Get Another App
by bryanjkirk on 2021/01/22 16:59
I have tried Penultimate about 6 times. The integration with Evernote is its only redeeming feature, and that takes finagling to make work with multiple notebooks. The UI is difficult to work with when actually taking notes. The buttons to scroll-to-page are right under your hand as your writing, which means you tap them all the time. Often you write the same stroke 3-4 times before the app recognizes it. It seems like the app was built by developers who never actually use real notebooks.
Penultimate +iPad Pro +plus iPencil +Evernote
by 100bdg on 2021/01/17 14:24
I have been using this combination for about 4 years. It does everything that I needed to do. I am sure that I am not using it to its fullest potential as I use it for a personal notebook and sketch pad but rarely share or collaborate with others. It has worked flawlessly for me in that job. I have always been a note taker. With this combination notetaking is easy, it’s fast and I can always find every note even from years ago. Penultimate is the best application for creating a combination to do, I did, I shouldn’t have done, why did I do that, and did I really do that list. And for better or worse it is all in written down for you to reflect on.
Love this buggy app
by Michael03222 on 2021/01/16 14:50
This app has the bones of a really good app but it has so many bugs. I use it every day in business and for my journaling, and I have found ways to work around the problems, but there are a lot. The app has potential and I hope they add some features like changing paper from page to page, or embedding urls into the docs, etc. The documentation also needs a lot of help - a number of features and capabilities are never explained.
Great but still needs progress
by TheChrisSancho on 2020/12/27 11:24
I’ve been using this app for a while now and it certainly proves itself to be a pretty great notetaking app for multiple purposes However, there are some quality of life things still missing with this app which ruin a lot of the enjoyable experience by adding some level of frustration Such things include not being able to move notes from one notebook to another, glitch where you cannot name a new notebook by the same name of an already deleted notebook, with the Logitech Digital Crayon there seems to be some confusion with how the highlighter will be angled, no edits can be made to default note names, can’t change the color of notebooks, selecting certain parts of a piece of writing will from time to time leave little dots of pencil that didn’t move alongside the selection, and a lack of a default paper style.
There is NO WAY this is a “popular” app
by Caddisbug1994 on 2020/12/27 03:32
This app is horrible.
Great App With Few, Minor Flaws
by Connorandrei on 2020/12/27 03:10
I hemmed and hawed between 4 and 5 stars. Ultimately, I just use this app so often and have so few issues with it that I had to go with 5 stars. Organization is definitely best done in browser rather than in app. The browser functionality allows you to more easily move notes from one notebook to another. That was a game changer. I do also wish you could share a page as a pdf out of one of the notebooks. If this is possible, I haven’t figured out how to do it yet. Someone please tell me. Other than that, I find this to be a ludicrously easy to use, simple note taking app. I’ve got it organized to a great point where I just have all my notes easily accessible and ready to use. I’ve only used this app with my Apple Pencil, so I don’t know how good or bad it is without a pencil or other stylus
Stuck
by Mike ni on 2020/12/21 23:38
App won’t get passed loading screen, it’s stuck
Evernote messed it up
by Rick4303 on 2020/12/19 18:57
Penultimate seemed like a decent app and Evernote as well but then Evernote started messing around with subscriptions and limiting services and access and it just wasn’t worth it anymore. Somehow they thought they had gotten big enough that they could do what they wanted and customers would just take being screwed over. Wrong!
Evernote has destroyed this app
by Vince1658 on 2020/12/13 08:45
It was a great app that I used everyday in school. Then Evernote bought it and then destroyed it. It became buggier and buggier overtime, just like evernote.
Very good

I love this app please don’t change anything
Seems abandoned.
by reedberrett on 2020/11/25 02:07
Features stop working and there is “no comment”. I suspect I am just accumulating a huge pile of journals that will need to be tediously transferred to another program and lack consistency with new files. very hard to organize, especially for a note taking app. Hand writing has a nice feel and can be very precise. It could be so much more.
The new think pad
by Jl am on 2020/11/08 14:22
I love it because I can write like using pen and paper and I can make correction anytime without using eraser. Integration with Evernote makes it so easy to upload my notes and have everything in one place.

I liked it but some flaws
by kenzie_gacha on 2020/10/26 03:36
It’s a very good app but when I wrote the line would just go other places and it made my handwriting look messy but other than that it was a good app! Would recommend!!
Great app but...
by Chrickie on 2020/10/13 14:44
I love this app and I LOVE taking notes with my iPad Pro, the most frustrating thing is not being able to move and organize notes in other folders AFTER you have written a note. Aside from that I really enjoy the experience of using this.
Love it, but could be improved
by Tag_ur_it on 2020/10/10 16:37
I’ve been using this app since 2017. I love it. I’ve always preferred handwritten notes and this app allowed me the freedom to minimize my physical notebook collection. There are improvements that could be made, as other reviewers have mentioned. It would be nice if it were easier to reorganize notes (i.e. moving notes between notebooks). I won’t reiterate the suggestions others have made. That is my one suggestion.
Overall not bad but some annoying features
by Marcus Brown12345 on 2020/10/06 22:23
It’s good overall but the blue pen color should be lighter because it’s hard to tell the difference between that and black. You should also be able to pinch zoom instead of that scroll and write feature popping up. Lastly, if you could drag and reorganize your folders and notes, this app would be much better.
Notability Is WAY Better
by Neatguy64 on 2020/09/29 20:27
I love Evernote. I have been a Plus members for almost 3 years. I want to utilize the seamless integration between Evernote and Penultimate. But I cannot. Penultimate is too clunky and painful to use, especially in comparison to Notability. Here’s what makes Notability so much better: 1. Zooming-in feature. Penultimate has a clunky magnifying glass that moves when you write. Notability allows you to zoom-in simply by performing a pinch gesture on the screen. This may not seem like much, but I will NEVER use Penultimate until there’s a pinch-to-zoom gesture. Not only is it way easier and more intuitive to use, but it LITERALLY adds a new dimension to your notes. It is why I prefer writing with my iPad over pencil and paper. It enables you to make much better use of horizontal and vertical space and creates a 2D feel to your notes. PLEASE add this to Penultimate. 2. Palm recognition. Penultimate does a poor job at this mostly because it tries to predict whether you are going to write with your finger or an apple pencil. Notability doesn’t have this issue. 3. Highlighter. Penultimate’s highlighter isn’t pressure sensitive. Notability’s highlighter doesn’t have this issue and works better overall. 4. Features. Notability just has more features than Penultimate does. To name a few, Notability has an object eraser, dark mode, text boxes, audio recordings, image snapping, image cropping, and note sorting. Notability has all these features and is still simple and intuitive to use. There’s likely way more issues with Penultimate that I haven’t discovered, since it did not take me long to give up on Penultimate and switch to Notability. So please fix the above issues. I want to be able to use Penultimate. It has so much potential.
Love it w Evernote!!
by FrannaA on 2020/09/16 22:04
Love to hand write my notes with my iPad and then seeing them on MacBook ❤️👍🏻👏🏻👏🏻
Overall pretty good
by 60036831000 on 2020/09/08 17:50
This has been everything I’ve needed for taking notes and planning things (I’m a college student and writer) my only complaint is that I can’t sort my notes into different notebooks if I took them in the wrong place or realized they should be further organized.
Abandoned Product
by local_fan on 2020/09/02 11:29
This software was created by Evernote, which I’ve used for nearly 10 years. Penultimate has great features, the auto-sync to Evernote and ‘export as PDF to wherever you wish, to name a couple. It feels as if it’s now abandoned, glitches we expected to be addressed still remain after many years, and potential great new features never added. If Evernote paid a little bit of attention to this product they can make it excellent again.
Could improve the way notes are organized
by Earri on 2020/09/01 17:21
I like using this app, excellent quality, many different background papers. Unfortunately there is no flexibility in arranging notes. One cannot sort them by title and alphabetic order, making it hard to find notes after a while, nor is it possible to move a note from one notebook to another.
Great tool with poor zoom
by bnyban on 2020/08/30 15:31
Useful tool and is quite a nice paradigm. has some nice features such as choice of paper type etc, but I wish it could zoom, have a canvas that can extend side to side as well, and color choice transparency. Also, the ability to draw straight lines such as the straight edge in Mac notes would be a big plus.
Phone log
by mediabaron on 2020/08/24 17:28
FINALLY A way to archive and search not only my phone log but by keeping iPad on my desk instead of a pad to scribble on, even quick notes are saved and searchable on evernote
Great for musicians

Great for handwriting sheet music and music scribbles. As a musician, I use it every day.

Good until you get a new device
by Aienator on 2020/08/13 00:59
Every time I have changed IPads I have major syncing issues to the point I lose a significant number of notes each time (2 changes). Paying for premium doesn’t seem to help and my most recent change now won’t keep synced and allow me to view notes offline. Probably better for school type notes than serious professional use. Tech support has been no help, and Iquote, “it should be working”. Thanks
Simple and very useful app
by Shark #11 on 2020/08/11 16:36
Penultimate, used in conjunction with the iPad Pro and Apple Pencil is a simple way to paperless with all of your note taking. I’ve been using this daily for all of my work and personal notes for the past few years and I love it! It is easy to organize your notes and they all get saved in Evernote for further organization and archiving.
No way to drag and drop text onto other apps
by TonyH1982 on 2020/08/05 01:45
Pretty decent but other apps allow you to select your handwritten notes, and drag and drop them onto other apps (such as Evernote) and instantly convert the notes into actual text. This should already be built in, especially for collaboration work with Evernote.
Unexpected crash
by sophiebeanzee on 2020/07/24 03:16
Hello idk if you read the reviews for these or not, but just a heads up, the app just all of a sudden as of today started to unexpectedly crash and this happened right after I moved a note file from one of my Evernote folders (on the iPad) into the penultimate folder and idk if it’s got something to do with the app or if it’s my iPad in general but the syncing is an issue. Otherwise I absolutely love the app! If you need any furrther infopleas feel free to ask
Good for journaling, but could be improved
by Troyandreasen on 2020/07/07 17:40
I love the way the handwriting is analyzed for text and synced with Evernote. The two improvements that would make this app a 5 would be: 1) the ability to insert text boxes, and 2) custom colors for writing/sketching.
Love this app, just a few flaws
by ygentaf on 2020/07/05 21:24
It’s perfect, except sometimes it doesn’t recognize when I am long pressing to input an image into my notes; a separate button for adding images could make it easier. The search notes function also does not work at all.. it seems to give me absolutely random results each time I use it
Good
by Worthless1o1 on 2020/06/21 19:59
It’s good
Using for years
by Regina King on 2020/06/14 21:26
The only consistent thing in my life is this app. Not cluttered, not over saturated enough manipulation with pages and writing to get the most out of it. Would highly recommend.
Not easy to move notes to computer file
by JLSDE1 on 2020/06/04 22:02
If you want to use it to write notes and then store on your computer for later reference it takes many steps. This was not the case when I started in 2013. When Evernote took over you were never able to e-mail the Notebook only every section in the note book. If you try to open notes from the web you can only view your notes.
Evernote sync should work better
by Prime 2 3 5 7 on 2020/05/31 08:59
It syncs the document until you go back to the notebook view. Should sync all the time, or have at least option or manual way to do it.
Need more refinement
by Yiding Cao on 2020/05/26 06:27
After all this time it finally updated, but it does need more refinement. The writing looks fantastic in it, actually better than any other writing or note taking apps, but what about Apple Pencil support? And maybe some multi gesture support as well? Please put some effort into this app, as it would be a very good companion to Evernote. please update more regularly!
Penultimate has become a laggy non-responsive app
by CG5189 on 2020/05/14 19:36
What used to be a great app has become laggy, non-responsive and irritating to use. My preference is now to look for a piece of paper and pen:
Great, but...

Love this app but could use more
by XxReallyHappyxX on 2020/05/09 01:53
I love this app and I am only 10 years old! I do say if we have more than 12 choice of colors so far This app is like goodnotes but it can be better like chose our pen settings like in Goodnotes like 4.5 mil meter or something. Also maybe the zoom in feature can it be more like um Goodnote where you press a box and the zoom in feature works cause when I do it works good but it leave pen marks on it and if I want to easer it it won’t let me. But so far this app is GOOD! I wasn’t able it find any note taking app for free but if I did some of then didn’t work very well so I chose this one! Also can you fix the highlighter it is TERRIBLE I want to make it look aesthetic as possible like people on YouTube do with their goodnotes app! And anyways if it’s sounds mean I am SO SO sorry I am not trying to look mean but this app could become the new goodnotes but for free!
GET THIS! YOU WONT REGRET IT!
by maddiemoots on 2020/04/30 00:48
i love this app sooooo much. i whole heartedly recommend you getting this. i have downloaded about 5 or 6 notes apps and none of them worked the way this one does. tbh i didnt have high hopes for this. i needed a note app to takes notes for school. i thought it was just going to be one of those note taking apps that dont work well. I WAS WRONG. this is the best quality and writes sooooo smoothly. i have a stylus that can sometimes get a little shaky, but with this app you cant tell LITERALLY AT ALL. i just wanna say GET THIS APP! YOU WONT REGRET IT! and you will be completely satisfied with everything. thank you sooooooo much for making this!!! ❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️
Acceptable but could be better.
by andyjeff1 on 2020/04/21 19:56
It would be good if it could import a greater variety of documents. It syncs with Evernote which is but not sure if it is the most important thing.
So close to awesome yet so far away....
by Tokyo Tammy Lynn on 2020/04/15 14:33
Pros - The responsiveness is FANTASTIC compared to other note taking apps. I like the knife feature to move bits around rather than recreate. I LOVE that it can pop into Evernote. Cons - There is a severe lack of filing / organization capabilities. Even the note app has folders and sub folders. Number of color selection is ridiculously low... need the link to color selection palette Pen thickness jumps from 2-5 with huge difference... Needs a 3-3.5 equivalent. So many useless paper types and few with functional needs. Thin line is not thin.. sp number of lines per page too Snap non-existent - NEED for shape drawing or section separation. Preset shapes to choose would be major plus. Highlighters... All but yellow and maybe red are too dark on first pass. Second pass too dark on all. Have diff shades.... second pass to get areas missed stay same color. This would be HUGE plus for students annotation. Insert - photos ok but proportion should be optional. NEED PDF INSERT CAPABILITIES WITH ANNOTATION..... THAT WOULD BE A GAMECHANGER FOR MANY MANY PURPOSES
Issues with scrolling
by Fv-user on 2020/04/14 04:19
It is beyond annoying to scroll from top of page to bottom in landscape (pages are always portrait). There should be a setting for people with the pencil to select so that only the pencil can write to prevent accidental touches
Works but a couple annoying features
by Billy76856 on 2020/04/09 17:05
I use this app every morning for journaling and note taking for 4 months now. As a whole The app works pretty well, especially with the Apple Pen. There are a couple very annoying features though that brought me to write this review. 1. When I pop between apps by swiping up in the iPad (like readings I am going through), when I come back to this app it will sometimes put me back 2-3 pages in my notes from where I left off. This happens about 60% of the time and really gets annoying when you have to keep popping back and forth. 2. You can’t rearrange anything for better organization. Or at least I haven’t found a way and have looked for a long while. What I mean is, you can create folders to house similar documents but you can’t rearrange the order of the folders so that the most commonly used or similar topics would be grouped by each other. They just become scattered without any rhyme or reason. Also heaven forbid you spend an hour taking notes on something in the wrong folder/location, which I have done a couple times now. And that is unfortunately now where those documents live. There is no way of moving it to the correct folder, which in my opinion is almost a deal breaker for a note taking app. If this is possible it is not easily found in the app.
Great but could use some work
by notetaker264 on 2020/04/09 01:44
I love using this app and use it daily but I encounter many glitches. Like I will see random dots and markings that I cannot erase away. Maneuvering pictures can also be a hassle sometimes
Needs an update
by Cashstacker on 2020/04/07 18:32
I think Evernote has abandoned Penultimate. This is a great app, BUT needs some tweaks. A. The Apple pencil double tap doesn't work. B. There is no way to infinitely adjust the line weights, it only has presets. C. There needs to be away to adjust/turn off the pressure sensitivity. If you have a "heavy hand" the line weight changes significantly. Maybe the app works great with the jot stylus, but every day I look for a replacement for Penultimate, because I use the Apple Pencil. I simply want an app that allows me to control the Apple Pencil behavior, and seamlessly syncs my writing into evernote. I've tried Apple notes, concepts, and some of the notetaking apps, but can't match the paper layout and syncing. So, I sacrifice the Apple Pencil behavior to get the other benefits.

Poor app and poor company
by Skyviper20 on 2020/03/25 00:35
This app was great and had very little flaws when it was released in 2010. The company was sold to Evernote in 2014 and they did a bate a switch on the customers in 2015. The app that people purchased wasn’t even close to the same app after a so called “update” was pushed. Today the app is a substandard version of the 2015 version. It has memory leaks, errors when copy or moves are performed. The people running this company are the reason I won’t spend money on apps any more. If you don’t already own this app, you should not purchase it. You can easily find a better writing app.
Add this for 5 stars!
by Kristi9962 on 2020/03/19 08:52
This is my go- to app for writing with my Apple Pencil- I just have 1 wish. A calendar template would be awesome!
Still leaves artifacts on cut and drag
by Simdude on 2020/02/18 02:24
Draw in the program. Use the cut tool to select. Drag to a new location. Little bits of the old drawing are left behind. Copy the same section and repeat. More bits left behind. It doesn’t take long to leave a mess. This program would barely qualify as Alpha software in most companies. For Evernote to release this is pretty bad.
Good but need updating
by scr_james on 2020/02/17 12:58
This is a good software. It was around long before many other writing software came about. It fast and easy to use if you just want to take notes. But since the last update there has been a glitch when copying or moving text, some artifacts would remain. its sad that Evernote has chosen to not update this software.

OCR search can be better but my paper notebooks don’t have that either. Very happy with it. Evernote, Please continue to invest in this product.
Love it but...
by silverhw on 2020/01/25 17:16
I truly love the app for what I use it for, which is journaling. I had been journaling for months just using pages and typing on my iPad, but missed the feel of writing in my journal. The one thing I wish I could do in the app is switch back and forth between typing and writing. Sometimes I have too much to say to hand write it all out!
Potential to be wonderful
by Rafanatic6 on 2020/01/16 10:49
This app is one of the best free ones out there but there are certain basic improvements that really must be made asap: 1. Scrolling is a pain. It’s not smooth, and there are accidental scribbles along the page when you scroll. Why not have options to enable using only the pen for writing purposes? 2. Palm rejection isn’t great. There are always tiny dots where my pal usually is. 3. There’s something wrong with the way the clipping function works. When you select a certain portion of your notes to be moved elsewhere, for some strange reason it leaves behind tiny parts of it on the part where you wrote it. So you have to fill in the missing details and also erase all the bits left behind. God forbid you want to move it only slightly, then the two things overlap and that’s a nightmare.
Powerful and intuitive
by Tomliz76 on 2020/01/13 14:14
Great app for taking notes and keeping things organized. With Evernote integration I’m never without my notes. I wish the notes would stay full size when moving to landscape mode however as I use my iPad in a keyboard case and the note becomes very small. Otherwise, it’s a great app and the price is perfect
Love it!
by JJHinAsia on 2020/01/07 06:12
As soon as I got an Apple Pencil, I looked for a writing app to take notes in. When I saw this was fro, Evernote, I knew it’d be good! I wish the organization was a bit better. I want to move notes from one notebook to the other but don’t see it as an option. Is it in the premium version? If so, I might grab it for that.

Love this app, but there could be improvements
by 123xoxo456 on 2020/01/05 17:15
I really love this app and use it so often, which also reveals limitations. For example, I’d love to be able to copy/paste one (or select) page(s) within a single “book” and paste; I’d then like to paste that page elsewhere in the same book or, perhaps, in a new book that already exists. I’d also like to copy some files into other collections rather than have to reproduce them from scratch. Copying a journal into the same collection helps, but it doesn’t meet all needs, so I spend more time doing work arounds that it gets frustrating. Still, I love the possibilities and what I’ve been able to do.

Frustrating Little Bug
by schramphoto on 2019/12/11 21:26
I’ve used this app for YEARS. It’s the main reason why I’ve kept to iPad all these years. Somewhere along the line, like probably when I started using Apple Pencil, I noticed the most annoying bug. If you don’t start writing IMMEDIATELY, a little box pops up that says PHOTOS|CAMERA. Yes, I get that’s a feature...but it pops up way too quickly. There either needs to be an option to turn this off or they need to add more time before the code to pop this up runs. It would be such a simple fix...I emailed the dev team, hopefully this is something they care about.
It’s ok, but gets more frustrating over time
by /\/\/\:Blondie:/\/\/\ on 2019/12/06 18:56
I’ve used this app with Apple Pencil for 2 semesters now. I like the writing response with the pencil and I use it in conjunction with Evernote. It generally gets the job done. A few major complaints are the color options are very few and don’t really pop, the blue nearly looks black. The highlighter option is also annoying, I wish that passing over an area twice wouldn’t deepen the highlight, it makes quick highlighting in lecture more difficult. Also, the scrolling is annoying and not very responsive so if I need to scroll up to reference past notes and then scroll back down to continue writing, it’s a struggle. The zoom function is also annoying, a regular pinch zoom would be much easier. I may look for another app to use next semester because this app is really getting on my nerves. The whole time I’ve used it, I haven’t seen any major upgrades or attempts to change so maybe I can use another app that still has active development. It just seems like if you spend the money to subscribe, you should get more bang for your buck. Hope this helps.
Very Good

Defiantly a learning curve. Use with iPad which is a great help in making notes as the occasion arises rather than waiting and forgetting.
Fantastic!
by Running-wonder! on 2019/12/04 14:29
I’ve been a Mac user since 1984. Yep, 128k MAC! This app, in my mind, is what Steve Jobs had in mind. When I write, on penultimate, I don’t think about the machine. I just write, process and learn. The fact that Evernote can search every work that I write is perfect. It’s like a Mead Trapper Keeper on steroids! I’m an adjunct college professor, currently working on my MDiv. I write using a Logi pencil on a 6th gen iPad. Thanks for these great tools!
Could be the best
by RLeRoux on 2019/12/01 09:49
The flow of "ink'' is great. But that's it. It could be so much more; it could be the finest handwriting app for an iPad, but it isn't even close. There is no support for the Apple Pencil. Penultimate only offers stylus support for the Jot. There is no way to add or create templates of your own. You cannot natively search written text. I could go on and on. Compare Penultimate to Goodnow 5 (or 4) or Notability for example and you'll see it pales in comparison. Penultimate is an abandoned app. There has been no attempt to make it a serious competitor in the field of handwriting apps. What a pity.
Great program
by Level 69 warlock on 2019/11/19 18:18
I’ve been using this program for the last two years of my college experience in the iPad with a Apple Pencil and it help me organize all of my journals and agendas into one uniform spot
An Awesome App

Probably the best note taking app I have.
Great, but also kind of awful
by briankangmh on 2019/10/31 19:21
Penultimate got most things right: a natural feeling pen tool that works great with Apple Pencil, not overloaded with features etc. The pen tool can make extremely fine lines but gets sufficiently thicker with pressure. This makes the writing tool feel MUCH more natural than most apps which make you feel like you’re writing with a child’s marker. And when you use the eraser, the faster you swipe around to erase, the larger the “bubble” indicating the size of the eraser GETS BIGGER. Clearly they have a genius on the team, kudos. Because the writing experience feels so natural, Penultimate is the best digital writing experience I’ve ever had. Penultimate does have some glaring problems, however: for example navigating the pages is extremely confusing. Your notebooks are sorted into notebooks, which makes sense, but within each notebook is... more notebooks? It’s very hard to figure out which level of organization you’re at. And to move between pages, you need to tap a back button: why not make it feel natural and pinch to overview all pages? Navigating between and managing pages in your notebooks is a disaster, which ultimately makes the app horribly confusing. Might as well move between directories using the terminal. When you pinch to zoom into your notes, a pop up window appears at the bottom of the screen that scrolls along as you write in it. I find this solution to the zooming problem problematic. It’s not clear how you escape zoom mode, it seems there are multiple ways. You can move the window around the page to Change where on the page you’re looking at. The Features are there but it’s awkward and inelegant. I personally would find it much more natural to simply zoom the entire screen in like zooming into a photo. It’s clear that the zoom feature is designed to let you write away at the bottom of the screen without constantly scrolling around the page manually. However I also personally think since the pen tool is so fine and accurate there isn’t a need to be able to write while zoomed in the first place. The zoom feature should be rethought. Finally penultimate doesn’t seem to support the double tap feature on Apple Pencil which allows you to quickly change between the eraser and the current tool you’re using. There is no reason not to support this feature. Ps. A couple bugs that badly need addressing. When you multitask and come back to the app, you lose the page you were working on and need to navigate back to it (which is not helped by the fact that navigation is so unnatural). Also, when using the app in landscape Orientation, the point where you touch the Apple Pencil to the screen and the point where the line gets drawn is offset. Every. Single. Time. Very annoying but should be an easy fix. I believe the page should simply stay as is and fill up the whole screen instead of rotating the page to keep it in portrait orientation so it only fills up half the screen. This would make it much more natural to use in landscape mode, right now it’s very annoying to be writing on that tiny page. This could be a built in feature or at least there could be a setting to toggle it. Again penultimate would be an awesome app if these problems would be fixed, which would be easy I’m sure. I’m looking forward to what penultimate can become in the future.
Organisational Handicap
by IndigoT9 on 2019/10/30 06:28
I hate that it does not allow you to organize your notes, in the sense that if you want pick up an entire page and move it to another note or notebook, there’s just no way you can do that. You will be forced to either write the entire stuff once again in the other notebook or use the scissor tool and lasso your notes out in bits and pieces- how cumbersome and unintuitive! Technology is supposed to make life easier and not more difficult than it already is!
Great help with everyday notes!
by boom boom babby on 2019/10/21 01:30
This app is very helpful with school work and writing school essays. One thing i do recommend is that you do have a style pen or whatever it is called to help you write, it also can let you work on your drawing skills on a device. Now I will tell you the things I don’t like about this app: i do wish it could have more colors and it would be nice if you could erase easily then taking forever! so this what I think about this app so try it yourself and write your own review!
So frustrating!
by @triciafb on 2019/10/15 14:42
I use this app for work. It has endless hours of my work time on it. Last week, when I went to open the app it asked me to rate it. However, you could not click on any of the options to rate/not rate/remind later. Thus, the app was frozen. I checked my iCloud to ensure I had recently backed up (which I had). I deleted the app and reloaded and ended up losing several hours of my work. I just went to open the app again and it is doing the same-frozen on the opening page with a request to rate. Please help! I can not afford to lose any more of my work. This has caused an incredible amount of stress for me. Going to look for a new app to try. VERY disappointed
Good handwriting, Limited features.
by Sanity_Rose on 2019/10/01 23:00
The handwriting is better than most apps, but the features are limited when you consider what Good Notes and Notability can do.

Great App... want more
by Swesty99 on 2019/09/25 17:22
UPDATE: Becoming more and more outdated...(9/25/19) I now feel that I can take notes on my iPad Pro and so far Penultimate has been my note taking app of choice. Its clean and easy to use and the biggest selling point is the ability to sync with Evernote and being able to append to messages that refresh in Evernote. To add to this functionality I would love to see the ability to select Evernote tags, notebooks and reminders. Adding Skitch functionality (the ability to draw on imported documents, pictures, etc...) would be icing on the cake.
Needs a Update
by Madhur.kr on 2019/09/25 17:10
I’ve been using this app for a long time and I love it. But the new iPad os update has made the pencil more sensitive and whenever i try to write, it tries to swipe to the next page. Please fix this.

Doesn’t Work on iPad OS 13
by vcarter0723 on 2019/09/24 23:29
Please update the app for iOS 13, it doesn’t even let you write anymore. Writing with Apple Pencil (or finger) with pen selected just makes you scroll. I use this app every day, please update!!!
Worked well until ios13
by Imagoatq on 2019/09/24 18:52
Now I can’t write smoothly any more. Pencil or finger just gives little dots or lines but won’t allow me to actually write. Was a great app until now.
Missing Key Features
by buzzpark on 2019/09/22 01:30
This act works really well and looks beautiful with the iPad Pro and the Apple Pencil. However it is missing a few key features that are available on notability and other note taking apps. For example, I really wish there was a hand writing to text conversion tool. Also I would like to be able to organize my pages within each notebook and whatever order I want. Other than that this is a good app and I like the fact that it automatically syncs to my Evernote account.
Pen slips in ios13
by clapperman on 2019/09/19 18:05
I love the app’s connectivity to Evernote. But the app is slipping on the page when using the Apple Pencil on ios13. That really is difficult to use and defeats the purpose of the app.
Incredible app
by clintoncase on 2019/09/18 20:06
This app is the reason I will graduate law school ahead of 90% of my class. I’ve told my friends, family, and anyone who cares to listen about how incredibly easy and simple it is to use. Could not recommend highly enough.
Hopeful, but needs some work
by Carlos of OK on 2019/08/09 05:30
When using the app, I would add books to my storage. However, they wouldn’t show up. I would try to add the book again, but it says that it exists already. The good that comes from the app is the diverse page selections.
Deleted all of my notes.
by Nepeta- on 2019/08/05 03:32
Was a great app, I used it for simple sketching when other art apps tended to be too bulky for my needs. One day I opened the app and all of my folders were gone. It's very disappointing because I didn't save many of the things I had drawn.
great app except for one thing
by Tom Cal on 2019/07/21 15:21
It’s a great app for note taking: simple an intuitive and does just what you need. The one thing that I find really annoying, though, is that it doesn’t have an option to set it to “pencil-only” writing like other apps that use the pencil. That is, I always end up making stray marks with my fingers.
Has improved!!! Evernote sync is seamless

My favorite writing app
by Joelle Scott on 2019/07/17 13:29
Excellent app for manuscript writing! What sets it apart is the auto drift feature that I have not seen on any other writing app. Works perfectly with the Apple Pencil as well!
Unfortunate...
by Evan_13 on 2019/07/12 21:09
While this was a leader in the handwriting space (well before Evernote acquired this app), it has gone down hill. Multiple bugs, no updates in over a year, nickel and dime-ing users to death for every single different “paper,” and ultimately functionality that should be built into Evernote.
Great app
by Gh.Shahbakhsh on 2019/07/04 06:13
I love this app and the fact that it’s free is such a big deal. But there are a few things that bother me. The first is that it doesn’t have any palm rejection. Also double tap of apple pencil 2 doesn’t work in this app. Other than these i find it a great app.
Excellent Application
by austin_wilcox7 on 2019/07/01 21:17
I have thoroughly enjoyed using Penultimate. I used it during my Calculus 2 course, and it made my life a whole lot easier. I like the organizational layout for pages, and the simplicity of the app.
Extreme battery drain
by migmigmi on 2019/06/13 10:19
Fine notebook app with a few forgivable bugs / quirks. One that I can’t really forgive is the massive battery drain if you leave the app open. Please fix.
Hard to beat this...
by rmo5008 on 2017/01/06 02:26
Penultimate, used in conjunction with Apple Pencil on the iPad Pro 9.7, is hard to beat. It literally looks like i am using a sheet of paper and a pen to take notes in a notebook. I wish that it had sub folders for the notebooks as this would greatly help organize my thoughts when writing novels. Right now, I am using penultimate to create a children's book for my son. Using Procreate, Pencil, and the Smart Keyboard, it is the most seamless creating tool i have ever used. Granted, I haven't used this app with any other stylus. I have used other note taking apps with other styli and I have to say that Apple Pencil is the best ever. So maybe it is the pencil that makes this app so great. I have not yet felt the need to try any other note taking app because Penultimate satisfies most of my needs. Four stars because it meets those needs. I'm not feeling pressed to buy anything. Highly recommend in conjunction with pencil.
It's good but I keep finding things I wish it did
by kbearOSU on 2017/10/04 17:35
I use penultimate to take notes for my classes on my iPad Pro. It's nice to just be able to write, not type notes. But it's not perfect. The two major things I wish it did was zoom in on pictures. I often times insert screen shots from PowerPoint or online and when I go back to review my notes I am always trying to use two fingers to zoom in on the picture which is just a feature the app does not do. I also wish it allowed me to arrange my notes in whatever order I want. I have my app organized so that each class gets its own 'noteboook' but when I open the notebook I don't get organize the 'sub notebooks' in my own order, the app automatically organizes them in order of most recently opened. My other big compliment and this one is really annoying! When I double tap my home button to switch between apps to say take a screen shot and then go back to penultimate the app opens at a page 2-3 pages above where I left it. This is probably the most disruptive feature the app is lacking to note taking in class. Maybe Evernote can make this happen in the next update. I really hope so! This app has so much potential and with a little more care it could be perfect

Simple and fast with a painful bug
by iamanicknamehearmeroar on 2017/12/30 15:11
This app does a wonderful job of keeping things simple when all you want to do is write. Unlike OneNote, the writing is so much faster and responsive, without any noticeable lag and I feel like everything I've looked for on this app had expected behavior. I never had look up how to do something. The biggest complaint that I have for this app is when switching between apps, the position of your screen is lost. Your placed 3-5 pages above the last page of the book (or generally wherever you left off). It's infuriating when I'm writing down some notes from a web page or plotting a graph and having to constantly find my position again. It destroys my flow and makes the experience more painful and frustrating over time. Hopefully next dev cycle they can target this issue and bring some sensible behavior into this problem.
Could be better, but it does its job
by Bridgesinthesky on 2016/08/22 19:29
I am a premed and Ive been using penultimate for a while now with apple pencil, its a great way to replace paper and i like how the pen tool flows. But the app is limited in some ways - there should be at least one more pen or pencil option. - more color options, maybe a color wheel so infinite colors would be possible. I like to take colorful notes so i wont get lost in the learning process. - if a color wheel is not a good option, then the highlighter should have neon-ish color options, because it looks weird and rough with the regular available colors - the crop tool would be flawless, but when you drag the selected part it leaves a few pieces of ink behind which is extremely annoying - a ruler would make math notations amazing - eraser size options would be nice but not number one priority -sub-folders inside the notebooks would optimize organization I dont think i need to pay for a better note taking app when penultimate is the best one to capture handwriting without making it look shaky or like i had used only my finger, i already invested too much on ipad pro, but i just wish it had a couple more options.
Promising
by Dearheart22 on 2018/04/02 23:10
I use this app every day to take notes in class. So far it is the easiest app to use that does what I need. There are a couple things, though, that I wish penultimate did. One thing I would love to see is the ability to create shapes and straight lines. I think being able to incorporate basic shapes is super useful in note taking. I also think the lasso tool could use improvement. It’s really frustrating having to circle something five times trying to get it to capture all of what you want only to have it miss a few spots within the lasso. I would also love to see more features for adding photos. Being able to crop, rotate, zoom, bring forward, send back, etc. are pretty common and would be really useful. My final note is to fix the “bookmark” capability. It’s really annoying to switch between apps because whenever I switch back to penultimate it brings me two pages above where I left off.
Could be a really great app, but falls short.
by The Whigs on 2018/01/23 19:39
Penultimate is a great app with a frustrating user experience. The writing is smooth and the tools are very useful for taking notes in meetings or in class, but a few flaws make using the app so frustrating that it’s almost not worth using. 1. You can only change the title of a note AFTER you close it. 2. When using an Apple Pencil you still have to use two fingers to scroll and scrolling through multiple pages is a pain because the app will randomly start writing where you’re scrolling awkwardly with two fingers. Most other note-taking apps support pencil-only writing and single finger scrolling, why doesn’t this one? 3. You can’t change the colors or appearance of notebook covers in the “notebooks” view. When you have more than a few notebooks it becomes a pain to find the one you’re looking for. 4. If you switch between apps, when you return to Penultimate it starts you a few pages back from where you left off. This means you have to constantly scroll through the note to continue from where you were writing before you left the app. If Evernote fixes these problems, the app could become the best note-taking app in the App Store. Unfortunately it doesn’t look like Evernote cares much about user experience.
This is the best app on my iPad...Hands Down
by omnizen on 2016/09/28 02:48
Ios10 broke this app with Jotscript 2 stylus. Really difficult to use with jotscript and has adversely affected my workflow. Previous review before ISO 10 Penultimate with the recent release is the best release to date. This app is simply amazing, out of all the note taking apps. Notes Plus is good feature set however, I converted to Penultimate because I just use it more. It's super easy to just get down to what matters, my notes. The other apps are really all the same. They have small variances however, penultimate is minimalistic and only holds the best most used features. - syncs seamlessly with Evernote - unique and accurate handwriting experience (Jotscript is amazing) - awesome UI and design. So fresh and clean clean - search is a unbelievably accurate - highlighter & eraser style is very cool and unique - different view helps review notes without the cumbersome scroll - different styles of paper (now free) are super helpful This is def a must try and have app. It's really the best version of penultimate that I've tried. If anything the last piece of improvement is the PDF in annotation that would make it a 10 out of 10. This app you get to work and it just ... works. Everything you'd expect from Evernote. I use it heavy for personal and professional use. If you are a writer, heavy note taker or like to get stuff out of your head and into paper (digital) this is the most amazing app to do that in.
Only good thing is that it syncs to Evernote
by Love My Pencil, Love my Kindle on 2018/08/04 17:19
What a disappointment. I really like GoodNotes but trying to streamline my notes into Evernote, my filing and project management system. Penultimate seemed like a good replacement option. I have a Apple Pencil and iPad Pro, Evernote and Penultimate, hoping for a seamless system. Penultimate has about 1/10th of the functionality of GoodNotes. No PDF import for custom papers (can import jpeg, but results are blurred), can’t integrate text and writing at same time, no zoom of paper (zoom opens a box to write in, not zoom the paper), no conversion of handwriting to text, and many more. And once the note syncs in Evernote, no ability to markup or change the penultimate note in Evernote. Evernote’s stylus functionality is even more rudimentary than Penultimate. Again, what a disappointment! I went for Evernote Pro...maybe that was a mistake. Gonna give OneNote a try. Microsoft has done great things with Apple Pencil and iPad integration.
Bugs not fixed after two years
by JG-Man on 2018/08/30 17:23
I’m really disappointed with the Evernote and penultimate team. I’ve used this app for all my notes for years, and after the update to version 6, at lead two years ago, there are still bugs and missing functionality. First of all, when I enter a notebook, it always takes me to a page that is about 3/4 from the end, instead of the last page where I finished writing my notes last time. When I have 100+ pages, this is really inconvenient. Second of all, if I accidentally put my iPad into landscape mode, penultimate loses it’s place and again, takes me to a page 3/4 from the end. I don’t know why, but it makes things really inconvenient if I’m in the middle of a lecture and don’t have time to navigate between pages. The copy and paste functionally often misses pixels. I don’t know why it does this, but it makes the drag and drop stuff nearly unusable. Finally, there is still no functionality to merge notes. If I write my notes in he wrong notebook, the only way to fix it is to copy and paste manually, which as mentioned before, drops pixels. I’m definitely switching to Microsoft OneNote at the end of the semester. If penultimate fixes these problems by then, I’ll change my review to 5 stars. I really have liked penultimate, but I can’t recommend it at all given the issues.
Needs audio recording
by ilaird on 2016/09/06 13:15
Penultimate is a fantastic note-taking tool for people who use Evernote. But it's missing the ability to record audio while taking notes. I used to use a Livescribe pen for taking notes, so I had the recorded audio of a meeting together with the written notes, which was great. Now I use the iPad Pro and Pencil and Penultimate, which is fantastic - it synchs to Evernote automatically, takes typed or written notes, written text is searchable, etc., which is all fantastic. But it's version of audio recording is useless. You have to stop taking notes, and just record audio. There are other apps that record audio while taking written notes, like the Livescribe pen, but they don't synch with Evernote; at best they export to Evernote, which means that you have to remember to do so after every meeting, and if you update notes you have to re-export, creating duplicate copies of the notes in Evernote, one for each version. The syncing in Penultimate is fantastic! So I give it four stars. If they added audio recording while taking notes, I'd be thrilled to give it a fifth star.
Great App until you have lots of pages...
by CopyCatFilms on 2018/05/05 16:19
I’m not sure why Evernote seems to not really care about this app. It hasn’t been updated in 4 mos right now, yet I see things all the time that should be updated. I find it unacceptable given the fact that everyone uses apple pencils and stylus now. AND that note taking IS their business! I tried all the other note taking apps and eventually decided penultimate is the best. The writing, the organization and the syncing with Evernote are all necessary for me to use this app like...well a notebook. But when I open my moleskines, I used the ribbon or post-its to return to the last page I was using. You won’t find that in this app. It will take you to any random page within your notebook and then you have to scramble to find where you were. I looked this problem up and it seems that it’s been happening since 2015...wow. Nope. Lastly, couldn’t they add gestures for undo and redo?? I mean geez. I’m using a giant iPad, I don’t want to go all the way up to the corner to undo a mistake. Two-finger double tap, rewind...something! Anything! It’s back to the drawing board for me. I’m gonna have to try Good Notes again—even though I pay for Evernote premium!
Part of my daily routine for years.
by azoolkool on 2017/12/12 04:01
I love this app. It has many useful features including synchronization between devices through Evernote, collection by notebook, pen colors and thickness, highlighting, and zoom + side-scrolling as you write. I’ve literally been using this app for years as a part of my daily journal, even through its major overhauls and updates. This application is almost 5-star quality. There are just a few issues that have not been addressed that make it impossible for me to give it the full 5 in good conscience: 1) Occasional glitchy scrolling, both up-down and left-right. 2) Doesn’t play well with multitasking: loses my place and now for some reason zooms in on the main section 3) Blank notes/missing strokes. This one’s actually pretty major- some notes have seemingly been erased. If not the entire note, sometimes I’ve seen pen strokes disappear... If there was a fix for those few things, I would be overjoyed with this app, it’s really great aside from these few bugs. Please work on those, Evernote Team! :)
Great app, can be improved
by Sjain88 on 2016/10/12 19:08
Penultimate is great app to replace paper and pen however it can be made better. Currently there is a virtual button to take the box where we are writing to a level below but there is no option to move the box to the right. We need to move the box ourselves. It would be very helpful if by a click of a button, the writing space or the box moves to the right and positions itself where it currently is ending. Secondly, if we there is an option to move the box as we write. It makes it difficult to write properly. It will be better the box scrolls to the right when we lift the stylus and not while writing.
My go to!
by Tg89hh on 2017/06/17 14:10
I have downloaded a lot of note taking apps to see which ones I like best and I always go back to this one. As a designer the different papers allow me to space plan, attach a picture and sketch all at the same time. I have recommended this app to lots of creative friends. I deleted penultimate after I lost all my notebooks when Evernote changed everything about this app. I was incredibly disappointed to loose an app that I went to all the time. Nothing compared. Then I read that after many people complained Evernote brought back a lot of the old features of penultimate and it's back on my iPad! Thank god!! Thank you for bringing back the note books. After trying to find a replacement I would like to suggest a feature. Instead of having to to up and down to switch from eraser to writing tool, When you use the eraser I would like to see it automatically switch back to the selected pen or writing tool once you lift your stylist off the surface. It makes for a smoother more natural progression.
Potential to be a good app.....
by Speddie6 on 2018/06/06 19:35
I have tried many writing apps, and they all didn’t work for me. Then I saw Penultimate in the Today story Capture Your Thoughts, and I decided to give it a chance. I downloaded the app and found some bugs. It wouldn’t let me delete pages, when I zoomed in, the speed was too fast, and when I tried to adjust it, it just sat at 9 and there was nothing I could do about it. But there are some good things, too. The technology was very fast, and the tools were very nice. I liked the part where you could hand-write your notes, and the way you designed the app was very good. It has potential, but you just need to fix a few bugs and I will give a 5-star rating!
I use it a lot
by astrologychick on 2016/09/09 20:32
I like this app and use it a lot, not just for note taking but for simple graphic sketches as well. It has managed to replace my need to take a library worth of paper notes. I really enjoy the Apple Pencil with my iPad Pro, it works very well. It's not exactly like normal handwriting, but very close, and I can easily erase or undo mistakes. The one big complaint is that, relatively speaking the 'pages' are very small compared to writing on paper, more like a 5x7 notebook, which I find way too small. Otherwise I agree that there should be more color options, but it is a really good functional program for me.
Love it!
by mbct2889 on 2019/05/03 17:50
I use this app on an iPad using the Apple Pencil and it is great. I would just like a feature that would be easier to use if I wanted to draw diagrams or reference sketches, one that I could zoom in a little more easily and around the diagram/drawing. Having a separate function for that rather than one just for writing, maybe a tool to go back and forth, would be a great addition. Still love the app and I use it often. It is a great alternative to use for paper, but still be able to have the feeling of traditional writing. Hope to see how they advance it!
Needs Updates!!!
by naner30 on 2017/02/10 20:05
This app would be better if you could import Word Documents and PowerPoints. It would also be useful if you could edit photos and type in the app. It is inconvenient to have to take screenshots of every document I need then edit them in my photos and then import them to the app. Also, it would be helpful if you could write in split screen view. It would also help if the pages would not change in the notebook every time you close the app. It makes it very difficult to go back and forth between documents and books, especially when you are forced to do this because you cant write when the screen is split. It would be useful if this app was able to sink with Evernote.
One huge plus: Evernote support
by BenjPhoto on 2018/03/22 18:55
There really is very little to commend in Penultimate. It is very simply, a handwriting app. I use it for my daily (mostly) handwritten journal, and the only reason I do is that it automagically uploads the finished pages to Evernote. That’s it. That’s the single feature that keeps me from going elsewhere. Certainly, I could use another note taking app for handwriting. Heck, even apple notes allows that now. But then I’d have to export or share to Evernote when I was done..... I know.... first world problems. There are much better note-taking apps out there, and if Evernote isn’t a key factor for you, I’d jump on GoodNotes or Notability, both of which have more features/functionality than Penultimate.
Great note taking app
by cloudcover on 2016/08/26 01:47
Pencil support makes this app great to use. Now if they could disable finger input when using the Apple Pencil, that would be even better! Also, we need a button that takes us straight to the notebook title (2 levels up) and one that takes us to the main page (3 levels up) from the specific note being edited. If the home page could also display a shortcut to a favorite note, it would make it so much easier to jot down quick notes.
Okay- could be a lot better
by davebailey on 2017/04/18 20:03
Love Evernote, but the bugs in Penultimate keep piling up. Every time I switch away from app, the notes scroll backwards 5-10 pages, inserting photos causes them to likewise be inserted on random pages, not the most recent, and there's no way to scroll to another page while trying to insert one, selecting and moving text leaves spots and bits of the text all over, two-finger scrolling is difficult and sometimes stops responding (turning off multitasking gestures doesn't help), and when using an Apple Pencil highlighter angle and thus width of highlight is random, and your finger will still write and sometimes screw things up. A little work toward these bugs would go a long way.
Uber Useful App
by Elizapainter on 2016/11/01 18:19
I use Penultimate for my Bullet Journal. It works great so far. I love all of the papers that come with it and the fact that I can create my own - which I have done and it's super easy. Also love that it's searchable with Evernote. As a professional artist/illustrator being able to search myriad notes makes it absolutely wonderful. I've had it lock up a couple times and I wish there were a few more colors. Also wish I could get the interface to disappear unless I was using it, but other than that it's Great!!
A let down
by iviemma on 2018/10/08 19:23
I have used Evernote since it's inception. This year I got the latest iPad with the iPad pencil, I knew I would no longer need Evernote as much but I still wanted an app that allowed me to sync my note to Evernote and that's why I use this. It's just wrong, perhaps it wasn't made for the iPad pencil, I don't know. Pages don't connect, you have to scroll up with two fingers which I forget to do all the time which means some of my notes have lines running through them, etc. It is also possible that having seem the quality app that is notability, everything else is a let down. I wish it will be updated do those with the iPad pencil could have a better experience
It Works, but could be so much more
by t4c0c4t on 2018/10/03 13:12
After many years, it’s still very clear to me that penultimate was an acquisition by evernote and not a ground up notetaking app built by them. For example, why is it that there’s a separate annotation and drawing/writing function in evernote? Why isn’t penultimate fully integrated into evernote as a first class way to take notes by now? Other problems include tagging, pdf annotation, syncing, minor navigation bugs, and a general lack of innovation velocity when compared to other handwriting apps. It’s 2018, and stylus’ are *really* good. I wish evernote would take handwritten notes seriously!
The ultimate.
by Dman14389 on 2016/08/21 06:31
I know I'm in a minoity here, but I think this is probably the best writing app out there.I use it for taking all my college notes because it is elegant and immensely useful, especially combined with Evernote. It works wonderfully with my Adonit stylus. What really puts it on top for me, though, is the smooth automatic, adjustable scrolling for writing at length in fine detail. No other app I've tried has felt as natural or intuitive. I highly recommend this app, particularly if you can afford a stylus like the jot script 2. It is worth it!
Doesn’t work with iOS 11
by maraxrose on 2017/09/28 16:03
I LOVED this app for so long and used it to write all my school notes instead of wasting tons of paper notebooks. It’s great that it syncs with Evernote so I can access them on all my devices. HOWEVER, Evernote apparently bought the app and then abandoned it because it hasn’t been updated in over a year and now that I’ve upgraded to iOS 11, I can’t access any of my notebooks or create new ones because the app just crashes. I can still see the notes through Evernote, but I can’t add more. This app was absolutely wonderful while it lasted. I’ll keep checking to see if it gets updated in the future, but I’ve moved on to another app for the time being (and it’s not as good, so I’m super annoyed). PLEASE UPDATE THIS APP!!!
Good, but could be better
by superjohn_rtp on 2016/07/22 14:17
I've been using the basic version with the Apple pencil to take notes instead of using paper for several weeks now and it is mostly great. The only big issue is when I pick up to continue writing towards the right edge of the screen, the app tries to scroll with my hand rest instead of writing, so I have to adjust a bit. It would be nice if the app gave deference to the pen over other inputs. Update: Having some concerns about notes that were sync'd to the cloud, I deleted them from the Evernote server but that also deleted them locally. Would prefer a secure version that doesn't require 'the cloud"
IOS 10 Broke this App--Apple Pencil Stutters Madly Now
by mikedoyleblogger on 2016/11/19 18:00
iOS10 broke this app. It's not just the Jotscript stylus that won't work correctly anymore. Apple Pencil won't work correctly, either. Your letters (in handwriting) and lines (in drawing) constantly stutter and cut out, or alternatively continue even though you've lifted the stylus off of the screen. Easy, clear handwriting now looks like chicken scratch because the app keeps dropping and confusing its connection with the input system. I used Penultimate very heavily for personal not-taking for six months on my iPad Pro 12.9 and it worked like magic. The moment I installed iOS 10, Penultimate became almost useless. I paid for it and so did a lot of other people. Now fix this app.
Very frustrating if you need help
by 24851513 on 2018/07/22 15:35
This app has been amazing for my meeting files on the go, but when I purchased a new device, my information did not transfer over correctly. Any time I try to access one of the files, the app crashes. I spent an hour at Apple, and know it is not a hardware issue. There is not way to get help or support short of online blogs and public forums... or you can pay to upgrade and have access to help via email. Very disappointing that there is ZERO customer support, not even a chat function. I am unable to use the app any longer, and will have to look for something else.
Penultimate
by JD541 on 2017/01/29 23:56
I love this app. It's perfect - almost. There is one glaring issue I have with it.. importing photos. One use I have for this app is writing out a weekly schedule for my employees. Since there is no such template in the app, I created one in Excel, screenshot it, and tried to import into Penultimate. That worked well, except the picture came out extremely faded. So faded, in fact, that I can barely see anything. I tried this with other photos and got the same result. There is no troubleshooting article on it and I cannot contact support because I am not a subscriber. I'm not going to pay for something that isn't completely functional and requires a subscription to ask for help.
Good, but could still improve
by Geekynana on 2016/09/12 18:38
I am using it with my Apple Pencil and finding it great, especially across all my Apple devices. I really appreciate the interface with Evernote. There are still some things I would like to see included. First, I would love a blank, month planning calendar as one of the stationary options. I tried to make one, but could not write on it. Second, I would like some other pen nibs, especially an italic nib, which would make cursive handwriting easier, and more legible.
Major Concern
by XxBigSergexX on 2016/07/14 13:04
Let me start off by saying that when this app was working, I loved it . Its sleek, simple, convenient and helps bring artistic flow out of anyone who seeks it. Now my current issue , I trusted this application to create all of my organizational charts for my wedding coming up. Such as my seating chart , my invitation guide and much more. All of a sudden this app crashes everytime at startup and i can not open any of my existing files, this is major concern because i invested time in this app and it does not work. I have unninstalled and reinstalled and have power cycled my device done all of the trouble shooting possible and no luck.
Needs better organisation functions
by Toomanybarts on 2018/03/16 19:34
1. Would like to be able to move notes between notebooks within Penultimate - I can do it, but I have to use Evernote which is time consuming. 2. Would like to be able to open a notebook, see my notes and then swipe left to see open and view my notes in the next notebook. right now you have to close out of each notebook then open the next one to find the relevant note I’m looking for.
Ridiculous waste of time
by TimeTakr on 2018/04/25 23:20
I read all the reviews and was skeptical that I would be able to use it like most of the apps. I have never used a pencil before. When I opened the app, the pencil would not work. I was faced with all kinds of setup maneuvers and after about 15 minutes, I deleted it from my iPad Pro. The salesman told me I was going to love the Apple Pencil, but I have not found it to be very helpful. I could not find any kind of instructions to make it work. some people seem to have got it to work, but there are so many complaints about missing features that (like R. Lee Irmey would say) this App is CRAP! Can’t even give it a Zero Stars. One star is too much.
Apple Pencil Bug. Unusable in current state
by JoveroIV on 2017/11/29 17:50
I have contacted the support team many times and have been told that a fix is in the works the aforementioned bug but there has yet to be one so I have had to switch to a competitor. When drawing with the Apple Pencil and switching to horizontal mode and then back into vertical mode, the Apple Pencil is not drawing in the correct location. The writing ends up being about an inch to the left of where the actual pencil is positioned. Because of this, I can no longer use it to take handwritten notes like I once was able to. I feel like they have had ample time to fix the issue since the release of iOS 11.
