b-hyve
Description
The b·hyve smart sprinkler timer app allows you to control or monitor your sprinklers from anywhere in the world with the convenience of your smart device. Smart Watering Knowing how long and how often to water your plants can be challenging. When set to smart watering mode, b·hyve takes the guesswork out of watering and utilizes Mother Nature, along with some really great technology, to determine the watering schedule for your yard. When set and left in smart watering mode, b·hyve can save users as much as 50% more water over a traditional controller. Weather When set in smart mode, b·hyve uses local weather data to determine how much water is evaporated and transpired through your plants each day to know when it needs to water. It also accounts for any rainfall that is in the forecast, shuts off the system for rain, then looks back to see how much actually fell. That’s smart! But all yards are not the same. b·hyve also takes into account things like soil type, plant type, sun/shade and slope to determine a watering schedule that takes the water to the roots and helps avoid runoff. WeatherSense If you want to be the one in control of the schedule, that’s okay too. With b·hyve you can set custom programs to water how you want while still taking advantage of the local weather data to override watering in case of a weather event. This will shut off your system during the rain and resume your program when the rain has passed. That’s smart! Integrated Irrigation Audit Tool The b·hyve app also integrates the award-winning irrigation audit tool right to your smart device. By performing a catch cup test on your sprinkler system, you will know exactly how much water is being applied rather than relying on estimated sprinkler head water use that other timers/apps use, which can be off by as much as 50%, saving you more water and money. This is the app for the best-selling, WaterSense and SWAT certified orbit b-hyve Smart Wifi Sprinkler Timer. This is also the companion app for homeowners with the Hydro-Rain b·hyve pro Wifi Controller. Please let us know if you have questions or problems. ALEXA – Works with Alexa. Terrible all around
by NCdude69 on 2019/05/20 15:14
Poor instructions. Poor help as well. Valve will not turn on water and help screen is useless. Update failed twice on firmware after 5 minutes each time. Save your money.

Wish the app would be a little more user friendly not everyone who buys this is a sprinkler expert. The setup is a pain but love it after it’s all said and done.

I’m not a person that wants to have my whole house controlled by my cell phone. But this app and device allows you to test sprinklers from your phone right at the hole you’ve dug to find the damage. Its simple to program and to use. Even for those that don’t totally embrace technology like me ! I’ve been very happy with this product and it’s made my life easier and saved money already for me with a 24 hour rain delay. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

Pretty easy set up.
by blk182atn7 on 2019/05/19 03:47
This was a simple app to set up and connected right away to my b-Hyve. The walk through was very quick and testing zones what super cool. One issue is the app overlaps info on the top left and right on the phone which is a little annoying.
Love it

Not impressed
by Joe T 49 on 2019/05/19 02:42
I have only used the app for a couple hours but I am not new to Bluetooth or WiFi. Difficulty pairing, not intuitive zone editing, zone testing works, got message Re manual watering which I did not request. All in all, either the app needs work or I need training. Have not yet tried to set up schedules.
When it works it’s awesome... when it works.
by KatArtTeacher on 2019/05/19 02:36
I just changed the batteries in my device and it is connected to my phone, but won’t do anything. I tried to start a manual water but it tells me that the process is taking too long. It’s a pity because I used to love this thing.

This app is very clear on what to do an easy to figure out. It walks you through the whole setup so you don’t miss anything and explains everything really well. Works great for us so far!
Good app. Easy to set up and operate.

Very good app. It walks you through the process and makes it pretty easy to use.
Works surprisingly well
by Gh3rm4nn on 2019/05/19 00:06
No problem connecting to WiFi. Only negative is how difficult it is to remove transformer cover to connect direct to AC. Removing the transformer cover took more time than the full installation (mounting to outside wall, connecting all wires, testing stations). App works well and notifications are nice. Have had no issues with disconnects or app issues.

Fantastic!!
It’s OK
by A-nong on 2019/05/18 22:23
It’s more difficult than it should be to adjust. The Smart Watering setting seems to not be watering enough and when I try to extend the watering time, but it won’t save. If I use Manual mode it won’t activate the rain delay - at least it doesn’t appear to. I can figure most everything out but I guess this system isn’t Idiot Proof enough for me.

Not So Smart Timer
by RomanRambonator on 2019/05/18 20:55
There is nothing smart about “Smart Watering” feature. When I turn it on, it doubles the schedule for each day, which actually wastes twice as much water. Then when I try to turn it off, it doesn’t remove the double water schedule unless I close the app and re-open it. Kind of frustrating, but at least It allows you to set your own customized schedule instead, and it will still automatically put a rain delay. App is a Good idea but needs some tweaking on the developers’ part.
No problems!
by Eand432xray on 2019/05/18 20:34
I had only one irrigation area to set up. And, it only took me 20 minutes from opening the box to the time where I was turning the irrigation system on. Piece of cake!

I’ve been using the b-hyve and app for a couple years and love the convenience, ease of use and functionality. One thing I have never found is a way to manually run all zones with a single menu. Would be handy for those really hot days when you want to get a little more moisture. Nevertheless, well done app.

My brother told me about this b•hyve Timer and how it makes his life easier. Sounded fantastic! I was interested. He came by and installed mine for me and now my life is easier too. Now with the Smart setting I can know that it is water wise and will properly water the different zones according to the needs of the plants, lawn, sun exposure, soil etc. With the app I can monitor the system from anywhere. The best Timer and application!!!
Rain delay
by Sprinkler System Expert on 2019/05/18 14:03

by Rarebear33 on 2019/05/18 02:43
This timer is great! Being able to control my sprinklers wherever I’m at is so convenient. This saves a lot of footwork when checking and servicing the sprinklers. And the Smart Scheduling is very cool the way it checks the weather reports for the area. Then schedules the time accordingly! It even wants to know what type of soil and type of plants or grass. After I installed it and switched it to Smart Schedule, it put the system in wind delay. Amazing!

All the functions you would expect are there. The zone, and schedule interface is easy to use. The app and b-hyve box work great together. Two things that stand out are: 1) the ability to test sprinklers from your phone without walking back and forth to a box and 2) the auto rain delay...rain started and I opened the app to see the rain options but it already indicated it was in an 18-hour rain delay. :) nice.

by koa1aboi on 2019/05/15 06:09
I like the functionality of the system. It works. But everything about the interface is so dated. You’re way behind Rachio and other smart devices in this regard. Even the icon looks tacky. Invest on app designers to keep up with the times.

I have now, per your instructions, reloaded the app. Because, I had clicked on rain delay for 48 hours; however, the sprinklers turned on anyway this am. The reason for the rain delay was to save water. May 14 - ditto to the above. For some reason it sometimes doesn’t recognize delay.

What you might expect from a sprinkler company
by MacAdam9901 on 2019/05/14 06:15
This app (or the backend server application) seem very buggy. I seemed to have gotten my config in a state where the app indicates Smart Watering is OFF (which, by the way is not obvious to do… As it is hidden in the Settings>Devices screen) but I cannot enable ABC programs to run because it still thinks Smart Watering is enabled. When I toggle on, they automatically toggle off after ~3s. Checked the Orbit user forums and see that there are dozens of other people who have similar experience, and tech-support claims they have to manually flush out corrupt configurations. It’s very unfortunate to see that these reports date back over a year and have still not been fixed.

Programing timer on smart phone
by Opa 17 on 2019/05/14 01:19
It has been difficult for an “old guy”, admitting I’m a novice in programming apps, to get it to function as I’m sure it is designed to. This probably sounds counter intuitive, but it would be easier - for me at least, if there were more detailed written instructions available.
Decent when it is not having connection issues
by Wimtar on 2018/07/20 17:00
This is an app that controls real physical utilities - so it is pretty important that it turns on and off when you need it to. If I run a test on one of my sprinkler zones it may run correctly for the first test but all tests after that for several hours sometimes are not registered and get put in some sort of back order. The only error I am given is that there is a server connection error. I know it is not my local Internet or wireless. I reset the server connection through the app which sometimes appears to update the last server connection timestamp and sometimes it does not. Regardless, it does not seem to fix the problem. Several hours later I will get a notification on my phone saying that it has completed a watering program. This has me worried that some of the nicer dynamic watering/smart watering features will not always work if it doesn’t have a good server connection. And possibly as a worst-case scenario – maybe it won’t be able to turn off a watering… I have developed a mobile app myself and did the dev ops work. My guess is that they need to get this on AWS and have much better server uptime and clean up the codebase. Of course, I could be wrong, but my app frequently had similar issues about reaching the main server when we had backend problems. It’s unfortunate that we need to communicate with the back and in order to run a local test. Please fix!
Reliable but Arcane
by Spambush on 2018/07/18 12:42
Everything works connection-wise but there seems to be no way to simply run a programmed watering cycle by itself. When selecting a program you can either edit it or replace it. How about just running it? Adding a “Run Now” button would be great. To just get it to run a watering cycle manually you have to go into the remote, set each zone and time, and then run it. Every time! Also, it is very easy to not have an edit to a program save. This happens when you fail to hit save the requisite number of times. Say you wish to change a start time: you click the time field, change it, hit save in that field; done, right? No. You have to hit save in the upper right of the screen too or your edit doesn’t actually save. Lastly, the automatic “rain delay” can kick in on you when there has been zero rain. The reason is wind. It looks at the wind and will set a rain delay in high winds. The problem is that it doesn’t say wind. So you can run the app and see rain delay while your plants are turning brown. These are some things that could use some work. Otherwise, the app and the B-Hyve controller are still light years ahead of having to run out to the garage!
Water water everywhere!
by MitchKlein on 2018/07/19 17:47
It’s been about a year now since we installed our b-hyve water timer. It sure does beat having to be at the box to change programs, test drip lines and heads, and just keep up with the changing weather here in Phoenix, AZ. BUT, the interface is a bit awkward, and it’s more difficult to use than it should be. Too many screens, and too few bells and whistles. So, even though I can be in East Kishnev when I want to turn a zone on or off, make changes to the programs for each zone, or just turn it all off because a storm just soaked the whole state. I’d like to see drip heads that have an individual soil monitor, so that each drip head could be individually programmed. The one that’s under the shade tree should be turned on, say, half the times that the full sun bushes are watered. Or, the newly planted small flowers or bushes should be watered twice as often but only half as long as the established plants are. Or, bush A gets four times as much rain water as bush B. Program for that!! Anyway, I can’t really complain too much, because my city rebated the full price of my b-hyve when I submitted my receipt and paperwork. Free for nothing! What a deal.
Better than my Rachio
by ArmandWelsh on 2018/10/29 15:51
I have a Rachio from my backyard and I installed this one for my front yard. The b-hyve is less than half the price has more fine-grained control over the watering once it’s tuned up it’s more effective than the Rachio and it’s every bit as good from the Software side. About six months after upgrading to this unit Iro updated the Rachio software to make it more like this one. With the latest updates on the version to Rachio controller I still have better calibration option in this system. Setting up the Wi-Fi is a little hokey considering there is no way to discern between the 2.4 GHz band and the 5 GHz band on a dual band Wi-Fi network. I did notice that every time you scan the come back in the same order, so I picked one and intermittent connectivity issues reset the Wi-Fi , Take the other Wi-Fi bad, and everything has been flawless sense. I highly recommend this family of smart irrigation controllers to anyone looking. With their low price, they come in well under almost all smart irrigation controller rebate program limits.

I installed two Orbit 3 valve manifolds together and wired it to the 6 zone WiFi sprinkler timer. It was a very simple process! However, the double union to connect the two manifolds had to be special ordered since my local Home Depot did not have it in-store. Orbit’s customer service rep was very personable and able to locate the exact parts with serial numbers that I needed for my DIY custom irrigation system. I’ve never done anything like this and was very hesitant. I’ve been running the system for 6 weeks now and absolutely love it! I’ll never have to spend hours watering my 12 fruit trees and vegetable garden again. I also bought the adapter fittings for drip irrigation. Orbit’s design is simple, effective, and less expensive than Rain Bird’s. The only complaint I have so far is that it took a few tries to connect the WiFi. Also, for some unknown reason it did not water a scheduled session, but the following week it did. The upside is that the system keeps a watering history so that you can manually set it to run using your smartphone.
Orbit b-hyve 12 zone wifi smart timer
by lawn bob on 2018/07/16 15:23
Works as promised. Setup was super easy. I read older app reviews and viewed You Tube videos and found all of the complaints have now been corrected. It now shows more information about past watering confirmations and when it is going to water next. Hard-wired rain sensor works well. I have one zone on “smart watering” to try it out. So far so good. It now has the EPA “water sense” rating so I will be getting a rebate from the water company. I picked Orbit over the others primarily because it can run three different ways. It can be programed manually at the unit itself then run on auto; programed manually with a smart phone; or set on smart watering after entering some info about the zones. It can be connected to with Wifi AND by Bluetooth. Testing is is very easy and simple because I don’t have to run back and forth to start the timer. I replaced a basic digital Toro (15 years old) and I hope this one lasts as long.
A lot to like
by Sprkygrg on 2018/07/20 13:40
I have found this app to be very easy to use and unlike some, it seems to weather the storms of iOS updates. I like being able to update it or suspend while I’m out of town. I also like being able to test a zone to adjust head patterns after a repair. Saves walking back and forth like I used to do. One feature I would like to see would be the ability to trigger a program one time. On my old timer it was called “semi-automatic”. For example, if I want to run program A one time now I have to set the start time a minute or two from current time, then remember to change the start time back later. A run once now function seems fairly simple to implement. One other detail is that there are two save buttons active when you are changing a program but only one of them actually saves your changes. You have to back out of changes in the right order. Only show the save that is the next step. This is a very reliable app and I use it almost weekly.
App has bugs
by ryan hennessey on 2018/08/22 13:44
This app as several bugs that don’t allow me to adjust down the runtime. It’s also duplicating run times running each zone for 50 minutes two times in a row. This timer makes my system run 2 times as much as it was and my grass was perfectly green. I bought this system to save money and water and it’s doing the opposite. It will be going back if tech support won’t can’t help. Update: I have since returned the system to the store. I was not able to reduce the watering in a zone to anything less than two 10 minutes sessions equaling 20 min total when I only wanted it to run for 12 minutes total. I tried all the suggestions tech support offered including going in and changing the estimated run time down to my desired 12 minutes. The run time would not go less than 20 minutes cresting over watering. I even had tech support tell me to turn off the smart watering and that they don’t recommend using it. I have updated my review to a 1 Star. It has been returned and I am now using the rainbird system. Too many flaws.
So convenient and intuitive
by Pbro123 on 2019/01/29 04:58
This app is awesome. Its super intuitive and easy to make program adjustments or water ad hoc when needed. Especially when I reseed bare spots in my lawn. To grow new grass seed you obviously need to consistently keep the soil a bit moist for 10-14 days. That was impossible for me before with work and limited programs on any timer, which I didn’t want to change for just 10 days. Now I can turn on a single station for 30 seconds or so throughout the day when at work so the new grass grows in flawlessly. Also the automatic rain delay saves me stress. I used to wake up at 5am to the sound of my sprinklers that I forgot to turn off during rainy days and would sprint out to my detached garage to turn it off before judging neighbors noticed. Then I would forget to turn my program back on and grass would die... Now the app alerts me when it is delaying watering because of rain and also excessive wind.
Best Summer lawn in years!
by Jmaunster on 2018/07/31 01:10
I’ve had the B-hyve 12 Station controller for the past two years using it in Smart mode. Last year was pretty good with a few challenges during the heat of the season and also with weather misses based on my location verses where the actual weather feed was located. This season with some nice improvements on the app, I can now locate and add my nearest and best weather feed location and I now have the ability to adjust Smart watering by increasing or decreasing the duration % for each station. I have also adjusted the interval on a few stations as well. This new feature is just what the doctor ordered to enable me to adjust Smart watering to fit my landscape needs! Home run for B-hyve for sure! Well done! Oh, and did I mention how nice it is to use in the manual mode to check and clean my heads throughout the season. This feature alone makes it worth the purchase! Highly recommend this irrigation controller!
Great App With Some Annoying Flaws
by K-RayDunn on 2018/07/28 11:16
All around this is a great app. I love the ability to test a zone while I’m in the yard working without having to run to the timer and start a valve and then run back and see if it’s working. That feature alone is golden! Some annoyances are the fact the current weather is never accurate. Even though I have it set to a local weather station it pulls weather presumably from another region or another planet. This makes its ability to adjust to the weather useless. (I’ve worked with technical support but still the feature is not working.) Another annoyance is the inability to pause a currently running program. For example, the front yard is watering and I want to pause the program so my wife can get to her car without getting wet. I can only stop the program and wait for it to come around in cycle again. Not great during these really hot spells. Fix these annoyances, Orbit and you’ll definitely have a 5-star app!
Glad to have it. Needs improvement.
by silyman1 on 2018/07/19 11:58
These folks say their system will work with HomeKit eventually. That’s why I got it. The app is fairly clunky though. I’m a smart home junky, and I can’t figure out most of it. We can only control each hose unit individually, but there’s still a section for zones inside each unit. They can’t be labeled anything but zone 1, from what I’ve been able to surmise. I have had to reconnect the units to the WiFi controller once or twice, and the system just stops notifying me about watering when it’s offline. No outrage notification. App should listen and tell me “b-hyve has not heard from your devices in a while. You may need to reset your connection”. I’d love to be able to add multiple units into the same zone map. Don’t know why it’s even there if I can’t. Maybe I’m missing something? We humbly wait for the email saying the system now works with HomeKit. :-) fairly pricy but not as pricy as the $100 ones from Eve I think it was. Eve likely doesn’t have the gps weather smart watering either.
Smart phone app & Alexa Skill Could Use Some Tweaking
by Computermaverick777 on 2019/05/11 18:59
Orbit b-hyve smart phone app works well however there are some improvements I would like to suggest that would help in the ease of operation or make it a little more intuitive. There does not appear to be an obvious “Manual” mode button for turning on a zone for say 5 minutes or so. The only way I have found is to go into “Test” mode or select the zone then set the timer. The app install and setup went very easily. After install I haven’t found how to get the app back into setup or get the controller to go into paring mode or continue with setup in Alexa. The Alexa skill downloaded, installed and connected to the Orbit controller and functions but I haven’t been able to “discover” the Orbit device via the Alexa Show or smart phone app and place it in a group. Thus it cannot be seen by the user in the Alexa Show or Alexa smart phone app. I have not had this issue with the 20 or so assorted other devices I control with Alexa. A different name for the Orbit controller or the ability to change the name in the Alexa skill would make it more intuitive to use rather than having to say b-hyve in the command how about just using “Orbit” or “Sprinkler” in the command: “Alexa turn on sprinkler zone one for 5 minutes” - “Alexa turn on Orbit zone one for five minutes” Hopefully some improvements will be made or I can figure out how to better connect to the Alexa Show.
B-hyve has its quirks
by harri192 on 2019/03/09 01:16
The b-hyve app and sprinkler timer combo are okay. They get the job done but they certainly have their quirks. I’m a professional rocket scientist - literally, and honestly the first few times I tried connecting the device to my WiFi it was a real bear and I wrestled with it for a while and had to change my routers SSID name just to get it to work. Within the software a few poor choices in my opinion. For instance choosing mL (ie a volumetric unit) to do the sprinkler calibrations is difficult since most folks are instead concerned with how many inches of water (linear measurement) are being put down. Additionally their definitions for things like soil type and amount of sun are unclear nor do they give a good explanation of how the sprinkler times are being calculated. Finally, I found my personal water bill sky rocketed after telling it to try and put down an inch of water per week although the systems marketing strategy is that it’s supposed to be more economical; In my experience this clearly was not the case.
Extremely straightforward setup.
by Zupplemental on 2019/04/21 19:31
I have tons of smart appliances and apparatuses in my homes and properties. B-Hyve is by far one of the most straightforward to set up that I’ve ever experienced. The removal of the old analog timer and replacing with Orbit b-hyve timer, and getting it connected to my WiFi, took about five minutes per timer. Also Each b-Hyve timer is a fraction of the price of some competing “dumb” timers. My dad and I were able to share our water timers with this app so we can each control devices, on different properties, if the need were ever to arise. The sharing of devices between Orbit accounts is straight forward yet at the same time secure. Remote controlling of theses devices just works. The granular option to configure your sprinklers to soil, water, slope, temperature environment, etc is very useful for a nerd. Yet there is a straightforward option for a person who wants an easy set up. Only thing that I’m not sure can be done is see a global calendar view of all timers and their various future watering dates in one calendar view versus having to switch back-and-forth between timers. Huge fan of this product. I wonder if there is an Orbit water-main ball valve that this could be configured with? Have some of your savvy engineers making a water leak detection system. I think that would be awesome.
Good start but needs to be finished
by brtunes on 2018/08/01 01:20
There are several things that are “coming” but as it stands now it seems to be a project that is half finished. It doesn’t stay connected even with a WiFi booster. Other devices in the garage stay connected but I have to reconnect everyday. I never have time to reconnect so it stays off-line all the time. The weather app needs much improvement. I live in Texas and it always says we are in a rain delay when we are in the middle of a drought. We haven’t had measurable rain in about 5 weeks and it is in rain delay about 3 or 4 days a week. ?? It has many options for different programs which is great. I wish the pictures in the instruction book actually showed my particular device because this is confusing. I can’t tell if I’m doing things wrong or if they just do not work like it says in the booklet. When everything that is “coming” gets done and they can figure out how to make it stay connected it will be great.
What a life(lawn) saver!
by Sigmalass on 2018/08/07 01:41
We have rental properties 3 hrs away. I decided with our new project to try out your Orbit wifi sprinkler control. I am over the moon, thrilled with this timer and app. We had hydroseed sprayed for the lawn 2 weeks ago. I love that i don’t have to worry about the seed drying out. The app shows me the watering history, so i am able monitor everything from the convenience of my home. And im not having to call the renters to make sure everything is in working order, or drive 3 hrs to check it myself. The rainy season has not hit in our area, so I haven’t had a rain delay. We have had alot of wind, so i have experienced the wind delay numerous times. With the new seed i have overridden that feature a few times, which was very easy to do from the convenience of my phone. 😉 I plan to put one of these at each of our properties. Well done!
Fantastic app
by DavQ22 on 2018/08/11 12:51
Thank you for ridding me of the need to tinker with old school hardware dials and confusing programs. I gave up trying to set custom schedules on them. This app is intuitive, with several scheduling options and adhoc starts. My wife just asked me to water the lawn, and I didn’t have to step away from my fantasy football research to climb over lawn mowers and snowblowers to reach the control panel. Just pick up the phone click start in the b-hyve app and I’m back to deciding which Running Back to keep. The ultimate old dude laziness enabler. Only critique I have is tying the schedule to local weather forecast is hit or miss. Great idea but sometimes it’s missed thinking rain is coming when it’s not. This led to dry lawns for the first few weeks. I switched to standard scheduling and has been flawless since. Great app. I show and recommend to everyone.
Water genius
by tzimmermn on 2019/04/27 21:05
I love the app! So simple to set up and water. I love the test feature so I can see what is watering and how well the heads are watering without having to walk back and forth to turn the sprinkler on and off. Very intuitive to operate with app. Although it has 3 programs, it does have multiple start times available within each program that can be set. Attention programmers!!!! One feature I would like to see is a manual override or initiation. I find that sometimes I am working in the yard and need to turn off or interrupt the normal system operation. When finished, I normally turn system back on, but the system will not run until the next scheduled time. It would be nice to have the ability to start a manual run of the watering cycle that got missed or interrupted. I love this system!
FINALLY! AN APP THAT SAVES ME TIME! AND TRAINED MY NEIGHBORS DOG!
by IndexGod on 2018/09/22 16:37
I love my b-Hyve sprinkler timer! Finally something that really works and save a ton of time (and money, using the smart watering feature). I live in the desert and every drop really does count. I use mine with Alexa and never have to open the timer or even go near it. I had a dog that would visit my yard and do his business, now in conjunction with IFTTT, Alexa, and Arlo Wireless cameras, I set up a skill that when Arlo detected motion in his favorite part of the lawn IFTTT would tell Arlo to run a program to sprinkle that section for 1 minute and sound the Arlo alarm that sat in the window near the lawn. I would activate this skill at night when his owner would let him out to wonder the neighborhood. It didn’t take long for the dog to get the idea that he was not welcome in my yard. The owner probably wondered why “Butch” often returned home soaking wet.
Great app when the bugs are figured out
by Csampsonite on 2018/07/10 20:01
I rated the app 2 stars for the following reasons. Orbit has come up with a great app and hardware but since I started to use the app 1.5 yrs ago, I’ve had bugs and problems that the developers haven’t figured out or are slow to fix. Examples: weather bug- the weather temp won’t display if you don’t enter a correct address even though the zip is accurate. I fixed this by removing my physical address and only listing a city, ST and zip. Smart watering- the algorithm is sometimes off or weird. When smart watering is running, the home screen displays a full time is reached but doesn’t display real-time. Screenshots show I can pause a program but that’s not true. It would be great if the dev team would allow you to resume a program if you pause it. Once the team figures out the app and makes these improvements and fixes, the app will be solid. In order to stay ahead of market share, they need to come out with water measurement hardware to help with conservation.
Not all settings work, apps convenience is an inconvenience
by varonloco on 2018/07/24 12:12
The app is just ok. The design workflow is muddled. One setting that doesn't work is the Interval setting. I set it at every two days. On the day it's supposed to turn on it automatically skips 2 days ahead without watering. On the day following (the day it's not supposed to water) I get a notification that it has watered at that time, which it doesn't. The only way I can get an every two day setting is by picking the actual days, which works, but I have to reset it every week on the turn which makes the whole system less convenient. I had the older non-WIFI Orbit timer that would do the two interval watering without an issue. So I went from a timer with a cumbersome manual control but consistent watering that works to a phone controled timer that makes me spend more time in the app or gives me setting that don't work with missed waterings. I'm even afraid to use the Smart Watering now, my yard will be toast if it doesn't work.
Initially impressed, but...
by CarpeDiem601 on 2018/05/07 06:15
It was a bit difficult to pair my device with my account but I got through it after a couple resets and re-try’s. Initially I was very impressed after setting up the smart watering details. It worked for a couple weeks and properly followed the weather and skipped rain days. This is when things fell apart. I renamed one of my zones from “Shade” to “Citrus (old shade)” and using parenthesis broke the app. Devs need to fix that right away - rookie coding oversight! I manually watered the citrus trees with a hose after fertilizing so I went into the app and changed the soil moisture to 100% and after a few minutes it goes down to like 5%. It never remembers my entry so I don’t know what to do. Overall the program has a ton of potential and works great when it works but it just seems the devs are a bit junior and there are an insane amount of bugs. I’m in software development so I know good software when I see it and this ain’t it!
Leaves something to be desired
by Next version on 2018/07/27 23:39
It is not intuitive. The type of soils that are available not what I have. Increasing the running time with the smart mode only adds more applications. This is aggravating because I want my front yard completely watered before I leave for work. Mid summer it can’t keep up with the Utah heat. Now I am changing it off of Smart Watering because the lawn is so bad. During the spring and fall when there’s more possible interruptions from rain I’ll change back to Smart Watering. I found it difficult to pair after the first initial try. Out of six units that I have installed I still have one that has not paired properly... it happens the be the last one I installed for a 80 year young widower. I promised her it would be ok. And I have been fighting with it for a month. I will return that unit this week. I love it for testing/cleaning heads. I turned the neighbors on when I drove by them out in the yard. Also great for when the dog comes over to do its business. When I’m out of town it’s reassuring to actually know that the yard got watered with the history tracking ability. My son called me from out of stated to have me check and see if he was drowning his newly laid sod. So other than a real time water video it’s trying to do the job and some different soil functions it’s not too bad.
Nice features but room for improvement
by figgertoes on 2018/09/06 23:02
I love controlling my sprinkler from my devices! Happy to leave behind the days of going out in a rainstorm to turn off my sprinklers from outside controller. Setup was harder than it should have been. App designers assume you think like they do & instructions are sketchy. I am no stranger to setting up programs on controller but this was a boggle. Long wait for phone help, but staff very helpful & got me going. I didn’t know there were Alexa controlled timers. Wish mine were, but not deal breaker. Some commands could be too complicated, but I would like to command “turn drips off”. Accessing the ‘run manually’ command is tricky & I cannot remember the steps to get there. I learned to partially cheat by running each zone in test mode. I would put ‘run manually’ on the screen where you edit each program. It is deeply buried with no clear roadmap. Weather here is unpredictable so I am not using the smart watering feature. We get no rain when in ‘severe storm warning’ & gullywashers not in forecast at all & huge differences can exist among neighborhoods. Don’t know if smart watering would work here. I was getting a massage nearby when a huge unpredicted storm came up while my system was running. So I grabbed phone & quickly stopped the sprinkler. Nice!
Good Job!
by MozartNot on 2018/09/13 23:31
I don’t usually write reviews unless I’m really disappointed, but I have to give the programmers credit for this device - it actually feels like they use it themselves (Imagine that!) There are little surprises in the software - and all are good at this point. Today, for example, I just noticed that there is SOME indication of the weather on each day when you look at the historical record of your watering AND that it doesn’t record what your system was set for but what actually happened. (It noticed that I interrupted a watering cycle a few months ago and it reported only the areas that actually ran.) A cherry on top might be to have a tiny number inside the cloud icon to report rainfall for each day from the weather service. Thanks for the good job, programmers!
Needs to handle faucet timer differently
by -Jarret- on 2018/07/11 17:48
Overall the system seems to work pretty well. The smart watering seems to delay watering too much, but this may depend on how the weather is reported in your area and changes throughout the day. The real problem comes down to the handling of the hose faucet timer. If you have only one it would be fine, but with two or more it becomes annoying. The app should handle multiple faucet timers as individual zones all on the same plane. Right now you have to change the device through a series of menus to see all the settings for it. It would be better if when you set up a zone for a device it just added it to the zones list like it does for Orbit’s other controllers. That way the calendar view would show all devices/zones from one view and you could modify each zone from one menu. Doing this would make it much better for the faucet timer.
A well designed app that works, plain and simple.
by Fire_Bro on 2018/07/25 16:08
There seems to be a large gap between ideal design and economic design. In other words a designer comes up with a product and prototypes a proof of concept that works beautifully (ideal design) then after the suits (bean counters and shot callers...etc no offense to anyone) get a hold of said concept the end result is a hodgepodge’d clumsy version or the original, yea I understand why production changes are made from POC like production cost and withholding specific features in order to prolong market saturation of said product..blah blah blah.. However with this product, it is when I say, is a rarity when such a simple yet elegant interface to the ever elusive automatic sprinkler system. This app truly works every time and is user friendly..Kudos to the B-Hive team! You have done well!
Good but not great.
by PhredGarbage on 2018/08/01 15:45
This is a review of the entire system not just the app. I installed the B-hyve irrigation control system 5 months ago to manage the sprinkling of a part-time residence. It’s a great concept but it doesn’t live up to it’s promise. Or hype. I’m not sure it is even marginally better than a regular programmable control. I have reverted half of my watering circuits back to old-fashion programmable watering and am closely monitoring the other half to see if there are any real benefits to using the sensing controls. My data weather station is less than a mile away but the watering does not seem to track the weather very well. It consistently over-waters despite me regularly resetting the water duration and sensing factors. I’m watering more than ever with no appreciable benefit. The only real positive are the notifications I receive when it waters and the ability to monitor and control watering remotely. So there is that.
Indispensable For Water Control
by Videodroid on 2019/05/04 03:17
This is so much more convenient then the original non-smart timer I was using for years. What a pain to program. To effectively review this you have to take into consideration not only the app but the b-have hardware and how they work together. I have had nothing but success with this app. It is a little confusing switching between setting smart water time and regular schedule time settings. It wasn’t too obvious at least to me and took some trial and error. Second shortcoming is I cannot seem to log into my account from the app. But that doesn’t take away from the overall usefulness of the app. Other than that functionally is fine and the ability to use an image of the zone in the app is a nice touch.
Soil moisture estimated
by Rob and Di's Account on 2018/08/07 02:19
The app has a few improvements that would make it more robust. Rain delays, the app is supposed to notify the user, never has for me. The weather data does not appear to be as localized as I think it should. There might be rain in Salt Lake and not in Ogden but the system will run a rain delay. It would be a great improvement if the system would be able to use and connect to soil moisture sensors Reporting... would be great to print or email a watering report. Viewing the watering history on the app, causes the app to crash at random. Right now it is August, the app does not appear to be increasing the watering times or schedule to accommodate the extra heat. I had someone install the timer but they only measured with the cups on two zones, might resolve some of my issues if all zones had been measured. I have two zones that are at the extreme one waters 3 minutes the other 8 minutes each run, the grass is dead in the 3 minute zone. Aside from the issues above the timer works great, it runs the smart timer program, and stays connected to wireless network. Keeps time and with a few exceptions most areas have improved conditions and it saves water. This time replaced two old programable timers that had issues keeping time and losing their program settings.
B-Hive software by orbit
by Larrycr5 on 2018/08/01 02:30
This has been one of the most intuitive programs that I have worked with. I am really happy with the way that it works. I program my orbit 12 station programmable timer with nothing but my phone or my iPad, which is a whole lot easier than trying to program from the control board on the machine. I haven’t opened the control in two years that I have had it, and I have used nothing but my iPhone and iPad to work it with. Overall I am very very happy with the orbit beehive software. I am also very pleased with the remote that they have put in it that you can choose any one single station or two or three stations and water for however many minutes you want in addition the normal standard programming.
A REAL MONEY SAVER
by jjpgator on 2018/07/21 12:18
This app and irrigation device have saved us hundreds of dollars in needless irrigation costs, not to mention the water waste. The convenience of activating or deactivating any or all zones from my smart phone or iPad is also a huge plus, no more crawling around shrubbery in the rain to deactivate the irrigation timer. I only wish it would come with its own rain gauge that could be set to deactivate the system when a pre-set amount of precipitation occurs AT THE LOCATION OF THE DEVICE. Currently, it works based on the local weather station's prediction of rain which may or may not be what actually falls on our property. However, that said, I haven't been able to find an irrigation control system that does that yet, so this has to be the best out there so far. Simple to use and easy to set up the app.
Excellent!
by run40run on 2018/07/23 05:08
I had a different brand’s smart irrigation system control that cost twice as much, didn’t even work half as well, and died completely 18 months after installation! The B-Hyve was super easy to install and use and is totally reliable. I’ve never had an issue with the app. Configuration was a snap, use is a breeze and the “smart” feature is amazing! The last system I had could never get the forecast right and I’d often have the sprinklers going off in the middle of a thunder storm. 🙄 It also frequently lost connection to my network, wouldn’t alert me, and would have to be restarted numerous times before it would reconnect. It also gave multiple false control valve errors leading to unnecessary expenses trying to find, diagnose and fix a problem that only existed in the not-so-smart controller. I’ve NEVER had a single one of these issues with the B-Hyve! It’s always spot-on with the forecast, never loses network connection, and has never reported a problem that didn’t exist. I LOVE my B-Hyve and recommend it to everyone! I fully intend to upgrade to the 12-zone once I expand my irrigation system. I hope Orbit never discontinues the B-Hyve!
Orbit App
by joe0999 on 2019/04/21 19:50
Really to like it on my phone and iPad. Simple to use and change zone parameters. No longer use manual controls on main control box. Been using it for 2 plus years with no issues. Just started it up for its third season. All programs retained from last year real simple. Reliable and simple way to control sprinklers. Like the rain delay feature. Can turn on sprinklers from anywhere. Also useful when repairing sprinkler heads no need to run into house to main control box. Looked at another control unit at twice the price but like the controls on Box if WiFi is down as backup plan. Great value and price point for this control unit. App is also bullet proof.
Great App. Enjoy the flexibilty
by Rodney2323 on 2018/12/06 04:41
I fully appreciate being able to modify the schedule on the fly when I'm away from home for business. My wife doesn't like playing with the module. I also like the verification of watering cycles. On my old system, we had a power outage on 2 occasions, and the unit defaulted to original settings. It watered every zone at max default setting twice a day and every day. I had no clue, and a nice water bill. The only hiccup I had was while I was away on business once. We had our WiFi router upgraded and I lost my connection until I got back home. I wasn't even going to try having my wife add the app to her phone and do the setup. Forget about it.
Works well.
by Palmer household on 2018/11/04 18:58
I’ll start off by saying the I’m not the most tech savvy person. I had a sprinkler system at my old house and never used it due to the difficulties. It was some old rain bird system with like three buttons. Absolutely hated it. When we moved into a new house it had a similar controller. Well I wasn’t going to do that again. I haven’t tried all the systems out there but I can say that this one works. Very easy to program using the app. NOAA weather alerts and delays work as they should. Also super simple to install. Kinda feel dumb for not getting one for the old house. Gifted one to my dad and he loves it as well. Long story short I’d recommend it. Hope this helps.
Good Controller and App
by H2OSimplified on 2018/09/22 19:06
Just installed 12 Zone system. Everything went smooth, including the WiFi connection. The App is very simple to set-up and operate. Only one minor issue has occurred, not affecting its operation. I initially created a third program “C” for watering 4 zones twice. I then decided instead to just use a second start time. Problem is the app won’t allow me to delete the un-needed program”C”. If the zones and start time are deleted, it returns an entry prompt before allowing a save and exit. I turned the program off, so no big deal, but it does continue to show as a resident program on other screens. Otherwise I am quite satisfied the purchase and product.
The Way to Water
by abqcleve on 2018/10/20 14:25
I agree with some reviewers here (and the developer) that "Smart Watering" may be a little over-thought in the current rev. With it off however, this is an outstanding tool. With my Orbit wireless controller, programming is extremely simple to use and flexible. I love that I can check a sprinkler 100 yards from the controller with out having to run back and forth. The automatic rain delay that skips a cycle if rain is in the day's forecast is very helpful (and earned a $30 rebate from my SW city), but can be aggressive in an area where showers can be hit and miss; but I can override from my office desk very easily. Overall, one of the most useful and favourite apps in my phone/pad. Good work!
Better than expected
by laraldo56 on 2018/09/08 03:30
I wanted to get a smart hub to control my irrigation system and saw several models that cost much more than this. I had a hard time justifying spending $200-$300 for a timer and when I saw a 12 zone model that could control 62 sprinkler heads I have for about $107 I was skeptical it could be as good as the others. However, this has exceeded my expectations and one of the best values of any item I’ve purchased recently. Installation was easy, setup was even easier. In about 20 minutes I disconnected my old timer, installed and mounted the new one, and set up 3 programs on different intervals to water alternating parts of the yard. Great product
Awesome if they could get a handle on the glitches.
by Neddynedned on 2018/08/27 14:01
The system seems to be a great product. I’ve been using it now for the whole summer. The app is intuitive and very easy to set up. It’s easy to set watering times and programs. But the glitches... I’ve uploaded pictures of my watering zones maybe 6 times and the software doesn’t remember them. The WiFi no longer connects. It says the password is incorrect even though all my other devices work with that password. This means that I have to use the Bluetooth feature to connect to the device. So I’ve got to stand outside my home within feet of the sprinkler timer to control it. I might as well just use the sprinkler timer and not the app. I don’t want to go to the trouble of returning this product because of the time it takes to install so I guess I’m stuck.
Mostly good
by AirFail on 2019/03/10 01:28
3/9/19 update: It’s the Saturday before Daylight Saving Time (so that can’t be the problem), and all of a sudden the app shows my lawn will be watered next Saturday instead of tomorrow – Saturday is restricted; Sunday is the only day we are allowed to water legally. I will be watching to ensure it doesn’t water next Saturday. It’s never done this before. UPDATE: Ongoing problem (they’re looking into it); I noticed the app showed it would water one zone for a minute, but it watered all but one zone and watered a couple for over a half hour. Thinking about shutting off Smart Watering until after hurricane season. 😕 Don’t know if they fixed the flaky way changes didn’t take immediately (or with closing and reopening app or with rebooting mobile device). I have smart watering set for twice a week. Got notification of rain delays two days in a row, but then the lawn was watered anyway (app notified me after it watered the lawn in the middle of the night, which is the best time to water). If I had been notified in advance, maybe I could have figured out how to override it. Otherwise, the app has saved a lot of water and, therefore, money. Hope they keep improving.
Best I know of but still needs work
by JR80123 on 2018/07/25 22:52
App and controller provide most of the functions I need but it’s missing a few. I can set up multiple programs to control different areas that have different watering needs. The manual rain delay works well. The internet based rain delay does not work in my area because nearby localized thunderstorms turn off watering when my yard didn’t get any rain. Instead I am using a rain sensor in my yard with mixed success due to poor connectivity. I wish I could inactivate rain delays for some programs because some zones have overhead roofs or heavy trees that prevent rain getting to them. Initial frustration was caused by lack of logical structure in the app. Functions are there but hard to find and hard to remember - leading to lots of time spent searching.
The best controller
by MrMophoto on 2019/05/11 20:41
I replaced an older Orbit controller with the newer model, the wiring was exactly the same so installation was less than half hour. The app was just as easy to download and program, I was done in under an hour start to finish. So far the app seems extremely easy to use. This was the beginning of a new season and I had to check all the heads in manual mode to make sure they were working properly, again very easy. As part of the installation I put in my address and I just got a notification that there is a 23 hour delay because of forecast rain, yes it is supposed to rain most of the day tomorrow, how cool is that!
Good and terrible
by D957 on 2018/07/18 13:48
I’ve used the app for a year. - Ability to start or test sprinklers from phone is surprisingly useful and hard to live without it. So why 2 stars for useful app? IT IS BUGGY and features don’t work. - have lots of practice living without it because it lost connectivity over the winter and it was a mess getting it to reconnect. Lots of web comments from people with same problem. - app does decent job of showing watering history but only if that watering didn’t happen on current day. - it used to have a nice graphic showing status of current cycle but now briefly flashes that screen then is replaced with something else. - feature to select nearby weather station starts searching but cannot find anything. There are 2 weather bureau stations nearby that I could chose from last year but when I recovered connectivity with the water controller I lost ability to connect with station. - rain delay feature useless presumably due to weather station problem. - error messages related to connectivity are misleading. Having it is better than not having it and the smart watering seems like it would be very useful but with the weather station problem smart watering unlikely to work.

The app in theory is great however after using it for a few months I noticed the plants in the back yard all started drying out even though I had the smart water setting turned on. There are many questions that you need to answer in order to get the proper amount of water and I’ve ensured everything there is correct. I noticed the plants were only being watered every 2-4 days which is a problem when it’s over 110 out. There is a setting to slide the bar to the right to adjust the frequency up but I cannot get the app to save this adjustment. I finally switched to a manual program but that defeats the purpose of having a smart irrigation system. I tried calling for help and after an extended wait time the call was disconnected. If I can get this working I will change my rating to 5 stars.
Amazing device
by Johnme242 on 2019/04/12 01:19
I have burned through so many Rain Bird and Orbit Sprinkler controllers cause the contacts always die on the switches. I took a chance on this. At first I was uncomfortable with it having no display. Then I set it up. Everything displays on my iphone or ipad. It is beyond great. Live local weather tells the thing when its raining and shuts off the water. Several programming options. Manual water from the iphone, you name each zone with the Name you want to give it. If i could redesign it; there is nothing i could think of to add. Last time I saw an app put together this intuitively well ...was the Iphone itself..this is the future..love it
Not enough control - works “most” of the time
by Font420 on 2018/07/18 14:20
When it works, it’s great. You can setup the automatic schedules, run manually, etc. However, there are 2 issues... 1- The device itself constantly disconnects from the WIFI. This in turn somehow ends up messing up the time/date, despite the fact it should get the time/date directly from the internet. The only way to usually fix this is to disconnect the unit and reconnect it and then re-set the time. During these periods, you cannot connect via the app. The Bluetooth connection option also works “most” of the time. 2- You cannot view the time via the app. In other words, if the system disconnects from WIFI or there’s a power outage, you cannot confirm via the app that the time/date are still correct. So, app is great when it works, but when there are issues, you have to resolve them directly from the unit itself. When out of town and trying to schedule or validate information remotely, many times you cannot do anything until you get back home and can check the unit directly. They need to make the app mimic the UI of the device itself and allow you to make any change/setting you can make on the device itself.
Would NOT recommend

We have 2 other monitoring devices in our home connected to internet as we travel frequently and need to monitor when we travel, so we thought we’d install a monitoring device for our home sprinkling system. The B-hyve unit was easy to install, however, will not stay connected to our internet (we have NO problems with the 2 other WiFi-monitoring devices). Our router is 3 feet from the B-hyve and it still goes out EVERY time the WiFi bars move (for just a ‘tenth’ of a second) from full bars to 2-3 bars (bars go back to full, but the unit still ‘disconnects’). I am able to reconnect the WiFi from our home where it is installed (which was every day), but traveling I am NOT able too reconnect. I’ve called the technical department several times, but they were unable to help unless I am at the home. It’s useless, and I am returning it.

b-hyve

This was a simple app to set up and connected right away to my b-Hyve. The walk through was very quick and testing zones what super cool. One issue is the app overlaps info on the top left and right on the phone which is a little annoying.

by Joe T 49 on 2019/05/19 02:42
I have only used the app for a couple hours but I am not new to Bluetooth or WiFi. Difficulty pairing, not intuitive zone editing, zone testing works, got message Re manual watering which I did not request. All in all, either the app needs work or I need training. Have not yet tried to set up schedules.
When it works it’s awesome... when it works.

I just changed the batteries in my device and it is connected to my phone, but won’t do anything. I tried to start a manual water but it tells me that the process is taking too long. It’s a pity because I used to love this thing.

by Gh3rm4nn on 2019/05/19 00:06
No problem connecting to WiFi. Only negative is how difficult it is to remove transformer cover to connect direct to AC. Removing the transformer cover took more time than the full installation (mounting to outside wall, connecting all wires, testing stations). App works well and notifications are nice. Have had no issues with disconnects or app issues.

by A-nong on 2019/05/18 22:23
It’s more difficult than it should be to adjust.

I’ve been using the b-hyve and app for a couple years and love the convenience, ease of use and functionality. One thing I have never found is a way to manually run all zones with a single menu.

:) nice.

The app lets us know when the sprinkler is paused for rain. I love not having to remember to turn on and off for rainy days. And I can control it all from my phone.
Good hardware, terrible software

Time to redesign the app
by koa1aboi on 2019/05/15 06:09
I like the functionality of the system. It works. But everything about the interface is so dated. You’re way behind Rachio and other smart devices in this regard. Even the icon looks tacky. Invest on app designers to keep up with the times.
Solid app for a solid timer!

I’m impressed. Feature packed, yet still relatively intuitive to set up, program and operate. This is not your father’s sprinkler timer!

1. Ability to set water budget for all programs at once 2. Water budget percent shown on program slots screen when not at 100% 2. Ability to schedule zones out of order in a program 3. Ability to schedule a zone more than once within a program 4. Ability to copy a program and edit rather than having to start from scratch

My water main has been shut off due to a broken valve. It is repaired now and I want to run the sprinklers. I can’t find how to do that. I need to have that control. I need a user manual. Where can I get that? My lawn is dry and I am Frustrated.

Megatran
by Megatran Jax on 2018/07/20 20:05
I installed two Orbit 3 valve manifolds together and wired it to the 6 zone WiFi sprinkler timer.

Nice!
Good Job!

Orbit App
