playmaker Football
Description
Are you a true football maniac? Are you a Monday morning quarterback? Do you dream of doing more than just watching the game? Do you lie awake at night pondering ways to beat a three-deep zone? Do you fantasize about being the head coach of a football team, controlling all the play design and play-calling and personnel decisions? If so, then playmaker FOOTBALL is the game for you. The Chalkboard Editor is the feature that makes playmaker unique from all other football simulations. Here you will build your playbooks, designing offensive, defensive, and special teams plays. Each playbook can have hundreds of plays, allowing you to prepare for ANY contingency. Of course, you'll want to try out each play on the Practice Field option here, so you can check the timing on pass plays and see if that zone really IS airtight! Blocking schemes, coverage assignments, pass routes, blitz angles . . . you're the coach, YOU DECIDE! The coach (that's YOU, son!) makes all the decisions -- from "who to draft" on down to "who will be the holder on extra point tries?" playmaker FOOTBALL unites three distinct modules into one seamless game program. First, you'll go through the Team Draft to "build" the team you need to best run your styles of offense and defense. Each player on the 30-man active roster (15 offense and 15 defense) has five ability categories: Speed, Strength, Agility, Intelligence, and Discipline. Each player can have up to 100 points assigned to each of the five categories. As a coach, you'll need to make sure that you have the personnel you need, whether that's a bone-crushing fullback for your power running game or an all-world quarterback for your wide open pass attack. YOU DECIDE! Once you have your playbook ready, it's time to PLAY SOME FOOTBALL! Thousands of dedicated users have already discovered the addictive qualities of realistic coaching. Don't be fooled by snazzy graphics and no substance. Creating your own plays and team makes this game way above the rest. Check out these features: Full compliance with all NFL rules. 30-man rosters with offensive and defensive substitution. Fully customizable ability descriptions for individual players. Simple but powerful play-editing tools for complete play design control. Plenty of "stock" teams to play against.

Don’t waste your your money. Man I loved playing this game. Everything about it. The music, the graphics, offense, defense, it was exciting. But this isn’t the game you remember. It crashes every time I try to open it. Every single time! I’ve emailed the company and to date zero response! So, take a pass on this game and save your money.

Revised review
by Koiutflycb on 2018/01/21 20:23
I’m revising my previous review because the latest version fixed all the problems I mentioned before. I now have this on my iPad and love it. I give it 4 stars because I’d like to see the full version (coaching AI, multiple teams etc.) on iOS. Then it would get 5 stars.

It's a great game, just add online play and fix some bugs and it will be a perfect game. Bugs include plays not working by CPU teams, penaltys getting called for no reason, etc.

I too was a long time fan of PMFB on Mac. Very disappointed at the bugs and lack of a version that takes advantage of iPad interface. This could be one of the great apps ... but is now relegated to one or two stars. Come on guys ... get some energy behind improving the product!
Great concept, but too buggy
by WoodlandsJeff on 2016/09/07 00:20
With bug fixes, this app has the potential to be a 4-star app. Tired of having the app completely crash, causing me to lose changes to my plays. The developer seems to have given up.

by BMW4me on 2015/10/12 02:07
I played back in 1992, I had high hopes that the bugs had been worked out over the last 23 years but the game is still pretty buggy. You can't save your team, pressing the big helmet button crashes the game, and the help menu doesn't help any; stuck trying to remember the commands from 20 years ago. Hope it gets updated soon!
Updated: missing old features... Like SAVE and Defense play diagraming
by Brokenman2 on 2015/09/06 08:36
Update: new version (1.2) does not save changes to player stats (yes, even when you hit save). Chalkboard does not allow access to defensive player diagraming (leaves you with the offense options). Update went backward, to beta level 0.8-- not ready for prime time. Old review, comparing version 1.0 to the old desktop version: Like many others, I have owned every version of this game, and have been a fan for a long time. What makes this football game great is the ability to create plays that follow a football strategy form of artificial intelligence. You draw it in the playbook, and the players play it out on the overhead view field. Here's the rundown. What's good: *Great football strategy game. *Still captures interest for a game that has been around since the early 90's. (There is just something about customizing your own team and playbook, then going up against others.) *Graphics are reminiscent of the old version (gone are the head and shoulders overview, now replaced with just a helmet). *Game has same format as always, and it still works-- hours of engrossing fun, almost endless replay-ability, and play tweaking ("I wonder if I have that receiver fake left, then break right...") *Good touch control port to the iPhone (with a couple of exceptions-- the repeat tapping of a player feature is not explained/counter intuitive; hitting the right player on a small screen with a complex play can be difficult; and old users will long for an incremental cut ("undo") when diagramming plays). *Draw your plays, then call your plays in the game. Great fun. What's missing: *Sound *The old artificial intelligence system where you could program the computer to select plays for you in various circumstances, and let the computer run the game-- this birthed many online leagues as you could upload custom playbooks (for example, you could design plays for 3rd and long between the 40 and 50 yard line, left hash mark-- the old game would allow you to set plays and give them a priority-- then it would increase the priority of that play if it gained yardage, and decrease its priority if it lost yardage-- a true artificial intelligence! Sadly, this is absent in this version-- search for and try the desktop version to see). *ability to import teams and playbooks. Overall, I'd say its worth it-- and with some development, could blossom into iPhone Playmaker Leagues of legendary proportions, with playbooks exchanged across cell/wifi networks... Fantasy Schmantacy... Its fun now, and has even more potential.
Almost perfect lunchtime league game
by Skye Goodfellow on 2015/09/06 06:00
I remember playing Playmaker when I had a Palm IIIc, and back then I had the ability to choose computer control for both teams or none. I would dearly love to have such control back, as this would make Playmaker a perfect game for lunchtime at work. I'd also like to be able to AirDrop teams to my friends ' phones.

I check back on this app every few months hoping changes have been made. This is the kindve game I'd be willing to pay for if it were fixed. I'll give 2 stars for potential and it being free
Disappointing
by Breesus1 on 2014/08/06 01:34
There is a recurring glitch which happens every game. The same penalty over and over. Too bad. Don't waste your money no matter how tempting.

Sell the rights to this game
by Frapster on 2013/10/22 11:04
Sell the rights to this game to a company like the makers of Clash of Clans. So much potential but you aren't going to make any money like this. Played on the Mac back in the day and single player as well as head-to head was awesome. I keep hoping someone would do this on iOS but this incarnation just won't cut it without funding of some kind.
Total failure
by Ledhome on 2013/09/04 10:04
This game just does not work on IOS.
I should have trusted the negative reviews
by NM State of Mind on 2013/08/03 14:18
I love the idea of a football game where you get to be the coach and just call the plays but this game fails. Same penalty happens over and over, the play starts with no result but running time off the clock and it appears support is nonexistence. Looks like the designer saw it was a dog and walked away. Apple should pull this app so no one else spends $ on this app that does not work.
Not very good
by Bubba344 on 2013/02/20 14:43
It is mildly laggy and just hard to work with
Doesn't work
by Bobmanc on 2012/11/05 02:16
This might be cool but it is clearly broken. I can't make it down the field one time without the system getting stuck in a penalty loop which then happens every single play after. Very disappointing.

by 15ckelly on 2012/01/29 07:02
When I bought the game and finally opened it in my I pad it looked immensely difficult to understand so i though i had wasted my money a week later here i am playing this game non stop it could have used a tutorial to start with but the instructions are very helpful. Take note, READ THE INSTRUCTIONS FIRST, you have to or this game will look like a ton of gibberish. That said the game is fun and when i finally figured out the timing and everything it became fairly simple to make plays.
Aight
by Sididjf on 2012/01/23 02:38
It is a lot of fun making plays and stuff but I can't play a game with the team I created and the plays I created. It keeps making me coach the same team over and over again with plays I have no idea what they are

Freezes alot but it is the best app ever
Good but...
by Hdjdjxjeodskd on 2011/11/27 05:32
It's awesome but you need to be able save formations AS formations instead of plays, motion needs to be added, CPU difficulty, and handoff y does it have to be a pitch and whenever u get it down in practice it screws up in the game. Good but could be great!
Fun but I stink
by KimberlyJ13 on 2011/11/05 01:18

by Ka_Ching on 2011/06/02 21:31
I have been loading plays that I have used for years in our little league football teams and this is just plain frustrating that I get so many errors and phantom penalties when trying to play a game. I really want to like this game and use it for tweaking of our plays but the fact that my receivers a being called for ineligibility is just plain ridiculous.

Big fan... Not quite there
by gotkd21 on 2011/03/02 01:45
I've been a big fan of this game for years, it is one of my all time favorites. I was thrilled to see that it made it to this platform. One problem with gameplay I'm still having on this version is the games unwillingness to continue at end of quarters or 2 minute warning. I have to stop the game, stop the game in multitasking, then restart. Pain. There are 2 features I'd love to see. automatic game play is one, including the ai features of the play calling. Second one is the ability to wirelessly(or thru game center) exchange teams, and maintain the team's overall record and stats. Lots of potential here. Hopefully you keep up improvements! Looking forward to it.

I love the game. I find myself playing it all the time, it's super addicting. Once bugs are fixed and new features are added. It will definitely be one of the best iPhone games out.
Good but could be better
by Scrubs620 on 2010/11/23 10:02
I like this app not as a game but as a way to work out plays. I coach youth football and drawing a play on paper tells you little about how it will look or work. A few bugs that could be fixed but it's a great start.

by The pissed off at your company on 2010/11/08 02:26
It's an ok game I like the concept but it needs some bug fixes. And it would b cool if you could send a player in motion before the snap.
Interesting...
by Ksam1557 on 2010/10/12 05:36
Ok the best part of this thing is probably the concept. Make a play, run it, form a team and playbook, then test it in game. The performance however was terribly sub-par. The most noticeable is the laggy playmaking, and the only reason I'm able to keep on making plays is because I have unnatural patience with this type of issue. Maybe if they strived to smooth it out, it could be a 5 star. Also add quick save confirmation. I made an awesome screen play twice and accidentally overwrote it twice because the quicksave has no confirmation. Last grievance is more preference. Add color to the players. I'm sick of black and white
Don't buy
by Cool61 on 2010/09/27 21:05
Don't waste you're money horrible game
Very disappointing
by GonzoSports on 2010/09/26 00:38
You can only make one team! And...it's just impossible to diagram plays, even though you can zoom, it's still to difficult to place players and routes where you want them. Stick with the desktop game.
Disappointed
by sasori on 2010/09/14 22:43
I've been a big fan of the desktop version of the PMFB for a long time and I was delighted to know that they released an iPhone version. The problem is that the chalkboard editor, which is the core feature of this game, is extremely hard to control by a finger. It takes 10x more time and effort to create a play than what it takes on the desktop version. Also, it would be great if I could import all the plays and players I've created on the desktop version. ...oh and as many people mentioned, no sound is a huge bummer.
No Good

Very good game for football junkies
by Parazan on 2010/05/04 11:08
I really enjoy this game. As it is currently, it does require a lot of patience when you are creating plays, but for us football strategy nuts, it's still a blast. If they would tweak the play creation just a tad and add a career mode with the draft, this game would be perfect.
Don't buy it crashes!!!!!

If you love football this is a must buy
by Schwartz55 on 2010/01/23 16:33
After playing his game for awhile. I love this game. The game has tight controls. The fact that you can make your own plays makes the 1.99 price point worth it. A couple of things I would like to see in update is a online pay, a seaon mode, predisigned plays that you can use and the ablity to send you guys in motion.

This is a beta version
by ohbejuan on 2010/01/13 04:38
I love this game. But it is not really a version 1.0. More like a version 0.8. Which is not too much of a problem, considering most iphone updates are free. With any luck they will have the crash problems fixed, and the randomly switching from offense to defense problem fixed. Also, we need the sound added.
Great game that can be much better
by jhaddad1 on 2010/01/12 01:49

Not ready for primetime
by FightOn!! on 2010/01/07 12:49
As a registered owner of PMFB for PC I was stoked to get an email announcing that it was out for iPhone. This is a game I have enjoyed for nearly 20 years, so maybe my expectations were too high. What a disappointment! No sound, no playcalling AI, frequent crashes, rule enforcement bugs, and a clumsy interface - mainly in the play editor. I suppose they pushed hard to make it out during football season, but it needs more time. After a patch or two I will try it again.
If you love the X and O's of the game..
by songwhisperer on 2010/01/07 00:09
I got this on a MAC so many years ago. If you are a purist and have a love for the game, this is a must have app for the iPhone or iTouch.
Was hoping to see this on the iPhone
by Jarsby on 2010/01/06 18:27
A strong first effort for the iPhone version of this venerable game. The graphics are nice and fluid and not overly cluttered. Selecting plays in game is quick and easy. Creating your own team and drawing up your own plays and seeing how they'll work is a lot of fun. The Chalkboard can be esoteric, so read the documentation (maybe twice). I agree with the comment on sound, which would be a nice addition.

I've been playing PMFB on Mac since 1992 or 1992. It's been around that long!!!!! We used to play in AOL leagues before fantasy football and all that stuff. My fave game of all time. I've owned it in every incarnation. My only gripe at moment is I need to be able to import my old team and its hundreds of plays. Please guys, don't make me re-do everything. Maybe that feature's already there and I haven't seen it yet. great game.
What a great game!
by martimer on 2010/01/06 15:56
If you like (American) football, this is the application for you. Seriously. No other game I have played actually allows you to create offensive ad defensive plays like this one does. I played this a bunch back in the 'old days' and immediately bought it when I saw it here in the App Store. It works well, and after getting accustomed to the new interface, I was playing just as poorly as ever in seconds! Someday, I will learn the defensive part of the game. Sure is great to see it again!
Nice
by adbjmb on 2010/01/05 12:01
Nice game. You have control. It's nice to be able to draw up your own plays. I only have one question though. Where's the sound ? Football can't be played in silence. Trust me, that is one big part of football that is missing in this app. You will get some bad reviews for that but I'm going to give 4 stars just because this is the only football game that I know of that you can create your own plays.

Good
by 15ckelly on 2012/01/29 07:02
When I bought the game and finally opened it in my I pad it looked immensely difficult to understand so i though i had wasted my money a week later here i am playing this game non stop it could have used a tutorial to start with but the instructions are very helpful. Take note, READ THE INSTRUCTIONS FIRST, you have to or this game will look like a ton of gibberish. That said the game is fun and when i finally figured out the timing and everything it became fairly simple to make plays.
ok and will get better
by brithedark on 2010/01/06 16:42
I've been playing PMFB on Mac since 1992 or 1992. Maybe that feature's already there and I haven't seen it yet. great game.
Nice
by adbjmb on 2010/01/05 12:01
Frustrating
by Ka_Ching on 2011/06/02 21:31
I have been loading plays that I have used for years in our little league football teams and this is just plain frustrating that I get so many errors and phantom penalties when trying to play a game. I really want to like this game and use it for tweaking of our plays but the fact that my receivers a being called for ineligibility is just plain ridiculous.
Good but could be better
by Scrubs620 on 2010/11/23 10:02
I like this app not as a game but as a way to work out plays. I coach youth football and drawing a play on paper tells you little about how it will look or work. A few bugs that could be fixed but it's a great start.
Very disappointing
by GonzoSports on 2010/09/26 00:38
You can only make one team! And...it's just impossible to diagram plays, even though you can zoom, it's still to difficult to place players and routes where you want them. Stick with the desktop game.
Good but...

It's awesome but you need to be able save formations AS formations instead of plays, motion needs to be added, CPU difficulty, and handoff y does it have to be a pitch and whenever u get it down in practice it screws up in the game. Good but could be great!

Sell the rights to this game to a company like the makers of Clash of Clans. So much potential but you aren't going to make any money like this. Played on the Mac back in the day and single player as well as head-to head was awesome. I keep hoping someone would do this on iOS but this incarnation just won't cut it without funding of some kind.

playmaker Football

I too was a long time fan of PMFB on Mac. Very disappointed at the bugs and lack of a version that takes advantage of iPad interface. This could be one of the great apps ... but is now relegated to one or two stars. Come on guys ... get some energy behind improving the product!

by WoodlandsJeff on 2016/09/07 00:20

I remember playing Playmaker when I had a Palm IIIc, and back then I had the ability to choose computer control for both teams or none. by gotkd21 on 2011/03/02 01:45
I've been a big fan of this game for years, it is one of my all time favorites.

Good but could be better
by Scrubs620 on 2010/11/23 10:02
I like this app not as a game but as a way to work out plays. I coach youth football and drawing a play on paper tells you little about how it will look or work. A few bugs that could be fixed but it's a great start.

I'm sick of black and white

by GonzoSports on 2010/09/26 00:38
You can only make one team!

After playing his game for awhile. I love this game. The game has tight controls. The fact that you can make your own plays makes the 1.99 price point worth it. A couple of things I would like to see in update is a online pay, a seaon mode, predisigned plays that you can use and the ablity to send you guys in motion.

Not ready for primetime
by FightOn!! on 2010/01/07 12:49
As a registered owner of PMFB for PC I was stoked to get an email announcing that it was out for iPhone. This is a game I have enjoyed for nearly 20 years, so maybe my expectations were too high. What a disappointment! No sound, no playcalling AI, frequent crashes, rule enforcement bugs, and a clumsy interface - mainly in the play editor. I suppose they pushed hard to make it out during football season, but it needs more time. After a patch or two I will try it again.
If you love the X and O's of the game..

by Jarsby on 2010/01/06 18:27
A strong first effort for the iPhone version of this venerable game.

Needs help
by BMW4me on 2015/10/12 02:07
I played back in 1992, I had high hopes that the bugs had been worked out over the last 23 years but the game is still pretty buggy. You can't save your team, pressing the big helmet button crashes the game, and the help menu doesn't help any; stuck trying to remember the commands from 20 years ago. Hope it gets updated soon!
Update could top the charts

When this game worked I played it more than anything. But in 2019 it simply doesn’t open. I’m tell you guys, if you update this game to just make it playable, it’s a hit! Please please fix this game!
Do not download this game!!

Don’t waste your your money. Man I loved playing this game. Everything about it. The music, the graphics, offense, defense, it was exciting. But this isn’t the game you remember. It crashes every time I try to open it. Every single time! I’ve emailed the company and to date zero response! So, take a pass on this game and save your money.

by WoodlandsJeff on 2016/09/07 00:20

That said the game is fun and when i finally figured out the timing and everything it became fairly simple to make plays.

by NM State of Mind on 2013/08/03 14:18
I love the idea of a football game where you get to be the coach and just call the plays but this game fails. Same penalty happens over and over, the play starts with no result but running time off the clock and it appears support is nonexistence. Looks like the designer saw it was a dog and walked away. Apple should pull this app so no one else spends $ on this app that does not work.
