Extremely happy of this free app!
Upside down orientation no longer works properly
by perpetually expanding cucumber on 2020/01/09 19:10
When rotating my device (iPhone 7) to point the bottom mic upwards, the app tries to rotate, but seems to do a 360, rather than a 180. Meaning the app rotates all the way around, (effectively not rotating at all) displaying incorrectly when the device is upside down. This issue was not present until the latest update.
Excellent App!

The capabilities of the app are excellent, and customer support is very responsive.
Play & Pause doesn’t seem to work
by Yochiii on 2020/01/05 09:02
I can’t tell what the play or pause does as when I click on either one, the noise measurement continues to respond. Then, sometimes the app would freeze and not record any measurements whether I clicked on play or pause. I also gotten situations were the app is responding to sound and updating the metrics in the stat below but the main display where it displays the instantaneously levels just shows —.
Also not working for me. Very disappointing
by Disappointed #x on 2020/01/01 15:40
I’ve downloaded this app from the the iPhone App Store to use on my iPhone XR. My phone has all recent updates to the OS. It’s at Ver 13.3 However this app is not functioning properly for me. I’ve also tried uninstalling the app and reinstalling it and I’m still having the same problems. Among the problems I’m experiencing are the following: After a fresh install I did get the app’s to begin measuring decibels but nothing below the light gray band ( in the bottom 2/3 rd of the screen) never populated with any readings info whatsoever, not even the other dB measurements and Nor Could I get either of the following functions to work on repeated tries: 1- couldn’t stop/pause the readings. Unless I navigated away from the app all together ? Possibly then 2 - couldn’t save readings. Save icon is dimmed out 2 - can’t re-start it. Tapping the start icon does nothing 3- the count down display just has underscores and a period after the first two underscores. But is otherwise dead 4 - none of the functional buttons on the app are working 5 - only thing I can do is read the instructional screens 6 - the measuring functions of the actual app aren’t working 7 - even when it did initially measure the decibel flucuations (after a fresh install) either the stop or save buttons didn’t work or both. At no time did the bottom 2/3 rd of the screen populate with any data whatsoever. Count me as one of the disappointed users who’s app is absolutely not working for. Very disappointing! Please advise Thanks
Only one complaint
by Fghjkpofdewyinnvfdrui on 2019/12/29 15:16
A great app, simple and understated. Only issue i've had on my iphone 7 is the "Place" and "Notes" fields don't get saved. Without a way to reliably distinguish the recordings this app is all but useless to me.
Android? No jack?
by AveT101 on 2019/12/20 18:27
Great app. What’s not so great is the fact that is is an iOS only, leaving out most people (Android users). The other way this app is missing out is not considering the fact that apple decided to eliminate the audio jack... so no mic can be plugged anymore (most if not all Android phones still have an audio jack input). Missing the boat here guys! Will come back and rate 5 when you come up with the Android version and recommend some recommend some lighting and usb-c and mini mics that will work best when the jack input is not an option. TY
Virus, worm, time bomb, logic bomb???
by musicmkr75 on 2019/11/19 12:47
This doesn’t give me too much faith! NIOSH expressly disclaims any warrant for the NIOSH sound level meter app. The app is provided as is without any express or implied warranty of any kind NIOSH makes no warranties respecting any harm that may be caused by the transmission of computer virus, worm, time bomb, logic bomb or other such computer program.

The best and only good sound meter app
by Indiegrrl2367 on 2019/10/10 04:47
Well made, well designed, free and without ads or other annoying BS. As or more accurate than the inexpensive handheld sound meter I have. The only feature I wish it had was the ability to auto save sessions - I often forget to press the save button and then it’s gone forever! Besides that, great job NIOSH.

Excellent SLM app

Love this app
by Ethan Proulx on 2019/07/14 23:13
I use this app all the time when I go to concerts and I love it. It does exactly what I need it to do. My dad knows a lot about safety in the workplace and other environments so I like to show him how loud it is when I go to certain events. Little Bug: When swiping to delete and not letting go but swiping back as to cancel the action the app crashes. Just a little bug I found!
Didn’t work
by maddoggy88 on 2019/05/19 17:31
I’m not sure why, but on an iPhone SE, it downloaded, but wouldn’t request permission to use the microphone. I went through the settings menus in the iPhone and tried closing everything down, restarting etc., and nothing worked.
Question
by Bad update 12321 on 2019/05/19 00:39
Why is the sound level on my iPad Pro way different from my iPhone 8?
Just what I need, nothing I don’t.
by smileitspaul on 2019/04/24 08:00
The app developers really deserve praise for creating a completely free app that doesn’t blast me with ads, beg me to upgrade, and generally distract me with BS when I try to use it. The interface is clean and easy to navigate. It seems very accurate, especially for what I need which is basically just comparing noise levels relative to one another. It never glitches or quits unexpectedly. I’ll stay loyal to this app, it is exactly what I needed.
Doesn’t Work
by Diray Acosta on 2019/04/21 20:40
I was using it to try out the free version and when I installed it and opened the app for the first time; it showed me readings that were very untrue like 120dB. I know this isn’t right because I was lying in my bed with no electronics on next to me or anything loud at all. I don’t know what the problem is since there’s so many positive comments but it no work :( EDIT: I thought there could be a free version and a paid version but I guess I was wrong. This review is not for a different app by the way, it was just what the app was showing me. But I do not have a professional microphone attached to my iPad so if you want to say it was that I guess it could be 🤔 yet I doubt it. I will change my review to 4 stars because I am only testing this against 3 other decibal meters and not a profesional machine or a sound that is supposed to be at a specific level.

Great for audio Safety, Awareness, and instruction
by Vike99 on 2019/01/18 11:49
Updated comments (Version 1.0.9.11). Took care of the one glitch I noted below, plus greatly expanded their noise info section. This app is now a great learning tool as well. Great app just reached nirvana in my book! Safety is part of my job, but I’m also a father, homeowner, etc. on the job I always carry my phone and have used other noise apps to conduct informal noise surveys to provide on the spot warnings and to plan formal noise surveys. Under most conditions I’ve found my phone does a pretty good job in matching type 2 SLMs. I’ve used several apps but this one beats them all. Not only is it the easiest app I’ve used but it also calculates all the critical parameters automatically. I can easily record and download or email the results. Good to have around the house -do I need to give the kids hearing protection while mowing the lawn? Any kind of power tool? As a sufferer of tinnitus I’m probably more careful of exposing loved ones to noise - this does the trick. I do recommend getting an external mic. In addition to the excellent app, it has pretty good instructional material on noise in n general. Overall very well put together and highly recommended. And it is free! One beef - when I tap the reset button it does not ask if I’m sure like it says in the manual. Too easy to eliminate your recording. NIOSH’s ladder safety app is pretty good as well. Looking forward to their next app!

Works beautifully but sorely lacking iPad optimization. Would also like to see Apple Watch app as well, but mainly iPad native app. Developer yes I know it can be ran on iPad but I want native iPad resolution. Been asking this for a while along with others. I’ll change my rating when we get this. Please consider it!!

Great app. Upon opening it provides instructions on use. It’s fairly simple with only a few options to choose from with no annoying ads of any kind. It was also the only app I’ve used that makes calibrating an add on mic easy and accurate. Great use of tax money.
Great tool but still not available for the iPad

With the 2018 iPad it can do just about anything for inspection reports but the NIOSH sound level meter doesn’t show in the App Store for it.

Very straightforward and easy to use. Would be great if it was also available on the iPads. Please make it available for iPad in the App Store as the app does not show up in the iPad App Store.
The only truly free and most accurate decibel app
by AcousticsProf on 2018/08/16 17:07
No ads, no in-app purchases, no hassle to upgrade every 10 seconds, fully-featured unlike the other top apps that entice you with a single feature but force you buy an upgrade to get the rest of the functionality of the app. Developed for professional users who are serious about acoustics by the top hearing lab in the country, if not the world. I use a Larson-Davis 831 for my daily work and have compared many apps to my SLM and though I was always skeptical about apps, this one is the most accurate out there.

Overload
by Granny to two on 2018/05/19 20:52
Doesn’t do anything, just this “error”. P. S. Nope. I tried re-loading the app. It didn’t request permission to use my microphone. Tried using it, no luck. Went to settings to see if I could connect the microphone manually, but NIOSH SLM isn’t one of the apps that has requested permission to use my microphone. Deleted it again. I use dB Meter Pro - it works, is simple to use and gives similar results to sound level meters I use at work.
It’s more accurate than most apps
by Neilax on 2018/05/18 15:46
It’s more accurate than most apps, but it’s still less accurate than a real decibel meter. It tends to show higher decibel numbers than a real decibel meter would show for a particular noise. For example, it showed 132.6 decibels when I screamed!!! I screamed in front of a RadioShack decibel meter and that only showed 114 decibels.

This app gives lots of data to know if you are damaging your hearing. I had no idea the live music was so loud! I wish I had this app years ago, to prevent my hearing loss and tinnitus. Also, use good hearing protection to prevent permanent damage. The damage cannot be undone!

by Disgruntled albatraoz on 2017/11/18 05:46
I have been using this app for over a year and through several updates. It has always worked well and accurately. It has been a useful tool for monitoring the noise exposure and deciding where and when I need to wear earplugs. The only feature it lacks (in my opinion) is the ability to run as a background process with the phone asleep (similar to the way you can play music), which would allow to have the screen off and use less battery when monitoring for long periods of time. Aside from that personal preference, this app has been reliable and helpful. I would highly recommend it.

by Tx9753 on 2017/04/20 23:54
I have run it several times for an hour or so. It has never quit working, so I am in the very good app category. In case it matters I use a 6s plus, ios 10.3.1, slm version 1.0.3.25, and was using the internal mic during these runs. Noise level was not so high. I will try various external mics and louder conditions, but so far all works.

Excellent, when it works
by RiotSugar on 2017/03/29 05:29
While I appreciate the work that went into making such a precise app, and that it's available for free, the current version is just too buggy. It worked for the first few minutes, but then, apropos of nothing, gave me an 'overload' reading. Didn't tell me what that meant, or how to fix it, but suddenly it wouldn't measure or receive any sound. Closing it didn't change anything. When I deleted and re-installed it, the problem remained. Then it worked for about a minute. Then it gave me the 'overload' reading again. Once this is fixed, I'd love to leave a 5-star review. I was inclined to just send a bug report, but there doesn't seem to be any way to do that in-app, so I'm taking this route. Appreciate the service, but the app in it's present form is broken.

Would also like to see Apple Watch app as well, but mainly iPad native app. Developer yes I know it can be ran on iPad but I want native iPad resolution. Been asking this for a while along with others. I’ll change my rating when we get this. Please consider it!!
Overload
by Granny to two on 2018/05/19 20:52
Doesn’t do anything, just this “error”. P. S.
Great

This is stable and very helpful, associated with the non-profit CDC. Perhaps there are better apps out there, but it gives me everything I need. Way to go!!
Question
by Bad update 12321 on 2019/05/19 00:39
Why is the sound level on my iPad Pro way different from my iPhone 8?
Great app that could be even better with simple tweak
by c_brad_c on 2018/04/26 10:38
Great app but would love to be able save notes on individual saved measurements so I can remember the space and describe the circumstances.

Former safety officer at a university but still maintain safety in my craft woodwork shop. Every so often check decidable and marking on chart in shop.
Only available for phone not tablet
by XCO8 on 2018/09/07 22:32
Very straightforward and easy to use. Would be great if it was also available on the iPads. Please make it available for iPad in the App Store as the app does not show up in the iPad App Store.

I measured my 3 year old great granddaughter’s scream at 117 decibels. (I was informing her that we needed to put away some of her toys.)
Useful!
by Fabricati on 2019/10/05 03:51
Very useful. Does not replace an OSHA meter but it shows where you might want one.
Great tool but still not available for the iPad
by XCO8 on 2018/09/17 15:17
With the 2018 iPad it can do just about anything for inspection reports but the NIOSH sound level meter doesn’t show in the App Store for it.
The only decibel meter app you should use

The only app approved by the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health
Didn’t work
by maddoggy88 on 2019/05/19 17:31
I’m not sure why, but on an iPhone SE, it downloaded, but wouldn’t request permission to use the microphone. I went through the settings menus in the iPhone and tried closing everything down, restarting etc., and nothing worked.
Excellent App!

The capabilities of the app are excellent, and customer support is very responsive.

I just downloaded the app, it worked. I closed and reopened the app, now it is Not picking up sound. I’m trying to find a user guide, but to no avail.

Best iPhone sound level meter ever!!
by JohnAppleseed_D on 2017/03/02 19:34
I don't know why so few people know about this app but it's literally the most accurate and user friendly sound level meter in App Store😶. Use this to keep my speakers at a safe sound level.

Not working
Incredibly valuable tool
by chuckmyers on 2017/02/24 14:29
This Acoustical Engineer found the NIOSH SLM to be easy to use, very accurate, and powerful as a learning tool. Every feature you'd need to run a noise survey is available in this app. Bravo!
Flawless App

There isn't a more accurate sound level meter available.
Thanks NIOSH!
by brandonransom on 2017/01/20 04:14
I work under, in and around helicopters and airplanes. This will help me keep an eye on my actual sound exposure. Better than carrying a dosimeter everywhere!
need more info
by tikkamasala on 2017/01/25 16:46
when initially installed, only the instantaneous dBA level is measured. I'd like to see Total Run Time, and Max. level, at the very least. Where do I go to find out how to activate them?
