mailtones - pager Alerts for Email and gmail
Description
mailtones gives you pager-style push email alerts and distinctive custom email sounds for your email, including custom alerts different contacts, subjects and senders. Manage your email distractions - and know immediately when important messages arrive! "In my tests I found mailtones to be reliable, as advertised. In addition, the distinctive tones—especially the louder, longer ones—are attention-getters" MACWORLD - 4 Mice Rating. See mailtones for yourself - go to http://mailtones.com/youtube OVERVIEW Customise your email alerts to only get notifications of the messages that matter - mailtones can show you a pop-up "push alert" on your iPhone or iPad, showing the sender and subject of your new email message. You'll know instantly whether you need to launch Mail and read the message, or if it can wait. One practical way to use mailtones is to set your default email tone to silent, or ignore, and just set audible alerts for people and message subjects you need to know about - then when your iPhone beeps or buzzes, you'll know its an email message that matters. Pick your phone out in the crowd with a new email tone. We bundle over 60 alert tones with mailtones, from subtle professional tones to pager alerts, load horns and whistles - perfect for hearing email in a noisy environment, or alerting you to very important messages. BENEFITS • Pick a new email tone from over 60 we supply • Set custom alerts for contacts, subjects, recipient addresses and domains • Get quick alerts of incoming messages • Cut distractions by setting unimportant email to silent or ignore • "Do Not Disturb" automatically stops alerts at night • Link your devices to receive email alerts on iPhone and iPad • Simple set-up from gmail or any server which supports "forward a copy" forwarding of email • Developed and passionately supported by a UK company with over 14 years experience in the mobile industry HOW IT WORKS mailtones works by using a copy of your email messages to send a Push Message to your iPhone or iPad. To generate this push message, we scan a copy of your email messages on our server. We realise this approach will not be suitable for everyone. When you run mailtones, we'll give you a special email address @mailtones.net - forward A COPY of your email to that address and any mail you receive will make your iPhone beep with your chosen tone. You can choose to copy all your email to mailtones.net, or use filters to just forward some messages. When email arrives at our server, we send a Push message to your iPhone or iPad - causing it to beep, whistle, ring or buzz! Please make sure you can forward a copy of your email to a second address - gmail users can do this, but we understand Yahoo Mail does not provide this facility. mailtones uses the Amazon EC2 platform, to allow for extreme reliability and stability, however we cannot guarantee delivery of message notifications. gmail forwarding now requires a code - but we detect and show this in mailtones automatically, so you can enter it in gmail settings. REVIEWS See mailtones for yourself - go to http://mailtones.com/youtube "mailtones is an idea whose time has come. If you're tired of pulling out your iPhone every five minutes to see if that new message is something important, now you've got an audio-cue alternative. Indeed, for anyone inundated by e-mail, mailtones is money well spent." Major Website Review "mailtones works well, takes the push notification system to the next level and is worth the price tag." GearDiary Review Privacy Policy ----------- Electric Pocket does not share any information provided to our service with any third parties. No Electric Pocket employee or third party has direct access to emails sent to the system, and we make all reasonable efforts to ensure that your information is kept private and secure.
Just works.
by JessaLu on 2014/07/10 19:01
Yes you have to forward your email however, if you are nervous about sensitive emails getting sent to a different server, create a filter that keeps them from getting forwarded (for example, any email I receive that includes the words "password reset" does not get forwarded). I've tried other apps that only do notifications from polling your inbox but they aren't as reliable. With boxcar 1 getting shut down, I needed something that would let me distinguish between email accounts and this app does it. It's a little spendy, but it works.
Unreliable
by Pecos Bill on 2014/06/10 14:43
With the death of PushMail, I needed a replacement that worked the same. I forward just the emails I want notifications for. Problem is like others say, the service is horribly unreliable. I read somewhere they blamed Apple for slowness. It's not Apple. If it was, people would dump them. No, it's the servers we are sending email too. And, the repeat notification feature does not work, as you'd expect after reading the above. Last issue, if you do tap a notification, it tries to open the app then just gives you a black screen for an eternity before you finally see the app then it jumps you to Mail So if you don't care about reliability, go for it
Minimal updates
by 994YST on 2014/05/05 13:54
I've been using this app for around 2 years now. I haven't had some of the reliability issues other users have reported but the do-not-disturb based off of time seems to have broken in the most recent update. I've not contacted the developer for support because many of the other reviews seem to indicate that process is not usually fruitful.
This app is unreliable joke!
by Mar22vvm on 2014/04/30 01:53
Can't believe been so expensive, you think it would at least work! Unreliable works for a few days and quit for no reason... Frustrating!!
Works Great for me!
by JTP686 on 2014/04/28 19:43
I have been using this app for 3+ years. It work great for me.
Bad support, unreliable
by BubbaOnTheNet on 2014/04/04 20:40
Knowledge Base on website is not complete and content stale/not-relevant. Support has yet to respond to email query. App is very expensive and as reported very unreliable -no statement or advisory if their Mail services are up either making troubleshooting very difficult. This has been experience by several in our office who use the app for their iPhones.
Absolutely horrible
by I don't leave reviews but... on 2014/04/04 18:48
This app is horrible. It does not work AT ALL!!!!!!
Not Reliable for Business & Developer Not Paying Attention
by DodgeCrate on 2014/02/15 02:31
The only reason I got this was it is one of the few cusomizable tone apps out. But the system is constantly stopping working, and support only has advice for you when it is your fault - that is the only condition they recognize. Not reliable enough to notify you when your boss or client has sent you an important email - and the tones and support have not had any effort put into them for years. Can't record your own and sometimes the app mixes up the tones between ID's. Then the system will just quit working for weeks at a time. My advice is just PayPal the Developer $10 and don't even bother trying to use the package. He just wants the money.
Needs Improvement
by The Mannerist on 2014/02/06 21:03
It's pretty good, but for $9.99 there should be a lot more and better tones available. Many of the tones are similar to each other (e.g. "Glass" and "Coins"), and many have a very cheesy Atari 2600 kind of sound. When you assign tones by contact, it only seems to work for one email address per contact. Being able to assign by keyword would be nice, like in PushMail. The notifications also seem a little slow. Overall it's promising and will hopefully improve. I'd give it 3 stars if it weren't so expensive; as it is, 2 stars for an average app at a premium price.
Not working
by Ekwulobia on 2014/02/06 14:16
I got this app as pushmail got discontinued. This program does not work. You can not trust this app to alarm you of any message except test messages.
Neat App
by Mike Hammerbe on 2014/02/05 21:06
Love getting a special alert when I get email from a VIP.
I want to love it, but it's unreliable
by BP407 on 2014/02/03 19:14
I really want to love MailTones. I switched to it after PushMail was discontinued (which worked flawlessly). Everything is good with this app except for the alerts are VERY unreliable. Sometimes you get them, sometimes you don't. I don't believe this is an Apple issue as I get proper push alerts from similar programs without any problem. If the reliability was improved I'd rate this a five star app. While I'm griping, it would be very nice to be able to import your own custom alert sounds via iTunes File Sharing.
AWESOMENESS!!!
by njfiremegs on 2013/11/22 20:50
I was grateful to have Iain Barclay help me out. I could NOT figure out the app and was ready to delete. After an amazing proof of customer service, the app is now working perfectly on my iphone. I can distinguish MANY different email alerts for work. I even set up the "wah" for my wife! :) This is truly a fantastic app, especially being in the data center industry. Thank you SO MUCH Iain for your outstanding support. It goes a long way!!!
Horrible. Horrible. Horrible.
by Flippinairman on 2013/11/22 06:21
They need to provide a code for this app to work. Left emails vm's messages and nothing. Lazy horrible. Complete waste of money and time.
Good app
by JB-2 on 2013/08/02 02:46
Great way to get email alerts
Mr.
by AndreSeattle on 2013/07/31 19:33
I would give this 0 stars if the option were available. Buyer beware: you'll have to forward a COPY of your emails to this company for the app to work. This is not stated on the product description and is a completely unacceptable breach of your privacy (and surely a direct violation of any corporate email acceptable use policy). Given the lack of ANY forewarning of the egregious release of privacy rights required to make this product work, I will be requesting a full refund from Apple and strongly urge that you do the same if you've fallen victim to this scam of conscious omission.
Works, but repeat notifications
by Adampk17 on 2013/06/17 07:47
The program does work and I loved it for a while. But lately it will alert me 3,4, maybe 8 times for a single email. That needs a fix.
Completely useless!!!
by vicgeorge on 2013/04/30 20:00
This app used to work great, but I guess their servers are overwhelmed without enough new revenue to upgrade. So, who is screwed? You are if you pay for this app!
It works
by VidaBlueMVP71 on 2013/04/17 14:06
Perfect for our paging and alert system. Never had an issue with reliability.
Not Happy
by DutchUSA1 on 2013/03/13 12:58
I wrote and asked for a refund only to be complexly ignored. The software requires that a copy of your emails be forwarded to this company in order to work. Due to security reason I cannot allow this so the software is useless to me.
won't work
by lolait on 2013/03/10 15:05
I try for several hours to get this app to work. I even communicated with the developer and they try to help, but it useless. I really too much time and my money wish I won't be able to get a refund. Good luck!
I have stopped using it!!!
by MaryNoel on 2013/02/25 03:26
It constantly alerts me when I open other apps, I have reloaded it several times and since Apple came out with VIP ALERTS I have removed it from my phone. It is too quirky and unreliable, too bad I can't get my money back :((
Very good app
by MorganML on 2013/01/28 20:54
Works great. Slightly complex set up due to several settings within the app Nd related settings in the iOS, but those are one time decisions.
Mostly good -- except for repeat feature
by Knightshot on 2013/01/12 18:51
I am generally very happy with this app and its features. I would give it five stars, but I have reduced my rating by one star because one important feature (for me) does not work, and I have reduced it by another star because I have not received a response to the email I sent to the designated Electric Pocket email address regarding my problem. I have an iPhone 5. I always receive the alerts quickly and correctly -- except I do not receive subsequent "repeat" alerts for cases where I have activated the repeat option. I leave my iPhone untouched after the initial alert, but the subsequent alerts that should come at 5 minute intervals never arrive. This is disappointing.
Works great
by TC Atanta on 2012/12/18 20:51
This is working great on my iPhone 4. Really shame it is so many moving parts, but it really works fine.
Mail tones works
by Chief2001 on 2012/12/11 01:07
I use this for fd paging alerts. Works on both iPhone and iPad.
This Is A Great Product
by rhrose on 2012/12/08 14:09
MailTones is absolutely great. Push email is truly lacking in IOS. MailTones provides instant notification of incoming email messages. Very configurable. Couldn't live without it! Electric Pocket - keep up the great work!
Works great for me
by Kailua Al on 2012/11/29 02:48

Bad Execution
by Zwatts773 on 2012/10/29 13:35
Was really excited, thought I'd have the flexibility I used to have on my blackberry to know which E-mail address and contacts were messaging me. Unfortunately I feel I wasted my money on this app, completely useless. The instructions are semi-clear it looks liike you can set up everything through the app, but no you have to go into your individual E-mail accounts to set up the forwarding. I spent several hours before I figured this out, and the 'support' page was not any more clear than the help section on the app. In the end, it hasn't work as I was led to believe it would. If I could have given 0 stars, I would have.
CRAP
by CG71067106 on 2012/09/24 21:42
This app is a piece of CRAP
Works like a charm
by f1zzl3b33f on 2012/09/07 21:41
At first I was a little hesitant about forwarding any emails to the developer until I realized I could use a throw away gmail address and set up my mail client to forward emails with sensitive content redacted. Furthermore, the reason we have to forward emails to the developer at all is because we have to play within Apple's walled gardens. That being said, this app works as advertised and serves an important purpose.
Terrible product
by Kjc1988 on 2012/09/07 02:17
Awful. I need to forward emails to them before I see them??? Complete lack of privacy.
Biggest pile of crap I've ever bought.
by imgroovy on 2012/08/22 20:08
Spent 3 hours trying to get it set up and still no luck. Seriously mad about this.
Works Great
by wbs65 on 2012/08/21 16:10
As an IT person, I get way too many emails each day but I do have some emails where I need to be notified. This does a pretty good job since the iphone doesn't have a way to do this with its own alerting. MailTones could be improved. It would be nice if it kept a histoyr of the last 10 alerts or so because if you clear the alert and you forget what the alert was, there is no way to find it. Would be a nice feature. Other than that it works really good.
Excellent app
by inelukii on 2012/07/17 16:40
This app is absolutely perfect for my needs as an operations engineer. I am able to configure alerts for different infrastructure alert emails I receive based on severity. This helps me respond appropriately to serious problems, while allowing me to sleep through problems that don't have to be dealt with immediately. The UI is simple and effective, the sounds cover a wide range of scenarios, and filtering based on subject is absolutely killer. I've been looking for an app like this for weeks since Boxcar became useless. Thanks for making such a great tool.
Deleted this program
by ShermanLL on 2012/07/06 21:53
Tried for hours to replicate the instructions. Gave up after receiving two emails with strange and obnoxious ring tone that couldn't find on my iPhone 4S. It may be a great program but it spooked me and wasted my time.

by linbeezu on 2012/05/22 05:37
Losing privacy by forwarding all emails to the company is not worth it!!!!!!
Dangerous and unsafe
by ATXDavidG on 2012/04/20 01:48
This is such an incredibly bad idea. This application expects you to forward a copy of every single email you receive to a strange email address. Only an idiot would agree to do this.
I'm not forwarding my email to a stranger!
by Business Girly on 2012/04/08 19:11
You're crazy if you think I'm going to forward my email messages to some strange email address. I don't know who you are or what capabilities you have on the other end. I know as an app developer that it's very shady to have people forwarding secure emails to an unknown account. Very shady indeed. Refund my money. This app has questionable protocol that Apple has no control over. Apple has no clue if these people are reading your emails. This is how identity theft starts.

Mailtones - Waste of money
by unhappy with support on 2012/02/28 15:46
This is the worst app that I or my family had purchased for our iphones. Reported the problem to their "support" and have not received any response. That was three days ago. If you are looking at this app - look further. Will update this reveiw if I ever hear from their "support".
No Privacy
by LuckyLynnP on 2012/02/19 15:14

Handy app
by StillwaterVol on 2012/01/14 06:08
The app is a little temperamental sometimes but still a good app to have to get an alarm for certain emails. Allows me to get system generated emails from work without having to constantly checking in or having someone do it for me.
Great for tech support
by earthmonkey419 on 2012/01/14 01:20
I was very happy find app after looking for several weeks. I needed to replace my Blackberry Level 1 notifications with something on the iPhone for critical pages that I CANNOT miss. The proved itself to be the best of all the apps I tried, and it had remained dependable. Greatly appreciated!

Transformative app
by Billy Beethoven on 2011/12/31 14:43
A huge time saver for anyone who receives more emails than they can possibly keep up with - I get unique alerts for emails received from important colleagues and clients. The combination of tones and on screen alerts, with zero latency, is very powerful.
1.52
by I fixed 1.52 update on 2011/12/28 20:11
Just wanted all of you to know that after installing the update I couldn't get my mail tones to work either. But what I did was resend them my email address and then sent a test reply. Worked perfect. Then I went into my specific accounts that I have set up with their corresponding tones and re input there domain address'. I only had 3 so wasn't a big deal and then had those ppl resend me an email and that worked perfect. Hopefully that will fix your problems!!
UGH!!!
by Lisaisnothappy on 2011/12/19 06:29
This worked PERFECTLY until... OS5!! Now it not only doesn't alert but it sends an email saying illegal domain detected!? I've even deleted and redownloaded the app - which I had to pay for again - go figure - and it did not change the problem! PLEEEEASE fix this - its annoying at best! (and yes I've check all my setting!)
Overrated
by shebaangz on 2011/12/13 18:23
I can't complain about MailTones NOT doing what they claim. I can say, there needs to be more clarity in the helps Department. Tech's should be fully aware of major issues involving email providers other than gmail. The App is NOT at it's Full potential. Outside of JB'ing my iPhone, I would like the ability to assign "My CUSTOM Alerts" to specific contacts. I've simply traded one list of sounds created by someone in Seattle, with a list of sounds created by someone on the other side of the lake. I have given up this ability on my BB Torch 9800 in order to use MailTones App on my iPhone. HUGE price to pay against my freedom for another's "Pager" Tone. Disgruntled MailTones user!
Worked great until update to iOS5
by mtbcyvlist on 2011/11/11 03:15
Worked perfect before the upgrade. Now when ever I receive a mail tone alert the configuration screen pops up. Please fix this bug! Other then that the app rocks on my iPhone 4.
Excellent APP
by Wispitgood on 2011/11/05 01:02
We use it for equipment failure notification with 100 pct success. Was a bit hard to setup, but worth the time. Nice to know where each email is from before having to look.
Great app when it works
by EmergencyResp on 2011/11/02 21:56
The app is great when it works. But being an emergency responder, I use it to notify me of certain E-mails from dispatch relating to calls so it has to work all the time. It works most of the time but stopped working for about a week which caused some problems. So when it works, it's a 5-star app. When it doesn't, it's a 1-star app.
Great App
by lannyt on 2011/11/01 16:01
Does exactly what it is supposed to do, and keeps doing it.
The best one.
by BobYourUncle on 2011/10/29 05:04
This is by far the best push notification app in the store, and I've tried 4 or 5 others. Highly configurable, and always works great. UPDATE: It WAS working great until I upgraded to iOS5. Now it doesn't send me push notifs anymore (and yes, I have them enabled in the Notifications area)
No volume control
by Trzcinski on 2011/10/28 17:33
The app does work as advertised, however, there is no way to control the volume of the notifications. Unless I completely mute my iPhone, notifications chine at full blast. Super annoying! To be fair, I believe this a iPhone programming limitation not the app itself. Most importantly, it is critical for the developer to mention that emails must be forwarded to their servers for this to work. I find that a bit deceptive. I would have not bought the app if I knew before hand.
It works PERFECTLY with Different Email Tones not just ONE !
by MasterChief5566 on 2011/10/26 17:06
I downloaded this so I could assign different email tones to my corporate emails since Apple cannot seem to do this. You have to forward a copy of your Corporate email to the Mailtones email address that this app will give you. My company uses Microsoft Outlook so in there I created a RULE to redirectemail to the Mailtones email address. In Mailtones i set an email Alarm for VERY important emails and a quieter alert tone for regular email. THIS PROGRAM WORKS GREAT! THANKS MAILTONES for doing something Apple doesnt seem to consider being an important tool !!!

What you Need to Know Before you Buy
by cUj0 on 2011/10/05 18:36
What they don't tell you before you purchase this app is that the program to provide you with custom rigntones is NOT resident on your IPhone. The way the program accomplishes this is that all of your e-mail is forwarded to a shadow server that sorts your e-mail, categorizes it, then forwards it back to you with the appropriate custom ring tone. They provide a disclaimer that they don;t keep any copies of your e-mail but the fact that my e-mail was being duplicated and forwarded was enough to make me decide that I didn't need it.
Works great!
by Ninja Mongoose on 2011/09/29 18:23
It's a little tricky to set up, (for me at least) but once it's up and running it's great. I'm a realtor and I need to be very prompt with my email replies, mailtones makes that easier
It does work, and very well
by Webcapino on 2011/09/20 12:08
Is the only comprehensive notification system I've found for the iPhone. I need to know when particular events happen and Mailtones has allowed me to identify the critical ones, even before I watch the screen. It's a tad tricky to properly set up, but that is expected for the level of customization provided

Corporate email users beware - requires copy of your emails to be sent to another email address.
by MikeRll on 2011/08/17 13:51
I wasted my money buying this app. It requires you to forward a copy of your emails to another server. If you are concerned with security and confidentiality of your emails this app may not be for you. I don't trust it and I don't use it.
Relaying

Loved this app until...
by elsw48 on 2011/08/14 16:01
I LOVED this app until emails forwarded to the Mailtones server started generating [spamcop] returned-mail messages some of which were sent back to the original senders. I had to turn off mail forwarding which, of course, renders Mailtones useless. I've tried emailing the seller but have had no response. I really depended on this app even though there were times that the notifications were delayed. In fact, just a few months ago I gave an earlier version a much higher rating. I realize that the next iOS version might make Mailtones obsolete but those of us with older phones might choose not to update. This app is still very necessary. I'm sorry to have to stop using it.

I really like this app and it's functions. But I found that it does not work all of the time. That is unacceptable.

Nice to have ringtone options for emails, but limited

It's nice to have different ringtones so I know if an email is important, but it's limited and the forwarding it tough to figure out

Could not get app to work, when my phone was " jail broke" their app worked way easier and better. Just wondering why the creators of the phone can not make one as easy!
The New Mailtones

Been happily using Mailtones for a while and had a minor problem. emailed the developer and he had it fixed on their end in less that 15 minutes. Outstanding service.

Don't waste money

Doesn't work with yahoo and even though it's stated, you have to read way down to find it. Usually after you have already bought it and it don't work.
Terrible! DO NOT BUY! DO NOT BUY! Terrible!
by frustratedinkansas on 2011/05/08 05:01
Love my new iPhone. But it has an absurd, non-adjustable ringtone for email (just one quiet beep). I often do not hear it. WHAT was Apple thinking? So I had to spend $5 on Mailtone just to get a ringtone that could be easily heard Problem? I did everything correct, and the service was activated. But after ONE new ringtone, the iPhone default tone resumed. Mailtones did not responsed to TWO emails. TERRIBLE! DO NOT BUY!
Good stuff

Waist of money
by Untaintedschizo on 2011/03/28 03:36
I shouldn't have bought this crap. It's just not safe to have to forward anything to a 3rd party server even if they promise absolute privacy ESP. If you use your mail for business. I wouldn't recommend it.
Great app
by 1cincymom on 2011/03/16 13:06
This is just what I needed. I've set it up to make the fire siren sound when I get emails from Facebook about activity I need to monitor on the fan page I manage. Works quite well!

adds push notification... but only for things I care about
by gschroder on 2009/10/05 16:10
The most useful thing about this app for me is the fact that I can set up filters for what I want to be notified about -- and have it remain silent for all other mail. I get roughly 50+ email every day... but only really want my phone to beep when: - my wife sends an email (I configured MailTones to play a 'boing' sound) - something happens on Facebook that triggers an email notification (MailTones plays a soft 'drip' sound) - a server goes down at work and I get an automated email saying that we need to get it back up ASAP (which triggers a loud 'alarm siren') ...and all other email events that I have determined as 'non-critical' are silent. And since I can customize the tone that plays for each contact or email subject, I know the nature of the incoming message without ever looking at my phone. My one request would be to add a filter setting for the 'importance' flag on an email (which would play a defined tone that would override any other custom tone). But even without that functionality, I find this app incredibly useful.
Just what I needed, with small cost
by JaimeAstin on 2010/11/15 13:32
Works perfectly well. I only use it with one if my gmail accounts... No need to go into too many details. I use the service to monitor emails from my home network and motion cameras. They emails that are actually forwarded are not too private for me to not use the service, though for me to use my business or any other email account, all service would have to be handled on my phone. Other than that, I works as it should. I have many emails from many accounts throughout the day. I am safe knowing that if there is activity at my home, I get this loud siren that is absolutely distinguishable from all other notices. I can instantly check things out. In a world where apple gives you only a few great things and the rest that are sub par when they could absolutely give you more, it is nice to have another developer step-up.
Latest Update = Perfection!
by Hease on 2010/10/06 02:39
Wow! Talk about listening to your customers! I asked for more sounds on the quiet end of the spectrum and did they deliver or what??? Literally tripled the number of sounds and I can use all in a work setting - THANKS for listening! ****************** Had to drop to two stars, expected additional sounds by now - lack of variety significantly reduces the usefulness of this app. *************** It really needs more variation in sounds, especially of the medium decibel variety. I use this to distinguish between work and personal emails (and using Google Voice, vm's and sms's ) - I really think the lack of variety significantly diminishes the value of the app. I'd give it a 3 for that reason but I don't want to hurt the sales so I hope the dev can add more sounds - they don't even need to be super high quality, just something to help distinguish between different types of emails. In terms of responsiveness for the notification, it usually comes through within a minute or less - exactly what I need, and the app is designed well too. Thanks for making such a great product.
Just works.
by JessaLu on 2014/07/10 19:01
Yes you have to forward your email however, if you are nervous about sensitive emails getting sent to a different server, create a filter that keeps them from getting forwarded (for example, any email I receive that includes the words "password reset" does not get forwarded). I've tried other apps that only do notifications from polling your inbox but they aren't as reliable. With boxcar 1 getting shut down, I needed something that would let me distinguish between email accounts and this app does it. It's a little spendy, but it works.
Works Great
by wbs65 on 2012/08/21 16:10
As an IT person, I get way too many emails each day but I do have some emails where I need to be notified.
Works great on iPod Touch
by Connie B. on 2010/01/06 21:27
MailTones now works great on an iPod Touch (2nd generation w/speaker) with Wi-Fi connection. Love it! Developer was very responsive to resetting MailTones to be compatible with an iPod Touch 2nd generation. To know when I am getting emails from students (set Subject in MailTones to my course # and students put course # at beginning of their emails to me) versus other emails is wonderful. Now I don't have to frequently check Mail to see if I have any student emails that need an immediate response. This app is well worth the $2.99 to me.
My #1 App!
by App Addict333 on 2010/06/28 19:56
I cannot imagine having an iPhone w/o this app now (I just love it that much) specially since I rely on my mail app more than my phone for contact and this allows me to know who is trying to reach me w/o having to keep grabbing my phone to open my mail app every ten minutes to see who it is trying to contact me. I also would like to say that I have had the most outstanding support from the dev when I had two small questions regarding this app. "Thank you" so much for making it!
Great product! But needs 4.0 update!!!
by Myswerveon on 2010/06/28 15:31
Love the app, works as advertised & very reliable. This little app can make your free webmail have the push notification of MS Exchange. That in itself is worth it. Personally, I need exchange for other syncing, but where this product excels is the multiple audible notifications. Yes, I wish there were more sounds, or a way to import your own sounds for alert noises, but it is a great first step in a little app that I would have paid $20 for. Keep up the development and let's get this thing more customizable (AND 4.0 COMPATIBLE) and you guys will get all 5 ratings!
This is what I have been waiting for!
by This is app is a lifesaver!! on 2009/10/01 12:57
Finally an app that lets you choose different tones for your incoming mail! I work outside, and so many times I have not been able to hear the standard mail notification sound because it is so low. This is great, and also including push notifications! I now have push notification on my gmail, and my regular work pop3 account! Doesn't get any better than this. Nice job guys on this app!
Works Perfect!
by ylleK.S on 2010/10/19 00:34
I really needed this app as a real estate agent getting emails all day long, and would like to know if they are important without even removing the phone from my pocket. It works exactly as stated. If there was one item I would change, is being I use my phone as a professional, I'd like more tones that are perhaps more professional sounding, many are, I'd just like more as I have a wide variety of clients. . Thank you for this app, I find it very helpful.
Overrated
by shebaangz on 2011/12/13 18:23
I can't complain about MailTones NOT doing what they claim.
Unreliable
by Pecos Bill on 2014/06/10 14:43
With the death of PushMail, I needed a replacement that worked the same. Last issue, if you do tap a notification, it tries to open the app then just gives you a black screen for an eternity before you finally see the app then it jumps you to Mail So if you don't care about reliability, go for it
Works like a charm
by f1zzl3b33f on 2012/09/07 21:41
At first I was a little hesitant about forwarding any emails to the developer until I realized I could use a throw away gmail address and set up my mail client to forward emails with sensitive content redacted. Furthermore, the reason we have to forward emails to the developer at all is because we have to play within Apple's walled gardens. That being said, this app works as advertised and serves an important purpose.
1.52
by I fixed 1.52 update on 2011/12/28 20:11
Just wanted all of you to know that after installing the update I couldn't get my mail tones to work either.

Excellent
by computerbandgeek on 2011/01/14 10:51
I use this app to notify me of when people send an "MMS" to my email address for free picture messaging, and I set a silent (no vibrate/sound) for everything else so it's not intrusive, but I don't have to jump to the mail app every time I get an email to see if it's important. Additionally, I have flagged certain important friends to have special sounds. Awesome! New sounds in the latest update are great. Thanks for this awesome app!
Works well for my needs. Reliable alerts.
by Beyond Vision on 2010/02/03 21:41
Overall I'm happy with this app & I'm no longer missing those important e-mails. The main things that I would like to see is manual control of each alert sound because some alerts are a little too quiet and the ability to import custom alert sounds. Other than those minor issues it is the answer to my need of hearing only the important e-mails and not the spam or unimportant ones.
Very Helpful
by seandiegocharger on 2010/06/25 16:27
I am not sure why the iphone can not manage to have diffent tones for email accounts or even better for different senders but since it does not then I am thankful for this app. The forwards come in quickly so I can respond to an inquiry from my website in minutes. Helps me to look extremely responsive! No way I could do that if I had to find those leads in with all the other emails that come in during the day!
Happy with it!
by KennyV. on 2009/10/16 00:56
I was not happy with the standard email notification and my main email provider AT&T worldnet does not push. I had no idea what was dropping in my in box and had to unlock my phone and look everytime a new email was delivered. This app does everything it claims to perfectly. I was surprised by the ability to identify emails by subject, sender and domain and that it works so well.
What a joke...
by D.R.Long on 2009/10/04 00:51
If you use Yahoo Mail, then BUYER BEWARE!!! Mail forwarding is only available to Yahoo Mail+ users. Even then, this is a useless application becaise Yahoo Mail+ takes an "all or nothing" approach to auto-forwarding your email...if you decide to use the feature, you must forward ALL of your email to a single address (i.e. your email is no longer stored on the Yahoo Mail servers). To use this application, you would have to forward all of your mail to the "@Mailtones" which would give you the push notifications and tones, but your mail would disapear into the ether forever. WASTE OF MONEY.
Nice App
by iAmYam on 2010/06/26 01:36
While I feel this should be a native feature on most phones, it is not. MailTones works great with my Exchange system and after a tweak by Electric Pocket support, Google Apps works great as well. I hope to see the ability to add you own wav files. I use email generated by my smart home system to notify me when specific events trigger... ex "The Garage door has been opened", or "The rear yard sprinkler system has been activated". I'm no Tony Stark... but I'm working on it.
Does what I need
by MizWiz35 on 2010/10/06 09:29
Exactly what I wanted, a way to hear when email from certain people arrives. Don't know why this isn't part of iOS already, but until that day I'm glad to have this. I set all other emails to silent and assigned tones to my husband, my mom, my MIL and so on. Perfect for reducing distractions. I would like more and varying tones, but works fine otherwise. And don't rate them low just because you have to forward your mail! They say so right in the description!
How do I get a refund?
by Mail Tones Is Junk on 2010/05/09 18:58
What is not clear whilst one is purchasing this is that you are required to relay your e-mail through their network. Despite the assurances of privacy, not my cup of tea. I just want a different mail sound so I may know that it is my mail, not the other guy with an iPhone at the table. Did I mention that it has not actually worked? It continually says I cannot connect to configure, try later. That is over a period of twenty-four hours thus far. Yeah, only $2.99, but why waste the money? I want mine back and I wish there was an option for a "no-star"rating.
Works great!
by smsoe on 2010/07/18 19:40
Even though I had to setup a gmail account so my yahoo mail would selectively forward to mailtones, once I did that I got the audible alert I needed when an important expected email arrived. I had an issue with gmail's verification process but mailtones customer support solved the problem immediately. I'm very pleased with the app.
A must for email use
by Dayburner on 2010/01/16 23:22
This app works exactly as advestised. Default mail alerts on iPhone were completely useless, with mailtones now not only do I know when I have a new email but if I have to read it now or wait till later. Support is very quick and helpful as well even when the prolem is on your end.
MailTones rings the bell
by joeleboy on 2009/12/09 15:30
I have been using the app for about a month and I've found I can't work with out it. Being that there's only one email sound built into the iphone that you can hardly hear when the phone is in your pocket. This app supplies a choice of sounds that you can easily hear. Easy set up
I want to love it, but it's unreliable
by BP407 on 2014/02/03 19:14
I really want to love MailTones.
I like it
by Silly fun on 2010/12/08 20:40
I am using this on my iPhone 4 and once setup it has worked as described. I have had one instance where it missed an email and one where it sent it hours late. But 99 percent of the time it has worked as I expected. I would give it a better rating if I could use custom sounds and it worked 100 percent of the time but I am satisfied overall.
Mixed review...
by Divine~Chaos on 2009/10/20 16:24
The random server is a big issue for everyone ... That needs to be addressed quickly. I only use it for a gmail account where I get random emails of little to no importance , use at own risk in that regard but the app does what it says .. I can only speak for gmail because I believe to forward mail from others u have to have a paid account to use their mail forwarding Hope they fix the security thing and add more tones for those who choose to use it ....
Mr.
by AndreSeattle on 2013/07/31 19:33
I would give this 0 stars if the option were available.

My life is complete!
by Papo on 2009/10/19 19:20
A COPY of your email is sent to mailtones so that it can INSTANTLY notify you of your email! You still get your original one! You can chose certain tone for certain contacts or even subject titles! I HATED emailed people back and forth before because i'd have to constantly refresh my inbox! Nomore!!!!!!!!!! YAY!!!!!!!!!
Good concept but somewhat of a security problem
by Brixius111 on 2009/11/20 23:02
Ok, I give this app 3 stars because of the security risk involved. That being said don't forward everything you recieve to them. I like the app because I have several automated alerts I need to know about that have no confidential info in them. I wish apple would have implemented this functionality directly into the email app instead though.

This is how identity theft starts.
do not buy this waste of your money.
by jennifer dinsmore on 2011/01/02 16:34
It does not tell you that all of your e-mail needs to be forwarded to their server for it to work , if it does actually get it to work . I could not get this to work on my i-phone with no luck , I tried everything . I tried contacting the network that makes this product 6 or 7 times with no luck , it's like they got the money and that was that . Do not buy this product !! Bad product ...bad business if you ask me !!

I don't understand why some people would rate this app low just because they did not READ THE DESCRIPTION before buying it. When you forward a copy of your mail as described, this app works perfectly. It's useful and fun! I love it.

mailtones - pager Alerts for Email and gmail
Description
mailtones gives you pager-style push email alerts and distinctive custom email sounds for your email, including custom alerts different contacts, subjects and senders.

CRAP

Works Great
by wbs65 on 2012/08/21 16:10
As an IT person, I get way too many emails each day but I do have some emails where I need to be notified.

I followed the instructions to a T

Mailtones - Waste of money
by unhappy with support on 2012/02/28 15:46
This is the worst app that I or my family had purchased for our iphones. Reported the problem to their "support" and have not received any response. That was three days ago. If you are looking at this app - look further. Will update this reveiw if I ever hear from their "support".
No Privacy

It's a tad tricky to properly set up, but that is expected for the level of customization provided

by elsw48 on 2011/08/14 16:01
I LOVED this app until emails forwarded to the Mailtones server started generating [spamcop] returned-mail messages some of which were sent back to the original senders.

Terrible! DO NOT BUY! DO NOT BUY! Terrible!
by frustratedinkansas on 2011/05/08 05:01
Love my new iPhone. TERRIBLE! DO NOT BUY!

I shouldn't have bought this crap. It's just not safe to have to forward anything to a 3rd party server even if they promise absolute privacy ESP. If you use your mail for business. I wouldn't recommend it.

adds push notification... but only for things I care about
by gschroder on 2009/10/05 16:10
The most useful thing about this app for me is the fact that I can set up filters for what I want to be notified about -- and have it remain silent for all other mail.

Just works.
by JessaLu on 2014/07/10 19:01
Yes you have to forward your email however, if you are nervous about sensitive emails getting sent to a different server, create a filter that keeps them from getting forwarded (for example, any email I receive that includes the words "password reset" does not get forwarded).
Unreliable
by Pecos Bill on 2014/06/10 14:43
With the death of PushMail, I needed a replacement that worked the same. Last issue, if you do tap a notification, it tries to open the app then just gives you a black screen for an eternity before you finally see the app then it jumps you to Mail So if you don't care about reliability, go for it
Works like a charm
by f1zzl3b33f on 2012/09/07 21:41
At first I was a little hesitant about forwarding any emails to the developer until I realized I could use a throw away gmail address and set up my mail client to forward emails with sensitive content redacted. Furthermore, the reason we have to forward emails to the developer at all is because we have to play within Apple's walled gardens. That being said, this app works as advertised and serves an important purpose.
If I could have given 0 stars, I would have.

by I fixed 1.52 update on 2011/12/28 20:11
Just wanted all of you to know that after installing the update I couldn't get my mail tones to work either.

Excellent
by computerbandgeek on 2011/01/14 10:51
I use this app to notify me of when people send an "MMS" to my email address for free picture messaging, and I set a silent (no vibrate/sound) for everything else so it's not intrusive, but I don't have to jump to the mail app every time I get an email to see if it's important. Additionally, I have flagged certain important friends to have special sounds. Awesome! New sounds in the latest update are great. Thanks for this awesome app!
I like it
by Silly fun on 2010/12/08 20:40
I am using this on my iPhone 4 and once setup it has worked as described.
Mr.
by AndreSeattle on 2013/07/31 19:33
I would give this 0 stars if the option were available.

Great idea I monitor networks my purpose of needing different tones is email from a certain account needs to get my attention. I have yet to get different tone from individual accounts as the all have same domain suffix. As all mail could have one tone ( as it does) and the other two accounts have two different tones or alerts as I need to distinguish between
I'm not forwarding my email to a stranger!

This is how identity theft starts.
do not buy this waste of your money.

Yes, I read the directions 500 times but I have no clue how to forward my mail to their address. I have mobile me and hotmail on my phone, there is no place for forwarding mail. In the default section, when I put in their forwarding address, all the other things they want me to fill out, like server or password. There is no email address to get in touch with the developers. I went on their website and it was no help & no contact info. Please help me

I don't understand why some people would rate this app low just because they did not READ THE DESCRIPTION before buying it. When you forward a copy of your mail as described, this app works perfectly. It's useful and fun! I love it.
