Stay away

This app is okay, not great but good enough. The problem is the company behind the app. They have changed direction twice since I’ve been using their products. Each time, the app is completely rewritten and renamed. Each time, the cost increases and new problems appear. The company is very poorly managed and I have to strongly condemn their behavior. Do not use this app!
Unresponsive Support
by trace.mr on 2020/01/06 14:43
I have sent countless emails to this companies support email with zendesk requesting for my account and all personal data to be deleted, and have not been responded to AT ALL. The only response I get is an automated email saying “Thank you for contacting Simple Control. This is an automatic email just to let you know we’ve received your request for support.” Get someone on it.
App is great - business model changes are frustrating
by Alemis on 2020/01/02 02:22
This app is great if you love to tinker with tech. The device and service integrations are numerous and the app is incredibly flexible. I do think you need to be somewhat of a techie as it does require setup. My only frustration is with their changing business models. I've been a long-time subscriber and it is a pain to navigate the transition from roomie, to simple control, and back to roomie. But the tech is rock solid, so I'm still a fan.
Long time user but no more
by EricSakariasen on 2019/12/18 05:08
New users beware of bait and switch! I was a user through roomie and into the third version and let me tell you, the developers are very much about siphoning as much money as possible. With each iteration of the app they will force you to pay for a new app while also changing the subscription costs for per device access. The worst part is the constant changes which leave you hoping a feature you rely on isn’t pulled. Along with that the inconsistent and buggy interface with simple things like silent urls and plex integration are only as frustrating as being told that “it works fine for them”. The last issue is the clear text passwords passed to them for authenticated access to services when you ask for help...... I’m sorry but I spent the time and did all this integration with HomeBridge and some custom scripting and I’m 100 times happier with the result.
Worth the effort
by calimed on 2019/10/01 02:49
Previous owner of an Elan system. Hated not being able to upgrade and control my own system. Also hated the enormous cost associated with repairs/tweaks/upgrades. This app/software was able to utilize almost 90% of my old equipment and now I have full control. Many things I didn’t have before like amazing Apple integration. With Hey Siri I can turn on/off any TV/entertainment system. I can also control from my watch! Took me a few days to learn how to use the software but it was time well spent. Be patient with it and it will be worth the effort.

Long time user will find something else

This app now requires a subscription. I have spent quite a bit of money when it was still roomie remote. There are too many good competitors to be treated like this.
Terrible customer service/tech support
by 911 dmh911 on 2019/09/13 22:36
I have tried and my programmer has also tried numerous times to get tech support regarding new version of simple control. The support offered by Roomie/Simple Control is the worst I have ever encountered. It borders on sarcastic replies to no reply at all. Do not buy this product.
Support is horrendous
by fb*mb* on 2019/08/28 21:19
The product is nice but don’t try to get any help from support, you are way to much trouble to them, hey you are only the reason why they have a job but who cares, why should they worry about customer issues or satisfaction!
A hundred bucks a year? No thanks!
by happy2harris on 2019/08/12 02:16
Downloaded this because it said it supported Roku and apple watch. It can’t control Roku without a $100 per year subscription. Forget it.
Setup
by 320drvr on 2019/07/30 16:56
Works well when setup. Some videos demoing the setup would be extremely helpful esp. for the more complicated setups esp. switches and lighting.
No instructions on how to renew annual subscription
by customer909 on 2019/07/30 00:32
I contacted them twice through the app as they require. No reply. I like the app but their customer service is non-existent. Apple stopped auto-renewals (shame on you Apple). How do I renew? No clue.
Extremely Rude customer support.
by Cookeyxyz on 2019/07/27 19:13
App has been modified constantly over the years. Here is my final email to the company To whom it may concern: I have been trying to use your app for a number of years with only limited success. I have purchased faithfully various accessories in order to have the best possible outcome. I have all of them as a matter of fact. The fact that you have had revision after revision of your software is not my problem or my fault. And you are fully aware of the constant changes to your app, therefore requiring the endlessly long explanations in your faq’s. One example: First you have a hub, then there’s no longer a hub. Use the Apple 4k…use the iPad... Then there’s a dedicated device necessary. Through all these changes I have continued to pay for for a product that I’m simple unable to use. And I’m sure your email records will substantiate my history with your company. Having said that, It seems that your company would prefer not having me as a customer. Your last email made that perfectly clear. I will tell you that I have your emails and will post them to all my social media accounts of which I have considerable presence. I will not hesitate to express my extreme disappointment and discontent with not only the application but more importantly, the rude nature in which my concerns have been addressed by Simple Control customer service. In all honestly I can’t remember the last time I was treated with such disregard by any company that is supposed to be providing a service I am paying for. I will be happy to promptly cancel my subscription. I will never attempt to use this app again...
Great system
by Apprweb on 2019/07/27 15:14
It takes a little work to customize, once you set it up it’s flawless. Runs on all my iPads and phones around the house and keeps track of status. When you turn something on or off, every phone or pad is updated and in sync.

Worst support I've ever seen
by azilko on 2019/07/21 05:11
Their support will talk down to you and does the bare minimum without ever trying to help. You'll literally go through 5 follow up messages because they won't read your initial issue. They self moderate any negative feedback or issues on their forums as well. So you can't get help there.
Making good product progressively worse
by Mmoldovan on 2019/07/04 05:03
Started years ago with Roomie and was very happy with app and direction. Two years ago after redesign this turned to s@&$t. Beautiful GUI was changed to ugly Atari theme. Complex actions now require Hub. I don’t want yet another hub. Apple TV is now wasted as dedicated SC hub. It is impossible to lock the app running on ATV and I often find Hub disconnected. Using this less and less now, switching mostly to Alexa interface and voice control. All it took just an urge from devs to “improve” good product to loose a loyal ambassador. Shame
Has Potential, Until You Have a Question
by GeorgeEP on 2019/06/22 16:46
This product has been around for a while. The developer has a little trouble making up his mind what to call it -- Roomie Remote, Simple Home, Simple Control... it's tough to understand that direction. On the surfact, it looks to be a great idea -- integrated IP remote of all your home components. Just don't expect any decent documentaiton on exactly HOW a particular device is integrated or WHAT you have to do to make it work. Don't bother with the user-to-user forum -- the developer "moderates" all negative discussion or questions to the recyle bin. Facebook? Stock photos and pitches that are over a year old and all requests for help deleted with "contact Support through the app" responses. And then, there's that: Contacting "support" through the app results in evasive non-answers and "your question is closed" responses when you actually ask how a device is supposed to work. If you can figure this out entirely on your own, you may like it. Just don't expect any reasonable/understandable answers from the developer, who appears to be spending most of his time deleting users comments on all available forums.
Worst customer support
by Beckelman on 2019/05/23 04:18
As for the product it’s OK. I like it although it’s a bit arcane and the documentation on provides basic setup. But the customer service is the worst. I really don’t know they even have it. All they tell you is it’s your problem...you fix it. Hey simple control, THAT’S NOT SUPPORT!
Not Simple. Expensive.
by jon617 on 2019/05/11 14:17
Used the old Roomie and Simple Control on my other devices, but thought I’d try this new version on my new iPad. It’s not intuitive, and keeps insisting I subscribe to monthly payments to do what their old apps did for free. Most of the manual settings are gone, and this app is now completely useless without paying money every month.
Great, but...
by Epheumsirc on 2019/05/05 03:22
Really love the potential. It mostly works and is very powerful. But it isn’t consistent between the iPhone and iPad. Also doesn’t stay in or do what the configuration says it’s supposed to. Awesome replacement for my old iRule remote though. Hope they keep fixing things.
Garbage
by Kaman23 on 2019/04/30 09:34
Do not waste your money on this garbage. I have used their app to control my entire home for 7 years. They destroyed what used to be a great control system and replaced it with a worthless piece of garbage .Stay away from this garbage. The turned the best and easy control system into a nothing but a piece of garbage.
Great upgrade from a custom remote
by dschach on 2019/04/28 19:21
I installed a home theater in 2008. It was controlled by a custom Philips Pronto based system. Philips left the market I was left with an orphaned system. I bought 3 blasters and replaced the old controller. Some equipment needed ir, one component serial and another needed a relay. Simple control recognized everything in my system despite some of the gear being quite old. It even upgraded one component from ir to ip control. The simple control requires some technical skills to install but it’s not too bad. The app itself is pretty good but it does have some bugs here and there. A few places I set defaults for a device and saved and the settings disappeared. Overall,I’m happy with the new remote. I talked with the company that originally installed the home theater and they wanted to use control4. I didn’t want to use a closed custom solution. Simple control seems to be the best for do it yourselfers.
Gone down hill big time!
by Ipadave on 2019/04/22 02:38
This app used to be awesome and at it worst pretty darn good. Now it’s over priced and as user friendly as windows 8. This app used to make a great coffee table iPad remote. Now there is so much wasted space, and simple tasks take 2 or 3 taps, that used to just take one.
The best. Hands down!
by DD-BBB on 2019/04/17 01:08
It’s all in the name. The simplest, best controller for you entertainment system and complete home their is. Definitely worth the investment and subscription. Great fast support and updates that are filled with new features and constant fixes to make it better and better. Don’t hesitate. Get this.
The worst! BEWARE!
by Tedhtl on 2019/04/12 20:44
I used the previous app for many years, and it was great! This new app is ugly, unresponsive, and full of bugs. My AppleTV now randomly turns on the TV. Technical support is worthless. I’ve spent days reprogramming the new app to be even close to workable, and it’s still a mess. No one in my family can figure out this new app, so now there’re furious with me. And, the worst? I had paid for a full year of service for the old app. The developers refused to transfer the purchase. Apple had to step in and grant a special refund. Run from these people...
Easily the worst automation control on iOS
by therealJesse on 2019/04/08 21:13
I’m done about 10 professional home automation installs and dealing with this company is by far the most painful thing I’ve ever experienced. As someone who use this when it was still “roomie remote”, I had to rebuy the application that I already paid for at least once. Expect to do it again when they change formats. Got anything not overly nice to say? Don’t say it on Twitter or the owner will immediately block you. No refund nothing. Horrible service, serviceable product who’s about to get its lunch eaten by HomeKit and google home. Only an idiot would buy this now.
Watch your billing, folks!
by Not quite your average Joe on 2019/03/18 00:35
As they have updated their app, they’ve changed names and logos throughout time. The only problem is I discovered they have been charging me yearly under all 3 iterations.
Terrible company be cautious
by moores351 on 2019/03/10 23:52
I spent approximately $100 for the first version of this app. They’ve disabled the functionality of this app and told me it’s broken and no longer works but I can download their new version and pay a monthly service so I can get back what I already paid for. No thank you not the type of company I’ll be doing any future business with. No customer loyalty.
Just upgraded from v4.5
by UserInWisconsin on 2019/03/09 21:50
As of Jan 2019 my old Roomie Service subscription ended (was $17 annually) without the ability to renew or upgrade so I’m forced to move to version 5 now ($49) to maintain the ability to add new devices and use triggers. I plan to maintain v4.5 on several older iPad devices which have been dedicated remotes and use a script to keep triggers in sync between the 2 environments. (2 MAC OS hubs, 1 for each version) My advice for new users; the Simple Control functionality of controlling devices is great but you’ll need to deal with the limitations of the v5 UI. I’ve looked at alternatives to Simple Control that are reasonably priced but I haven’t come across anything I like (yet). Support when I needed help in the past was typically good and responded quickly (sometimes within minutes). Documentation is ok but I haven’t been able to find answers to some of my concerns. One of the main reasons I had over 200 custom remotes in v4 was to have unique volume controls for each room (especially needed when having multiple TVs in a room) which I had to repeat for each activity. Ideally in v5 I would sense the best place for this is with a single custom module that could be added to each activity or have the volume controls for each device in the room appear on the home bar. It’s only been a few days so maybe the functionality already exists but I would hope I could do the same with lights specific to each room. Pros -Upgrading from previous version was painless. -Great device control -Large inventory of devices Cons -V5 Home bar seems to be useless or not intuitive. -Colorless UI with limited icons, adding custom images is possible but not too easy -On an iPad; v5 does not use the full resolution of the device, I prefer seeing more and scrolling less. It reminds me of standard VGA mode on Windows. Other -I would have preferred to pay double to maintain functionality and the UI of v4.5 Update (after about a week) -I’m getting used to the new UI and find it easier to move around in now. -Things are better once I figured out how to expand the commands within the activities. I didn’t see it documented and it wasn’t intuitive. Click the icon to the left of the device... -I find myself going from activity to the room frequently to run inline activities such as light and volume controls specific to the room. In v4 the activity list was visible while the remote was open. -I had to adjust a few toggle activities that were not working correctly. -I like the new Simple Home view for a summary of active processes. -The backup process is quick and easy. I used restore without any issues. -Remote access works great. -I look forward to new updates that improve user interaction and ease of making global changes.
Miss the old Roomie Remote!
by rwfastrax on 2019/02/10 21:21
I would have reviewed the old Roomie Remote at 5 stars, but I don’t like what they’ve done at all. I’ve found myself using my individual remotes a lot more and “Simple” Control less and less. Looking for alternatives.
A must have Smart Home Solution
by HandyAl86 on 2019/02/06 01:05
I have been a user of this service/app and while it does involve a learning curve, the investment of your time to configure the platform is well worth it. They have a comprehensive setup guide and compatibility chart which was very helpful. Most of the configuration is intuitive through a visual interface. As far as competitors - I think Simple Control is the perfect balance between customizable and ease of configuration. Other solutions I have research are far lacking the range of devices supported and in a world of new tech constantly entering the market, I can count on Simple Control to integrate into the platform. Other solutions I have seen require some coding or large investment with little flexibility to make quick changes. There are many bad reviews around the time of a re-vamp. I agree the solution was garbage when the transition to version 5 occurred. They have since released many improvements which makes the app way more stable and powerful than the original. 4 stars because there is still some room for improving panel design customization and adding more overall color to the look.
It was great
by Mkb20191978 on 2019/02/02 00:33
Had the original version of the app and it was great. Was forced to the new app and it is very confusing and couldn’t get any help setting things up. Got a Harmony remote and it’s not as cool as the old app but it works plain and simple.
Convoluted Control
by 70watts on 2019/01/31 23:45
Paid for simple service since 2015. Was ok with spending hours on the GUI programming, and custom building codes, because it worked. Now I have 3 weird versions of the same app that all half work. I cannot even backup the configuration I spent so long programming. Its become easier to stand up, go to the device, and manually control it. I genuinely want to like this App. It was good when it worked.
Extortionate pricing! No option to permanently upgrade devices, can cost $100 per year!!
by Patrickl27 on 2019/01/27 17:33
This app could be great, but the greed of the developers with their subscription model makes it unusable. Even their $300 product doesn't work forever, but requires continuous payment after 3 years! If they had an option to permanently purchase additional devices, as they used to back when they were Roomie Remote, this could be great. But I refuse to pay recurring fees forever for a remote app I probably won't ever use.
Or free requires paid subscription to do anything other than download

New app is a scam
by Best way to automate anything on 2019/01/14 01:51
The old roomie remote worked great for years. Ever since SimpleControl it’s just turned into a giant scam. I’ve been double or triple billed. The app continually changes, all of a sudden they will start charging for something like guides then I get to spend a week trying to get ahold of someone to explain I bought a lifetime subscription that was supposed to include that service. As of now I just want to be done with them.
1 star is too generous
by Curt.P on 2019/01/06 16:10

Vera plus
by Captanbipto on 2019/01/06 15:04
This app recognizes and allows you to control Vera,s and HomeKit devices but it has a poor interface and is to complex for average users out of 4 family members all of them including myself would rather just use separate app’s.
Just keeps getting worse
by 62willys on 2019/01/03 02:13
Been using this since it was Roomie. Roomie did what it was intended to do and it did it well. This latest crap of an app has charged me 3 times this year for 1 subscription that is BUGGY. When they tried to build a simple to use remote it was great but now they are trying to branch out into things they know NOTHING about and the simple remote is long gone. BTW when you contact support because they’ve ripped you off and charged you 3 times instead of the expected and required 1 charge, they blame apple. Apple didn’t build this piece of crap and rip me off, they did. Update. Ip compatibility list is way off. Purchased 3 TVs off their list. All TVs listed by make and model on other ip control list. NONE work on this. Tech support is downright abusive. Update. Yes, contacted tech support . Believe the bad reviews they truly are abusive.
Almost perfect
by Jhanrahan82 on 2019/01/02 01:28
I’ve been a subscribing customer since the Roomie days. And now with the boom of home automation and IoT devices, this app has taken on a whole new life! I recently upgraded to Simple Control 5 so I could control my A/V with Alexa voice commands. Upgrading was a learning curve, but that’s to be expected with a major app overhaul. Works great! Love the new interface (now that I’m used to is). But you must have a dedicated iDevice (I'm using an old iPhone 6s) as your Simple Control. Even though I’m very tech literate, it took a bit of finagling to get it working. But it does work. Just stick with it, read the help forums, and email Simple Control support, who are super responsive!
Don’t waste your money
by bluwake on 2018/12/31 12:49
Great that they offer a free trial, only after you’ve signed up for a subscription service. Why not offer the free trial before having to subscribe...? Because it’s a terrible app that is frustrating to use and there are other apps that are free that work better. Don’t let them fool you. I just paid $20 for something I will never use.
Terrible update
by ggny on 2018/12/27 15:29
The old Simple Control was easily configurable and stable. Version 5 is a disaster of design and performance - configurations change on their own (something that worked on Monday doesn’t on Tuesday) remotes say Offline with no clear way of fixing, Simple Hub is a confusing mess, and you are severely limited in terms of customarily unless you start from scratch (which Simple Control does not recommend Their support is very poor and the owner is quite arrogant - I now have two rooms that were working fine under version 4 which are completely broken under Strongly do not recommend.

Simple idea but buggy and frustrating
by LASNYC on 2018/11/25 20:59
******Update Nov 2018. ****** After waiting several months and for several updates to go by, the app still has problems connecting to Apple TVs. The code pops up on the screen, but after entering it, the devices still do not communicate. Have tried everything. Developer blames Apple, but that excuse can only be used so much. ******************************* Idea: 5 stars Setup: 2 stars Customization: 2 stars Esthetics: 3 stars Customer support: 1 star I set this up for a client and grew several white hairs in the process. It takes longer than their free trial duration to get setup well in a more complex environment. I say complex, but very straight forward. Television AV Receiver SONOS Cable box Incredible it was the simple tasks that the app fails at the most. One of the activities would not want to change names. Also, an Apple TV kept asking for pairing over and over. I purchased 2 of the WiFi blasters and like them. Setting them up was straight forward. But what is the point of having a smart remote if it fails at the most basic tasks? I can’t even tell you if their customer support would know how to address these issues because the only interact via email or schedule a call for several days in the future. If you want immediate satisfaction, this is NOT for you! I’d recommend getting and Interset 422 Universal remote from Amazon. But if you like pain, and are very patient (and a bit lucky) you might get all your devices in there and working. Some free advice for Roomie: improve customer support (or make the trial a month at least) Add customization of the remotes. That legacy stuff is pure crap and looks like it too (They are working on this, I believe) Allow having two separate volume controls on the same pane. If someone uses a receiver, they need to control the receiver and the source (SONOS, for example). I am REALLY hoping this app improves, along with their support because there is nothing better out there. If there was, I would waste my time writing this review and would instead be using something else.

by Lamb310 on 2018/10/28 04:44
We have been a customer for years, but since they updated the app it’s been a total nightmare. Once a month the app doesn’t work, which I think has to do with the subscription service. I’m just so incredibly frustrated that the app craps out every month. Restoring purchases does not work. If you need help through customer service, you will get automatic replies. There are plenty of other apps out there. Best to look elsewhere.
A downgrade from the pre v5 version
by Bcdavis75 on 2018/10/15 02:15
I have really tried to give the redone app a chance, but for a second time I got a throw in the towel. Personally I find just about everything in this app far less intuitive Then the prior version. This is extremely disappointing given how useful the app has been over the years. I’ll keep trying but I expect to keep being frustrated
App should be named mess not simple
by The77Ronin on 2018/10/12 01:55
This app is anything but simple, the UI is a train wreck, and it just doesn’t do anything well enough to warrant using it, can’t use it to power on/off some devices, so what’s the point if I need my factory remote still?
Stands Alone
by CA-Techie on 2018/10/10 01:27
This app is the Hotness. I have purchased many iOS devices specifically to run this app through the house using iPad Minis on side tables or wall mounted. It can be daunting how much time is spent building a whole home system that is broadly automated, but it's quite rewarding and this app is so much more straightforward than other systems.
Long time user

Long time user. Some functionality has changed so new app takes some getting used to, but probably the most comprehensive app for the cost. A few things I would like to work differently and hope to see those in upcoming releases but otherwise I believe this app has the greatest functionality and integration you will find for the cost

Really look close at their documentation to see if it makes since. Keep in mind this is not for the average person with an average understanding. This app when it was formerly Roomie Remote was very good and forward thinking. The money grab with paying for hubs and subscriptions, disabling Dropbox support and confusing app upgrades (software upgrade 5) has left me to abandon the platform. Disdain and badmouthing of customers from CEO were final straw. Would not recommend.
The worst upgrade of all time

This new app is garbage at best. The visual is a 180 from the odd one and the ease of use is a zero. Hate it.

Was “Horrible Update”
by MacIntyre on 2018/09/23 17:23
Update: We’ve gotten used to the new interface (in fact my wife now prefers it) and since they’ve added the ability to now edit it - it’s better. I would prefer the ability to customize more, but honestly, that’s not that big a deal. Still doesn’t work in my home office as my TV and the remote (and Denon) all get out of sync, but I suspect that’s more my fault (and Samsung’s). However, I did want to comment on support. I had an issue with renewal of my subscription that was preventing the app from supporting our house any more. I submitted a support ticket. I had a response and the issue was fixed inside of 5 minutes. That earned a solid change in ratings from me. OLD REVIEW: It either turns off my Samsung TV when I just want to switch inputs, or won’t turn it on at all. It doesn’t appear to respect the track power state setting for a device (2017 Samsung Q7 QLED). This worked under version 4.x. My wife had a pop up activity with her favorite channels, that now doesn’t work the same, she basically has to use a favorite guide, which is a lot slower. New interface has a lot of buttons we’re not ever going to use and the activity panel editor is not available yet. This new interface has done nothing but confuse my wife, I’m going to have to roll back to version 4.
What is this?

This app is about as bad as it gets. It is absolutely nothing like Roomie Remote and the simplest of things are incredibly difficult to figure out and all videos on how to set it up are outdated. EXTREMELY FRUSTRATING!!!

Simply Worthless
by ernietsg on 2018/08/19 21:22
Nothing simple about using it and when after requesting a set of instructions how to use this app I was sent to a link which reads more like marketing rather how to use . . . no simple instructions for me. Maybe for an IT type person but for me it is less work to use the TV remote.
Great remote app!

Love this remote app. It is easy to setup and works great. I do wish it had support for controlling Alexa lights, but thus far I've been able to live without that
Continues to advance
by Daveman918 on 2018/08/03 01:26
I continue to be impressed with the advancement that the SimpleControl team is making. The addition of customizations to the new user interface results in an app that rivals the nicest home automation vendors. Some additional work to integrate with Siri and support of a few more whole home audio vendors with functionality equal to SCs Sonos implementation will make this the clear choice for Apple ecosystem users.
Love it!
by melli-belle on 2018/07/20 17:44
They added remote design editing in this new release! As with any automation system you gotta do your research and take the time to learn it. But, there is nothing like this DIY friendly home automation app out there with the guides and quick access smart home devices. It is feature rich and can control your whole home not just one room.

I have been a user since the Roomie Remote days. I spent hours configuring it just the way I wanted it. I must have received an automatic update the other day and now it claims my “Legacy Design” is no longer supported. I am not impressed with the new interface - especially since it was just dumped on me and it is not backwards compatible. I will not renew my subscription.

Having a tough time setting this remote up. Graphics are like a 2 year old design them. Colorless bland and no pop. Tried to load png color icons and all I got was a white box. Can’t see full titles in menu selections on my iphone. Seamed SimpleControl isn’t that simple. Guess I have to get my white hat on and do some programming and figure it out all over again. Just like I did for pass updates. Least in the pass, there were some videos on the basic setups By the way, how do you delete an Activity. Now I have 4 watch tv, which I don’t need.
Remote completely changed
by philhu on 2018/07/15 13:08
When this was roomie, i loved it Now it has turned i to a completely differrnt product. No more custom remotes. I know they have action panels but i spent 100 of hours making remotes and buttons The only reason the old was discontinued was dropbox changed there format Well they should support both v4 and v5 This new system has a very steep learning curve. And i cant find a way to use custom serial and my old seems to have stop working
Thumbs up!
by Eeat on 2018/07/14 15:52
Even if there are quirks, and there are but the devs always iron them out, this is the best in its class in the App Store. With the exception of the high dollar control systems, ie crestron, I have tried virtually every app in this category and nothing comes close. This is subscription based but as long as improvements keep coming it is a small price to pay imo. This does take a small amount of tech savvy to get going but once done you can have a total home control at a fraction of what a custom automation system cost. Keep up the great work!
The Best Remote Control App
by manojjpatel on 2018/07/13 00:11
This the best remote control app, fantastic alternative to Control 4, and Logitech is not even close to this app. Once you get the know-how of this app, it’s the best and most reliable. Add iTach blaster or Simple Blaster for old devices and you have a complete Remote. Yearly Subscription is reasonable and glad they are going with this business modal. So they can stay in business for long... I am using this app six years now (older for five years)...
What?

Pretty neat how this update rendered the app completely useless to control my stuff. Many many hours getting it to work just right, ruined. Canceling subscription and moving on....

by Mel Greenway on 2018/07/11 13:32
I found Simple Control very useful for over a year. The new interface, however, takes away so much functionality and is so non intuitive as to render the app useless. I’m very disappointed as this is my primary means of controlling my multi zone stereo and entertainment center. Please bring back the visibility that the legacy interface offered. The new interface is a disaster. I speak from the perspective of an engineer with many years of app dev and UI experience

Don’t Believe the Bad Reviews
by Chris MPLS on 2018/06/03 03:14
I really can’t understand the bad reviews on this app, most of which seem to be criticism toward the new interface or just negative because this is a subscription based app. I personally love the new interface and to call it “90’s” as one other reviewer put it is so far off base the review should be removed. The new interface is elegant and leaps and bounds better than the previous version. I’ve been a fan of this app since the Roomie days and am so happy to see that it’s still in active development. Everything for me just works and works well. If I had a criticism though, I would like to see the ability to add a device to the activity screen so I can easily pull up the remote for a certain device without having to dig for it in the device menu and the hit “test”. That part is not very intuitive. Also, the hub syncing functionality to sync settings between devices is super confusing, not intuitive and hopefully this can be improved in a future release. Aside from these nits, this app is amazing and has so many surprising features built in. Overall very impressed.

Pay monthly for a remote control...
by Nickbard on 2018/02/25 22:57
The Roomie app was great. You could just purchase what you need and that's it. They discontinued the Roomie app, just to charge you again, but now monthly!!! I bought another app and had to make my whole configuration again, but at least I am not paying a subscription to use a remote control!!!
Don’t try unless ready to pay
by TheHeavyWriter on 2018/02/13 15:01
You can’t just try the app, you need to start an account with them as soon as you open the app and to add devices you choose a plan depending on how many devices you need. Plans start at $1.99 a month or a $20 yearly payment. Very disappointed you can’t just try the app without all that for at least 1 device to try it out
Powerful, Elegant, a Gem
by Chuckk9032 on 2018/02/05 04:12
If you’ve tried to buy or program a truly universal control center for A/V and other devices, you know that it’s expensive, time-consuming, and frequently makes you constantly reliant on systems integrators. I’ve used universal remotes to professional automation controllers and this product rises above everything in my opinion. And the fact that it can use IP control makes it highly reliable compared with IR and RF solutions, although Simple can use those connection techniques as well. The only shortfall I can see for now is the lack of a hardware device with hard buttons, but the advantages of this solution far outweigh that shortcoming. Support is outstanding - responsive and knowledgeable. How often do you see this in a consumer product? It’s easy to see this software core being built into OEM products someday. They have solved many of the difficult issues surrounding integrating many products with dissimilar interfaces and are dedicated to ensuring the product is successfully used by its customers. Version 5 is a significant step up from Version 4, which was a big improvement from the days of Roomie Remote. The team is clearly dedicated to constantly improving their offerings. I’ve never written such a positive review before, but these guys deserve it. I really appreciate what they have accomplished.
New Version overly complicated.
by pandbs on 2018/02/01 13:07
It seems like the new version is overthought. Alexa integration doesn’t work and it is difficult to navigate. In addition running the Hub on an appleTV is worthless since appleTV apps cannot automatically open on startup.
A big leap backward
by Steve C. on 2018/01/28 15:36
I’ve be a user for close to ten years from the early Roomie Remote days. I was generally very happy with version 4.5.11 though always hopeful for some improvements. This version 5 is a complete disappointment. The interface design is very poor. My family hates it and doesn’t want to use it. It is not intuitive. I know how to use it but find it hard to navigate and terrible to use and look it. I’ll stick with the old version and look for an alternative. I just don’t understand dumping the interface. To release it without the ability to edit the remote designs is just dump and half baked. Very disappointed.
Long Time User, now disappointed
by spinnbarkeit on 2018/01/23 09:10
I have been using this app extensively (50+ devices) since it was Roomie Remote. Very disappointed in the new design. If you compare the old design to the new design with someone who has never seen either if them, they would swear that the new version is the older of the two. Also, when upgrading, many of my functions (especially including Roku) did not transfer to the new app. Last, simple hub apparently needs to be upgraded as well, but when it asks ‘Upgrade Now?’ It doesn’t give you the option to say yes or no... just an option to ‘skip this version’ or ‘learn more...’ Please consider a change back to the old GUI. Far more intuitive, better layout, and more closely mimics an actual remote control... Which, after all, is the whole point... right?
Major Disappointment...
by Rlrnetwork on 2018/01/21 17:23
This app "upgrade" is a major disappointment in many areas. Let me start by saying I've been using roomie remote subscriber for many years with a paid subscription and have always loved the app until they pulled a fast one. They decided to come out with an upgraded version 5 and instead of allowing the folks with the existing version 4 to continue using the app and keeping it on the App Store they revamped it to be a legacy app with a new name (now ver.4.11) and now you need to pay $9.99 if you deleted it from your device or want to add to another device on your same account as the previous version is no longer available in the App Store. This is BS on their part and completely unfair. In addition the user interface has taken a major step backwards and modifying a devices remote or activity is totally cumbersome at this point. They have also revised the rooms setup which you now have no option to remove if you choose not to use it. I also went to install the new version on my wife's ipad (because I do not want to pay $9.99 for the old 'legacy' version which I already own on another device), and I am out of luck because it now requires iOS 11 for the new "free subscription only" version so I am out of luck. I feel I have paid for an app that I no longer have access to on the App Store unless I want to pay an additional $9.99 as well as the monthly fee I am currently paying which I will not do. I think I am going to find an alternative to this app as they have really done an injustice to their long time subscribers. Rob

Complete garbage
by Seijai2000 on 2017/12/27 00:54
This new look and control is awful. Give me back something that doesn’t look like a 2nd grade coloring contest winner developed it. You charge monthly fees to come up with this....that’s poor. Documentation lacks and setting up insteon and other services is a complete joke. There are are no setup guides and if this isn’t your full time job you are out of luck. Hate the lack of buttons and knowing what is or isn’t supposed to be one when all there is is text. It definitely feels a big step backwards.

I used to be a long time roomie remote user until their licensing model became unreasonable and I jumped ship to HomeKit and Homebridge (adds HomeKit support for non HomeKit enabled devices such as the iTach). This has been working reasonably well for me. I decided to sign up for a trial of this new release of Simple Control out of curiosity, and it’s very much a step in the right direction. Simplified and intuitive UI and IP control for non-HomeKit enabled devices are the biggest differentiators. Unfortunately there are a few issues/gaps causing me to lean towards canceling the service before my trial is up: 1. Detects all my HomeKit devices, but doesn’t display device status for them. I have leak, air quality, occupancy, smoke, and carbon monoxide sensors which the app correctly detects and allows me to add as HomeKit devices. But once added there’s no way for me to see the status of those sensors, so I have to load the Apple Home app or the Elgato Eve app to see that info. This is the biggest downside to the app. It can’t be an all-in-one “Simple Control” solution for HomeKit yet. 2. Confusion around iTach devices. I have two. I’m sure there are other customers who have far more. The “fine print” seems to indicate that support for these devices is being deprecated, but a clear explanation and alternative are not presented. It would be good for the developer to post a dedicated page discussing decisions which have the potential to affect a large percentage of their user base. “Fine print” isn’t really the best way to communicate such a major feature deprecation. 3. HomeKit scene integration. I have many HomeKit scenes and there doesn’t seem to be a way to leverage those scenes with Simple Control. It seems I have to create activities to accomplish the same thing, which means they’re not controllable with Siri. This makes sense when activities include actions for IP-controlled devices that aren’t HomeKit enabled, but it would be helpful to have scene access within the app regardless. It would also be helpful to allow activities to trigger HomeKit scenes so that exiting automations could be leveraged.
Directv hr44-500 support
by JonnyCanada on 2017/12/23 16:57
Was super excited to have control of my tv and directv but directv is not working through this app. I have connected it correctly and the IP address is the same (I can even read my recordings on the app) but it does not work my directv at all. I would rate this higher and recommend this app to a lot of people if this could get resolved
Two steps forward one step back
by nguyenhm16 on 2017/12/22 13:46
Good: Been a user since it was Roomie Remote and I like the new interface, improved AppleTV support, and HomeKit integration, which has been a long time coming. I can now fully dedicate an iPad as a remote control, leave it on guided access and control my home theater and the lights throughout the house. Meh: Still kinda unintuitive to set up, and synchronizing between multiple devices is still a trial and error process. Bad: tears through the battery like it was going out of style on two iPads (pro and a mini 2) and an iPhone 6S Plus. Battery on iPad mini 2 running Simple Control on Guided Access, sitting there doing nothing, won’t last a day.
Stupid Pricing Structure.
by landocarlesien on 2017/12/20 00:36
No one wants to worry about the number devices. You should just charge a monthly/quartetly/yearly structure regardless of number of devices.

Great software however, I have it a 2 Star because the support is awful. They just give canned responses or simple one line responses that make no sense and often don’t even address the question. Their user forum is moderated, so there is no open dialog and it’s hard to get help from other customers.

Worth the effort

Previous owner of an Elan system. Hated not being able to upgrade and control my own system. Also hated the enormous cost associated with repairs/tweaks/upgrades. This app/software was able to utilize almost 90% of my old equipment and now I have full control. Many things I didn’t have before like amazing Apple integration. With Hey Siri I can turn on/off any TV/entertainment system. I can also control from my watch! Took me a few days to learn how to use the software but it was time well spent. Be patient with it and it will be worth the effort.

by Lamb310 on 2018/10/28 04:44
We have been a customer for years, but since they updated the app it’s been a total nightmare. Once a month the app doesn’t work, which I think has to do with the subscription service. I’m just so incredibly frustrated that the app craps out every month. Restoring purchases does not work. If you need help through customer service, you will get automatic replies. There are plenty of other apps out there. Best to look elsewhere.
App is great - business model changes are frustrating

This app is great if you love to tinker with tech. The device and service integrations are numerous and the app is incredibly flexible. I do think you need to be somewhat of a techie as it does require setup. My only frustration is with their changing business models. I've been a long-time subscriber and it is a pain to navigate the transition from roomie, to simple control, and back to roomie. But the tech is rock solid, so I'm still a fan.
Long time user
by montood on 2018/10/09 22:11
Long time user. Some functionality has changed so new app takes some getting used to, but probably the most comprehensive app for the cost. A few things I would like to work differently and hope to see those in upcoming releases but otherwise I believe this app has the greatest functionality and integration you will find for the cost
The worst! BEWARE!
by Tedhtl on 2019/04/12 20:44
I used the previous app for many years, and it was great!
Shame
Great system
by Apprweb on 2019/07/27 15:14
It takes a little work to customize, once you set it up it’s flawless. Runs on all my iPads and phones around the house and keeps track of status. When you turn something on or off, every phone or pad is updated and in sync.
The best. Hands down!
by DD-BBB on 2019/04/17 01:08
It’s all in the name. The simplest, best controller for you entertainment system and complete home their is. Definitely worth the investment and subscription. Great fast support and updates that are filled with new features and constant fixes to make it better and better. Don’t hesitate. Get this.
Stay away
by BrainsLink on 2020/02/10 17:15
This app is okay, not great but good enough. The problem is the company behind the app. They have changed direction twice since I’ve been using their products. Each time, the app is completely rewritten and renamed. Each time, the cost increases and new problems appear. The company is very poorly managed and I have to strongly condemn their behavior. Do not use this app!
Watch your billing, folks!
by Not quite your average Joe on 2019/03/18 00:35
As they have updated their app, they’ve changed names and logos throughout time. The only problem is I discovered they have been charging me yearly under all 3 iterations.
Great system, need more training videos
by ltcav on 2018/12/12 17:12
Cool system, wish they had more online videos or training of advanced topics. I feel with training I could do much more. I’d even subscribe for that!
Not Simple. Expensive.
by jon617 on 2019/05/11 14:17
Used the old Roomie and Simple Control on my other devices, but thought I’d try this new version on my new iPad. It’s not intuitive, and keeps insisting I subscribe to monthly payments to do what their old apps did for free. Most of the manual settings are gone, and this app is now completely useless without paying money every month.
Love Simple Control!
by jensen5555 on 2018/11/25 18:55
Great App that has plenty of integrations into all the most popular brands. Simple blasters work great! Use it to run the whole house!
Vera plus
by Captanbipto on 2019/01/06 15:04
This app recognizes and allows you to control Vera,s and HomeKit devices but it has a poor interface and is to complex for average users out of 4 family members all of them including myself would rather just use separate app’s.
Setup
by 320drvr on 2019/07/30 16:56
Works well when setup. Some videos demoing the setup would be extremely helpful esp. for the more complicated setups esp. switches and lighting.
Support is horrendous
by fb*mb* on 2019/08/28 21:19
The product is nice but don’t try to get any help from support, you are way to much trouble to them, hey you are only the reason why they have a job but who cares, why should they worry about customer issues or satisfaction!
Intuitive
by Jfsh56 on 2018/11/15 01:46
I love this system! Not sure there is a true competitor.
Must Have for Home Entertainment
by Stevedryfuse on 2019/09/24 02:00
Great for complete Control of your Audioe and Video
Long time user will find something else
by Windsurfer-b on 2019/09/15 23:08
This app now requires a subscription. I have spent quite a bit of money when it was still roomie remote. There are too many good competitors to be treated like this.
It was great
by Mkb20191978 on 2019/02/02 00:33
Had the original version of the app and it was great. Was forced to the new app and it is very confusing and couldn’t get any help setting things up. Got a Harmony remote and it’s not as cool as the old app but it works plain and simple.
1 star is too generous
by Curt.P on 2019/01/06 16:10
Can’t even get past the subscribe button. Free trial doesn’t work, no options when logging into website and can’t even pay to use it.
No instructions on how to renew annual subscription
by customer909 on 2019/07/30 00:32
I contacted them twice through the app as they require. No reply. I like the app but their customer service is non-existent. Apple stopped auto-renewals (shame on you Apple). How do I renew? No clue.
Awful
by dudeithedude on 2018/12/09 15:32
Keeps directing you to a subscription plan Before you are able to test it out And see if it works
A hundred bucks a year? No thanks!
by happy2harris on 2019/08/12 02:16
Downloaded this because it said it supported Roku and apple watch. It can’t control Roku without a $100 per year subscription. Forget it.
Or free requires paid subscription to do anything other than download
by fool of me on 2019/01/21 00:51
