Excellent focus on basics and playing songs right away.
Best online instruction I have found
by mrjiggs287 on 2021/03/05 22:26
I have tried so many online lessons over the last few years. They all lacked a structure to measure my progress. Justin’s program has that structure and so much more. I am nearly done with stage 1 and after one month I have built a better foundation and made more progress than I have in the last two years of stumbling my way through other programs. Thank you for a great program, Justin!!!
Great app

App for Serious Learners
by bartend1 on 2021/03/04 00:13
While trying to learn a few chords, quick changes, strumming patterns in between phone calls and emails working at home, I found a couple websites and enrolled in a few YouTube pages.. then I stumbled upon a songbook online ..where I discovered the Justin Guitar program. I enrolled online and bought the songbook as well. .. It’s only been a couple weeks but the Justin Guitar program and app are the best guitar learning products I’ve seen. It really seems like live, private lessons. I even sent a donation.. my small part to help keep this site going. I’m psych’ed to keep going!!

Great app for learning

This app is well worth the money!! Learning guitar is hard especially for people like me who make it even harder that what it needs to be but this app has helped me so much. I’ve learned more in the 3 days that I’ve had the app than the lessons I took years ago. I like that there are many different song choices to play with and there’s video assistance if needed. If you’re thinking about getting the app I say do it it’s all worth it!!

The best guitar app for beginners like me. Justin is very knowledgeable and easy to follow
I have learned to play
by Shadess7 on 2021/02/17 23:21
First I hate writing reviews for apps but this app deserves to be rated. I consider myself tone def and always thought I wouldn’t ever really learn to play the guitar after many years trying and putting in the time. I paid for private teachers, took classes in school bought books and all that. But I always sucked and couldn’t play a song. This app has taught me where everything else has failed. I love that I can now play songs and am actually getting better. My family now enjoys hearing me play. I enjoy it. If you want to learn and struggled before then this app is worth every penny. Give it a shot and start playing.
Best guitar learning app
by PrairieDoc on 2021/02/17 14:46
This app along with Justin Guitar free webpage is the best way to learn the guitar online. Almost like having a personal tutor. The course is a step by step journey that can’t be matched. I am picking the guitar up for the first time and tried many apps, web course, YouTube video ways and found that Justin Guitar structured approach suits me the best. Can’t recommend it enough.
The best way to learn how to play the guitar
by PTMWPE on 2021/02/16 22:18
As someone who’s been trying to learn the guitar since the 80s and never did well with it, I find Justin guitar app, as well as the online stuff the best lessons I have ever had in the past 30+ years!

Enjoyable learning process, great value programme
by Worzel07 on 2021/02/15 16:08
Really enjoying the learning process with this app which can be used in conjunction with the beginner music theory course on the website (though a little offset, start the theory a few stages in - JustinGuitar wants you playing as much as possible. The theory is just a nice little addition that I feel enriches the experience). I’m coming at this as a very experienced but lapsed of many years Brass player. So I can read music very well and understand many of the general musical concepts. However I have failed on my learning guitar journey a few times over the years. Once a poor teacher, and the others due to frustration at poor self teaching, and bad practice habits. (You’d think i should know better having many years of brass playing under my belt!). This app and Justin’s style of teaching I think work for many levels of experience. It’s engaging and paced well, with a great emphasis on getting your practice approach dialled in from the start. I also bought his two beginner books for some extra songs to practice. Spiral bound are best I think. You don’t need these, they are nice to haves. This time around I feel much more liberated. knowledge and little techniques I was missing are here in this course and my progression is very pleasing and a lot less frustrating. It’s very affordable compared to other programmes, and I also appreciate the ethics of JustinGuitar making the courses free to people who cannot afford it. IMO Musical education should be available to everyone. I benefitted from a free musical education as a child in my school system. Unfortunately many of those programmes have gone today, so philanthropy has become very important. Very pleased with the purchase and feel like this time, I’m going to succeed.
You need to give this one a shot!
by Hallman the Tallman on 2021/02/14 03:41
Great for a true beginner and great for that player who has started and stopped at times in the past. Learning some fundamentals that I know kept me from progressing in the past. I will be signing up for the paid course soon. Not related to the app, I have been watching Justin’s “How to play...” videos for years on YouTube. I may actually be able to play them soon! ;-)

Best guitar learning app by far
by MrThatGuyThere on 2021/02/12 20:06
I started trying to learn the guitar again after decades of it gathering dust in the corner. I am certain that if this app existed in the 90’s my dream of becoming a musician would have come to pass. Not only does the app work, but the lessons are easy to follow and the encouragement and expectations really help on days when you just can’t get it, pushing past the wall and getting it. I do at least a lesson every day and I can already see a vast improvement in my playing. Highly recommended for new guitar players.
Thank you.
by Woof4uga on 2021/02/12 16:00
The older version is better, but either way, Justin is the best instructor.
Outstanding!
by david_kreisberg on 2021/02/11 01:05
I love the steady progression of lessons - each one gradually building on skills. The pacing is quite good, too. My favorite feature is the interactivity build in to practice and monitor skills. This is not just a series of video lessons - although the videos are very high quality. You periodically need to play along with backing tracks, select new songs to learn as you learn additional chords, work on skills such as smoothly changing chords, etc. while keeping track of progress. The interface for playing songs is helpful - showing chords diagrams and lyrics in time with the music. Each song can be played at regular or slower speeds depending on your skill level. I could go on and on about how well-designed this app is. If you are a beginner, like I am, I don’t think you will be disappointed in this app. Highly recommended! His excellent website is well worth checking out, too.

by steelydanfan44 on 2021/02/04 16:51
Long-time noodler on the guitar in my late 50s. Didn’t get serious until I retired about 2 years ago. Spent a lot of time learning things at various internet sites and bought some guitar books but something was missing, and that was structure. Been watching Justin on and off for ten or twelve years and liked his delivery so I decided to give it a go. I’m on stage 4 now and have actually learned quite a bit. But the main thing so far is the structured practice! I have played more chords in the last week than in all my years leading up to this. I do all of the exercises whether I think I know them or not and my playing has improved. I look forward to learning new thins as I progress and getting lots of great practice! I couldn’t be more pleased.
Great reentry into guitar
by groovygrove on 2021/02/03 16:26
I have’t played in years and never had good basic skills (like solid strumming in time open chords). This app excels in that department and I’m having lots of fun strumming along to lots of tunes - which feels like exactly what I need. I watched all the instruction as well even though I knew many of the chords and picked up new ways to improve left hand too.

Great App - Worth the Small Investment
by Jo_Fisch on 2021/01/29 23:57
I took lessons for years back “in the day” and started Justin Guitar about a week ago because I really want to play again. I find this app to be an essential extension of the website because playing along with songs keeps it all fun and tests skill. I honestly never realized my bad habits with hand placement, dead strings and the like before I started with this program. This Justin person is the real deal and an excellent instructor. Use the app, practice, listen to Justin, and you’ll begin to see some great progress.

I’ve downloaded an endless amount of guitar apps for learning and I’ve yet to learn any. I came across Justin’s YouTube channels and started leaning his technique which for me is extremely helpful. When I stumbled upon his app I was super excited! Thank you Justin for teaching me how to play the guitar as I’m a beginner and looking forward to my guitar journey with you!

I’ve been interested in guitar since I was a kid. Finally at the age of 40 I decided to dedicate an hour a day. It’s been a few weeks and I feel like I’m getting the hang of it. I feel like the app is well thought out and starts with foundational practice, slowly progressing. It’s keeping me interested and easy to understand and follow. Highly recommend

by Baseball is Love on 2021/01/28 03:25
I am literally brand new to playing guitar, have short fingers and I love his sensible approach to learning to play. The videos are extremely detailed, which is critical when you can barely hold a guitar correctly, much less play achord.
Great app , stick with it
by Luis Canino on 2021/01/28 01:16
If you actually do the recommended exercises and stick with it, it works. I’ve played guitar on and off for 20years, I’ve learned more in my first week than a lifetime. Put in the effort it’s worth it. Dont forget to utilize the website and keep practice notes.

Best Guitar Learning App I’ve found
by Travelerdowty on 2021/01/24 22:54
It’s really a series of YouTube videos by Justin Sandercoe, who is a world-renowned guitar teacher, plus a bunch of tools and exercises to help you practice. You judge your own progress and move through the videos and exercises accordingly. It takes a bit of discipline, but is so far the most effective teaching app for guitar that I’ve come across.
Total Beginner to Pretty Confident in Months
by Hefectus on 2021/01/21 21:49
I found Justinguitar.com and started taking the beginner lessons there in March of 2020. Great stuff, and I go back to it fairly often, but I was keeping notes on a notepad for progress and decided to take the plunge into the app. I bought an annual pass and got to work. I’m so glad I took that step. The course structure is perfect. The exercises start simple and can be customized as you learn more chords, bringing additional challenges as you get through the material. Video instruction is clear and simple. The songs are a great mix of classic rock, country, pop, and everything in between. There’s a rating system to let you keep track of your progress as you practice over songs. I never thought I’d enjoy playing some of the songs that I found, but it is a joy to be exposed to different types of music and actually play them! I’ve moved on to learning the blues and have picked up Justin’s Blues Licks app to challenge me to learn more sophisticated blues leads. I also have his One-Minute Changes app, which I’ve found invaluable as a perfect chord change tool. In all, this is a fantastic app, and I’m super grateful that Justin and his team put this together. For now, I gotta go... that guitar is beckoning and I must heed it’s call!

Not happy
by josiahpallanes on 2021/01/11 22:03
We bought the lessons for our son last year, and we were not told that the subscription would automatically renewed at the time of purchase. Not were we notified before our bank account got drafted for another yearly subscription. I think if someone really wanted to purchase again, they would do it without help. I don’t know why companies think its okay to take advantage of people just because you already had our account info. I am very good about staying on top of canceling unwanted subscriptions, especially since the pandemic, we cannot afford to be letting any money go unaccounted for. I do not recommend.
Love it
by Mockhamper on 2021/01/11 19:52

by Qlw1994 on 2020/12/26 21:31
I have been on a quest to learn guitar for years now but could never find the resources that were right for me. I’ve only used this app for a week and I’ve already improved a lot. It’s crazy how far knowing just 6 chords will get you and knowing how to properly transition between those chords. If I can get this far just by getting through stages 1 and 2 in the app, there’s no telling where I will be when I successfully complete all of the courses. It’s also fun to use. I practice an hour a day or sometimes even more. If you’re struggling to get past the slow beginner’s stage, I highly suggest using this.
Best beginner guitar app ever!

I’ve used a bunch a of different self study methods over my life. This one works really, really well. If you have the discipline to follow the lessons and practice you will learn to play guitar. The play along mode rally does work. Practice with the backing tracks, slow down if you need to. I paid full price and it is worth way more than a full price video game. I’m grateful I found this program.
Course is working for me.

I was reluctant to believe this app would make a difference when i started. But as i progressed through the course work on the website and began playing more songs, i find this an invaluable tool in my learning! Some of the songs are too easy especially in the beginning but as i progressed i found myself constantly being challenged by things just out of reach if i dug deeper through the song lists. I’d focus on the songs i messed up the worst and after getting through that my skills would be much improved!
Well thought out and structured

I have really been able to enjoy this app. I’ve taken in person lessons and was always frustrated that there was too little time; this app allows me to return again and again until I get something right.I find the lesson organization is great, and Justin’s approach and friendly, encouraging manner are just right for me. I’ll be able to go farther in my guitar playing than I thought possible, for a rookie in his 60s!

Great app, I love all the tools for practicing!

This makes learning to play so much fun!
too many songs unable to play
by AppStoreReviewNickname001 on 2020/12/07 19:11
I've been using the app for several months and am getting to some of the later stages but now a majority of the practice songs say unable to load. Support said it's because of my location (US based) and has to do with their copyright licenses, but geez it's pretty ridiculous. Changing your location (VPN) also does not work as support has suggested. EDIT: There was some weird location setting on my phone that set the location to "en_(null)". I deleted this other iPhone language from the list and it fixed it.
The only app I’ve ever reviewed!!!
by Chey4567 on 2020/12/05 01:52
I absolutely never review apps. However!! This is the only app that I have ever loved with a passion. Justin is an excellent teacher and the app is designed really well for someone who is a complete beginner (like myself) and wants to actually stick with learning the guitar. I’ve tried a few times to teach myself but with little success. Using this app I’m actually seeing improvement in my abilities and I’m having a ton of fun as well. Thank you so much for a wonderful way to learn something new!!
Totally rocks (pun intended)
by Heloryguy on 2020/12/04 02:22
I love this app. It’s like guitar hero, just as fun, only applicable to a life enriching skill. I’m learning my chords very quickly (stage 8) and can’t wait to move onto the next course.
I learned guitar in 3months
by Bobooooo23 on 2020/12/03 20:30
Amazing app, well built. At the core there’s Justin who comes along as genuinely interested in teaching. Then the excercizes. I’ve done them every day, from 10’ to 2h a day, doesn’t matter, but important to stick the routine. Then the songs are easy to follow and play along. Really amazing result, I’m writing this review out of surprise pf what I’ve achieved in just 3 months.. enjoying it !
Simply AMAZING

I didn’t know anything about guitar, scales,or chords I have literally had this app for fifteen minutes.and I’m in love with this app. It’s very helpful.and I would definitely recommend this app to everyone from beginners to professionals. It totally is worth five stars. and I know if you’re looking at these compliments...it may seem like a so so app. and I thought that too...and it totally went above and beyond my expectations. Even though I have only had this app for fifteen minutes.it is part of my school list. Yesterday I was strumming and didn’t know any chords, scales well just about anything you can think of I didn’t know any of that. But now I already know two scales/cords but the tuner doesn’t work on this iPad but I have a older iPad so it will work if you have A more updated version of the iPad/phone but compliments to everyone who helped make this and like I knew nothing about the guitar it was a string instrument I previously have taken violin so I kind of know what it’s like and I’ve heard that violin is the hardest instrument one of them at least.👍🏻😻
Justin Guitar Beginner app review
by Corvus007 on 2020/12/02 23:19
I am a absolute beginner guitarist. I started with the app and it has provided a good routine for learning the basics. I am thoroughly enjoying learning and although it is coming slowly I can see progress and am understanding how you learn if you persevere. Thanks Justin
Small, detailed bites of how to play the guitar. Just what I need!

Easy and helps me progress.
Lots of fun

Justin guitar is fun and it’s great step by step instruction. I’m 58 years old and learning a lot from this. I set aside 1/2 hour a night and am making really good progress using this app. Go for it!
Genuinely useful in helping progress on guitar
by b47a on 2020/07/27 22:50
This just an update. The original review is still below. The app is great. Well worth the money. You can sort by chords but what would be really cool is being able to sort by rhythm pattern . So if I want to focus on 16th note strumming I can quickly pull up a selection of songs where that pattern is used. Might be cool also to add more advanced optional rhythm suggestions to some of the songs though as you progress that tends to come out of you on its own. I had a few other ideas but now I feel like I’m at the record store. Really helps track lessons and progress. Great to play along with and increases difficulty incrementally if you start at the beginning, obviously. The tracks to play along with might seem basic but I gather that’s the point. Working with just a metronome is really hard for me and having something to play along with really helps a great deal in grabbing a feel for the songs and music generally. As I come up with reasonable ideas I will submit them. If your trying to learn guitar then this a great tool to help you on your journey. Worth the money and time I have spent with it. Justin really comes across as someone genuinely interested in teaching and that’s just priceless.
Second to none
by Lflory on 2019/02/06 18:03
Always wanted to play guitar and finally at a place in life where I have the time to dedicate to it and the means to buy the guitar I always wanted growing up, a Gibson Les Paul! After searching through TONS of online videos and apps I downloaded and started using Justin’s app. Although there are many online videos with good teachers breaking things down, Justin takes it so much further. He really makes learning guitar very simple, straight forward, and easy to understand. Then the lesson plans which follow give you the exercises necessary to perfect what you’ve just learned. But the best part is all the songs he pairs with each stage allowing you to use what you’ve just learned and play the songs you love. Due to how well the app is designed, the pace I’ve been able to learn the guitar due to how well Justin teaches, and the catalogue of songs included in the app to play along with, I spend an average of 2-3 hours a day learning, practicing and playing songs. Although there is a lot of good content online, nothing comes close to teaching guitar as well as Justin. Can’t thank him enough. It’s a tremendous feeling to be able to sit down and play songs you love for hours.
This one works!!
by GordonG7N on 2020/07/27 19:21
I’ve tried a number of times to concentrate on guitar skills ... to move from strumming a couple of chords to really playing. In this off and on quest over many many years no method or course has worked for me until Justin’s. For me Justins course is an excellent mix of rigor and fun. Very quick to get me playing simple songs to break the monotony of practicing the basics. But the songs make me aware of the importance of the basics so this circular reinforcement keeps me interested and engaged. It is guiding me with strong foundation building but with plenty of motivational playing to keep me going. Early on finger pain is a problem... a big problem. Justin fully understands and carefully addresses it and adjusts for it in the exercises. I started with the old course on the web but soon switched to the new app. It is extremely well done and seems to me to really skillfully take full advantage of the web’s special potential for learning. This is a very special course and I highly recommend it. It’s been great for me during COVID time ... and beyond!! Great thanks to Justin.
Best learning app ever!
by Ddddddrt on 2020/04/01 02:29
This is without question the Best app for learning Guitar. Justin is an Excellent teacher, very personable and easy to understand. He tells it like it is. It’s going to be difficult, you will get frustrated and it takes time. The biggest thing is Practice. As he says; any of those videos that promise you can play guitar in 10 minutes are nonsense. Hard work and time are what get you there. 50 years ago I started keyboard lessons at 8 years old. I played semi professionally for 10 years starting at age 15. I always wanted to play guitar and with Justinguitar I am. It took me a year to complete the course. I was meticulous and mastered everything before I moved on to the next segment. I’m very pleased with the results and I’m just getting started on my guitar journey. There is so much more ahead. Like Justin always says, hard work and practice is what it takes. I know from experience that’s what’s required. I wish I had done this years ago. I’m extremely pleased with the results. Thank you Justin.
6 months looking for the right solution, this one was finally it for me!
by Scarcraig on 2017/10/10 23:33
I tried lessons at the music store first. My teacher was a washed out old rocker that was just "punching the clock" he was way too disorganized, and he was just a terrible teacher. Next, I tried a more expensive private teacher. He had passion and talent to spare, but he moved way too fast, and again was too unorganized for me. Third, I tried another on-line learning option, it was very expensive, the lessons were just okay, and once more it seemed to move too fast. Finally, my journey came to a successful end with Justin. This app turned out to be the absolute perfect solution for me. It's extremely well thought out and organized, and progresses at the perfect speed. The quality of the instruction in this app is better than what I received paying hundreds of dollars a month to local private teachers. Try this app! A+++ rating all the way, I don't know of a single thing I'd change to improve it!
Making Progress
by SupperConductor on 2020/02/08 00:54
I’ve been trying to learn to play guitar for about 30 years and not really succeeding. I’ve had private lessons and got better here and there. But I never felt like I was making real progress until I started using this app and following the structure provided in the app. There’s a real guitar method here without the usual BORING songs . When you learn the first few chords, the practice songs are quite simple but at least famous pop & rock tunes. After you learn some more chords and strumming patterns, the selection of songs opens up. That’s when I really start to get motivated. I’m practicing at least 60 minutes a day, just because I see improvement daily. I hope Justin releases other apps or offers more content for this one, particularly on theory. Bottom line: if you want to learn to play, this app works, if you practice. They key difference here is you will want to practice.
Excellent but with a couple issues
by nated0gg1 on 2018/11/16 15:40
Overall, the Justin method is a great way to learn guitar and Justin is a gifted teacher. This app really helps get you going on a logical progression for beginners. I have used it for stages 1-5 so far and am very pleased. Playing along with the songs and tracking for your chord change speeds is really great. However, I only gave four stars because there are a few inconsistencies, ie the video on blues shuffle refers to the triplets video that is not on the app (but is on the website) and there is an exercise for ‘old faithful’ but no intro lesson video for it. When I encountered these inconsistencies, I went over to the website and realized I’d been missing a whole lot more content such as the ear training and all the written commentary and practice schedules. Truly, the free website is the best place to drive your progression, not the paid app. What the app provides though, which is totally worth the money, are the songs you can slow down and play along with. So get this app and use it just for those functions!
Fun and friendly fundamentals
by readmeray on 2020/11/26 21:41
The Justin vibe is just good good good for beginning guitar players. It ain’t easy. He encourages us all so well, while also really working hard to find arrangements for pop songs that put them in our reach as beginners. No one does this better imho. That’s Justin—just get on with songs, sneak in fundamentals as they’re needed save foe the super important ones. Then drill them hard. This app is not uberchord-it is not a robot that listens and changes the game to match you. It teaches you how to teach yourself new skills a bit more old school—“here are all the possible chord changes so let’s knock em out and cross them off”. Rather than a robot guiding you it’s your conscience asJustin implores you to count fairly but it’s self assess required only to move on. The songs—the list and variety of simple songs here is incredible. Great backing tracks. Do it! And do the online course!
Thought I was too old to learn
by GermanCoastGuard on 2017/11/09 02:27
Playing the guitar has always been a dream of mine. Long story, goes a little something like this though: grew up busy with other things, work, wife+kids, oops I'm 40. Dagnabbit! Picked up my GSmini a few weeks ago and asked what literature to buy or how to get started. The salesman directed me to towards the internet and I came across Justin Guitar channel that evening. Started with his lessons right away. He is keeping his lessons as they should be (academically speaking), to the point, very relatable, and nothing mixed in with the subject of any particular lesson. He keeps focused on what he's trying to teach you. Makes learning fun, structured and easy (though I'm still just barely above the target 60 chord changes per minute). I enjoy the lessons and the challenges tremendously! I will see this course through until the it's end and will re-post another review.
Beginning at 73
by RRFSOC on 2019/02/14 02:28
I have just begun to use the app. Earlier I had come across some of the beginning lessons. For me the app is easier and more accessible. I recently retired and decided to learn guitar. At 73 I am not as nimble as I used to be but still had the desire to give it a try. I find this application straightforward and easy to use. So far, so good. I practice the exercises every evening and supplement them with other lessons I have come across. I can see the progression tied to the lessons and, of course, don’t know how good I might get. My end in all of this is to be able to play with some proficiency the songs I grew up with. I will give a progress report in several months. At this early stage, I am quite satisfied with my practice sessions and can see the beauty in the way Justin et al have organized and presented the app. Well done!
From beginner to pro in no time
by SpacemanLou on 2020/07/23 11:49
I have been shocked by the progress made with this app after using it for three months. This is without previous experience on the guitar or musical instrument. The lessons are broken down simply for beginners and progressively get harder only when the learner is ready to move on. Don’t let mot mastering a lesson prevent you from moving forward. Moving forward is the only way to unlock new songs. T he variety of songs grows and becomes more complex which means you’ll practice consistently. You can always go back and practice those 60sec chord changes. So far stuck at 40secs on most chords but enjoy learning songs on slow for now with the expectation that speed will come with time. Try it out! Practice on your own time. Simple and easy to learn
Mostly a website aggregator with guitar hero functionality
by IamOTW on 2020/09/10 17:31
This app is mainly an aggregator of the videos on Justin’s website. Yes, it follows a progression like the site, but the site has a lot more content. The big disconnect between the app and the site is around song playing. The app has a play along feature that is reminiscent of guitar hero. If you want to learn how to play the song, you’ll need to go to the website and watch the video. The site lacks the guitar hero type functionality so in this regard, the app and site compliment each other. The app would be much better if it included the song tutorial videos. Other things that the app leaves out: too much to list. Go to Justin’s website to see all that’s missing. Finally, I am annoyed that I can’t switch between my iPhone and iPad and have everything synced. If I do lessons on one device, I have to manually tag them as completed on the other device.
Wonderful
by steelydanfan44 on 2021/02/04 16:51
Long-time noodler on the guitar in my late 50s.
Best virtual beginner system out there
by Littledena75 on 2020/11/28 16:54
Like many folks during this pandemic, I decided to learn to play guitar, so bought my first guitar in August and have worked my way through a few different online beginner systems, with varied success. I’m not sure where, but I came across Justin’s free videos and was immediately impressed. It only took me about a week to decide I was all in: I purchased this app, Justin’s beginner books, and have diligently followed along ever since. I’m now on stage 8, and put all the other Justin songbooks on my Christmas wish list. Needless to say I cancelled all the other learning systems and will stick with Justin from here on out. By far the BEST online system out there. (Btw I am a lefty with a lefty guitar, and have no problem following along, just transpose everything.)
Finally! A real and methodical approach to learning guitar.
by kitcokev on 2020/02/23 17:03
There is a lot of stuff on the net but what I have found with Justin is that he not only knows his way around the six string but has the gift of teaching. Just because a person can play an instrument doesn’t make them a great teacher. With Justin, you have both. Even though I’ve never met him personally, I consider him my personal instructor. The app is great and worth every penny, and with Justin’s commitment to always honing his teaching and playing skills you can count on him to bring new content to this app, develop others for more enhanced learning, and always bring to this world a greater understanding of what it means to be on the journey of musicianship. Thank you Justin, for giving me a path of learning that keeps me excited to learn!
Wonderful resource
by Mr.hernandez sir on 2020/07/30 09:51
Both of my sons learned how to play using Justin’s website. They are now accomplished musicians. During the pandemic I picked up this app for the same reason a prisoner takes up whittling. I had tried Yousician but found it too cluttered. Justin’s lessons are clean, brief and useful. The practice is well laid out. The songs are wonderful. It’s like you all snuck into my house and wrote down my favorite albums. My ONLY problem is counting the chord changes during the drills. I’m computer literate enough to know this can be done by the app. I expect it’ll be introduced on a future update... For now, I just take rough guesses. I want to thank Justin for what he did for my sons. I look forward to the day I can do a “sing song” with them. Peace! ADDENDUM: After using this app daily for more than a month (I’m working slowly on stage 7) I’ve found gaps in the lesson flow that have me repeatedly going to the website. This is frustrating because the website is free and this app is not. I gladly paid the reasonable subscription- if only as gratitude for the resource Justin provided for my sons, and the rest of humanity - but I imagine that would be irritating to someone who isn’t already a fan.
Absolutely the best; it’s all you need!
by texas c-monster on 2019/03/11 20:44
I’m constantly amazed at how much Justin cares about teaching, and his attention to detail, and his genius for constructing a mind-blowingly comprehensive (and never dull) series of courses that walks through from complete beginner to serious advanced. Yes, a lot of teachers out there care, but Justin both cares and is a great teacher. As for comprehensive, he even produces short videos on countless small tangent areas that you’ll suddenly find yourself wanting to know about and then discovering that, yes, Justin has a video on that subject too (seriously, where else will you find a video about using loop pedals in an essential online lesson site?). If it’s guitar, Justin’s probably covered it and done a great job. Then there’s the value factor. You can’t beat it.
Simply the best!
by the old guy ha ha on 2019/04/06 20:29
Awesome I’m an old guy not my first attempt at the guitar but the most serious attempt. Being 60 and some stiff fingers I feel the need to learn to play more than ever before. I run a carpet installation business and primarily install new floors at senior living facilities. The homes have live singers from time to time and it’s all the same music. Frank Sinatra, Tony Bennett, and even Pat Boone and of course the big band sounds from the 30s and 40s. I always joke that when I move in the music will be Clapton, Sabbath, and of course the Stones, and Led Zeppelin. And I want to be able to play along and with Justin’s help I believe this is a real possibility. So with that said Just thank you for giving young and old the opportunity to learn to play in a very easy and smart fashion. Simply the best!
JustinGuitar Takes You to a Higher Level
by Beginning but Happy on 2020/05/05 23:48
Being stuck at home because of the pandemic, I started looking for apps to help me take another stab at learning guitar. It was very confusing and potentially very expensive. Most of the apps made great claims about their teaching abilities but allowed me very little access to their content before hitting me up for money. I’m perfectly willing to pay a fair price to have an expert teach me, but I wasn’t willing to take a leap of faith before I knew if the app worked well for me. This app by contrast, allows you to try a bunch of lessons before making a decision to pay. Justin is a marvelous teacher who is clear and concise and has a great eye for important details. I am learning fast and very much enjoying the journey.
Best I’ve found.
by Jakethah on 2019/01/19 20:54
Justin’s materials are organized in a great way, he’s got the right amount of personality. He gives 100% of the lessons away on his site and just asks for donations. I have a ton of respect for that. The things the app adds on top of that: 1. A tuner I actually like more than the stand alone tuning apps I’ve downloaded (free) 2. The song practice interface that’s the same as four chords, but the songs are organized by what you’ve learned so far. That’s extremely helpful. 3. The chord change practice tool. It’s easy enough to replace with a pen and paper but the app keeps me honest and it’s nice to have the timer and metronome, and fingerings ready there when it’s time to run through them. The app probably has limited mileage, it seems built to be outgrown, I’ve used it about an hour a day for 2 months, I think maybe I have another 2 or 3 months left before I won’t be getting my money’s worth. At that point I’ll probably cancel and switch to donating on the site. Honestly this has been more useful to me than local lessons. Thanks for the hard work on the app guys. And thanks Justin for open sourcing your lessons!
Great way to learn
by Keithbenedict on 2020/10/17 00:30
I am an absolute beginner. At least, I was when I started with this course, but I can now play many songs with ease and continue to progress. The app is organized really well. There are too many songs to count and the app allows you to slow them down to make learning easier. Don’t be afraid to slow a song down. Even the greats do this to learn new material. One thing I don’t like is not having the ability to adjust the volume of the songs. I’m using an Xsonic Xtone and Tonebridge. The problem is, as I adjust the volume of my guitar up, it starts to distort. But I have to increase the volume of the guitar to cut through the instruments in the songs. I’d prefer to lower the volume of the music.
really great app
by tttthhiiiicckkk on 2020/09/25 02:49
I’ve been using this for the past 3/4 months now and I really like it. I’ve come a long way and it’s mostly thanks to this app. my one and only major suggestion - albeit one that is weird - is a request to have vocals for the tunes we play along to. I think it would really enhance the experience of the user and make playing along the songs that much more fun. It will also help us learn the songs faster if we can sing along to them — and what better way to learn the lyrics than hear someone sing it as we play. - Including little icons that tell us which chords make up each song would also be really helpful. That way, we can pick a song that has the chords we want to work on.
Just what I was looking for.
by Frustrated by the bugs on 2019/04/11 03:56
I was looking for a systematic online guitar tutorial that I could do at my own pace, that teaches chords, strum patterns, and picking patterns, plus how to read tabs, how to play songs, and how to play with other musicians. This is it, and you can try it for free. This app gives you opportunities to practice the online lessons, or you could use the premium membership as a stand alone program. The free version includes a series of beginner lessons, guitar tuner, dozens of karaoke style practice songs, and a chord change practice page (how many chord changes can you do in a minute?) Certainly worth downloading, and worth paying for if you're serious. Much less costly than private lessons.
Lessons that are actually worth it!!

Justinguitar is everything it promises to be. I’m an absolute beginner who can’t afford to do lessons right now, so I would have settled for something just alright, but this guy really delivers a full and well organized program FOR FREE. I’m learning so much, at my own pace, and the quick ability to learn songs is awesome!! I’ve been playing for two weeks and am already playing a song I love. (Blondie, The Tide is High.) When I get some money I will be SURE to help pay for what I’ve learned and make sure it stays for free. This is what the internet is all about, and I love justinguitar for contributing this immense and quality service to beginner guitarists everywhere. You rock!!!
Great app. Money well spent

I have been dabbling with the guitar for years now. No lessons either online or personal just what I could pick up on my own. This year decided to pay for one on one lessons and i was also directed to Justin’s website and app. The website and app are an excellent way to practice and learn other aspects of music in between my weekly lessons. The music theory lessons are starting to answer a lot of questions and help my understanding of how music is structured. I’m also learning that the guitar is a very dynamic instrument and I have years of learning ahead of me but I’m confident that with Justin’s website and app and with patience and one on one lessons I’ll get there.
Finally What I Needed
by Chess beats Facebook on 2020/06/09 03:15
I discovered Justin’s lessons from his website months ago and was very drawn to his teaching method. It was a bit difficult for me to organize the lesson materials from the site and so my learning kind of stagnated. Maybe it was serendipity that I discovered the app after I was inspired to pick up my guitar and try again, but now I’m hooked and practice at least 30 minutes a day. You really have no excuses with this beginners course app. All of Justin’s instructional tools are integrated and well planned out. The lesson videos, chord changes/sequences, strumming practices, and song library all come together and push you along in a natural way. YOU WILL GET BETTER WITH THIS APP! YOU JUST NEED TO PUT IN THE TIME! I’m really proud of the progress I’ve made. I can play songs now and I can even play the F chord that I once found so dreadful. At the end of the day, I think this product is good because Justin is a good teacher. No tool can really take the place of a gifted teacher. You’re an inspiration, Justin! Thank you for helping me experience the joy of playing music!
So far so good.
by Bigbl5 on 2017/12/10 18:15
I've used the app for a few days now. I tried Justin's beginners course prior to the app, but struggled with the songs. The app really helps tie the songs into the program and helps ed me learn the strumming, rhythm, and "feel" of the guitar. I'm learning faster with the app than before. I'm giving it 4 stars as I'd like to see the rest of the course added to the app. I'll upgrade this to 5 if they add content. Update 11 months later: The new version is awesome!!! It has the complete beginners course now plus new features. Hands down the best app on the market! May be a little pricey for some, but worth every penny. If you want to learn guitar, then this is the app you need!
Great Source of Learning
by John W. Oliver on 2020/04/07 02:32
I’ve been using this app for a few months now, and it has been a reliable tool. The videos, exercises, and songs, have helped me make advancements in my playing I had not expected when I had picked the guitar back up. The app developers have done a good job with the making sure the app remains reliable. This all being said, the app is not the only part of the journey to be made. Justin’s website contains a lot of supplementary information, including newer lessons on the same subjects. Some would say those lessons makes these obsolete, but it is the exercises this app provides that makes it worth the month spent.

I have tried to play the guitar a couple of times but have never been able to stick with it. Though a DIY type guy, I realize after using Justin Guitar that I just didn’t have enough guidance or short reachable goals in order to hold my interest and keep me encouraged. Still just a beginner, I can go at my own speed and see real results! I’ve never had a lot of hope in my playing the guitar or any musical instrument, for that matter, before now. I can play songs. See real palpable results and continue learning at my pace and the sky is the limit! Justin keeps it both real and fun and I just love that combination. It works for me!
Fun and rewarding

I have been on a quest to learn guitar for years now but could never find the resources that were right for me. I’ve only used this app for a week and I’ve already improved a lot. It’s crazy how far knowing just 6 chords will get you and knowing how to properly transition between those chords. If I can get this far just by getting through stages 1 and 2 in the app, there’s no telling where I will be when I successfully complete all of the courses. It’s also fun to use. I practice an hour a day or sometimes even more. If you’re struggling to get past the slow beginner’s stage, I highly suggest using this.
Amazing Guitar Training

44 year old trying to learn guitar after dreaming about it since I was a kid. Could not afford to do it back then but now I can buy the best equipment available. Problem now was not knowing how to play. Tried some guitar lessons but life is too busy for progressing weekly like required by the live lessons. They are also much more cost. Justin’s videos are amazing and the app is amazing! I have come so much further using the videos and app than I had ever imagined. I didn’t hesitate to pay for the app because I really appreciate all the hard work that went in to making the lessons so easy to follow! Thanks You!!!

Working with this application and support videos for about 4+ months. Owned my old Yamaha for about 40 years but never really had time to work much on lessons. I really appreciate Justin’s teaching style. His advice and sense of humor encourage students to develop skills before moving on. The song variety is set up to support repetitive learning. I wish I had access to this when I was twenty. This is a great way to learn on a persons own schedule. I look forward to working through this and the next course. It’s never to late to try to improve playing. I have enjoyed it immensely.
Amazing resource

Bought a guitar 3 months ago, it was sitting in my living room stating me down for about 1 month before I finally picked it up to try and learn how to play. Tried Yousician first and it had me playing single notes, also seemed very glitchy and not a fun way to learn. Read about Justin Guitar on reddit, so I downloaded it and can play my first song “three little birds” by Bob Marley after 6 weeks. Never actually thought I would be able to learn being a bit older but Justin makes it very easy and actually fun! This is the cheesiest review ever but I’m just excited about finally learning an instrument.
One Week and Progress Already!
by MrBrightside909 on 2020/11/24 05:01
I’m a complete beginner and I’ve been using this app for the past week, and I’m already pretty strong with 3 different chords . I practice ~40 min a day with this app . Justin made an extremely beginner friendly course and the exercises he gives are extremely beneficial to your learning . I’ve loved it so much that I purchased the full beginner lesson. If you’re someone who wants to learn how to play, don’t hesitate giving this a chance. Be patient and you’ll see progress , trust me (my fingers hurt as I’m writing this but it’s all worth it 👌). Thanks Justin for this amazing course !
Outstanding

I know lots of people say “I don’t normally write reviews” well I don’t either. What an outstanding super instructive way to learn guitar. Justin is absolutely a genius when it comes to teaching. Very fluid, and even speaks to the pit falls most will face during the early stages of the guitar. Just began this today and am getting the A and D chords learned. I have always wanted to play guitar because I am a singer, but learning the guitar has always seemed overwhelming, and intimidating. With Justin’s help I now feel that the sky is the limit. I know it’s only day one but such advancements so quickly are already boosting my confidence.
Better than expected

I was reluctant to believe this app would make a difference when i started. But as i progressed through the course work on the website and began playing more songs, i find this an invaluable tool in my learning! Some of the songs are too easy especially in the beginning but as i progressed i found myself constantly being challenged by things just out of reach if i dug deeper through the song lists. I’d focus on the songs i messed up the worst and after getting through that my skills would be much improved!
Awesome app for beginners!

I’m 34 and due to being quarantined because of the coronavirus I decided to pick up a guitar. This is the first time I’ve ever tried to play and after 1 week I’m already putting chords together all thanks to this app. I started on his website and thought I leaned so much from there I might as well pay a few bucks and have access to some easy song lessons. Justin’s app is worth the money for any beginner! It feels like what I think a personal lesson would feel like. Best part about it, you can cancel whenever you feel you don’t need the lessons anymore.
Two weeks in

I haven’t played any music since middle school. I’m now 32 and started playing acoustic guitar 2 weeks ago today. I’m using this app as a guide. I can comfortably strum 60 beats per minute changing from A, D, and E chords. I have just completed the free portion of the lesson which is only level one of nine. I will be purchasing the rest of the app. If you need help learning to play I recommend Justin’s teaching style. You basically learn at your pace as you can repeat lessons as many times as it takes. If this app can teach me to play it will definitely help you.
too many songs unable to play
by AppStoreReviewNickname001 on 2020/12/07 19:11
I've been using the app for several months and am getting to some of the later stages but now a majority of the practice songs say unable to load.

This app is simply outstanding. My guitar was sitting in a corner collecting dust for years, and then I found this app. Now I’m playing every day, I’ve learned how to play songs I love, and I can’t wait to learn more and have suddenly rediscovered a love for music. Justin’s method is extremely accessible and approachable, and makes learning comfortable at whatever level you are, even a rank beginner like me. The additions of advanced chords, and the updates with new songs and lessons make this app and the small subscription fee worth every penny and then some. Can’t recommend it enough.
Excellent app
by cssgregg on 2020/09/30 02:22
I bought the guitar mastery method and it was good but it was hard to understand him. I’ve been bought the guitar zoom program which is excellent and Steve is a great teacher but I have so many lessons I don’t know where to go to get the best progress. The Justin guitar amp is exactly what I was looking for for a beginner program. She basically hold your hand all the way through the modules so you know exactly what the practice when and how long it makes it very easy to follow along. I would highly recommend this to anybody looking for structure in their training.
This app is so. worth. it.
by paperpoppet on 2020/06/23 01:49
I’m so happy I found Justin’s free videos when I first picked up a guitar. They helped me to really grasp the basics and gave me the very motivating satisfaction of being able to play a variety of three chord songs almost instantly. When I was ready to really get serious about my progress with this instrument, I decided to stick with his instruction and try his app. After the free trial I could tell it was well worth the money. The way this app is structured has allowed me to continue progressing at a very satisfactory rate, and is incredibly fun as well. Thank you, Justin!
The BEST beginner guitar app!
by OrangeBeast on 2020/01/04 18:44
As a forty-something year-old just learning to play guitar for the first time In my life, I was overwhelmed with choices when it came to getting started. I’m so thankful I came across JustinGuitar! Justin’s approach to teaching a complete beginner like me was perfect. He starts right off by teaching some basic chords that you can actually use to play songs. Isn’t that the reason you wanted to play guitar in the first place? His lessons consist of what I call “technical skills,” such as chords, drills, exercises, etc. and then applying those skills to playing songs you know and love. Here I am a year later, absolutely in love with playing guitar, and eager to continue learning thanks to the incredible foundation I have built by using the JustinGuitar app. My only regret? I wish I would have started twenty years ago! P.S. His website and other apps are also great tools for building your skills. Be sure to check them out.
Great app!
by Felixisgr8 on 2019/12/12 02:18
I highly recommend this app if you are new to guitar and want to learn. I’ve had so many false starts learning guitar I’ve lost count. I tried this app out and instantly took to it. Justin has a way of teaching, even if by video, that feels personable and patient. The lesson plans are well thought out and paced nicely. The best part of the app is the coded play along system. It made learning timing and strumming feel far more natural. With the “playground” I’ve had access to quite a few songs I enjoy— not just boring ones a book or teacher gave me access to.
Great app
by Multedge on 2020/11/17 16:17
The song app has really kept me coming back to my guitar when so many other things demand my time. The push it gives me to really speed up my chord changes was not possible before I started using the app. I do wish I could use the app on any IOS device under one subscription. I downloaded and subscribed through my iPhone and cannot access my subscription through the iPad app. Not a deal killer but the larger screen of my iPad would be a major plus. Rumor is this is going to be fixed in future app releases.
Very nice app

At 45 years old, I’ve been trying to learn/teach myself guitar for 20+ years off and on. While some of it was the guitar I had initially, more was the lack of someone who could explain some of the things I could not pick out from the various music books I had. I’ve been playing various instruments since I was 5, and took band /organ lessons for 13 years, but guitar was different. Justin finally helped make sense of it all. I am sure there will be things I will struggle with, but so far, things are starting to click that just didn’t when I tried to figure it out on my own. Thanks Justin.
Worth way more than the cost
by Saratogs Slim on 2020/01/23 02:55
Justin’s lessons are phenomenal, and while much of the beginner course content is available for free on the website, it’s really the song library and functionality that make this app so peerless. For beginners able to play chords but unsure how to string them together into recognizable music, the song tool is really suberb—it combines chords, strumming patterns and a running track of the song you can play along with, pause, adjust tempo and more. I’ve learned more songs in three days using the app than in three months on my own.

This app is well worth the money!! Learning guitar is hard especially for people like me who make it even harder that what it needs to be but this app has helped me so much. I’ve learned more in the 3 days that I’ve had the app than the lessons I took years ago. I like that there are many different song choices to play with and there’s video assistance if needed. by Shadess7 on 2021/02/17 23:21
First I hate writing reviews for apps but this app deserves to be rated.

I may actually be able to play them soon! ;-)

Thank you.

Excellent

I’ve downloaded an endless amount of guitar apps for learning and I’ve yet to learn any. I came across Justin’s YouTube channels and started leaning his technique which for me is extremely helpful. When I stumbled upon his app I was super excited! Thank you Justin for teaching me how to play the guitar as I’m a beginner and looking forward to my guitar journey with you!
Very happy so far

I’ve been interested in guitar since I was a kid. Finally at the age of 40 I decided to dedicate an hour a day. It’s been a few weeks and I feel like I’m getting the hang of it. I feel like the app is well thought out and starts with foundational practice, slowly progressing. It’s keeping me interested and easy to understand and follow. Highly recommend
Love the approach
by Baseball is Love on 2021/01/28 03:25
I am literally brand new to playing guitar, have short fingers and I love his sensible approach to learning to play.
Justin beginner guitar app
by frozencacti on 2021/01/27 04:03
Lots of lessons and information with song lists for each step along the way. It would be great if the app could hear the notes I am playing so there is instant feed back about how I’m doing.
Works Great For Baritone Ukulele Too!

This is the best lesson plan I’ve been able to find. Justin explains everything so well, and is very encouraging. The chord change drills and backing tracks are very helpful. I wish I would have found this app a year ago!

I’ll be able to go farther in my guitar playing than I thought possible, for a rookie in his 60s!

too many songs unable to play
by AppStoreReviewNickname001 on 2020/12/07 19:11
I've been using the app for several months and am getting to some of the later stages but now a majority of the practice songs say unable to load.
Totally rocks (pun intended)
by Heloryguy on 2020/12/04 02:22

by Bobooooo23 on 2020/12/03 20:30
Amazing app, well built.

Just my fit!

Justin Guitar beginners course

Working with this application and support videos for about 4+ months. Owned my old Yamaha for about 40 years but never really had time to work much on lessons. I really appreciate Justin’s teaching style. His advice and sense of humor encourage students to develop skills before moving on. The song variety is set up to support repetitive learning. I wish I had access to this when I was twenty. This is a great way to learn on a persons own schedule. I look forward to working through this and the next course. It’s never to late to try to improve playing. I have enjoyed it immensely.

Awesome app for beginners!
by rpm7039 on 2020/04/17 23:13
I’m 34 and due to being quarantined because of the coronavirus I decided to pick up a guitar.

I bought the guitar mastery method and it was good but it was hard to understand him. I’ve been bought the guitar zoom program which is excellent and Steve is a great teacher but I have so many lessons I don’t know where to go to get the best progress. The Justin guitar amp is exactly what I was looking for for a beginner program. She basically hold your hand all the way through the modules so you know exactly what the practice when and how long it makes it very easy to follow along. I would highly recommend this to anybody looking for structure in their training.
This app is so. worth. it.
