Good beginner course for ukulele
by nastal56 on 2020/10/23 23:49
I’ve worked my way through level 1 and am in the midst of level 2. One of the things I miss is no lyrics on the chord charts. I can go elsewhere to find them, but having the words makes such a difference in learning the rhythm of a song.

I am disappointed with how entry-level this is.
Great app!

Fender Play is a godsend and I love it! Just a few minutes per day has made an amazing difference in my guitar-playing ability.

by Robrose606 on 2020/10/12 22:24
I would sign up but I don’t like anything that I have to cancel. I would do the year and use PayPal. You should consider that. It looks like a great way to learn guitar.
Quarantine Savior
by BigMac6045 on 2020/10/12 15:28
Signed up for Fender play when quarantine started. Bought a banged up Yamaha for $40 and started from scratch. Never played an instrument in my life. Now? I am able to hold my own around a campfire and have even filled in at my church. I am not SRV by any means but crack open a few beers and hanging out with family and friends and I can keep you entertained. Not to mention this probably kept me from going stir crazy.
Brilliant app

I’m picked up the guitar knowing nothing and this guided app has been outstanding. O
Well worth the money
by whoaitsdaniellee on 2020/10/09 02:31
I absolutely LOVE Fender Play. I often get discouraged with real teachers because I don’t always have the time to practice consistently. I love how Fender Play encourages me to practice, but I can take it at my own pace. The videos are well made and informative, and they go at a great pace. The one time I submitted feedback, customer support got back to me very quickly. Plus, you get 10% off Fender gear. 10/10 would recommend
Great App. Very Beginner.
by isturite on 2020/09/27 04:51
Great app, great lessons, very beginner friendly, very well put together. If I was a beginner I would give 5 stars. I’m more of an intermediate level player and I whipped through a whole pathway in a week and we never really broke out of E minor. Too beginner for me. I would really like to see more advanced lesson content. If they introduce a pathway for jazz, RnB, or neo-soul guitar then I will subscribe for sure!

App does not work!!!!

Stuck in the subscription screen and can’t get past it even after subscribing!
Can you add more? Keeps crashing
by Parker-Calyx❤️ on 2020/09/21 16:53
I like Fender but it doesn’t have great song choices! Can you please add more songs like One Direction! You can play 18, Little Things, Over Again, Fools Gold, Truly Madly Deeply, and many more songs! When I’m going through artist my app keeps crashing and going back to my Home Screen. It’s getting annoying I try to update it but I never needs updating. Please fix this! I really want to enjoy the app but I can’t.

Thoroughly impressed
by Mike30055 on 2020/09/06 16:53
Like so many others, I am skeptical of app based learning such as this. But with COVID and the irregularity of life I decided to give guitar, as well as this app, another try. I chose the blues track and having made it about half way through level 2, I can say this app does a great job at teaching a beginner. I’m playing loads of chords, learning techniques and songs all at a very customizable pace. And in two weeks of using this app I feel like my skills have come a long way. Good job Fender
No real free trial...
by BigPapa71 on 2020/09/06 07:14
Yet another signup and then cancel within week “free trial”. Yo developers, how about a 1 song or x lessons trial and then a subscription? That is only way I would try your misleading software...sign with Apple account doesn’t work so u have to create an account or use favebook...why? So they can farm your data...wow...Fender, when did u sell out?
So far so good!
by marzamendi91 on 2020/09/06 06:03
I really enjoy the format of instruction. It’s quite easy to follow and it provides everything you need to be successful. The videos provide views from all angles, allowing the viewer to reference finger placement. I found that this app works best with an IPad, as the extra real estate enables you to read the tabs in the lower half of the screen, and watch the videos simultaneously on the upper half. I really hope Fender continues to upload new song tutorials.

by hhsf butgjgcbjyfcbj on 2020/09/03 01:31
Im not sure why this app is getting such strong reviews. A lot of this is just fender marketing. I’ve tried many beginner guitar lessons and found Justinguitar to be the best by far and it is run by one really cool dude not a huge corporation trying to sell you stuff
Eh, could do better..
by Savannah Prock on 2020/08/23 20:33
It’s good for learning cords but other than that not very useful. I would just recommend looking up stuff on YouTube it’s free and you have more of a range of options.
Better then learning by myself
by HKgmiller on 2020/08/23 14:45
Overall I did enjoy using this app (Ukulele Path) and am glad I tried it. If they made improvements, I’d continue to use the program. It was easier for me to use this app then read a book to learn. My main pros and cons are below: Pros: -Helped teach me as a beginner and never playing any instrument before. -I really liked Abby Lyons as an instructor and am now following her on YouTube. -I got to use the app for free during COVID. -I now know some basic chords and can play some songs on my own. Cons: -No lyrics with music even after having saying “now practice singing while playing”. I didn’t know the majority of the songs taught so I definitely didn’t know the words. -The order of how lessons were taught seemed wrong. For example you’d learn new chords and then learn a new song without those chords, but with different new ones that you didn’t go over yet. It seemed like sometimes the program expected you to know things or what to do, while other times acted like you don’t know any of the things you already practiced. - Even as a beginner, some lessons seemed to go really slow. - Would like more songs. - I feel like the app is missing something or needs a supplementary guide. For example, I’d like more guidance on strum patterns besides them saying now practice strum patterns. - I couldn’t practice the song with the instructor on my phone because I had to manually scroll to do it. - I did not finish the program and I don’t feel motivated to. I’m looking up videos and resources online while reading books about how to play. After having the basics, those have been more rewarding to me then this program.
Its addictive and effective

I am a long time guitar hack who never learned too much. Now with fender play, Im learning new songs and concepts fast sometimes in one sitting.

I really enjoy using this app. The instructions are clear and I see my progression.
Good but...
by Thuds098 on 2020/07/30 03:21
I have enjoyed the app and it has got me finally playing and actually making sounds that actually sound like music. But, they should include the lyrics to the songs in the practice and the lessons. Especially since in a lot of music the lyrics are keys for chord or strum pattern changes. Talking to several people online and they have the same complaint. But it has helped me enough that I paid for an annual subscription.
Grateful for 2020

I’ve been trying to learn how to play guitar my whole life. I struggle with social anxiety. It’s great to learn in the comfort of my own home. It’s also awesome to be able to learn at 2am. At my own pace at my own time. It’s only been like 5 days and I’m light years ahead of what I knew about guitar before.

Fender play review
by DanTacoWizard on 2020/07/10 23:16
I started playing with Fender lessons after my dad had taught me basic chords. Fender improved my playing by making it faster, teaching about diagrams and teaching about the chords that are neither major nor minor. I am only on level 3 now, so I am not sure what will happen next. So far, the music sheets and video lessons have been mostly good.
Great app
by Boomer Karen on 2020/07/07 23:27
I just got my first electric guitar, and it came with three months of fender play. I already had a little knowledge of acoustic, and this app really helps me move to the next level. I especially love choosing a genre that most interests me. You can practice at your own pace, and everything is explained deliberately and in detail to help you understand as you go. Would recommend to anyone. :)
Amazing
by Kaiden103 on 2020/06/29 21:11
I’ve had a private instructor before but it never really found a groove with my progression. This program lets me learn at my own pace and the instructors and lessons go over every detail. You can switch back and forth between moving forward or staying in one spot to practice before moving on. I went from never having touched a guitar to now being able to play songs that involve multiple chords. I have a lot more to learn, but I’m excited and ready to go through the lessons every time.
Don’t purchase this!!!!!!
by jdhduuwusuueue on 2020/06/29 18:43
This has to be the most terribly functioning app ever. Impossible to login, also very difficult on their web page. Then they proceeded to charge me even though I canceled my “free trial” a week before it ran up. Now I can’t get a response from their customer support. Stay away from this altogether. Really really bad.
Find a free trial first..
by 0101101z on 2020/06/27 20:16
Work thru a few lessons before you decide if this is something worth paying for (you’ll probably think ‘no’). Material presented is quick snippets, all over the place, no continuity or variation or overall arc. The app itself is way too basic and tough to play along with when you have to keep adjusting the view. Hey, Fender; this is a huge miss.
What’s Not To Love?
by Thistle360* on 2020/06/24 00:45
You get to learn guitar in the comfort of your own home and at your own pace? This is an amazing program! The lessons are in bite sized pieces making it easy to squeeze lessons in whenever you’re able. I love that the lessons work on various parts of guitar playing. My steel strings were tough to get used to, but I finally have healthy callouses and am forging ahead. I’m so happy I discovered Fender lessons via their three month free program offered during shelter in place orders. Nice to create a silver lining during a worldwide pandemic. I especially love the fender community and the note sharing on Facebook!
It sucks👎👎👎👎👎👎👎👎👎👎👎

Where Did Fender Songs Go?
by Guitarist Rob on 2020/06/18 16:14
I love my Fender stuff. Got a 68 custom deluxe, my baby is an 05 American Deluxe V Neck Strat, got a highway one strat, a dingy little squire strat that surprised the crap out of me, and a lot of merch including bar stools. I’m giving this 2 stars, because where did Fender Songs go? I’m using the app occasionally to make song and lyric learning much faster, but it’s disappeared from the App Store. I cant put it on my iPhone, even though i paid for a year of it. What’s going on? i even downloaded this app thinking it must have been integrated but upon attempting to restore purchases, it acts like i have not purchased any plans. Why am i being punished for buying into another Fender produc?. I’m lucky i didn’t delete the app from the iPad or I wouldn’t even be able to get my money’s worth out! Please advise!

I wish I subscribed to Yousician before this...!!!
by The B.S. Watcher on 2020/06/14 01:52
I thought this was going to be cool. It wasn’t..! The problem is the fact that it doesn’t tell you when you make mistakes. If that wasn’t bad enough, I was constantly getting emails about Fender products. Why should I buy a guitar new when I can simply get it on Craigslist. The fact is 90% of people that start the guitar quit during the first year. So there’s plenty of brand new guitars on Craigslist for cheap. But if you like buying brand new, this app does give you 10% off fender products. I was really disappointed till my friends told me to get Yousician.I'm so much happier now. I now practice the guitar for 2-3 lessons a night with Yousician. I’m totally hooked on playing the guitar. I always collected guitars and rare guitar amps, but I’m finally learning to play and Yousician is so much fun.
Awesome app, learned a lot
by orangutan2009 on 2020/06/10 19:25
I’ve been playing bass for less than two days so far and I’ve learned so much already! Definitely download this app.
Planning helps
by Joshuarubinart on 2020/06/08 01:22
Clearly they’re just throwing up lessons with no thought or planning, I would encourage someone from fender to actually play through all the programs and see where the errors (tab doesn’t match lesson) out of sequence (using a technique or chord before the lesson in which its introduced in the curriculum) and patronizing frustrating lessons fall - one lesson will be painfully slow overkill and repetition over something simple, the next will skip through something more complex assuming you already know it - there is no consistency or balance.

When I went to submit my annual plan it take me back to the sign in but when I went back to the sign in it would say I never submitted my free trial. Ok so I go to submit the yearly plan and it says I already did so I’m stuck on this page that says annual or monthly. I’m sure the actual thing is good but I’ll never know!
Could be technically a better app

The videos are fine, but I wish it incorporated the ability to listen to me play and pass/fail what I do (like some of the other apps out there).

There is something important that is missing.
by 2100carmel on 2020/06/01 13:02
There is something important that is missing in the Fender Play ukulele lessons. There are no words to the songs printed on the music. Granted, the person giving the lesson does sing the song during the lesson. However, I don’t know all the words to the songs and I don’t know exactly when to sing the words if they’re not printed on the music so when I go back to practice, I’m kind of lost. That’s a big missing piece and it makes it not enjoyable for me.
Excellent App
by Stev2k17 on 2020/06/01 00:44
The Fender Play app is extremely well made and organized. I decided to pick up guitar during the lockdown and this app has lessons that are a good size where you feel meaningful progress can be made while still being able to pause whenever you like. The video instructions are quite well done. Being able to review previous videos and training material is a great plus. The app also seems to offer plenty of tutorials on how to play songs. I haven’t spent much time on those since I still a beginner but they seem equally well done as the rest of the app.
I Don’t Think They Care About Southpaws
by EvNChris on 2020/05/29 13:55
I signed up for Fender Play so excited to get started. I had played guitar a decade ago but stopped due to life. The pandemic has forced me to appreciate everything. I love the FB community so much! The biggest gripe I have is that they don’t offer a left-handed option. I play left and am just asking for a simple toggle in the settings that allows you to pick the orientation. The videos don’t even need to change just update the chord charts, etc. I don’t think that would be difficult. I’ve put in several feature requests but Fender acts like “whatever.” I’m starting on Yousician that does allow lefties! Fender stop the discrimination!! Also following the practice lessons can be difficult if you don’t use the metronome as you have to keep scrolling to see the page. A zoom out feature may be a good option to have or even a reading option for songs so everything is on the same page.

Sure glad for the free trial 😕
by Stevo3985 on 2020/05/23 02:50
I really wanted this app to be good. I actually thought it would be great. I have been using the Apple GarageBand tutorials on my Mac to walk me through the basics, but I wanted better instructions, and this is where I hoped (more like, WAS SURE) I would find it. No such luck. Most apps with video I can run through my Apple TV and let my phone go to sleep, allowing the remote to navigate to the next video as each one ends. Not possible with this app. As soon as the phone goes to sleep, the video freezes, and it drops out, like, “GFY user, no more video for you. Also, have fun watching everything you just watched over again, as if you never even opened the app to begin with. Ha!” I went through this trying to get through the first 8 or 9 lessons over the course of an hour in the Rock introduction, and I felt like this app and my iPhone had teamed up together in a coordinated effort to ruin what was a really exciting day with my new Fender Thinline Telecaster. It was a huge disappointment. Furthermore, I’d like to address something that seems illogical and shortsighted at best - why isn’t there an Apple TV app for this? I know it is not difficult, and I cannot be the first one to have thought of this. Linux Academy, YouTube, RedBull TV, and a bunch of other video focused apps have an Apple TV implementation of their app so you don’t even have to mess with your phone or iPad to get the content. Fender is a HUGE, world renowned company, and somehow, their development team overlooked a very simplistic thing for which Xcode actually prompts the developer to ask if they would like to include the Apple TV platform in the process of building for iPad and iPhone. You are just a simple mouse click from accomplishing this addition, which Xcode then lays out a pretty well put together template for you to overwrite, build, compile just like any other Apple app, and upload to the Apple TV App Store. It costs no extra money and the code is all the same, so basically no extra effort. This way, when you download the iPhone version, the app is lumped into your account as ‘not yet on this device’ section of the purchased tab and can be downloaded to access all the same content on your TV without having to AirPlay to the display, which doesn’t work, as mentioned above. I really had high hopes for this app, but Fender Play is a huge letdown for me. I will not be pursuing this app’s lessons further. The only positive of this situation is that I got a free trial, so I can cancel the annual subscription I selected to avoid shelling out $90 on a poor implementation of what seemed like a really great thing. Thanks for the free trial, Fender, but seriously, please read my review and strongly consider the things I have said. You are better than this. Thanks.
Fantastic!
by NayNerd4 on 2020/05/20 13:35
I have played guitar/self taught some chords and songs before starting the lessons, but Fender has been able to help me understand more about chords, notes, and how to effectively read music. The lessons build on each other and allow for flexibility in how quickly I move through lessons. The instructors are great at teaching too! If you’re looking for online guitar lessons, this is a great program!

Absolutely love it! I’m learning how to play acoustic guitar and I’ve been enjoying it so far! I’d definitely recommend if you’re a beginner or if you’re not I’d still recommend. I feel motivated to keep practicing and playing.
Disappointing
by Rajcat on 2020/05/18 11:55
I’m really not impressed with the lessons provided or the songs to choose from. Fender also has a no refund policy if you want to cancel your subscription. I’d rather have live instructions from someone that can give you feed back and tailors the lessons for what you want to learn. I’ve picked up better tips and instructions watching YouTube. I guess I was expecting too much.
Just started it
by Mike Littt on 2020/05/13 23:37
So it looks good. I am a new to the guitar and I’m am excited about learning. This ap seems like it’s made to accommodate even the slowest learners. Some improvement, I use this app on my phone and in practice mode the screen doesn’t turn sideways. This is a hide problem because the music sheet is small and harder to read. Rotate it so it’s mandatory and let the music sheet run across the screen (from right to left). Have a stationary colored bar align with the notes you’re suppose to play when you’re suppose to play them. Please add an option where I can play with the song so I know what I’m suppose to sound like. It could be a simple switch. Either play with or without the music. Thank you for the app.
A good start
by Mrniceguy2010 on 2020/05/13 03:24
Fender really should integrate this app better with their other apps. Also, they really need an AppleTV version. If I’m using the app (as opposed to the website) I’m mirroring it on to my TV through the AppleTV. They really need to release a native Appletv app as watching on a big screen is so much easier to see what’s going on.
This App is Trash
by Parker1121315 on 2020/05/12 21:51
The tuner is so unresponsive it makes trying to tune a guitar harder than learning how to play. I’m glad I’m not a beginner trying to navigate this cause I probably would have quit.

I tried downloaded the app 4 times... twice each with the normal app and then the one week free option. I went through and entered the required info on the sign up page and when I hit the “continue/sign up” bar I kept getting an error that said “user does not exist/user cannot be found” in red colored writing. I have a coworker that has the app and she loves it and encouraged me to try it and renew my interest in learning to play my guitars again. I figured Fender would have their “stuff” together... but NO! Really disappointed. Let me know when you fix whatever is wrong with the app and let me know and I’ll try it again...

Great starter for aspiring guitarists
by Tranelover on 2020/05/08 16:42
I had played guitar some 50 years ago, so this wasn’t new. But I wanted to go back and start over, and Fender Play was perfect: logical progression, a go at your own pace approach with laid back instructors, and good practice modules to chart your progress. Well worth the $10/month charge. Yes, you can wade through many similar things on YouTube for free, but nothing like this. Go for it if you really want to play.

by ThatGeekMom215 on 2020/05/05 02:44
I liked it but would prefer something on the Apple TV. Sure you can airplay to the to but you have to leave the phone/pad screen on the whole time or the video stops which makes that pointless and annoying

The app is great. It starts from super simple exercises and teaches you chord and note notation, rhythm, picking, chords, and everything you need to know. Super helpful. Thank you so much Fender!
Worth it
by ZBAR42 on 2020/05/03 04:04
This app is worth at least one year I think, especially if you catch a sale. I played guitar for 5 years learning from books, videos, and friends. This app helped me tie a lot together and I think I’ve gone farther in the past year than the previous 5.
Poorly written app
by reallyunhappycoder on 2020/05/03 00:47
I signed up and made a simple mistake on my email. I have contacted “support” repeatedly. Nothing....finally after about a year or so I decided to try again. Still nothing from support when I contact them and it looks like the app is so poorly coded that it will not let me start a new subscription on the same device. Continually asks me to refer to the subscription tied to the incorrect email from years ago. Hire a developer that has some clue what they’re doing! This is ridiculous.
Bugs need to be worked out
by tk421clone on 2020/05/02 17:35
I want to love this app and service but the various issues stand out like a bad bass player. (1) on my Android, one plus 7t, the lessons don’t mark as complete. This kills the whole achievement aspect of the service. When I switched to my iPad 5th gen., it wasn’t an issue. (2) on the iPad there is an issue where it duplicates the lesson. For example in the first bass rock path you learn a riff from smashing pumpkins, it’s suppose to give you a lesson, then an exercise. Instead it just shows the lesson twice. I like the idea of the app and service, but if the app isn’t fixed soon I’ll have to cancel. That’s a shame because I have learned quite a bit from it.

Cannot even get past initial tuning step
by AllenPierce on 2020/04/29 02:19
Terrible app. The initial setup takes you through tuning your guitar. Very buggy. I get to the G string and I pluck it once and it says I’m flat. Pluck it again without changing string tension and it says I’m sharp. I simply cannot get past that part of the setup procedure. Tried adjusting volume of my amp up and down to no avail. Finally gave up. Useless.

by hf hf h f on 2020/04/28 20:57
I expected more from Fender App, the money is no worthy, the lessons are very bad, you can’t learn too much with them, and when you are not longer a beginner, you are just listening to useless classes. Try improve it

by AG706 on 2020/04/26 21:20
Not happy at all with the broken instructions they give. Then they don’t even teach you a song. Everything they teach is half — fill in the blank. Then their people that respond have nothing but excuses. Save your money and don’t purchase.

Great for learning but....
by Ekaj77 on 2020/04/19 15:07
As a beginner this is a good start, but the instructors go way too fast and expect you to keep up. The most annoying, however, is when I complete a lesson and it still shows as incomplete, even if I override it and mark it complete it is still red , not green and won’t let me advance to the next lesson. If you want to keep me using this app, better yet HEY FENDER IF YOU WANT ME TO KEEP PAYING, FIX THIS!
Lack of chrome cast for practice.
by Stupid Penis on 2020/04/17 23:59
It makes no sense that you cam chrome cast lesson videos but not practice. This is a critical flaw. The whole fender play thing is terrible. It won’t let the practice lessons play on my mobile browser and they don’t have an app for Android TV. Thank god I used the free trial before I paid for this crap.

This app is for people who have never played guitar in their life before. I downloaded this app to find out that for me, everything was too easy. In the beginning of the lessons, sometimes the instructor will play a really cool lick that I would like to learn but instead, you do the very basic version of what he just did. by The_Chief_Knows on 2020/04/10 02:18
Fender has done a wonderful job in creating this format to learn one of four style of stringed instruments. I’ve even upgraded to a better quality ukulele and shared my old one with my 6 year old nephew so we can learn together.
It is the best!
by livey2018 on 2019/10/08 00:06
I am so happy about this app but one thing about it is that it cost $50 a month after your 2 week trial but other that that it is the best way to learn your ukulele I definitely recommend it to you it has been my 3 week of learning the ukulele and I have been taking my time I usually practice every other day after school I am now learning to transition into different notes and the best part is you can ask questions to who ever is teaching you I am a little bit weird but I like to play my ukulele backwards and they said it is ok as long as I tone it backwards so I did and I am having no trouble with this app what so ever they also show videos on how to do everything step by step I definitely recommend this to you and if you get this app I really hope you love it as much as I do!
Fender - you can so much better than this
by timpanglao on 2019/06/05 13:50
Maybe i didnt spend enough time with it, or not patient enough to follow their structure, but i am not impressed. I am still somewhat of a beginner guitar player, so what would have been nice is to yes learn chords and the appropriate songs with those chords so i immediately feel i have progression. Example i chose different songs and each one in the video shows me the chord fingering, if i already learnt C,G, A, Em....i dont need a video on that, yes i can fast forward but it tediuos. What would be nice is to see the guitar tab/ chords and play along, however at best i might get 8bars if i goto full screen you cannot play the video, or rather i just want to play along with the track but you can’t do that. Would be nice if you could filter songs based on Chords and the tutorial goes through the progression or strummimg pattern. Some of the structure of the app is about a few riffs which is ok - but not that usefull. Sorry but not worth the subscription - i was hoping the fender app would complement my JustinGuitar not the case. I am not bashing Fender, i have a Strat and a Mustang Amp and their Tone app which is great- hope this feeback is useful
Good at the start but progresses WAY too fast!
by Real gamer here on 2019/02/13 23:47
I liked this from the start but I am in the second level and the instructors do an absolutely terrible job at informing the viewer of what is coming up next in a chord progression. The tab doesn’t show up so I can’t follow along. It also doesn’t scroll so I can’t play along event Shawn the tab does show up. I can’t even pause to practice because the video control blocks the list of chords. So many things add up to a terrible experience. I wish there was a way that I could play along more easily. The instructors need to pause between chord progressions. You can’t assume everyone can just jump right in and be perfect at it. I will still use this app but it’s really not the experience I wanted. I think o might go back to You Tube. I think I learned at a more steady pace. Frustration. I have thrown my pick down more than once because of how poorly these “instructors” actually instruct. I watched 4 videos in a row on what the strings were called but when it comes to chord progressions they fly right through it. Sad.
Not worth the money
by strike me down on 2019/09/30 20:14
I downloaded the app without paying much attention to the details. (Stupid move). So a few days later my cc is charged $11- The MONTHLY fee. So I said what the hell, might as well take advantage of my purchase. I was thinking it would be interactive as in the app would “listen” to your playing and if you passed the course you would then move on to more advanced lessons. Well this is definitely not that. It’s essentially a bunch of videos where they baby step you into guitar playing. There’s no music, no graded progression... the play along literally gives you a link to the iTunes version of the song, so you can buy that and play along. I can’t believe I wasted $11 and furthermore had I not canceled I would have been paying 11 bucks every month for a bunch of video clips of someone playing guitar. Just not what I was expecting. Maybe it’s the right format for some people but not me. I hate this app. The only reason I gave it 2 stars is because the app is well made from a clean, easy to navigate standpoint.
From drums to bass in a few easy (and informative) lessons 👍
by the lifetime student on 2019/01/15 22:07
Fist and fore most, I’m a drummer, but after missing out on a few paying gigs because I couldn’t play any other instruments... I picked up the the bass. I figure I would stay with the rhythm section, plus for ever 10 guitar players there’s maybe 1-2 bassist. But I digress ...this fender online class is really informative with easy to follow instructions and instructors that seem to really enjoy the instrument. So for anyone how’s looking for an online instruction class for the beginner or even those who’ve needed to add a little something to their playing, check out this class.
Rewarding but flawed
by Guywhoneverhascash on 2019/06/27 09:45
I’ve been learning for about 2 weeks from the app and I’ve been getting quite annoyed by the videos themselves. They’re unresponsive at time when trying to rewind, pause or to even access the video controls. And that when the video controls are up, the block the chord progressions. It makes it worse that you can’t pause the video without blocking the progressions. I’ve also been having trouble with the app loading up, but none of the content appearing, and only for it to crash when tapping the “levels button.” Other than these specific annoyances the information is remarkably good. You learn with a mixture of slow exercises to then utilize them in songs. All while practicing various other things
Good but seems like better options out there
by Osiris42 on 2019/02/18 17:49
I’m a beginner, and while I like fender play, it’s missing a couple things that would make it much better. A simple thing is that the tabs don’t scroll along with this lesson, or auto scroll when you practice on your own. Consequently, you can’t see the sheet music while you’re playing along. You can only see one line at a time. It’s a simple thing but has really hampered my progress. Also I don’t know why they don’t include the lyrics along with the tab, they even say how you should sing along with the song, but don’t make that available to you. I signed up for the full year, and now I regret it because I think I’d rather try something like yousician that gives you feedback as well as has these other features.
Nicely paced instruction but okay app
by Jacob Van Order on 2020/04/02 17:53
Fender’s instructional pace is nice and they really get down to the nuts and bolts of how to play music but the app is lacking. Most egregious of all is the streak counter. Most times, it fails to update itself or have the correct date or number of practice sessions. I’ve found that if I kill the app entirely and then practice, it is usually right but weeks have passed where I didn’t get credit for practicing. This is fine but kind of weird that a function that they push with marketing campaigns and push notifications doesn’t work. Other than that, I think allowing the video to be put into the corner so that I can focus on the sheet music would be helpful. I use my iPad while practicing and more than half the screen is obfuscated by the video and I can’t see ahead to the next set of chords are unless I take my hands off the guitar to scroll. The app is a nice cross platform app, though. It rarely crashes and the design is really nice. Of course I wish it hooked into my guitar interface and listened to see if I was hitting notes correctly but I know that’s a heavy ask for a cross platform app.
Pretty good, has flaws.
by dupre914 on 2020/01/16 23:07
First of all, it wouldn’t even let me sign up! Next it won’t let me use it if I don’t pay, are you really that eager for money? If you are looking at downloading this software don’t even waste the time to. It’s a BUST, so go over to guitar tuna and they have a tuner, games and lessons and even free songs to play. This is garbage. This is two days later and all my friends that told me this app was good all deleted it within a day of having it. I have a Fender guitar and even Fender picks. This was not impressive. Maybe next time spend more time on an app that could have made you millions but only made you 6 pennies and lost most of your savings ing your piggy bank. A 5 year old could have made a more successful app in two days that you made in 3 months, that you call an investment. BUMMER, you had so much potential!!!
Pretty fun for an old guy
by Classic Jazz on 2019/06/23 21:15
I didn’t know where to start when I decided to learn how to play the guitar. So I went to a pawn shop and bought a 50 dollar guitar and then found the Fender app. This thing is great. I can use it once a day or three times a day. It is ready whenever I have time and the lessons start just where I need them to start, right at the beginning. So having turned 61 years old I have found something that I am clearly horrible at that I plan to get better at. That’s pretty cool for an old guy and the Fender app is making it possible.
Another Request
by DocSalchow on 2019/04/09 00:50
I’m enjoying the app; however, it is difficult to follow the tabs, even on my iPad Pro, because the video takes more than half the screen. Online, via the website, when you scroll up on the tags, the video minimizes and gives you a larger view of the tabs, which makes following along so much better. How is it that the online version has more features than the app? Also, it sure would be nice if the tabs were synchronized with the video, at least then I wouldn’t need to try scrolling as much. That being said - my fingers hurt, so I must be doing something right.
Can be tedious, but worth it.
by Geoff_with_a_G on 2020/04/05 21:39
I've been playing the piano for forty+ years and the guitar for twenty five, so the lessons counting and music theory are not that helpful. Eventually, they quit going over the chord shapesbat the beginning of each lesson, which helps too. But I never took lessons, and I have a lot to learn about strumming and alternative chord shapes and the like, and this program is a big help. The incentive system to keep me practicing is also a big help, and since I can skip the lessons on stuff I already know, the repetition is no big deal.
Needs more music.
by sparten 459 on 2018/07/17 23:26
For what it is; it’s a great app to learn from, but what I hate is the lack of varied music genres: pop, rock, blues, and country are wide terms for music, and their over all choice of songs is lacking. Especially in the rock department, as far as I could find because of a lack of an actual search option: I couldn’t find any Metallica, FFDP, and only a few AC/DC if I remember correctly. I guess I’m just mad that Fender bought, then shut down Riff Station. I hadn’t found any other app that allowed you to learn the very basics of any song from my obscure favorite of Der Erste Schritt with it’s beautiful acoustic to literally anything Linkin Park. I’d gladly pay the subscription if they had an eighth of the songs.
Way too basic and miserably boring!!!
by flukezilla on 2019/09/18 11:20
Typically I don’t review apps but this one....this one I felt the needed to. It’s under 100 bucks a year which is totally reasonable and I don’t have an issue with that. My issue is with the content. Video is easy to follow and well put together but the instructors are like drones. I mean painfully boring. How can you relate to someone that sounds like a disinterested politician? Now onto the content. If you are a complete noob or just want a refresher to get back into playing you would think “Fender” would be a good resource. NOPE!!! This is so basic you can rip through the entire program in like 5 days and find yourself asking, “Now what?” Personally I think Fender makes great guitars but their instructional content is garbage. Look around and you will find better online lessons.

Making it easier to follow along
by Sonnydoug on 2018/06/23 18:30
I recently bought my 1st guitar a squire strat fender, I love almost everything about this app. Only thing is when the instructor is telling playing music with us we have to listen to them tell us to switch vs reading the chords. It’s extremely hard playing my guitar and the instructor playing his and trying to listen to his voice for the change. We should be able to read them music as we are playing not just hear the instructor. Maybe adding the chords to the bottom on the video so it is much easier keeping up and following along.
Amazing
by Kaiden103 on 2020/06/29 21:11
I’ve had a private instructor before but it never really found a groove with my progression.
Beginner and learning from Fender!
by Blonde Samantha on 2018/07/26 03:06
I just purchased my guitar today. I brought the guitar home, and downloaded the Fender Play App. The app starts at the very beginning. For a beginner like myself, this is great! The instructors patiently take you through setting up your equipment. You learn the string names. The instructors add in a simple pneumonic device to help you remember the strings. (Easter Bunny gets dizzy at Easter) How easy is that?! I am just getting started tonight, but I can already tell that this is going to be a learning method that I can stick with. Samantha F. Seattle
Eukulele tutorial
by JKR285 on 2020/03/05 17:46
Content and progression of lessons seem to fit my beginning skill level. My only issue is that as you progress and the lines of music increase, it is impossible to follow the music while watching the tutorial. They have a couple of ways to change video size, but are never able to see the music without taking your hands off the instrument and scrolling the screen down. I was also informed that there are no lesson books to purchase and don’t allow printing of music due to copy right issues. It is impossible to play along while watching a lesson. A very big short coming in my opinion to an otherwise good online course.
App problem

Didn’t see a customer support email so decided to try here. I bought a subscription to fender play and having problems. First time I tried it worked as it should. It asked my name, email and such then for payment. But then nothing happened. Tried it again and it keeps starting from step 1. Tried it over 5 times and it keeps asking me to subscribe when I already have subscribed yet it doesn’t send me to the part where it says pick what your playing: either bass, electric, acoustic or the last one I forgot. Please help me!! I’ll change the stars when I get a fix for it.

by LI Aerial on 2019/08/27 17:30
I’ve been toying around with guitars nearly 40 years. Never had time or patience for formal lessons until I came across Fender Play. The lessons are short and simple to learn and within minutes I’m playing the correct way! I often train online in front of my computer, or take in lessons on my phone or iPad while waiting in the doctors office. You can even go over a particular lesson again until you fully understand. So far, so good!
Excellent learning tool
by tfigs on 2019/10/27 15:07
This is an excellent learning tool for anyone new to an instrument or just wanting to brush up on some skills. I hadn’t played bass in 15 years and got back into it. This program took me through 5 levels and was a great refresher. The videos are short and to the point. They offer a nice selection of songs to learn from classics to modern hits. You control the pace. Well put together. I would definitely recommend this to anyone starting out.
Bait and switch
by T2I2M on 2020/01/12 03:25
My son got a fender guitar for Xmas..Tried the trial version.. after wanted $4.99 a month special, he declined..found out he couldn’t get in the app without sub..deal changed to $7.99 a month with a year paid up front. Now it’s $9.99..Yeesh! What’s with all the changes, man!..why so greedy, there is no free content, no ability to go into your acct and all the time he spent on the app is gone. I know money makes the world go around, but with all the price changes..smh..you don’t show Me luv! ..I don’t show luv back. I rather go to an app that understands giving access BOTH free and sub options gives confidence to the consumer that you want to HELP them grow as an artist.
Fender Listen
by Mofury on 2020/01/03 00:59
I love the format and the paths. I just want to know if it’s possible to get a tuner that can hear if we are playing these things, if not precisely as that would be very difficult programming, but at least getting close? A G-chord should register close to a G, etc. It can also tell if the chords hit with the metronome. This would go a long way to answer the question that is asked of everyone learning to play, “Are your rhythm, and your ears, and your playing ACTUALLY improving; or are you leaving knowledge and skill on the table in the name of progress?” Please don’t take offense. I love this whole Fender Play idea/product. I simply wish this feature on every online learning tool. Nothing will ever be as effective as the ancient person to person, Sensei to student-like model. Online guitar lessons, though, could be immensely improved by that one feature. Thank you for this.
Fun and efficient!
by Al Muzaurieta on 2019/03/13 15:52
I have always wanted to learn the guitar but never really knew where to begin. FenderPlay was the perfect solution. The short lesson format and amazing teachers they have on the site keep you motivated to learn. You can really feel the progress as you go through the lessons, plus the flexibility means it’s all tailored to your schedule. I started on February 1 and by Valentine’s Day could sing a song for my girlfriend! I didn’t think that was possible! Highly recommend!
Great Way To Restart
by ServeHim on 2019/03/15 02:20
I have been playing on and off for 46 years. When I began there were almost no helps in learning other than private lessons or getting friends who could play to teach you. I enjoyed moderate success for many years playing rhythm and singing. I laid it down for the most part for several years. I am beginning again and going back to lesson one. I want to learn notes and lead. I enjoy the bite size lessons from Fender Play.
Good but
by MainRevgamer on 2020/01/02 02:05
They give you the basics and give good overall quality to learn music theory and the other needed parts when it comes to learning an instrument. I can only wish that they do a better job in giving the user more of a challenge with songs after completing the paths. The songs that they have on this app are at there basic forms and it makes the app seem although good for basics very poor for guitar players wanting to learn the actual song in its fullest. Majority are tweaked or are only parts of songs.
Loving fender play
by Birdwonder on 2018/12/29 00:23
I am loving the simplicity and ease of the fender play lessons. I have started learning to play guitar several times in my life and never really stuck with it and this time around I am showing up every single day and fender play is a key component in this. I am practicing and loving the lessons. They are short and sweet, but already I can feel a big difference in my reach and finger stretching. This is a great app for a beginner like me. I definitely recommend it!
My Best Friends Girl
by Avengers93 on 2018/12/16 01:13
In no part of the video lesson for The Cars - My Best Friends Girl does the instructor ever play the song to hear what it should sound like. I know the song of course and I could obviously play the song on my phone. But in the video they should give an example of what the song sounds like the way the instructor is teaching it. Very frustrating. An example of what I’m talking about is Marty’s Music on iTunes. Everyone of his videos starts with him playing the song through once so you have it in your head, then he begins the lesson. It’s incredibly effective. Please consider. Thanks! Great app otherwise, but to me it’s a deal breaker
Sign Up Problems
by Man_of_Dreams on 2018/12/15 18:49
I was shopping around to see which online app to learn guitar was convenient, and ended up going with this one because it gives the option for monthly payments, other competitors like yousician wanted a yearly subscription in advance. Unfortunately, when I went through the sign up process, it said I was subscribed, but could not log in, even though I know i was putting the correct password. I kept getting the error message: Nulls is not an object (evaluating s.status). I wanted to contact customer service but saw that they are only available mon-fri. It forces you to send an email and wait for them to reply back on monday...At that point i just cancelled it...
Great Instruction Videos
by ChefLinde on 2019/02/28 18:16
I tried learning guitar when I was 19yrs. My electric guitar got stolen and I never got back into it. I picked up an Acoustic Guitar Jan. 2018....I practiced hard for a year and then bought a fender bullet squier. I saw the app downloaded it and have not looked back! Electric guitar has awesome sound and easier to play on hands. Plus the app lets you see your progression and helps understand music styles! Thanks Fender I am hooked on your guitar/music drug!
Good but....
by furym42 on 2019/11/10 23:20
I have two small issues. 1. When I finish a lesson and click next to go to the exercise it simply repeats the lesson video. I have to back out to the lesson list to select the exercise. 2. When I go to an exercise to practice a song riff I just learned in a lesson, there is no backing track. It would be great if I could practice along to the song I am supposed to be learning instead of just a metronome. The video quality is great and the instructors are clear and easy to understand. I just wish I had music to play along with.
Hard to follow
by Lrwho on 2019/03/31 21:43
I’m loving this app, I’m learning so much! One thing that’s frustrating is that I can’t see the tabs as I’m playing along. For example, in level 2, Ode to Joy, he’s telling me which notes to play and the tabs are available, but I can’t swipe them along as I’m playing to see the next bar so they’re kind of pointless. I have a tablet that I’ve been writing them down in so I can practice but it would be so great if the tabs would be visible as they’re being taught.
App Lacking
by JK Novo on 2019/03/18 15:23
As a beginner to playing the guitar, unfortunately I didn’t know what would work best while trying to learn. I can say there are positives toFender Play, but my biggest complaint is trying to learn the chord progressions, but the tabs don’t show. Also the songs don’t scroll while trying to play which is extremely confusing and frustrating!! I can’t believe how fast the instructors play and expect you to just follow their verbal cues. I really which I hadn’t signed up for the full year as it’s been 1 month and I’m so frustrated.
One of the best ways to learn!
by Vissdiesel on 2018/06/30 00:40
Fender Play makes learning fun. I can practice at my own pace and also recap where I left off on the previous lesson without worrying about session time limits. The songs are pretty cool and the instructional videos are very informative. I also like the Fender Play community that is available through social media. This let’s students interact with each other by watching uploaded videos of progression.
Neck angle
by johnno1500 on 2019/05/12 22:52
Really enjoying Fender Play so far (about 50% into first part). I was having problems with getting my fingers into position for fretting as all the instructors seem to have the neck “flat”. However, I saw elsewhere that it’s more comfortable to angle the neck with the head higher up and easier to get the correct position for the hand. I found this to be a great tip and works for me much, much easier!!! As an absolute beginner, lots of fun so far with Fender Play. (I’m 60yo; never played any instrument before...)
Fantastic!
by NayNerd4 on 2020/05/20 13:35
I have played guitar/self taught some chords and songs before starting the lessons, but Fender has been able to help me understand more about chords, notes, and how to effectively read music. The lessons build on each other and allow for flexibility in how quickly I move through lessons. The instructors are great at teaching too! If you’re looking for online guitar lessons, this is a great program!
Great way to learn!
by JoshFSF on 2019/04/04 01:20
I'm a huge fan of this app! I wanted to learn how to play guitar for years so I could jam with my dad. I tried lessons at a local music school and didn't click w the instructor so I gave up. Then I found this app and it's a real game changer! Lessons are 3-5 minutes and there's a well thought out learning path. 2 months in, I'm playing songs and can't put my guitars down. So glad I found this app!
Horrible customer service/support
by Ranran1312 on 2019/03/11 17:03
During the free trail everything was good. After the free trail I paid for an annual subscription then the app required you to change your password. Then the issues began. It would never allow me to change my password then said I wasn’t a customer. I called customer support several times and nobody would call back. A month went by and I called again and all they would say is that they would submit another ticket to look into it. Horrible customer service and would recommend paying for annual subscription because they won’t help you after you pay

Good beginner course for ukulele

I’ve worked my way through level 1 and am in the midst of level 2. One of the things I miss is no lyrics on the chord charts. I can go elsewhere to find them, but having the words makes such a difference in learning the rhythm of a song.

If they introduce a pathway for jazz, RnB, or neo-soul guitar then I will subscribe for sure!

by Parker-Calyx❤️ on 2020/09/21 16:53
I like Fender but it doesn’t have great song choices!

Good but...
by Thuds098 on 2020/07/30 03:21
I have enjoyed the app and it has got me finally playing and actually making sounds that actually sound like music. But, they should include the lyrics to the songs in the practice and the lessons. Especially since in a lot of music the lyrics are keys for chord or strum pattern changes. Talking to several people online and they have the same complaint. But it has helped me enough that I paid for an annual subscription.

Great app

This has to be the most terribly functioning app ever. Impossible to login, also very difficult on their web page. Then they proceeded to charge me even though I canceled my “free trial” a week before it ran up. Now I can’t get a response from their customer support. Stay away from this altogether. Really really bad.

It says it’s free but they make you pay for a subscription or you can’t learn to play anything.😡👎

Sad... Really Sad
by Martyb661 on 2020/05/11 20:44
I tried downloaded the app 4 times... twice each with the normal app and then the one week free option. Let me know when you fix whatever is wrong with the app and let me know and I’ll try it again...

by Tranelover on 2020/05/08 16:42
I had played guitar some 50 years ago, so this wasn’t new.

Worth it
by ZBAR42 on 2020/05/03 04:04
This app is worth at least one year I think, especially if you catch a sale.

Thank god I used the free trial before I paid for this crap.

by Mr.Bigboy on 2020/04/16 19:44
If your like me, you have some experience with the guitar. You know barr chords, you know a lot of songs and you want to take that next step. This is not the app to take that next step. This app is for people who have never played guitar in their life before. I downloaded this app to find out that for me, everything was too easy. In the beginning of the lessons, sometimes the instructor will play a really cool lick that I would like to learn but instead, you do the very basic version of what he just did. I felt like he/she just teased me in that moment. FOR BEGINNERS, I TOTALLY RECOMMEND THIS APP. But when you want to take that next step, go somewhere else.

For those intermediate players
by Mr.Bigboy on 2020/04/16 19:44
If your like me, you have some experience with the guitar.
App problem
by C Petway on 2019/10/01 20:25
Didn’t see a customer support email so decided to try here.
Quick jump starter for this old player

I’ve been toying around with guitars nearly 40 years. Never had time or patience for formal lessons until I came across Fender Play. The lessons are short and simple to learn and within minutes I’m playing the correct way! I often train online in front of my computer, or take in lessons on my phone or iPad while waiting in the doctors office. You can even go over a particular lesson again until you fully understand. So far, so good!
Great Instruction Videos
