Latest update has broken the switch between workouts on madcow. I didn’t pay for premium to be constantly bombarded with bugs and issues. Clearly the developer doesn’t text updates fully before releasing. There’s better, more stable workout apps out there. Give it a try but buyer beware on upgrading

I’ve been using 5x5 on and off since early 2018 and have had great results (squat increased from 70kg to 175kg in about 18months) this app is constantly improving. This current edition tho seems to have a couple of minor bugs. Some of the weights calculations (mainly on the supplementary movements) seem a little erratic. Like dips are suggesting I add 100+ kg even tho my top recorded weight is around the 10kg mark. Definitely worth the money especially if you’re a newbie

Perfect app. Everything you need is included. Purchased elements enhance an already supreme app. Fingers are crossed that they keep adding other workouts like 5/3/1 etc so you can stay with the app longer and longer as you progress!

I think this is the best executed workout app I have used. I like the way it ups the challenge each time I go to the gym and I’m definitely feeling the benefit of the program I live the Apple Watch integration- it’s great to do everything just on the watch However, there is in annoying niggle. I sync the workout to health and exercise but the app on the Apple Watch doesn’t quit on finish and it wipes out the subsequent outdoor cycle workout for my cycle home This has happened several times now so I have stopped the health integration. I’m hoping a software update will fix this glitch in an otherwise perfect app

I used this app in 2017 before I let the beer gut catch me again and I got into the best condition I’d ever been in. Don’t digress from what it says and you’ll have an easy life getting where you want to be, without the cross-fire of everyone’s “expert” opinion.

Makes keeping track of training easy, like the timer too. I think the programme starts a little bit light after entering initial 1RM but I just manually entered the actual weight lifted on my first workout. Awesome app 5 stars!

I’ve been following the 5x5 programme for a little over ten years and this app is by far the greatest thing that happened to Mehdi’s program. No more writing things down in jotters or tracking timers with stop watches. This really is the simplest and best.
Unable to install - keeps crashing

I was really looking forward to downloading this given the reviews, but couldn’t get past the registration screen before the app crashed. Tried deleting and re-installing at least 10 times, updating iOS, turning the phone off and on to no avail. I hope the developers can fix this… Developer responded within 1 day - app working superbly. Looks amazing.

I love it and use it very often but there are too many bugs and it’s recently crashed every time I tried to finish a workout. Luckily I found I could delete the workout entirely.

The free app is good and worth using alone. Upgrading to premium is worth the money as you can upload and track your personal Workouts. It also deloads weights what is useful post lockdowns.

After 2 years of using stronglifts 5x5 on and off I can see why 5x5 is so popular, it’s simple and it works**. As volume increases I recommend a deload every 2 months where you drop all your new level of weight in half and start again with the progressive overload. Free** Easy to use** 5/5

I have taken up weight training in my 60’s to maintain health and strength - I find the StrongLifts app very motivating including when I missed a couple of weeks due to mild illness when the app automatically de-loaded to help me get back into it. I find the web pages very helpful for developing good “form”. Recommended for anyone my age taking up resistance training - try it, you won’t regret it!

have used this app from 2018 and the workout A/B split was a great program for a beginner. packed on quite a bit of muscle. the new updates are even better allowing you to customize multiple workouts for a 4/5/6 day split with an extensive list of exercises.

I wanted to try out the Madcow 5x5 workout. To do so I needed to start the subscription. After I paid, I clicked the new workout and got the message ‘Coming soon’. Hate this shady sort of stuff! Tell me upfront if its coming soon before I pay money.

Big fan of StrongLifts. The app is super easy to use, and offers a really easy to follow workout plan focusing on compound lifts. The app offers good, readily accessible data feedback in terms of workout history, and is presented really well. Added bonus, not too much is hidden behind a paywall so get the sense the owners care about improving people’s training, not just making a quick buck. Certainly this is one of the better fitness apps out there.

I use Winter for weight training, and I used to just lift weights doing lots of reps and swapping routines around as I fancied it. I thought I was making progress, but felt I might be missing something. A good Google session led me to this app, and within a few days I was happy to pay for the pro subscription. So easy to use, lots of customisations to suit, and it actually works. I can see and feel the difference. Started from the lowest weight, to get the right techniques, and now progressing with every session. What’s best is that I don’t have to think. Life is too busy, too stressful, and too mentally demanding on me - but with this app I can train, switch off following simple instructions, and see results. Dev / Owner is super responsive to requests too. Overall a brilliant app for building strength and muscle.

I used this app for around 7 months. I used the paid version for most of that time, I liked the additional exercises and the plate calculator. I stopped using the app when I moved on to an intermediate program. I’m back on it again to build up after lockdown , but I’m only using the free as I can do the plate maths in my head and I don’t need accessory exercises. You make good progress with this plan and it’s easy to follow, you just need to get to the rack 3 times per week.

First off great app, always has been. Some issues I want to bring up are that my days often have a 2 day gap and I can’t change them in advance, I need to do the most recent workout first before I can change them. Second of all my deadlift only goes up in 2.5, and again I can only change it until it’s the most recent workout

Solid App for developing Strength

This is an app I have come back to time and again over the past few years. It provides a tried and tested, easy to follow program which I have found to provide great results, particularly as a novice strength trainer or are returning to strength training following a break or, as in my case, an injury. I have always found this app easy to navigate and the program easy to follow. I would certainly recommend this app to someone looking to start strength training. The only downside that I have found, is that after improving up to a certain point, it is possible to fall into a cycle of reaching a certain weight, failing to complete the required sets so dropping the weight back down, only to fail again on the way up. All in all an excellent program, although it may have its limitations as you become a more advanced trainer.

It’s soooo easy too use and honestly makes me focus more on what I’m doing I’ve suffered with adhd and I sometimes go off and do other things and not know what I’m doing and rest too long this app you let it know once the set is done and has a timer on it! Really handy and great app.
Constantly nags me to upgrade

The app itself is quite good - very simple, no frills, and this is probably a good thing. However! I have been paying user of the app since 2015, when there wasn’t a subscription model, only a one-off “power pack” upgrade, which I bought. Since returning to the app this year, the app CONSTANTLY nags me with pop ups and ads inside the workout screens to pay a monthly subscription. This “offer” should not invade my screen after I’ve turned it down the first time. It’s obvious where to upgrade if I want to. Thumbs down for abusing the goodwill of your long time paying users.

This was a good app. So good I paid for it. But every so often the developers get greedier and add another tier that you have to pay to escape. Now getting nagged to pay another “lifetime fee” every set. Good app ruined by greed. Suggest you try “Strong” which is almost as good and nowhere near as greedy.

One of the best programs on the market. Had a few set backs like spinal stenosis,4 heart attack’s 5 strokes last one 22nd OCTOBER BUT who is counting went to 2014 london seminar. Have been keeping my hand in.

I bought the power pack few years , thinking that I will keep access to all features for the coming years . But recently when I started going back to gym , observed that there is pro pack . weird you’re never gonna get the lifetime access to this app. Forget it . They are after making money . Thanks Mehdi.
App doesn’t work as described

You can’t add extra workouts. Try to add a C workout, change the exercises to what you want, great. Then go back in and it resets that workout to the default exercises. It also then adds two C workouts. I spent over an hour trying to get it to work, it doesn’t work.

It’s a decent little app which is clean and great for beginners to learn the basics at the gym. I’ve been using since 2016 and paid for the power pack in 2017. My issue is the fact the app hasn’t really evolved and features that has been added require very expensive pricing and additional pricing. This is despite the fact I’ve already paid for it - feels like a punch in the face to be honest. I paid to support the app like I would with a free PlayStation or PC game, I don’t expect to continue paying for each little new feature! My advice, use it for free and don’t bother paying for the extras. I’ll be deleting and using a different app where I can edit my workouts.

For a seasoned weightlifter, this is perfect if you’re looking for strength training to add on to a sports schedule. I really see gains quicker than any other program. The fact it does the calculations and planning for you is excellent.

This is a great program & easy to use app. I’d fallen out of love with strength training but this was nice & easy to follow and the workouts at the beginning were quick & easy. It gets harder before you know it, but by that time you’ve got a good habit going & start to see the gains.

Let me start by saying if you are unsure on whether or not to get this app, get it. It is so easy to use, rigorous and gives a near complete training program for both beginners and intermediates. The program is designed to stick to compound lifts are target major muscle groups. The subscription is fully worth purchasing, and gives a simple guide to how to warm up and the ability to add on additional isolation exercises at the end. Additionally if you do not have time for 5x5 or it becomes too taxing, you have the option to switch to 3x5. My only complaint is that you cannot edit the core exercises for each workout. Now there is a good reason for this, as it ensures that you stick to the system (which I recommend) for the best results. However, individuals who suffer from conditions prohibiting them from certain lifts (such as supraspinatus tendinitis, which produces pain with barbell press), are unable to replace these exercises with a suitable alternative (such as standing/seated dumbbell press in the above case). Whilst the muscles targeted may not be identical, I personally believe that this app should give the freedom to allow edits. That’s just a thought, and I do hope one day such an option will be offered to subscribed users.
Helped me a huge amount with lifting

I have had a few periods on and off with lifting, trying to get into it and make progress, but I always suffered from a lack of direction, idea of what weights to lift, and generally had a lack of progress. However, after only using this app for 8 weeks, I have made huge progress and increased all my lifts by 50%. In 8 weeks I have gone from having not used the gym for months, to probably being in the best shape of my life, and being motivated to go to the gym 3-4 times a week because I see good progress each time. The app is fantastic, easy to use and you can use their website to find detailed description of form etc. Would 100% recommend this app.

I downloaded this app based on the overwhelming positive feedback on here, I wanted to try something different to encourage my muscles to grow...I’m one of those pesky hard gainers, so after not seeing as much improvement as I’d like I went searching for a new plan. I’ve been doing this 3 days a week for several weeks now. I’m squatting way more weight than before, but because of the low rep ranges it never feels like a challenge. I never feel like I’ve had a serious workout and I’ve actually been losing muscle since I started doing this. Having said that, the app is very easy to use, the graphs are great for tracking your progress. Just obviously wasn’t for me, I still class myself as a beginner, but this is really basic with no muscle gains in sight, so maybe better for your first plan, not one to switch to if you’ve already been doing something else as you’ll find yourself going backwards.

I was a bit dubious about the app after trying so many, however to my surprise both me & my girlfriend are really enjoying the simplicity, constant change between the two workouts and most of all the results 😁 The graphs tracking your increases are really motivating especially looking back monthly & thinking “Wow, I’ve actually got stronger really quickly” Also, since the workouts don’t take forever, we’ve been able to add in cardio or isolation on alternative days as a supplement for a quick 10-15 mins which make each workout feel different whilst keeping the foundation exercises - Love it! 💪🏽

Great app for the beginner or the crusty old lifter like me. I have been training with weights for over 30 years, for the last couple of years this has been my favourite app. It’s also a great go to training app for those who don’t want to waste any time in the gym. Weight training isn’t my only or main sport I just use it to stay strong, in shape and help with my other activities. If it’s your only thing then you probably want something more comprehensive. But for me it’s perfect.

Great app for the gym, an I've been using it for a while now. It would be nice if there was a screen where you could see your current personal bests for each of each exercise! Unfortunately this is almost unusable for me now, the phone app constantly freezes so I literally can’t do anything in the app. If I use the watch app, this works fine until I either finish the workout, because it wants the app open on the phone, which freezes so it doesn’t sync. Or, on the rare occasion that the phone app works, it resets the workout on the watch. Infuriating! Please fix this, as this was always my go to workout app.

I started using the app and following the programme about 6 weeks ago and I can already see and feel the effect. I can focus on simple exercises and challenge myself a little bit more every time I train. I’m the kind of skinny guy who has tried for years to gain some mass and this programme (along with changes in my diet) have showed me that consistency and discipline is key. I’ve paid for pro membership now so I’m really looking forward to the updates and new developments. For now, I can totally recommend it.

This app is great! I love the simplicity of it, I think it reflects the training plan perfectly. I like that I don’t have to calculate how much weight I need to add to progress it’s done automatically! Just roll up to the gym and train without having to fiddle about going through multiple menus to change sets and reps. The only grip I have is when you’ve done your set and tapped in you’re reps a rest timer pops up at the bottom which is handy but is hard to close when you’re rest time is up which leaves you tapping the phone like a madman, haha. Other than that this app is flawless! 👌

Brilliant app helps you track your progress love it gone from squatting around 35kg nearly squatting 60 kg in about 3 weeks brilliant for strength my advice work your way up gradually works better that way I also stop doing this for about a year tried other workouts and got nowhere I’ve just started back and in the process of purchasing a squat rack so I’m only doing the bench press and deadlift and row but you can’t get to your full potential unless you squat no other exercise comes close for gains

This is an app I have come back to time and again over the past few years. It provides a tried and tested, easy to follow program which I have found to provide great results, particularly as a novice strength trainer or are returning to strength training following a break or, as in my case, an injury. I have always found this app easy to navigate and the program easy to follow. I would certainly recommend this app to someone looking to start strength training. The only downside that I have found, is that after improving up to a certain point, it is possible to fall into a cycle of reaching a certain weight, failing to complete the required sets so dropping the weight back down, only to fail again on the way up. All in all an excellent program, although it may have its limitations as you become a more advanced trainer.

Would have marked this down as I do not like to be asked to review apps however so far I can’t really fault it. It’s clear, video instructions are clear, I only need one piece of gym equipment so can monopolise that without having to try to get to the next bit of equipment when gym is busy, has a countdown timer that keeps going and banners when it’s time to do next set even when you’re in other apps. It will take time to see what the results are but so far it’s all good.

Big fan of StrongLifts. The app is super easy to use, and offers a really easy to follow workout plan focusing on compound lifts. The app offers good, readily accessible data feedback in terms of workout history, and is presented really well. Added bonus, not too much is hidden behind a paywall so get the sense the owners care about improving people’s training, not just making a quick buck. Certainly this is one of the better fitness apps out there.

I’ve been using 5x5 on and off since early 2018 and have had great results (squat increased from 70kg to 175kg in about 18months) this app is constantly improving. This current edition tho seems to have a couple of minor bugs. Some of the weights calculations (mainly on the supplementary movements) seem a little erratic. Like dips are suggesting I add 100+ kg even tho my top recorded weight is around the 10kg mark. Definitely worth the money especially if you’re a newbie

I’ve been training ~15 years in all types of ways. There are many effective ways of getting in shape, being stronger, being faster etc but the simplest way is 5x5. This is my foundation to all my training, and should serve as a foundation to all whether you’re a beginner or seasoned pro. Pay for the app too, show support, unlock the features and don’t waste your time on complexity. Strong is happy - enjoy

I used this app for around 7 months. I used the paid version for most of that time, I liked the additional exercises and the plate calculator. I stopped using the app when I moved on to an intermediate program. I’m back on it again to build up after lockdown , but I’m only using the free as I can do the plate maths in my head and I don’t need accessory exercises. You make good progress with this plan and it’s easy to follow, you just need to get to the rack 3 times per week.
Unable to install - keeps crashing

I was really looking forward to downloading this given the reviews, but couldn’t get past the registration screen before the app crashed. Tried deleting and re-installing at least 10 times, updating iOS, turning the phone off and on to no avail. I hope the developers can fix this… Developer responded within 1 day - app working superbly. Looks amazing.

So bloody obvious and easy to use. How many times before getting this app was I unsure of how many sets I had done and what rest I had taken or forgot to enter last weeks weight increase . The simplest things are often the best. Brilliant results as you would expect if you religiously followed any program. But we don’t because they are to annoyingly complicated and involve so many weight changes mid session.

First off great app, always has been. Some issues I want to bring up are that my days often have a 2 day gap and I can’t change them in advance, I need to do the most recent workout first before I can change them. Second of all my deadlift only goes up in 2.5, and again I can only change it until it’s the most recent workout

I have taken up weight training in my 60’s to maintain health and strength - I find the StrongLifts app very motivating including when I missed a couple of weeks due to mild illness when the app automatically de-loaded to help me get back into it. I find the web pages very helpful for developing good “form”. Recommended for anyone my age taking up resistance training - try it, you won’t regret it!

It's been a long time since I logged into StrongLifts but started back tonight and I have to admit that I'm very impressed with how the app has improved (I updated prior to using it again)! Very slick user interface, literally fool-proof! I'm currently nursing a low back injury so it's ideal for my needs right now using vey light weights but able to be motivated to train and progress incrementally each session!

Good app and I’m happy to support SL5x5 but its not really possible to adapt this to other routines like greyskull, SS, or really anything else. That said it does work excellently for SL5x5, just you may have to buy a more flexible app in a year or so once you want to change program. To get the most out of it you should take the time to input your exact equipment. Worth the price just for the plate calculator though, and to support them as they're giving away a really good workout.

There’s not much else to say. Even after going through a plethora of other fitness apps, StrongLifts is the only one that does the job I need...despite not exactly being amongst the most aesthetic apps around. Only reason I won’t give it 5 stars is because of the lack of Apple Watch support. I’ve been waiting for this feature for a long time, and still it hasn’t arrived, which is disappointing.

At first this was 5 stars. Made some good progress and loved the app. The last few weeks however my progress has been disappearing regularly and I have lost 14 months worth of stats. I suspect this has to do with the new pro coming out, and so they don’t care about the power pack purchasers like me and so they let it glitch out. I now have to take pencil and pad to the gym with me and I end up using the app as a timer and set tick off. You can’t rely on it for any more than that sadly. Great start guys, poor finish. Unlikely to go ‘pro’ based on my last few weeks experience. Jon
Great structure for workouts

I bought a home gym setup last year and been using this app to help make sure I follow a structured workout. It’s great for tracking the weight you’re lifting (and making sure you increase it), counting sets and making sure you’re resting for the right amount of time between sets. Also if you miss a few workouts it will warn you and ask you if you want to reduce the weight.
Worst app on my phone

I have the latest iPhone X and this app performs terribly on it. There are delays of several seconds between touching a button and it reacting. This has the unfortunate effect of making you think nothing has happened , so you press it again and it registers two presses. So the wrong number of reps is recorded . Also, I tried to leave this review from the rating screen inside the app and it didn’t show up in the store so they are clearly filtering their one star reviews . The program itself has worked well for me but the app is the most frustrating one on my phone.

I love this app, I’m used to working out what % my warm up sets should be, when to deload etc. But this does it all for me, yes I paid for the upgrade, but it’s a one off payment and I thought it was worth it. If you don’t upgrade, the free version is still fab and does everything you need for your training sessions. And the timer...well, little things.

Nice and easy to use app, straight forward tracking of progress and takes you back a few steps after continued failed sets. Wish I had started out training with a routine like this years ago, instead of body building style routines. Not just for beginners though.

So I’ve got the free version of the app. It’s simplicity is it’s trump card. And, much like what Mehdi preaches, it’s not Bro Science, so if you miss a rep there’s not a whole load of crap about useless supplementary exercises/ taking powder etc.. You failed? So what! Come back and do it again. As it should be. All I’ll say is, if it’s this good free, God help us with how good the paid version is.

For years you’ve been saying there will be an Apple Watch app. When will this be? You have released multiple updates and the last even has dark mode, yet no sign of the watch app. I am fed up of waiting and paying a subscription to a different app developer because they have a watch app - even though your app is superior I still won’t use it at the gym without the watch app

I love how quick and straight forward the workouts are; very versatile for those that may have less time. My only issue is that you can’t put more than one workout on the same day but you can still complete workouts for other days. For example, I decided to do two workouts today as I had time and felt I could do it. Once completed, rather than put both my workouts today, it put the second workout on Thursday because that’s when I was ‘meant to do it’. Can you allow for more than more that one workout to be done on the same day but ‘advise’ that they’re not rather than restricting it?

After 2 years of using stronglifts 5x5 on and off I can see why 5x5 is so popular, it’s simple and it works**. As volume increases I recommend a deload every 2 months where you drop all your new level of weight in half and start again with the progressive overload. Free** Easy to use** 5/5

Very straightforward and great to get the form correct without breaking the energy and rep bank. Found the first level better to go for 5 days straight with the increments as directed, will carry on in 2nd week with 2 consecutive days Wednesday rest day then 3rd week Monday/Wednesday/Friday until at maximum ability. Great app and very easy to follow

have used this app from 2018 and the workout A/B split was a great program for a beginner. packed on quite a bit of muscle. the new updates are even better allowing you to customize multiple workouts for a 4/5/6 day split with an extensive list of exercises.

Been lifting for a while no real guidance and found out about the app through a fb weightlifting group. Oh my god this app is sooooo good. Will start you off a fair bit lighter than you’re used to but it soon builds back up and beyond to what your original PB. SERIOUSLY CANNOT recommend this app enough, wether your a beginner or Ben lifting a while this app will help.

I recently tried to re-download this app as I’d lost it. It was free when I downloaded it the first time, however when I tried to re download it, iTunes tried to charge me £7.99. I tried this several times as I was shocked that it was now a chargeable app and they tried to charge me several times too. Luckily my bank put a block on it so no payment was taken. Don’t get me wrong it is a great app when in the gym and for fitness but not worth £7.99. Disappointed i can’t re download this, I’ve downloaded JFit now which is free as it states.

This is a great program & easy to use app. I’d fallen out of love with strength training but this was nice & easy to follow and the workouts at the beginning were quick & easy. It gets harder before you know it, but by that time you’ve got a good habit going & start to see the gains.

I stumbled onto this after searching for an article to help give me some guidance on proving my gym sessions. The interface and direction of the app is fantastic and easy to follow and for me personally is a great way to ensure I’m progressing with my lifts instead of stalling, I would recommend it to anyone who is struggling to push that little bit further.
Buggy after the updates

This a great app, it’s got a nice simple UI and makes the lifting experience really simple, all you need to do is lift. Since the change in model though it’s become quite buggy, it often does not start at all or crashes on start up. I think this is down to excessive reliance on network calls because it works better at home than in the gym (who know a gym with a good network?).

I started using 5x5 when I moved to a new gym where the plans they provided and the expertise available wasn't up to what I had at my previous gym, which was run by two competitive lifters. This app has filled that void. Not only is the app very simple and easy to use, but it is accompanied by in depth emails containing questions and answers from Mehdi - the expert behind it all. It's worked well for me because it's progressional and automated. You simply turn up and it informs you of the set, reps and weights. Even the free version is good enough. For absolute beginners I would recommend the pro update for the added extras.

I’ve been following the 5x5 programme for a little over ten years and this app is by far the greatest thing that happened to Mehdi’s program. No more writing things down in jotters or tracking timers with stop watches. This really is the simplest and best.

Great app just one improvement on the body weight thing because every time I looked at my workout it said my body weight was 70 kg when it’s not also how do you remove certain exercises your not allowed to do

It’s a decent little app which is clean and great for beginners to learn the basics at the gym. I’ve been using since 2016 and paid for the power pack in 2017. My issue is the fact the app hasn’t really evolved and features that has been added require very expensive pricing and additional pricing. This is despite the fact I’ve already paid for it - feels like a punch in the face to be honest. I paid to support the app like I would with a free PlayStation or PC game, I don’t expect to continue paying for each little new feature! My advice, use it for free and don’t bother paying for the extras. I’ll be deleting and using a different app where I can edit my workouts.

Latest update has broken the switch between workouts on madcow. I didn’t pay for premium to be constantly bombarded with bugs and issues. Clearly the developer doesn’t text updates fully before releasing. There’s better, more stable workout apps out there. Give it a try but buyer beware on upgrading

I think this is the best executed workout app I have used. I like the way it ups the challenge each time I go to the gym and I’m definitely feeling the benefit of the program I live the Apple Watch integration- it’s great to do everything just on the watch However, there is in annoying niggle. I sync the workout to health and exercise but the app on the Apple Watch doesn’t quit on finish and it wipes out the subsequent outdoor cycle workout for my cycle home This has happened several times now so I have stopped the health integration. I’m hoping a software update will fix this glitch in an otherwise perfect app

Tried deleting and re-installing at least 10 times, updating iOS, turning the phone off and on to no avail. I have taken up weight training in my 60’s to maintain health and strength - I find the StrongLifts app very motivating including when I missed a couple of weeks due to mild illness when the app automatically de-loaded to help me get back into it. I find the web pages very helpful for developing good “form”. Recommended for anyone my age taking up resistance training - try it, you won’t regret it!

Big fan of StrongLifts. The app is super easy to use, and offers a really easy to follow workout plan focusing on compound lifts. The app offers good, readily accessible data feedback in terms of workout history, and is presented really well. I use Winter for weight training, and I used to just lift weights doing lots of reps and swapping routines around as I fancied it. I thought I was making progress, but felt I might be missing something. A good Google session led me to this app, and within a few days I was happy to pay for the pro subscription. So easy to use, lots of customisations to suit, and it actually works. I can see and feel the difference. Started from the lowest weight, to get the right techniques, and now progressing with every session. What’s best is that I don’t have to think. Life is too busy, too stressful, and too mentally demanding on me - but with this app I can train, switch off following simple instructions, and see results. Dev / Owner is super responsive to requests too. Overall a brilliant app for building strength and muscle.

I used this app for around 7 months. I used the paid version for most of that time, I liked the additional exercises and the plate calculator. I stopped using the app when I moved on to an intermediate program. I’m back on it again to build up after lockdown , but I’m only using the free as I can do the plate maths in my head and I don’t need accessory exercises. You make good progress with this plan and it’s easy to follow, you just need to get to the rack 3 times per week.

First off great app, always has been. Some issues I want to bring up are that my days often have a 2 day gap and I can’t change them in advance, I need to do the most recent workout first before I can change them. Second of all my deadlift only goes up in 2.5, and again I can only change it until it’s the most recent workout

This is an app I have come back to time and again over the past few years. It provides a tried and tested, easy to follow program which I have found to provide great results, particularly as a novice strength trainer or are returning to strength training following a break or, as in my case, an injury. I have always found this app easy to navigate and the program easy to follow. I would certainly recommend this app to someone looking to start strength training. The only downside that I have found, is that after improving up to a certain point, it is possible to fall into a cycle of reaching a certain weight, failing to complete the required sets so dropping the weight back down, only to fail again on the way up. All in all an excellent program, although it may have its limitations as you become a more advanced trainer.

The app itself is quite good - very simple, no frills, and this is probably a good thing. However! I have been paying user of the app since 2015, when there wasn’t a subscription model, only a one-off “power pack” upgrade, which I bought. Since returning to the app this year, the app CONSTANTLY nags me with pop ups and ads inside the workout screens to pay a monthly subscription. This “offer” should not invade my screen after I’ve turned it down the first time. It’s obvious where to upgrade if I want to. Thumbs down for abusing the goodwill of your long time paying users.

Now getting nagged to pay another “lifetime fee” every set. Good app ruined by greed. Suggest you try “Strong” which is almost as good and nowhere near as greedy.

You can’t add extra workouts. Try to add a C workout, change the exercises to what you want, great. Then go back in and it resets that workout to the default exercises. It also then adds two C workouts. I spent over an hour trying to get it to work, it doesn’t work.

It’s a decent little app which is clean and great for beginners to learn the basics at the gym. I’ve been using since 2016 and paid for the power pack in 2017. My issue is the fact the app hasn’t really evolved and features that has been added require very expensive pricing and additional pricing. This is despite the fact I’ve already paid for it - feels like a punch in the face to be honest. I paid to support the app like I would with a free PlayStation or PC game, I don’t expect to continue paying for each little new feature! My advice, use it for free and don’t bother paying for the extras. I’ll be deleting and using a different app where I can edit my workouts.

Let me start by saying if you are unsure on whether or not to get this app, get it. It is so easy to use, rigorous and gives a near complete training program for both beginners and intermediates. The program is designed to stick to compound lifts are target major muscle groups. The subscription is fully worth purchasing, and gives a simple guide to how to warm up and the ability to add on additional isolation exercises at the end. Additionally if you do not have time for 5x5 or it becomes too taxing, you have the option to switch to 3x5. My only complaint is that you cannot edit the core exercises for each workout. Now there is a good reason for this, as it ensures that you stick to the system (which I recommend) for the best results. However, individuals who suffer from conditions prohibiting them from certain lifts (such as supraspinatus tendinitis, which produces pain with barbell press), are unable to replace these exercises with a suitable alternative (such as standing/seated dumbbell press in the above case). Whilst the muscles targeted may not be identical, I personally believe that this app should give the freedom to allow edits. That’s just a thought, and I do hope one day such an option will be offered to subscribed users.
Helped me a huge amount with lifting

I have had a few periods on and off with lifting, trying to get into it and make progress, but I always suffered from a lack of direction, idea of what weights to lift, and generally had a lack of progress. However, after only using this app for 8 weeks, I have made huge progress and increased all my lifts by 50%. In 8 weeks I have gone from having not used the gym for months, to probably being in the best shape of my life, and being motivated to go to the gym 3-4 times a week because I see good progress each time. The app is fantastic, easy to use and you can use their website to find detailed description of form etc. Would 100% recommend this app.

I downloaded this app based on the overwhelming positive feedback on here, I wanted to try something different to encourage my muscles to grow...I’m one of those pesky hard gainers, so after not seeing as much improvement as I’d like I went searching for a new plan. I’ve been doing this 3 days a week for several weeks now. I’m squatting way more weight than before, but because of the low rep ranges it never feels like a challenge. I never feel like I’ve had a serious workout and I’ve actually been losing muscle since I started doing this. Having said that, the app is very easy to use, the graphs are great for tracking your progress. Just obviously wasn’t for me, I still class myself as a beginner, but this is really basic with no muscle gains in sight, so maybe better for your first plan, not one to switch to if you’ve already been doing something else as you’ll find yourself going backwards.

I was a bit dubious about the app after trying so many, however to my surprise both me & my girlfriend are really enjoying the simplicity, constant change between the two workouts and most of all the results 😁 The graphs tracking your increases are really motivating especially looking back monthly & thinking “Wow, I’ve actually got stronger really quickly” Also, since the workouts don’t take forever, we’ve been able to add in cardio or isolation on alternative days as a supplement for a quick 10-15 mins which make each workout feel different whilst keeping the foundation exercises - Love it! 💪🏽

I have been training with weights for over 30 years, for the last couple of years this has been my favourite app. It’s also a great go to training app for those who don’t want to waste any time in the gym. Weight training isn’t my only or main sport I just use it to stay strong, in shape and help with my other activities. If it’s your only thing then you probably want something more comprehensive. But for me it’s perfect.

Great app for the gym, an I've been using it for a while now. It would be nice if there was a screen where you could see your current personal bests for each of each exercise! Unfortunately this is almost unusable for me now, the phone app constantly freezes so I literally can’t do anything in the app. If I use the watch app, this works fine until I either finish the workout, because it wants the app open on the phone, which freezes so it doesn’t sync. Or, on the rare occasion that the phone app works, it resets the workout on the watch. Infuriating! Please fix this, as this was always my go to workout app.

I started using the app and following the programme about 6 weeks ago and I can already see and feel the effect. I can focus on simple exercises and challenge myself a little bit more every time I train. I’m the kind of skinny guy who has tried for years to gain some mass and this programme (along with changes in my diet) have showed me that consistency and discipline is key. I’ve paid for pro membership now so I’m really looking forward to the updates and new developments. For now, I can totally recommend it.

This app is great! I love the simplicity of it, I think it reflects the training plan perfectly. I like that I don’t have to calculate how much weight I need to add to progress it’s done automatically! Just roll up to the gym and train without having to fiddle about going through multiple menus to change sets and reps. The only grip I have is when you’ve done your set and tapped in you’re reps a rest timer pops up at the bottom which is handy but is hard to close when you’re rest time is up which leaves you tapping the phone like a madman, haha. Other than that this app is flawless! 👌

Brilliant app helps you track your progress love it gone from squatting around 35kg nearly squatting 60 kg in about 3 weeks brilliant for strength my advice work your way up gradually works better that way I also stop doing this for about a year tried other workouts and got nowhere I’ve just started back and in the process of purchasing a squat rack so I’m only doing the bench press and deadlift and row but you can’t get to your full potential unless you squat no other exercise comes close for gains
Solid App for developing Strength

This is an app I have come back to time and again over the past few years. It provides a tried and tested, easy to follow program which I have found to provide great results, particularly as a novice strength trainer or are returning to strength training following a break or, as in my case, an injury. I have always found this app easy to navigate and the program easy to follow. I would certainly recommend this app to someone looking to start strength training. The only downside that I have found, is that after improving up to a certain point, it is possible to fall into a cycle of reaching a certain weight, failing to complete the required sets so dropping the weight back down, only to fail again on the way up. All in all an excellent program, although it may have its limitations as you become a more advanced trainer.

Would have marked this down as I do not like to be asked to review apps however so far I can’t really fault it. It’s clear, video instructions are clear, I only need one piece of gym equipment so can monopolise that without having to try to get to the next bit of equipment when gym is busy, has a countdown timer that keeps going and banners when it’s time to do next set even when you’re in other apps. It will take time to see what the results are but so far it’s all good.

Big fan of StrongLifts. The app is super easy to use, and offers a really easy to follow workout plan focusing on compound lifts. The app offers good, readily accessible data feedback in terms of workout history, and is presented really well. Added bonus, not too much is hidden behind a paywall so get the sense the owners care about improving people’s training, not just making a quick buck. Certainly this is one of the better fitness apps out there.

I’ve been using 5x5 on and off since early 2018 and have had great results (squat increased from 70kg to 175kg in about 18months) this app is constantly improving. This current edition tho seems to have a couple of minor bugs. Some of the weights calculations (mainly on the supplementary movements) seem a little erratic. Like dips are suggesting I add 100+ kg even tho my top recorded weight is around the 10kg mark. Definitely worth the money especially if you’re a newbie

I’ve been training ~15 years in all types of ways. There are many effective ways of getting in shape, being stronger, being faster etc but the simplest way is 5x5. This is my foundation to all my training, and should serve as a foundation to all whether you’re a beginner or seasoned pro. Pay for the app too, show support, unlock the features and don’t waste your time on complexity. Strong is happy - enjoy

I used this app for around 7 months. I used the paid version for most of that time, I liked the additional exercises and the plate calculator. I stopped using the app when I moved on to an intermediate program. I’m back on it again to build up after lockdown , but I’m only using the free as I can do the plate maths in my head and I don’t need accessory exercises. You make good progress with this plan and it’s easy to follow, you just need to get to the rack 3 times per week.
Unable to install - keeps crashing

I was really looking forward to downloading this given the reviews, but couldn’t get past the registration screen before the app crashed. Tried deleting and re-installing at least 10 times, updating iOS, turning the phone off and on to no avail. I hope the developers can fix this… Developer responded within 1 day - app working superbly. Looks amazing.

So bloody obvious and easy to use. How many times before getting this app was I unsure of how many sets I had done and what rest I had taken or forgot to enter last weeks weight increase . The simplest things are often the best. Brilliant results as you would expect if you religiously followed any program. But we don’t because they are to annoyingly complicated and involve so many weight changes mid session.

First off great app, always has been. Some issues I want to bring up are that my days often have a 2 day gap and I can’t change them in advance, I need to do the most recent workout first before I can change them. Second of all my deadlift only goes up in 2.5, and again I can only change it until it’s the most recent workout
Good for motivation

I have taken up weight training in my 60’s to maintain health and strength - I find the StrongLifts app very motivating including when I missed a couple of weeks due to mild illness when the app automatically de-loaded to help me get back into it. I find the web pages very helpful for developing good “form”. Recommended for anyone my age taking up resistance training - try it, you won’t regret it!

It's been a long time since I logged into StrongLifts but started back tonight and I have to admit that I'm very impressed with how the app has improved (I updated prior to using it again)! Very slick user interface, literally fool-proof! I'm currently nursing a low back injury so it's ideal for my needs right now using vey light weights but able to be motivated to train and progress incrementally each session!

Good app and I’m happy to support SL5x5 but its not really possible to adapt this to other routines like greyskull, SS, or really anything else. That said it does work excellently for SL5x5, just you may have to buy a more flexible app in a year or so once you want to change program. To get the most out of it you should take the time to input your exact equipment. Worth the price just for the plate calculator though, and to support them as they're giving away a really good workout.

There’s not much else to say. Even after going through a plethora of other fitness apps, StrongLifts is the only one that does the job I need...despite not exactly being amongst the most aesthetic apps around. Only reason I won’t give it 5 stars is because of the lack of Apple Watch support. I’ve been waiting for this feature for a long time, and still it hasn’t arrived, which is disappointing.

At first this was 5 stars. Made some good progress and loved the app. The last few weeks however my progress has been disappearing regularly and I have lost 14 months worth of stats. I suspect this has to do with the new pro coming out, and so they don’t care about the power pack purchasers like me and so they let it glitch out. I now have to take pencil and pad to the gym with me and I end up using the app as a timer and set tick off. You can’t rely on it for any more than that sadly. Great start guys, poor finish. Unlikely to go ‘pro’ based on my last few weeks experience. Jon
Great structure for workouts

I bought a home gym setup last year and been using this app to help make sure I follow a structured workout. It’s great for tracking the weight you’re lifting (and making sure you increase it), counting sets and making sure you’re resting for the right amount of time between sets. Also if you miss a few workouts it will warn you and ask you if you want to reduce the weight.
Worst app on my phone

I have the latest iPhone X and this app performs terribly on it. There are delays of several seconds between touching a button and it reacting. This has the unfortunate effect of making you think nothing has happened , so you press it again and it registers two presses. So the wrong number of reps is recorded . Also, I tried to leave this review from the rating screen inside the app and it didn’t show up in the store so they are clearly filtering their one star reviews . The program itself has worked well for me but the app is the most frustrating one on my phone.

I love this app, I’m used to working out what % my warm up sets should be, when to deload etc. But this does it all for me, yes I paid for the upgrade, but it’s a one off payment and I thought it was worth it. If you don’t upgrade, the free version is still fab and does everything you need for your training sessions. And the timer...well, little things.

Nice and easy to use app, straight forward tracking of progress and takes you back a few steps after continued failed sets. Wish I had started out training with a routine like this years ago, instead of body building style routines. Not just for beginners though.

After hearing about the 5x5 program I immediately wanted to try it but found it difficult keeping track of my progress! This app has basically taken care of all that and has helped motivate me to continue progressing session by session!

No problem, so long as you’re willing and able to invest hundreds, not thousands, of dollars in your own equipment—I did.

So I’ve got the free version of the app. It’s simplicity is it’s trump card. And, much like what Mehdi preaches, it’s not Bro Science, so if you miss a rep there’s not a whole load of crap about useless supplementary exercises/ taking powder etc.. You failed? So what! Come back and do it again. As it should be. All I’ll say is, if it’s this good free, God help us with how good the paid version is.

For years you’ve been saying there will be an Apple Watch app. When will this be? You have released multiple updates and the last even has dark mode, yet no sign of the watch app. I am fed up of waiting and paying a subscription to a different app developer because they have a watch app - even though your app is superior I still won’t use it at the gym without the watch app

I love how quick and straight forward the workouts are; very versatile for those that may have less time. My only issue is that you can’t put more than one workout on the same day but you can still complete workouts for other days. For example, I decided to do two workouts today as I had time and felt I could do it. Once completed, rather than put both my workouts today, it put the second workout on Thursday because that’s when I was ‘meant to do it’. Can you allow for more than more that one workout to be done on the same day but ‘advise’ that they’re not rather than restricting it?

After 2 years of using stronglifts 5x5 on and off I can see why 5x5 is so popular, it’s simple and it works**. As volume increases I recommend a deload every 2 months where you drop all your new level of weight in half and start again with the progressive overload. Free** Easy to use** 5/5

Very straightforward and great to get the form correct without breaking the energy and rep bank. Found the first level better to go for 5 days straight with the increments as directed, will carry on in 2nd week with 2 consecutive days Wednesday rest day then 3rd week Monday/Wednesday/Friday until at maximum ability. Great app and very easy to follow

have used this app from 2018 and the workout A/B split was a great program for a beginner. packed on quite a bit of muscle. the new updates are even better allowing you to customize multiple workouts for a 4/5/6 day split with an extensive list of exercises.

Been lifting for a while no real guidance and found out about the app through a fb weightlifting group. Oh my god this app is sooooo good. Will start you off a fair bit lighter than you’re used to but it soon builds back up and beyond to what your original PB. SERIOUSLY CANNOT recommend this app enough, wether your a beginner or Ben lifting a while this app will help.

It’s soooo easy too use and honestly makes me focus more on what I’m doing I’ve suffered with adhd and I sometimes go off and do other things and not know what I’m doing and rest too long this app you let it know once the set is done and has a timer on it! Really handy and great app.
Tried to charge me

I recently tried to re-download this app as I’d lost it. It was free when I downloaded it the first time, however when I tried to re download it, iTunes tried to charge me £7.99. I tried this several times as I was shocked that it was now a chargeable app and they tried to charge me several times too. Luckily my bank put a block on it so no payment was taken. Don’t get me wrong it is a great app when in the gym and for fitness but not worth £7.99. Disappointed i can’t re download this, I’ve downloaded JFit now which is free as it states.

This is a great program & easy to use app. I’d fallen out of love with strength training but this was nice & easy to follow and the workouts at the beginning were quick & easy. It gets harder before you know it, but by that time you’ve got a good habit going & start to see the gains.

I stumbled onto this after searching for an article to help give me some guidance on proving my gym sessions. The interface and direction of the app is fantastic and easy to follow and for me personally is a great way to ensure I’m progressing with my lifts instead of stalling, I would recommend it to anyone who is struggling to push that little bit further.
Buggy after the updates

This a great app, it’s got a nice simple UI and makes the lifting experience really simple, all you need to do is lift. Since the change in model though it’s become quite buggy, it often does not start at all or crashes on start up. I think this is down to excessive reliance on network calls because it works better at home than in the gym (who know a gym with a good network?).

After a few months off recovering from a chest infection this app got me back up on top again. Really good as it works out all the weights and the extra workouts are a must for anyone wanting those get those 10 pull ups.

I started using 5x5 when I moved to a new gym where the plans they provided and the expertise available wasn't up to what I had at my previous gym, which was run by two competitive lifters. This app has filled that void. Not only is the app very simple and easy to use, but it is accompanied by in depth emails containing questions and answers from Mehdi - the expert behind it all. It's worked well for me because it's progressional and automated. You simply turn up and it informs you of the set, reps and weights. Even the free version is good enough. For absolute beginners I would recommend the pro update for the added extras.

I’ve been following the 5x5 programme for a little over ten years and this app is by far the greatest thing that happened to Mehdi’s program. No more writing things down in jotters or tracking timers with stop watches. This really is the simplest and best.

Great app just one improvement on the body weight thing because every time I looked at my workout it said my body weight was 70 kg when it’s not also how do you remove certain exercises your not allowed to do

It’s a decent little app which is clean and great for beginners to learn the basics at the gym. I’ve been using since 2016 and paid for the power pack in 2017. My issue is the fact the app hasn’t really evolved and features that has been added require very expensive pricing and additional pricing. This is despite the fact I’ve already paid for it - feels like a punch in the face to be honest. I paid to support the app like I would with a free PlayStation or PC game, I don’t expect to continue paying for each little new feature! My advice, use it for free and don’t bother paying for the extras. I’ll be deleting and using a different app where I can edit my workouts.
