A Comprehensive Chess App!
by Nickydel15 on 2020/12/01 21:39
I started playing chess when I was 6 or 7 years old. The videos, the settings and the game options are really professionally done. This is one of my favorite applications.
No good. Freezes
by ratzaz57 on 2020/12/01 21:31
Don’t waste your time. Edit: Re-added as requested by Developer. Game wouldn’t let me make legit move to get out of checkmate. Much more frustrating than educational. Deleted again, of course.
Always wanted to learn
by Skylerbaird on 2020/12/01 20:31
I always wanted to play chess but i either never had the time to learn or I wouldn't have someone to play with when I had time. I really like the three minute games of this app. It's short enough that you can play well waiting for a bus or in a couple minutes of downtime. Doing this has let me see thousands of games of chess in a very short period of time. It helps you quickly learn new openings new strategies how to see the board from a new angle and play against a variety of different opponents and playing styles. To play the same amount of just games and increase my skills to where they are now would've taken me years but with this app I improve weekly. Thank you Chess.com
They’re too good

I never win everybody and their grandma’s ugly dog kept winning.
Starting As Black 3 straight. 4 out of five. Never the other way around. And always a poor excuse.
by p.g.17 on 2020/12/01 18:08
The first two games of each day are almost always as black. Today was 4 out of 5 to start the day. It’s not a “coin flip”! Why is it so hard to get that right?
App is constantly asking you to login ! Never saves user info
by Slickreview on 2020/12/01 12:35
I’ve probably created over 5 usernames and logins with this dumb app. Further I signed up for the premium service but the app never remembers who I am amd when I try to access premium features it just says login again derp derp derp. Cancelling the premium features and ditching. Fix the app! Love it otherwise!
App is amazing
by Ansonaip on 2020/12/01 11:41
This app is probably the best chess app ever!!! But when you play the puzzle games when you make a mistake it doesn’t tell you what you’re mistake was and it doesn’t tell you what you’re doing playing the puzzle games but otherwise I think this game is incredible!!!!!
I wanted to learn how to play chess
by Regine Hall on 2020/12/01 10:59
I have downloaded the app and began to watch the videos but each video only shows you about 15 secs and then BAM!!!! The remaining of the video is advertising premium chess. PREMIUM CHESS, PREMIUM CHESS PREMIUM CHESS!!!!!

Update: Deleting the App and reinstalling it from the App Store seems to have solved that stuck on starting issue. Fingers crossed that it lasts... Please fix ASAP. I have restarted the App several times, it always gets stuck at the starting Chess.com logo.

Sound Options?
by y do i need a unique nickname on 2020/12/01 00:54
Not enough option settings. There is no way to turn off the sound effects. I listen to music on my phone and I don't want to hear the sound effects of this game while I play it.
Glitches!
by AnnsleyJane on 2020/11/30 22:29
I love chess, and, in general, I really like this app, but it keeps saying “draw” when I get checkmate! It will also say “stalemate” in the beginning of games. Sometimes I think it says “stalemate” in situations where someone would normally resign instead of letting the game play through.
Recognizing success, please read my brief and honest review.
by chriscruz67 on 2020/11/30 22:20
Truly a great app because of 2 MAJOR key factors. You don’t force advertisements onto the players that don’t pay, this would drive me and many others away. The second is the overall structure to maneuver thru the app is fantastic. Tutorial videos and so much for free. This app single handedly reintroduced my interest in chess. People need promotions and recognition for such a successful and well thought-out app. Truly a marvel.
Good but Buggy
by swsail on 2020/11/30 22:16
This is generally a well designed app with nice features, but I’ve found that it often loses games I have in progress against the computer when I switch apps and come back to it. I come back to find the menu with options to start a new game or puzzle, with no sign of the game I was already playing. Super frustrating.
Simply the best chess app
by UNC_DAD on 2020/11/30 20:23
I love how well designed this app, it’s ease of use and the stability on all platforms. From novice to expert, there is something for everybody in this app. I particularly like the plethora of trainings available, from puzzles to thematic trainings to the videos from GMS and IMs. I was so impressed that I started a diamond membership just to support the effort by that has gone into this app. Well done, I am a daily user of this app, offering endless joy and endless opportunities for every chess player.

Great Online Chess!
by gmbigb on 2020/11/30 14:23
Best Free online live chess that I’ve have found. Does have payable account for classes, etc. Only 3 stars because - has flaws to aid cheaters, time delays that benefit them, disconnects that happen in the app, aborted games after 2 moves. Also has the ability to block players, I have played players that I have blocked. Needs a time limit on rematch offers, some players never decline or accept. Shouldn’t take longer than 5 seconds to decide. This would eliminate a lot of troll players. And still blocked players can still challenge you.

Messed up
by ev-lilbird on 2020/11/30 00:02
It was alright in the beginning but gets worse with the app bugs. I won 2 games and yet lost points and now it just reduced 10 points saying I abandoned the game, how do you abandon the game. This is ridiculous and frustrating!! What’s the point of playing if it’s infuriating!!!
Password reset doesn’t work
by jm9239 on 2020/11/29 23:52
App and system are complete trash. The password reset / login help doesn’t work. No email is ever sent to help reset, and nobody responds when you send them an email. A total joke for an app with this many downloads and a user base this large. AVOID.

Glitches and Stalemates (with computers)
by Bolton110 on 2020/11/29 18:57
I really enjoy the app, but it has its problems. LIST OF GLITCHES (so far..) 1) I’ve experienced glitches where I move a pawn two spaces (at the beginning) and it registers one so the computer can take them. Ridiculous. 2) You cannot attach screenshots or recordings for the “Help” feature when contacting support. So it’s hard to contact them and defend what’s happening. STALEMATES ...why is there no way for the opponent to concede? The computers play until the death. I’ve had computers pinned numerous times, but they force a stalemate so I don’t win. I would like a feature (in the Intermediate and above computers) where the bot will ask for a draw or concede defeat. Like professional chess players do. No one worth a salt pushes to the end to force a draw. That’s just trashy.
Almost perfect

Enjoying everything and been using it regularly for about two weeks. Plenty of useful features. Interface is good and clean. It works well going between iPhone, iPad, and PC. Tons of features. Haven’t ran into any bugs or glitches yet. Just satisfying experience this far.
Really Enjoy
by RNolter on 2020/11/29 12:23
One of my fears is losing my mind’s sharpness as I grow older. Chess is one of the tools I’m using to help keep sharp. Using this app daily is definitely helping. I really like the daily chess where you have 24 hours to move. Life can go on and I can still play my son who’s in college a nice game. I solved my first puzzle yesterday and felt on top of the world! I even watched the Skilling tournament yesterday from the app. So yes this app is awesome and very flexible for anyone’s liking. Highly recommend it.

Customer Support Non-Existent
by Dzz74 on 2020/11/29 03:29
Overall was pretty happy with the app playing on the iPhone and even upgraded to the $99 per year subscription. Then when logged in through my iPad it forced me to create a new account through Facebook. I then lost all my game history as well as the $99 purchase. I’ve emailed customer support through the app as well as by email for nearly a week and still never heard back. Very disappointing and frustrating. Not to mention the $99.
Great App
by lruda on 2020/11/29 02:24
As a player that likes chess but isn’t very good I really enjoy this app because you can watch lessons. Lots of features that are available to get to know the game better. I am using the free version and have no complaints so far. Keep up the good work guys and when I can afford it I will upgrade! As a side note the puzzles are a great way to get better, helps me see the board better.
Play and play and ?
by dna level c on 2020/11/29 02:07
If you just want to play and play it’s good. If you wonder if it’s even possible to get better at chess no matter how much you play this will dig that dark hole deeper. I can beat the computer player rated at 1800, then get beat by human opponents who are rated 800. I’ve completed nearly all of the lessons and tutoring and yet... If you enjoy playing and playing it’s good, but if you are expecting to actually get noticeably better you may be disappointed.
New Computer opponents are a nice touch
by fx4d on 2020/11/29 01:28
The app does a good job and sometimes better of representing the chess.com experience. It’s gotten even better with the new computer opponents.

Let’s be honest, we all want to be Beth Harmon– the woman is one of the few good things to come out of 2020. The platform is user friendly and helps you step up your game by having the option of having an assist– which tells you the best moves to make. Looking forward to playing more.

Don't trust the "time remaining"
by NickMeeksReviews on 2020/11/27 17:54
Just downloaded this game and had won all the games I had played and increased my ranking. I was ahead and about to win a game I had invested almost a week playing with "5 minutes left to move"...when I went to move my piece it wouldn't let me. I tried repeatedly and kept getting an error. I rebooted the app and it said my opponent won due to time. They need to either give a minute by minute countdown last 5 minutes, or give the option to extend the game if both agree.

Life changing
by Condor s on 2020/11/27 06:29
Chess.com was a life changing discovery for me. I wish I would have been introduced to chess in my adolescence. I feel like I would have been a completely different person. Fantastic platform. Definitely recommend the membership since it gives you highlights of your completed games which is very helpful for beginners. Also their non mobile version is fantastic! So many different types of games! My personal favorite is 4 player chess!

by Kyle James Russell on 2020/11/27 00:34
I haven’t even been able to dive into all the extras because the basic gameplay is so addictive. Would be 5 but there is a connective issue sometimes that slowest the game down and even cost me a lost from disconnection.
Fantastic Application Highly Recommended!

Timed games
by m.cardenas4 on 2020/11/26 22:38
When playing a timed game my time is depleted immensely when it switches back to me. I’ve reloaded, downloaded, changed servers and still the issue persists. Even when I pre select the move in anticipation I still show as if I have taken longer to move. Otherwise a 5 star rating. Everything else works just fine ie lessons, puzzles, etc. Of coarse the main purpose of the game is to enjoy playing which I can’t when I loose due to time even when I have clearly won the match.

Best chess app in existence.
by J-Man111 on 2020/11/26 15:07
Hands down the single best chess app. I use their website as well when playing on my laptop. I only have two gripes that I’d like them to address. - Give the daily chess option a front and center button in the New Game tab. It was so confusing to figure out how to get a game going since the setting is buried. - Give the Apple Watch app some functionality. I would at minimum like to be able to respond to moves on my watch. I run a lot with my watch and will think of moves and once I come up with my move I’d like to be able to simply make that move quickly on my watch. Love the work you guys are doing at chess.com! Keep up the good work.

by skshebejeks on 2020/11/25 22:48
One of the best chess games ever my older sister knows how to play chess, and when our chess board is missing we just hop on this game and start playing with each other. I’m not the best chess player so I’m glad there’s lessons and stuff! My mom just started playing chess and she’s learning on the app with the lessons and playing with the computer she’s learning and she’s getting kinda good! Also you have your own number mines close to a 600 when I’m writing this. You can play with other people and you can choose your time limit!! Just gonna say thank you so much for making this game it’s the best I love chess! Checkmate!

Functionality
by TrishInHouston on 2020/11/25 13:09
This game seems to ‘direct’ pieces to squares the player does not intend and specifically when it matters the most. It’s creepy. Important moves get ‘re-directed’. It’s unfortunate. The game could be fun but the ‘glitches’ make it frustrating - causing many more moves before a win can be effected.

Checkmate!
by Shocktop32 on 2018/04/05 00:10
I’ve been using this Chess app for about three or four years. It has a lot of additional features like tactics puzzles, videos, and preset predicaments to challenge you and help you set up future moves to create the best situation for your pieces. There is also a play-by-play review of your games which critiques your moves and tells you what you could’ve done better. A couple things that need improvement though. Often the app will fail to notify me when it’s my turn after my opponent has moved, requiring me to open the app and navigate to my active games to manually check if it is my turn. The other issue is that sometimes I will try to start a new game with a friend with the “Play A Friend” option and the app opens the “active connection countdown” when I’m not trying to play a live game. I’m sure there is a way to create a new game with a friend without creating an active challenge, but I am not sure how. If this feature exists, it just needs to be integrated in an easy to find menu. (This review is based on my use from a Samsung Galaxy S5). EDIT: I have an iPhone X now and I am able to successfully use the “Play A Friend” option to create a daily game without the app opening the “Active Connection Countdown” so the issue I stated previously may already be resolved.
BEST CHESS EVER!!!!
by Knightsrgr8 on 2018/05/23 03:42
I had started playing chess around three years ago, but stopped playing after a while because me sister wouldn’t have time for it anymore. I also didn’t know all the weird stuff or the stuff that is secluded, like castling, stalemate and the difference between check and checkmate. And so I gave up on chess. But three years later, in 7th grade we had a chess tournament in our contest math class. I was very unpleased and upset to have found out that I lost in the second round! I watched the finals match, and watched one of my good friends get bashed and checkmated in around five to six maybe seven minutes. At that moment, I wanted to be like that guy who defeated my friend so badly. So I started forcing my sister to play chess with me. But however at one point she got tired of it. So then I had to find a good chess app or website to play on. After lots of asking people what the best chess apps are, I finally got this one!!! And I must say I love it! There is however, a minor issue. I found out there is now multiplayer! The other player must have an account and you have to invite them. Anyway, other than that, it’s all cool!!!
Social upgrade & Design simplification (NEEDED)
by Good boogaloo woolly on 2017/12/09 21:07
I want to offer simple design improvements that would engage users to a whole other level. This is so far a chess app / website that allows you to just play chess but severely lacks an actual chess community to the degree in which I see its potential. We want to find professional players / engage and keep up with chess news. People don’t want to read articles that’s boring. When I go to a professional chess players page all I see is comment spam from random people and no actual comments or video updates from the chess player them self. It needs to have Facebook comment design prioritizing the users comments at the top and then the most like comments after. They should also be able to add photos that could be commented on and liked. Secondly there are SO MANY sections that are not grouped up accordingly. People love simplicity. There should be a (Play) (Learn) (Watch) (News). Instead, all the categories that should be located inside each drop box are scattered outside these categories and are extremely ugly and overwhelming. Besides that to somehow promote twitch engagement would be huge and lastly, getting borders for your advertisements would help you look like s more high quality website. I just love chess so much and this app. I want this app to be successful and the chess community to grow.
Perfect?!
by D000M on 2018/08/06 14:13
This chess app is amazing and feels like it has everything you can possibly need. The chess AI can play at an extremely high level when you want it to and Ive learned many things from the AI! Also the live matchmaking system has a wide variety of options you can choose from, my favorite being the 10 minute matches because they are quick and fun, and it matches you up with other players in mere seconds. I would recommend this app to any chess player, whether it be just starting out or a great player because the matchmaking will set you up against opponents of equal skill level and the AI can be set to any rating as well. For beginners there are videos and a bunch of resources available to help you to become a great chess player as well! One last thing I want to point out is that the developers are phenomenal, they are quick to address any problems you may have and really care about the app and want it to be the best it can be. If you have problems or concerns I would highly suggest trying to reach out to them!
Wonderful App For Beginners
by I can't think ofa nickname on 2018/09/26 02:36
Having known not much more than the basic rules, I find this app extremely helpful in helping me understand different moves and tactics. I now win almost all of my friendly games and I also compete in some casual tournaments in my community. Most of my more advanced learning has come through this app, and it’s super handy. It gets your through the very basics quickly and brings you right in to the good stuff. That, along with some of the daily puzzles, offer a new experience every day. I do not use premium but it seems that it would be worth it. You get so many more puzzles, which is one of the best way to master your moves and analysis of the game. The videos and streams are also convenient and not too bulky and very user friendly; the chess teachers are welcoming to viewers and keep a lively environment to keep me from getting bored. I can easily spend 20-30 minutes a day or more without ever getting bored or tired of it. A fantastic app all around, free or paid.
Wonderful app for getting one into the game.

I have played around with Chess apps for years. This is the first one that actually gets me going and keeps me coming back. I have bought the diamond level and find it fascinating!!!! I am 61 years old and have never developed a “3 to 4 steps ahead” thinking style. This app is the real deal and is played by some really smart people. I believe it has all of the tools that I need to keep my mind sharp as I enter my senior citizen years!😁 An almost perfect app and I don’t give five stars unless I LOVE an app. (note to developers: there is a fatal bug in the puzzles/learning/puzzles missed section. When you get done with all of the “missed puzzles”, the app goes back to a starting position and then goes back to the home screen. I am using the latest version of the iOS. This has not been a big deal for me because I just start the app up again and it works perfectly but I thought for the sake of tidying up loose ends you might want to look at it. 😊)
Great app, would add one thing though
by MightBeDeadByNowMightNot on 2020/04/21 02:17
I’ve never really played chess and am very bad at it, but this is a good application if you are looking to learn. It has lessons (some free ones to learn how the pieces move and paid ones that I haven’t looked at as it is a little too pricey) and you are able to select how long you want the game to be. One problem I continually have is running out of time during the games. Though this is clearly my problem and not the application’s, I’ve also been in quite a few games where my opponent has also not been keeping an eye on the clock and time just expires. I suggest adding a vibration, similar to the standard vibration from moving a piece when certain time intervals are reached such as every minute. I would add this to the settings if there is worry many users would not like this change. Anyways, love the app, great job to those who created and maintain it. Take care to anyone who reads this review.
Play, learn, practice, be amused
by DMGoncalves on 2017/11/27 20:22
Excellent game play, game management, & much more. Post game analysis ranks each move “excellent/good/inaccuracy/blunder” and identifies what the better move would have been. Track your stats separately different game speeds, and accrue virtual ratings in the lessons and tactics drills. Pick up live timed games instantly, or play “daily” chess with days or weeks to make a move. I Love the daily tactics puzzles. Excellent interactive lessons and drills (e.g. practice every variety of limited-material mate). Watch other games live... easy to peek in on a friend’s games. GM video lectures and other curated material offer solid insights. Regular shows like “Chess Brahs” always a good time. No other chess app comes close to this. Unlimited game play for free; all other main features available in reasonable quantities for free, more than enough to keep a casual player occupied. I upgraded just to get more daily tactics puzzles, and got deeper analysis tools I’m still learning about.
Overall ok
by Tintin 2011 on 2020/04/17 18:40
For the most part, this is OK. I do enjoy the daily puzzles, however sometimes they are just flat out wrong. I would say about one out of every 10 puzzle (recently more) is the wrong solution, and it is frustrating to lose points when you know that the recommended move is so obviously not the right move. Additionally, the hint button is absolutely useless. If I just accidentally touch it even though I didn’t mean to, I immediately lose all the points. What is the point of having a hint option if I can just as well make the wrong move and lose just as many points? Since using the hint provides partial solution, doesn’t it make sense that only partial points are lost? I would also recommend to the developers to add a confirmation prompt to the hint button to avoid these accidental frustrations. I had considered signing up for the paid version of the app, but these glitches have stopped me from doing so. These are all minor fixes to make a very good and capable app even better. I really hope the developers take this feedback seriously and consider improving their app.
A great alternative game site when your friends are to busy.
by Gordo Tech on 2017/10/14 13:12
I enjoy playing blitz and rapid chess games with this App. I find it a wonderful source of spacial cognitive ability enhancement. The news and articles by Peter Doggers are well written and timely. You play against chess players from many different countries. The tactics training is fun and if you upgrade you receive extra features. Lessons are available and charts and statistics show your progress. I play tournament chess at the West Valley Chess Club. Our members use computers to train and analyse the games. By playing many bullet games Online games I was able to achieve the 1st place of the Chaba Mehes memorial tournament. My ability to calculate quickly helped me defeat my rivals. Developing an opening strategy with online chess is another benefit. You can pick your favorite player and watch live games. Whether you are an amateur or considering becoming a professional, this App will be a great resource.
Join-to-Play Ware / Bug Ridden with No Report Options
by AverageUser89 on 2020/02/13 22:03
This is basically a “join our site/email spam generator” app that has almost everything hidden behind a join/pay wall. What a joke. Why would exercises, puzzles, game modes, etc. _need_ me to join some random site and get spammed with emails from, in order to function? Hint: it does not. This is basically a mailing subscription grabber that is likely to sell your email and/or spam you. The UI also very frustrating as well seeing how this is not a native app and looks like a web wrapper for their site. The app has loads of bugs and many still exist in the app with no way to report them to the developers and they have such a convoluted UI that doesn’t offer any help for looking where to even report the bugs. The best bug I came across was it just allowing pawns to move diagonally without capturing a piece (a basic rule and requirement that should never have been a bug in the first place). This is such a low quality, cheap e-mail grabber app that put no effort into actually designing a high quality, bug free chess app but rather a dirty “register to use” model for a website-as-an-app loaded with bugs. Horrible.
Overall, an Amazing App
by "Top Pedator" on 2020/09/19 14:49
I want to start off by saying that I love this app. I have been using it for more than a year now and I must say that out of the apps that I have on my phone currently, this app is probably the one I have used the most, and will stay on my phone for many years to come. There are many cool features, most of which I use. There is anything from tactical puzzles to dazzle and baffle your mind and make you become a player, to daily puzzles and tournaments you can join. However, there is one thing that I would add. On the website, you can join or leave clubs as you please, but the app itself won’t let you unless it prompts you with it. I found this really annoying when I spent over half an hour trying to figure out and look up how to leave a club that I lost interest in. If you could please add this, then it would be much easier. Overall, an amazing app.
This App is rigged
by ifixici on 2020/07/02 15:45
This App is rigged beyond repair. All I’m trying to do is play a game of Chess and improve my game. However, is App is doing anything and everything in its power to prevent me from doing so. Everything from the scoring system to who you play and what you can do within the app is completely manipulated and designed to keep you from acquiring point. For example, I just lose 10 points for trying to abort a game against someone who had 100 points less than me??? And the other day I lost 12 points for trying to abort a game with someone who had 200 points than me??? This doesn’t make any sense. Because I know that if I lose against someone with 100 points less then me then I lose a lot more points. I love the idea of being able to play against people from all over the world but all the games that this app plays and all the ways it tries to keep you from improving is just absolute rubbish.
App needs help
by mxdfp on 2019/04/06 00:17
Grandmasters play each other on this app so it must be very good or they are being compensated for using it. However there is no manual informing someone how to use the app. For instance, the app gives you a rating of 1400 for a variety of different types of chess formats even though you have never played these formats since the app doesn’t describe how one would engage that facility on the app. The Lessons are helpful but have misleading explanations that do more to direct you to the wrong answer than teach you. The app’s Puzzles are challenging but there are other longer “solutions” to the puzzles that you will not be credited with. Plus, you have to solve perhaps six puzzles to make up for one misstep since you earn much less for a solution than you get docked for a failure to solve. It’s like treading water; you never get anywhere. A few solutions require that the losing side of the board make a bonehead move. Therefore I mostly use this app to play against the computer that can be adjusted to various levels of competency.
Great app to improve your chess skills and enjoy playing anytime.
by D4bob on 2019/05/23 12:59
Overall, excellent app to hone your skills, learn new material, practice against the computer in a game or doing training drills while the best feature remains playing fellow human players worldwide any time you want to play. There are some issues with interrupted connections and I am unsure how abandoned game forfeitures work. Sometimes my opponent appears to leave a game and I have to wait for all the time to run out for the game to end and other times when a message says “”Opponent name” with lose by abandonment in X minutes”. How the program determines how many minutes to reconnect without forfeiture is unclear. Also, the ability to suspend a game by mutual agreement to resume at some point set by GMT would be a welcomed enhancement. There are far fewer session control freeze ups or games disconnected issues than a few years ago. Still, great site and app. Highly recommend.
The reason why you going to end up getting this app.
by TonyTalentedTongue on 2020/03/15 07:47
Love it, simply the best option. It’s free, it’s simple and easy to navigate-VERY user friendly! Your exposed to and have a wealth of knowledge and real world experience playing other players from the introductory rated player to the 1300 level serious amateurs to the guys well above that that obviously didn’t get there by accident. Also, it’s FREE! A analysis is offered that literally makes every game that you play a valuable learning experience, bc we don’t learn as much with our successes as we do with our failures and that transforms your failure and with a little effort and consistent practice it becomes the source of your strength.., I love this app and their is no comparison I’ve probably spent more hours logged in on this app then all the hours on all the other apps combined and if you took that by two I’d still have more time spent playing chess on this app! 🤯lol
A fantastic app for all chess levels.
by Mcblahflooper on 2017/10/15 18:51
As both a programmer and a novice chess player, I can testify a lot of work, and a lot of love, went into this app. A lot of chess apps have the same run of the mill features: play vs. a computer at various skill levels or play online and receive a score that will increase or decrease based on your win ratio. This is fine, but this app decided to go much further. I have never been in a chess club or received lessons, but I’ve always wanted to be a good chess player. You can learn a lot by playing the game a bunch online or against a computer, but you won’t really learn tactics, how to properly set up a board, and everything else one needs to know to excel at the game. This app teaches you all of that and more. They have an advanced version, but I’m doing fine with the free version. I’ve already noticed that my ability to strategize and develop my pieces has increased quite a bit. Chess has became less of a game where I figure it out move by move, but finally something that I can think out and consider. I attribute that all to this app’s lessons. If you’re a beginner looking to develop your skills, or an advanced player looking to brush up on lessons, or a master looking to have fun online, you’ll be able to do all of those things here. I wish app development was typically this good. 10/10
Chess lover
by Brassboot on 2019/03/21 02:35
I have this software on my desktop, so I thought it would be a mobile version of it. It doesn't allow you to play live game of chess. Only the slow movement which is okay but I was thinking of instant respond from my opponent. Beside from that it's a good program to have. I am updating this review: I have the mobile version on both my iPad and iPod! I play chess at several website but this site is the best. Now with the mobile, I am not tired to my desk top. I can view the videos and play with the chess tactics. If you are a chess hobbyist than this the mobile Apps you should consider. This not a paid endorsement! Update They have improved this AP greatly. I am no longer stuck at my desktop. The upgrades have been the greatest, every upgrades have come more enjoyment! In fact I just purchased a new iPod so I could see the new upgrade. If you really like to play chess and don't want to be stuck to you laptop or desktop then this the AP you should want! Just got the latest upgrade for AP and I got to say this maybe the best since I been playing at this site. I think my game may improve with this new upgrade. The analysis is something I think I'll use a lot in the future. Chess lover, you might not be disappointed in this upgrade.
Bring back old lessons
by BenHalyo on 2020/06/17 07:42
I’ve noticed that the old lessons have been added to the mastery lessons. I’m glad that they’ve come back in some form since I find them quite useful. However, many of them don’t make sense in the mastery lessons categories since they are very elementary. I still feel it would be good to have them in a category of their own to make it easier to discern which lessons are at mastery level and which are in the format of the old lessons. With that said, I enjoy the app and the content contained. ———— I have enjoyed using this chess app so much that I upgraded to diamond membership. In a recent update, they removed the “old lessons” from the app though they remain in the web browser. The old lessons were great bite sized exercises with good tips. It is very frustrating that my favorite feature of the app has been removed recently after I payed for an upgrade to use it. It is clumsy to try to do the old lessons on my phone’s web browser when it worked so well in the app. I can’t understand why they removed this feature. I will not be continuing my diamond membership if this does not come back. I also like the new lessons, but sometimes I don’t have 15 mins to watch the video and do the exercises or else I want to do a short lesson without volume. The old lessons serve a different purpose and there is no reason to make them unavailable.
Mostly positive
by Prutz on 2019/05/01 16:56
This app is stellar! Usually downloading a free app grants you 1-2 options and makes you pay for the rest but not this app. Half of everything is open without pay. These features are also not bad they are clearly there to teach not to encourage you to spend money. There is more content here than mostly console games offer today and that is a pleasant surprise. There are some problems like how hard the UI is to navigate, it is like a maze with so many sub menus it’s angering but that’s a small nit pick. Another issue is the Custom games, which really aren’t customizable. I have only been able to move the pawns up one rank and switch out the rooks with bishops. Everything else I do reads the same message of “invalid position” it is so frustrating to want to play something fun and unique only to be stopped because it isn’t what the game wants. This needs to be improved but with the overall quality of the game I’m okay with some small issues.
Long time user, always enjoyed!
by Argembarger on 2018/07/18 00:49
Upgraded to be a premium user (platinum) after being a free user for years, and have always been very satisfied overall. Seen lots of bug fixes over time, which is great. Enjoyed watching the development of new strategies of catching and punishing cheaters. I’ve had fun with the community and am now an admin of a chess group. If you enjoy chess, this is one of the slickest websites out there. The app is very good, but disappoints slightly—I wish there was a bit more done to round out some of the edges, such as more/better functionality for groups/administration and forums, and I wish *regularly* for the conditional move system. You can always visit the desktop website for that stuff, but I miss it a lot on mobile and I can’t fully bring myself to give five stars until at least that stuff is in. (Glad it doesn’t appear to be interrupting my music/podcasts anymore!)
It’s good but can be much better and easier to use
by matthewmaximus on 2018/08/29 20:48
This game is awesome but the menu is ever so complicated, it’s not so simple as to have sub categories so simple like singleplayer, multiplayer, options, etc, and the fact that you can’t leave an online game is silly. Also if my opponent leaves, why does it still act as if they’re in the game and their timer is still counting? As soon as they leave or close the app, give the other player the win and that’s it. Why should one wait until the resignation timer finishes just because your opponent left the game? It’s absurd. Please make the menu simple and not complicated. It needs an overhaul. Also I did something in the menu by accident and now I don’t know how to set the settings back so I can play against the A.I, it’s set to two player multiplayer on the same phone when I select “computer” lol and I don’t know how to revert back. Fix the menu please, and make it simple and not complicated.
Newbie on the learning curve
by AustinTaos on 2018/04/15 20:06
I love the website. The app is also very well done. I'm currently working my way thru Tactics, Lessons and such. Lots, and I mean lots of these to practice and use, the most part very fun and can be challenging if you stray too far afield. I'm very happy learning this way as opposed to books, which suffer from too many alternative lines sometimes to keep track of where you are. One suggestion would be to add a second less cryptic hint along the lines of why the example is in front of you, like "see any pins?" For Tactics training. If you're looking for an app-website combination to spend your time and bucks on, you can't go wrong here. Others have offered different suggestions for improvement of the app, but almost all are in the supportive "keep it up" mode, which mine is. I'd give it five stars, but I want the developers to read my suggestion Your move!
Great App!
by Baka Juice on 2017/11/19 00:06
UPDATED REVIEW: Was having issues with the app before the latest update, but it’s working great now! Love the app, best way to play chess on a mobile platform bar none. Love the layout and it has all of the functions you’d look for in a chess app including the ability to look back through your previous moves and analyze entire games for move quality. My only issue is that I’m not receiving push notifications from the app anymore, so I have to manually check back for updates. Not ideal, but I’m sure this will be fixed soon. Will give 5 star as soon as this is fixed. OLD REVIEW: All I see is white, can’t log in or view my games in the app, I’m resigned to playing through the browser until this issue is fixed. I’d just got the app on my iPhone 7 and it was working great. Seems like it’s just a comparability issues. Will update my review when it’s fixed.
Documented checkmates
by landslide07 on 2018/04/19 02:39
This is the best chess app out there hands down. I wish the tournaments were not strictly 2 min speed chess, but the live games are awesome. You can create a live game challenge, set-up your preferred timer, and immediately be playing anyone across the planet. If that challenger leaves the game, they have a limited amount of time before they auto-resign and you win points on your rating, and they loose points on theirs. The fact that chess players care so much about their ratings keeps abandonment low. Also these games are logged and can be reviewed at any time. My brother and I have a legendary rivalry in chess, and the fact that I can have documented checkmates on him is priceless. There are additionally many different tools to help you get better, such as lessons, tactics, puzzles, and drills. All of those tools are fantastic.
Great but...
by Shonkey on 2018/11/15 04:26
Love the app. Especially the fact it has different modes. I end up mostly playing the 960 variant. My only issue is the app for some reason will randomly log me out. Then when I try to log back in through the Facebook login (where I originally started playing this) the app says “couldn’t log in. We are unable to create your account. Please contact support to resolve this issue”. It’s behaving as though I’m trying to create an account despite my hitting the “sign in” button. Then for some reason doesn’t recognize my Facebook account or that I’m logged into Facebook. I can access from my desktop with no issues. But this continues to happen at random and gets frustrating. Especially when I have timed games waiting for my move that then are forfeited because of no move being made by me. Would be a solid 5 star if not for this issue.
Play it all the time, some issues tho.
by D_Battery. on 2018/07/13 01:05
This game is absolutely amazing, the game design and response is what I've been looking for in a chess app for a long time. I play it all the time when I’m bored and play hours at a time. However, there are some issues. First, if you switch up the game options or go into some of the modes the game will crash and do so repeatedly till you have to reinstall the app all together. Second, don’t try to do the Threefold Repetition move on the computer in-order to call a draw, for whatever reason the game does not register this as a legitimate move, I use this move all the time when facing someone stronger in chess competitions in order for them to not beat me but instead draw. For now ill just say its a draw and restart the game but Its not as satisfying. Other than those two points ill def keep this app and continue to play it almost daily.
CHESS: Play and Learn
by Froggy Pants 73 on 2017/11/24 06:56
This is a great app for anyone who loves chess, and wants to play a better game. The lessons are both written and/or visual, catering to multiple learning styles. Multiple videos, produced and narrated by Master players, explain the common to Master level openings and strategic play, including defensive moves. This app will help the beginner improve their play, and keep the hopeful Master satisfied with blitz games, the analysis of historic battles, news stories, and more. If you want to learn to play, or are looking for more partners, at whatever level you play, this is the best chess app I’ve seen. If you love the game, if you can afford an upgraded version, buy it. Stop looking at other sites. Don't waste your time. The learning opportunities are varied and entertaining, features too many to mention. A range of world wide players, both in skill and technique, will challenge and introduce you to different ways to play. Wish I had had this when I first learned to play! The Diamond upgrade with access to all teaching courses, would be a great gift for the young player who is not challenged enough by his/her peers, and wants to learn the tactics and strategies used by the old GrandMasters! As I've said, great app., spendy. EzraKeyWest
Versus Computer Crash
by Superduper_Cereal on 2018/07/19 15:13
Generally speaking great app, typically consistent and fun. However, as of a day or two ago the app began crashing randomly during versus computer play. Make a move and the app crashes, then when trying to re-enter that game the app crashes. All other features and options seem functional, it only crashes when attempting to access ‘computer’ options (tried from different menu options). I have uninstalled and reinstalled the app and it fixed temporarily, but the base problem has persisted. I likely will not continue to uninstall and reinstall the app to compensate for the faulty programming. Please fix soon so I and others don’t have to ditch. Current rating related to current issue. *Issue appears to fixed. Thank you.
Lots more than a simple app
by Poe10:) on 2017/12/29 23:40
Very good chess app with lots of lessons, links to videos, and a free registration to join online activity and compete head-to-head or in tourneys. One problem I’ve encountered is that, as an inexperienced player, I’ve studied some videos and completed several lessons through the app. This has allowed me to handily beat the computer on Level One. I moved up to Level 2, and you’d think I moved up to Level 5 or 6. The game went from making many mistakes and blunders, to almost none, and trapping me in almost every move. Even using hints often results in a “mistake” move. I’ve gone from beating the computer easily and quickly to being trapped and beaten soundly, just by advancing one level. It’s not even a challenge because I’m simply biding my time to Checkmate halfway into the game. I’m also confused by some of the lessons. In some of them, you are given a scenario and have to choose the best option. Some of the “correct” options make no sense to me, but there’s no explanation as to WHY they are the best option. Example: One scenario had me taking a Knight with a Bishop, only to have my piece taken by the opponent’s bishop. With no explanation, it teaches me nothing. Still, the app offers a lot of lessons and info for free, including online games.
Almost
by dwmillerphd on 2020/10/22 01:29
I very much want to love this app. With a beautiful design and wealth of features and content, it leaves its competitors in the dust in almost every respect, more than enough to justify the subscription-based pricing model. But from my point of view as a relative beginner, there is one missing feature that I just can’t get over. I want to be able to play against the computer and then save the game for later review and analysis. This seems to be a common feature in other apps, but is mysteriously missing from this one. Searches on various online forums suggests that the save option is available only when playing against another person. I find this mystifying and disappointing. Please, please let me know if I’ve overlooked something here. I would like my search for the one-and-only chess app to end right here, and I feel like I am excruciatingly close!
Really good app but laggy lately
by amaturendgame on 2020/11/09 06:12
I’m been using this app for a number of years but with all the new players on the site the lag spikes have been getting on my nerves as I play 1 minute chess a lot. Sometimes I’ll lose over 100 rating points due to server lag where I’ll have 5 seconds left and it’ll auto end the match. Or my opponent will somehow have 20+ seconds on me even when I make instant moves for the entire match including premoves. Kind of annoying... actually really annoying but I guess that’s just a side effect of, “The queens gambit” tv show being a huge success and the recent massive exposure that Hikaru and other big chess streamers have had with bringing new players to the community. Oh well. Still giving it five stars.
Random disconnections, flawed abandonments
by LuviPhone7 on 2020/08/19 14:51
There are so many obvious flaws that the developer is not fixing knowingly. Firstly, if the other player is not making a move for more than a minute and you go to check your message for few seconds, you lose the game immediately by abandonment! And if there are 5 or more minutes remaining in the game and the other player knows that he will be checkmated in a few moves, he doesn’t make a move at all and you keep waiting forever holding your phone and keeping the app open. The other player hopes that you start checking your emails and then you will be declared loser by abandonment! Why can’t they simply fix this flaw? Can’t their engine detect the other player has already lost the game and is not making a move taking advantage of the known flaws in the app? And oh other than that there are random disconnections in the app and even though you are winning the game, you lose it in a matter of few seconds of disconnection.
Terrible Update...
by Maxpaws on 2019/03/18 23:37
After at least a year working well and predictably, they redesigned the layout for no good reason. They added ridiculous sound effects that make you think you're playing a kid’s game. They changed “Tactics” to “Puzzles” to further make you think you’re playing some kid’s game. Then they broke the Tactics altogether by just stopping the game completely if you make a mistake on the last Tactic instead of letting you try and finish it correctly. I also tried to replay a tactic move and that tactic closed and started a different one without letting me try and understand my error. Terrible. This kind of “update” shows poor quality control, and a total disconnect with what users want. There are much better chess games out there. I’m dumping this one. EDIT: Okay, I didn’t dump it, and in fact use the app every week. My review was in reaction to that last redesign update, but the game itself works pretty well.
Best chess app ever!!!!!!!!!!!!!
by Sa3ad.G on 2019/12/28 17:44
I really love this app because my dad has a chess board and I really love playing with him but I can’t do it all the time so I downloaded this app so I can play whenever I want to and I can learn more skills with the lessons and beat my dad easily. I really love the Solo Chess mode and I love that you can change backgrounds and chess board styles and color. I love the puzzles and daily puzzle. Thank you so much! I have some ideas to make it even better! First you could give difficultly levels for the puzzles, and second you could mix backgrounds and even put different backgrounds each day! You could put a timer for the chess games and Solo Chess and make different apps for checkers, coding, art, and more. Keep up the great work!
Very good platform.
by 1genericman on 2019/01/10 10:29
One can always find someone to play with at any time of the days. There is some room for improvement in how it displays analysis. It would be better if the analysis could be paused at reviewed move by move. Maybe that is a feature in the premium version but I would not know. Also, I have found that some players stall and take a very long time to make a move. Some others are quite hostile and insult their opponents through the in game chat. While both problems can be reported to the platform, I am not quite sure if they are punished accordingly. I realize it would be very hard to monitor all games especially on a free platform. Problem is, when one does face an abusive opponent, one must forfeit (and lose) that particular game to part ways. Overall good app.
Bug in the app
by Babajun2019 on 2018/07/12 01:10
I have been using the app for many years now. but lately I have been having variety of issues with the app. In the beginning I simply turned my iPad off and on again, but now this turning on and off trick doesn’t work anymore. I have deleted the app and installed it back again. This trick worked for playing only one game, and I couldn’t play any more of the daily games either. Very much irritating situation. I reported the problem, but their tech advice was exactly what I knew and what I did, meaning deleting the app and reinstalling it. So I am not happy with the app. This is the only app on my I pad that I have these issues with. This means the app has a bug that needs to be fixed.
Needs a lot of work
by BPZero on 2018/08/07 00:22
Every time I reported issues, the support team got back to me and tried helping in any way they could. However, the issues with the app itself are many. If you try looking for live games, the waiting time is too long, and sometimes the app will log you into a game that you won’t even see through your phone, regardless of how long you wait for the game screen (board) to come up. Moreover, the app might crash if you keep waiting. Upon leaving and coming back to the app, you’ll see the lost games due to “abandonment” when the game screen (board) wasn’t even visible. Another problem the app has is that it will crash upon analysis. If you look at a previous game with an engine, there is a high chance the app will crash. Even while doing tactics, trying to pull the analysis board will result in a crash. Please fix these issues, please make the app the way it was 2-4 updates ago, when everything was working fine.
Fairly Good, with one exception
by mquiring on 2019/10/08 18:03
Pretty quality game play with a big black eye. Reporting bad play/sports needs major improvement. There should be check mark choices under a report button to report bad play. For example I have had to sit through many, many, many games waiting for time to expire on my opponent because he became a piece down and he/she simply refused to resign or play. It’s like they’re exacting revenge on you for their mistake or lack of foresight? I recognize that some people my just lose track of the timer but there should be a system in place whereby after so many reports like this their ability to play the game (their account) is paused for a couple weeks and continues for longer times if the reports keep coming in after their penalties.
A good site but with massive cheating
by mwazoo on 2020/05/30 20:19
It is clear that overall this quite a fine site. But there is massive cheating that never seems to get reigned in. There are probably thousands or tens of thousands of instances where user IDs are shared. Or other forms of cheating occurs at all levels of play. I have personally repeatedly seen over years at least dozens if not hundreds of instances where the game play is far superior to the quoted rating. I can understand an occasional instance where there are reasonable reasons where that may be the case. But it happens so frequently that it is impossible to not recognize massive fraud going on. Losing a fair game is fine. But losing games to folks whose real skill level is hundreds of points higher than their purported rating is not. It is long overdue that this site be condemned for allowing this to go on so pervasively.
Must Have for Any Chess Player
by Star|Dust on 2018/06/01 00:02
Before finding this app out, all the free chess apps were either too basic or just not good enough. This app is complete and really makes you want to practice and test your skills online. I became way better after checking the lessons out and playing online. And I haven’t taken full advantage of all the features yet. 👍 Full free lessons from basics to strategies, playing online against humans, seeing afterward where you made mistakes to improve your vision, variety of features 👎 It is not clear what the different modes are (especially for playing online), although I don’t mind the lack of social features the menus can be reduced into clear categories
Love it..... but
by Holdem Harley on 2020/09/12 00:39
Love, love, love the app! Love the lessons, drills, and all. Love the rating system. I even paid an annual subscription cause it’s practice educating on how to improve and awesome to pass time during quarantine. 1. I wish I could invite a friend on my Facebook. 2. It just messed up. I had to re-download it right now because my score was frozen at 401 no matter how many games I won or lost. Update: Now I'm really upset. I’m a gold member.... PAID the annual fee and now the game is virtually useless. I monitor my overall improvement by my rating. My score is eternally stuck. Frozen at 401. I’ve deleted, re-downloaded and signed back in. I can’t figure out how I could have done anything. Real disappointment because I love the app. I wish someone could fix the bug or at the very least attribute my access to a new login!?!
Many functions freeze when internet connection is gone
by dustindorroh on 2019/02/22 19:50
I ride a train to work and was hoping to spend some time going through the puzzles and lessons, but it seems to need constant internet connection. Also many times the current puzzles will disappear if I switch apps or take a break. This is a huge bummer I don’t have much spare time other than my ride to and from work. Otherwise the app is amazing. I don’t give a one star review on apps I really enjoy, but this is a buzz kill since I just paid for the full year plan. Please fix this! Please make more functionality available when offline and make the timeout or phone home longer.
1 step back with Play vs Computer
by Arowkun on 2020/11/14 03:42
You took away the ability to have Player vs Player on 1 screen in the Computer mode. I used to set this down on the table at work and we would have a back and forth game using this mode. No reason it should have been removed. Edit: up to 3 stars since they’re adding it back. Full 5 once it’s here! Edit: up to 4 stars with pass n play. I don’t like that it doesn’t save the game and resets once you back out. Me and my buddies sometimes only have multiple 10 min breaks throughout the day, so we would pick up where the game left off. Will go to 5 stars if this feature is added. Also, there’s a bug on chess960 when trying to use the Analysis feature (app crashes).
You shouldn’t have to pay for a board game app to work properly
by Lefty Dub on 2019/10/24 04:55
This app is great except when it comes to tournaments. If you’re not paying for premium services, you basically can’t play in the tournaments. The board freezes but your clock starts and you can’t make a move (so you lose the game on time). This doesn’t seem to happen ever in free play, just during tournaments. Also, if you’re not paying for premium services, you can’t see the full standings, so unless you’re in the top 10, you have no idea where you are or who your next likely opponents might be and you can’t watch their games. The other issue with the app is that it makes false moves. Sometimes, when you touch a piece once, it moves to another square even though you never touched another square.
Missing functions
by Dragoishqiperise on 2019/08/29 21:51
Great app in terms of the quality of players but that’s just it. It needs a lot of work to be able to do the same things the desktop version does. It doesn’t support certain variants and you can’t live analyze a GM game right from the app while the game is still plying nor copy paste FEN, the biggest minuses, but a lot of other ones, just poor functionality overall. No excuse the biggest chess website shouldn’t be able to built a fully functional app offering all options. Willing to change my review if they fix those problems mentioned above. Also a very annoying message that doesn’t let you add friends above a certain number. It says “you’ve already reached the maximum allowed number of pending requests”, even though the requests aren’t pending anymore as they have accepted the friend request.
Addicted to this app!
by Rebeccaars on 2017/11/16 13:06
The tactical training is my favorite part and it improves my game. No, wait, playing as many games as I want, whenever I want, however I want, with people from all over the world is my favorite part. I never played chess until I found this app and now I play when I wake up, on breaks, when waiting for appointments, before sleep ~ pretty much whenever I can. I even have chess friends and I enjoy playing team matches. I never play at work, though, because that would be wrong. Except that one time. And I don’t play and drive, even if it is a five minute red light. It also tracks all of your stats, all of them, most of which I prefer to forget.
Good mobile version, however needs some improvements
by LORDCBK on 2020/10/26 23:29
For starters, I’m writing this as 1 Star because I think it’ll increase the chance the devs will see this. My actual rating of this app is a 4. Well, here we go. Straight to the issue: Whenever I finish a game, whether it’s online or against the computers, after I use self analysis or just exit to something else, there’s a window that takes up most of the top left corner of the screen. There’s a half-visible button on the window too, with the rest of it off-screen. You can scroll and interact on the app not covered by the window, but anything covered by it is untouchable. I have to restart the app every time to make it go away. I’d really like this to be fixed if it’s possible, there’s a chance it’s my device, not the platform that’s the problem here, but I’m not sure. Well, I really like this app, great mobile version of what I usually use on a laptop, and I don’t have many complaints about the rest of the app. Just wish I could do more lessons without premium :) Thanks for reading
THE chess app
by Dan Schultz @danschultzchess on 2018/01/20 02:30
This is the only chess app you need. The graphics, support, massive community of players, writers, and students, and content are unmatched and continually improving on a daily basis. This is the largest chess community with over 20 million members of all skill levels from beginners to the world champion himself. Much of the valuable content is free and will show immediate results, but I highly recommend the platinum membership if you are serious about development. This gives unlimited access to all videos, lessons, and content as well as access to platinum member tournaments. Whether you’re a new player, casual player, or serious player this is the one source for everything chess!

Glitches!
by AnnsleyJane on 2020/11/30 22:29
I love chess, and, in general, I really like this app, but it keeps saying “draw” when I get checkmate!

And still blocked players can still challenge you.

by ev-lilbird on 2020/11/30 00:02
It was alright in the beginning but gets worse with the app bugs.

Timed games
by m.cardenas4 on 2020/11/26 22:38
When playing a timed game my time is depleted immensely when it switches back to me.

Wonderful app for getting one into the game.
by orchman on 2019/03/02 04:09
I have played around with Chess apps for years.

This is the only chess app you need. The graphics, support, massive community of players, writers, and students, and content are unmatched and continually improving on a daily basis. This is the largest chess community with over 20 million members of all skill levels from beginners to the world champion himself. Much of the valuable content is free and will show immediate results, but I highly recommend the platinum membership if you are serious about development. This gives unlimited access to all videos, lessons, and content as well as access to platinum member tournaments.
