Darkr - Vintage BW Film Editor
Description
3 million downloads Featured as Today's app in many countries and is the perfect app for learning photography. "Darkr actually taught us how to frame pictures better" - AppleInsider Have you ever dreamt of trying an old darkroom, but don't have the equipment nor the time? Now you can, and without getting wet. DARKROOM In a fun and intuitive way you will pick the strip that has the best time and contrast. And just like a real darkroom, you can make parts of the image brighter and darker by blocking or adding more light to the image. You will be presented in a very easy way with lots of tutorials on how to use the tools. The images will only be in black and white (but you may tone them). DARKROOM FEATURES + Develop either your images from your camera-roll or taken by the Large-Format camera + Only Black & White + Stripes - As in a real darkroom you'll have to find the best strip. It will be challenging, fun and very powerful + Crop / Rotate - Both crop and rotate the image in the same tool + Dodge - Make a selected part of the image brighter. + Burn - Make a selected part of the image darker + Blur - Enhance the background with some beautiful blurriness. + Tone - Tone the images with various strength. The toners that can be used are Selenium, Cyanotype and Sepia. + Layers - You can add as many effects as you want. Each effect will be treated as a layer that can be edited, deleted and changed its visibility. + Zoom - You can zoom the image ten times. This will make it really easy to make the detailed work. + OpenGL - Darkr uses OpenGL, the drawing is fast and very fluid. CAMERA By shooting with a large-format camera where the image is upside-down you will actually get more control over the image. The camera is only manual and back in the old days you could not even zoom with the camera, you had to walk. You will be forced to slow down the process and by doing so, your photographs will be so much better. At first it may feel a bit odd to look at the upside-down image and it can even be a bit challanging to know if you should move the camera to the left or right when framing the image. Sometimes you will even laugh at yourself, but the more you use it, the less you will even have to think about it. MORE CAMERA-MODELS Darkr has now added two more camera-models. + Medium-format which will produce a square image and just as the large-format camera it is manual. + Small-format which is a real basic point and shoot camera where you pretty much only shoot at what you see. Nothing to set up with, nor zoom. CAMERA FEATURES + Manual - Just as in a real old analog camera, it is only manual + Shutter / ISO - You will set these individually + Focus - With a beautiful crafted loupe, you will get full control over the sharpness + Tilt / Shift - Just as a large-format camera you will be able to straight up any lines + 4x5" - The negative's size will be in the 4x5-ratio as the most popular large-format camera does SHARE You can naturally share both the negatives and prints. You can optimize the resolution to lots of social media's sites like Facebook, Instagram, Twitter SUPPORT We are eager to hear from you. We just love to hear both good stuff and bad stuff. And it's much likely that your opinion will be added into the next update. Please don't hesitate to contact us at: support@miiam.net

love the composition and darkroom tutorials but wish the picture taking app had more setting control and actually simulated the film selected as well as info on how to use the app
This has brought me back to the fundamentals
by LeapingPenguin on 2019/12/15 16:22
I’ve been using Darkr for a couple of years and from the beginning loved how it takes me back to when Inused to shoot with film and my old 4x5 rail camera. Certainly it has some limitations I suspect because of the limitations of the lens on a phone but I have on occasion been able to capture some pretty amazing images if I do say so myself. There is a problem as of today (Dec 15, 2019). There is a bug in the most recent update that causes it to crash right after pressing the shutter release. And it does not keep the photo after the crash as well. Hope you can find the bug soon. Love using your app.

Move negatives?
by Jef-g on 2019/10/19 11:26
I LOVE this app overall. Rekindling my love for photo. But... is there a way to move negatives from one device to another? If so, I haven’t figured it out yet. 5 stars easily if there’s a way to do that. I’d like to take the pics with my phone and do the darkroom work on iPad Pro...
I see
by Bev09again on 2019/10/12 16:48
Okay, let me see if I’ve got this straight. The only lens that can be used with the free version is the pocket camera with a viewfinder roughly 3/8” x 1/5”, which can’t be enlarged. Everything else is an in-app purchase with no way to try it out ahead of time. That’s an easy decision. Delete!
Next Level
by chazatlas on 2019/08/29 23:24
This is not simply a app featuring various black and white settings no this is like becoming a professional.
Very disappointed
by video228753790643 on 2019/08/24 13:29
I assumed (my fault) you could take photos already taken and adjust them to look old. What a waste of money
Interesting, but dodge and burn have issues
by camfiend on 2019/08/04 17:49
I love that this app really does bring us back into the darkroom. However, when doing detailed work with dodge and burn, every time I use two fingers to enlarge the image, the mask disappears. Hope it’s fixed in the next upgrade!
Simply incredible

Wonderful...!
by jonastauber on 2019/05/20 15:27
Takes patience, like it used to back when we developed prints in a darkroom, to learn the aspects of the app. Rare commodity these days and much appreciated.

Brings me back to my darkroom days
by Marymo123 on 2019/05/05 00:49
I’ve only just started playing around with this but I think it has great potential. I think anyone that has ever done traditional black and white darkroom work will feel right at home. It is a great way for others to feel what it was like without the chemicals! There are also a lot of good pointers about improving your photos with compositional pointers.
Stand out
by Izzy013 on 2019/05/04 16:52
I’ve done some dark room fun in college, loved it, since then looked for apps that offered the same classic looks to digital media, and I found this beauty! I adore this app and if I could support it multiple times, I would, I love it! Easy set up, controls, and a great tribute to dark rooms in this digital age. Keep up the great work!
Can’t even give you a demo.
by Klytana on 2019/03/24 06:53
Hey, it’s “Everything is free to try for an hour”, but we have to collect money first, because you know, I promise you will love it! I can’t even try to edit a picture how do I going to pay $1.99 for this, $3.99 for the best deal!!!! Sound like a scam and I’m not gonna bother to try.
Seriously
by Bo Bilstrup on 2019/03/14 20:34
Come on we are in 2019, why digitally simulate a darkroom workflow when you have really great photo editing apps for iOS out there already. Digital is not a negative going to a paper and shouldn’t be treated as such as it just makes the digital workflow way slower and a bigger hassle. If you’re interested in Darkroom techniques it’s not that expensive to buy an enlarger and the trays plus liquid. And if you do black and white it’s really easy to also develop the film yourself. Digital is digital.

Garbage.
by r.i.t._ on 2019/02/28 17:01
This app is complete garbage. Keep actual film and dark rooms alive and go shoot with an actual film camera. It’s not that hard, nor takes that long and the “test strip” within this app is completely and utterly POINTLESS. There’s absolutely no reason for it. I would’ve given a 0 star if I could.
Just got it
by The girl3 on 2019/01/24 04:50
I really like this app so far! Really did a good job of making it work like a real darkroom! I’m so excited to use this!

Incredible pro camera app!
by Dillasaysgo on 2019/01/20 12:43
Awesome app with plenty of control over your image. Small learning curve if you don’t understand the darkroom process but it has tutorials that are simple to follow. Master the Darkr app and you will create some jaw-dropping photography.
Good but buggy
by sito-san on 2019/01/19 04:56
The viewfinder lags, and it crashes often while editing, leading to lots of frustration and lost time. Until that’s fixed there’s pretty much to reason to use this not even knowing if my progress is going to be saved. I just bought the full version too 🤷🏽‍♂️

by d35i6n on 2018/12/27 20:32
This app is seriously the best iPhone photo editing app I have come across so far. I shoot medium format film and this really is a great fun tool for the iPhone and my iPhonography. I can't speak highly enough about this app. Favorite so far for iPhone work!!!
Might be cool

Doesn’t really give you a chance to play around to see what you can do. Bummer.
Slow Down and Have Fun
by J Caruso on 2018/11/03 12:48
If you're looking for an app with excessive filters and "cutesy" overlays, this isn't it. However, if you'd like to get a hint of how it felt to shoot analogue and develop in a darkroom, this app is a fun exercise. Like film and darkroom processing, Darkr forces you to slow down and consider your photographic choices and actions. It's not a go-to, grab-a-shot-on-the-fly camera app. But it IS a way to expand your photographic thinking. And I love the medium and large format options--and Darkr's execution of them!
I dig it the most.
by Shecky60 on 2018/10/28 18:44
I’m really enjoying exploring this app and like the results so far. I’ve not printed anything yet though. I am curious and will do so soon.

DUMB... cannot be enlarged. What you see is what you can use and it ain’t much.
Great darkroom simulation
by Dr. WuTang on 2018/10/10 13:11
If you’ve made your own darkroom prints you’ll find this to be a really fun app to use. I hope the developer will add some stuff like different medium format aspect ratios, a 6x6/6x7 switch would be nice, and split toning.
Great app!!!
by bhataaqibm on 2018/10/10 08:23
Great B&W photos on the go. But what is the difference between this app and the Analogue app ?
App
by _daniixo on 2018/10/02 22:31
The fact that you get to download the app to find out , that you can’t even use it without purchasing all the edits and the filters. I think a part of it should at least be free so yea that’s why i'm rating it 1 star and deleting the app but bumped bc it seemed a good app but defiantly not worth the purchase since there’s a lot of more free advanced and professional apps

Really well done app! Authentic negative and emulsion. I love it
some problems with the app
by gz1215 on 2018/09/19 02:27
darkroom tool is cool. it is just like the real darkroom. but to be frank I feel the camera program is really hard to use. when choose the film we still can change the iso. And it’s really hard to compose and focus. when I compose is way more harder than my rolleiflex camera. And for the focus, I personally suggest add the vibration function.

This app changes my world! Finally I can capture beautiful photos of black and white on my phone, and learn to see the world through a softer light. Thanks for making a quality product, which I will be upgrading to the fully paid feature soon. Food for thought: a pinhole camera mode. Thanks!
👍🏼👍🏼
by Greg.ni on 2018/08/29 16:21
Unfortunately I never got to develop photos in a darkroom but I always thought it was cool & very interesting What you learn from this app is worth the in app purchases alone not to mention the great results you can get Looking forward to future updates keep up the good work
Love it.
by Isidro Urquia on 2018/08/10 21:29
This allows me to shoot without the expenses of actual film and large camara formats.
Amazing
by DanJFlynn on 2018/06/17 01:26
This app is great. It allows for such fine control over black and white photos, and the interface is super cool and easy to use.
My fav photography app rn
by Ezrajs on 2018/06/13 21:30
This app has a bit of a learning curve, but once you get the hang of it you will fall in love. You have a lot of control over how you want the picture to look like, including the ISO and what film you want to use (basically how you want the colors too look like).

by ItsAnAlarmItShouldJustWork on 2018/04/01 18:40
dodge and burn have no way to save, large and medium formats are completely unwieldy. I regret buying this app.
It’s ok
by Esteban_89 on 2018/03/27 06:26
Not a bad app. Sometimes would have problems with burn/dodge feature with more detailed “negatives.” Other than that and not being able to save progress for later, it’s pretty ok.
Very good
by Sarah keplar on 2018/03/22 17:34
Very easy to edit my pictures
Idea is good
by Jaxgro on 2018/03/08 01:57
I like the idea. The controls could be better if they related more to a darkroom - like “expose now” or using a tool not a digital mask to render burn and dodge.

by CK the Poet on 2018/03/01 03:44
I’ve wanted an app like this for a very long time. I stumbled upon this browsing the App Store and downloaded it instantly. It takes some getting use to but it’s worth trying. I really appreciate the tutorials. It has been a long time since I’ve been in a darkroom. For me, using Darkr is like traveling back in time to what helped me fall in love with photography, the darkroom. Thank you for this. I can’t wait to see what it develops into. Just don’t go away! lol
Excellent app - Feature request
by Jwaggone on 2018/02/11 14:06
Two things would make this app amazing. -the ability to control how color photos are converted to BW. Like you’d use a red or green filter with a color negative. -the ability to control the transparency of the cut and patch mask Tools.
Need some info...
by John Katz on 2018/02/11 05:17
So this developer has another app that looks exactly the same that goes by the name Darkr. I am certain this has been asked plenty of times, but can someone please, in simple language, explain the differences between the two if there is any? And if they are the same why not simply remove one of them from the App Store?

Great editor, somewhat misleading
by KBiz13 on 2017/12/07 01:22
Perhaps I just misread the description or I was being stupid but I thought this app could scan my actual negatives and edit them. I will no longer have access to a dark room and was excited to see an app that could help me “develop” my remaining negatives. ((Wouldn’t that be amazing? Bypassing the whole printing process then scanning and editing the photos on/to a computer THEN saving them to the cloud to post on Instagram and other platforms?!)) Anyways, it’s a good app and I recommend it for pristine black and white photography. I however will probably not use it - I’m too let down to use this at the moment.
Stunning
by MKS373 on 2017/12/05 11:29
Need some practice with the medium and large-format cameras, but this is a beautiful app made better by shooting on the iPhone X.
As close to Manual mode as you can get!
by Gomi Girl on 2017/12/04 18:52
This app is wonderful. It’s not a point & shoot process with tons of the same old filters. It’s a process of taking your time, framing your shot, and creating the image. Mocking dark room techniques, you can create beautiful black & white photographs from your phone.
Oh, I miss my dark room
by rjo3491 on 2017/12/03 18:05
I'd hoped this would be so much more. Sticking with Adobe. I get much better results.
Seems Good, But Repeatedly Demands Reviews
by mgarbowski on 2017/12/03 00:00
I’ve been playing with this app for 20-30 minutes total, and it has asked me for a review 3 times already. I’m leaving this just to make it stop, and I won’t reward their annoying intrusions with anything positive. Truth is I haven’t had enough time to form a decent opinion.

Real photography revival!
by Dead Retailer on 2017/11/29 05:02
The mystery (or is that mastery) of the art of photography comes to life with this app. This is not an app for someone who wants fun filters or easy edits. This is an app for someone who appreciates how far photography has come and wants to enjoy magic without sniffing silver halides.
Best camera app ever!!

Fascinating, Jim.
by GeniusRabbit on 2017/11/27 21:42
This takes me back to the supply room darkroom I started out in with my friends Pentax. The magic that happened in those smelly trays thrills me forty years later. Thanks for recreating the experience here: I love screwing around with exposures and emulsions. Throw in a gray filter when you get the chance so we can play around more with depth of field. Dream list- the ability to under or over develop the negatives. Hope you make millions on this fresh fresh look at photography in the digital age. Fun!

by Tsering Darge on 2017/11/19 05:46
I am a large and medium format photographer, best known for my portraiture. This is a super enjoyable app and a great way of using the iPhone camera. Among the highlights, my favorite is that the large format camera is just as fidgety as the real thing and demands a focus on composition in the same way. The film choices, dodging, burning, blurring, filtering and other options yield great photos. And you have to have a good eye, this is for people who understand, or are willing to learn, that artistry is proportional to effort. I will be eager to see how it develops over time.

If you’ve ever used large or medium format cameras and a real darkroom, you’ll love this app and the level of creative scope it gives you with just the few filter and camera options. Seems like there isn’t much here, but it does a whole lot that no other camera app will do. This app is one to add to the collection that is different from the pack.

printing was a performance art as well as alchemy. Watching the inkjet printer couldn't possibly match the sensation of watching the printed image appear in the soup of chemicals but this gets close to the expressiveness of the final product

An excellent addition to any iPhone user’s photography folder of editing applications. The full version should go without saying. In the end, we all find ourselves in a single bed. This app will do justice in helping to create and preserve those images worthy of the in between.

Fascinating, Jim.

Fun!

Just don’t go away! lol
If I could give it 10 stars...
by Dave Ritchie on 2017/11/12 00:58
If you’ve ever used large or medium format cameras and a real darkroom, you’ll love this app and the level of creative scope it gives you with just the few filter and camera options. Seems like there isn’t much here, but it does a whole lot that no other camera app will do. This app is one to add to the collection that is different from the pack.
Great results
by Daniel Calderon on 2018/09/09 20:16
This app changes my world! Finally I can capture beautiful photos of black and white on my phone, and learn to see the world through a softer light. Thanks for making a quality product, which I will be upgrading to the fully paid feature soon. Food for thought: a pinhole camera mode. Thanks!

As close to Manual mode as you can get!
by Gomi Girl on 2017/12/04 18:52
This app is wonderful. It’s not a point & shoot process with tons of the same old filters. It’s a process of taking your time, framing your shot, and creating the image. Mocking dark room techniques, you can create beautiful black & white photographs from your phone.
Seriously
by Bo Bilstrup on 2019/03/14 20:34
Come on we are in 2019, why digitally simulate a darkroom workflow when you have really great photo editing apps for iOS out there already.

This app is seriously the best iPhone photo editing app I have come across so far. I shoot medium format film and this really is a great fun tool for the iPhone and my iPhonography. I can't speak highly enough about this app. Favorite so far for iPhone work!!!

by Dillasaysgo on 2019/01/20 12:43

Real photography revival!
by Dead Retailer on 2017/11/29 05:02
The mystery (or is that mastery) of the art of photography comes to life with this app. This is not an app for someone who wants fun filters or easy edits. This is an app for someone who appreciates how far photography has come and wants to enjoy magic without sniffing silver halides.
Good but buggy
by sito-san on 2019/01/19 04:56
The viewfinder lags, and it crashes often while editing, leading to lots of frustration and lost time. Until that’s fixed there’s pretty much to reason to use this not even knowing if my progress is going to be saved. I just bought the full version too 🤷🏽‍♂️
Slow Down and Have Fun
by J Caruso on 2018/11/03 12:48
If you're looking for an app with excessive filters and "cutesy" overlays, this isn't it. And I love the medium and large format options--and Darkr's execution of them!
some problems with the app
by gz1215 on 2018/09/19 02:27
darkroom tool is cool. it is just like the real darkroom. but to be frank I feel the camera program is really hard to use. when choose the film we still can change the iso. And it’s really hard to compose and focus. when I compose is way more harder than my rolleiflex camera. And for the focus, I personally suggest add the vibration function.
Interesting, but dodge and burn have issues
by camfiend on 2019/08/04 17:49
I love that this app really does bring us back into the darkroom. However, when doing detailed work with dodge and burn, every time I use two fingers to enlarge the image, the mask disappears. Hope it’s fixed in the next upgrade!

by _daniixo on 2018/10/02 22:31
The fact that you get to download the app to find out , that you can’t even use it without purchasing all the edits and the filters. I think a part of it should at least be free so yea that’s why i'm rating it 1 star and deleting the app but bumped bc it seemed a good app but defiantly not worth the purchase since there’s a lot of more free advanced and professional apps
It’s ok
by Esteban_89 on 2018/03/27 06:26
Not a bad app. Sometimes would have problems with burn/dodge feature with more detailed “negatives.” Other than that and not being able to save progress for later, it’s pretty ok.

Garbage.
by r.i.t._ on 2019/02/28 17:01
This app is complete garbage. Keep actual film and dark rooms alive and go shoot with an actual film camera. It’s not that hard, nor takes that long and the “test strip” within this app is completely and utterly POINTLESS. There’s absolutely no reason for it. I would’ve given a 0 star if I could.

Delete!

App name
Please don't hesitate to contact us at: support@miiam.net

by LeapingPenguin on 2019/12/15 16:22
I’ve been using Darkr for a couple of years and from the beginning loved how it takes me back to when Inused to shoot with film and my old 4x5 rail camera.

Unfortunately I never got to develop photos in a darkroom but I always thought it was cool & very interesting What you learn from this app is worth the in app purchases alone not to mention the great results you can get Looking forward to future updates keep up the good work

This app has a bit of a learning curve, but once you get the hang of it you will fall in love. You have a lot of control over how you want the picture to look like, including the ISO and what film you want to use (basically how you want the colors too look like).

by Esteban_89 on 2018/03/27 06:26
Not a bad app. Sometimes would have problems with burn/dodge feature with more detailed “negatives.” Other than that and not being able to save progress for later, it’s pretty ok.

Idea is good
by Jaxgro on 2018/03/08 01:57
I like the idea. The controls could be better if they related more to a darkroom - like “expose now” or using a tool not a digital mask to render burn and dodge.

If you’ve made your own darkroom prints you’ll find this to be a really fun app to use. I hope the developer will add some stuff like different medium format aspect ratios, a 6x6/6x7 switch would be nice, and split toning.

The app is amazing and yields stunning photos when taken directly with it. Unfortunately, it seems to strip EXIF data from any existing photos it processes.

Delete!
