Getting frustrated and no longer recommending
by reno drew on 2020/10/27 03:45
Just had the Mendeley app freeze up again for I pad. I still love it for writing, organizing but the I pad app is pretty bad right now. Please fix!
Function of drawing would be helpful for further improvement
by roga2020 on 2020/10/23 00:51
It’s good to read, but it would be better if I could keep draw in the file or I could add files to existing literature.
Please add sketching option
by Saeedrmd on 2020/10/17 00:24
Please add the sketching option in annotations. Many people prefer handwritten notes. Thank you
Better than the desktop app, still has kinks
by allthejoules on 2020/10/14 18:16
This app is fairly useful. I find it easy to organize my resources and refer back to material. I appreciate the cloud support, and noticed a significant improvement in the highlighting feature from the desktop application. However, the highlighting function in the iPad app only works with an Apple Pencil, and there are still some kinks to work out considering Apple Pencil compatibility. Additionally, I have had to reload article details for every third article or so to integrate my sources fully. This is a difficult and tedious process.
Doesn’t really work on iPad
by MoBesh on 2020/10/12 13:52
Mendeley doesn’t work on iPad. It works Fine on desktop computers.
Highlighting feature glitch
by Mk65248 on 2020/10/05 13:46
On my iPad, every time I leave the app while annotating a pdf, the existing highlights get a shade darker. This sounds trivial, but the colors get so dark I have to change the paper color to black so I can read the highlighted text (in white). Also, annotating features will randomly become disabled while reading and I have to leave the app and come back for them to turn back on. Some bug improvements in this realm would be great.
Getting better
by DillonMR on 2020/10/01 18:55
Seems like they have improved the app to address many complaints, but it really needs to support Apple Pencil markup to be a complete pdf editor. Hopefully this is added soon.
Mark up features are weak
by Retiroski on 2020/09/27 04:40
The ark up features are weak on the iPad. I prefer to readin Apple Books for highlighting and being able to write notes in the margin.
Desktop App is very useful, mobile app...not so much
by Comrade Rat on 2020/09/26 10:58
The App won’t sync with changes I’ve made to my desktop app, even when I manually tell it to. As a result I’m stuck dealing with an outdated local copy of my files on my phone, and an up to date cloud copy accessible by my online account and my desktop. Also, as far as I can tel there is no literature search on mobile (that or it’s very well hidden). Two stars may be generous :/
Used Mendeley for Years
by lemons808 on 2020/09/19 18:32
The desktop version has text highlight and “rectangle” highlight which allows you to highlight important text in flat (often old) PDFs. The iPad version lacks this option and is a major limiting factor in how useful the iPad app is. Glitches/error codes to not indicate the file that is causing the error. If not found right away, this makes errors almost impossible to fix without downloading a file format of the database and significant amounts of time. This things should be easy and reasonable to fix/implement but Mendeley does not seem interested in these improvements anymore. Been coasting since they bought the original program.
Stability improved a lot
by zhangtemplar on 2020/09/17 01:57
My first experience of it is it just crashes on launch but it is obviously fixed now. However the annotations function of pdf is barely usable. PDF reading is also buggy that it will jump to the first page.
A bit broken
by jScone on 2020/09/14 06:17
Freezes when it tries to sync in this version, but if you go fast and log out before it locks up, then log back in, it seems to fix the issue.
Lifesaver
by Mizjeza on 2020/09/10 20:11
This app is a dream come true for any grad student. It revolutionizes research by consolidating files and keeping references organized. I’m in love.
Not usable
by Jon.Wang on 2020/09/10 06:27
The app on iPad never pass syncing. For some reason, the whole app is frozen during syncing, therefore the app is completely useless. The development team really needs to focus more on iPad client as more people start using iPad to read and annotate papers.
Poor functionality reader
by 087g807ghuljkh on 2020/09/09 14:13
I appreciate the cost, and understand that this app is meant to be an adjunct reader to the desktop Mendeley program. However, even as a reader, there are a number of basic problems that make it problematic. Pros: Syncs up with desktop Mendeley so items display markups and highlights Displays and can edit article information Cons: Cannot rotate pages - this one feature is so basic as to be a head scratcher why this isn’t an option Can zoom in, but cannot zoom out to a desired view point setting Cannot crop pages (also a problem in the desktop version) There are better PDF viewers out there certainly, but the price is right for this one. Still, I am frustrated because the functionality of the desktop to integrate with statistical programming is great, but even as a reader, the iOS app does not have some basic requirements.
Elsevier...where innovation goes to die
by Thx1138r on 2020/09/06 14:44
Leave it to a corporate behemoth to ruin innovation. Hey Elsevier who is running your Mendeley business? You need to fire that entire division and hire people who know something about deploying an app that meets the needs of the end user. Without changes at the top Elsevier will become the Sears of the academic publishing world faster than you can say “paywall”.
Deleted Folders
by Gusbehid on 2020/09/03 13:31
Pros: Allows sync across devices Decent annotating capabilities Intuitive interface Cons: DELETED MY FOLDERS!! This is a huge deal, and based on the Mendeley support site, it looks like this has been a known problem since at least May. I’ve decided to switch reference managers. I can’t risk this happening again.
Apple Pencil Glitches
by Carlablob on 2020/09/02 18:17
I appreciate this app for the most part, but I find that the app frequently stops detecting my Apple Pencil when using it to highlight text, which is quite annoying. (Note for any other users with this issue: I usually find that quickly toggling the pencil mode from highlight mode to navigation/note and then back to highlight, usually resolves the issue temporarily). Aside from that, if it were easier to import files from within the mobile app, and if the app supported handwritten annotations, it would be perfect in my opinion.
Eeehhhhh

Its not a desktop replacement
Needs to be fixed in a permanent manner
by stodolli on 2020/08/27 02:01
It seems like the app keeps breaking every time there is an iOS update, whether major or minor. If it doesn’t crash completely right away, it becomes slow and eventually unresponsive until it crashes. Something must be seriously wrong and the developers need to fix this. When it worked well, it is an amazing app, but shame it rarely does anymore.
Now working!
by Dphurst on 2020/08/22 20:41
In Linux on a workstation it is fantastic, and now the iOS mobile app is working well. Delete your current version if it is constantly locking up. Download the newest version. Sign out and sign in. There is no progress bar on sync yet. But it does sync the library! I have about 3.1GB of uploaded PDFs. It has downloaded them! There is a dark mode for iOS! If you were disillusioned like I was, retry and see what you think. I am using an iPad Pro 10.5” w/iOS 13.6.1.
Better to have Note taking features by Apple Pencil

iPad App does not sync docs
by Eymerich71 on 2020/06/11 16:52
I have used MENDELEY for years, despite many frustrations, but the fact that I cannot sync the pdf on the iPad is making the whole experience even worst. I cannot highlight through the app and I do it on the pdf then I need to upload it again. Please fix this.
Please add citation ability
by CeciliaStarr on 2020/06/05 22:33
My iPad is my only computer, and I’m working on projects with large bibliographies. My word processors cannot download the LibreOffice plugin for automatic citations. It is very tedious to have to go to an on-campus computer, download Mendeley desktop, then copy the citations to an email and send them back to my iPad for editing. Please please please enable citations that can be copied and pasted from this app!
Keeps freezing up
by arkyaC on 2020/05/31 03:50
The app completely freezes up every now and then. Forces me to delete it and then reinstall. Very annoying.

Plenty of bugs
by MendelyUser2020 on 2020/04/19 17:17
I have been using Mendeley for years, I tried to use it with IOS and it was a mess. The main problem is sincronyzing the papers with the cloud. It does not update correctly. I made changes on the pdf and never gets uploaded to the Desktop. The amount of papers I have in a folder on my desktop or the website don’t match what it shows on the app. Very frustrating to use.
Not proper app for Mendeley
by Col1918 on 2020/04/11 22:13
I use the app on my Mac, my Android phone and my iPad. I found very frustrating this app because it lacks of intuitiveness for user. The sync ability is not properly working.
Highlight
by NMMstudent on 2020/04/02 22:05
The highlight doesn’t fully work on the app. Very poor use of highlight option, cannot continue on top of the continuing page.
Bugs now and then, but Good
by Umpa Doompa do on 2020/03/23 13:10
I’m using the app on the iPad, and I will say it’s super nice to have the conveniently synced files on my computer and on the iPad. I really like the apple pen integration. Some of the bugs that I have come across include double-syncing of the folders (two copies of all of my folders existed when I first got the app, and deleting one deleted them both), and the fact that the highlighted portions of the text get continually darker and darker each time I come back to the article, as if I highlighted the same portion over and over again.
Bad
by mlmlmlmlmlmlmlmlmlmlmlmlmlmlml on 2020/03/23 11:10
It was always buggy. Got much worse recently. PDF files on Dropbox it is....
Lacking
by jasgaravito on 2020/02/28 01:59
Its time they update the graphic interface, and the app itself so that it stays competent in today’s mobile world. Specially for iPads which are continuously taking traditional desktop tasks. I think that the integration as a plugin with Microsoft Word would be difficult on iOS, but at least enable an option to copy any reference in the selected format to the clipboard. This app, as it is, seems about 5-7 years behind.
Has potential to be much better
by Rohit S. on 2020/02/20 22:29
I really like how I can organize documents in Mendeley and have the metadata. But the app doesn’t allow me to write on PDF files with my Apple Pencil.
Great service - terrible bugs in iOS
by xxiijr on 2020/02/14 15:50
The service is great but the iOS starts crashing as soon as I add new articles from my laptop. This has been going on for years... The only solution iseems to be to delete the app, reinstall it and then Go over the library and choose articles to sync. Extremely frustrating!
I love it
by somehume on 2020/02/11 20:18
I’ve been using this consistently for two semesters and had used it previously before taking a break in my program. The interface isn’t Apple-class user friendly, but it is very useful. I haven’t experienced the PDF issues that some user’s have mentioned in reviews, but I’ve been actively reading PDFs this and last semester... in fact, I was only moments. I’d bump up to 5 stars if the interface got cleaned up a bit, but again... it works fine.

Almost perfect
by itbeTiffany on 2020/01/14 01:48
It is very easy to download, read, highlight, scroll, bounce from page to page, section to section, etc. I use Mendeley frequently for reading science articles. Devs, please consider adding the following: -ability to look at 2 or 4 pages at once -more noticeable highlights in dark mode Thank you
Disappointed
by redzv on 2020/01/06 20:37
I use Mendeley on windows and it’s really good. Expected the same for iPad but it doesn’t work. At all. Keeps getting stuck. Syncing takes a long time. I’ve had this app for more than a month now and I probably was able to use it just once, because every time I open it, it becomes unresponsive. I bought PaperShip and synced Mendeley account instead.
Glitches make it quite dysfunctional
by ajhqt on 2019/12/22 16:17
Currently my account name is sitting on top of the search bar making it impossible to search. I’ve restarted and re-installed with no luck in fixing this. Because there is no easy way to organize all your articles in this app (such as by author, journal, etc) and only by folders made on the desktop application, it is practically useless without the search ability. I don’t want to be required to go to my desktop and create a folder with specific articles every time I want to use the mobile app. Additionally in the portrait orientation, I can’t make an article full screen; it continually reopens the information panel. I’ve found rotating to landscape and making full screen then rotating back to portrait works. This is just a somewhat annoying glitch. With some improvements this could be a very powerful app in addition to the desktop software. Currently it is useless.
Missing the basics
by Xt3m on 2019/12/18 23:26
I do not want to sound like a broken record with all the other reviews. Yes, of course this app lacks some of the basic features from Mendeley desktop (sync of PDF cross platforms for instance). However, my real gripes here comes from the use that I have for this app. I use Mendeley most often as a word document plug-in to add citations throughout my research. Naturally I understand that Mendeley may not be cross compatible with the Microsoft word app. However, I would have appreciated if there existed at least a button (or a right click option) to just copy and paste formatted citations for a bibliography! If I can’t copy and paste citations I might just as well do it by hand on pen and paper :-( Please find a fix!
Very frustrating
by gato verde on 2019/12/17 20:02
The entire Mendeley ecosystem is extremely frustrating. Since purchasing this platform, Elsiever seems primarily concerned with just barely making this software function enough to avoid a total user revolt while doing god knows what with all the user data they are accumulating. The syncing is sporadic and unreliable. I now have so many versions of some articles that I may have to scrap everything and start from scratch. The app is glitchy and crashes often. Switching between landscape and portrait is a nightmare. The desktop version also has terrible syncing behavior, and even in 2019 they refuse to support high pixel density displays.
Could be so much better
by AH_AZ on 2019/12/16 05:28
I have numerous issues with Mendeley. What started out as a really promising product years ago has turned into the peddling of mediocrity. The workflow they use was fine earlier in the 2010s when things started, but for a much more mobile audience, it’s lacking. (1) Why is the pdf editor on any of its platforms not more robust? Why can’t I write with a pencil/pen tool on the PDFs directly instead of having to open the files in another program and then reimporting them? This is even worse on the iOS platform as compared to windows. Why is the highlighting tool not more robust and customizable? Why can’t I use a text tool directly on the pdf instead of having to resort to notes? (2) Annotation searches are a crapshoot at best and very on different platforms. (3) The searching tools and GUI are still quite clunky without any appreciable changes in goodness knows how long. Instead of reference managers trying to race to the top, everyone is just settling for ok. I expect more.
Please stop to support iPad.
by BClemma on 2019/12/11 01:23
I used mendeley desktop for mac for my reference management and love it. But after I installed mendeley for ipad, I decide to move my references to zotero which does not support ipad. Because, I’ve never seen this app works more than 3 days. The app always freezes and cannot open the references. First time, I tried to reinstall app and that works! Only for 2 days. Next, I tried to use web, that was too slow. Lately, I sync mendeley storage with my dropbox and face the errors. Mendeley, if you read this review, please stop to support ipad. I am sure this app makes people leave mendeley. This app bothers user to give hope that this app will be stable.

by jagdap on 2019/12/03 12:26
Besides some minor glitches when syncing with the cloud, this has been a great way to track and annotate articles for ,y research. My only complaint/request is that the developers add the capability to annotate PDFs by handwriting using Apple Pencil... it’s a huge pain to have to pull up the keyboard to type a note while I’m in the flow of reading!
Terrible annotations of pdf
by JVoisa on 2019/12/02 18:24
Annotation with Apple Pencil is non-existent, all you can do is highlight. No ability to draw or write on the PDF. Unacceptable for a PDF reader.

This app leads to substantial improvement in my productivity
by wei@vestal on 2019/11/14 14:26
If you are in academia, this app is almost a must-have. The sync feature allows me to read papers on all devices. The citation export feature on the Mac fundamentally changed the way I maintain my bibliography database. Annotations of PDF file are very helpful in keeping notes. The literature search function is handy for adding citations. There are some glitches that should be fixed. Here are a few: 1. The side pane refuses to go away on the iPad when you try to swipe it away. If I change the orientation, this functionality resumes. 2. The screen flickers sometimes, most noticeably on the Mac. 3. The title of an article sometimes mismatches with the actual PDF file. Re-opening of the app seems to fix it.
Useless

Need to add Apple Pencil feature!
by hupusucks on 2019/11/08 14:14
Among all the scientific citing apps, I stayed with Mendeley. But it’s been frustrating that I can not annotate and take notes with my Apple Pencil. By the way, you can do that with Acrobat. I don’t want to change between apps, which is bad for me to keep record of my reading. Deer developers, please try harder to bring us the feature! I will really appreciate that.
iOS client notably buggier
by PharaohSparrow on 2019/11/07 02:21
UI issues with sidebar refusing to close ought to be fixed. Is there am automatic dedupe? Papers that are not duplicated on desktop clients are duplicated one or more times when synced to the iPad. Come on Elsevier you can afford a few good developers. This should not be so shoddy.

Keeps getting worse - and worse - and worse...
by MAFinOKC on 2019/10/30 21:08
I don’t know who does the IT for Mendeley, but they must be using the lowest bidder. All of the clients keep getting worse, including the Windows and Linux desktop clients; but this is about the iPad app. When it’s not simply frozen, it is slowed to a crawl perpetually syncing, retrieving documents, pushing notices, or just nonspecifically spinning its wheels. When you tap on a document to expand it to full screen, it immediately pops back to the smaller size; this happens over and over. If the app were at least gradually improving, I’d just put up with it. But it isn’t getting better, it’s getting slowly but surely worse. I am getting very close to looking for another program, which I don’t do lightly, because both Zotero and ReadCube leave quite a bit to be desired. But better a product that doesn’t work too well than one that doesn’t work at all.
Embarrassingly bad
by llanbnr mmskhd on 2019/10/29 20:56
Immediately froze. UI like it belongs on an iPhone 3.
It does not even suffice as a PDF reader
by Lin Lee Chun on 2019/10/24 21:50
Mendeley helps me save much time on organizing research papers and files. I love the service itself however not this mobile version... All I need is simply a portable PDF reader that can let me read papers on the go. I choose Mendely app because it is painful to manage PDF files around when using a 3rd party tool. But this app hardly works and always has some weird bugs when I need it. For example, recently the app asked me to log in again due to the expired session. After logging in I found all the paper entries were duplicated for some reason. Moreover, when opening a file, I could not close the side panel to enter the fullscreen mode. If there’s anyway to report the bug I’m willing to do so. Hope we will see a better version soon...

by budzyn9 on 2019/10/22 15:42
Dear Mendeley, I appreciate your desktop product and I will easily tell you that if it wasn’t for your product, I would not finish graduate school. The current iOS version of this product is disappointing. More people will be moving away from laptops now that the iPad iOS 13 can do virtually anything a laptop can and more. I share this with you because this is an opportunity to corner the market in tablet readers/citations. I sincerely hope that you consider investing in this upgrade, as I would be the first to download and use it. As of right now, however, I am unable to access Mendeley with my iPad, which has forced me to move my files to a competitor. Respectfully, Matt
Used to be great, now usuably buggy
by tbenst on 2019/10/16 15:52

Is this app finished?
by hiaoxui on 2019/10/04 22:16
It contains too many bugs, some of them make it almost unusable. Every time I add a new folder in my desktop, iOS app will crash, and I have to reinstall this app with all data cleared. Every time I switch to another app and switch back, the highlight will be darkened. And apple pencil will stop working unexpectedly. For God's sake, please pay more money to your programmer and try to fix the bugs, ok?

by Mr noital on 2019/09/29 19:21
I use Mendeley in every capacity of my academic workflow (Chrome importer, LaTeX .bib exports, Overleaf integration, annotation, and reading). Though I understand that not many people were happy with the layout or stability of the iOS apps, at least they worked in iOS 12. Now, the app will not even start without crashing (starting the app loads the logo then closes abruptly). I beg the developers to please update the apps to at least functional levels for iOS 13, iPhone and iPad. iOS 13 was not a surprise to any other app developer, as Apple provided the resources to update apps long before the public OS launch. Elsevier, please give your developers the money and time to develop functional apps if you plan on advertising them for these platforms. If you are discontinuing the apps, then just do so and update your marketing. It is simply unprofessional and frankly embarrassing of an ordinarily esteemed and prestigious organization.

Love it for Browser, Not Good for App

I just was introduced to Mendeley through my university librarian, and I love it for organizing my articles! I tried to log in through the iPad app after creating my account on my desktop, but it will not recognize my university credentials on the app. Since I cannot log in, I do not this this app is good. It is too bad since I prefer reading things on my iPad.

Still committed, but frustrated.
by Jacob R. Campbell on 2019/09/26 17:01
I like Mendeley. Haven’t found a PDF organizer that meets my academic needs better yet... but right now I can’t use it on my iOS devices... which is where I live and do most of my work. It just crashes on launch. I’m left sending it to my laptop and then reading / reviewing though another app on my iPad. I reached out to support... and they said an update is coming... and I know app review takes a bit... but so frustrating (some is my fault and I’ve been living on the betas for a while... and had no expectation that it be fixed for because I was on the beta, but it is released now). If I could encourage the developer... I hope that you could take a your iOS version and make it the best, because to me it’s the best place to read and review my journal articles. I’m assuming shortly there will be an update to fix the crash on launch... but what I want is for them to also take on new cool features of iOS (dark mode, Siri shortcut support, editing in other apps... etc). I’ll be ok if just opens, but I want you to be taking it further as this is my platform of choice.
Major Flaw - PDFs are not readable in the APP
by Dasaed on 2019/02/22 01:21
Mendeley desktop is super useful, mendeley mobile app is virtually useless. I use mendeley to not only save my sources and citations, but also to view my PDFs and write notes on the PDFs for future reference, but all that functionality with the PDFs is not present in the app. The PDFs I download into my computer are not available in the app. I see the source, but I’m unable to read the content of it, making this ipad close to useless. The only solution I have found to be able to open my PDFs, is to do this first on a computer: Open the PDF in Chrome, select the print option, save it as a PDF somewhere else on you computer(this sort of gets rid off the original PDFs metadata related to authors, sources, etc.), and then import that other PDF into the Mendeley App. Since some important metadata will be missing, you will have to manually correct the title, add the authors, publication, date. But at least this way, when you sync your account, you will be able to find your PDFs on the ipad.
Lots of potential, but recently too buggy to use
by Dude_imchris on 2018/12/13 02:27
I’ve used this app for the last year, and it had been a great way to read academic papers while on the go, allowing me to highlight text, leave comments, and then sync it back to the desktop app. It always seemed a bit slow, but functional, until about a month ago. Since then, it has really struggled to refresh, sync, and download PDFs. It has crashed multiple times recently, just trying to scroll through a PDF. This app can be extremely useful, but it really needs to be updated. I love the ability to easily access my mendeley library and keep everything synced, but the app’s recent issues have made it almost useless. Please fix all these bugs! I’m looking for other options but haven’t yet found anything as seamless to sync between mobile and desktop. I’m keeping my fingers crossed that things improve soon!

Real fantastic piece of Software
by Paulo Cunha on 2017/11/02 14:24
Mendeley is just a fantastic software which helped me immensely in my academic life. It has saved me from a huge amount of work by helping organise books and article references, as well as its PDF files. The feature of automatic referencing in several international references standards do also help me being more productive and concentrate my energy in thinking and writing than in managing the chaos of files and folders in a file system of any computer. And there is the cloud availability, and free space in this cloud, and synchronisation...it is a must have for academic life at any level.
Great for collecting the journal articles I read
by RefluxNY on 2018/10/03 10:39
Whether I want to keep articles I am reading or save articles for reading later, this is the best app for my library. I create folders for my favorite topics. I save the article for reference using the share button on iPhone or the extension button on chrome. Any references of interestin the bibliography of are saved as well for later reading. Mendeley will also give me a feed of similar articles. This is truly well honed for someone who needs the references and the actual articles close at hand for both my reading and writing.
Was great, but now they hold your data hostage
by dustininsf on 2019/03/18 04:29
Recent changes to the Mendeley app include encrypting your database of research files, including all of your annotations and metadata. Mendeley claims this is to protect us and is part of GDPR, however, a key provision of that law is allowing for data portability - the ability to get your data out of this app that allows you to switch to a different tool is crucial. If you use the Mendeley auto-backup feature for your database, I’d suggest navigating to it on your Mac/Win computer (do a search to find the directory path). Then make a backup copy of your Mendeley database folder and the previous versions that are saved - ideally put this on an external drive. Even if you continue using Mendeley, having an unencrypted copy of your library will give you more flexibility to recover your data if needed.
I don’t see what all the fuss is about, the app works well.
by Cee-Delta_Conductor on 2019/07/14 21:35
First thing is first: this is not a citation manager, it is a document reader and organizer. It is designed to interface with the Mendeley desktop manager. In short, this app is for consumption, not for production. All of my articles sync between my computer and my iPad. I am able to read and annotate the documents. I am able to organize and share documents with my collaborators. If you think that it is a good idea to write a scholarly paper on an iPad, this is not a good application for you (but you’ve already made a huge mistake). If you want to use your iPad for what it was designed for, *consuming* information, then the Mendeley app is an excellent addition to your work flow. My only gripe is that when moving files, an error message appears. The files move after syncing despite the error, but the message is misleading and can lead to duplicated instances of documents.
One of the best
by Tomcat blue on 2018/12/03 05:39
This is one of the best reference apps I have used. It has all the basic features such as reference matching, notes, highlight, cloud storage and more. But what I really, really like is that the app is stable, the sync with the cloud seems to always work and the search feature is great. The only thing I wish they would enhance is the zoom on the reading mode. You can only zoom in so far and it isn’t quite at a resolution that I’m completely comfortable with. However that is a small price to pay for getting all the other great features.
Needed features
by Sherif al-Qallawi on 2019/05/13 15:45
1. I like the app very much, but one of the features that I think need to be added is to show a summary of the annotations either in the meta data section below notes (e.g., Page 12: Highlighted "one important finding of this paper is x") or as a button in the document reading mode that shows only the pages in the document that contain annotations. 2. The ability to add/upload files from ipad inside folders. 3. To be able to search for articles in my library that have 2 or more specific tags added by me.
Great app but needs better keyboard functionality
by DavidHammett on 2018/05/03 01:44
I use this app a lot, but one feature that needs to be added is some way to scroll down the page using a keyboard on iPad. There appears to only be the option to scroll down an entire page with both up/left and down/right arrows. It would be great if it could be changed to left/right being full page scroll and for down/up to scroll bit by bit down the page. Add this and it’s an easy five star app for me.
Buggy piece of garbage
by csr0000000099999 on 2019/07/01 02:23
Elsevier. I paid a premium for a yearlong subscription to your storage space and although all of my papers are synced there, I am unable to access them on your iOS app. My assessment: it’s a complete rip off. I already review papers for your journals for free. And pay page charges when I publish in them. And the library at my institution pays for access to your journals. Now this with the highway robbery — -$300 for one year’s access to a service that does not even work as advertised. No wonder your profit margins are so high. A reckoning is coming. The more you stoke the outrage with these practices the quicker it will come. I for one vow to stop reviewing for you. And to stop publishing in your journals. And I know I am not the only one.
I love it
by somehume on 2020/02/11 20:18
I’ve been using this consistently for two semesters and had used it previously before taking a break in my program.
Almost there, needs a few more features
by ARWS_Ed.D. on 2019/09/08 18:01
Three stars for being free and cloud based. I like the integration with pencil for highlighting. However, being able to hand write on a pdf is an essential for learning. This being a tool for researchers, the developer should take into consideration the research showing had written notes are better for learning versus typing out notes. Thank you for not requiring paid subscription, but I would pay a one time fee for a feature allowing for handwritten notes or syncing with companion apps like notability.
I love this app
by KatyaR2019 on 2019/01/30 03:26
Alongside with being able to organize all my files, I am able to leave notes anywhere in the text and actually pull up a definition of any word by just tapping on it! I am learning English and it is amazing to be able to look up a word without leaving the book and going to a translator app. It even offers translation to Russian!!! Really helps me enjoy reading. I wish it would work a little faster though.
Works as expected
by Gockley family on 2018/08/30 11:17
This app delivers on the promise of research article collection, editing, and portability. It synced up 400 articles from my hard drive, got the notes and highlights right, as we'll as the tags. It can read full screen and rotate, and you can highlight on the fly. It seems really solid. Steady improvements over the years (pdf editing), though always room to grow (iOS clipping). Thanks!
Nice app, but missing critical functionality
by TroyJenL on 2019/02/16 21:09
It is great for its sole purpose of importing actual files on an iOS device. Falls completely short of the overall need in a mobile reference management system. You cannot import webpages (which seems like the primary task you are likely to do on an iOS device). You also cannot generate a citation to copy and paste into an iOS document (also seems like the majority of the reason to have this kind of tool). Please add these super simple features that are critical to using Mendeley on an iPad.
Almost has everything I need
by jagdap on 2019/12/03 12:26
Besides some minor glitches when syncing with the cloud, this has been a great way to track and annotate articles for ,y research. My only complaint/request is that the developers add the capability to annotate PDFs by handwriting using Apple Pencil... it’s a huge pain to have to pull up the keyboard to type a note while I’m in the flow of reading!
PDF syncing is not consistent!
by vincelee12 on 2019/03/12 01:37
I got this app to read papers and sources while not at my laptop. The only problem is... PDFs imported through Mendeley Desktop won’t download or sync to this app! It’s pretty pointless if I can only view the citation for the paper and not the actual document. There are workarounds, such as importing the document through the mobile app itself, but existing highlights and notes that were made on the desktop app won’t transfer. Sadly support isn’t very helpful, as it seems this is a bug in the app itself and not some feature I’m neglecting to turn on.
Can’t add PDFs for some papers
by hfjrjtj on 2019/07/25 20:54
I already used Mendeley desktop as a reference manager/paper reading/note-taking app so I got this for my iPad for reading papers. When it works it’s pretty good but it does not work consistently. Some papers have PDFs already available to download, some allow you to add PDFs to an existing reference, some don’t let you add one at all. Sometimes highlighting will just not work on one page but it does on the next. I just wish it were reliable, because when it does work it’s my favorite way to read papers.
It's okay
by Pamrov02 on 2019/03/21 14:57
I've used Mendeley for a couple of years now, and it's pretty good compared to some other reference managers out there, but it's buggy and could be more user-friendly. 1. Fix the MS Word plugin 2. Allow the ability to add PDF's without having to download them as a print version, lots of metadata is lost or incorrectly saved that way. 3. Allow the ability to mark papers as unread. 4. Allow a drawing and lasso select ability. 5. Allow users to edit the opacity of highlight colors. It's pretty good for other science reference managers out there, but could do better. The ability to connect with the Researcher app is great! Would be even better if you could save your bookmarked papers from researcher in specific folders in Mendeley and mark as unread.
Performance is declining
by 77camc on 2018/11/27 15:53
Mendeley has been my go-to as a reference manager. I gravitated toward it because of its ap for IOS. I like to access papers while on my iPhone. But over the past year, the ap has been buggy to say the least. At the moment, the ap does not open cleanly. When I open it, I see my folders, but it simply stalls as if loading something or syncing. It never actually finishes whatever it seems to be doing with the end result being I can’t use the ap now. Am looking for alternatives but I’d prefer they fix whatever is the problem.
Extreme lag please update
by starliteparade on 2019/02/19 09:29
The performance of the mobile app is terrible. I've been stuck on loading screens and in the middle of typing out folder names or just trying to read documents. I haven't been able to do anything on my phone for the past week without the app freezing for within a minute or two. I'm only giving this another star is because this app is more useful when its synced all my notes and bookmarks to my desktop or browser
Could be better for citations
by ssssssaaaaaasssss on 2019/02/02 22:18
I enjoy this app greatly, and it has really changed the way I manage articles and create citation. The citation creator does need to be updated for the newest APA version. The way the DOI and ISSN are formatted into the citation is incorrect, as well as the book style citation not including a state after the city. With these small tweaks, it would be perfect.
Double highlighting and notes
by BROwithsickFLO on 2019/06/21 00:52
App works moderately well, some sync issues which go away after a minute or two of staring at the screen. What is unforgiving is the double and triple highlighting and note taking that occurs (duplicate and triplicate highlights and notes). I would love this app if that problem was solved in iOS/iPadOS. I don't have the problem of the app creating multiple annotations on my windows desktop. Must be an iOS bug the devs haven't had pointed out or are ignoring!
Great app with room for improvement
by albuha on 2018/08/26 03:30
I like this app but I would really love for the following features to be added in for pdf annotation: - option to change highlighter color - undo button The ability to add handwritten notes on the pdf page, which was suggested by someone else, would also be nice. I did notice that sending a document to Mendeley from chrome does not work, and while that’s an inconvenience, it’s not a huge problem for me, because I use this app primarily for annotating PDFs with iPad/Apple Pencil. Plus you can still download and import the pdf document manually anyway.
Haven’t yet been able to use the app
by shan.t.m on 2019/06/04 17:23
This app was my main reason to attempt transferring my library from Zotero to Mendeley. Sadly, the app simply cannot sync with my library (even after limiting my import to the essential documents for my active projects). I just want to read journal articles from my tablet and store the files in a way that’s synced with my desktop and laptop. So far it’s looking like I’ll need to find another solution
PDFs not available for download
by Frtgvcd on 2017/09/10 22:31
Spent a whole day adding and uploading my pdf literature library to my Mendeley library. Installed this app and signed in and only a handful of random papers were available for download. Went back to my desktop Mendeley library to find all the pdf uploads were missing. Not sure how they all got removed, but perhaps from syncing with my iOS Mendeley app. Very frustrated with this at the moment, thinking I should just stick with organizing my pdf lit library manually.
Lacking
by jasgaravito on 2020/02/28 01:59
Its time they update the graphic interface, and the app itself so that it stays competent in today’s mobile world. Specially for iPads which are continuously taking traditional desktop tasks. I think that the integration as a plugin with Microsoft Word would be difficult on iOS, but at least enable an option to copy any reference in the selected format to the clipboard. This app, as it is, seems about 5-7 years behind.
The app works great
by Antonio Max on 2018/05/22 18:55
It syncs, I can download only the papers I’m interested on reading in my iPad and my highlights are all there, it’s flawless. The only missing feature in Mendeley is to list highlights the same way it lists notes, other than this, it’s perfect.
Need to fix PDF sync issues
by Nancy Nematode on 2019/03/18 02:51
I’ve lately experienced the same issue as others: PDFs that show up in my web library never sync on the mobile app. I’ve left it syncing for hours waiting in vain for five PDFs to show up. This app used to be my preferred way to read papers, but right now it’s not worth the hassle and I’m stuck staring endlessly at my laptop. I hope this bug is fixed soon.

Getting frustrated and no longer recommending
by reno drew on 2020/10/27 03:45
Just had the Mendeley app freeze up again for I pad. I still love it for writing, organizing but the I pad app is pretty bad right now. Please fix!
Function of drawing would be helpful for further improvement
by roga2020 on 2020/10/23 00:51
It’s good to read, but it would be better if I could keep draw in the file or I could add files to existing literature.
Please add sketching option

I am using an iPad Pro 10.5” w/iOS 13.6.1.

iPad App does not sync docs
by Eymerich71 on 2020/06/11 16:52
I have used MENDELEY for years, despite many frustrations, but the fact that I cannot sync the pdf on the iPad is making the whole experience even worst.

I’d bump up to 5 stars if the interface got cleaned up a bit, but again... it works fine.

by itbeTiffany on 2020/01/14 01:48
It is very easy to download, read, highlight, scroll, bounce from page to page, section to section, etc.

My only complaint/request is that the developers add the capability to annotate PDFs by handwriting using Apple Pencil... it’s a huge pain to have to pull up the keyboard to type a note while I’m in the flow of reading!

by wei@vestal on 2019/11/14 14:26
If you are in academia, this app is almost a must-have.

Used to be great, now usuably buggy
by tbenst on 2019/10/16 15:52
Crashes are frequent as are freezes. I have to restart the app about once per minute (sample size: 5 minutes of use & 5 restarts). To open a pdf, I have to time the GUI glitches so I could press the right location. Nearly unusable
Love Mendeley, hate the iOS app

by TJ Byun on 2019/10/07 18:21
What a failure. The app crashes every minute, annotations get duplicated, the pane never closes, and the ipad gets super hot consuming all the juice in the meantime. What have you done to the code?
Is this app finished?
by hiaoxui on 2019/10/04 22:16
It contains too many bugs, some of them make it almost unusable. Every time I add a new folder in my desktop, iOS app will crash, and I have to reinstall this app with all data cleared. Every time I switch to another app and switch back, the highlight will be darkened. And apple pencil will stop working unexpectedly. For God's sake, please pay more money to your programmer and try to fix the bugs, ok?

The iPadOS and iOS13 bug fix finally arrived - sad it didn’t come sooner but glad it is here now because I was frustrated at the prospect of having to find a different mobile reference manager. It’s a relief to keep using Mendeley.

Please fix for iOS 13
by Mr noital on 2019/09/29 19:21
I use Mendeley in every capacity of my academic workflow (Chrome importer, LaTeX .bib exports, Overleaf integration, annotation, and reading).

Lacking
by jasgaravito on 2020/02/28 01:59
Its time they update the graphic interface, and the app itself so that it stays competent in today’s mobile world. Specially for iPads which are continuously taking traditional desktop tasks. I think that the integration as a plugin with Microsoft Word would be difficult on iOS, but at least enable an option to copy any reference in the selected format to the clipboard. This app, as it is, seems about 5-7 years behind.
