to do with face login. This is app is a must have. When it was not working, I missed it dearly.

Right now the application only works 75% of the time. It also recently updated and stopped syncing. I think the application is useful but please get into a scrum workflow. Focus on reliability before adding features. Address the Tech debt on the backlog. Focus on this first and add some new features as time goes on. Make sure development practices are well established and code documented so anyone can maintain the code. Please fix the reliability of the application not recognizing a sync when performed also. Simplify user roles in the application. For example see what the stake holders think of allowing the advisors in Young Men or Young Women orgs to see all members of their groups.

I want to start by saying I have found much use in the app and it is very helpful if not slightly confusing at times. I however do have a reoccurring problem: the app will sign me out (I know why it does that), but then it refuses to let me interact with the log in screen at all. I tap, nothing. I close and reset the app (all of which require me touching my screen so I know it’s not my phone) and still nothing. The only solution I’ve found is deleting and reinstalling.

Feb 13-2021 The update released recent improved the stability but even the update from last week did not change anything. It still will not update the information it tells you that it cannot connect try again later. Every time I try it does not work on the update. - I even delegated the app and started over but now it will not let me log in. I am sorry while there has been improvements until it starts working as well as the last general version (3) I will have to leave it at one star. As soon as it fully functional I will give it the 5 stars it used to have. ________________________ Update - your last update helped so it did not make you sink every time you went to use the app. But now it tells you you have to sync and you hit the sync but it will not sync. I deleted the app and reinstalled it it but it will not let me sign in now. I beg you to go back to version 3 it worked very well. Version 4 has never worked. This app worked great I think version 3 but once the auto update was added the quality of the app went down hill. Friday or Saturday of last week I went to use the app and it forced me to log into my account and then slowly downloaded the ward and stake information. Then Sunday when I needed it again it had logged me out and I tried to login again but it is so slow downloading the information times out and makes you TRY TO login again. Well I was unable to and gave up. Monday I was able to login again and then went to use the app again today and it logged me out again and once again I was not able to login again. Please go back to the version that did not have the so called auto update. On those versions I was able to sync the updated information and it did it fast and only occasionally did I have to login to the account I was able to use my thumb print or pin code to get into the app. Please get rid of this auto update and go back to the previous version before the automatic update started, it would have received a perfect score rather than one star. This current version is worthless because when you need it it has logged you out abs you can’t get back in. Thank you.

This app is a handy little thing to use and it’s awesome! Well, when it works, at least. It worked for the first little while, and it was nice to be able to find phone numbers so I can contact ward members. It’s a great way to see who to contact to get information on activities, meetings, etc. It’s a great app, but recently it hasn’t been working. It stopped working a few months ago. It randomly signed me out of my account and whenever I open the app, it brings me to the login screen. The problem with this is it won’t let me tap on anything, it won’t let me type in anything, no matter what I do it stays frozen in place. I have the app fully updated, including the most recent update from Feb. 3rd, but yet, it still does the same thing. I know other people such as my brother who are having the same problem. Please fix this! It’s not just a bug, it’s a major problem. I can’t even use the app or do anything with it except look at the pretty cover (which by the way is a beautiful color). Please, please, please fix this! Otherwise it’s an awesome app. It comes in handy to have. Nice job, with the exception of that problem, but otherwise it’s great 👍🏻

I changed my password and tried to log in again, and it didn’t work. I even saved my password from the church website to the phone and I used it to log in in the tools app but that didn’t work either. Now I can only access tools with the browser
Birthday List Bug

When viewing the Birthday List from Reports, it only shows birthdays in 2021 that are in December. It also shows birthdays that next will occur in January of 2022. Everything else is missing in the app, though they do show up on LCR in the Birthday List report. They also show up fine in the Android app (I have both device types). The bug just seems to be here in the iPhone app. Thank you!

Delete the app and do not install for two hours. Per Salt Lake phone call. It will sync then to current information. The app works great (when you have the current information). For those of us in the pilot program areas, the Progress Report in the app is a wonderful and helpful addition. Just docking a star for the syncing problems.

I used to love the Tools app but there were SO many features I thought of that would make it better. Eventually some of those features came along, but it seems that with each new release, new features are added and old features become super buggy, if they work at all. For instance, right now the app is telling me that I need to sync or I will be locked out, yet when I try to sync, it says that it has failed. The maps under the meeting houses option just spins and spins and never actually loads. Most of the time pictures of families fail to load in the app, etc etc. I really want to love this app like I once did, but it’s really hard when it gets more unstable with each release.

So it use to sync and then not ask me till the next month or something like that. Now it asks to sync every time I get out of the app it’s ridiculous! It doesn’t need to sync that often and sometimes it doesn’t even finish the sync. It also won’t let me edit my families photo, I find that irritating too. Other then this it’s nice to keep up on numbers from the ward (if I don’t have to sync all the freaking time)

I have changed my password on the main website twice in the last ten minutes and verified myself as well, yet the app won’t let me log in now. My wife and I both cannot get the device to sync. Neither manual or automatic synching work. We get failure messages consistently. I would love to help troubleshoot and provide more context. Also, I think it’s a shame that we don’t have any calendar integration functionality. It would be so nice to subscribe to ward or stake events.

As Primary President I live and die by this app and found it very useful and would have given 5 stars. Until I had to sync the app. With the update, I no longer have access to class lists, bdays, etc which I used daily. The app is now pretty useless to me.

Although the app is more convenient, it’s not trustworthy. I can’t get the information to sync. It continues to tell me there is an error. Surely there is someone at the church who can fix this app and make it useable by members. When this tool works it’s great, but when it won’t sync forget it. It stays stuck and no matter what I do it stays stuck. Please fix this problem. This tool is invaluable for multiple reasons. Very frustrating when it gets stuck trying to sync.

Problem with lists

This app use to be amazing, but now it doesn’t want to update and I have to delete it and reinstall it often to update and sync. And I haven’t been able to mark off ministering interviews this last week. It always kicks me out when I’m looking things up on it, then I have to log back in. It’s still great since there aren’t other app options, but I wish it was smoother like it use to be.

The app hardly ever updates. I’ve tried using both automatic and manual updates. It takes forever, or stops and doesn’t actually update. The new app update doesn’t address their, and not I get an error that says to try again later. Seriously not worth keeping the app if it’s faster to login online to get the info I actually need.

I used to be able to set it such that the phone would use the Tools app as a caller id reference and hence display the name of folks in the church that were trying to call me. Now when I try to set that via phone settings it says “The data provided by Tools is invalid.”

App is a must have, but it has lots of problems! Sync freezes up frequently, information does not always sync correctly. I have looked at a record on the website and even after a sync, it does not show up on the app...even after several hours or a day. The list feature is not terribly useful. It is better than nothing, but could be so much better. Need the ability to add a list by role in a unit, that way if a list is created to send emails to the YW Presidents of each ward, for example, and one is changed, the list doesn’t have to be updated (that is helpful because sometimes that change is not always known for a while). Also need the ability to combine lists for emails. Right now, that can’t be done...wastes a lot of time to manually pull information to communicate.

This app would be amazing if it worked all the time. And my husband is Elders Quorum President and uses it all the time. But we both have trouble logging in. And then getting it updated. I put it to update automatically and it changes back to manually by itself. Then I have to go through the process of trying to get logged back in. It would be awesome if someone could get it fixed.

My ward no longer provides a paper directory so I have to rely on the app or my online account. This app has been quite frustrating, signing me out while I’m using it, and now I can’t sign in. I checked my sign in information on the Church’s website and I’m typing in the correct username and password but it won’t sign me in. With so many counting on this app to contact ward members, we really need a fix for it.

What brought me here is because between the months of August - December 2020 I had to change my password over a dozen times to gain access and majority of the time- after changing my password, I still can’t log in. Keep’s stating username or password is incorrect. Yes! I do remember my username and password every time I changed it. There also has been times the App freezes when syncing. This is often. Can’t change/update my profile picture. I was pointed to an alternative direction to change it on the church website but the directions/steps weren’t accurate. I moved into a new house during the middle of the pandemic and my family and I still don’t know anyone in our ward which split and we’re now in a new ward again. It would be nice to have a section in our LDS tools profile for members to input information about themselves such as bio, favorites, hobbies, etc. Make it easier to relate to others aside from being members. However, I have reached my limit with this app.
Suddenly Unable to Sync

Like several others note the app suddenly and recently stopped being able to finish it's sync process. This may have been triggered by multiple attempts to sync while the Church's web site was having seizures yesterday. Since the Church's web site became functional again I tried to sync repeatedly (because the app wouldn't let me do anything else), and I tried the usual iOS methods for removing and restoring the app. The fix this time was to go deep in iOS settings and delete the app along with it's data and documents. (Try Settings, General, iPhone Storage, open the Tools app listing and choose Delete App.) This app still needs fixing. Maybe allow customers to kill an obviously stalled sync process and/or clear failed sync downloads from within the app. Maybe prevent the app from trying to sync when Church web resources are glitching. Like others I've learned to expect the app to catastrophically fail at the most inopportune times and function reasonably well only when it's not really needed. Having functioned as a ward, assistant, or stake clerk for around 35 years this app is the only tool so far that has not been reliable. I've been wishing it would get better since it was made available. Function increases have been great. It now needs stability/reliability fixes.
Syncing Issue Resolved - Instructions

So the syncing issue, for me anyway, has been going on for quite some time. I’ve developed Apps in the past and finally had some time to dig in and dedicate to testing this one, to see if I could find a pattern to the issue. I’ve been able to reproduce the issue and fix it multiple times now. Here are steps I took to fix the Syncing issue. For reference I am on the latest update of iOS on an iPhone 11 Pro. - Here is the fix - Open the app and immediately click Help in the upper right of the screen, Click Sign Out / Reset and then OK. Then, Delete the App from your phone and then re-download it. Sign in and accept the permissions. Sign in and let it update. The update will likely take a while, a few minutes (3-5) for me. It should work. It worked for me a few times on a few devices. Here’s the other important thing. If you want to make updates much much faster go to Settings, under the More... menu and turn off Download Photos. The issue may actually be caused by turning on Download Photos. This is a great app, when it’s syncing. Enjoy.

This app is a handy little thing to use and it’s awesome! Well, when it works, at least. It worked for the first little while, and it was nice to be able to find phone numbers so I can contact ward members. It’s a great way to see who to contact to get information on activities, meetings, etc. It’s a great app, but recently it hasn’t been working. It stopped working a few months ago. It randomly signed me out of my account and whenever I open the app, it brings me to the login screen. The problem with this is it won’t let me tap on anything, it won’t let me type in anything, no matter what I do it stays frozen in place. I have the app fully updated, including the most recent update from Feb. 3rd, but yet, it still does the same thing. I know other people such as my brother who are having the same problem. Please fix this! It’s not just a bug, it’s a major problem. I can’t even use the app or do anything with it except look at the pretty cover (which by the way is a beautiful color). Please, please, please fix this! Otherwise it’s an awesome app. It comes in handy to have. Nice job, with the exception of that problem, but otherwise it’s great 👍🏻

I have been frustrated with app since was created. It is hard to sync, sometimes the app just don’t let you sync. I used to see the self reliance missionaries of my ward and know it says that i have no access to it. Sometimes I open it and close itself immediately. Sometimes just start syncing for ever and never end. Many times it says that my password and id is incorrect and i know it is not. I had to change passwords a lot because this don't let me used my real id and password. I took this app from my apps and put it back and still the same problem or a new one. I am just annoyed by the church’s apps. I have the same problems with the Gospel Library app, Memory and Family tree. For a week I wasn’t able to see all my memories. They just disappeared. I was so scared of losing my journal entries. Anyway, this is a negative review for another app. Please dedicate my time on this apps and fix these problems. I would not use this apps but because of my callings I have too. These apps are very useful when they work properly. Let take advantage of technology and make the best of this apps so we can do our callings better. Thank you.

I’m changing my review because the app has gotten better, but I do have another suggestion that came about because of a frustration. I’m living in a new area and recently there was an activity at the stake center. Well, the app kept sending my google maps to a location where there is no church building! I at least knew not to follow it, but then I was stuck for awhile trying to figure out how to get to the stake center. It was frustrating and I was late. I would appreciate it if in the “Chapels” tab, that instead of it just opening straight to a map that it first gives you the addresses of each building in YOUR STAKE and labels them (e.g. Stake Center, Ward 22, Sun Ward, etc.) so you can copy and paste the addresses. Then below that there should be the option to “open map” so you can see a map of all the buildings in the world like it already does. Thank you.

I would like the benefit of being able to access ward information from my phone in order to fulfill my church calling. I haven’t really had any issues with this app in the past, but lately it has consistently been having issues with not being able to sync manually or automatically. Would really appreciate it if this app could have a major fix through, I use this app for my church calling constantly and it’s frustrating that the app isn’t working on my phone.

I removed this app from my phone months ago, and every so often (once a month?) I try redownloading it to see if the issues have been fixed. Not a chance. I am not able to download/sync my data/properly sign in regardless of how often I uninstall and reinstall this app. It just stays stuck on the “updating” wheel. On the random occasions it does sign in (when whichever stars seem to be aligned), it refuses to remain signed in and/or doesn’t let me navigate away from the “Updates” page to access my actual information. I think the last time I was actually able to access my ward info from this app was maybe... June or July? I’ve kinda given up on the app. Maybe one day they’ll fix it, but in the meantime I have been using the church website’s Ward/Stake portal to get ministering and committee information—which is a lot worse in terms of design and UX, and is a headache to use, but at least it LOADS.

I am having syncing issues it seems. Not able to see current information in the directory. Member’s phone number is changed but I still see the old phone number. She and another sister I checked with is able to see the correct phone number. I have synced twice, no change. I turned off my phone and left it off for over three hours, and still the same. I have deleted the app, waited for several hours before installing again and the same thing. I have deleted it from all my devices, but no different. I do not get the option to reinstall, only to open because it is in the “cloud”. Please advise how to avoided installing the same corrupt app. It is not showing in iCloud in settings.

Great app that makes it easy to connect to your ward, and easily contact anyone. The newest update has also made the UI much cleaner, and up to date with today’s standards. It is very nice. What would make it even better is having the ability to not I only search or categorize by last name, but by first name also. It would also be very helpful if all the pieces of information were standardized in their format such as the phone numbers where some appear with dashes, an others without them. The dashes make it much easier to read when you need to write down a phone number.

I use this app all the time and it works amazing! So glad we have an app like this now and how we can easily connect with the missionaries as well. There are only two things I would want changed to this app. First, is to be able to save events to other calendars than just apple calendar(I have an iPhone). It won't let me choose my Google calendar to transfer an event from the app calendar to my calendar. Second, it would be amazing to be able to add events in the app and not have to go to the website to do it. Thanks for all the amazing improvements that you keep putting into the app.
Constantly logs me out

App has worked great up until several months ago. Using iPhone 11. No longer remembers my credentials, kicks me out multiple times a day. Once I do log back in, after 3-5 minutes of updating it may or may not let me back in. Submitted a ticket for this issue and was given three steps: Turn off the mobile device completely, wait a couple of minutes, then turn it on again. Rebooting will reset the app. Delete the app, wait a few hours and then download it from the App Store or the Play Store. The wait time is crucial to ensure that the old version isn't pulled back up. Go to the More Menu > Settings > Refresh Data. This will kick-start the automatic updates as well. After going through the steps twice on separate occasions, still have the same issue.

I don’t know what happened but ever since the auto update feature came on board the information in the app doesn’t match what’s online. For instance, I moved a record in and online information confirmed it but after making numerous attempts to sync the member showed up in the member list but to this day doesn’t appear in the members moved in list. Moved a record out yesterday and he doesn’t show in any report in the app but does show online. The app is more convenient when in a meeting but only when the information is true and correct. I’d recommend getting rid of auto update until it can function correctly.
App no longer works for older devices

According to church app support, this app no longer works per new Apple protocols unless you have iOS 11 and higher. Nothing can be done. Older iOS will no longer work. They church app support suggestion is to do the online internet search to find the info needed. I can't update my OS because will lose access to 9 apps I paid for that no longer exists that I use weekly if not daily. Wish I had known about losing member tool access with the latest syn before hand. Would have saved important member contact info into contact app before hand. Just wanted to warn others that you may lose the app if you do the next syn, and sooner or later, all will have to syn. Older devices are being left behind as the church moves forward.
Stopped working

Around the beginning of 2020 the app stopped working. Occasionally I will be able to use it briefly before it starts “updating,” & seizes up. I’ve done everything—restarting the app, deleting & reinstalling the app, & even deleting it from settings. Nothing works. Since I have a leadership position this is really inconvenient. It seems to me like the church’s tech was great until the end of 2019. Then it was like they were too ambitious & trying to change everything at once. Websites & content that I used before couldn’t be found, apps (including Tools) weren't navigable & crashed, & I’ve even been disappointed with the Gospel Living app. It hasn’t delivered on promises. Perhaps covid has complicated everything? Maybe my 6S+ is too old to smoothly install the updates? I’m not sure. 😟

Normally I have no complaints about this app. It’s great and very useful! However, specifically this weekend when I’ve tried to do a manual update it’s been giving me an error message saying that the church site is down for maintenance. That’s not true. I’ve checked and the website works. I’m watching Conference right now through the Gospel Library which I believe it powered by fhe website. I’ve been on the website and it’s not down. What’s going on. I was at a friend’s for the morning session and her app was working just fine. Why doesn’t mine work?

It’s easy to take this for granted, but I remember the days of printed Stake directories. We have it good. I use this reliable, intuitive app for a hundred little tasks and questions: getting around on splits with missionaries, keeping track of kids’ names and birthdays, helping youth sign up for FamilySearch accounts, reviewing new move-ins, and much more. Would love to see in future releases: a map module like the one on LCR; my location and option for driving directions; ability for clerks etc to update info in the app; and reporting for HT (now ministering).

This app has been a lifesaver so many times for helping me stay in touch with my ward or fulfill callings! This year however it has been very hit and miss as to whether I can use it. Between mandatory syncs that freeze up, but still lock me out of my contacts until they are done, error messages when trying to contact support, and intermittent issues with biometrics for login, I never know if I’ll be able to use it or not. I appreciate the new features over the last few years, but can we please go back to basics and make the app reliable again before anything else?

I’m locked out of this app because it constantly tells me the church website is down for maintenance when I try to sync. That is completely untrue as I am able to log in to the church site easily every time. So it’s stuck on the opening sync screen, telling me it can’t sync. I have a new phone as of one year ago & I'm running a current iOS. I’ve deleted & reinstalled the app with no improvement. Since we no longer receive paper ward or stake directories, what are we supposed to do to reach other members when this app doesn’t work? This app is an important tool for members. It’s baffling to me that the developers still haven’t fixed it. It could be great but unfortunately it’s completely unusable. Please fix it!

I’m sure there’s a reason for it (I’ll reserve judgment on whether it’s a good one or not), but it’s seriously obnoxious, since if I’m opening the app, it’s because I want to look something up, but can’t until I jump through the required hoops. Please at least add an extension for 1Password so that when it forces me to sign in again for the 800th time I don’t have to leave LDS Tools, go into 1Password, and go back to LDS Tools. Small complaint? Maybe, but iOS has had the ability to use extensions since iOS 8, which was released in 2014.

I woke up early to go to the temple with my wife and son and when checking to make sure I had my recommend, I realized that I had misplaced it somehow. Anyway, I had to send the two of them off and it later occurred to me that this app shows my temple recommend status as being active. I don’t know if this would have sufficed, but it did give me pause thinking that a digital version, one that could be added to my ewallet would be very convenient.

The member tools app is good at showing you the people in your ward. However, it doesn’t perform any updates at all when I change my info. My photos are super old and I had to ask my ward clerk to update my contact info because every time I did it reverted back after I closed and reopened the app. Very frustrating user experience. Also, when I moved wards I had to uninstall and reinstall the up for the sync to work, otherwise it just showed the spinning circle indefinitely as if it was syncing but it never finished. I would love it if the church would put a little more work into the app. As a small business software developer, I can tell you that we would go out of business if our app performed like this one.

When it works it is wonderful. It just has too many random failures. For a while my password worked on my iPad but on my iPhone it wouldn’t accept the same password. Before it just lost all info in the middle of a bishopric meeting. And for a couple of weeks the app on my year-old iPhone XR has insisted on updating whenever I open it, even when it’s set for manual updates. Then it spends 10 minutes failing to update and finally tells me Tools is unavailable right now. As a bishop, I really need this app but I can’t count on using Tools on my phone—even though it works great on my old iPad. Please either get this fixed or give us another app.

This app seems like a decent enough idea in theory, but in practice it’s caused me a lot of grief. See, I haven’t been involved with the Mormon church in several years, but since the local membership and clergy has full access to my contact information (which I can’t seem to erase myself) I still get frequent contact from local leaders and members. I have no ill-will toward the local members in my area, but frankly they’re wasting their time with me. I’m not interested in going back to their church. Please, please update this with an option to either hide or erase my information so that the local members can focus on people who are actively interested in being involved.

I love this app and if/once it gets fixed will happily give it 5 stars but good grief, I tried to log on today to get temple/stake information and the entire app just died. I couldn’t sync the app so stuff wouldn’t load, so I tried signing out, then I learned I couldn’t sign back in (I even reset my password in case I just was remembering it wrong), so I deleted the app and reinstalled it, that still didn’t work. So now I’m just sitting here trying to figure out if there’s any way to redownload a previous version so I can get my app back 😅 if we can just go back one update it would be great! It’s just this latest update that seems to have killed it 😔
Bug with iOS 14

This tool works well except with iOS 14 you are no longer able to enable the app in the Phone->Call Blocking & Identification. When you select it, there is a pause and then an error message “The data provided by Tools was invalid. You may try enabling the extension again, and if the problem persists contact the application developer.” I have not found a way to contact the application developers at the church so hoping this review piques someone’s interest. This is a feature I love.

Touch ID is pointless

I access this app about once a week. Not very often. Every single time I open it, it asks for my password, if I want to enable touch ID and if I want to sync it. Such a pain. Why cant it be like every other touch ID app and recognize it every single time? Whats the point of touch ID if you have to verify your password regardless? Let’s be honest, how much personal information is on here? My banking app has more personal information available than this app and I have only signed in once. That was when I installed it and set up touch ID. Now, touch ID works every single time. This app should have the same functionality or its just a waste of time.
Update trouble fixed

I use this app a lot! When the last update in July 2020 came out, I could no longer sync my device (iPhone). However, once I deleted the app and reloaded it, the new features for security sign in popped up and everything worked again. All my lists for my calling and everything was there. This app makes my life a WHOLE lot easier than going to the LCR on the Church website for my callings. If you’re having trouble syncing, try uninstalling the app.
Difficult for the Elderly

The controls at the bottom are extremely difficult to use for my 92 year old father-in-law. Too small. Consideration needs to be given for poor eyesight and motor control. He relies on Member Tools as a member of the Elders Quorum Presidency, but it’s just too difficult to navigate compared to older versions. Having been required to update due to the fact that his version was no longer supported, he is now left with an app he struggles with. The same issue applies to LDS Library! Thanks.
Great Improvements

This app is getting better all the time. One thing though, you really need to get rid of the notifications that appear on every single button press. When I press a button, I really don’t need a notification to tell me I pressed a button or a notification letting me know what process just happened. That seems like a debug feature and not something the user should be seeing.
Photo Upload

Overall the app is great. I love the functionality and being able to quickly see ward leadership and member contact information. One bug I’ve been running into is with the photo upload. I’ve been trying for weeks to change my family’s photo, but no matter how many times I try and no matter what picture I try, I get a message that the upload failed.
Needs serious attention

I’m appalled at how badly this app is set up. The security is unnecessarily tight, to the point of asking for the password even if you minimize the app, which can delete your work. Emailing organizations doesn’t work as the Send button is inexplicably frayed out. The pictures for members phase in and out of display unless you go all the way into individual pictures to refresh them. To whomever is managing this app, please take some time to redo the way the app handles basic things like syncing and displaying information, because much more basic apps can do it just fine.
Directory, not much more

It works as a directory just fine. But if you try and use other “tools” it has less than reliable results. I’ve reached out to the app support a number of times and just been told to restart the app. This has been through numerous updates, and the issue with the temples crashing whenever you try to look at a schedule or other info on a temple that is not your assigned one by the area. It happened when searching by name or nearby, and even happens on the assigned temple if you try and look more than a day in advance for a session schedule.

I understand that it is in Apple's best interest to do things that force people to buy new devices. I think it's a dishonest business practice, but I understand Apple is in the business of making money and crippling my device is one way they can force me to buy a new one. I don't understand the church playing along with that game, though. By making the church apps compatible with only the latest devices, I am forced to either shell out an irresponsible amount of money for the latest, greatest shiny thing, or go back to paper. For now I'm using paper manuals, texting numbers to other members of the presidency so they can enter my numbers in the quarterly report, and asking the clerk to print out paper versions of the lists and reports I need. I am grateful everyone is understanding and no one is asking things like, "So when are you going to upgrade so we don't have to do all this work for you?" I hate the position this has put me in.
Bugs around sign in and sync.

This app is great and super useful, except that it has had bugs for the last few years. Frequently I will open the app, sometimes it’ll ask me to sign in, which never work. Then when I sign out all the way, and try to log in again, it may or may not work, but then may not sync. I’ve hoped that new updates would address these issues. Today I couldn’t sign in at all, so I uninstalled the app and reinstalled it, and could sign in no problem. This has happened more than once and is a bit frustrating.

If you need to look up someone’s phone number really quickly, you’re looking at a minimum 15 minute process of logging in, and re-downloading all the data, but possibly an hour, or maybe you just need to try on a different day. It lets you set your thumb print to access, instead of typing in your password, but that expires every couple weeks, making that feature essentially useless. If you can get in, everything is organized really intuitively, and lets you call or text members right from the app. Good luck.
Calendar

I like this app and use it often. I use my calendar on my phone for EVERYTHING! One thing I wish they would fix on this app is when I copy an event to my phone calendar from the lds tools calendar, and then I go back into my lds tools calendar, it takes me all the way back to “today’s” date. I wish it would go back to the date I was on. It is such a pain and takes forever to add church events from this calendar. PLEASE FIX THIS! Thanks!
Directory

The only problem I'm finding is that as I looked up myself in the directory my name does not appear under the C category as it should but rather I find it under my wife's maiden name under the S category. I'm not particularly concerned about it but I am concerned that if my name is mixed up how many other names are mixed up as well, it might make it difficult to use if the directory is showing people under names they no longer use and perhaps people don't know.
No longer works

The app no longer works for me. It asked me to re enter my user name and password. I did but it said it was invalid. I reset my password and that worked, but instead of opening the app it went to an update screen that I couldn’t get out of without choosing to update. I clicked to update, but it errored out without updating then went back to the sign in screen. Repeated this process multiple times with no change. I tried deleting the app and reinstalling it, but that didn’t work either. I’m at a loss now.

I unload and reload the app, I changed my password, nothing works. It worked fine for years, and suddenly I can't log in anymore. I'm signed in on my computer, but now I can't log in on my phone. (Which is where I need to be able to access addresses!) I've written customer support multiple times to no avail. What happened? It worked just fine for so long? I even got it to work for a few weeks a couple months ago, but then it started saying "downloading..this may take a couple of minutes depending on your connection." And it never downloads. It just sits there.
Disappointing programming

I actually called and spoke to someone in the tech department, explaining that many members do not run out and update their iPads to generation 6, and that the industry standard is to make software backwards compatible with previous versions of operating systems (such as iOS) so members don't suddenly lose the ability to use apps they have grown accustomed to using in their callings. Unfortunately, the response was: "Sorry, we only program for the most current operating system. You'll just have to upgrade." Note: I am a programmer - it's not that hard to make software compatible with older operating systems.
Syncing Issues

As other people have said I’m also having issues syncing new information. I’ve tried logging out logging back in, manually updating it, and deleting the app. It has repeatedly said member tools not able to sync try again later or has completely frozen. I’ve barely been able to get new information based on missionaries and ministering. I’ve tried everything that’s been advised and still have a corrupted app. It was great about two months ago but now it’s not the app it was before.

How do I change the member household picture? It looked like I was doing it at one point. I picked a picture, cropped it and everything but then it went back to the original photo.... or does my husband have to do it given that he’s the Head of the household or whatever? My child looks 8 in the photo but now graduated and doesn’t live with us anymore.

Original review: Switched phones, tried to download the app on my new phone. Nothing. It tries to sign me in and download the data but also fails. Super bummed about this because I rely on this app a LOT and I’m not sure what to do about it. Update: tried again a few hours later, worked just fine. Clearly some problems, but it’s such a good app overall that I increased it to 4 stars
Problem with editing information

It seems like no matter what, I have the hardest time trying to edit my info and update my photo. My photo is several years old and I try to update it and it always says a connection problem when that’s not the problem. It took me several times to update the contact information, I had to go online to change, delete the app and resign in to get it to update properly. The software needs to be rewritten for this part of the app.

This app has never had the best performance and with the latest update it has failed miserably. It kept telling me I needed to sync it. Even with a strong WiFi signal it wasn’t syncing and would get stuck in the same screen. I restarted it several times to no avail. I thought perhaps reinstalling would help, it only made it worse. It asked me to sign in, I did. Only the update screen would show and then it would ask me to sign in again. I tried this process several times. Very disappointing app. There is no support I’ve found to report this issue.
