The best maps app for iPhone
Latest update is causing problems
by BlessedJockey on 2019/02/17 10:13
Since the latest update I’m finding that, in navigation mode, the ETA and distance readings are disappearing when you move the map a little bit and also stops automatically moving with my location. Also the “Exit” button disappears so you can only get out of nav by closing the app
Lol

Needs speed limit on screen
by xClarky77 on 2019/02/16 12:15
The app is great, offering quicker route notifications, but a speed limit on screen would make this app 5 stars. Also a setting to ensure avoiding the congestion zones in london would be brilliant!

Recenter doesn’t work
by Awful update on 2019/02/15 17:46
I can’t ‘recenter’ once I move away from that option, so it won’t follow my route - have to close app and re-enter destination. Very annoying. Never had that issue before. 2nd - my postcode takes me to the road next door - also very annoying for friends, taxis as deliveries as anyone using GMs goes to wrong address, often not realising so miss deliveries - Christmas turkey included!!
Apple Watch
by Preeves68 on 2019/02/15 15:38
Brilliant app but please come back to Apple Watch , I would also like a feature which also tells you your current speed and the roads Max speed limit 👍
Used to be good
by Aimstaaa on 2019/02/15 15:20
Always used and recommended this app. But after recent updates with the ‘real time updates’ it doesn’t even tell you the actual bus times now, I’ve used other maps that show buses that aren’t appearing on google maps. I feel so uncertain using this app now, time to delete and find something new.
Virtually bullet proof but new feature for speed camera warnings is unreliable
by Themupster on 2019/02/14 16:27
I have used Google Maps for several years and daily over the past two years with a new job putting me on the road for 800 miles per week. Navigation and re-routing are invaluable, as is the ability to pre-prepare timings to ensure I am never late for a meeting. I’ve always felt it lacking warnings for speed cameras to be an oversight and despite no notification this feature had been recently added, they just appeared. Great, so I thought. However, this is nothing short of useless. Rarely does it pick a camera up, on the odd occasion it does, it can often be just as you have passed one. It may as well announce “congratulations, you’ve just scored three points!” Given the importance of this feature, it needs to be removed until it is totally accurate and can be relied upon. It would also be great to have the speed limit of the road you are on displayed. Hopefully this will be added soon and the speed camera issue resolved.
Good but a few infuriating "features"
by jshado1 on 2019/02/14 09:00
Good and reliable, but a couple new "features" are annoying AF: • the Places Around You that opens itself every time the app is opened and blocks using the rest of the app until it's loaded. • when zoomed into a particular area of the directions, the map will randomly decide to zoom back out. I can do that myself if I wanted, thank you.

by alybiker on 2019/02/13 17:43

Annoyed
by Igpfo5 on 2019/02/13 14:26
Google maps has been great for my previous use but since January it’s been the most unreliable map app ever rabidly placing my location no where near where I am and not following the car when driving making it impossible to use! I know it’s not just an issue with my phone as my boyfriend has had exactly the same issue. Please resolve.
The custom maps have stopped working
by FrankChatz on 2019/02/13 14:04
It’s a great app but has some new bugs recently. The custom maps (created in the desktop version) under the ‘your places’ tab have stopped working. The bookmarks don’t show up on the map anymore and by going back from the legend, the app resets to the home screen. Please fix - this feature is only available through the app on mobile.

Always use google maps so useful to use to see where your going ...
Great but could improve.
by JammyBobber on 2019/02/12 21:29
I would like to see the speed limit for the road in future versions and also a choice of routes like Apple Maps do. It would also be great if you could choose what time to arrive at your destination for your route and get a prediction of the time taken for this journey for future times so you can expect what time to leave at. That would be very helpful!
Great navigation
by Davey SA on 2019/02/12 14:19
I love it that it has the option for cyclists!
Needs key improvements to get 5/5
by 26262626627 on 2019/02/11 21:40
Good app, very reliable there’s a couple of key things missing 1. Adjustable walking speed - Google maps are terrible at estimating walking distances this is especially annoying when you have a train to catch and you miss an earlier one due to it overestimating the time it takes to get to the station. Hopefully there could be a feature where you could set an average mile speed and it calculates timings from that Lastly I would like to see an option where you can just have an ‘only buses’ or ‘only trains’ option this would help as going on multiple buses and trains for one route as this adds up to being quite costly I would like to just be able to take one train and stay on it for a couple more stops instead of catching the bus and walk the remaining distance, this would save money and would most likely be quicker
I would have rated 5 stars but...
by Mat;( on 2019/02/11 19:02
Use this app every day. Fantastic and so close to actual commute times and helps avoid the traffic... However since January the control bar at the bottom of the screen keeps disappearing in navigation so I lose all time distance and other functions. It starts ok but as soon as review route options or pan and zoom the bottom bar disappears and no option but to force close and start again. Please fix

by Havid9488 on 2019/02/10 18:39
Google maps is great. It is better at some things than Waze but waze is better because it gets you to places a lot quicker and as it is user based the traffic seems to be avoided easier.
Have google forgotten about subway?
by Ivannamai on 2019/02/10 15:30
For public transport It shows the options best rout, train, subway, bus however no matter what options you introduce it always gives similar answer forgetting to include subway in buenos aires city. Your own brand created waze for driving. So its app absolutely stopped being useful. There is no need to storage my data in my goggle account where I had ever been and when.
LIMITED!
by Kxnnxdy on 2019/02/10 14:18

There is something wrong with the Last update
by Chicky chack on 2019/02/10 09:03
It wasn’t before but now on M3 going towards M25 my rood is towards Heathrow but navigation tells me I’m going towards Gatwick and in the last moment “keep left to the fork”. On many places it tells me in the last moment that I need to get out from the motorway. If I’m on the most right lane I have no time to move through three or four lanes.

Would be perfect with options for 2D view
by Zero Potentail on 2019/02/09 22:07
How to wreck a perfectly good app, just let the idiot marketing and finance numpties that tell the app writers what to do so the results are a heap of cow dung. 2D is perfectly good. The 3D is awful, but unfortunately crap floats to the top. Deleting app and now using Apple Maps.

by Sammythehammy123 on 2019/02/07 19:14

My maps not working
by Pjl66 on 2019/02/06 10:06
Since the latest update My Maps doesn’t draw your map. It zooms to the correct area but doesn’t draw the map. As this was the main thing I used it for the App is of no use to me anymore. Hope it gets fixed promptly. I would have thought fairly rudimentary testing would have highlighted this issue!
GPS issue
by Baig_hitman786 on 2019/02/06 06:18
GPS is location doesn’t right here in uk. When enter the postcode it’s way out . Plz fix this. The only good thing about google it’s satellite view map.

by DeanGeddes on 2019/02/02 20:07
Brilliant. The latest update to the app finally introduced showing borders of areas on the map. This is something I always wanted in app, Which was present on computers but not in the app. For example if you search for City of London, it will now show you the borders highlighted with a red line around the city of London instead of just pointing to a spot in the middle.

by Enthuser man on 2019/01/31 11:38
I always like to use this app and with its compatibility with Apple CarPlay it stopped me using the unbuilt navigation on my car. However, just recently the live navigation has been WRONG! This is not a signal problem or a CarPlay problem, the navigation works whilst not attached to CarPlay but not with. It appears to be an app integration bug that needs sorting, the last thing I want to do is migrate to Apple maps. Google sort it quick please.

by mslall on 2019/01/31 00:44
I’m a recovery driver and use this app to calculate miles from a collection/delivery point. Recently once I’ve input the postcodes on a few occasions it’s been unable to find the route so I have to manually go onto the internet and search how many miles it is from A-B. This really needs to improve as it can be frustrating trying to work out mileage so you can quote the customer ASAP but it doesn’t want to work.

Great. But beware the ‘AVOID TOLLS’ option! 😡
by sammy-jenkis on 2018/09/05 12:39
Always rely on Google Maps when we’re in the US, and especially liked the ‘Avoid Tolls’ option when you’re in a rental car and don’t want a hefty admin fee from the agency for going through a cashless toll. However I discovered last week that it’s not reliable - drove from Ohio to Staten Island NY with ‘avoid tolls’ selected, no warnings/pop-ups to say anything to the contrary, only to find ourselves at a $15 bridge toll to get over to Staten Island. Turns out there is no way to avoid a toll on to the island, fair enough, but if that’s the case PLEASE GOOGLE can you give us some notification of this when we select the route? I could easily have gone to an ATM and got the money before we got there if I’d known, but the only mention of the toll is hidden away down in the route description, and the top of it still says ‘avoid tolls’. No warnings whatsoever. So I’m now looking at a hefty fine/admin fee that would have been entirely avoidable if the nav info had been more accurate. Yes I know that all New Yorkers are aware there’s a toll, but it was a last minute trip and I trusted google maps to just avoid the tolls if that’s what was selected, or tell me if it wasn’t possible. For future updates, the difference between cash and cashless tolls would be useful info, so we could avoid cashless tolls, but use cash tolls, as that’s what most people out of state are worried about.
Very good, just some volume frustration
by 4rmz94 on 2017/09/24 05:04
Hey, I must say this is a very good free app, it has improved greatly over the last 5 years and I certainly have come to prefer pretty much all aspects of it over iOS maps, only issue is that the music and navigation volumes are not independent. I ride a motorbike so I must use headphones for navigation, usually I do not like to have my music volume too high as I would like to be able to hear if there are hazards approaching (alerting only by their sound, e.g. Fire truck), but when the navigation voice over comes on, the volume is too low, sometimes I end up making the wrong turn, so I turn on the volume during the turn-for-turn notification, and google maps is then at an adequate level but this changing of the volume affects the music playing in the background, and suddenly when that round of google maps instruction is done, the music is blazing in my ears. Why are these two volumes attached, please could you make it separate, as the directions are essentially in app notifications, why don't you attach google maps volume to the ringer volume instead of the music volume, this would've much more convenient, or give it its own separate volume adjuster so that adjusting voice volume doesn't adjust music volume, thank you.

After reading some of the reviews I feel compelled to also to write about my experiences with Google Maps. I am currently working as a delivery driver and completely rely on Google Maps specifically for areas that I am not familiar with or have never been before. Most of the time I can be navigated right to the front door of my sat nav journey but the biggest majority of the time Google Maps Satellite navigation system takes me in the exact opposite direction of where I want to go , it also has really big difficulties in connecting to its source and I find that I’m either being told to turn either ahead of actual turning point too soon or too late and then have to perform a complicated u turn on a really busy road , Google Maps is also very very guilty of taking you a longer route to the desired destination , and Google Maps always has me turning up and down streets on to roads of on coming traffic as it’s clueless to any of the one way systems in GLASGOW’s city Centers . I fell that Google Maps Satellite Navigation free app is not being updated or monitored enough and it’s just a matter of time before seriously injuring someone or killing them as road traffic is dangerous enough without an inaccurate liability thrown in to the mix of Glasgow towns busy road systems.
More Google Imaging

Good evening, currently the company I work for at are doing full 360 tours within one of Britain’s largest retailers. I was emailing to enquire whether we could set up a meeting to discuss how our systems could work together I.e links on your maps so the public can look around the stores, properties to buy, land for sale and for other engineering aspects I.e it would help with various permits for access to roofs etc and so people can see various bits they can see clearly which are currently on google maps. We are also currently in the process of creating tours at various universities and schools which our clients are really keen to do for new pupils so they know what to expect and have a quick look around the campus so it won’t be so daunting on the first day which could also I think be linked to your system. If you would like to meet and discuss just so you can see what we currently do and maybe discuss what we could do to help you, with that would be great. Kind Regard Alice Harrison
My go to navigation app. But...
by Jonathan T on 2019/01/26 09:05
Google Maps is an amazing free app. It’s just about bang on for most destinations. Some recent upgrade I only noticed the other day, like UK speed camera warning. I’ve always found it pretty accurate for the most part but a bit slow to react. Like all NAV apps or devices, you need to check the screen because the directions aren’t always clear enough for some sections of road. I’ve found it very useful in London, but again you need to glance at the screen to be sure as sometimes the verbal instructions don’t come on. Just like any other technology, don’t just rely on it to know what’s best. Always check the route it’s suggested and make sure the vehicle you’re driving is suitable for these roads. I would like the functionality to drag the route away from the chose one, like you can on a computer. Handheld devices are more powerful than computers if not so many years ago, so this functionality should be possible. Well done Google on a brilliant free app.
Amazing app but
by DannyTaylorUK on 2017/11/03 05:38
There is no doubt in my mind that when it comes to navigation apps, the mapping by google maps is way ahead of the competition however a couple of things I feel let the app down and make it feel out of date when comparing to the app to its competitors. Speed limits, with both Waze and Apple maps showing speed limits I feel this is a very useful feature that google maps is missing. The second feature I feel that is missing is when in comes to navigating roundabouts. Again when using waze or Apple maps you get a text indication showing which exit to take where as with google maps you will only get this indication verbally. Despite these two flaws, google maps is my go to navigation app and I do believe that the actually accuracy of the turn by turn navigation is 100x better than the competition and it’s this reason why google maps gets my vote
Something has gone wrong.
by Tgt1977 on 2018/11/02 17:54
I use google maps on most journeys, even routes I know well as I like to know the ETA. Recently when I tell it to take me home, using my saved locations, its shows my home on the map, I tell it to start guidance and then it picks a random point on the map and starts directing me there. The other day for my 15min drive home it wanted to take me to central London, which is two hours away. Today it got me most of the way home before telling me to take a turning I don’t usually take, I followed it as I assumed it was because of some blockage ahead. By the time I worked out it was taking me to another random point on the map, I had driven for the 20 minutes estimated to get home only for me to discover I had been guided to a town half an hour from home. This is an unacceptable glitch which could be considered dangerous, if panicked drivers try to make alterations whilst driving. Please sort this bug out.
Worst navigation ever
by Xenia1125 on 2018/11/19 06:52
Not just that it doesn’t show all the bigger routes that can be useable but don’t shows alternatives when you find yourself in front of a road close. Stopped at a petrol station, and after it’s just changed the way and instead to take me home after a 200 miles drive it took me around the town from the other side of the city. Also why the hell does the map starts to rolling around at a junction of the motorway, out of the town, on a difficult road just because the blue line that shows where you have to go crossing itself, so you are not jus unable to see the route properly but also have to improvise until it starts to work again and it gives you 10 minutes extra to your travel time. Getting frozen and turns around just without any reason and shows you going to the wrong way When you have to leave from a crossroads it’s freeze and not telling to turn to the right or to the left, but obviously you can’t wait until it’s fixed because cars behind you, so you turn into a road and than you will se that’s the wrong way so have to drive again extra time When you need to move from a destination to another that’s actually like 200 yard behind you in a different street, this app not going to offer you to turn around but gonna drive you all around and drop you nearly where you just have been It’s a terrible terrible app and caused me tons of stress while I was driving and I’m not going to use it anymore
Sometimes overcomplicating it
by Kicsi csibe on 2019/01/17 19:15
This is the best map app so I use it the most. However sometimes routes me on a longer and more expensive ways to my destination than I would do so I need to evaluate the suggestion. For example: going to Heathrow airport terminal from Clapham Junction (London, England) it suggested to change from bus 285 to Piccadilly line for the last stop. Which would have been not much time gain but hassle to get off the bus and onto the tube and pay and more time for the tube. So needless to say it stayed on the bus. Another time the maps tries to route me through park where cycling is not permitted or the park is already closed for the evening. In these cases it's not simple for me to give feedback there and then. So some button would be nice in one corner of the map to give feedback on these inaccuracies of the map.
Version 4.38
by Foggy headlight on 2017/11/03 12:10
Please remove everything added to this update back to how the previous version was. This new "preview" element is the most useless thing ever. I don't want to "preview" I want to "Go". You are not able to use multi stop function any longer, only in preview mode which is terrible. The screen times out alongside iPhone screensaver rather than being on all the time whilst in the app like previously. The map has stopped automatically moving when your own gps point has moved and you have to manually move yourself (very dangerous if you're driving). It is hard to get it out of compass direction and to follow your own direction automatically. It has removed the ability to see arrival time has been removed, the distance and time to destination doesn't show in preview mode, the distance countdown to the next turn etc has been removed. I would like to navigate to multiple points, not preview them. Please change this!
Problems with car play.
by Juneyse on 2018/10/07 09:38
Hi google. Hope you see this. Got a few problems with google maps on car play. When I’m navigating using google maps, if I get a txt come through my car play will read the txt and then the screen goes back to google maps....but the navigation has stopped. I have to come out of maps and then back in, then suddenly the nav is working again. Also, if I use Siri to do something...let’s say set a reminder for myself. If I’m using google maps, after using Siri, it goes back to google maps (where nav has stopped again!)then goes back to the home screen. I then have to start the nav all over again. This is just two things, my friends are having same issues plus other issues. I know google maps is new to car play, so hopefully things will get sorted soon.
Weird stuff creeping in
by Charlie merrell on 2018/07/06 18:06
I used to rely 100% on Google Maps but recently it seems to have become far less reliable. I’ve just been on a journey where I selected the optional route and pressed start and ended up on the default route anyway. Last week, the app took me off the motorway (leave at exit xyz) routed me next to the motorway (that was flowing freely) for 3 or 4 miles then put me back on. It then only flagged my junction when I was level with it so I missed it, then the alternative route that it said had a 4 minute delay, added 30 minutes to my journey despite me only being 3 minutes from the hold-up. My kids have started to make the same comments. Has something changed? Or has Apple done something now that they are finally trying to develop a decent map? I might be trying other apps anywayz
Google maps running behind other navigation maps
by Optional1379 on 2019/01/27 00:14
After all these years still no speed limit, also you need to ad more alternative route options so the driver can choose between rounds and not have the only route option by google, this used to be better with previous versions and I find it’s just got worse with updates, Google’s route option not always the best option. Also another thing to note is when music is playing google will mute the music completely for directions instead of heaving the option to just fade it like TomTom navigation which allows you to set the voice instructions as a percentage of the music volume, doesn’t need to be completely muted it’s just annoying. Common google sort it out, common sense here. For this reason you get 3* from me.
Why can’t Google maps get my address PIN on the map correct?
by percylongprong on 2018/05/17 04:56
Google maps cannot even place my address so any directions are wrong. I have asked them for years and they show a photo of a block of flats an d say this is my house!!! They insist my house position is 741 London Road. There is no such number (I believe as this was demolished years ago) and this land in Brambleside corner of Hammersley road is now Latter Day Saints church!!! Every now and then for 30+ years I have told them. The google map car came down Brambleside Cul de Sac and took photos of Broderick House, a block of flats like the other 6 Blocks all with numbers 1 to 6 on the name plate and made that my house. Visitors that come to see me I have to give the postcode of HP11 1LE which is a block of flats. Come on Google I will be dead soon Speak to me via email/phone and ask where you are going wrong..I want to give a minus one star but YOU have already placed a ONE star which I cannot remove.. One of the most useful apps you can download. But ugly app icon...
by RyanNappi on 2019/01/27 22:24
I use this app every single day. Not just for navigation but for finding local services, planning trips in advance, finding hotels and restaurants, Reading reviews, writing reviews and the list goes on. Google Maps is in that small group of apps that are irreplaceable and truly make our lives easier. The only thing I’d change is the app icon itself. Google’s other app icons are so simple and clean. I know Maps is a whole business unit in itself and is a very big deal within Google... but the red pin on a white background would be a confident and understated way to design the icon.
Bug in the system?
by bigdaddi67 on 2017/12/23 09:06
Never ever had a problem till last night. Map kept telling me to go off the main road and choose a parallel road and every time, it ended up as a dead end? It was late at night and foggy so couldn’t see the dead ends till I drove a little. One route even wanted me to drive through, not around, a public park! I was met with a closed gate given the late hour! Not sure why this happened as you’ve always been reliable but when I used another 3rd party map service, the ETA dropped by almost 10 mins for a 4 mile journey. I can imagine it was the ‘short cuts’ it was suggesting but none planned out. One even suggested driving down an alleyway behind a row of houses. I know you collect data from Maps as I can see a lot of info is recorded in the background. If you need more of my details to investigate the route I took yesterday, happy to provide if that helps.
Penalty charge
by zingo UK on 2018/12/04 16:10
Dear google map I love your app it’s very useful and has helped me almost every day however I have just received a penalty charge for £60 from Manchester City council because I was driving in Manchester City centre as I needed to pick up my Girlfriend from national express bus station on Portland street as I was following the directions from your map not knowing that it’s only for buses not cars , could please update places like that or use a different route for car drivers like me on places like these to avoid the penalty charges , I would like to thank you in advance if you could do that so we do not have to go through the same problem again as I was directed to go through that route .
Great but not perfect.
by John Soton on 2019/01/18 16:47
I’ve been using Google Maps for some time and this has been made much smoother and enjoyable using it with CarPlay. There is room for improvement by including the speed limits when mapping a route and the introduction of safety camera locations. Both of these features are available from Google’s other mapping product, WAZE, and it would appear fairly straightforward to include them in the far superior Google Maps. I can’t use Waze myself because it does not work properly with CarPlay in my VW Golf, so come on Google, finish this product properly.
Really disappointed
by Shulz4life on 2018/06/21 07:58
I have used google maps for years for getting around on public transport, and it’s been great. Now I drive it has somehow got a mind of its own. It doesn’t show the correct position when navigating, and can take up to 15 mins or more to corrrct itself. This is not great and very frustrating when you are driving around thinking you are on the wrong route when you have been on the right one all along. Also it doesn’t talk and give directions like it should do!!! I’ve set it up to do that. I don’t want to continuously have to look down at my phone because it’s not calling out the next instruction or any for that matter. I’ve updated my phone to the latest iOS and I’ve updated google maps. Sort it out please.
Great app but I have some issues
by BizzyB1995 on 2018/11/10 12:13
This app is great and I use it all the time. However I’ve had to start looking for a new app because there are a few things that have started to make it a pain: 1) why can’t I rename favourites? That way I could set up like an address book of places I go to often. 2) there is no speed limit icon. This would masked it far easier to be a safe driver and other apps have it so why not this one? 3) why can I either have no sound or 5 little bits of speech for every direction. Is there no in-between? Or an option to select what I want to hear? Or even just an option for a beep when I need to do something so I know to look at the screen.
Do you even deep link bro? 😂
by MrMike1989 on 2018/04/05 22:30
To give this app less than a 5 star review would be preposterous. I mean who are you trying to kid? Like you’re going to find a better satellite navigation app. Having said that, I didn’t actually come here to praise this app, that would be silly, they already know they’re the best. I would instead like to point out one thing that bugs me. Clicking on a Google maps link from safari does not open said location within the app. It just takes you to the App Store lol. I’ve no idea how they’ve messed that up. Quite embarrassing really.
Could do better
by jaguarstr on 2018/01/03 22:34
Reduced this to 2 stars. The new street view navigation is crap you go all over place totally unstable. Adding a way point is not what it seems and is fiddly. Really is not a way point adder at all Reducing to 1 star. Why the bloody hell don't stop fixing things that are not broke. Drop a pin now and you get half the map took up with information at the bottom we don't want. The little street view window was enuf what the hell is the matter with you people. While in my estimation this app is starting to fail. You can get camera info and road speeds by using Waze a sister app of google. However I do think google should look at incorporating this information. If I could give this no stars I would. The one thing that is annoying is when you use the feedback within the app nothing gets done. This app fails to load the street view on the iPad 10.5 pro. You have to try several times to make it load sometimes it works if you totally shut the app, but I known to have to turn iPad on and off. I have told google this several times over a period if a few months and they have not fixed it. This keeps crashing on the iPad 10.5" pro
Best map app, however...
by Rossy the Bossy on 2018/11/02 02:14
About time. This should never have been removed. However here in the UK the address of houses and companies are not very accurate. I would say 85% of places I search for are approx 0.5 to 1 mile from where they are exactly located. For example it says my house is at the other end of our street. Looking for a shop etc it will be half a mile to a mile further up the road than where it is. UPDATE The satnav is excellent and gives good guidance, however it doesn’t know road closures at all. Major bridge closed in one direction, Apple Maps, TomTom know about it but not Google. Speed camera and accurate road closure, speed limits would make this the clear winner.
Google maps has never let me down
by Pedderz... on 2018/02/11 00:50
I’m a person that needs maps to get from A to B regular. Sometimes the road I need becomes a track to the house I might be trying to reach. Even though it might be three quarters of a mile away from the main road it’ll still tell me the exact road I need to be on and it’ll take me all the way to the property I wanna reach. Brilliant five stars. Just please google if you’re going to do an update please don’t give up the the basic version of this app or it’ll spoil it. Please if it’s not broke please don’t try to fix it.
New version a bit temperamental. Could be IOS issue
by ShogunSQ on 2018/03/15 21:19
I had a previous version of google maps on my old iPhone 6 Plus. I did not update IOS software or update google maps app and it all worked seamlessly. I then “upgraded” to a iPhone 6S Plus abc has the latest IOS software pre-installed and had to upgrade to latest version of google maps and it became very temperamental. The location arrow was very erratic, no voice guidance, the arrow would not keep up with the car etc. I had to play about with the phone settings and delete and reload google maps....it seems to be working for now. I still think its the most intuitive and accurate sat nav app.
Good for cars and walking but..
by b2uty5 on 2017/11/27 02:26
I use Google Maps almost every day. It’s always great when I’m in a car, but I’ve recently moved to Europe, where public transpo is more common.. While it’s also good for walking and finding when a bus may arrive at a bus stop, sometimes I simply want to be on the bus and find out what time I’ll arrive at my stop. Instead, Google Maps will assume I’m walking or trying to get where I’m going and give me alternate routes, instead of already being headed to where I want to be. Trying to figure out the next leg of your journey can certainly be important, and you can’t always use data constantly and have the app & route open.
New update 4.38
by lez avvit on 2017/10/25 19:27
I’m getting annoyed with you “ improving” this app . Loved the (add stop ) feature but seems to be missing in the new update ! Very frustrating! Also google messed this great app up when they/you did that thing where when you get to within reach of the destination the screen freaks out and goes into different screen and is hard to figure out where the destination is without severe concentration which is dangerous while driving! Apart from that great app and don’t use anything else so if google can sort these two things will be great app again . Tried to find a way of contacting you directly but couldn’t so that’s why the rubbish review !

by Mahaythilay on 2017/10/26 21:02
The most useful application on my phone. I only want to suggest is if I want to drive exactly the same as the bus route and do not want to drive on the recommended car driving routes, I have no idea how to customise or change my driving route to be the same with public transport route. Why is I learn the streets going by bus first and I want to drive on those streets avoiding the dual carriageway and motorways as I am a new driver. After learning by bus, I want to go on that route by my car. However, google map cannot change that public transport route as car driving route for me. Apart from the that, ok for me.
New update keeps crashing my whole phone! (7+250gb)
by london_england on 2017/12/20 09:09
New update keeps crashing my whole phone! I’m a taxi driver in London, I do 1000 miles plus a week, I’ve started using religiously, however since new update if using the navigation feature and I come off the app soon as I go back in it freezes, I can’t come out of the app nor even know the correct way then my whole phone freezes, even starts blinking and making distorting sounds. My phone is up to date and no other apps causing problems or freezing phone. Google please please please fix ASAP, apart from not being able to organise favourites and sometimes not knowing banned right/left turns excellent and much better than tomtom and waze. Please sort out ASAP starting to cost me money 😩😩😩😩😩

Having used google maps for satnav while driving around the UK has been great .. Google maps come into its own when travelling around Europe ... having used the maps to not only guide me around walking in the city sightseeing... the transit maps for the trains and U-Bahns along with times and station details made getting around so much easier than having to keep looking for assistance... this app has revolutionised my world and feel more confident to travel even more knowing google maps has my back ! 🤘🏼
Has it's own mind
by BinaPleasure on 2017/11/28 13:00
Good free app, but sometimes it has a mind of its own. Changes to satellite view sometimes, super difficult to use navigation on this setting. There have been a few times the app has randomly changed my route without warning, very disorienting. There have also been several times maps has taken me near my destination, but not directly to it. Last night it directed me to the Wicks store near the petrol station I wanted to get to. This wouldn't have been so much of an issue except there was a 15ft bank of grass seperating me and the station. I had to trial and error the connecting car parks to get to the actual station.
Used to be 5 star! - and now it is again!
by Chocca666 on 2018/02/25 08:27
Following my review (below) I followed Google’s suggestion and restarted my phone. The App is back to being the best of its kind. Quick and accurate, does exactly what it says on the tin! Dunno what’s happened but after the latest update my iPhone 7 does seem to like this app. Can find destination, it loads the route but I can’t start the navigation for 15-20 seconds. I know it’s hardly a long length of time, but it used to be instant - and these days that’s expected!
Freezes after latest IOS Update
by YemStar007 on 2017/10/07 09:40
This would be a 5 star because I prefer to even Apple map and sat nav unfortunately after the latest update keep freezing. I know this just need little tweaking because of the latest update but most developers have updated their app even before the iOS release, surprised why this happened with google. It’s a pain when you driving and it freezes on you because you have relied on it even more than your sat nav. I love the real time traffic update, if you can also include speed limit & speed cameras.
Strengths and weaknesses
by FizzyWhizzyPapa on 2018/05/21 16:39
Great free Sat Nav tool if you use it that way. You can see traffic hotspots and instructions are well thought out to be clear and unambiguous. Sadly no way to alter a route slightly. Can add stopping points but Google Maps doesn’t then work out a shortcut back to your main route but makes you double back the way you came and then back to the main route. A long about ! So close to being the only map and navigation tool you need. Come on Google with a tiny bit of extra effort you could easily outclass all the other offerings free or chargeable !!!
Explore / Commute
by sonnofjack on 2018/11/13 17:48
Used to be my preferred navigation App for commuting by car, but since the latest update I’ve found the new Explore / Commute options to be entirely frustrating. I don’t want to see what’s around me on Explore (which is now the default) and the Commute function is just dreadful. The silly peak times graph is so big it takes up half the screen relegating the map to a tiny little window at the top. What was wrong with the Explore / Driving / Transit options previously presented at the bottom of the App? They worked so much better. I can’t understand why that layout needed changing? At least provide a way of changing the default view to Commute so we don’t have to see Explore every time we launch the App?
Speed Limits! Police Speed Cameras!
by Speedfire12 on 2018/02/16 01:36
This app is amazing! It is really fast and gives you a lot of information about what’s around you, restaurants, coffee shops, gas station and etc. However if riding like my self I would like to know the speed limits of every street, because sometimes there aren’t as many signs and it gets confusing. Adding the feature to know if you are going the speed limit is essential to avoid any speeding tickets. Also a feature that allows us the road users to know where speed cameras are will make us slow down.
My go-to when walking from A-B
by meesh-ll on 2018/09/05 05:58
I rely on google maps a lot for walking around, mainly in central London but also when I go on city breaks, and overall it is a brilliant app that makes me feel like a local :) however what I would say is that sometimes you get directed on some routes which don’t feel safe when it’s late and you’re walking on your own, especially in an unfamiliar area. It would be great if you could suggest “Safe” or “Busy” routes which, whilst may take a bit longer, take you on a route down busier roads with more people around.
More colours needed
by Yeliab nevets on 2018/02/10 07:50
I find it difficult to comprehend, how someone can design an app that gives directions so well but highlights the route with a blue line and then uses the same colour blue dot to show your location. The fundamental floor here is at a glance, bearing in mind you are driving and concentrating on not banging your precious motor into anything, you can’t instantly see the dot to know where you are and it’s a dot, not an arrow showing the direction of travel. Google, when will you admit your design fault and change the dot to an arrow any other colour but blue? While your at it, how about adding more colours and shapes for saved places.
A good app gone wrong?
by Billtee on 2017/11/25 21:30
Google Maps are frequently used by me to find my way around Britain and the Continent, but the latest updates have ruined it quite a bit. Where once working your way along a road in Streetview was easy and intuitive, now it is clumsy and things frequently go awry. Once a user could just find an address easily, now we are ‘offered’ all sorts of things - hotels, restaurants, pubs etc which are not wanted or required. We have no option to turn off these ‘features’. Would I recommend this app to someone else? No, I would tell them to stay on Apple’s Maps app.
The best all round mapping app
by Chris hevey on 2018/12/05 12:18
I find the quality of the maps to be pretty good, although the colour contrast could be better. Streetview is extremely useful for many things, not least checking out a place before you go there. The biggest thing for me is the richness of pin data. This is particularly good as most of it is crowdsourced from the public who can add new things and edit mistakes. I’ve compared areas I know well with the other mainstream mapping apps and google wins hands-down
THANK YOU SO MUCH

My name is Joe, and I am visually Impaired. I moved into university a few days ago and I was very upset because I couldn’t read the signs or the maps, rendering my first few days at university very distressing, as I couldn’t get around without assistance. That is, until I discovered Google Maps, and I was showing tears of joy when I could explore the city and the campus independently, using Google Maps’ navigation tool to get around. I have never felt so good about myself. Thank you, Google ❤️
Good but could be improved
by 4 ever chelsea on 2018/07/31 10:33
This is a very good app and it has decreased my journeys by as much as 45 minutes however some aspects that could be improved on are sometimes the maps lag and it’s struggles to keep up with my car often causing me to take the wrong exit or go the wrong way and speed limits would be a nifty little feature as I use this feature quite a lot on apple maps due to having a black box if both these features get added/improved I will edit this review to 5 stars and delete Apple maps to use this as my default navigation app
Good, but not brilliant....

This app has a lot of plus points, but it also lacks those extra little touches like a safety camera add-on or known delays throughout the route not just what you can see on screen. And, as other users have pointed out, the navigational voice-over needs to be independent of any background soundtrack that may or may not be playing. This is a common feature in true satnav apps like Co-Pilot, etc. However, this app has come a long way in the last few years, but there is still a way to go before it can be relied upon fully to replace other more competent competitors.

Crashes when switching back to the app
by Tommy putt on 2018/01/26 08:37
When leaving the app temporarily and switching back to the app, it crashes every time without fail. Bit of a pain, especially if using as a hands free set while driving! But apart from this bug it’s usually flawless. Hoping for an update to fix this issue. I’m using an iPhone X on latest iOS and latest Google Maps version as of submitting this review. *edit: was fixed and back to its perfect state, cheers all!
Vastly superior to Apple's rubbish maps
by Danny in Fulham on 2017/10/24 01:25
I absolutely dislike using Apple supplied Maps on the iPhone. It seems that all train stations are exactly the same for Apple: a London underground station is seen to be no different from another overgroundstation or a national rail station. Google Maps actually show the distinction, and also show you in which direction you are walking. Do you think Apple could learn something from this? Yes! Will they? Not a chance! The company is arrogant and impervious learning anything. So, switch to Google Maps.
Love the app but Custom route on commute is broken
by James_Swindon on 2019/01/22 23:49
My commute to work is a combination of walking to the train station and then at the other end, walking to work. When the commute option came out a few releases back, it was great as I could set my home and work train station and it would calculate time & distances for both outbound and return journeys. Then the route to work just stopped working, it removed my custom route. No idea why and the work to home custom route which was identical (except in reverse) is fine. If I let Google choose my best route or select one of the defined routes it also works. However none of these routes are what I actually travel. I signed out of Google and deleted and reinstalled the app but no luck. I sent feedback to Google via the app twice but no reply. So no idea if the developers are even aware. Frustrating really considering it worked fine at the beginning. Apart from that I love the app.
Good but some major flaws
by Bru9 on 2018/07/01 16:02
Generally a good navigation app and I’ve used it consistently over the last four years. However three major areas which I’ve noted as room for improvement. FASTER / ALTERNATIVE ROUTE- the app does not take into consideration additional distance when formulating an alternative route. For instance, the App recently tried to divert me to save 8minutes on my journey time but added an additional 35 MILES. This is not acceptable or fuel efficient. The App should make any additional distance clear when offering the alternative route. COMPLICATED/ DELAYED INSTRUCTIONS - the app sometimes can give a series of instructions in a very short space of time and sometimes these are inaccurate. The App often corrects these mistakes quickly but I believe this to be dangerous as can panic a driver. INDEPENDENT VOLUME CONTROLS. I listen to my music moderately loudly on road trips however when the voice instructions come in over the music, it can be deafening.

Annoyed
by Igpfo5 on 2019/02/13 14:26
Google maps has been great for my previous use but since January it’s been the most unreliable map app ever rabidly placing my location no where near where I am and not following the car when driving making it impossible to use!

Please fix

Great
by Havid9488 on 2019/02/10 18:39
Google maps is great.

My maps not working

Since the latest update My Maps doesn’t draw your map. It zooms to the correct area but doesn’t draw the map. As this was the main thing I used it for the App is of no use to me anymore. Hope it gets fixed promptly. I would have thought fairly rudimentary testing would have highlighted this issue!

My Maps loaded without placemarks!
by Przemek123456789 on 2019/01/31 14:36
From last update 31.Jan opening any map from My Maps, won't give you any result. Loaded map do not show any placemark. I was using this googlemap feature for my work and now it is all gone. Thanks google! Please fix it!!!
Another great but beware!!!

It would be better if the google maps adds speed limits and speedometer like it does with waze maps!

Amazing but no speed info.
by Swapy007 on 2019/01/30 23:58
Google developers please put speed limit info for the current street on maps. It’s really helpful like apple maps have it . We would like to see google with speed limit info. Thanks

I’ve compared areas I know well with the other mainstream mapping apps and google wins hands-down
THANK YOU SO MUCH
by Joe Redford on 2017/09/21 22:13
My name is Joe, and I am visually Impaired.
Good, but not brilliant....
by sloughsteve27 on 2018/01/06 18:42
This app has a lot of plus points, but it also lacks those extra little touches like a safety camera add-on or known delays throughout the route not just what you can see on screen.
