Citizen - Protect the world
Description
Get real-time safety alerts and live video of incidents happening near you. Citizen notifications have urged people to evacuate burning buildings, deterred school buses from nearby terrorist attacks and have even led to a rescue of a 1-year-old from a stolen car. Citizen may notify you of a crime in progress before the police have responded. It's meant to protect you and your community — please use it responsibly. Real-time Safety Alerts: Location-based notifications help you avoid potentially dangerous situations. Live Breaking Video: Watch live video of an incident unfold from different angles or broadcast live from the scene. Keep Your Community Safe: Report incidents right when they happen to protect the people around you.
Citizen BEGS for your data
by RileyF on 2020/02/18 19:13
In version 0.975.0, the developer added a bright red banner to the UI that’s permanent unless you allow the app constant access to your location data. I suspect there’s been a recent decline in users willing to surrender this information, and I further suspect that this hurts Citizen’s bottom line since user location is presumably one of the only monetizes left aspects of the app.
Forcing me to always allow location access
by Ihopethisnicknameisnottsken4 on 2020/02/18 18:59
Limits functionality if I do not “Always” allow location access.
Disappointed
by Head_Ass98 on 2020/02/18 11:24
This app just kept saying turn on your location when it was already. I had others try to see if I was doing something wrong and it wouldn’t work for them either. I was so excited to find this app just wish it would work.
No updates
by Dots and Completely annoyed on 2020/02/18 10:06
"Home burglary 45 feet from your location" ...Is the burglar still at Large? Should I check my backyard?! Guess I shouldn't leave my house for... Ever? No updates to these situations makes it pretty useless.

Number sold?
by Mazenhelkhatib on 2020/02/15 22:58
As soon as I installed this and added a clean number that didn’t get spam, I got a bunch of spam call up until today. That’s a week of crap phone calls since I installed this app. Thanks but no thanks. I removed your app.
Location setting
by milomndr on 2020/02/15 15:48
I like the app let’s me know what is going on in my area. But the constant red notification because I don’t want my location always on is really annoying. I get it. You want me to not walk into a dangerous situation. But let me remove the red notification if I decide not to.
Moderation Needed
by pressed4tym on 2020/02/15 14:37
This app is a haven for white racist internet thugs. Every alert, no matter what the alert is about, is full of trolls pushing racism, politics and just hate in general. When you report an inappropriate post, it disappears but when you leave the post and come back to it, the same inappropriate post comes back. Who is moderating? Please do something about this ASAP.
App keeps crashing!!!
by lizzyyyyyy98 on 2020/02/13 19:02
This app is really useful, especially since I live in a bad neighborhood for college. However, even though I get notifications, whenever I try to open the app it crashes immediately or just keeps loading forever. Really wish I could use this, and it feels terrible to get a notification about an abduction or something and not being able to help or find more information about it.
Very helpful!!

Add More Cities

Pretty good
by Wongoli on 2020/02/06 10:50
This is my only critique, you shouldn’t be able to spam unlimited emotes on alerts. Small flaw but it can look ridiculous when a murder alert gets 1 shocked face, 15 angry face, 20 prayers, and 999 hearts because 1 person spammed it.
Terrible UI
by lzksjsjsjsj on 2020/02/06 05:47
It becomes borderline unusable with alerts and warnings unless you share your location always. Fix this.
The latest update is a mess
by Flindir on 2020/02/02 05:34
There is a red banner begging you to turn on location tracking “always” But if you don’t do that, you see the banner forever
Good app but...
by Busted24 on 2020/02/01 23:38
The app is honestly good, didn’t know how much stuff really happens in my relatively quiet neighborhood. My only complaint with the app is the amount of people who blame minorities for the any bad thing that happens on the app seriously. The alert could say “smoke in apartment” and in the comment section all you’ll see is people blaming it on black people Obama era laws. And also how we have a mayor who “loves black people” (they really use a more derogatory term for black people) and that’s why incidents are on the rise in New York City at least. I just wish the developers would take a harder stance against racist comments as it seems people are free to just call black people the N word and other minority groups derogatory terms and blame them all for any issue that’s happening in the city with no consequences at all.
Must location all the time
by Rowensai on 2020/01/31 12:53
I understand if I want to have the full app experience you must have location services on all the time, but the app won’t let you have any other choice. This lead me to think your tracking my geo data. I don’t value 2 mins of app use with 24/7 geo data mining. I have reinstated my choice to not give you my data by deleting your app.
When is New Lenox available on this app?

Forces me to set location permissions to “always”

The app forces me to have location permissions set to “always” - I cannot progress past a splash screen asking me to change this. Uninstalled
Updates ruining app
by Truththisboxer on 2020/01/28 23:14
I despise the red rectangular box constantly on screen forcing users to open location service at all time so this app can violate your privacy 24/7 and wear down your battery. Not safe and Apple needs to have a look at this and disable Previous review: I want to be able to check on my home city when out of town as I was able in the past, extremely difficult now. Nyc only show recent popular events. I want to access up to the list for entire city. That can no longer be done if out of town. The new mapping system is not a step up, very annoying. The history also vanishes and is not searchable
Remove citizen comments
by Flagcrafter on 2020/01/27 04:37
While it is helpful to know any emergency situations in your area, citizens and neighbors take the comments too far. Some of the comments are rude and offensive, not helpful at all. The videos are terrible.
Decent enough
by twoarmscollin on 2020/01/27 00:54
I haven’t used any other apps like this, so I can’t say much. However, it’s got a good ui and is easy to navigate. My main issue is that there’s a red bar at the bottom of the app screen telling me, no - insisting that I change my location settings for the app. It blocks the bottom of the map, and when I select an incident it blocks the little info card that pops up. I get it - you can’t warn me of danger if you don’t know where I am, of course. But it’s SUPER annoying not to be able to close that dialogue bar. My issue with keeping location limited to while using the app is not privacy related, it’s battery related. Location services chew up my battery life. If my phone dies, not only can’t the app warn me, but I can’t call for help either! Let us disable that dumb bar each time we open the app. I don’t mind being reminded, this is pushy though. Loses two stars for that.
Needs NEW management
by ***BAM***BAM*** on 2020/01/26 20:30
Don’t try and be a breaking news app, I don’t give a **** that some pro ball player was killed in a plane crash 2500 miles away. That is NOT a national disaster alert. Figure out what your app is... all kinds of s#*+ going down around me but you want to tell me about something 2500 miles away? Grow up? I have now turned off notifications for this app because of this. There is no way to filter the info you get from this app or set hours you want to receive alerts, or quiet times.
Only works for major cities
by summer rae 12 on 2020/01/26 17:58

Crisis inducer
by kaligari834 on 2020/01/23 20:01
This is a direct analog to the ‘crisis inducer’ from Douglas Adams hitchhikers guide. Once we’ve sorted all of our issues we still have a strange need to create some manufactured crisis. Paranoia, paranoia, da-da-da-da-da.

by Tony_Baloni915 on 2020/01/17 07:56
HOW IN THE HELL IS THIS APP NOT AVAILABLE IN CHICAGO YET? It’s literally the 3rd most populated city in the United States. I had to be petty & take off two stars, but whatever I’ll see myself out.
Let nearby events be how near i want them to be.
by IceburgSandwich on 2020/01/16 21:49
I’m going to be completely honest. I don’t care if a woman died a mile and a half away. It’s tragic for sure but it simply doesn’t affect my day to day life enough to warrant a notification. i’m not going to venture out and stream it. It’s too far. I live in a big city, it’s rare someone DOESN’T die. Let me control how far i want to be notified from things. The app is about safety afterall? I’m already safe from some lady dying a mile in a half away. This app sends me a notification of it anyways. IMO, it seems the app data collects and wants people to open app. “Major incidents in your area” notifications are CLICKBAIT. 1.5 miles away IS NOT MY NEIGHBORHOOD. 500 FEET IS. Let me control the distance of events that notify me. If something is happening two blocks away. Notify me. If there’s a shooting in the area *im entering*, notify me. The app is about my safety. 1.5 miles away isn’t about my safety. It’s about profit.
Shooting videos in wrong orientation
by Hollywoodmozart on 2020/01/16 19:24
Some people have yet to figure out that shooting video in landscape, like virtually all monitors in the entire world are set for, nets you more screen real estate and eliminates those ridiculous black bars on both sides of the screen. Just a simple heads up benefit that costs nothing to do it right. Duh.

Stop with the location requests already
by Merf merf merf on 2020/01/14 15:40
I just don’t get it; I will never give your app background location access so provide a workaround that isn’t insanely hostile. Covering your own UI with a garish red toast is just bad design. Especially when coupled with the annoying modal pop up that I have to close every time I open the app.
Requires tracking in background.. deleted
by C Dog @ USA on 2020/01/14 03:07
No option to use this app unless you allow it to track your location 24/7 even if not using the app. You can’t just open it to check your area. They promise to protect your data though, so there’s that...of course nobody is immune to data breaches, and this app isn’t worth the decreased battery life or this tracking requirement. Deleted it.

The developer should get the hint. Forcing always on is a no-go.
by Disconbobulate on 2020/01/13 03:11
Apple provides the option to only use location services while using the app for a reason. This app refuses to function unless location is turned to always on. This is far and away the biggest complaint in other reviews, and the developer’s response is bordering on non-sensical. It should be against Apple TOS to design an app in such a manner. I suppose it doesn’t matter. This app has been uninstalled already. Good idea. Horrible developer.

I tried everything, right when I had given up thinking my phone was ruined I got it to force restart. Please address this issue and I’ll come back.. scared the crap out of me
Insists on ALWAYS tracking your location
by rm_77 on 2020/01/10 15:41
This app intrusively requests to track your location at all times in the background. I strongly disagree that sharing my location 24/7 will make me safer as suggested by the developer. Deleted the app until this is requirement is removed.
TOO MANY RACIST COMMENTS
by UsedTamp on 2020/01/08 19:59
The title speaks for itself. Moderators turn a blind eye to sarcastic, mean, and racist comments directed at black people while other users who comment on crime issues are blocked if they make a statement concerning poor police patrols related to any incident mentioned on the app.

Location Access Requests Unacceptable
by Hispeedzintarwebz on 2019/12/29 06:26
This app is too location-hungry. Why have a search bar if location is required? I don’t need to give yet another company - despite their “just trust us” privacy policy - constant access to my whereabouts. App will not let you use it without location access. Unacceptable. Deleted.
CAUTION THIS APP CANT BE STOPPED FROM USING YOUR CAMERA
by Mel196077 on 2019/12/28 16:17

Tries to force location sharing to “always”
by Jeratain on 2019/12/26 23:43
I love the Citizen app and have read their privacy policy, but their latest updates are basically trying to force users into always sharing their device location instead of “While Using”. I don’t want Citizen Safety Alert Notifications. I don’t want to always share my location with Citizen. Don’t try and force it unless you want me to uninstall your app. If they rework this notification I will update my review and rating.
Great App. Really keeps me safe.
by 215aiden_ on 2019/12/25 22:12
The app really provides the information that I need to make sure that I am safe throughout my whole entire day. For example. There was an incident with a man with a weapon around the corner from my house. I stayed away and made sure I told all of my loved ones to keep away until later. I recommended the app to the them just to make sure they are safe
Frustrating
by dciefuefieficirec on 2019/12/25 17:05
Incidents disappear if you back out of them and they can’t be found again. Just now a wall collapsed in an apartment nearby. I accidentally backed out of the app. Now I’m looking for the incident and it is nowhere to be found in the app. This app only shows me incidents in a big city 7 miles away in the feed and completely ignores my community. It’s a waste of time when it only tries to show me incidents so far away.
Thanks for helping
by Jaime is the Valonqar on 2019/12/25 14:36
One point off because of the comments. They can be stupid and should perhaps be eliminated. Otherwise thank you Citizen. It was this app that finally helped me decide to actually move out of NY. The amount of petty crime going on around my home is depressing. Some emergencies probably don’t need to be in there but you’ve got to take the good with the bad.
Makes me aware
by Vanessa.a.m3 on 2019/12/25 04:34
Love this app. Just moved to NYC and was a bit naïve for the first couple months, until I downloaded this app. I realized that I need to be life aware of my surroundings and should use caution around certain areas and at different times of the day. Bonus: love the Santa sightings alerts on Christmas Eve. So cute
App is so very inaccurate

App wants ALL of your data
by MorbidBlessing on 2019/12/22 23:42
This app now requires your phone number, email address, and location services to use. No thanks. Not to mention, the moderators are selectively racist, allowing comments about some races, and deleting others. When you can’t identify a criminal on the run, what’s the point?

interesting concept but “new Map feature” pops
by MBAmbs on 2019/12/17 20:00
interesting idea and i want to explore the app, but their new feature keeps popping back repeatedly which prevents me from using the app at all. I don’t need multiple on a single “feature upgrade”. There must be an error in the code which doesn’t get out of the loop. Please fix the code.

Location
by mmod516 on 2019/12/13 16:45
I refuse to give apps my every location and the citizen app no longer works well without giving it full access. Previously I would turn on the app and there would be all sorts of incidents around me. Now, there’s barely anything, and I am certain it’s not suddenly a crime free zone. I am using it less and less.
Stop forcing uses to turn on always-on location tracking
by Jazzwall on 2019/12/11 20:24
I’ve given Citizen app to use my location whenever I use the app. And this was just fine up until the latest update where it is showing a big red notification bar saying I should switch to “always”. There’s no way to remove that red bar that takes up valuable real estate in an already cluttered interface. They are basically trying to force always-on tracking. This should be a user choice, not forced upon by the app!
What happened?
by Mandroid321 on 2019/12/11 15:57
Just go back to the old format. App is unusable now. Crashes, constantly asking for location, navigating ui is horrendous.
Good but too many racist comments.
by grittyblob on 2019/12/11 03:24
Good app but there’s A LOT of blatant racism and sexism in the comments. Developers you need to figure out a way to regulate it or ban comments all together because it is utterly disgusting.
Doesn’t work like I thought
by Lickibitch on 2019/12/10 20:40
In LA, app only reports calls from LAPD and maybe, just maybe, LASD. Doesn’t report, municipal stations like Hawthorne PD, Lawndale Sheriffs, Long Beach PD, and so forth. Include these stations, and you will be worthy of 5 stars.
Location Request

No control over what is posted
by Babytoes on 2019/12/09 15:27
I downloaded this app because I thought it would be helpful in keeping track of crime in my area. That, it does, but if you want to read comments posted without moderation, see absolutely everything that happens blamed on the homeless, read comments more suitable for a jr. high message board, or watch a video of a guy peeling fruit, then this is the app for you.

Asking Too Much
by AngelDN on 2019/12/08 15:33
Why would you need so much access? 21st century data intrusion/hacks suggests this is a no-no. The while using option should be sufficient enough to use the app w/o an intrusive red banner that brings attention to the user’s allowance of granted access over the incidents the app is supposed to highlight. Deleted app because it seems either I will be harassed about wanting my location all the time or possibly be subjected to spam calls/advertisements.

by Brook linn on 2019/01/04 21:09
Although it’s frightening to realize the level of crime occurring around the city, I love knowing what’s happening in real time. I’ve avoided a train route where a suspect was alleged to have run. Citizens app keeps me from failing into a state of being to comfortable with my telephone on the outside. I would definitely say it keeps me aware of my surroundings. Additionally, the local news has been using videos captured on the citizens app for their news reports because a citizen with citizens app will always be there before the news van. I especially like the ability to input various neighborhoods and areas to stay informed of my parents, husband and daughters areas as well.
Location-hungry app
by ajw23682642 on 2019/05/08 11:14
I’ve allowed this app access to my location while the app is running, not always. It used to be fine with this: I continued to get alerts for things that happened in the place I last opened the app (which is what I want - I look at recent crime near home, from home, but not near work or from work, 20 miles away). The app had a little notice at the bottom of the screen asking me to change my location setting, but it didn't take up much space or interfere with my use of the app. Recently, the app is becoming more and more obnoxious about asking me to change its location access. It’s notable that the developer has evolved the “give me your location always!” screens to be more frequent, cover more of the screen, and be less easily dismissed. As of this version, it covers the whole screen and a dismiss icon only shows up after the notice has been on screen several seconds. Other than that major impediment to usability, I like the app. I live in the city and appreciate knowing where and when crime has been happening lately. I do wish the default radius were something I could configure, but that’s not a huge problem.
Interesting but needs more moderation
by n64king on 2019/12/02 17:08
They need someone to moderate this more. An Xmas parade is not an incident, to be marked by red. Police blocking off the road for an event is not cause for alarm. What is cause for alarm is when there’s a “woman exposing herself” type event and there’s like 10 comments of people being overly sexual saying they wish they didn’t miss it, people threatening others and cussing up a storm. Also it hinders the app when people post these grainy blurry smudged videos of the aftermath where they can’t hold the phone upright, obviously not a developer issue but it’s nonetheless an issue that takes away from the app. Like you’re warning me about someone with a loaded gun but you’re showing me a blurry video of you waving the phone around in the darkness and you’re yelling into the mic. It’s basically 2020 and people still don’t know how to use a phone. The idea is good and this is still useful but those issues are major.
Fun and informative.
by Amongmany on 2019/05/09 15:05
UPDATE: The always-on location requirement has become even more intrusive (ie you can't use the app without allowing always-on location access). One star and deleted. ====== Woulda been a 5-star review but the app just started prompting for always-on location access EVERY time you open the app. Not cool. Annoying enough that I'm now considering deleting an app that I tend to check on a daily basis. EDIT: The developer was kind enough to respond to my review clarifying that they do indeed perform the action that I've claimed is intrusive and annoying. But it's ok because they promise to protect my privacy in the process. "Hi there, Citizen's mission has always been to keep people informed and protected by using technology responsibly. We ask that you enable your location settings so that Citizen can work in the background, even when you're not using the app, to send you real-time, sometimes life-saving crime and safety alerts. We understand some users are concerned about their privacy when sharing their location data. We can assure you that Citizen protects all user data by storing as little as necessary to run our safety network. We encrypt all data and connections. And we will never share or sell user data to third parties. If your settings aren't properly configured, you will see a reminder to update them. You can dismiss that modal to continue into the app, but it will appear again the next time you open Citizen."
Needs tweaking
by Staya on 2019/06/10 03:40
Great concept. Two issues need to be addressed: 1) The developers need to enable “filtering of events” so that the map only shows events from the time frame the user designates. For example, you should be able to filter for events that have occurred in the past 24hrs. Or even events that have occurred over the past 2hrs. Or even a map that shows only events that have been reported within the past 30 minutes... 2) In baltimore we frequently get reports of carjackings etc that are 10 hrs off from the the time that it actually occured. The app states that “carjacking was reported on june 6” but does not report the time that the carjacking actually was called in to 911, or even the time that the victim states it occurred. Instead, it gives a time many hours later.
Used to be great, but this newest shady tactic was the breaking point
by EcstaticEgg on 2019/05/08 06:36
I live in a major US city and used to use this app when I saw or heard activity nearby so I could get more info about what was happening while staying a healthy and safe distance away. I had it set to only track my location when I opened the app since that was when I needed it. Now when I try to open the app it shows me a fake alert about “four gunman” nearby and demands I change my settings to allow it to ALWAYS track my location even when the app is closed. It literally won’t let me use the app unless I do this. Well I won’t and I am uninstalling it and you shouldn’t install it in the first place. That is shady and a horrible tactless way to try and get me to give them my personal data. Given all the active shooter situations in the US in the past couple years, the fake alert is exploitative and low. Don’t use this app, don’t give them your data.
New update ruined a great app - bring back the old version
by Louie the goose on 2019/08/03 08:06
The new update is terrible. It really needs to be fixed. I used to use the app all the time and even livestream on occasion. Now I almost never use it after the recent update. The UI is horrible. Not user friendly at all. You can’t zoom out of a one mile radius of wherever you are... you have to manually scroll all over the map to see what is happening in the Bay Area. It takes forever to scroll all around the entire Bay Area outside the of the 1 mile circle. No point in even doing it... I want the old app version back where you can zoom out and look at the entire Bay Area and then zoom into one section or not zoom in. I don’t want to have to scroll all around the entire map and not be able to see the rest of the map. It needs to be fixed or I might as well delete the app. I know I’m not the only person.
Some “Update”
by Karen in Gotham on 2018/02/26 01:55
I really liked Citizen until last week’s update—you know, the one that promised it would play better with the battery. Shortly after the update installed, and despite light usage phone usage, the battery began to drain at an alarming rate. Checking battery usage, I learned that Citizen was the culprit, consuming , on average, ~70+% of my charge. The problem persisted despite logging out and was only resolved when I, reluctantly, deleted it. Your bad, Citizen. If it ain’t broke, don’t fix it. ETA: Meghan, you’re as good as your word. My iPhone battery performance is back to normal and the rating is being boosted accordingly. Thanks for being so responsive!
“Always on” location setting change
by HaringJM on 2019/04/30 02:02
I’ve been using this app for the last year and a half and have loved having a better sense of what is going on in my neighborhood and the surrounding area. But the latest update has taken things from four stars to two. I’ve had small gripes with notification but overall my app experience had been good. Then this recent update required changing location settings from “while using” to “always on” in order to continue using the app. I NEVER let any apps have always on access to my location. Wether companies claim to keep that data confidential (and actually do) or not, in the age of data breaches, lack of data use transparency, and third parties having access to user data, it’s a no go. Will no longer use the app unless this is changed.
This would work
by gemk12 on 2019/04/23 03:36
How about having an option to play video or go live video since many users like to record an incident just to get viewers. Aside from that I’m thankful for this app. I’m more aware of what’s happening around me than before. It’s great knowing that I can be notified if I’m in a dangerous area but I think having that option would be great that way we wouldn’t have unnecessary recordings of someone’s apartment or their pets thats nowhere near the main incident. If its live or a recording we get the option before doing so. Thanks Citizen hopefully this can be added in a future update. thanks.
Needs more features.
by SoFels522 on 2019/07/20 19:40
I have not had a chance yet to use the app because it’s not available in my location. I got the app so that when I’m in the city I go to school in I can stay up to date on activities going on there and know what places to avoid. Therefore it would be nice if they had a search feature so that if it’s not available for your current location you can search up other locations you may be going to so you know where to avoid or what’s going on in that location. It’s a great concept for an app I just wish it wasn’t made to only notify you for what’s going on in your location. Or even setting a certain mile radius would be nice too because then maybe it would be available in a location say 20 miles away if not at your current location.
No longer can recommend this app
by Charlie Harper 2000 on 2019/09/11 15:32
I hate this update, please go back to the old one. It was my go to app and now I hate to check it. Not user friendly!!! - hate the red zone in “alerts nearby” - when one looks at greater view in your home city, the list has NO ORDER TO IT. It’s not sorted by time, distance or severity of incident. It literally makes no sense. Please listed chronologically. - One of the features I specially liked was to look at another city and to be able to VIEW A MAP of an area and zoom in on a particular area. Now it’s just a list of incidences and I really don’t know how they relate to an area that I want to look at. There is no map outside of your home city. Just make all the cities identical. This may be one of the worst updates of any app in recent experience and I am one of the foremost authority’s in this field. Update: When you introduce an update and have 20 comments and all are one star except for one, you know you’ve done something wrong. Remember each comment here represents thousands of users. I used to check this app many times a day now it’s just a few. It is borderline useless. The recent update even made it to a local talkshow. Several callers commented about the reason change and none of it was favorable.
Pile of Nopes
by penandpaperpanda on 2019/07/22 08:10
I downloaded this app after watching a typical middle of the street South Philly battle of words at 2am, and also just for the entertainment of the crazier headlines. but like soooooo many other people on here i wasn’t about to give them “always on” location data, especially when I haven’t even used the app yet. scrolling through most of the reviews the update to this didn’t apparently change the quality of the app and just reduced the quality of the service, and their bland copy and paste response as to why is just an insult. give people the option and just make an app that works correctly regardless of the settings. I didn’t even want to waste my time reviewing this but I really want to pile on the low star reviews to hopefully make them change it back so I could actually eh to see if I even like this app
Useful
by Aryinnette on 2018/01/05 22:39
Citizen is useful to have in order to be informed. At times i am home and i hear the sirens going outside and i really don’t have to wonder what is going on in the neighborhood because it comes up. Citizen is also practical to know what streets are more dangerous or what crimes are taking place in your area. Also they can be ahead of the news since the members of citizens record whats going on at the scene you get a closer view. My only complaint is that when i open the app when i am outside my home it doesn’t work, but that might not be Citizen’s direct fault but that of my internet connection. I have told others about it... it is a great app to download. And its free!
They can still save their app
by Fddggjfdfgddg on 2017/11/18 21:25
First, I used to be able to see what was going on in my neighborhood - now I’m told to look at the crime gossip outside my area without any focus on events close to my location. Second, I used to be able to look up old reports (at least it’d be nice to see the headline?), but they’ve censored the history. No reason to censor it. Finally, the recent feed fights over what’s popular and what’s actually local - so I end up getting updates i’m not looking for as i scroll through the feed. It’s becoming a small mess. Will update stars if they can make it work right.
Love love love this app
by Mary*Ku on 2018/01/09 04:42
Sure, it’s helped me be more aware that it’s a dumb idea to walk around SF, iPhone in hand (put that away!) and let me know what that peculiar odor was a couple of weeks ago. But I *love* Citizen for its delightful random surprises, like the time the guys were fighting at Macy’s, flinging scarves at each other, or when the woman was dancing in the street holding a hot dog. It let me know the time the man at a nearby BART station tried to assault people using a sandwich as his weapon and informed me when he returned later that day, tossing Skittles. You can’t make this stuff up, but you CAN video it.
Location always on.
by AssetDiva on 2019/05/17 22:01
I installed this app and then read the reviews when something didn’t seem right to me. The reviews the reviews about the demands that location and other assorted settings must always be on, confirmed it was a serious issue. Thank you to those who spoke out. Last we need is another battery drain or a phone that wakes you with a blaring sound for minor, non emergency activities. What caught my attention is that the company’s response on the “location always on” issue so far promises to keep all our data collected safe, but gave no demonstration of how they could be trusted to manage this data. An acceptable response would address where in the Users agreement we can find that assurance of privacy and that the contract can not be altered relative to privacy. The level of actions you will take to protect that data or respond to a breach could also be provided. Saying we only hold that data for a limited time still does not address privacy concerns or the battery drain issue. Give acceptable responses and the rating will rise. As many have said in their reviews, there are several situations where the software could be useful for monitoring your safety.
Still crashes at startup. Still waiting for an update that works with the iPhone 5!
by Seriously Needs Update on 2017/11/22 15:26
(Update 11/22) The newest Citizen update now works with older iPhones, however I find that the app does not report all incidents in my surrounding area. There could be a fire or police activity and it won't show up on the app. Also, Citizen developers, if there's a way to archive past incidents on the map, that would be great. It would be really nice to see the activity in a given area over a 6- to 12-month period. (Update 11/21) Finally. Newest update of Citizen now works on older iPhones. Looking forward to using this app again! Bumping the rating back up from 1-⭐️.
Love the app!
by Alex Vinokur on 2018/06/23 17:24
This is an awesome idea! I cant wait for this app to be operational in NJ! Always wanted to know whats going on near me if I see police or fire activity, no more calling neighbors, app notifies you based on your GPS location. This app will become more and more popular, I would say soon we wont need to wait for news channel to arrive at location to provide breaking news as public will be able to record and post it online faster than TV networks. Great idea! Would like to wish Citizen to grow and I have no doubts it will!
Forced you to give them full location access
by audioph1le on 2019/05/02 07:10
The app refuses to run if location access is not set to always. Should allow you to use it when location is set to “only when using the app” even if that limits background alerts. The developer has been responding to me and others saying "If your settings aren't properly configured, you will see a reminder to update them. You can dismiss that modal to continue into the app" but this is not true. There is no way to dismiss that dialog and continue using the app; it takes you back to the "All Access Even When Not Using the App". Even their terms of service now say "In order to use the Service in any manner, you must enable your mobile device as follows: ... to permit the App to access your location (even in the background, i.e., when the App is not open on your device)." and "If you do not enable your mobile device accordingly (including enabling any additional features or functions that sp0n elects to make mandatory for use of the App), the App will not function on your device." Remember if an app is free, you are the product.
Buggy since updating Sep 2
by leigh8200 on 2018/09/04 04:13
One of my favorite features of this app has been how you can select any neighborhood, and see a list of incidents for only that area. But since updating the app a couple days ago, now when I select a neighborhood, it doesn't always show the incident list--it's just blank. Hope this is a temporary glitch... Update: it seems to be working ok now, there just is sometimes a long delay before list pops onto screen. This probably has more to do with wifi issues than the app.
Useful app ruined by bad moderation.
by einexile on 2019/10/12 12:59
Discussion in this app has always been censored for profanity and hate speech, but recently mods have been cracking down not only on unpopular opinion (however politely expressed) but statements of verified fact which fall outside the social justice narrative. Criticism of government policy is also not allowed. For questioning this and asking nicely that it stop I was threatened with a ban. Worst of all, a recent update to the interface dramatically cut the time incidents stay visible on the map, creating a false picture of the severity of crime in a given neighborhood throughout the day. Considering the severity of politically motivated censorship in chat, it's not much of a stretch to imagine the reasons for this new picture of the local crime situation is also driven by political bias.
Intrusive and misleading
by Kisså on 2019/06/07 14:25
You cannot use this app at all unless you allow it to know your location at a times, even when the app is not running. "We ask that you allow us to know your location..." That's a smarmy and misleading statement. It's not an "ask" if that information is required for the app to even open. I wanted this app so I could check in if I heard about something happening nearby (for example, today someone was shot in my office building so I was hoping for more details) but it's not worth it to me to give the app's creator access to my location 100% of the time. Deleted it within three minutes of downloading it. I'll just wait for the nightly news report like the Luddite I apparently am.
Doesn’t inform me of useful incidents around me
by wont connect to tv on 2019/05/01 02:02
I loved the app in the beginning because it gave me a heads up in things happening around me so I could plan better and avoid certain areas but then things started to happen feet or even .5 a mile away and won’t get any notification. I’ll search and nothing. I have walked out to find tons of cops and an abalance and nothing on Citizens. I just walked out the train only to encounter a bloody man passed out on the platform right in front of the door and EMT just showed up. Thanks for the heads up guys! You tell me of a women threatening someone with a broom a mile away but don’t tell me important things that affect me !! Wondering what the use of this is now.
Too much noise
by XenegueX on 2019/04/29 00:55
I’m in California and receiving national news alerts for what happened in Baltimore. These app developers appear to have no focus or clear value proposition. Is this a news app or a social network - they can’t seem to decide. They also really want you to consent to handing over your location data all the time vs only while using the app - and the app will pester you about it every time you open it. Overall, there’s just way too much noise in the app, unnecessary alerts, things that are not important, the alerts that do pop up are usually a couple hours old, and the really weird emoji reaction button is a perfect description of the app - no purpose, no focus, trying to be everything and doing nothing well.
I use to love this app!!!
by Roachzwifey on 2018/02/19 19:56
I have had this app since the beginning and I have lost count to how many people I have told to download and assisted them in downloading. Lately it hasn’t even been useful because I keep getting this message saying we’ve seem to have lost connection blah blah blah.. At first I thought it was because i was traveling and my signal was not good, but once I realized that even if I was connected through WiFi with full signal I would still get the same message. It is a problem with the app. I can’t do anything because it says I have no connection with unlimited data and or WiFi smh
Location services required now
by REDACTED on 2019/05/01 15:29
Can no longer use the app at all unless you allow it to use your location at all times, not just while using the app. It now serves a pop-up requiring you to allow location info in settings before it will let you use the app. Update: it is not true, what the developer says about being able to click past the Location Services pop-up & opt for only while using the app, at least in the version when I deleted the app. In fact I couldn’t click past that pop-up, so Location Always was mandatory. If the developer is lying about that, then what else are they lying about? Using location for other purposes? Selling that data?
It Used to be better
by Dominicanito007 on 2019/05/11 16:13
the best thing about this app was that I could leave my home location and see what’s going on in my neighborhood I don’t really care about what happen every where I go im more interesting about what’s going on in my neighborhood I think they should let us do that and not to obligate people to update their location if they don’t want to the point of me using this app was that I could be out of town and see if there’s was a fired near home on in my building or something like I said I don’t really care about knowing what’s going on in everywhere I go. I hope they can read this and fix it an let me set any location I want
Great app but comments
by Ayymee300 on 2019/07/10 23:22
I love this app, it really is helpful to know what’s happening in your surroundings especially if you live in a sketchy neighborhood. Only thing is I wish there was a way to censor the comments because it’s causing people to lose sight of the actual crimes. People go on the app arguing about race and things that have NOTHING to do with the app. Quick suggestion: remove the comments and make it so nearby users and directly send updates to the police or the app itself instead of the interpersonal communication
Don’t want to share my phone number
by supersuperemily on 2018/10/16 15:28
I enjoyed having this app, and found the information it provided useful, but when it asked for my phone number in order to function (private information I’m not comfortable sharing with them), I had to uninstall it. Before I did, I read through a lot of the terms of service. I am not a lawyer, but it looks as though by sharing video with them, they take over exclusive commercial rights of that data. You can share it with your family, for example, but not share it with a news agency? Anyways, I guess they have to make money somehow but I’m sad there’s not an option to just observe the information or anonymously provide videos.
Desensitizing, irrelevant, sensationalist notifications
by cromo647 on 2019/10/19 01:51
It used to be great, warning about the things happening in my close proximity. Now it's just another sensationalist news app, notifying about the accidents several miles away from me. In NYC, I totally don't care what's happening in a borough literally 2 hours away, where less sensational but more releva events are happening just around the corner. And that's even with an “Only Major Events” setting on. This has completely killed the purpose of this app, which was meant to bring awareness to what was going on in your neighborhood, but it now instead desensitizes to any news altogether, having become another bait’n’click app with noisy notifications.
App wouldn’t let me limit location data
by John Markos O'Neill on 2019/05/20 21:30
Every time I tried to pick an option other than “always allow” location data, the app stopped me and wouldn’t let me proceed. I don’t want to drain my battery, and I don’t want to be constantly annoyed by another app. Deleted. By the way, I see the developer responding to similar complaints by posting boilerplate text making excuses for the location policy. Alert fatigue is not helping anybody. I think it’s paternalistic to suggest that the developer knows better than the customer what alert settings are best. From other reviews, sounds as though the alert radius is not customizable either, so users will get spammed by irrelevant alerts.
Annoying alerts to enable location services
by LTrack on 2019/05/12 23:55
The app opens and holds open a full screen reminder/warning to change location services setting to be always ON. I choose not to have location services always on, yet EVERYTIME I open the app I get the full screen warning...the app forces you to wait a few seconds before the give you the option to close the warning. This make quick glances to see what’s happening impossible & makes the experience just enough NOT fun for me to not use it. Also, some of the comments are disgusting- like response to woman being assaulted included “she probably deserved it”.
Always on location.
by Schwarkee on 2019/05/03 16:21
I heard about this app on a podcast and thought I would try it out. I can’t get past the opening page because it requires you to always allow it to see your location despite showing three choices of always, when using the app, or never. I’m sure I’ll get the standard automated response from the developer about how they don’t use the data it’s just to give me the best service possible but I only want the information when I have time to use the app. I don’t need it always knowing my location. If you pick anything but always on it loops you back to the three choices and eventually your settings to give them always on permission
Needs crime alert radius
by Martholomeow on 2019/01/01 12:11
This app would be great if there was a way to control the radius around my home (not my current location) for the alerts. Right now the only way is by choosing a neighborhood, but neighborhood boundaries are arbitrary. I don't need or want to know about every incident in my neighborhood, but i do want to know about things that happen within a few blocks of my house. This would make the difference for this app going from being an interesting curiosity, to actually being useful. In its current state this app gives too many alerts about things that are happening too far away to be useful.
Developer requires too much
by AdamWeslyGreene on 2019/07/22 23:09
The app requires access to your location and notifications at all times just to even start the app for the first time. They also require a phone number. Never got around to seeing what the app offers because I couldn’t get passed the invasive requirements when you first starting it up. They say all of this is for your protection and they need to be able to alert you whenever. To use the guise of “safety” but also require an unsafe amount of access makes me think this app is up to no good in the long run. For your own personal safety, please don’t give this level of access to a small company that you know nothing about.
Revert back already!!!!
by youg sabage on 2019/09/18 22:59
What’s the holdup???? The update is horrendous. I’ve been a loyal Citizen user as are many of my friends and we’re all pretty much ignoring the app now. Now I noticed Citizen removed my last review. Why????? It’s great that Citizen reps are responding to everyone’s critiques but that doesn’t address the issue of all the horrible reviews. I work for NYC emergency services and none of my coworkers think highly of this new update-regardless of Citizens intentions. Listen to you’re followers NOT the brainstormers. Better. Thank you
Forced Location AND Notifications
by potsnpandas on 2019/05/07 16:52
Like other users have said, the app forces you to always have the location setting on but also notifications on. Whomever decided this was mandatory just lost a bunch of users! EDIT: I received a “response” from the developers which was a generic post that they’ve copied and pasted to other reviews. For me, it’s not just that location is on and that I’m concerned for my privacy. It will certainly drain my battery faster and I just don’t want any more notifications on my phone! I’ve only been sporadically using the app for a couple months and I was doing just fine before using it. Their push for the “safety of its users” seems like a pushy excuse.

Before the last update, this app would only alert me about things happening near where I was. Now I get alerts from all over New York City, and it's been degraded to just background noise. I've looked within the app to see if there is a setting to prevent this from happening, but didn't find one. It seems like this is becoming more of an app for people who want to watch footage of horrific things happening, instead of one for people who just want the chance to avoid a dangerous situation. It's a shame. I really used to like this app, and now I'm close to making the decision to just delete it.
Would love to be able to use this app
by meixellent on 2018/02/26 20:20
Great idea, but it tells me it’s not available in San Francisco, even though my friends that have it get all kinds of alerts...in San Francisco. Seems like they have some backend stuff to work out still. Edit: After four or so tries I got it to actually allow me to sign up. The “Continue” button in the process was constantly grayed out, so force quitting the app and trying a few more times finally worked. Now that I can use the app, it’s pretty useful but the download/signup process definitely needs more dev attention.
Good app but update irritating
by TaliaJD on 2019/05/15 22:53
I like the app, it’s great to stay informed. This update is really irritating though: I don’t want it to access my location at all times though, I only want it when I’m using the app. I should have the right to choose that without having the ridiculous full-screen alert telling me I need to change my settings all the time. I know this is done to make me change my location settings, but it’s actually so annoying and invasive that I’m tempted to delete the app rather than change my settings.
Love the app HATE the comment section
by Cheeks614 on 2019/10/13 21:13
I absolutely love what this app stands for. The crime alerts & notifications are great & helpful in keeping safe. What I can do without the comment section, the comment section has become a place where racism lives. The racism against minorities is at an all time high within the comment section of this app. I have read the most vile and disgusting comments I have ever read in my life, these racist hide behind an anonymous profile. It’s too the point where I’m considering deleting the app. I’m sure my presence won’t be missed, but I hope the developers of this app re-evaluates the comment section.
Settings complaint.
by deno m on 2019/05/09 19:36
Just wanted to know that recent updates to the app now force settings that I don’t necessarily want to configure. It is highly likely I will abandon the app if you don’t straighten this out. You kind of have an interesting app here but I’ve experienced other issues in the past and the help interface is non-existent as far as I can tell. At any rate here are my deal breakers: 1. I am now forced to have location setting to ALWAYS ON or I can’t even get past the screen below. Even if I do, I run into this issue 2. Notifications for safety alerts are MANDATORY. Seriously? I don’t want to know about every screaming hobo but I might want to know about the smoke coming out of the neighboring building and possibly stream it. But I can’t do that because I don’t want alerts and can’t use your product. I don’t get why Citizen would do this. I’ve also seen developer responses stating the notification to update your settings can be dismissed. But I have not been able to do that. Sent from my iPhone
Quit it with the location needs.
by rickveniceca on 2019/05/17 01:51
This is definitely an amazing app with the latest on what may be happening (crime wise) in your area. I’ve been using it for over a year now with no complaints until now. As of recently, the developers have changed the settings so you have to share your location ALWAYS. And also you’ll need to enable ALL notifications. Otherwise every time you open the app, you are forced to change the settings. If you don’t, forgot about using the app. The notification pop ups will take over. One, that’s super ridiculous, considering the options to not share location, or share only while using the app are still “available” options. Two it’s pretty shady, assuming your selling location data for profit, lame. An app that once made me feel more secure and alert, is now going to be deleted unless fixed.
Baltimore fear stoking
by dan8901 on 2019/05/10 19:50
Interesting enough as a voyeuristic tool but has become unusable unless you let them track your location and agree to receive annoying alerts. I assume the business model involves selling location data (though they deny it). What else could explain the inability to use the app w out giving them full access to your whereabouts at all times. In the absence of competent local news this seems like it could be a decent way to keep up w criminal activity but with only a timeline that puts a car overheating in between a mugging and a stabbing it’s hard to make it a go-to app.
Needs a ton of work!
by From me to everyone on 2019/01/31 05:48
I’ve been using this app for a while now and can’t help but think that this app is more for entertainment than it is information. First thing that need to be fixed is the neighborhood selection since it isn’t 100% accurate. I don’t really care about what’s happening 4+ miles away from me. Another thing that needs to change is the option to share pics of missing/wanted people. Writing a vague description isn’t going to help find anyone or keep users safe if the person is dangerous. This app has potential but the kinks needs to be worked out.
Location privacy issues
by PacificRy on 2019/05/30 18:57
This app could be helpful to know a crime is going on nearby. Seeing all the crime reports can make it feel like the crime rate is high, when really it’s not that bad compared to historical rates. Still, it could be handy. The design is nice and it works well. There’s a few privacy concerns that I find troubling. First, the app requires a phone number and email address. Then during sign-up I felt pressured into giving my location “always.” I later set it to “only while using the app,” but now I keep getting an annoying pop-up asking me to set it up “always.”

Disappointed
by Head_Ass98 on 2020/02/18 11:24
This app just kept saying turn on your location when it was already. I had others try to see if I was doing something wrong and it wouldn’t work for them either. I was so excited to find this app just wish it would work.
No updates

"Home burglary 45 feet from your location" ...Is the burglar still at Large? Should I check my backyard?! Guess I shouldn't leave my house for... Ever? No updates to these situations makes it pretty useless.

by Mazenhelkhatib on 2020/02/15 22:58

Pretty good
by Wongoli on 2020/02/06 10:50
This is my only critique, you shouldn’t be able to spam unlimited emotes on alerts. Small flaw but it can look ridiculous when a murder alert gets 1 shocked face, 15 angry face, 20 prayers, and 999 hearts because 1 person spammed it.
Terrible UI
by lzksjsjsjsj on 2020/02/06 05:47

There is no way to filter the info you get from this app or set hours you want to receive alerts, or quiet times.

by kaligari834 on 2020/01/23 20:01

Insists on ALWAYS tracking your location
by rm_77 on 2020/01/10 15:41

Location Access Requests Unacceptable

Some emergencies probably don’t need to be in there but you’ve got to take the good with the bad.

by Vanessa.a.m3 on 2019/12/25 04:34
Love this app. Just moved to NYC and was a bit naïve for the first couple months, until I downloaded this app. I realized that I need to be life aware of my surroundings and should use caution around certain areas and at different times of the day. Bonus: love the Santa sightings alerts on Christmas Eve. So cute
App is so very inaccurate
by AZKelBel on 2019/12/23 01:07
After causing panic in neighborhoods near me, I listened to scanner archives and the info in the app is completely wrong! Way to go! May want to remove it until your info is correctly reported.
No Sound on ver 968

I keep sending support messages about this and every update still doesn’t fix No Sound on videos. Frustrating.
Always on tracking

Always on tracking required to use. Immediately deleted. What purpose does tracking my phone constantly serve me? None
Full of racists

A great place for local racists to get together and talk about crime problems. No thanks.

Super racist that’s all.
Deleted it
by Sweet Deeee on 2019/12/18 05:02
Since the update requiring to have my location settings on ALWAYS rather than while only using the app. Super annoying. Also I find that simple comments get removed while others which most certainly should don’t. Also super annoying.
interesting concept but “new Map feature” pops
by MBAmbs on 2019/12/17 20:00
interesting idea and i want to explore the app, but their new feature keeps popping back repeatedly which prevents me from using the app at all. I don’t need multiple on a single “feature upgrade”. There must be an error in the code which doesn’t get out of the loop. Please fix the code.
Biased or just glitched?

Can’t post, can’t see any posts. Deleted app to download and sign in. Doesn’t allow my number to be input.

It used to update often with small incidents near me... now it doesn’t and only does far away incidents, wtd?

Great until I updated...
by Bily_Goat on 2019/12/16 19:43
This app worked great until the recent update rendered it useless. Been entering the code that’s supposed to send to your phone and it doesn’t let me in 🙄 More than beyond annoyed at this. Don’t think I’ll be using this anymore. You had a great app that you poo-pooed. Sorry not sorry.
Introducing map search popup
by Vinodindia on 2019/12/16 19:43
When I open the app, the pop up for Introducing map search keeps popping up even after I clicked’Got it’. I’m using iPhone and I think it’s a bug. Please fix it
Needs more locations
by Sydneyiscoolx on 2019/12/16 01:35
I like the idea of the app, but as of right now it’s not helpful at all in my area.
Location
by mmod516 on 2019/12/13 16:45
I refuse to give apps my every location and the citizen app no longer works well without giving it full access.
Location Request
by Jerzybird on 2019/12/10 13:16
No. I am not giving you my permanent location. I downloaded the app and immediately deleted it once I read about the change in direction it has taken. What a disappointment.
Best app ever

This app has saved my life I could have been killed
Asking Too Much
by AngelDN on 2019/12/08 15:33
Why would you need so much access? 21st century data intrusion/hacks suggests this is a no-no. The while using option should be sufficient enough to use the app w/o an intrusive red banner that brings attention to the user’s allowance of granted access over the incidents the app is supposed to highlight. Deleted app because it seems either I will be harassed about wanting my location all the time or possibly be subjected to spam calls/advertisements.

Accurate location?
by its.a.secret. on 2019/12/06 02:20
For some reason. This only shows me events in Los Angeles county. Nothing in my city.
I love this app!
by Brook linn on 2019/01/04 21:09
Although it’s frightening to realize the level of crime occurring around the city, I love knowing what’s happening in real time.

Better Before
by julie212121732 on 2018/03/12 01:42
Before the last update, this app would only alert me about things happening near where I was.
